International Telecommunications Union's Girls in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Day observed across the world

international-girls-in-ict-day.jpgKingston, Jamaica: Today girls and young women from 15 schools will gather to compete in a Caribbean Hackathon in observance of International Telecommunications Union's (ITU) Girls in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Day.

On Thursday, April 27, 2017, the Spanish Court Hotel's Worthington Conference Centre will be filled with students from Wolmer's Girls', Hillel Academy, St Andrew High School, St Elizabeth Technical High School, Campion College, Manchester High School, Immaculate Conception High School, American International School Kingston, Hampton School, Excelsior Community College, University of the West Indies, Moneague Community College, Caribbean Institute for Media and Communication, University of Technology Jamaica, and Northern Caribbean University, vying for prizes at the Jamaican leg of the Caribbean Hackathon.

The girls and young women will be engaged in hands-on activities, guided by a tech mentor, using ICT to create, innovate and generate solutions to various challenges. The activities include mobile app building, animation, robotics, digital video production and digital art works, and web development.

A day-long immersion in ICT, the 'hackathon' will give the girls and young women, an opportunity to envision themselves, not only as users of technology, but creators.

The 'hackathon', led by a group of women consultants through a joint partnership between Cotton Tree Consulting and Change Makers Development Ltd, will take place simultaneously, in Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.

"Scotiabank is pleased to be part of an initiative that will inspire and excite our girls through their engagement with technology. This unique opportunity is one we are sure will not only encourage interest but ultimately galvanise the talent of Jamaican women in the development of the ICT industry," said Yanique Forbes Patrick, vice-president of marketing at Scotiabank, regional platinum sponsor of the hackathon.

The event is also supported regionally by Gold Sponsor LOOP in partnership with the University of the West Indies.

Let's Talk Tech

A number of local, regional and international role model tech speakers will also be streamed, giving inspirational messages of support to the participants as over 40 messages can viewed over the ITU portal URL:

Messages will come from Trinidad-born Aaerospace engineer Camille Wardrop Alleyne, who currently serves as an assistant programme scientist for the International Space Station, based at National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Centre in Houston in Texas. Assistant Professor of Technology and Operations Management at Bason College, Jennifer Bailey, whose speciality is identifying effective strategies for generating innovation breakthroughs, while mitigating innovation risks will also have a message.

The extended line-up includes Lloyd Carney, CEO of Brocade Communications Systems, Inc (USA); Leila Janah, founder of Samasource (USA); Dr. Zorica Pantic, President of Wentworth Institute of Technology, (USA); Wambui Kinya, chief strategy officer of Andela (Kenya); Dr. Cardinal Warde, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Interim Executive Director, Caribbean Science Foundation; Dr. Gunjan Mansingh, Business Intelligence Lecturer at the University of the West Indies (Jamaica); and Tricia Clarke Stone, co-founder and CEO of Narrative (USA).

Nadeen Matthews, National Commercial Bank (NCB) chief digital and marketing officer and CEO of the NCB Foundation expressed that the hackathon is part of an important global movement to increase female representation in ICT.

"Digitisation is a global shift and our ability to effectively compete as a nation and as a corporate entity requires that we generate a talent pool with the requisite skill set to meet the growing demands. It is exciting to see so many Jamaican companies collaborating to make this a reality in Jamaica. NCB, as local platinum sponsor, is delighted to be part of this movement," Matthews concluded.

The Hackathon is sponsored locally by Phase 3 Productions, and supported by the Inter-American Development Bank.

Simple Facts about Girls in ICT Day Worldwide

Over the last six years, over 240,000 girls and young women have taken part across 160 countries. Since the start of the initiative, the ITU Girls In ICT Twitter account has reached over half a billion people with the hashtag #GirlsinICT. In 2016, the hashtag reached 68.4 million, with over 237 million deliveries, representing the potential number of times that people saw a GirlsinICT tweet.

The Living legend, who rose to fame as a backing vocalist for Bob Marley and member of the I-Threes, and after a successful solo career, will perform in Toronto at the infamous Opera House. Included in her early evening performance will be hit singles "Many Are Called," "Black Woman" and "Sister's Chant."

Ms. Mowatt's performance is a rare and an exclusive engagement, and supportive to Colin and his musical mission via Unleashed. "When Colin called and asked me to perform for his album launch, I said yes right away. He always makes positive music, and I gladly lend my voice to that movement. See you soon Montreal and Toronto!"

After taking 2 years off from making music, Colin Levy is ready to take center stage. Backed by the Hardcore band, Colin will perform the lead single from his album, "Smile" which was produced by Willie Lindo and Dean Fraser. Serviced to radio DJs around the world, it has become one of the most requested songs by fans. In addition to "Smile," fans in both cities will hear music produced by Stephen Marley ("Forever Praising Jah"), Willie Lindo ("Life") and Dean Fraser ""One Chance").

