Stories behind the hymns

On March 40, 1858, over 5,000 men gathered for a mass meeting sponsored by the YMCA. Young Dudley Atkins Tyng, bold, fearless and uncompromising, preached from Exodus 10:11, “Ye that are men, go and serve the Lord.”
Over 1,000 of the men were converted; the sermon was called “one of the most successful of the time”; the entire city was being aroused; a religious awakening was gaining force.
The next week Tyng returned to his family in the country
On Tuesday, April 13,1858, he was witnessing the operation of a corn-thrasher in his barn. Raising his arm to place his hand on the head of a mule which was walking up the inclined lane of the machine, the loose sleeve of his morning gown was caught between the cogs.
Tyng’s arm was lacerated severely, the main artery severed and the median nerve injured. Six days later, he died.
His last words: “Stand up for Jesus, father; stand up for Jesus; and tell my brethren of the ministry, wherever you meet them, to stand up for Jesus.”
The Rev. George Duffield, Jr., pastor of Temple Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, heard the account of his friend’s passing at a memorial service, and wrote this hymn.
Thus, the dying words of an Episcopal clergyman inspired a Presbyterian minister to write a poem.
—Ernest K. Emurian
Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus
Stand up, stand up for Jesus!
Ye soldiers of the cross;
Lift high His royal banner,
It must not suffer loss;
From vict’ry unto vict’ry
His army shall He lead,
Till ev’ry foe is vanquished,
For Christ is Lord indeed.
Stand up!—stand up for Jesus!
The solemn watchword hear;
If while ye sleep He suffers,
Away with shame and fear;
Where’er ye meet with evil,
Within you or without,
Charge for the God of battles,
And put the foe to rout.
Stand up, stand up for Jesus!
The trumpet call obey;
Forth to the mighty conflict
In this His glorious day;
Ye that are men now serve Him
Against unnumbered foes;
Let courage rise with danger,
And strength to strength oppose.
Stand up, stand up for Jesus!
Stand in His strength alone;
The arm of flesh will fail you,
Ye dare not trust your own;
Put on the gospel armor,
And watching unto prayer,
Where duty calls, or danger,
Be never wanting there.
Stand up, stand up for Jesus!
The strife will not be long;
The day the noise of battle,
The next the victor’s song;
To him that overcometh
A crown of life shall be;
He with the King of Glory
Shall reign eternally.

Introducing gospel singer Charmin Blake

Hailing from the parish of Clarendon gospel singer Charmin has had a love for music from as far back as she remember. She began singing at an early age in church and it was not surprising that after finishing high school she gave her life to the Lord and was baptised in the New Testament Church of God. There she got involved in various groups, taught Sunday School and was a choir director for the adult and children choirs.
“It was through this I gained the opportunity to sing at most churches in the community, at gospel concerts and weddings,” she shared.
In June 2004, Charmin migrated to Connecticut in the States there she joined the Triumphant Church of God under the leadership of Bishop Joel Willis. With a passion for ministry she became an active member of the church, ministering, singing and directing various choirs.
With her heart set on making it into the gospel music arena as a singer she entered the Caribbean Gospel Song Competition in 2007 and won with the re-mix of a popular song: Hold My Hand by Glacia Robinson.
That win gave her the exposure she needed and also took got her singing career off to a flying start.
She later released three singles I Am, Hold My Hand and One Touch. Charmin told Chat! that the songs skyrocketed, her singing ministry in the United States with more and more requests coming for her to be on gospel events. Last year August, she did a combination single with Delingo entitled Pray On which “hit the airwaves like a bang”.
“My life dramatically changed with the radio and television interviews, which created a great demand for concerts, church funcions and political events. The outer State events came rolling, places like Boston and New York.
But for Charmin the biggest thrill for her was returning to her homeland, Jamaica to minister. She did this at the Gospel Vibes Radio road show launch during the St Bess gospel celebration.
“To minister to my people gave me a feeling I have never felt before and to receive so much love from them is a feeling I will never forget.”
Charmin says she returned to Connecticut with a new love and greater appreciation for the music ministry.
Charmin recently released her album Singing Glory and she is encouraged by the response it has been garnering.
“The album is all about giving Glory to God for all His wonderful works. My hope is that as people listen, the words will touch their hearts and bring about a difference.”

In Times Like These

During the fearful days at the height of World War II, this comforting hymn was written.
In the midst of a busy day as a housewife, Ruth Caye Jones felt a direct inspiration from the Holy Spirit. She stopped her work to quickly put down both words and music, just as they were given to her by God.
Since that day the hymn has been a blessing to countless Christians at special times of need. It has brought comfort during illness, has been used widely at funerals, has encouraged and challenged Christian workers, and has drawn many to salvation.
Mrs. Jones experienced for herself the consolation the words of the song could bring as she spent time recovering form serious surgery a few years after it was written.
Kenneth W. Osbeck
In times like these, you need a Savior,
In times like these, you need an anchor;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!
CHORUS:
The Rock is Jesus, Yes, He’s the One,
The Rock is Jesus, The only One
Be very sure, be very sure, Your anchor holds,
And grips the Solid Rock.
In times like these, you need the Bible,
In times like these, O be not idle!
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock.
In times like these, I have a Saviour,
In times like these, I have an anchor,
I’m very sure, I’m very sure,
My anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock.

Gospel Vibes Radio spreading its wings

A dream realized is how Delroy Lingo would describe the Gospel Vibes Radio station which has taken off like a rock since its official launch almost a year ago.
With over 12 syndicated stations and more to come on stream, Lingo could not be happier about its success.
“All the feedback we have been getting are positive...some of the comments we get is that it reminds them of back home in Jamaica, listening to radio on a Sunday,” the Connecticut-based host of Gospel Vibes told yarflex.
Host and founder of Gospel Vibes Radio, Delingo says his aim is to promote and elevate new and upcoming gospel artistes and gospel music to the next level, and to preserve the traditional gospel music heritage.
Gospel Vibes Radio has been a long time dream of Delingo who have spent the last three decades in broadcasting Caribbean programmes.
Gospel Vibes Radio features music, interviews, reviews, the spoken word and a prayer line. It currently hosts the largest syndicated Caribbean gospel programme and is located in Hartford, Connecticut with a local office in Kingston.
Delroy Lingo has been involved in the gospel music fraternity for over 30 years. He was road manager for the Golden Touch Gospel Band for several years. Delingo then joined Life Production Company as concert manager, and assistant producer; a position that allowed him to work closely with local and international artistes. However, his dream for the gospel music fraternity was not being fulfilled because he was not able to reach the new upcoming artistes. In 1991, Delingo left Life Production to start his own company Impact Gospel Promotion and Booking Agency. Impact Gospel Promotions was one of the largest and most dynamic in Jamaica’s gospel fraternity. Delingo’s great talent was often displayed through artiste management, and production and distribution of gospel music locally and internationally. Impact Gospel Promotions was booking agency for top Jamaican gospel artistes such as: Joan Flemmings & The Inspirers, Claudell Clarke, Echoes of Joy, Schroeter Brothers, Sister Scully, Lorene Williams, Sandra Brooks, Jerry Thompson, Derrick Douglas, Marvia Wilson-Providence, The Humming Birds, Young Batalions, Clauding Stewart and Billy Joe Neil among many others.
In 1993 Delingo hosted his first radio show Impact Gospel Time on Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) and it ran for three years. He then went to Love FM, Jamaica’s only gospel radio station and worked there for another three years. He later moved to Roots FM where he hosted two radio shows - Gospel Roots and Gospel Vibes.
In 2000, he moved to Hartford, Connecticut and continued his radio ministry with Father G as co-host of Wake Up and Live on WESU 88.1 FM. He now hosts his own show Gospel Vybz.
With the Internet gospel station impacting lives, Delingo says he couldn’t be happier...but according to him “we still have a long way to go.”

Rescue the Perishing

Fanny Crosby was sixty years old when she visited Chicago’s Bowery Mission for the first time in 1880. She little dreamed that it would provide the inspiration for one of her most popular religious poems.
When asked to speak at the close of the service, she rose and said, “There may be a man her who has gone as far as a man can go. If he is present, I want to shake hands with him.” A man did come forward, and finally accepted Christ as Saviour.
Following that initial visit, Fanny Crosby brought many lost souls back into the joy of the Kingdom of God. On another evening that same year she gave this invitation, “If there is a lad here who has wandered from his mother’s Christian teachings, I would like to pray with him at the altar at the close of the service.”
A young man came forward and they prayer together. He rose from his knees with a new light in his eyes, and said, “No I can meet my mother in heaven for I have found her God.” Later a friend remarked, “Isn’t it wonderful what these rescue missions are doing?”
She could hardly wait to get home to her desk and begin writing.
—Ernest K. Emurian
Rescue the perishing,
Care for the dying,
Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;
Weep o’er the erring one,
Lift up the fallen,
Tell them of Jesus the Mighty to save.
Chorus
Rescue the perishing,
Care for the dying;
Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.
Though they are slighting Him
Still He is waiting,
Waiting the penitent child to receive;
Plead with them earnestly,
Plead with them gently:
He will forgive if they truly believe.
Down in the human heart,
Crushed by the tempter,
Feelings lie buried that grace can restore;
Touched by a loving hand,
Wakened by kindness,
Chords that were broken will vibrate once more.
Rescue the perishing,
Duty demands it;
Strength for thy labor the Lord will provide;
Back to the narrow way
Patiently win them;
Tell the poor wand’rer a Savior has died.

Shall We Gather at the River?

In July 1864, Robert Lowry, a Baptist minister, was tired and began thinking of future things, especially of the gathering of the saints around God’s throne. He began to wonder why so many had written so much of the river of death and so little of the river of life. A hymn began to take form, first as a question, “Shall we gather at the river?”
Then came the answer, “Yes, we’ll gather at the river.”
With his heart full of these thoughts, he seated himself at his parlor organ, and both the words and the music of the famous hymn came to him as if by inspiration.
Soon, the words and music to this famous hymn were completed.
There is nothing on earth more restful than the banks of a winding river. And God has placed a river in heaven, a beautiful crystal river that will make glad the hearts of all God’s children someday.
Shall We Gather at the River
Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angel feet have trod,
With its crystal tide for ever
Flowing by the throne of God?
Chorus
Yes, we’ll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river,
Gather with the saints at the river,
That flows by the throne of God.
On the margin of the river,
Washing up its silver spray,
We will walk and worship ever,
All the happy, golden day.
Ere we reach the shining river,
Lay we ev’ry burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown.
Soon we’ll reach the silver river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease;
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace.
At the smiling of the river,
Mirror of the Savior’s face,
Saints whom death will never sever
Lift their songs of saving grace.

Hymn Stories

The gifted Christian musician Joseph T. Webster was often tormented by deep feelings of depression.
On one occasion, when he was in a melancholy mood, he received a visit from his close acquaintance Fillmore Bennett.
Knowing that one way to keep Webster from brooding over his problems was to interest him in writing a hymn tune, Bennett decided he’d try to pen some lyrics that would direct his friend’s thoughts heavenward.
The despondent man himself unwittingly supplied the theme, for when he was asked, “What’s the matter now?” he replied, “Oh, it will be all right by and by!”
“That’s true,” exclaimed Bennett, “trials do generate great glory for us in the sweet by-and-by!”
Inspired by this thought, he immediately sat down and wrote several poetic verses on the subject. When his friend read them, a new look of hope came into his eyes, and his whole attitude changed.
After jotting down some musical notes, Webster took up his violin and played the melody he had composed to fit the words.
Within half an hour the enduring hymn “In the Sweet By-and-By” was born.
Sweet by and by
There’s a land that is fairer than day,
And by faith we can see it afar;
For the Father waits over the way,
To prepare us a dwelling place there.
Chorus
In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore;
In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore.
We shall sing on that beautiful shore
The melodious songs of the blest;
And our spirits shall sorrow no more
Not a sigh for the blessing of rest.
To our bountiful Father above
We will offer our tribute of praise
For the glorious gift of His love,
And the blessings that hallow our days.

Interesting hymn stories

This beautiful hymn was penned by a former slave trader John Newton. One night while attempting to steer the ship through a violent storm, he experienced what he was to refer to later as his “great deliverance.” He recorded in his journal that when all seemed lost and the ship would surely sink, he exclaimed, “Lord, have mercy upon us.” Later in his cabin he reflected on what he had said and began to believe that God had addressed him through the storm and that grace had begun to work for him.
For the rest of his life he observed the anniversary of May 10, 1748 as the day of his conversion, a day of humiliation in which he subjected his will to a higher power. “Thro’ many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ’tis grace has bro’t me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.” He continued in the slave trade for a time after his conversion; however, he saw to it that the slaves under his care were treated humanely.
Amazing Grace
Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound)
That sav’d a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears reliev’d;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believ’d!
Thro’ many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promis’d good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who call’d me here below,
Will be forever mine.

