With more people than sand on the beach Goldie Lox Promotions really hit the nail on the head with its "Olympic Gold Edition Birthday Party" at the Sugar Man Beach Club in Portmore St. Catherine. The party got on the way from in the afternoon when there was a six a side football competition; with the winning team being awarded ‘Beach Sexy’ medals and cash.

Looking down at the party from Hellshire Hills, the venue had a striking resemblance to places like Disney World, with the more than 1000 people attending and the amazing water slide rising about 10 feet in the air.

Celebs and entertainers present included: Itty and Fancy Cat, Zip Joc Amber, female artist such as Lady Saw rolling through in her black Hummer with MUMA on the license plate, Macka Diamond, Stacious, D'Angel, Queen Paul, Spice, Ishana - Daseca's first girl, the Bembe Squad, Q45, Heart-A-Love Crew, Foota Hype, Raz and Biggie, Mystic, Vybz Kartel, the Portmore Empire and the Zip fm Crew.

Walking into the party with a crew the size of an army, Vybz Kartel did big things for the bar. Nikki Z told Yardflex, "I really appreciate the move by Addi because he really support my bar; because buying liquor for so much people is a whole lot of money.” She explained that people in Jamaica may not like this move but in comparing Vybz Kartel to other celebs in the world, she said, "other celebs in the world would do the same thing that Kartel did so she didn’t see anything wrong - so big up to Addi and the Portmore empire."

Listing a host of ‘Big Ups’, Nikki Z thanked all including: Heart-A-Love Crew, Pepe Goodison, Raz and Biggie, Mystic, Lady Saw, Ishana, Shooters Hill Girls and Foota Hype. She thanked all who came out and showed love by celebrating with her.

On December 6 The Liguanae Club is set to be transformed by the expected onslaught of top quality entertainment to be featured in the much anticipated, ‘It’s a Reggaelution’.

Reggae music greats will be on hand to stir up the relaxed atmosphere at the St. Andrew spot and Buju Banton, who has not yet performed in Jamaica this year will make a rare appearance.

Promoter, Tara Palyfair-Scott, CEO of Rasta Rules, says she is pleased with the collaboration of great artists, DJs and phenomenal sponsors who have come together to stage this unique event that will also feature musically astute Rootz Underground and number one hit-making Tarrus Riley.

On Saturday, November 22, the Abe Issa Auditorium at St Georges College was filled to capacity, as the life of the Honorable Byron Lee Snr., O.J. C.D., was celebrated in a thanksgiving service.

The Rev. Father Michael Lewis, Rev. Father Francis Ryan, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Richard Albert and other clergy of the Archdiocese of Kingston officiated at the service that doubled as the end of a glorious era in Jamaica’s music history; since even though the band “Byron Lee and The Dragonaires” continues on with a never-ending vivacity, its founder, who launched Jamaican culture worldwide has ended his time here with us.

Well-wishers crowded the streets and dignitaries, family and friends packed the North Street, Kingston venue to say good-bye to one of Jamaica’s loyal and most beloved sons.

‘The Dragonaires’ were on hand to give a splendid musical tribute and other tributes were forthcoming from the Honorable Prime Minister Bruce Golding, the Most Honorable Edward Seaga O.N., P.C and Ronnie Nasralla.

Byron Lee’s children were actively involved in the thanksgiving service, with his daughter Deanna M. Lee saying the prayers of the faithful and sons and grandson: Byron A. Lee Jr., Edward J. Lee and Alexander J. Lee – respectively, acting as pallbearers.

It is the wish of the Lee family that all the much appreciated prayers continue for them, as they experience this time of bereavement. They also have expressed sincere gratitude for all acts of kindness, expressions of sympathy and moral support extended to them at this time.

Tunes blazing up the dancehall these days
First we start off with “Shot a Buss” by Black Ryno on ‘The Beast’ riddim that was produced by TJ Records. In this track he sounds as if he’s helping “the teacher" to try sink Movado’s Ship; since in the intro he bravely says "a Ryno any weh yuh deh mi a guh find yuh, if a fi bleach and time yuh, God caan save yuh a cud a him deh beside yuh, mi have some dollor coin fi fling inside yuh" could he be thinking like the Teacher - Vybz Karel?

Movado is also on the same riddim - song titled “Gangsta Nuh Play”. The highlight in this tune also stems from the intro, "TJ, how dem fi war mi a day when dem fraid a di sun." In the end he says, “I am so sick - not meaning mi sick fi public, I’m like an object and war a mi subject, true mi seh overcome dem think mi hang ova gun… imma buss dis till jehovah come.”

Next is Vybz Kartel also on the same riddim track with “Kill Dem”. This tune is directly pointing fingers at Movado.