The 17 track disc features guest appearances by Marcia Griffiths ("One Chance"), Lady Saw ("Do It Again"), Heather Cummings ("Lover's Converse"), Anthony B ("West Best"), Lutan Fyah ("Bad Habit"), Turbulence and G. Forest ("Good Newz"). When asked about the recording with such greats, Colin shared "the vibrations we felt when making these songs together helped take the music to another level. We didn't just make music, we made an imprint that people can take with them to feel good - day or night" and fans agree! Feedback by way of comments on the artists social media pages suggest that not only do they like the lead single "Smile," they placed their pre-orders for the album feeling instinctively it has music they want to hear.

Witty Birthday Party - Feb 19th, 2012 | Photos by: Milton Raynor

International Superstar Celine Dion ignited the crowd at the Greenfield Stadium in Trelawny for her performance at the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival.

The audience was mesmerized by the golden voice songstress as she delivered hits from her extensive catalogue.  There was loud applause as Dion took to the stage and spoke to her eager audience- 'Hello, Jamaica! It took me a few years to get here, but I will make up for lost time".

Dion had several outfit changes during her one hour and 45 minutes set and serenaded the crowd with hits such as 'Beauty and the Beast', 'It's All Coming Back to Me" and her 1990 hit 'Where does my heart beat now".

Celine was also joined on stage during her set by Diana King. Earlier in the night, patrons recived electrifying performances from siblings Tami Chynn and Tessanne Chynn, Jully Black, Bryan Art and Richie Stephens and Gentleman.

Critics of the festival hailed Celine Dion as one of the best Jazz and Blues performers to date, while others expressed disappointment at her song choices.

Reggae superstars, Shaggy and Richie Stephens were honored following strong performances of their own. After performing several of his classics alongside fellow artistes, Rayvon and Rik Rok, Shaggy received an award  honoring his contribution for promoting Jamaican culture worldwide. Meanwhile, Stephens, who performed Live Your Life alongside German Reggae star, Gentleman, copped an award celebrating his nearly two decades of contributions towards Jamaican music.

JR Gong closes Jazz and Blues on a superb note

Damian 'Jr Gong' Marley gave a superb performance on the final night of the three day Jazz and Blues event. Marley closed the event with a scorching set when he took to the stage on sunday morning.

Jr Gong was accompanied by a back up singer and a flag man and delivered hits from his catalogue as well as his father's catalogue.

Marley shared the stage with saxophonist Dean Frazer and international artiste Bobby Brown. Marley and Brown performed their hit single 'Beautiful' and had the audience singing along to the words.  Jr Gong's mother, Cindy Breakspeare stood to the side of the stage and sang word for word during her son's performance.

Jr Gong also called on his brother Stephen Marley to perform four songs with him. Stephen then called on his son Joseph aka Jo Mersa who gave a good performance as the new Marley generation. Black Am I also joined Jo Mersa on stage and thrilled the audience with a commendable performance.

Artiste Cee Lo Green preceded Jr Gong on stage and gave a stellar performance. He belted out popular hits such as 'F You', 'Crazy' and 'Bigger City'.

Trinidadian artiste Destra Garcia also gave a high energy performance. The soca queen showed her vocal range when she covered songs from Whitney Houston's catalogue.

Heads of State also took fans on an hour long musical journey and serenaded several women at the front of the audience with red roses.

Overall the Jazz and Blues festival was a top notch event which delivered exceptional performances from the artistes.

Donation line for Shaggy & Friends now open

Persons wishing to donate to The Shaggy Make A Difference Foundation can now do so via text message, thanks to telecommunications firms Digicel and LIME. By sending a text message to Digicel 488-4175, anyone can donate $20 to the charity and for LIME text the number 444-4248 for a donation of $50 per sms, both will benefit the Bustamante Hospital for Children. The Shaggy Make a Difference Foundation are the producers of the annual Shaggy & Friends benefit concert, which also raises well-needed money for the Bustamante Hospital -- the only Children's hospital in the English-speaking Caribbean. Reggae superstar Shaggy, who is also the executive director of the foundation, said that the donation line helps people to be heroes in their own way. "Not every superhero wears a cape you know. People can donate to a fantastic cause and help save the lives of the countless children that need services at the Bustamante Children's Hosptial," he said. The diamond-selling artiste is reminding the public that all the proceeds from the donation line and the Shaggy & Friends Benefit Concert go directly to address the glaring needs of the Bustamante Children's Hospital. "Anyone with a phone on any network can just simply send a text to 488-4175 for Digicel donations of $20 and 444-4248 for LIME donations of $50 and help us continue the work that we have started. This year, our focus is on the cardiac unit of the hospital which is where needs the most help," Shaggy said. Now in its third year, the Shaggy & Friends benefit concert will see the likes of Shaggy, Lauryn Hill, Eve, Half-Pint, Coco Tea, Maxi Priest, I-Octane, Gyptian, Mr Vegas, Wayne Marshall, Tami Chynn, Deniece Williams, Assassin and Romain Virgo. Set for Saturday January 7, the concert will be held on the grounds of Jamaica House.