Prosperity
My life is blessed as I give and receive from the abundance of Spirit.
In the coming days, there may be several opportunities to exchange gifts with special people in my life. The gifts I've chosen and prepared reflect my love and appreciation for them. Person-to-person, I share with others from the abundance of Spirit that is freely given and gratefully received.
Presents and cards, cookies and crafts are symbols of thoughtfulness and love. But my experience of prosperity continues and extends even deeper than the objects and the symbols. As I give and receive from an awareness of God's ever-expanding abundance, my life is blessed.
The love I share, the good wishes I extend, and the satisfaction I feel heighten my appreciation for all life. As I
give and receive from the heart, I am fulfilled.
"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap."—Luke

Joy
My heart is open to the joy of the Christ.
As I look forward to celebrating the birth of the Christ Child, I take time to deepen my understanding of this sacred event and the meaning it holds for me.
Through His life, Jesus taught about our own spiritual nature. He showed by example how to honor the Christ qualities, qualities of perfection that are inherent within all.
I embrace each of the Christ qualities of love, life, light, and peace. I ponder their meaning and the ways I can express them more fully. In Scripture, the angel's announcement of joy encourages me to explore the perfection that brings me happiness. I am open to new experiences. With enthusiasm, I celebrate and give thanks for the joy of the Christ that inspires a life of vitality, harmony, and freedom.
"The angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid; for see--I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people.' "--Luke 2:10

The Levy's gospel heritage continues
By: Joan Wilson
Lubert Levy took the top prize in the JCDC's gospel competition in 2004. Four years later his son Ovando is a finalist. It is left to be seen whether he will repeat his dad's achievement.
From as far back as he can remember Ovando has always enjoyed a fascination for singing, he has been doing it since the age of three. In fact he has entered the Tastee Talent Contest on more than one occasion with his siblings under the banner Levy's Heritage.
Ovando said that in 2005 his dad got a revelation from the Holy Spirit that Levy's Heritage would be a group to be reckoned with and since then, he along with his brother Oneil and sister Oshin took Levy's Heritage on the road, performing at churches, concerts and just ministering the word in songs. The group eventually won the Canadian MAJA Award in 2006.
Although Ovando is representing the Levy's Heritage as a sole performer they are still a group. His siblings were left out because of a clause in the contract for the competition. JCDC already had their back up vocals for all performers. But with with support in the wings and driven by his father's support, Ovando will be going all out in the competition to show Jamaica what he can do. He says it's all about ministry and he relish the chance of sharing with many on the road shows.
Hailing from the community of Windsor Heights in St Catherine, Ovando attended St Catherine High School. The JCDC gospel finalist is now a student at the Edna Manley College School of Music where he is pursuing popular music study along with music education.

New internet gospel station coming
By: Joan Wilson
Former Love FM disc jockey Delroy Lingo who is now based in Connecticut will be launching an Internet Gospel station called Gospel Vybz and that mission will be the fulfillment of a dream for the radio jock.
Delingo who had a one on one with YardFlex shared that while being on air in Connecticut he was frustrated by lack of outlet for the traditional Caribbean gospel. And it was there that the dream was laid on his heart to create a station that would be the avenue to play those kinds of songs.
So five years ago he started buying the essential equipment he would need, now he is in sight of that vision.
Later on this month in at the Emmanuel Apostolic Church in Portmore he will be officially launching the Internet site. "The internet gospel station will be streaming live gospel shows, church services and playing your favourite traditional gospel music along with the modern ones," Delingo as he is popular called in the gospel arena told YardFlex.
Delingo, has been involved in the gospel music fraternity for over 30 years. He was Road Manager for the Golden Touch Gospel Band for several years, he later joined Life Production Company as concert manager, and assistant producer; a position that allowed him to work closely with local and international artistes.
In 1999, Delingo migrated to Atlanta, Georgia to host the first ever Caribbean Gospel Music programme Gospel Vibes on WATB 1420 Caribbean JAMS. The programme helped in opening the e door for Caribbean artiste such as Papa San, Grace Thrillers, Junior Tucker and Blood Brothers to perform in Atlanta.
The following year Delingo move to Hartford Connecticut and continued his radio ministry with Father G as co-host of Wake Up and Live on WESU 88.1 FM. He now hosts his own show Gospel Vybz.

Commencing the charged performance with songs such as - "Wanna Know", "Da Vinci Code" and "One Soul" - Jason shocked the crowd into a spirit-filled frenzy.

On viewing the artiste's merchandise table, hundreds of fans could be seen vying for copies of the highly demanded album. "The company [Daystar Promotions] brought in over several hundred copies of the album for Gospelfest, and they all sold out within three hours," said a Daystar representative. Junior Tucker is not turning back
He admits; Only God can get the credit for all that has taken place in the extraordinary life of Junior Tucker.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, he began singing at the age of 5. At age 7 he became a household name in his country performing his first #1 song "Happy" and also began traveling internationally. Without a shadow of doubt everyone knew being on stage was what he was born to do.
With tremendous success, he navigated his way through three international recording contracts which have literally taken him across the world. He has toured throughout the United States, UK, Japan, Mexico and the Caribbean. At 12 years old he was signed to Island Records and at 14 he had a recording contract with Geffen Records, USA. At 23 he signed to Virgin Records, UK. In 1991 Junior was released from Virgin and returned to his roots to pursue a career in Jamaican Dancehall Music.
Dancehall brought its accolades, number one songs, Singer of the Year titles and a high profile lifestyle. As time progressed his life became far from 'Happy'. Despite so called fortune and fame, behind the scenes his life was in pieces, spent chasing the next hit song to stay on top and fill the void.
The death of his father and the birth of his first child, led to a period of searching for answers to a deeper meaning to life. He investigated various religions but still found no answers. He penned songs like, "I Pray" and "Praise His Name", whilst having no true knowledge of the God he was singing about. Bombarded by religion, a distorted childhood and being plagued by nightmares, he cried out one night "God if you are real, allow me to sleep!" God answered: he slept as never before. He woke up completely delivered, knowing that he was a Christian. He publicly confessed Jesus as his Lord and Savior that week at a gospel concert in Kingston and soon after was baptized.
It has been 9 years and he has never returned to his secular career. He states, "There is nothing to go back to." Coming into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ has brought clarity to his once hazed purpose and destiny. To his life, God has given direction, and to his gift, God has given purpose.
Junior, his wife Trudy and their 3 girls, Chyna, Zoe and Paige now reside in Clewiston.
Through Junior Tucker Ministries, Junior not only sings but preaches the Gospel and conducts praise and worship workshops. God has taken him back to many of the nations where he performed as a secular artiste to now wins souls for the Kingdom. God has even given him new territories to take the gospel and to set the captives free.
His fourth Reggae Gospel Album titled "Victory Worship from the Islands" is definitely a reflection of his growth and maturity in Christ. Not only are there great foot stomping beats but also powerful praise and worship songs designed to usher in the presence of the Lord.

Kirk Davis now on the alleluia side
By: Joan Wilson
During his reign with the Shocking Vibes crew, Kirk would thrill his many fans with love songs but in the quiet hours he would be tortured with the thoughts that his soul was not alright with the Lord. "Sometime I would toss and turns, cause I know that if I should die my soul would not be ready," he told YardFlex.
Then three years ago, the demand to make things right in his life became overwhelming as Kirk said he was lying in his bed one night in New York and reflecting and the thought came to him that he need to let go of all other vibes and put God first, there is no repentance in the grave. Still he resisted the urge and continued to do his secular songs, it was a constant battle, but somehow he managed to put the conviction aside as he did shows in Japan, the Caribbean, Europe and other places.
The convictions came on more urgent last year December when he lost his grandmother...from then Kirk knew he was fighting a losing battle. According to Kirk one day in January of this year while driving to Spanish Town a clear distinct voice said to him, "you have to give your life to the Lord or you gonna lose your life." Kirk could not sleep when he got home, he tossed and turned for two nights with that same voice taunting him until blessedly he gave in and called his friend St. Matthew a gospel artiste and told him he wanted to be baptized right away.
St. Matthew couldn't believe his sudden decision, but he managed to convince him that he was indeed serious. His friend finally took him to a pastor who baptized him the same day. Since giving his life to the Lord, Kirk says it's the best decision he has ever made, besides now he can sleep peacefully! Of course the usual temptations are there, but he continues to overcome and press along, changing direction in the kind of songs he now records.
Kirk has since released his first gospel album "Don't Deny Me" which features tracks such as "Peace On Earth", "Let Love Be The answer", "Carry Me Lord" and "Glory Glory".
Next month he will be heading to Kenya for a gospel showcase.

Dobby Dobson
By: Joan Wilson
"Life was one big bowl of jello and condensed milk...my conscience was clear, I harboured no bad feelings towards anyone, I was being in tune with the universe. I left Jamaica to reside in New York away from family and most close friends, so my 'friends' were now my new associates or people I had not seen in a long time...and I casually got drawn into a lifestyle that was foreign to me. Night clubs had been a part of my life in Jamaica, what with me having sung with a dozen bands for most of my life, but New York after hour joints were different. These places opened after most legitimate niteries closed, and stayed open into the next day...mostly run without licenses, they catered to a different crowd...into which I assimilated myself. Liquor flowed, drugs prevailed and ladies were easy. It was nothing to find yourself sneaking out of the joint to find the sun high in the sky," were the earnest words of singer Dobby Dobson to YardFlex as he spoke about his rise from hitting rock bottom by the saving power of Jesus Christ.
Today, Dobby his using his experience to witness to thousands and seeing them experience the kind of change he has too. But that change didn't just happen overnight, the catalyst started in 2000 when his mother died. According to Dobby a wave of depression came over him. When he returned to New York the sadness was still with him and no amount of girls or drugs could make him feel any better.
It all finally came to a head one day while driving on Interboro Parkway one night in Brooklyn. Dobby pulled off the road and allowed the tears to flow. "I bawled until I felt totally empty" he told YardFlex.
Things began to look up for Dobby when a good friend of his invited him to a church she had started attending the Bethel Church on Jamaica Avenue in Queens. She invited him to a 5 am service with Prophetess Juanita Bynum. Until now Dobby doesn't know how he got the will power to get out of bed so early for an early morning service, "just think, snow, cold, and getting out of bed!"
According to Dobby listening to Juanita, he didn't know if she was speaking his life or hers. When the tears started rolling down his face he couldn't even tell who he was crying for, himself or her! There was no doubt about who needed Jesus though, that need was so overpowering to recommit his life to the Lord that Dobby Dobson could not ignore it. He accepted and since then there has been peace like he has never known.
Since being saved Dobby has now turned his attention to gospel music However, he still performs his love songs, but he no longer runs the little risqué jokes he used to, as he says the Christian life is no joke thing.
Among the Christian projects Dobby has done is "Those Days Are Gone", "Tomorrow" and "You Raised Me Up". Dobby's new CD "Love Songs For Jesus" is expected to drop any day now.

Jason Mighty - a real gospel revolutionary
Reggae music possesses the undisputed ability to touch the spirit, the soul and the body regardless of face, creed, color or nationality. Singer, songwriter, Minister Jason Might, (his real name), is revolutionizing reggae praise and worship with his soulful ballads and uplifting praise tunes. Blending smooth, distinct vocals with musical hooks and slurs that can appease the most discerning listener; Jason imparts a glimpse of a genuine relationship with his Savior to the forefront of his songs.
Born in the sun-rich island of Jamaica, to a musically inclined mother, Jason grew up hearing the time tested, sacred hymns that are near and dear to many of our hearts. When asked about his inspiring musical talent he states, "In the year 2000 God gave me a mandate to preach hope and salvation through my music; be it on dancehall or roots reggae rhythms. The message is the same that has been spread by our Savior himself. I simply sing the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ." Confirming his status as a minister, Jason was also ordained as a music minister and a deacon at his home church, New Life Assemblies Church of God.
This year, Jason released his debuted album entitled "Cornerstone". His hard work did not go unnoticed by his peers and the industry, as he was awarded the Best Gospel Collaboration award at the 2008 Reggae Academy Awards. He was then nominated at the 2008 Flame Awards for Best Foreign Recording Artiste and Best Foreign Gospel Recording of the year.
The award winning, Jamaican born artiste has toured in various countries including: Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, Bahamas, Canada, England, St. Marteen, St. Kitts, The United States and Turks and Caicos. With his impressive stage presence he has shared the spotlight with fellow international gospel recording artistes such as: Kirk Franklin, Dr. Bobby Jones, Micah Stampley, Martha Munizzi, Mary Mary, Canton Jones, Sitchie, Papa San, Prodigal Son, DJ Nicholas and many more. He has also shared the gospel of Christ on shows that featured artistes such as Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, Ninjaman, Neyo, Akon and more.
Jason's worshipful blend of a contemporary yet radical style has made him a hit within all age groups, and amongst musical veterans and critics. On his hit songs, "One Soul (ft. DJ Nicholas)", "Da Vinci Code", and "Can' Walk This Life Alone", Jason exhibits his talent in mixing hard hitting lyrics with an authentic Jamaican flavour, leaving his hearers on the doorstep of the throne room of God.
"I believe that music can evolve. The same as how our methods of transportation has evolved - we've gone from a horse and carriage to motor vehicles. Our methods of delivery must change to suit the needs of our generation, but the message must stay the same. That is my mandate, that is my message."

JCDC Gospel Finalist Chosen
After several grueling rounds of elimination, the ten finalists that will compete in the 2008 Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) Gospel Song Competition have been selected. Over three hundred aspiring gospel artists auditioned in Kingston, St. Catherine, Manchester, St. Mary and St. James, all with original entries.
The JCDC then invited those participants with completely original songs to participate in an elimination round. From the elimination round, 25 semi finalists were selected and invited to compete in a private session for a spot in the finals.
All ten finalists hailing from the parishes of Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Thomas, St. Catherine, St. Ann and Manchester will now move on to working with some of Jamaica's top gospel producers on a compilation album that will be released before the final competition.
They will also participate in Gospel Vibe a television reality based series that premiered last year. The public will get a chance to see the finalist before the finals, as they will tour the island throughout the month of June.