Dancer Ding Dong come forward with another hit after “Killer Swing”. Ding’s new hit is the song entitled “Gallis”. Basically this a tune bigging up the gallis man dem.

Busy Signal is up next with “Trading Places”. The track is all about the inner city people living the life of the rich and famous. A hot line from the track is, "Picture Michael Lee-Chin hold off the gully side; him and the thugs dem a bleach dat means yuh caan go beside" This track is produced by Shane Brown, Busy Signal’s manager.

Laden continues the hard work with a next banging single on the ‘Beauty’ riddim. This is a well composed girls tune. The track is Hot!

Not hearing much from Aidonia but he still has his head above the water with "Eyes Dem a Bleed" on the Equinox label. A blazing weed tune fi all the herbalist dem.

Beenie Man with "Gimmie" on the Genius label is all over the clubs bangin through the speakers. The Doctor has always been treating his girls right and this track is surely proof for anyone who didnt believe that fact.

Vybz Kartel and female dancehall DJ Spice, recently teamed up for the photo shoot of the new “Daggering” condom advertising campaign.

Done at a popular hangout spot in Upper St Andrew, the ad sees the dancehall bad girl and the war teacha getting very up close and really personal.

There were some almost semi-nude scenes that could have been the cause of an immediate upward shift in the temperature in the room.

Dates for the release of these ads and the campaign’s launch, are still sketchy at this time, but one thing is certain; the shots are sure to get the tongues of the populace wagging.

Some industry people are even speculating that the photo shoot was the cause of a recent altercation between the DJ and her boyfriend. However those assumptions have not been confirmed and are without merit.

Foota Hype, the famed sound system selector, renown internationally for his affiliation with the dancehall powerhouse, “The Alliance” - was robbed of his motor vehicle early Wednesday morning.

The misfortune occurred while he played at Weddy Wednesday, which was home to fellow selector, Billy Slaughter's birthday celebrations.

Foota Hype in giving his take on the incident believes the theft was conducted by a very crafty criminal element. When I exited the party and noticed that my vehicle was nowhere in site, I was understandably surprised, Foota reflected. He added, “I then noticed that there was absolutely no sign of forced entry into the vehicle. There were no broken glasses, not even a piece.”

The selector is now appealing to those concerned to return some very important documents which were left inside the vehicle. Further, he appealed that while those concerned could keep the vehicle and the laptop, he would appreciate if his important documents were returned, since he does not intend to press charges. “I'm even wiling to pay a fee for the return of these documents he said.”

The Negril West End Cluster is an organization made up of over eighty small hotels, restaurants, bars, artisans and other businesses geared towards the tourism sector of the West End, Negril. On Saturday the 6th of December the cluster will be under-taking the staging of the Reggae Marathon victory party. This event is dubbed the Finish Line and will be held at the MX3 Park on the One Love Drive. During a recent trip to the World Travel Market in London, Tourism Minister, the Hon. Edmund Bartlett spoke with more than 200 members of the Jamaican community there.

Providing updates on the island’s new developments, the Tourism Chief urged the UK based Jamaican Diaspora to represent their homeland as ambassadors.

Emphasizing the importance of contributing as ambassadors while investing assets in Jamaica, The Minister referred to the involvement of Jamaicans in the UK as crucially significant.

He said, “I recognize that every Jamaican living overseas is integral to the country's survival, especially with the current global economic crisis now affecting everyone. Your assistance in maintaining and creating partnerships between the UK and Jamaica in order to keep the tourism product profitable is very important, especially at this time.”

Jamaica’s High Commissioner to the UK, Mr. Burchell Whiteman and other Tourist Board leaders were in attendance.

The impossible had happened, a great mountain had fallen!

The man I had looked up to since childhood was no more.

My brother was gone.

He had died after a battle with illnesses that ranged from Karposi sarcoma, Tuberculosis to headaches. It was heartbreaking and I thought the family would never be able to heal from the pain.

Never again would I see his smile, hear his voice, or cower in fear as he admonished me for wrongdoing or smile in anticipation of his praises after doing exceptionally well at something.

Never again would I see my mother smile after hearing his car in the driveway as he came to visit his “old queen” with a boot full of goodies and treats.

AIDS had once again destroyed a family’s dreams.

My brother Tau was in the prime of his life. At 35, he had just got married and had a two-year old son. He has just finished paying for his house and was looking forward to a long life with his wife and children in the house of his dreams but all this never happened. The minute he tested positive for HIV, he accepted his fate and so did my family.

From my father, mother, siblings to his wife and her family- it all became a matter of waiting. Making him comfortable and praying to God was all we could do.

That was the fate of many People Living with HIV (PLHIV) who tested HIV positive early on in Zimbabwe’s epidemic.