Jamaica's Golden Jubilee gets jazzed up

Music is one of the strongest elements of Jamaican culture, and in recognition of this, the JAMAICA Jazz and Blues Festival - The Art of Music 2012 edition will feature a sterling tribute to the dynamic, energetic and riveting genres that have made up Jamaican popular music. Art of Music Productions (AMP), the producers of the Festival, have dedicated Thursday night, January 26, 2012 to Jamaica 50, when they will present an exciting journey through Jamaican music. The production company has co-opted a slew of Jamaica's best artistes to make an excellent event that will kickstart the celebration of the important anniversary. "Jazz is the first major event for Jamaica 50 and will therefore set the tone for the celebrations," explained Junior Taylor, Associate Producer with Art of Music Productions. "The idea is to showcase the music from the time we gained our independence to now," he said. Thursday night's tribute to the golden jubilee will therefore present a musical tapestry featuring some of Jamaican music's greatest from the different eras, showcasing the best of Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae and Dancehall. The impressive roster is a diverse mix that will surely sate the wishes of fans of all Jamaican genres. The multiple-platinum recording artiste and international sensation Shaggy, is sure to whet appetites with his magnetism, gravelly voice, and catchy witty tunes that will send waves of excitement through the audience. Dancehall's first king, Yellowman as well as the original raggamuffin, Half Pint, will have original dancehall fans rocking to the beat. Reggae's first empress Marcia Griffiths and the young lioness Etana, the poetic philosopher Luciano and Mykal Rose will delve into Reggae's more mystical and prophetic side. For those who wish to immerse themselves in the sounds of lovers rock, the timeless Freddie McGregor and the inimitable John Holt are guaranteed to please. The line-up will also feature George Nooks, Chris Martin, AJ Brown, Pluto Shervington, Lloyd Parks and the We the People Band and the Dragonaires. The extensive, solid line-up will deliver short, energetic performances that will create a visual kaleidoscope of Jamaican music, drawing from their own hits as well as other iconic songs. Additionally, the night's musical fare will be held together by a narrative that will guide the musical journey. Mr. Taylor explained that the JAMAICA Jazz and Blues' Thursday night leg has traditionally enjoyed the lowest turn-out of the three-night Festival. He noted that the lower attendance results from fewer people being able to take off from work to attend, on Thursday. It is however anticipated that this year's special line-up and other incentives will have more patrons flocking to the venue. Indeed, as though the fabulous line-up wasn't enough, Art of Music Productions is sweetening the incentives by lowering the ticket price for general admission. So, in tribute to Jamaica 50, general admission tickets for Thursday night will be only US$50.00. VIP tickets are priced at US$120. The JAMAICA Jazz and Blues Festival - The Art of Music 2012 is a historic 16th staging and will also feature international artistes Celine Dion, Cee-Lo Green, the Temptations, Richie Stephens, Gentleman, Jully Black, Nicole Henry, Tami and Tessanne Chin and Destra Garcia. The Festival takes place at the Greenfield Stadium, Trelawny, January 26 - 28, 2011.