A family singing praise together
A unique family of talented vocalists and instrumentalists, The Murrills are endowed with the ability to reach and rebuild broken spirits through the ministries of song and prayer. With an amazing chemistry that can only be shared between six close knit siblings, The Murrills have already wowed audiences through their work with the famed Tri-City Singers. Their debut CD "Family Prayer" is being released June 3, 2008 on Zomba Gospel. "Family Prayer" is produced by Grammy Award winner Donald Lawrence, who first worked with the group as part of his celebrated choir The Tri-City Singers.
Comprised of Darwin, Damion, Donnell, Andre, Roger and sister Arnetta – who was a featured Tri-City lead vocalist - The Murrills, guided by their mother, began singing together as children and "Family Prayer" is replete with songs that bring to life the old adage "the family that prays together, stays together." Their music beautifully emphasizes the love and strength, ups and downs of family, with faith and togetherness being the central themes.
"If only by the example we show of the unity and power of the family, I believe we can be a force for healing and reunification," says Arnetta.
"We want our lives and music-as a strong, close, loving Family, to count for something meaningful." Roger Murrill adds, "If the way we live, and the music we make, will help ease anyone's pain, heal anyone's brokenness, we will have accomplished something long lasting and important."
The first single "Family (There's A Healing)" is an emotional ballad that pierces the heart with its passionate sentiment that "God has come to heal the family" and its genuine plea for broken families everywhere to reunite. As a bonus, "Family Prayer" is enhanced with sheet music that features piano and vocal notations for "Family (There's A Healing)."
Other highlights on FAMILY PRAYER include "This Is How I Feel About You," an earnest devotion describing the limitless capabilities of God; while "I Declare War" is a punching, up-tempo jam pronouncing victory over any temptation or obstacle. The Murrills also show a versatile edge with a heart-throbbing remake of New Edition's classic "Can You Stand The Rain."
The Murrills will perform April 27 at the 2008 Silver Rose Awards & Auction Gala for the Jenesse Center. Halle Berry is the event Chairperson and a huge supporter of The Jenesse Center, a non-profit domestic violence program in South Central, Los Angeles. The Gala will be hosted by Wanda Sykes and other performers include Jennifer Hudson.

The Grand Ole Opry may be more famous for its weekly country music performances, but gospel music is woven just as tightly into the heritage of the famed building and the Dove Awards will culminate its show with an "Opry at the Doves" featuring gospel, country and bluegrass artists singing their powerfully simple songs of faith And conviction. Get Ready for Valley Gospel Fest
Top performers in modern gospel music will be on stage for the first-ever Valley Gospel Fest, slated for May 10 at the Louis and Sandra Berkman Amphitheater at the Historic Fort Steuben in Southwestern Ohio.
Organizers outlined festival details during a press conference Thursday at the Starkdale Presbyterian Church.
The performers, who will include three-time Grammy-Award winner Ashley Cleveland, Jonathan White, Curtis Lewis and the Aliquippa Church in the Round Gospel Choir, the Word of Life Singers, Seasons and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Choir, will be on hand for the free festival scheduled to run from noon to 7 p.m.
The concert, co-sponsored by the Starkdale Presbyterian Church and the Community Foundation of Jefferson County, will be a "huge event" for Steubenville and Jefferson County, according to Jody Glaub, board member of the Community Foundation of Jefferson County and a Starkdale Presbyterian Church elder.
"This is going to be a community-wide, ecumenical celebration," said Glaub, adding that local churches will be invited to participate. "I think this is a wonderful time to be having this. Everyone has been so positive about the event. It's going to be a wonderful Saturday afternoon."
Glaub said funding for the concert will be through the Foundation's Glory to Christ fund, and community churches are invited to participate by hosting booths to give away merchandise or sell baked goods, crafts or cookbooks. Those attending are asked to take a canned good or monetary donation for Urban Mission Ministries, added Glaub.
Keith Murdock, Foundation board member, will serve as the master of ceremonies for the concert.
"Bob Neal also is going to provide fireworks at the end of the festival," said Glaub.
The city has committed to closing off a portion of Third Street near the amphitheater, while local pastors are asked to volunteer as greeters at the gates, said Glaub.
Terri Antill, community foundation director, said her organization is "pleased to be able to sponsor the event," while Dan Wood, an organizer, said the event will be an uplifting experience for an Ohio Valley hit with hard economic times.
"We want this to be more than a one-time event," said Wood of the concert. "We think this will give our area a boost."
Literature provided during the press conference describes Cleveland as blending "rock, blues, gospel and folk with her distinctive, open-tuned guitar sound that has won her three Grammy Awards, two Dove Awards and a legion of devoted fans."
One of Nashville's most in-demand session singers, Cleveland has performed on more than 300 albums, including those of John Hiatt, Emmylou Harris, Faith Hill, Jars of Clay, Don Henley, Amy Grant, Etta James and Michael McDonald.
There are 20 booth spaces available for local churches, and spaces will be assigned as applications are accepted until April 30. In case of rain the event will be held at the First Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Get ready for Women Empowerment Gospel Fest

On The Rocks Entertainment, Inc. presents the Women Empowerment Gospel Festival at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. The event will be hosted by Juanita Bynum and will feature performances by a dynamic line up of Grammy Award winning artists including Yolanda Adams, Pastor Shirley Caesar and The Clark Sisters.
In addition to musical performances, the Rev. Dr. Carl L. Washington, current officiating pastor of New Mount Zion Baptist Church located in Harlem, New York will be a special guest speaker. A host of celebrity speakers will join Rev. Washington in sharing positive and powerful messages for women of all spiritual backgrounds. The event will give women the opportunity to come together and highlight the efforts of some of the most non-vocal, yet obedient disciples of the Lord.
Several women of the Gospel who are true advocates of inspirational empowerment for women and embody the power of worship and the impact that comes along with it will be honoured during the event.
This event is the first one promoted by On The Rocks Entertainment at a major union house. The company founders, Derrick Sanders and Shelby Joyner, began the concert promotion company 13 years ago after coming to the realization that working a 9 to 5 job was not for them.
"We had a vision," states Sanders. "We had the vision of taking 'On The Rocks Entertainment' from small local parties to the mainstream for Concert promotions. We went from a fan base of about 1,000 to over 10,000 strong. When everyone told us it couldn't happen, we proved them wrong every single time. We are now moving to bigger venues like Radio City Music Hall and The Beacon Theater. This is what dreams are made of. We believe that. Life is about the journey, not the destination."

Kerron Proves the Power in Praise
Kerron began singing at the tender age of eight years in Jamaica in her local church and thereon set her sights and ambition on becoming an instrument of music for the Lord. She has moved tens of thousand while touring the island with the Perpetual Team and at local churches and the accolades have started rolling in. Her ministry is being demanded locally and on the international scene.
Born, August 22, 1982, in the parish of St Andrew, she is the fifth child of Lascelles and Derisa Ennis and grew up in the Patrick City Community, where her artistic ability has captured the hearts of many. She has been the choir director for the Youth and Combined choirs of the Boulevard Church of the Nazarene and has received the commission from the Lord to sing and to make His praise glorious. Her dedication for the Lord is indelibly etched into her motto of Acts 20:24, "but none of these things moved me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God."
After entering the Jamaica Cultural Development's Gospel Festival in 2003 with the title song, "No Wonder," written by Clifton and Margaret Clarke, Kerron came in third place. She then became a well sought after alto singer. From this the musical stage of greatness was then set and Kerron has no intention of looking back.
Kerron has shared the stage with many local and international artists like: Michael W. Smith, Marvia Providence, Toby Mac and Huntley Brown. On the local scene, she graced the stage with the Katalysts Crew, DJ Nicholas, Lt. Stitchie, Carlene Davis, Judy Mowatt, Papa San and Chevelle Franklyn just to name a few. She also performed at the Spring Break gospel festival "Fun in the Sun", an annual event sponsored by Glory Music where the merging of international and local artist meet on the same stage.
When the need came for the Jamaican population to 'bawl' out on behalf of the nation, it was Kerron who led the Perpetual Praise team in worship at the launch of the Jamaica Bawl Out 2, held in October 2004 at the St. William Grant Park in downtown Kingston.
Presently, Kerron has her pre-release album on the market and has shared studio time with Lt Stitchie with "We Need God" and DJ Nicholas with "Daddy Oh." The songs have been getting air play on a number of radio stations in Jamaica and have been number one for six months on LOVE FM chart. Fans have reported hearing their favorite Kerron track on Roots FM, Mus Bus, LOVE FM, RJR, Mega Jam, Irie FM among others radio stations. And on the international scene she has been aired on Mystic 1580 AM in the US, as well as on stations in New York, New Jersey, Boston, Canada and Europe.

Bloody Sunday' commemorated this weekend
By: Elizabeth Smith
The 43rd anniversary of 'Bloody Sunday' and a re-enactment of the Selma to Montgomery March is being commemorated this year between March 6 and 10.
Known as the Bridge Crossing Jubilee, this 15th annual staging will be graced by the presence of guests like: Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Cornel West, Ted Kennedy, Jesse Jackson, C.T. Vivian, Al Sharpton and Faya Rose Sanders and Martin Luther King III amongst many others.
The theme of this year's jubilee is "One vote, One Mic, One Movement: From Selma to Jena and Beyond."
In 1965, the Edmund Pettus Bridge was the scene of an attack on hundreds of voting rights marchers by law enforcement officials on what was later called, 'Bloody Sunday.'
Prompted by the removal of Black males from voting rolls by Alabama's Constitution of 1901, Blacks in Alabama fought hard for voting rights; one of the most valuable rights of any citizen.
Blacks struggled for this enfranchisement in a variety of ways in the 1950s and 60s, including: NAACP's legal strategies via the 1957 Civil Rights Act; voter education projects in 1965; mass meetings and rallies in Black churches that were often met with police violence including the notable killing of Jimmy Lee Jackson in 1965; hundreds of African Americans lining up at registrar offices attempting to register to vote and hundreds of voting rights activists being beaten and jailed by police.
In their quest to complete the march from Selma to Montgomery that openly and loudly protested against and defied laws forbidding them a vote, Blacks were forced to make several attempts:
o 1st Attempt, March 7, "Bloody Sunday": Marchers trekked from Browns Chapel AMEZ to Edmund Pettus Bridge, but were viciously attacked by local police and state troopers.
o 2nd Attempt, March 9: Marchers trekked to Pettus Bridge, knelt, prayed, and then returned to Browns Chapel, but Rev. James Reeb dies when beaten by white vigilantes.
o 3rd Attempt, March 21: Marchers, with the protection of a federal court order and a Federalized National Guard, proceeded to the state Capitol to petition for voting rights.
o March 24: At "Stars for Freedom" rally near Montgomery, at City of Saint Jude, world-renowned entertainers performed inspirational show then joined the march the next day.
o March 25: Marchers arrived at state Capitol, where Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech; Viola Luizzo, a marcher, was killed by the Ku Klux Klan that night in Lowndes County.
• Aftermath of the March:
o August 6, 1965: President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
o November 1966: Lucius Amerson was elected sheriff of Macon County, Alabama, the first African American elected to this post since Reconstruction.
o In 1970 two black men were elected to the legislature—the first since Reconstruction.
o To this day, movements for democracy the world over claim Alabama's voting rights struggle as an inspiration and sing the movement's anthem, "We Shall Overcome." Rev. C.T. Vivian, Chair of the National Voting Rights Museum, says: "We must never forget the dedication, passion and courageousness that were paramount in the struggle of African-Americans to achieve the right to vote in this country. We must never forget the importance of Selma, Alabama in this country's Civil Rights narrative. This annual celebration, with its re-enactment of the historic Selma-to-Montgomery March, is a pilgrimage that every American should experience."
Past attendees of the Annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee include: Rosa Parks, Congressman John Lewis, Coretta Scott King, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, lawyer Johnny Cochran, President Bill Clinton, Stephen King and many more.

Chevelle Franklyn to minister in the Bronx
By: Elizabeth Smith
Chevelle Franklyn will headline Ebenezer's 75th Anniversary Gospel Concert in New York on Friday, April 14. The international multi-award winning singer of contemporary gospel masterpieces will join other 'ministers of the gospel through the arts,' including: Unconditional, The EPHN Temples of Praise Dancers and Choeur Magnificant.
Expectations are high for the concert, since Chevelle's humility, coupled with her exuberance and love for God have been a high source of inspiration around the world, according to the testimonies of many.
Ministering in song was a natural progression for Chevelle, whose own story of one day just deciding to make a change from super stardom on the secular scene, was a clear indication, that God is in control. In 1998, Chevelle felt, "tired of the empty way of life and hopelessness," and declared on stage during a concert, "I can't do this anymore." Chevelle said, "I did not hear a message or anything, but I felt the calling of God. I just broke down on the stage... I knew there was something better out there."
From singing Kirk Franklyn's "Silver and Gold" at that moment, Chevelle went on to a collaboration in 2000 with Papa San on his award-winning album, "Victory," that led to the beginning of a stream of awards starting with a Marlin Award for the track, "Touch From You."
In 2001 her new lifestyle was signed, sealed and delivered to the world, with the debut gospel album titled, "Joy." Having racked up many awards for that Danny Brownie - Mainstreet Records co-produced success, Chevelle released a new self produced album called, "His Way;" on her own label – N.O.W. Records (No Other Way).
Chevelle is sure to stir up a storm at the concert, as she did in the early 90's, singing charted hits like: "Nice and Naughty" and "No Pushover" - as well as number one collaborations with Spragga Benz, Shabba Ranks and the 1997 "Dancehall Queen" smash combination turned movie soundtrack feature, with Beenie Man.
The diversity of Chevelle's ministry today, is highlighted with the outstanding re-make of "Dancehall Queen," called, "Come King Jesus" that is featured on her latest album, "His Way."
The concert will take place at Lehman College, 250 Bedford Park Blvd in the Bronx.