Anti-retroviral therapy was not something we knew of then. Yes, there were rumours that rich people were going to neighbouring countries such as South Africa and accessing medicines for AIDS but this was not just anyone. You had to have loads of money to do this, something that my family and many others who were in the same boat, did not possess.

Treatment, was available but only for the rich.

Those who fell ill then, waited for death, and indeed it visited them.

Today should be different.

But Zimbabweans will tell you that for some, there is really not much difference from those years when my brother and others like him, just died. There is not much difference from those days when only the rich survived. With the country’s biggest medical aid companies, CIMAS and PSMAS struggling to stay afloat in the midst of the worst economic crisis to hit a country that is not at war, just being sick is something that many Zimbabweans can afford to do.

Thirty year old Wonder of Mbare, Harare’s oldest high-density suburb, says just the thought of succumbing to TB, pneumonia or any other opportunistic infection fills him with dread. “I tested HIV positive in 2001. I have been on treatment since 2003. My medical aid cover used to make it easy for me to get my ARVs but now, our company is just failing to keep up with medical aid costs. “While they used to pay for my drugs as well as my wife’s, they are now failing. Doctors and hospitals, that we go to for regular check-ups and monitoring, are also no longer accepting medical aid as they prefer cash,” he said.

But where does a Zimbabwean get cash from? The bite is even worse for those who are not on medical aid. Cleopas Mutsinda works in a clothing firm. Zimbabwe’s textile industry is facing one of the hardest crunches of all time. Paying wages on a weekly basis has become difficult for many employers. Harare’s industrial site, once a hive of activity has gone deadly silent over the past five years.

Cleopas and others at his workplace last reported for work three weeks ago after their Asian employer failed to access the cash that is needed to pay all 30 of his remaining workforce. Over 100 have since been laid off. The maximum limit at Zimbabwe’s banks stands at $1 000 000 (the equivalent of USD2). Transport to and from work for many stands at an average of the same amount.

Speaking of his plight Cleopas said: “People Living with HIV and AIDS do not have to die, we know but when a situation is like this, obviously we will die. I cannot remember the last time I ate a well-balanced meal and I have not been able to keep my appointments at the clinic. I am supposed to report in at least twice a month but I haven’t had any money for transport for close to six months now.” Asked whether he is not worried that this would compromise his well-being, Cleopas says: “It’s not a question of choice but just how it is. We call upon policy makers at all levels to do something about the plight of PLHIV in Zimbabwe.”

A medical practitioner Dr Michael Chikwanha, who operates in Harare, said treating people had become difficult as doctors, clinics and hospitals also did not have any drugs and medicines in stock. Writing out prescriptions, was one way of getting round this, but doctors knew that only a small percentage actually managed to buy the prescribed drugs. “It’s a difficult situation. We don’t have the money to buy drugs so that we can give them out to our patients. We also are failing to remain operational because what medical aid pays us is too little. When we charge cash, very few patients can afford to come in.

Looking at it from all these angles, you can see that it is almost impossible to get an efficient health delivery system running in the country today,” he said

As the world prepares to commemorate World AIDS Day under the theme of Leadership, it really is crucial for government and civil society organizations to ensure that they deliver on the promises they have made in the past, one of them being that of universal access to prevention, care, treatment and support to all by 2015.

Otherwise the despair that hit my family on that bleak day when Tau breathed his last at a nursing home somewhere in Harare will hit many more families.

It will be worse however, because this time, the treatment to ensure that people living with HIV live longer and healthier lives, is available.

It just needs to be made available to those who need it.

The Reggae Boyz united Jamaica last night as one and all came out in their national colors to support the team as they fought hard to win the 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifier.

Losing the game and not qualifying to play in South Africa was one downside of the evening, however nothing could ever compare to their great feat of getting Jamaicans together as one.

It was quality football amidst a sea of black gold and green, as the Reggae Boyz gave fans the caliber of ball playing that exemplified immense skill and stamina; but the thing that many talked about was the unity in The National Stadium.

Reverend Al Miller said a prayer before the match and he made mention of the great togetherness saying, "With all the crime and violence that is rocking our nation, it is a beautiful sight to see all united tonight as we enter into this crucial match."

Many in the crowd commented on how beautiful it was to see Jamaicans together as one in peace and harmony. Some felt it should happen more often. Everyone was filled with pride and eager to show their support. There were no issues of standoffishness amongst Reggae Boyz supporters.

"Tonight it matters not if you are from uptown or downtown, all that matters is that we are Jamaicans and as Jamaicans we all want to see the Reggae Boyz win. It is a shame we will not qualify for the World Cup but at the end of the day we saw a quality match played by quality players and I am proud of my Reggae Boyz," a fan called Stephanie stated.