Show promoter GT Taylor has remained upbeat about this year's staging of the annual Jagra GT Taylor Christmas Extravaganza. The Christmas Day event comes four days before the country goes to the poll to elect a new government and some are predicting that this will surely put a damper on the season's festivities. Although Taylor says he has some concerns, he emphasizes that the plusses outweigh the potential negatives. He is confident, for example, that all 40 acts will turn up to the Independence Park venue in Black River and deliver excellent performances. Taylor is almost bursting with enthusiasm about the high production quality of the show and the newly-introduced 'Party Zone'. He is happy with the unwavering commitment of the sponsors and, as a result, has been able to keep ticket prices 'reasonable'. "Currently we are looking into starting rehearsals and production manager Worrell King is expertly overseeing that aspect of the show," GT said. He added,"We are a bit excited about the Party Zone concept which will see us creating a dancefloor with a disco in the middle of the park. This will provide an option for those who prefer to chill out near a bar and just listen to music. Based on our observations over the years, we took a decision to experiment with this concept and depending on the response we will know whether or not to make a regular feature of Extravaganza." But is the promoter experiencing any nervousness with regard to the event being so close to Elections? "Initially, we were very concerned. We had been hoping for more breathing space, but we have accepted the things we cannot change and have moved full speed ahead with our plans. The bottom line is that it is Christmas and elections or no elections, people will want somewhere to go and enjoy themselves. Jagra GT Taylor Christmas Extravaganza will be that perfect place," the Dancehall Master declared. Security tight Taylor also emphasized that security will be tight and that there will be adequate and safe parking for all patrons.. He noted that the police in Black River, under the supervision of Superintendent Robinson, have given the assurance that patrons will be able to come out and enjoy the event without fear. In an interview, Superintendent Robinson stated: "This is an annual event, which is always very well organized. Mr Taylor has always complied with our suggestions and we have never had any negative report. This year, we expect the same professionalism that we are used to." The Supe added, "Our only little concern is the elections, but we think that this event will actually unite the people. The people this side are hungry for entertainment and they know how to have a good time. We anticipate that it will be another incident-free event, but at the same time we are well prepared for the unexpected." Asked if he personally will be present, Superintendent Robinson admitted that he doesn't usually attend functions on Christmas Day. However, he noted that this year "things could be a little different. You could very well see me there". Jagra GT Taylor Christmas Extravaganza takes place on December 25 at Independence Park, Black River, St Elizabeth. Among the artistes on the lineup are Bounty Killer, I-Octane, Coco Tea, John Holt, Romain Virgo, Khago, Hezron, Chuck Fenda, Twin of Twins, Wayne Marshall, Iley Dread, Lutan Fyah, Professor Nuts, Warrior King, Villa Dutch, Specialist and a host of others. Leading the charge for the females will be Spice, Macka Diamond, D'Angel and Toya. Sponsors of the event include Jagra, Irie FM, CVM, On Stage, Zip FM, Linkz FM, Downsound Records, Five Star Recording, Best of Jamaica TV, Spendless Night Club, Allen's Texaco, Lynch Auto Parts, Ward's Power Tools and Supplies, Bari Enterprise, Vision, Eezy Ice, Sealand Foods, Rum Cream, Red Label, Stone's Ginger Wine,, and Stampede Street Charts.

American Airlines Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- American Airlines and its parent company are filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, as they seek to cut costs and unload massive debt built up by years of high jet fuel prices and labor struggles. The nation's third-largest airline also said that CEO Gerard Arpey had stepped down and was replaced by company president Thomas W. Horton. AMR Corp. has continued to lose money while other U.S. airlines returned to profitability in the last two years. Horton said the board of directors unanimously decided to file for bankruptcy after meeting yesterday in New York and again by conference call on Monday night. American said it would operate normally while it reorganizes in bankruptcy. The airline said it would continue to operate flights, honor tickets and take reservations. It said the AAdvantage frequent-flier program would not be affected. Horton said, however, that as the company goes through a restructuring it will probably reduce the flight schedule "modestly," with corresponding cuts in jobs. The company will delay the spin-off of its regional airline operation, American Eagle, which was expected in early 2012. AMR Eagle Holding Corp. also filed for bankruptcy. American was the only major U.S. airline that didn't file for bankruptcy protection in the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks that triggered a deep slump in the airline industry. The last major airline to file for bankruptcy protection was Delta in 2005.

Feel good on Saturdays at the Purple Touch party

Even though it got off to a late start, last week's Purple Touch party has the makings of becoming the breakout party for the holiday season in the Corporate Area. At least 80 persons, some of whom were dressed in purple, showed up at Club Riddim a.k.a The Building for the event. One of the Eye Candy models turned heads with a sexy lingerie outfit which showed off her bountiful assets. There have been several requests, mostly from males, for her to return this week and the organisers have assured us that she will be making another x-rated appearance this Saturday. Selectors DJ Rinse from Cash Flow, Teacha and Mackerel, and Hotta Ball kept the vibes flowing while patrons got a nice buzz from the popular intoxicating Purple Touch drink specials that glowed in the dark. "Dem sweet and dem mek you waan party," one male said, after knocking back one glass of the purple concoction. The swag meter was turned up as artistes G Whizz, Tiana, Savage, Charly Black, Posh, Sidra, Formila One and Flirtagious were all present, posing for photographs and swilling expensive drinks. There was a special appearance by New York's radio/mc Black Barbie who flew in for the event as well. Come experience this week's mad Purple Touch vibes this Saturday. You don't want to miss it.