Carlene Davis – batting for the Lord
By: Joan Wilson
Internationally acclaimed Gospel recording artiste Carlene Davis is one of the most dynamic music ministers coming out of Jamaica. As this Caribbean Hall of Fame Awardee testifies in song, the powerful message of God's love flows through her, bringing hope and healing to the heart of the listener. God has truly anointed and appointed her to affect this generation and her mission is to bring deliverance and transformation to a hurting world through the ministry of music, thus fulfilling The Great Commission.
YardFlex can attest that she is well on her way in fulfilling this commission. Already she is being requested by quite a few Caribbean leaders to come and minister in their country.
For Carlene it's an opportunity she more than welcomes as she says each Caribbean island she has been to, through the power of God lives have been transformed.
She is sometimes amazed at the response she receives as she ministers ...but that's the Lord working through her.
Right now she is preparing for a Caribbean/European tour for the month of March.
One thing we can say is that she has her calendar full, in addition to gearing up for the tour she is working on a project which has her very excited.
She is still holding the information close to her chest but we did manage to pry from her that she "writing a lot of lyrics" for it ...could it be an album? Well time will tell.
This minister's life is very full and it's real creative juggling how she makes key time for the family. As in between juggling tour and the project, she will be conducting a series of prayer summits leading up to a big event in May. It will be the Jamaica Broilers 50th Anniversary celebration slated to be held at Kings House. We will keep you posted.

United Church of Canada insults Reverend Daryl Gray
By: Janice Dayle
Can a fine upstanding practicing Minister of religion be banned from visiting his former congregation? In Montreal some factions of the United Church of Canada are trying to do just that.
Reverend Daryl Gray who once held the position of Minister at the Union United Church, was sent a letter from David Clinker, Supervising Minister of Union United Church, stating that Gray's attending the funeral for the mother of one of his current church members in December 2007, was "in violation" of an agreement made between Gray and The Montreal Presbytery.
According to Clinker in the letter, Reverend Gray was, "not to enter the premises or to take part in the events of Union United Church." Clinker also stated in the letter that he "insist" that Gray follow the agreement made by the Montreal Presbytery, and that Gray is not allowed to enter the church building for any reason without Clinker's "expressed permission".
The alarming side to this story is that the Minister in question, Reverend Daryl Gray, is no less than one of the most compassionate, sincere and aware, community focused - Black individuals in a position of leadership in Montreal.
"Bottom line is – 'The Rev' keeps it real, I've met no other preacher in Montreal who speaks as if he knows my every move and need...he is almost like a group counselor and that's the sign of a good reverend for me," Jade Smyth a member of Gray's new Imani Full Family and Gospel Church told YardFlex.
In a very public way some years ago, the United Church of Canada relieved Reverend Gray of his duties at Montreal's and Quebec's oldest Black Church – The Union United Church. Gray reportedly had not satisfied the United Church of Canada that he was actively engaged in professional development, as they had requested.
Situated in the inner city neighborhood of Little Burgundy where Blacks in Montreal have a rich history, the Union United Church was established by 26 blacks who were forced out of white churches in Montreal by white church leaders who would not allow Montreal Blacks to sit besides white members. It is ironic that with such a history of displacement, that a Black reverend – and not just any Black reverend, but that Daryl Gray, could be treated in this way.
There are many heroes of African descent in Montreal, but few stand up for equal rights and justice in as vocal a way as Reverend Daryl Gray does today and has in the past. Known for: questioning authorities when issues seem nebulous; getting up close and personal with the street guys, when things in the neighborhood get out of hand; initiating community activism for all round betterment for particularly Blacks and for creating a wonderful new Black Church called Imani, Gray has been credited for saving lives, nurturing souls and giving his all to youth.
This move of the United Church of Canada remains mind boggling to most, but seems to be seeped in bias.
Gray maintains that at no time did he agreed with the United Church of Canada not to enter Union United Church, and that he stated to the United Church representatives at a Union Board meeting that he definitely would not agree to any such provision. And recalls that many black members of the Union Board expressed outraged that this would be suggested to Gray by the United Church. Gray also attended a Special Celebration Service at Union to commemorate Union's 100 year anniversary, where he received a warm welcome from members of his former congregation.
A defiant Gray says he will be visiting Union United Church today for the closing programme for Black History Month and will not seek permission from the United Church to do so.
"This is plantation mentality to think that white folk still think that they can dictate to black people how to worship, where to worship, and who can lead them in worship. It's an insult to the Black community", said Gray.
He added, "I have no problem with Union United Church. This letter did not come from Union, but from United Church leaders. They (United Church officials) didn't even have the respect for Union to cc a copy of the letter to their 'Black' Official Board."

Stitchie puts "Real Life Story" on the global streets
By: Joseph Cunningham
Gospel deejay Stitchie has been spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ through his music, with great intensity on the international scene.
Recently, he returned from the United States where he promoted his third album, titled "Real Life Story." The official release of the album took the form of a concert held at the Harvest Fire Worship Centre in Florida. There was also a live radio launch on Florida's Mystic 1400.
The album has 17 tracks, produced by the likes of Bobby Digital, Don McDowell, Shawn Brown and Rohan McDermott.
Stitchie says, "It is the best album I have done to date. The engineers were good. The concepts of the songs are just a review of my life, real issues with spiritual solutions."
Stitchie said the album was released in Jamaica last Tuesday. While here, he says he will be using the opportunity to promote the album and video for the title track. The video was shot in Spanish Town by Billy Yapp, who also directed Stitchie's "Fast and Pray." "It is very hardcore and dancehall to the max," Stitchie said.
He revealed that the album has been doing well as it was on the Grammy list for Best Reggae Album, but it did not receive enough votes for a nomination.
"The album made the initial Grammy list but it did not get enough votes to get a nomination. It is the first time gospel has reached this far. The next time around we will be in the nomination," he confidently said.
Since the album's international release last year Stitchie has toured the Caribbean, the U.S and Europe.
On the European tour he performed alongside secular Reggae stars like Yellowman, Capleton, Jimmy Cliff, Junior Kelly, Derrick Morgan, Ce'Cile, Admiral Bailey, Ward 21, Alton Ellis, Dennis Alcapone, Lone Ranger and the recently deceased Lucky Dube.
Stitchie was given a eight-page spread in Riddim Magazine that will be in the March edition. Riddim also named "Real Life Story" as one of the top 10 albums for 2007.
He will spend a significant part of February promoting his album in Jamaica, but by March he will be off again to start his tours of several places in Europe, Canada, US and Africa.
Stitchie is also currently writing his first book, 'The Power of Determination,' that will be released later this year. This book will be his autobiography.

JCee...Started from the very top!
By: Joseph Cunningham
Her face has become very prominent and it's not just a promotional campaign. The Jamaican Gospel singer, JCee was selected to be among the final 20 in a talent search hosted by world leading television network, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
The competition, called "The Next Big Thing," received entries from 88 countries. It was held late last year. Reflecting on the experience JCee said, "I did not follow up on my entry until the BBC called to say they liked the song. I told them a little bit about it, and. they called back to say I made top 20."
Since her phenomenal achievement, she admits, "I'm more known now. People have told me they heard the song on BBC radio." She added that her music features hardcore Dancehall and Reggae rhythms fused with various other genres.
Recognizing her Christian responsibility, she said, "I want my music to represent the Kingdom of God, but I'm from Jamaica so I want my music to represent my culture as well." She says she is a full-time music minister, stating that, "I try to put what's on my heart in my songs. Each song has a different message, but they still glorify God."
Currently, JCee is affiliated with On The Shout Records, founded and owned by DJ Nicholas.
"I wanna take gospel all over the world, I just want to share the message of Jesus Christ," she adds. "I want my music to be a tool to set people free," she says, "I want to give young people hope. Your situation doesn't have to be your outcome."

DJ Nicholas passionate for Christ & music
By: Joseph Cunningham
His powerful sound has many comparing him to Bounty Killer and Baby Cham, but he is not a secular artiste, instead, DJ Nicholas is a Gospel deejay. He attributes his strong vocals to spiritual dedication. "Seeking the lord brings power," he said.
Speaking with YardFlex via telephone on Friday afternoon, he revealed the interesting tale of how he began "walking with the lord."
"I was a rastaman who was living in accordance with the principles of
Rastafari. This was the case until I was reading my bible and saw the
scripture which reads...There is no other name under heaven, given
among men whereby we must be saved, but by the name of Jesus."
Nicholas said the bible passage made him realize that Jesus Christ is the only way. Praises be to God, he received the word with thanksgiving. As a result, he shaved his hair and turned fully to the bible for guidance and inspiration. He made the bold step of attending a church crusade at the New Life Assembly of God, Constant Spring Road. There, he got saved and baptized.
The passion of knowing Christ was accompanied by another passion...the passion of gospel music. He pursued his dreams of doing God's music by approaching Gospel producer, Tommy Cowan, who recorded his first single "Barrier." Nicholas continued to produce songs such as "Pop Off The Word" and collaborated with Kerron Ennis on "Holy Ghost Church." He has worked on projects for Bless a.k.a. Prodigal Son such as the concert, strong>'Recharge' which played a great part in his earlier development. Chevelle Franklyn, Robert & Jeneve Bailey and Danny Browne are some of the others Nicholas has worked with.
Ministering in Canada, USA, South America, London England and several small Islands, Nicholas shared the stage with international acts: Papa San, CeCe Winans, Alvin Slaughter and was opening act for Kirk Franklin in St Maarten. He is currently one of the Directors of 'On The Shout Records' a new gospel recording company which currently has 2 new gospel sensations - singers J-Cee and J-Lee, under its portfolio.
Nicholas won the Artist of the Year Award and the New Artist of the Year Award at the 2006 Maja Awards in Kingston Jamaica; he was also one of the contenders for this year's big prize, Album of the Year for his debut project "On the Shout." He received 12 nominations for the 2006 Caribbean Gospel Music Marlin Awards, where he also won New Artist of the Year and Duo of the Year for the single, "Holy Ghost Church."
More than a Gospel musician, Nicholas says he is also a minister, with a "Ministry Statement": To minister the undiluted word of God uncompromisingly through the language of the Caribbean music in a most Professional way to the furtherance of God's Kingdom.

Here comes the Gospel Evangelist
By: Joseph Cunningham

Kevin Downswell, the 2003 National Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) Gospel Festival winner came to prominence with his original entry, "Praise." From the preliminary stages of that competition, Kevin had distinguished himself as the favourite to win with his professional voice control.
His performance in the competition was phenomenal, considering that he
only realized he could sing, at age 13.
Unlike many musicians, Kevin is not motivated by stardom, but instead, his passion is fuelled by the motto, "That Christ may increase and I
decrease." St. John 3 v 30.
In 2005 Kevin was appointed to the office of an Evangelist and graduated from the University of the West Indies with honors in Bio-Chemistry that same year. "I was commissioned by God to be a full-time minister during that period, and so I had dedicated myself in much fasting and prayer." He said seeking God at that time was very critical, because he had planned to become a Medical Doctor. "God had another plan," he added.
Since then Kevin has been ministering throughout Jamaica at conferences, and in foreign lands as well. He is a member of the renown "Perpetual Praise Team" and also minister at his home church, Faith Mission Assembly of God.
He does preach the word, but music is his greater talent, and so he
continues to sing, and is now a prolific songwriter. A co-writer for the 2006 mega Gospel hit, "Nah Bow" - the song that won a Marlin Award for Gospel Reggae Recording of the year; Kevin has also recorded two singles with Tennyson Walters, for the album "Reggae For Christ."
"Reggae For Christ" was the first Gospel production to top the New York and South Florida Reggae charts simultaneously.
He is currently working with Spurr Empire – a Jamaican artist management and music production organization, and his album is due for released in the winter of 2008. Kevin said the album will have 15 tracks, among them will be the currently popular "Praise," "Joy," "Still Stand," "Change is Coming" and "Nothing Just Happens."

Kirk Franklin releases "The Fight of My Life"
On December 18 Kirk Franklin, who is credited with revolutionizing gospel music, will release an exceptional collection of all new material.
"Carol and Michael are fighting for their marriage. Deborah
is fighting to keep from losing her mind. Jeff is fighting to keep
his home. David is fighting for his faith. Welcome to "The Fight of My Life," Franklin says of the CD titled with the same name.
The first single from the album, "Declaration (This Is
It!)," is an upbeat and encouraging song that re-interprets the smooth-groove classic hit, "This Is It," co-written by
Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. It addresses surviving the everyday trials and tribulations through a positive declaration of one's purpose in life.
"This song is a statement that 'serves notice' on unnecessary
frustrations, relationships and circumstances that continue to attack
our life," says Franklin. "Unlike the children of Israel
who wandered in the wilderness, when we totally surrender to God,
what took 40 years, God 'can' fix in 40 minutes." Declaration (This
Is It!) is currently the #1 most added and #1 most increased airplay
at Gospel radio, and is also impacting urban radio.
After more than 15 years as the top selling, multiple Grammy
award-winning contemporary gospel artist, Kirk Franklin continually demonstrates that he is more than just an artist - he is a voice and a musical balm for his generation. "The Fight of My Life" is another display of the genius fusion of his positive message and urban beats that have made him a mainstay atop Billboard charts for more than a decade.
"The Fight of My Life" takes the listener on a spirit-filled journey from the soaring "Help Me Believe" - a letter set to music that speaks for those who may be doubting their own faith but are looking to God for re-confirmation and strength; to the more
traditional, tambourine-shakin', foot-tappin', "He Will Supply"
that will surely become a musical staple every choir will want to
sing come Sunday morning service. Another standout track is "Jesus," a hip cheerful ode that simply celebrates Kirk's love of the Almighty.
Kirk Franklin has remained a favorite and is applauded for being innovative, relevant and authentic. As he achieved more success, Franklin has remained connected to his audience through music that speaks frankly to life's issues and struggles, while always offering a chord of hope and optimism.
His latest CD, "Hero" is RIAA-certified platinum and he has seven additional RIAA-certified gold, platinum and multi-platinum selling releases to date. The musical trendsetter has garnered 5 Grammy® Awards, 11 Doves, 34 Stellars, 4 NAACP Image Awards, two BET Award and a 2006 American Music Award.