Missy Kitty Book Launch - Good girls gone bad

The year  2011 has been one in which recession has been the main profiler in the videolight and  the production of mammoth dancehall shows has declined significantly. However,  the promoters of the event  which has what is  arguably  the longest title  - Jagra  GT Taylor Christmas Extravaganza - have declared that recession or no recession, the show must go on.
Production is therefore  in high gear for this eagerly anticipated calendar event, held annually at Independence Park, Black River, St Elizabeth. Now celebrating its 12th staging, the show will continue with the theme that heralded its mega successful 10thanniversary, 'Caring and Sharing Through Music'.
The promoter is still savouring the success of last year's show, which pundits agree was the best show for the season, and which Taylor says was the best Christmas Extravaganza in the event's history. He had words of commendation for the sponsors, in particular title sponsor Jagra, the artistes, the band, the production team and, of course, the patrons.
GT has promised that there will be lots of Christmas cheer  for 'Extravaganza' patrons come December 25, 2011. Asked if he would be jumping into his Santa Claus suit which is gathering dust, his answer was a decisive "No". He did point out, however, that Old St Nick comes in many forms and the sponsors will be sure to have goodies to give away, while the artistes will deliver special entertainment  packages to their  fans.
As a matter of fact, the artiste line-up sports all the big - and not-so-big - names in reggae/dancehall  music. Among them are Mavado, Bounty Killer, I-Octane, Coco Tea, John Holt,  Spice, Romain Virgo, Hezron, Chuck Fenda, Twin of Twins, Macka Diamond, Wayne Marshall, Iley Dread, D'Angel, Lutan Fyah, Professor Nuts, Warrior King, Toya, Villa Dutch, Tiana, Specialist and a host of others.

The Miss Black Nude Beauty Pageant was founded in Washington, DC by Husband and Wife team, Ron and Deloris Dickerson.. Mostly Deloris, Ron helped out a little bit. The 1st show was held at Club 55 in the summer of 1993. It was an instant success. It has over the years become something of a cult classic with people coming to see the show from all over the world. Ok, back to the beginning.. The concept for the pageant was created as Ms. Deloris and Ron were watching a Miss America Pageant.  Already having been in the Gentlemen's Club business for well over 20 years, Ms. Deloris had a vision of emulating that show, but with a twist. She decided to create a production, very similar to that show but allowing the ladies to be a little more creative in their dance moves and closing the show with a giant BANG!! The last category of the pageant was going to be TOTALLY NUDE. How cool is that?

The 1st production of the show featured 15 young ladies of African American Decent showcasing their swimwear, Evening Gowns and Lingerie. The categories of Talent and Totally Nude rocked the overflow crowd out of its seats and a yearly show was born.

During the ensuing years, several high profile television shows featured The Miss Black Nude Beauty Pageant. The most popular of all was HBO. HBO actually filmed the show live in DC but also traveled with the show for many years to its other home, Hedonism II in Negril, Jamaica.. Just a side bar about Hedonism II, It's the best damn place on earth. Sorry, back to my story. The Miss Black Nude Beauty Pageant has been featured at Hedonism II in Negril Jamaica for the past 17 years, only missing one year. It's always hosted by our trusted DJ & MC, "Mr. E" who also is one of the producers of the show. It is a staple for the last week of September. Visitors from all over The United States, Europe and Canada make their way to Hedo II the last week of September, every year to witness first hand, this fabulous show. 2011 will be no different, so if you know like we know, be wicked for a week along with the ladies of  Club 2046  and join us for a most exciting week of fun and delicious activities.

All systems go for Houston's Swagg Jamz

It is gearing up to be Houston's worst kept secret - the monthly Swagg Jamz which will have its kick-off on Friday, September 9, 2011.
A project of Crossroad Production and Entertainment Group, Swagg Jamz, will take place the second Friday of each month at Club Riddims and will consist of great music, exciting theme nights, along with a live  performer some Fridays.
"It's all about having fun - getting your swagger on and jamming to the musical mix of experienced deejays, while feeling a heightened sense of belonging by being part of the chosen theme for that Friday. For the first Jamz on September 9, we will have DJ Vibes and in October we will have Red Rat as the live performer," a representative from Crossroads Production explained.
"Right now, we know that in music circles it's all about 'tunning up di swagga'," promoter Brown said with a smile, as he added that the idea came to him after he saw the enthusiasm with which Houston embraced the Swag dance.
"We had two shows recently - one in Houston and the other in Dallas, and while Kip Rich was on stage, a Caucasian woman was dancing and he called her on stage and taught her the Swag dance. The audience loved it. Then I started thinking that perhaps it would be a good idea to offer person some kind of monthly entertainment and fill a void that now exists," said Mr. Brown, who has been involved in the music business for over 15 years.
The only name that came to his mind for the monthly event was the Swagg Jamz. He pitched the idea to a couple of persons, they liked it and Brown decided to run with it.
Formerly a record producer, Brown is now involved in promotions and is known for his annual, well-produced reggae show,  with many of the genre's top artistes. He brings his skills to the Swagg Jamz, which, he says will cater to the 18-35 age group and will be a heavy reggae jam. The music, Brown pointed out will be 90 percent reggae/dancehall, while the other 10 percent will be a mixture of soca, hip hop, R&B and other genres.