Shirley Ceasar releases her 43rd album; "Still Sweeping Through the City"
By: J. Koni
Gospel singing legend, Shirley Caesar has released her 43rd album in her 40th year in music. The album is entitled, "Still Sweeping Through the City," a compilation of 12 of her favorite songs.
The album will feature the classic song, "Hold My Mule," that was released in 1987 and became a number one hit. It stayed on the Billboard Gospel Album Sales Chart for a 110 weeks.
"Hold My Mule was number one for 52 weeks on Billboard," she confesses. "Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could do that again with the new CD? We're just gonna wait and see what God is going to do."
Shirley revealed that she dusted off some of her rarer classics from the 1970s such as "Faded Rose" and a medley of "Peter Don't Be Afraid," "Nobody But You Lord" and "Teach Me Master." Also from that period is the heart-rending "How Many Will Be Remembered?"
From the 1980s, Caesar resurrected "Jesus I Love Calling Your Name", "He'll Do It Again," "Peace in the Midst of the Storm" and "Never."
The Mighty Clouds of Joy's raspy-voiced lead singer, Joe Ligon, rose from his sick bed for the recording of "Never". "Joe had a triple bypass," Caesar announced. "But God touched his body and he was able to sing with me." He traded notes with Caesar on a bit of "Teach Me Master," "God's Got it All Under Control" and "Sweeping Through the City."
The album was recorded last July at the 300-member Mt. Calvary Holy Church that Caesar co-pastors in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Meet Bronx-based gospel artiste Dunamis
By: Joan Wilson
Now here is a gospel singer who has truly seen and done it all and is now on fire for Jesus. Through his mistakes he is now imparting the words to others so that they can avoid the same pitfalls.
Neil Hall aka Dunamis is on a mission to reach the world with the transforming message of the Power of God.
Born in Bull Bay, St Andrew he left Jamaica at the age of 10 then got "shipped back" to Jamaica on a one way ticket by my single mom who was out of her elements with his street activities of robbing and possessing and selling guns.
After returning to Jamaica he attended Kingston Technical for three years.
Strange as it might sound inspite of his street life on Sundays he would be in church and in the summer at church camp. He actually made an attempt to serve Christ in 1993 when he accepted the Lord as his
Saviour.
That didn't last he backslid the same year and lived the life of the prodigal son with riotous living as he says.
"My crew and I use to throw big sound parties and running women."
Soon Dunamis started taking an inward look at his life and realized it wasn't as fulfilling as he thought. That's when he asked the Lord to give him another chance to go back to the States and he promised to dedicate his life to Him.
"I called my mom and she said yes I could come back and I kept my promise."
Since giving his life to Christ Dunamis says, "I am a new man and a new creation old things are passed away. I put God first in everything I do we send it up in Prayer. His words declare that he knows the plans he has for us plans to give us HOPE and a FUTURE but we have to seek him believing in our hearts."
The gospel artiste had encouraging words for young people and it's simple, "Give your life to Jesus Christ, when you do so your life will change for the better. Don't get me wrong you will still have struggles but the Lord will be with you every step of the way and trust me Christianity is not boring."
Since his trek into Christendom Dunamis has shared stage with Papa San who is also a brother and mentor to him, Stitchie, Shelly Thunder, The Grace Thrillers and Carlene Davis just to name a few.

Prodigal Son...From the dunghill to the top of the hill
Like is the case with many young Jamaican males, his grandmother was his guardian, but when she died he "broke out".
Calvin Whilby aka Prodigal Son was educated in the admonition of the Lord by his grandmother, and she insisted that attending church was a way of life for him. Young Calvin accepted Christ at age 5, and continued through to age 13.
That was the age at which his grandmother died, and from thereon things went downhill for him...Prodigal's became rebellious and developed a 'don't care' attitude. It was no wonder with that attitude he relocated to Rema in Kingston, one of Jamaica's toughest inner-cities. In no time he was involved in gang and gun violence.
As Calvin put it, "I found protection and family in the gang."
Interestingly, the gang was called the "Fatherless Crew". Fortunately, he developed a longing for his heavenly father. He became convinced that the Lord loved him, when he realized that many of his "ragamuffin" colleagues were dying by the gun, but, he was still
alive.
After recommitting his life to Christ in 1998, he adopted his name after the biblical prodigal son and decided to use the gift of music God had given him to reach out to others.
Things looked up for him when he met musical genius and producer, Danny Browne who became not only his producer, but mentor and friend.
Prodigal Son has developed, and is now accepted as one of Jamaica's most prolific Gospel artiste.
He has performed at sold out venues, before crowds as huge as 150,000, at events such as Antigua Governmental Celebrations (Caribbean), International Reggae Festival of Life (Chicago, USA) Fun in the Sun, Recharge, Sting (Jamaica), France World Cup Qualifier Match (Jamaica vs. Mexico) Air Jamaica sponsored UK Tour, Israel & New Breed Tour (Jacksonville, USA) and many other International events.
He has shared stages with renowned Gospel Artistes, Fred Hammond, Donnie McClurkin, CeCe Winans, Jackie McCullough, Tobi Mac, Mary Mary, Israel Houghton & New Breed, Martha Munizzi, Kirk Franklyn, Yolanda Adams and mainstream artistes such as: Shaggy, Junior Gong, Beenie Man, Bounti Killa, Destiny's Child, Jermaine Jackson, Maxi Priest, Regina Belle, Calypso Rose, Barrington Levy, Luciano, Jimmy Cliff and more.
Prodigal Son has gained the respect of both fans and critics and, is among the few Jamaican gospel artistes who are appreciated in both the Christian arena and mainstream/secular and as such was the only Gospel Artiste that appeared on the 2006 B Mobile 'No Violence' school tour in Jamaica.
He has received several mainstream awards including: Jamaica
Federation of Musicians, best new gospel artiste for 2001, the X-News Award, Artist of the Year 2001, Marlin Award for Best Dancehall Recording for 2004, U.S. Urban Gospel Award, Best Producer 2005, Urban Gospel Award Best Caribbean Artiste, and the Canadian Maja Award Album of the year 2006.
He has copped numerous number one (1) spots on charts like UK's United by 1, Love 101 FM Jamaica, Flow FM Canada, Mystic 98, Fort Lauderdale, Florida and UK's Soulcare. Prodigal was interviewed and featured on the US network CBS on the 700 club programme 'Turning
Point' where he shared his life changing testimony.
His debut album Radikal Prodigal produced by Danny Browne featured crossover hits I Wish, Woe and Radikal Style, all three songs were the first dancehall gospel songs to be played on mainstream radio in Jamaica such as RJR, Irie FM and Hot 102. His second album Still
Standing which was self-produced was voted best gospel album of 2005 by Love 101 and track #10, Journey, was voted song of the year. A second song Track # 5 Still Standing is nominated by the International Reggae & World Music Award as best gospel song.
Prodigal has been voted best dressed artiste by Buzz Magazine, made the top 10 list of the Caribbean's finest and is the first and only Gospel artiste to be signed by BMobile, a major telecommunication
conglomerate. And, he has landed another corporate endorsement deal with Partners & Financial Investments Ltd. He'll be the spokesperson for the next three (3) years.
Now an ordained pastor Prodigal Son recently launched his fourth album a double CD featuring the work of international artiste Micah Stampley, Junior Tucker and Richie Stephens.

OUTSTANDING GOSPEL MUSIC AWARD WINNING GROUP.
The group SHAZE emerges with their landmark release album called "Praise Him" live at The Open Bible Community Church, 2610 N.W. 119th Street, Miami. The release features song like: "Every Nation," "Praise Him," "Blessed" and "Show Him."
Christian/Reggae/R&B recording artistes – SHAZE, the Outstanding Gospel Music Award winning group, is also recipient of the 2007 Hopeton Lewis Caribbean Gospel Music Award for Best Singing Group of the year. They were nominated for two outstanding music awards: Top Gospel Singing Group of the year and Top Gospel Song of the Year .
SHAZE brings a unique sound to the music industry with their Jamaican background. Under the spiritual influence of God, they spread the word through music. The uniqueness of their style draws many people to them. With many years of experience under his belt, producer and songwriter, Maurice "Brian" Gregory has influenced the group towards the success of their album. The album was inspired by the need to praise God regardless of life's circumstances.
SHAZE is the first female group under the label Mastrak Productions. They have been blessed with songs such as "Every Nation"; a song that is a cliché of what Jesus meant when he said the gospel must be preached as a witness to every kingdom of every nation. "Praise Him" is another heart-impacting phenomenon that will bring the heart of people close to God. The way in which this song was done is like meeting the people where they are and taking them to where you want them to be.
Each song on the album comes with one aim - to lift up the name of Jesus and to reach every heart and soul in every nation.

Kareem counteracts negative forces with love
By: Joseph Cunningham
Mavado and other entertainers who glorify gangster lifestyles are those who Kareem vows to counteract!
He is a Gospel singer who believes that "word power" should not be discredited, and so he says the messages being delivered by "gangster artistes" have been unleashing the wrong spirit on the Jamaican society.
"I want to be an agent of change through my music, promoting love, peace and joy," he said.
Kareem is convinced that music which educates is the way to go, revealing that as a younger man he admired the gangster image as well. The 21 year-old said his involvement in the music world began from as early as age 8, when he would deliver solo performances in church, and at that same age his older brother exposed him to drumming.
August Town, the Jamaican community where Kareem lives is plagued by sporadic outbursts of violence and it is no surprise that his opinion about "message" is as it is! He says he has seeing his community torn apart by poverty and its most infamous side effect, violence.
Out of a desire to see his community and the wider society become a better place, he recorded "I will Give You Love Tonight." "That song was an effort to comfort the poor and needy through my music,' he confirmed.
Beresford Hammond, Mahailia Jackson and Michael Bolton are singers who appealed to Kareem's musical taste buds as a child and they have inspired him since. Often compared to fellow young singing sensation Wayne Marshall, Kareem has own blend of style as well as songs and he is very versatile.
"I want to uphold Gospel music because when Christ left this earth he gave us a mandate to go throughout the earth, on the by-ways and the edges, teaching love, peace, long suffering, and encouraging everyone to love their neighbour as themselves," Kareem said.
Since February of this year he linked with Aramac Entertainment Agency and they have been releasing his music. As a former lead singer with the world renown Katalyst Crew, it was relatively easy for Aramac to promote his music, because Kareem was already a recognizable face and voice.
Songs popularly known from the singer are "It Nuh Easy," "Lift Up My Hands to the Father" and the very hip "Wave Your Hands."
His latest single titled, "Why" has been released recently along with a video. The song underlines some of the challenges faced by law-abiding citizens in the Jamaican inner-city. Fun in the Sun, Genesis and many other major concerts have been blessed with his talent. To see Kareem in full flight real soon, make a visit to Integration Thursday, this Thursday at the University of the West Indies, Mona.

Dreadlocked singer worships Jesus
By: Joseph Cunningham
Ziggy Soul sports dreadlocks, the main symbol of Rastafarianism, but he is a devoted Christian. What does he mean by devoted? He does not worship the Rastafarian god, but praises Jesus.
His behavioural pattern was recognized by the Jamaican society as very strange, and this resulted in various unpleasant experiences . It is arguable that Jamaica is one of the most vibrant Rastafarian communities in the world, and so when Ziggy Soul sought to settle in a Christian place of worship, he was met with fierce resistance.
"During the period when I was seeking a place of worship, there were occasions when I was attacked physically, because of my locks. Some people told me they did not want me in their church," he said.
While he acknowledged that a deadlocked person claiming to be a Christian would not have been readily accepted by Jamaicans, he was and is still adamant that the way he looks does not determine who he is.
All these negatives were ongoing while Ziggy was walking the walk and talking the Christian talk. He had established a non-profit organization in Trench Town, which served the academic and social needs of the community. "I was giving of my time as a form of worship." Undoubtedly the neglect he had been receiving from some church organizations had insulted his sincerity.
Fortunately for Ziggy, he met Pastor David Keane from Church on the Rock, who is widely known for his radical approach to the pastoral ministry. "I was living in Trench Town and Pastor Keane and his team of Evangelists came to the community to minister. Somehow he heard of my singing ability and asked for me. We met and he invited me to church."
Ziggy recalls being enrolled in Sunday School where he learned about Jesus deeply. His Gospel music career then began when famed Gospel music producer Tommy Cowan heard him singing in Sunday school. International recording artiste Carlene Davis also happened to have been in the audience, he said. They invited Ziggy to sign to their record label, "Glory Music".
The record deal took Ziggy to the forefront of Jamaican gospel music quickly, however, his new found fame was accompanied by controversy, this time with greater intensity as a public figure. "Acceptance from music patrons took a little while because they seemed uncertain what to believe about my stance regarding my locks." Nevertheless, he persevered, and today he has been widely accepted as a true Christian, especially after the release of the hit song "Sing It Out Loud". The song cemented his acceptance; the most famous line from it declaring that "Jesus Christ is King of Kings".He has since delivered the album titled, "Born Again", which featured the song "Sing It Out Loud".
It has been four years since the release of Born Again, and he is back with "Genesis", an album which is loaded with hot tracks, including "Jesus Is Trench Town", "Rescue Me", "Proverbs" and "Tell Me Who". It was produced by Tommy Cowan and features tracks with a number of his friends. My review is that this album is deep, soulful and Jamaican.