The Miss Black Nude Pageant is unapologetically the most eye-popping pageant on the planet. This one-week extravaganza is a classy, jaw-dropping parade of the most sensationally beautiful black women alive and it takes place in Jamaica from September 25 to October 3, 2011. The venue is the hypnotically lush paradise resort of Hedonism 11 in Negril, located on the secluded end of the town's seven mile white sand beach. The Miss Black Nude Pageant is broadcast on the HBO Real Sex series and this year's staging will bring together twelve of the sexiest chocolate ladies from across the United States competing for cash prizes and the coveted crown. The event is one of the most requested and repeated shows on the HBO channel. The girls typically come from all walks of life. Some are college students, others are exotic dancers and a few from this year's bevy of beauties work in the private sector. They all are as supremely talented as they are irresistibly beautiful, but only one lucky lady can glide away with the crown. Pageant director Delores Dickson pointed out that this year is the eighteenth renewal of the pageant, and she said that over the years, the delegates have benefitted from the competition to educate themselves and finance their college education. She noted that a recent delegate graduated from Howard University as an ophthalmologist and another qualified as a medical doctor and is now enjoying a productive career in immunology in the Washington DC area. During this sizzling week, the twelve luscious ladies of color from multiple American cities will compete in several categories of competition: evening wear, swimsuit, talent showcase, a Burlesque routine and the all-important nude showcase. Hollywood, a celebrity choreographer from the Washington DC area will work with the girls to perfect their routines and a panel of judges will determine the eventual winner on the night of Saturday October 1. "We are very excited to be back in beautiful Jamaica with our first-class show", Dickson beamed. When Dickson is not doing the pageant or engaged in one of her other entertainment enterprises, she spends time raising funds for cancer research. She created the Miss Black Nude pageant after watching the Miss America pageant one night, and she wanted to do a similarly classy event for women of color, but with a daring twist. Over the years, the pageant has built a devout following of loyalists who travel to witness this thriller every year. "The Miss Black Nude pageant is my pied piper" Dicky Rockingham, a New York fan confessed. "Every year I go with my girlfriend and her friends, and to say the event is mesmerizing, magical and mouthwatering is to put it mildly. I think each year the girls are plucked from the Garden of Eden", he drooled. Hundreds of pageant fans are expected to converge on Negril during pageant week, and guests can participate in a number of activities including fashion shows, pajama parties, body painting, toga parties, wet t-shirt contest and nude volley ball playoffs. Or one can simply daydream under the soul-warming rays of the tropical sun. Hedonism 11 is an adult all-inclusive playground for pleasure that nourishes the body, the mind, the spirit and the soul. For over thirty years, this trend-setting resort has shattered inhibitions, pushed the limits of human endurance and brought untold joys and fulfillment to hedonists from all corners of the globe. And all the rumors, legends and myths you've heard about Hedonism are all true!

Great performances at Sumfest 2011

Johnny Gourzong and his team must take a bow, because this Sumfest high on entertainment value.
All the artistes performed well (except Kartel) and although R Kelly was missing, Friday night was still a great night. Beres, Coco Tea, Bunny Wailer, Tanya Stephens, Half Pint, Prophecy and others were in fine form and gave patrons their money's worth.
Jah B closed the show in fine style, despite the fact that many of the patrons had left the venue by then. But he put on a world class performance that turned Catherine Hall into a real dancehall.
We know the numbers weren't so right, but the vibes could not have been better. And when Beres call up Marion Hall, aka Lady Saw on stage for a collaboration, it was quite a show.
Dancehall Night was awesome and the outstanding performers were I-Octane, Assassin, Konshens and Beenie Man.
One word of caution though, has to do with the flares and the fire crackers. It needs to be banned before somebody gets hurt. During I-Octane's peroformance the fire looked like it was getting out of control; the artistes need to stop buying these things and then pretend that it's their fans who are doing it spontaneously.
Nicki Minaj did what was expected on Saturday night but she had stiff competition from the likes of Wayne Wonder who performed right after her. Wayne Wonder was truly awesome. After the crowd disappeared following Nicki's performance, Wayne started singing and by his third song, people were standing should-to-shoulder, hands in the air, shouting and singing as they showed approval for reggae's golden boy.
Chalice closed the show doing all their hits and included in their segment was a tribute to the late Cool Ruler, Gregory Isaacs by none other than Geore Nooks. Well done George!
Next year marks 20 continuous years of Reggae Sumfest. Already the anticipation is running high.

No R. Kelly for Sumfest

R. Kelly has been hospitalized after emergency throat surgery in Chicago, forcing him to give up performing for an unknown period while he recuperates, the singer's spokesman said Wednesday.

Kelly, 44, had complained of throat pain and was rushed on Tuesday to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where surgeons the same day drained an abscess on one of his tonsils, spokesman Allan Mayer said.

The Chicago native will be "laid up indefinitely" as he heals, therefore making it impossible for him to perform at Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay this weekend.

Kelly alluded to discomfort in his throat last week in a tweet, which was also posted on his official website, saying optimistically, "I feel like my throat is coming back. I've been in bed sweating like crazy."