“Best Friend” by JAI is a reggae gospel album in all its glory
The brand new release of the debut gospel album "Best Friend" by JAI a.k.a. Wayne Buchanan firmly keeps with the tradition of what gospel music is all about - vibrant, rhythmic and soulful. "Best Friend" conveys a sound that is upbeat with a holy feeling that transcends flavors and styles, from traditional reggae to dancehall rhythms plus R&B and Hip Hop sounds.
On first listening, a number of tracks from this 15 set collection jump out at you, such as the upbeat, "Shout Jah" wherein JAI sings soulful praises to Jesus. On "All I Need" he rides a forceful dancehall rhythm while on "Healing," "Show Some Love" and "Spend My Always" which features Tina James with some tuff traditional reggae rhythm, JAI's vocalizing is reminiscent of reggae's super group Morgan Heritage. R&B and Hip Hop presence are strong on "Love" the title track, "They Don't Know" and the combination "Coming Soon" witch features Dwayne Jackson.
JAI is an acronym for JESUS AND I, an appropriate name for this Christian artist who, from as early as 12 years old had been saved and started singing in the church. At age 15 he became the lead singer for the group 'Total Praise.' Continuing his upward mobility, JAI became a member of the established band 'C Sharp.' Not withstanding those experiences, it was the release of his hit single, "Cant Take My Lord," released on Johnnie Clarke's Marjohnmuzik label that signaled the rise of this glittering star.
Thereafter JAI joined the revolutionary gospel reggae band Katalys Crew as the lead vocalist along with DJ Radic, releasing the album "Open Your Eyes. He simultaneously performed with Nadine Blair’s Perpetual Praise Team in their inspirational praise and worship ministry. There are a number of other collaborative projects that he has recorded for including the "Yow 2003" album.
JAI's musical mission is to minister to the masses with reality lyrics filled with spiritual vibes. He has toured the Caribbean and performed in Canada in his endeavor to spread the gospel of Jesus around the globe. He said "I am known as a solo artist now. But it is all about JESUS AND I; he is my Best Friend."
JAI is Produced by: Image Records, Marketed by: Caribbean Gospel Ministries USA, Distributed By: Finatic Records.

Truly Blessed is Mystery Bless
By: Joseph Cunningham
'Poor people fed up to how the system sheg-up, dem issue gun fi yuh pickney buss!' These are words from a song recorded by one of the most decorated artistes in Jamaica's secular music history, Bounty Killer.
The song examines a few of the challenges faced by youths in Jamaican inner cities.
Mystery Bless is a Gospel artiste who lived a life that epitomizes the Jamaican inner-city experience. He was christened Roger Linton and it is arguable that the line of the christening prayer, which says, " I now pronounce him a well blessed child," has certainly enforced a divine intervention in his life.
He grew up and still lives in Tavern, Papine. One of four sons overseen by his single mother; today he is one of two brothers still enjoying the privilege of "state freedom." His eldest brother was notorious in crime and is now deceased, while another who followed the notorious trail, is currently behind bars.
"Before accepting Christ I was fond of the thug lifestyle too. Lots of girls, parties and the guns were always visible to me," Mystery Bless recalls. He was also a Dancehall artiste, and admitted being influenced by Bounty Killer's music.
The change in his lifestyle began through his mother's insistence that he attend Sunday school. He got baptized at age 11 but revealed that he still continued in his "retched" ways. Well, "The lord had ordained my salvation," is what he strongly believes, adding that he got to a stage in his life when he made up his mind to "live right."
With the moral support of elder brothers at the Church of Jesus Christ United Faith Apostolic, he has progressed and now is an ordained minister, the youngest in his church assembly at age 21. One of his greatest spiritual gifts is preaching, which is combined with his now renowned dynamic live performances. Mystery Bless came to prominence when he upstaged the headline act at a concert in Jamaica. He recalls, "When the show promoter realized what was happening, he ordered that my set be cut short."
At this point he is not signed to a major record label, but said that he is not worried as he is waiting on the lord to provide the right deal. He can be seen at gospel concerts with the likes of DJ Nicholas, evidence that the leading Gospel artistes have recognized his enormous talents. He revealed that his manager does not have to be a Christian, neither does the producer have to be; "The message must be powerful so as long as there is mutual respect I'm willing to work."
Look out for Mystery Bless; you will witness his transformation.

Craig C makes his Debut performance
Craig C, christened Craig Chambers, was born in 1986 in the lively community of Portmore, where his Grandmother traditionally hosted musical events at her home on weekends, stimulating his love for music.
Inspired by Professor Nuts and Bob Marley, Craig C's fascination for music increased to the point where he developed his own style, becoming a Gospel Reggae DJ at age14. Influenced by the contagious dancehall culture, Craig indulged in lyrical clashes in the class room. "I would adjust secular rhymes and rhythms in order to provide a positive gospel message that had everyone’s interest at heart," he explained.
A past student of Ardene High, Craig has completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management Studies at the University of West Indies, Mona campus. Craig's national prominence started while attending a Youth Camp, where he wrote and performed an original song for the first time entitled, The Lords Army. "My friends were surprised by my hidden talent, and the news began to circulate that I was a performer," he revealed. One month later Craig was requested to perform at a church event, where another original entitled, Seek Him And Wait, was his choice. This performance gave Craig huge exposure, opening up the musical doors.
Soon after he recorded his first song entitled, Spiritual Baretta for popular producer Dale Virgo also known as, 'Dizzle'. Craig’s recognition grew and soon he recorded Seek Him And Wait, which led to his first major concert appearance alongside the likes of Gospel icon Carlene Davis. Today he is viewed as a developing sensation in Jamaican music, and has confidently sustained his versatility as a gospel reggae DJ. "My mission is to use my musical talent to influence persons to a place of moral consciousness," Craig said, explaining that this aim of his is projected in the holy bible in Palms 100; Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, All ye lands, Serve the Lord with gladness, come before his presence with singing.
At this point he is in the stables of Radical Communications, a camp of artistes that include leading Gospel artiste Prodigal. They hosted the 'explosion annual' Recharge, held recently at the Police Officers Club in St. Andrew, Jamaica. This is one event is one featuring Gospel artistes that draws massive crowds, and Craig was a headline performer.
In tandem with top-flight producer Danny Browne, he is putting the final touches on his debut album. The album will have 15 tracks voiced on Reggae, Dancehall, Hip Hop and R&B rhythms.
Gospel music with secular beats has and continues to create controversy especially in a Jamaican society where Christians like to do it 'the good old fashion way.' However, Craig is confident that just how America has come to appreciate and respect the music and views of Kirk Franklyn and others, Gospel music with Dancehall infused beats will find a well recognized and sable place in Jamaican culture. "I am all for versatility, and this has to be the approach that will take this genre to that higher level," he asserted.
Craig recently released his latest singles, End Times and You, done in collaboration with the singer, Murphy, for which a video will be produced. Further, he will continue recording consistently until he leaves the island for New York in August for performances.

Carlene Davis - Redeemed and healed from cancer to Christ
Standing in the ashes of a life that's been torn
Burned of all the things I held onto
Till the only thing I have left
Is the solid rock of you
"Standing In The Ashes"
In the midst of my affliction
I could have died without redemption
But through the power of the most High
I confess my sins and received Salvation
"Redeemed"
This excerpt from Carlene Davis's song "Standing In The Ashes" from her third gospel album, Redeemed is a synopsis of the journey that this now ordained minister of the gospel has taken.
![]()
Sharing a similar story to Saul whose life was radically changed while on that road to Damascus, Carlene through her songs speaks of the redemptive power of God in her life.
One of Jamaica's foremost and consistent female singer/songwriter, a household name from the eighties, Carlene Davis is known for such songs as "Like Old Friends Do", "It Must Be Love", "Winnie Mandela", and the social commentary "Santa Claus Do You Ever Come To The Ghetto?" just to name a few.
She has won over 30 awards including and received the 2000 and 2001 Jamaican Federation of Musicians Awards for her gospel albums "Vessel" and "Redeemed" respectively. Also, the Marlin Award for Top Gospel Vocalist and Martin's International Award from Chicago.
Despite all this however, her biggest achievement as she puts it, was accepting Christ as her personal Saviour and being able to prove his promises true. Having been afflicted and delivered from cancer has taught her to lean on God as the source of her strength.
This all happened in the summer of 1996 while she was visiting her husband Tommy Cowan in California. "He was on tour and we took time out to be together, away from the hectic life of the music industry. During this time out my husband discovered a lump in my left breast. As soon as we returned to Jamaica, I visited my doctor and he sent me to do a series of tests. The tests didn't look good and after I visited a specialist and he ran additional tests; days later in early October it was confirmed to be malignant. My husband took charge right away, he tried to keep me away from the details of what was happening to me, knowing that I was one of those persons who tried to eat right, exercise and stay healthy. He spoke to the doctor regarding all the details of the operation. To cut a long story short when the result was confirmed, my husband asked the doctor to call him, not me. He tried so hard to shield me from the news, even though he was feeling it more than me. Leading up to the final results, I spent a lot of time praying and seeking God.
"Before all of this I had led a decent life, my recording career was something I was proud of, I was happy with my accomplishments, having had several number one records touring Japan, USA etc., things were alright. Tommy, the children and I were doing really well. We were busy running a booking and management company, Talent Corporation, where we spent most of our time trying to make the best of a sometimes bad situation. We were responsible for a number of young, up coming artistes and some veterans while running our own careers (my husband is a singer, songwriter, producer/promoter) and taking care of family all at the same time. Within a four - year period, my husband and I lost 6 family members: Tommy's father, 2 brothers and his ex-wife (the latter died violently), my father and an aunt, two people I was very close to.
"This experience took me through a lot of soul searching. I realised that the Lord had his hand upon me all my life, and I'd spent all my life up to that point running away from Him, instead of to him. It was very clear. During this time the Lord reminded me of my youth, going to church and Sunday school. My week was never right if I missed church, that's how sweet God meant to me as a youth. I had committed my life to God when I was a child growing up in a little district called Colonel's Ridge, Clarendon, Jamaica at the Mount Carmel Presbyterian Church.
Carlene Davis – Testimony Cont'd.
I migrated to England as a young student with my other siblings (3 brothers and one sister) to join my parents. I finished my
education there and then went on to live in Canada before returning to Jamaica.
"Again, the Lord reminded me of my years in England when he called me and again I turned away. When I returned to Jamaica it was the same experience. I even went as far as recording a gospel album (my first gospel album) "Jesus Is Only A Prayer Away". Again I drifted. So when I found myself in this situation, there was no doubt in my mind that God was truly at work in my life. I was, how should I put it, "Always one foot in and one foot out". Just like everything else, God made a way for me out of nowhere. He could have prevented the cancer. I am convinced that the Lord led me to this path for me to make a choice, a take it or leave it situation. My church, pastors, family and friends were all praying for the family. They laid hands on me and anointed me. I do remember crying during that session. I remember a week before the operation I prayed this prayer... "Lord I am through with running away from you, take me as I am and use me as your vessel".
"From that moment I felt a peace; all the concerns about the operation was not so important any more, I just wanted to go to church and spend more time in the word. I remember crying again during that particular prayer of repentance. I now realise it was truly the Lord washing, cleansing, forgiving and healing me. Thus the song, "Redeemed"... forgive me Lord for all that I have done, deliver me Lord, take me as I am, and with your grace I'm on my bended knees, your humble servant, Oh Master hear my plea.
"The days spent in the hospital, I was so at peace, even my doctors were amazed, they removed all that had to be removed. The healing process was very short. My doctors kept saying they wished all their patients were like me. I received chemotherapy and yes I was concerned about all the stuff attached to chemo treatment, but I prayed and got as much info about it. Praise be to God I didn't lose any hair, did not get sick, I stayed on a special diet which included juicing carrots and other vegetables and this is still a part of my diet.
"I would have my treatment and go straight to rehearsals, make all the necessary trips that I was committed to, fulfill my general office responsibilities and only my close friends really knew what I was going through. I know God gave me the courage not to walk in the condition I found myself in, but to look to whom my hope lies, and believe in the evidence of things not seen. God kept his hand on me, shielded me from all that and more, put a new song in my heart, He taught me to sing... walk the walk and talk the talk, that Jesus Christ is here to guide me, set me free at Calvary, oh yes he died for you and me." ("Walk The Walk" from the album, 'Vessel').
I thank the Lord..." Who redeems your life from the pit and corruption; who beautifies, dignifies and crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercy." (Psalm 103:4-Amp. Bible). www.carlenedavis.net

OFMB Presents Reggae For Christ wins Top Caribbean Gospel Music Award
By: Janice Dayle
Tennyison Walters of OFMB Records said, "It is about Our Father's Music Business, not our earthly, but our Heavenly Father," as he explained the acronym, OFMB. The company, Our Father's Music Business Record Company Inc., was founded by husband and wife Tennyson and Karlene Walters ten years ago with a focus on producing songs of worship and praise. Today, OFMB represents and produces music for an impressive roster of artists.
On June 2, 2007 OFMB did Their Father proud by winning The Caribbean Gospel Music Award (CGMA), for Top Album of The Year.
OFMB Presents: Reggae For Christ Volume 1, won the 2007 CGMA at a ceremony held in New York. Richard Greene Junior High School was buzzing with excitement on CGMA night, as were all the singers and musicians featured on this fifth OFMB Records release, that actually received four nominations for the CGMAs this year.
![]()
Nominations were for Top Gospel CD or Group Caribbean USA: Reggae For Christ - Various Artists, Top Original Caribbean Gospel International Song: Yeah Man No Problem - Judy Mowatt and Top Caribbean Gospel Song International for title song: Reggae For Christ - Andrew Lawrence.
Founded seven years ago by the legendary Hopeton Lewis, the Caribbean Gospel Music Association hosted a week long celebration this year, that started with a family health forum on May 30th and 31st. On June 1st, a Praise and Worship gathering was held in Queens, followed by the June 2nd Awards Show. The festivities culminated on June 3rd with workshops and a formal banquet, hosted by Marie Garth.
"Christ said his purpose was to spread good news to the broken hearted, the downtrodden, to people who are in need of the great physician," Walters said, in expressing the motivation behind OFMB. "So the music that we try to present follows our motto that says, We Present Music That Speaks To The Soul and Enlightens Mankind," he expounded.
In describing further the meaning and purpose of OFMB, Walters said, "When Christ's mother was looking for him, and someone said - your parents are looking for you - he said - tell them I am about my Father's business."
That business of setting out to win more and more souls has seen OFMB artists travel throughout the world, spreading their edifying messages. They performed in China to sold out audiences on three separate tours. Walters attributes their success to OFMB's stance of holding fast to prayer and gearing everything towards ministry. "We interface and partner with many non - profit and charitable organizations, like Judy Mowatt's project in the District of Bath, St. Thomas, Jamaica, and others in South Africa and China.
With a new CD coming out in July 2007, OFMB is wasting no time in unveiling their wealth of tracks that feature sound musicianship, solid lyrics and strong deliveries - to the world. Entitled, Love Tree Inn, this much anticipated CD will include artists like Ritchie Stephens and Christopher Bentley from Inner Circle. Walters says this one continues in the same lyrical vein as Reggae For Christ, as it addresses many crucial societal issues. "For example, one song says - If you live by the sword you will die by the sword," Walters said.
Check for the Award winning, chart topping, Reggae For Christ CD at VP locations worldwide or at www.ofmb.com.

Gospel artiste DJ Nicholas - he saw fire falling from the heavens
In his early years, he was known as 'nameless' and produced dub plates for sound systems such as 'Nemesis and 'Flawless.' During this period, he began searching for his true identity. One night, he had a dream in which he saw fire falling from the heavens. In his dream, there was a Rastafarian in his house saying to him that he must know himself. As a result, he sought refuge in the Rastafarian faith believing that Selassie was God and became totally immersed in the Religion.
Knowing that he was raised in a Christian home, he prayed for God's guidance because he was confused about the path he was taking. While studying the bible intensely, he stumbled on Acts 4:12 which reads,"...There is no other name under Heaven given among men by which we must be saved." This passage made him realize that Jesus Christ is the only way. Praises be to God, he received the word with thanksgiving. As a result, he shaved his hair and turned fully to the Bible for guidance and inspiration. He made the bold step of attending a church crusade at the New Life Assembly of God, Constant Spring Road. There, he got saved and baptized.
With the passion of knowing Christ came, another passion…the passion of gospel music. He pursued his dreams of doing God's music by approaching Tommy Cowan who recorded his first single 'Barrier'. Nicholas continued to produce songs such as "Pop off the Word" and collaborated with Kerron Ennis on "Holy Ghost Church." He has worked on projects for Bless a.k.a. Prodigal Son, Chevelle Franklyn, Robert & Jeneve Bailey and Danny Browne. Also, he has ministered in Canada, USA, London England and several small Islands, shared stage with Papa San, CeCe Winans and has opened a stage for Kirk Franklin in ST Maarten.
Achievements in 2006
Nicholas is fresh from winning the Artist of the Year Award and the New Artist of the Year Award at the recently held Maja Awards 2006 in Kingston Jamaica; he was also one of the contenders for this year's big prize, Album of the Year for his debut project "On the Shout." DJ Nicholas was tied for the top nomination spot for this year's Caribbean Gospel Music Marlin Awards 2006 receiving a whopping twelve (12) nominations, where he also won New Artist of the Year and Duo of the Year for Holy Ghost Church. He is not just known as DJ Nicholas but as Minister DJ Nicholas, given the title by two ministers being witnessed by thousands of persons and media. He is DJ Nicholas on the shout!!!...And there's no doubt.
Ministry Statement: To minister the undiluted word of God uncompromisingly through the language of the Caribbean music in a most Professional way to the furtherance of God's Kingdom.

Gospel artiste Moses takes refuge in Jesus Christ

Kasim "Moses" Grant was born on November 29, 1980 to parents Andrea McLauren and Michael Grant. He grew up in the violent community called Rema Trench Town in the city of Kingston. Moses lost his father at a tender age. His father was one of the top gun men in the community who was killed by police in a shoot out. Moses life was not a bed of roses. His daily needs were hard to come by as his single parent mother fought to overcome poverty to satisfy her children. He grew up with the influence of Rastafarian faith around him, gang violence and the belief that there was no other way to rise above the odds.
Over greed of territory, war broke out with his community and several other communities around him. After three (3) years of ongoing violence and seeing some of his closest friends and neighbours being shot and killed, he felt that his life was in jeopardy, so he got involved in gang violence to protect himself and the people who were close to him. After shooting at men from the opposite side and shooting at the police when necessary sadness rains on the night of May 3, 1997 after Moses went to sleep about after Two (2) in the morning. His door was kicked off by gunmen from the opposite side of the community and was shot three (3) times. One bullet hit him in his head one in his stomach and one in his butt. He spent two weeks in the hospital, surviving a death that was sure. Moses knew then God had a calling on his life.
Upon leaving he sought refuge at a church retreat where he planned to recover. Just after a few days there, he was convicted by the Holy Spirit to take refuge in Jesus Christ. Heeding this call from God, Moses spent two years in dedicated Bible Study before pursuing his lifelong desire to sing. He linked up with one of his school days brethren Mr. Gallimore to form the group "The K G's". Their first recording was a duet with gospel singer Ziggy Soul on his debut album "Born Again". They then linked up with Danny Brownie of Main Street Music and in 1999 scored big with their duet "Big Him Up" on the number one selling "Yow Reggae Gospel, Chapter 1". Moses later went solo with songs like "Pray", "Man A Christian", "The Big Man", "Adore Him" and "War" on the "Yow" series, which helped to make him a household name among his Christian peers.
Moses, a natural evangelist, has his fixed on preaching. While he continues to study the bible, he also minister in the inner city communities across Jamaica. His ministry of God's words put to song has touched many lives. He has also ministered on a number of major gospel stage shows across Jamaica including "Fun in the Son", "Teen Summit", "Genesis", "Gospel in Motion", "Recharge" and "Transformation Jamaica" and many others.

Gospel artiste Judy Mowatt - "To whom much is given much is required,"
Although the music business has seen hundreds of gifted female artists, there have been but a handful who compose their own music. JUDY MOWATT, who for years was a key member of BOB MARLEY'S I-THREES, is one of those rare women who control their artistic destiny. As a result, she has achieved an impressive chain of accomplishments. JUDY became the first female singer nominated for a GRAMMY in the category of reggae music when her 'WORKING WONDERS' LP was nominated in 1985. She was the first female reggae artist to appear on LATE NIGHT WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, when she made her solo debut that same year. Her LP 'BLACK WOMAN,' is considered by many critics to be the greatest reggae LP done by a female artiste, and it was the first reggae LP recorded by a woman acting as her own producer.
Being committed to meaningful lyrics, JUDY became a renowned advocate for women's issues, spiritual inspiration and African liberation. The song, 'LOVE - IS OVERDUE,' that is featured on her album, made her the first female reggae singer to score a major American popular hit. With her magnificent voice, fertile composing talent and stunning beauty, JUDY has all the ingredients necessary to continue taking her trend - setting music even further into the international arena.
Born some 45 years ago in Industry Village - Gordon Town, St. Andrew, Jamaica, JUDY came from very humble beginnings. Although her family was so poor, that they were unable to afford a radio, no-one in the household ever went hungry. As a child, singing came as naturally to her as breathing and she was always 'singled-out' for solo spots with church choirs. While attending Holy Trinity and Kingston Commercial Schools, JUDY became a member of a dance troupe, which toured Jamaica and the Caribbean. Her aspiration was to become a registered nurse, but by divine purpose, that was not to be. She later discovered that GOD'S plan was for her to nurture and restore healing to the hearts and souls of mankind through her music. Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Curtis Mayfield, Dionne Warwick, Bob Marley, Marcia Griffiths, The Staple Singers and The Soulettes were the musicians who inspired her most.
A coincidental meeting in 1967, with two teenage girls who were once members of her dance troupe, led to the formation of the singing group called, THE GAYLETTES.
These amazing songbirds rapidly became one of the most popular singing groups in Jamaica, after being asked to sing backing tracks for Federal Records. The Group later recorded several hits on the Federal Records Label.
Although contractual snags forced JUDY to record under other names, by the early seventies, she launched a solo career, singing both soul ballads and reggae tunes. A number of hits followed, including 'I SHALL SING' which was later covered by ART GARFUNKEL, 'WAY OVER YONDER' and 'EMERGENCY CALL.' She then teamed up with Rita Marley and Marcia Griffiths to form the I-THREES, who became BOB MARLEY'S backing vocalists when the original WAILERS - PETER TOSH and BUNNY WAILER left the group in 1974. Their soaring harmonies, majestic costumes and dance movements, choreographed by JUDY, were highlights of BOB MARLEY concerts, as they accompanied him on his historic global odysseys.
Meanwhile, JUDY had her biggest solo hit with 'MELLOW MOOD,' a BOB MARLEY composition, that became the title track on her first solo LP in 1975. Constant touring with BOB MARLEY prevented JUDY from concentrating on her solo career. It was not until 1978 that the landmark second LP, 'BLACK WOMAN,' was released. Produced by JUDY and FREDDIE MCGREGOR, the record features several moving compositions such as 'JOSEPH' - a soulful ballad and tribute to BOB MARLEY, 'SISTERS CHANT,' 'STRENGTH TO GO THROUGH' and the title track 'BLACK WOMAN,' celebrating the strength and dignity of black women. This LP still remains one of the greatest reggae albums ever recoded and produced by a woman. Subsequently, the albums expanded her musical direction, as she focused on her life as a Rastafarian Woman and the special concerns of women. Her third LP, 'ONLY A WOMAN,' confirmed her position as a spokesperson for women’s issues. It features the excellent tracks like title track, 'ONLY A WOMAN' and 'I'M NOT MECHANICAL.' The Almighty God tremendously blessed JUDY .
"To whom much is given much is required," that is what JUDY believes, so she sees her God given duty as giving back to the society that nurtured her. In 1994, JUDY spearheaded an organization called CONCERNED WOMEN IN ACTION, primarily to assist in acquiring a well needed generator for The Fort Augusta Correctional Center For Women. This she accomplished, with aid from the BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION who co-sponsored the staging of several fund raising concerts both in Jamaica and in the United States. These actions increased awareness of the needs at this center. JUDY is still constantly involved in organizing and planning many charitable events for various institutions. Although she was a devoted Rastafarian for twenty-two years, desiring to please God all the way, JUDY is now of the Christian faith.

Chevelle Franklyn - 'I can't do this anymore...
Chevelle Franklyn is without doubt one of the most outstanding Ministers of Music to have arrived on the gospel music scene over the past seven years. Her energy as a performer, insight as a songwriter/producer, vocal capacity as a singer, and her anointing as a worshiper has ensured her success as a leading, international, multiple award-winning Psalmist. Chevelle recorded her first work 'Here I Am' at the tender age of 14. Nurtured by some of the top names among Jamaica's music producers, Chevelle soon marked out a distinctive territory in Jamaica's dancehall culture scene.
Her future took a rosy turn and she recorded smash hits Nice and Naughty followed by No Pushover in 1992. But despite the great success, there remained a gaping hole in her soul. In 1998, during a concert, Chevelle, tired of the empty way of life and hopelessness, suddenly declared on stage a change of direction in her career and lifestyle, she decided to become a Christian. As a symbol of her signature to this new change, she sang Kirk Franklin's song 'Silver and Gold' on stage. She said: 'I did not hear a message or anything, but I felt the calling of God.
I just broke down on the stage and said, 'I can't do this anymore... I knew there was something better out there'. It was then that Chevelle gave her life to the Lord ending all her secular contractual agreements, walking away from her biggest international hit song Dancehall Queen'. Better certainly did come and since that change, Chevelle has been combining her new expression with the energetic lyrical style that had made her a great success. This success includes
the hit collaboration in the year 2000 with Papa San on his award-winning album, 'Victory', led to a Marlin Award for her vocal appearance on the track 'Touch from you'.
Her first gospel album 'Joy' stirred up an international storm when it was released in 2001, and led to a tour around the world. 'Joy', led to 12 nominations in the Sixth Annual Caribbean Gospel Music Marlin Awards, in 2002. Chevelle walked away with awards in five categories: Outstanding New Artist of the Year, Adapted Recording of the Year, for 'Firm Foundation' Female Reggae Recording of the Year, for 'Magnify His Name' Contemporary Female Vocal Performance of the Year, for 'Joy' and Album of the Year, also for Joy. Chevelle fellowships at Swallowfield Chapels - Pastor David Henry, when in Jamaica and when in the UK her Spiritual covering is Bishop John Francis of Ruach Ministries, London also church of her spiritual mother Pastor Enid Stewart.
Chevelle has seen God use the ministry to empower and equipped her for Music Ministry. Chevelle produced her New gospel album, called HIS WAY on her very own Label called N.O.W Records (No Other Way). This album has followed in the footsteps of Joy's runaway success. Chevelle Franklyn has shared the stage with the following Ministers Donnie Mc Clurkin, Kirk Franklin, Kurt Carr, Javen, Stephen Hurd, Michael W. Smith and Many more....