Kelly won a Grammy in 1997 for his gospel-tinged "I Believe I Can Fly," and is also known for his musical melodrama "Trapped in the Closet," a multipart saga about an ever-expanding cast of characters.

The medical issue comes soon after reports that Kelly faces a $2.9 million foreclosure on his suburban Chicago mansion.

Kelly's spokesman has declined to discuss the home but has said the singer is not in financial trouble.

Good Times goes to Mobay

The long-running retro party Heineken Good Times, is scheduled to make its third appearance in the second city on Saturday April 2 at Pier One. According to Jerome Hamilton, executive member of The Quorum, Good Times will be held in that venue's interior to secure an intimate feel. This is the second Good Times event of the year, the first was held this month at the Chinese Benevolent Association in Kingston. It was first held in Montego Bay in 2000 at Pier One and returned four years later at The Brewery.

Hamilton said the decision to make it MoBay again stemmed from overwhelming fan demand. "We're looking to expand our base and Montego Bay is just one of the locations we will be playing. We will also be going to New York in April," Hamilton disclosed.

Heineken Good Times made its debut in the Big Apple last year at the Mingles Club in the Bronx and drew enthusiastic audience response, strong enough for promoters in the New York borough to request a follow-up.

Featuring a slew of reggae, dancehall and hip hop acts, Best of the Best is also advertising the Gaza Don, Vybz Kartel. But everyone knows that Kartel has no US work permit so he can't possibly travel to Florida.

However, the poster says that Kartel will be performing live via satellite from Jamaica. Let's see how this works out.

Kingston, JA: FOURTEEN of the most sought after reggae acts of the past decade, including current frontrunners Shaggy, Sean Paul, Damian Marley, Beenieman, Marcia Griffiths, Lady Saw, Bounty Killer and Wayne Wonder will do battle for the prestigious 'Artiste of the Decade' (2001-2010) award at the Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EME) Awards, set to take place on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at The East Lawn of the historical Devon House site, Hope Road in Kingston, Jamaica.

The very competitive category was established this year to honour the reggae artiste who had the biggest impact as a hit maker, performer and as a touring act, event founder and CEO Richard "Richie B" Burgess said.

Platinum artiste Shaggy stormed out to an early lead in the online voting ( Shaggy's biggest success came at the turn of the millennium with singles It Wasn't Me and Angel. The subsequent album Hotshot was not only certified diamond by the RIAA but soared to the top spot on the Billboard 200 and UK album chart. He scored again with Lucky Day which went Gold in 2002 and his 2008 album Intoxication, which earned a nominated for Best Reggae Album at the Grammy Awards
Beside his on stage accolades, Shaggy has championed many philanthropic initiatives including raising funds for the Bustamante Children's Home in Kingston. He also teamed with his peers on a tribute song titled Rise Again, which become the anthem in Haiti after the recent earthquake. In 2007, Shaggy's musical accomplishment was recognised by the Government of Jamaica when he was awarded the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander (CD).

Another frontrunner for the Artiste of the Decade award is Beenieman. He may not have the international record sales of Damian, Shaggy or Sean Paul, however, he has the streets locked and is arguably the most seasoned and accomplished entertainer in the industry. His album on Virgin Records, Art and Life was certified gold and won him the Grammy for Reggae Album of the Year in 2001. On stage the 'Doctor' has enjoyed many exceptional live performances including his memorable set at Reggae Sumfest 2008 in Montego Bay, Jamaica, that some say, firmly established him as the "King of the Dancehall". On the local charts, Beenieman has had an impressive catalogue of hits including his current chart banger Rum and Red Bull and he continues to have a major presence at all the major reggae festivals around the world.

Wayne Wonder, born Von Wayne Charles, recorded Bonafide Love (Movie Star) with Buju Banton, and wrote several early hits for the cultural DJ early in his career. In 2000, Wonder launched his own record label, Singso, and collaborated with international artistes, Foxy Brown, and Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes. His career achieved internationally success in 2003 with his Atlantic Records single No Letting Go. The single reached #11 in the US and #3 in the UK and was a major success on urban radio stations in the US.

Jr Gong Marley created mayhem in 2006 with his monster hit Welcome to Jamrock. The song sat atop charts in Jamaica, Europe, and Canada and created just as much fever state side, enjoying multiple spins on urban radio stations and cable channels like BET, MTV and VH1 TV. When the album was released in September 2005, it shot to #7 on the sales charts, making it the biggest opening for a reggae artiste in history. Two days after the 61st anniversary of his father's birth, Gong claimed another first when he became the first Jamaican artiste to win two Grammy awards at the same show -- the Best Reggae Album and Best Urban/Alternative Performance in the R&B category.

Sean Paul, who enjoyed unprecedented album sales with his debut album, Stage One in 2000, has had a string of successes including his song Gimme the Light that was a huge hit, and the multi-platinum album, Dutty Rock (2002), which earned him a Grammy award. Paul followed up with The Trinity in 2005, which also went platinum and won the American Music Award for Favourite Pop/Rock Male Artiste in 2006.

One only has to hear the punch line from monster tracks like -- She Loves Me Now, Step Aside, Tempted To Touch, Rockaway, Double Trouble, Putting Up Resistance or One Step Ahead to know that the "boss," Beres Hammond is in the house. On stage, whether it is at home in Jamaica or major markets like New York, Florida or London, Beres is in a class by himself.

The name Marcia Griffiths has always been associated with excellence. Dubbed the Queen of reggae music, Marcia has in the past decade, established herself as an Ambassador of Jamaican music. An original member of Bob Marley's legendary harmony singers, Marcia is credited with recording a number of big hits songs including Dreamland, I Shall Sing and the perennial favourite Electric Boogie.
For the past 10 years, Grammy-nominated Bounty Killer has made a career of bussing young artistes such as Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Elephant Man and several members of his Alliance crew. He is a fearless performer who has waged numerous on-stage battles with his arch nemesis Beenieman. On the international scene, Bounty made his biggest mark in 2001 with a successful collaboration with No Doubt on the single Hey Baby. He also enjoy solo successes with albums such as Ghetto Dictionary Volume I: Art of War and Ghetto Dictionary Volume II: Mystery, the latter receiving a Grammy nomination.

Dancehall Queen Lady Saw is an accomplished international star who has the distinction of being

the first female deejay to win a Grammy Award. Her international exploits also includes a gold certification for the single Smile with Vitamin C, a triple-platinum certification for Underneath It All for

her 2003 collaboration with No Doubt. She has also earned a well-deserved Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Duo or Group for her featured performance on No Doubt's single

Underneath It All, which reached number #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Other nominees for the Artiste of the Decade category includes Capleton, Elephant Man, Sizzla, Luciano and Buju Banton.

This year's staging of Rebel Salute will see David Brooks putting in an appearance and fans of Mavado won't be hearing any of the negative songs associated with that name.
It will be straight clean entertainment for the Rebel Salutes loyals.
David Brooks will be taking to the stage at the Port Kaiser Sports Complex in St Elizabeth on January 15 for the 18th staging of the event.
Speaking at the launch of the festival in Kingston last Thursday, Tony Rebel noted that many have questioned the inclusion of the popular deejay, known for his 'gangster for life' persona, on the festival known for its positive messages.
"Over the years we have been fearless explorers of the music business and this is just one way we are exploring the music of this artiste who does have good material. David Brooks does have a good side, and that's the side we want to encourage," he explained.

Tony Rebel added that there are other artistes including deejays Buju and Capleton who made a change for the better musically and have been embraced, therefore it is possible that the same could be said of David Brooks in the future.

This year's festival will also see two other top reggae artistes appearing on the Rebel Salute Stage for the first time. Tony Rebel announced that Reggae veteran and Grammy Award winner Toots Hibbert is billed for the festival, as well as singer and songwriter Tanya Stephens. The line-up has further been diversified by the inclusion of the Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars.
The eclectic line-up includes a mix of established, current and up-and-coming acts. The roster includes Beres Hammond, who returns after a seven-year absence, Tarrus Riley, Queen Ifrica, I-Octane, Ken Boothe, Khago, Chuck Fenda, Fantan Mojah, Nadine Sutherland, Dennis Alcapone, Jack Radics, AJ Brown and Tristan Palmer.

Beres Hammond will be hosting a New Year's Eve party concert, entitled 'A Private Moment with Beres - the Black ... White ... Gold edition,' at the Caymanas Golf Club.
The man long considered by many as a super reggae ambassador, is preparing to give his patrons an electrifying performance as they close out 2010 together.
His fans will have one full hour of Beres. While he does a medley of his hit songs, he is also expected to introduce a few new ones, including his latest lovers rock single More Time. He is set to grace the stage at approximately 11 p.m.
It is against this background that Beres decided not to go ahead and stage his annual 'Moment in Time Concert', that his production entity - Harmony House decided to produce the New Year's Eve party concert billed as an all-inclusive affair with dance music provided by musical maestros Donavon Dacres and DJ Inferno.
'A Private Moment with Beres Hammond' the New Year's Eve edition promises to be a magical affair. Presold tickets can be bought at Harmony House, 67 Dumbarton Avenue, Kingston 10 and LG Service Centre, corner of Dunrobin and Constant Spring roads. Limited tickets are available.

Buju fans can't wait

Bwoy since the news broke that Buju will be hitting the stage on January 16, it seems as if the date can't come soon enough for his fans. Yes man it's all the buzz on the streets. Yardflex sources say the way they are behaving it's as if they have never seen Buju perform before!
For real though it should be something to see.