A moment with gospel artiste Stitchie
How do you know if the Spirit is Real?
I've always heard the story of the little boy who asked the same question. His mother asked if he could feel, or touch his tooth ache
. The boy replied by saying no, yet it hurts and I know it's there. The mother concluded that the spirit is similar, you can't see it but you know it's there.
Power of Love
God's grace teaches us how to live righteously - (Titus 2:11-12)
"For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should
live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.
God's Grace
God's grace is the most perfect example of love, unselfishness, and compassion. Never has there been anyone more perfectly justified
in delivering... well...justice. And, we are equal dissevering of that justice. And the justice that we deserve is death. Yet, God
offers us life. He offers us life eternal in Heaven. So, if you are looking for someone to model your life after, it's Jesus.
He
offered his very life so that you and I would not receive our just punishment. Instead, he was punish in our place. That's why people say, "What would
Jesus do? - Studying his life gives us insight into how we should live.

Gospel artiste Papa San is back - kicking it harder than ever for christ
It's often been said that music is the universal language. And, if that's so, no one speaks it better than Papa San. He opens his latest release, the astonishing, compelling, arresting Real & Personal, with a question that almost teases the listener to try and answer it. "Is it rock?/Is it roll?/Is it reggae?" Papa San asks, as machine-gun volley of percussion, crunching metal guitars and synths pound into play on the sizzling "More Life."
And, of course, the answer is simply, "Yes! All of the above." But the trip has only begun. It would be more accurate to just say it’s international, Jamaican, "new-school" Dancehall superstar, Papa San: back, bold, and in your face like never before. With a sound completely his own-and constantly evolving-Papa San stretches Gospel to places only he could take it.
"Dancehall" music is a highly rhythmic and rapped spin on the traditional melodic reggae groove of masters like Bob Marley, and Papa San was pivotal in birthing it on the world music scene some twenty years ago. Today, he still tips his hat to the past, and reveres his forebears-from Marley to Jimmy Cliff, and Toots & the Maytals-but Papa San has long since moved on-even since his last, award-winning smash project, God n i.
"You can't sit still, "he says. "Sure, this is still Dancehall, but it's new-school. It's some things that are familiar, and some that are brand new. It's what the Lord gives me, and what comes out of my head and my heart. And I let it take me wherever it does. There are no boundaries-to God, or to music."
In 1997, Papa San, a long-established king of Dancehall and World music, had what he describes as a supernatural visitation, and committed his life to Jesus Christ. The content of his songs changed to convey his newfound faith in the Gospel, but the mighty grooves, unforgettable hooks and mile-a-minute words and rhymes continued to soar, pour and roar forth. You can't have a culmination on a journey that never ends-and make no mistake, after 20 years and almost as many albums, Papa San has not once even slowed down-but Real & Personal is definitely the most dramatic, captivating, and downright thrill-a-minute ride in his long and preeminent career.
The album's 11 new Papa San originals each take the listener to a place of its own, and when everything stands out so distinctly, it's impossible to list any one or two stand outs. Still, if get through just "More Life" alone, and are less than dazzled and devastated, you might want to head for the nearest ER and make sure you've still living. As Papa San and a pile-driving rhythm section pound home the message of eternal life through Christ, a soulful-even sweet-female vocal ensemble moves in, above, around and through it all with a classic, too-cool and catchy, melodic chorus.
Yes, Papa San is back indeed, and kicking it harder than ever for Christ. At the speed of light, Papa San turns the whole groove around, with the other-worldly beauty of "For You Lord," as his singers float in on a gorgeous cloud of melody, and Papa San answers with a slow, penetrating rap, setting up a dialogue with the singers that continues until the two merge into one, in one of the freshest, most fearless expressions of simple and outright praises to the Almighty imaginable.
Anyone who's ever wondered about the roots of modern-day rap and hip-hop need look no further than the classic Dancehall jam, "Good to Me," as Papa San spins lightening-fast words, bone-crunching rhythm, and constantly recurring flashes of unforgettable melody into a web of worship that is nothing less than transcendent.
Having had his first smash while still just a teenager in the mid-'80s, Papa San's phenomenal, ongoing reign on international music charts earned him the nickname "Marathon Man," as it was not uncommon for him to simultaneously hold down several positions in the Top 10 at any given time, as well as to log runs at No.1 that still no reggae or Dancehall artist to date has surpassed. In 1994 he filled dance floors around the world with "The Programme," which also hit the top of the Billboard dance chart. Smash hits like "I Will Survive," "Legal Rights," "Strange" and "Maddy Maddy Cry," among many others, brought Papa San a huge audience in all the Caribbean Islands and around the world in Japan, Europe, Africa, the U.S. and more throughout the '80s and '90s.
In fact, before giving his life to the Lord and being baptized in the faith in 1997, Papa San was a popular figure in American rap circles, being credited as a pioneer by a host of rap superstars. Later connecting with fans of American hip-hop, Papa San landed numerous videos in heavy rotation on MTV. More recently, he has made guest appearances and shared stages with Gospel titans the likes of Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, Trin-t-ee 5:7, Donnie McClurkin, Hezekiah Walker, and BeBe & CeCe Winans.
Raised in Spanish Town, just outside of Jamaica's capital, Kingston, Papa San grew up in an environment where hard work and grinding poverty was the daily norm. But fervent revelry ruled the weekends. Spearheaded by any neighborhood resident with charisma and a potent enough sound system, music, dancing and singing prevailed well into the wee hours of Friday and Saturday nights as the sounds of reggae blasted from P.A.'s loud enough to be heard and felt for many city blocks. Papa San's own father manned such a sound system every week-dubbed "Black Universe"-and his naturally gifted son soaked up the music like the Caribbean sun. The strains of reggae greats like Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, and John Holt were interspersed with a wide range of American pop and rock music, from venerable crooner Nat King Cole to disco diva Donna Summer, all adding additional color to young Papa San's musical palette. By the age of only 12, he had already begun performing with artists more than twice his age, cultivating his prodigious gifts with words and music, with acclaim beyond his young imagination only a few years away.
Reared by his grandmother, and being taught the doctrines of the Rastafarian religion, Papa San explains that he never had any teaching or ministering in Christianity or the church. "As a child growing up, I always believed that if I just achieved certain material things that everything would be all right," says Papa San. "As I became older, I had lots of success. I had lots of things, and had tried lots of things, but I never found the satisfaction I had expected. I had given some bad messages in my songs, and I myself at one time had been involved with firearms, and had run-ins with the police. I had two brothers and two sisters, and both my brothers were killed in street violence. "Life began to take some different turns down roads I had never anticipated. I would have said I had a relationship with the Creator, but I was obviously moving in the wrong direction," he continues. "One day, I opened the Bible and began to read it, and the Holy Spirit started ministering to me, saying in my heart: `You need to get yourself straight. You have to get yourself right.' I wondered if God could really forgive me of my sins over all the years and accept me into His Kingdom. My wife and I went to a church and the pastor told us about Christ. My eyes began to open and I knew that I had to receive Him, regardless of what anyone else thought or said about it."
In what could safely be called the world's first new-school, Dancehall "hymn," Papa San's words punctuate an almost choir-like anthem on Real & Personal's "Oh Zion," all undergirded with reverent but relentless rhythm. As the song fades with a lone female voice-sounding both as close and distant as heaven itself-repeating the single line, "There is a place for us," the vision of unity and one-purpose of all God's people that is the heart of Papa San and Real & Personal shines brightly, with a clear and holy light. There is indeed "a place for us," and just like the singular, untouchable sound that Papa San can truly call his own, it goes infinitely farther than any preconceptions or easy definitions could begin to convey, and speaks not to just one genre or culture, but to the very heart of humankind itself.

Judy Mowatt Bath, St. Thomas Project - Led by God
In the year 2003, Judy Mowatt was led by God to stage her birthday celebration with the people of Bath, St. Thomas in the form of a health fair Christmas treat. In addition, to culminate with a grand gospel concert with the most current, anointed ministers in the industry.
The directive from God was specific, but not having a family member or friend from the area, sister Judy had to seek advice from key people in the community. She recalls her only link to the town of Bath,
"The hot spring situated above the Bath Fountain Hotel has medicinal and healing properties and it is also one of my cooling out spots."
Walking by faith and obedience to God, you're able to produce and fulfill the purpose.
This project is entitled, "JUDY MOWATT'S BIRTHDAY BASH."
This now annual event is an all day - early night celebration. This calendar year it will be staged at its "original" birth place, BATH PRIMARY and JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL on December 20th 2006.
The day activities begin with a Health Fair, preceded by an opening ceremony. The Jamaican Information Service (JIS) will be there to offer media coverage. Several generous doctors and nurses from various medical institutions and practices (private & public) will be on hand to render their services "FREE OF COST."
The St. Thomas medical team will offer FREE HIV TESTING and COUNSELLINGS. One of the main focus is combating the spread of this deadly disease in the parish.
The lions' Club, the Diabetic Association will offer blood pressure checks, eye screening etc. There will be a live chat room with a professional counselor for troubled teens. Activities will be provided for the little ones.
Grooming for the elderly by professional make-up artistes and manicurists will be available "FREE OF COST." Special talks of a healthy life-style will be had. Special entertainment and food for all.
A project of this magnitude would be impossible had it not been for the labour of love given by our faith partners and corporate entities. We are expecting to cater to five hundred (500) adults and six hundred (600) children. Help us put a genuine smile on the faces of our brothers and sisters of Bath this coming festive season.
Remember the "fortunate few" are responsible for the "unfortunate many."
We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to the following;
Dr. Michael Pitter and his team,
Our Father Music Business (OFMB)
Digicel, Super Plus, Food For The Poor, Juicy Patties, Burkes Transport, D&G, T. Geddes Grant, Shanachie Records, Bob Marley Foundation,

Prodigy: A Radical for Christ -- "I will die for the Gospel"
By: Claude Mills
Photos By: Carlington Wilmot
If you want to find Prodigy, you have to ambush him at the Herbal Life on Braemar Avenue where he hangs out everyday.
"I like it here, I can do my meditation on the word right here in this quiet atmosphere, and drink a tea and shake, it's a healthy thing for my immune system," he told YardFlex.Com.
He is wearing a black shirt with the words 'A blood donor saved my life' emblazoned on the front and Mathew 26:28 (This is my blood of the covenant....) printed on the back. He wears silver jewellery.
He is one of the new faces leading the reggae gospel charge in Jamaica.
So songs like 'Every Morning' and 'Sin No More' came out of particular struggles that I had, while other songs like I Love You Lord featuring Crissy D came out of worship and quiet time being spent with God."
The Chosen Prodigy is currently being distributed by Caribbean Gospel.
Shows in England, St. Maarten, and the Turks and Caicos, and Canada in August.
"Reggae gospel is still on the rise and it's getting bigger especially in the wider Caribbean. The UK is one of those markets that is showing a lot of potential as well.
"People come to me, say they heard the testimony, and say, if this young yute can do it at 21, then why can't I? Recently, at a show in Clarendon, I had an altar call and I asked if there were people who didn't know Jesus, and 25 people came up and I was actually surprised," he told YardFlex.Com.
He said that given the reaction of some of the audience members, especially those at the front, he had been pondering whether it was necessary to make an altar call or not.
"The persons at the front were in a frenzy for Jesus, it seemed that they had been saved already, but I listened to the spirit, and did it, and several persons at the front, young people, actually came forward."
He said that within church circles, he has met stiff opposition from what he dubs "Scribes and Pharisees' who criticize his method of evangelicizing to proselytes.
"I am not going to listen to jazz, maybe when I am older, I can appreciate it more, now, I gravitate towards dancehall, that is what I am using to draw a younger audience closer to God," he said.
"I think the critics are afraid of change, they don't want to open their minds to new things. When the church started, the 'Ole Ragged Cross' was enough to save souls, and it worked, it saved millions, but we must be flexible in this fight to win new souls. The word of God says to take the gospels to the highways and by-ways, and dancehall is the vehicle I am going to use."
Songs such as Every Morning which speaks about the temptations and struggles of Christian brethren with the opposite sex, Tell the Devil Now, and Sure with Minister Goddy Goddy, Prodigy's older brother.
"My brother Goddy Goddy was actually a secular deejay called Snakeman. I admired him a lot and his conversion to Christianity played a big role in me getting converted because one week after, I accepted Jesus Christ as well," he told YardFlex.Com.
His debut album, 'The Chosen Prodigy' got rave reviews from critics, and for a time, was the top selling gospel album in the country. However, Prodigy plans to up the ante with the release of his latest effort, 'The Tabernacle' which will be more dancehall-influenced and edgy. One of the lead songs from the album will be 'Don't Judge Me', a scathing commentary about his early experiences in the church, and the criticism and envy that came with his recording success.
He also believes that the 'hypocrisy in the church is the biggest problem, they are afraid that we will explose the church lifestyle, but they should not worry if there is nothing to hide".
"I plan to target the dancehall more than the church with this album. That is where I feel that we should direct our attention, we have to win souls, and I will do what God tells me to do, the dancehall is where the fight for souls is being won and lost, and I am not afraid, I will dead for the gospel like Stephen if that is God's will, I am one of the radicals in the church...a radical for Christ,"
He is a big fan of Wayne Marshall, who he says "uses a lot of positive songs like Forgive Him Please with Alaine and Overcome to get his message across".
"I also like Assassin because he writes sensibly and I admire the stage performances of Beenie Man," he said.
Prodigy was last at a secular stage show in December 2005 when he attended the annual Sting concert in Portmore.
"Prodigal Son had been billed to perform that night, and I was there to offer support and take in is performance, I was accompanying a fellow gospel deejay. I
"I would love to take to someone from VP Records to get them to stop separating gospel reggae from secular deejays like Capleton and Sizzla. Those artistes have their own religion, but it should be seen as one with gospel reggae, we are a part of the fraternity, I would like to talk to someone with the power to change how reggae gospel is marketed and distributed to the international audience," he said.
He also wants to make some changes in his management structure.