Melanie, a first time spectator said, "I come for the fun of the match. I always hear about how much fun it is and tonight the vibe is wicked. I don't understand football but I love it anyway."

She was referring to the ‘wicked’ musical vibe before the match and at half time, when selectors played some rocking tunes; as well as the energy generated from chanting, stamping and cheering for the Reggae Boyz.

The team will play again in December in the Finals of the Digicel Caribbean Championships in Jamaica

On November 9 Karla Henry of The Philippines was crowned MISS EARTH® 2008, following the 8th edition of the pageant, held at the Clark Expo Amphitheater in Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines.

The MISS EARTH® Beauty Pageant was initiated in 2001 by Carousel Productions Inc., who basically wanted to reinvent and improve beauty competitions by introducing the idea that beauty queens would be good and effective advocates for worthy causes. Organizers realized that beauty pageants are extremely popular, with many people not only admiring the beauties, but also aspiring to become crowned. As a result they decided this would be an excellent platform to launch an awareness campaign around the preservation of the environment and protection of beautiful Mother Earth. It was thought that for beauty to last, we must live in a healthy world.

Miss Earth Jamaica 2008 is 21 year old Simone Kristen Burke and while she was not successful as either semi-finalist or finalist, the conscious ‘earthy’ beauty represented Jamaica very well. Born in St. Andrew, Jamaica, she developed a penchant for animals and nature while living for a time in her mother’s native land of Guyana. Returning to Jamaica at age 10, she attended Immaculate Conception prep and high schools where she was elected Head Girl in 2005 - 2006. Currently enrolled at the University of the West Indies, she plans to complete a Bachelors Degree in Biochemistry and aspires to be a Veterinarian. Her charismatic persona and determination to stand up for the preservation of the earth, thrust her into the winning spot to step up for Jamaica.

This year’s winner from the Philippines created history for the pageant, since it was the first time that a contestant from the Philippines as well as from Asia, took the crown. The runners-up were: Miss Earth Air (first runner-up) – from Tanzania, Miriam Odemba; Miss Earth Water (second runner-up) from Mexico, Abigail Elizalde; Miss Earth Fire (third runner-up) from Brazil, Tatiane Alves.

The final question in the Miss Earth 2008 contest was: "If you have the chance to speak to the newly-elected US President Barack Obama about the state of the global environment, what would you tell him?"

Miss Earth 2008, Karla Henry said: "If ever I'd meet him, I would encourage him to implement environmental knowledge in the curriculum of all schools whether in the United States or in the Philippines. Environmental knowledge is something that all of us must share, but most importantly we must teach the youth that this is something that we should instill in them so that in the near future they will be the ones to take care of our mother Earth."

The beauty queens toured different islands of the Philippines with the theme "Green Lifestyle", promoting recycling and engaging in activities like tree planting in the provinces of Albay, Batangas, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Palawan,and Rizal.

Festival promoters, Turn-Key Productions is bringing another grand showcase of the world’s dearest and best for the three day festival that has been a ‘must see’ for many who travel from far and wide to attend. Formerly dubbed ‘The Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival’, the Fest has been re-named; and the new branding of this annual event is now JAMAICA Jazz and Blues Festival, as it has been endorsed by the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB), the Title Sponsor. Former owner and promoter, Air Jamaica, remains committed as a partner and will now be a presenting sponsor.

Pleased with the new JTB affiliation, President of Turn-Key Productions, Walter Elmore said, "We are excited about the name change as it reflects the confidence that the Jamaica Tourist Board has placed in us to stage a world class event which is worthy to be associated with the brand JAMAICA."

Expected to be even more exhilarating than in previous years, the festival will continue its tradition of featuring the very best Jamaican and international performers. Grammy Award winning R&B icon, Lionel Ritchie, the multi-talented UK newcomer, Estelle, hot old-timers, The O-Jays, super Reggae crooner, Maxi Priest and hit-makers Atlantic Starr are among the many artists slated to electrify the stage this year.

It will be the O’Jays 50th year of performing as a group in 2009, and they plan to produce an anniversary DVD, using their performance in Jamaica, which will be their debut anniversary showcase.

Maxi Priest is also planning to ride on the high tides of the festival as his latest CD will be released around the same time.

Top vocalist Randy Crawford will be among the stellar line-up and he appears with pianist Joe Sample. Both have a long history of thrilling audiences with hits like, “Streetlife” from 1979, that was recorded with R&B veterans The Crusaders and their most recent hit, “Feeling Good.” Saxophonist Alto Reed from Bob Seger’s Silver Bullet Band will perform as Alto Reed and the Blues Entourage. Lou Gramm who formerly sang lead with Foreigner, will be there, as will Nikki Yanofsky, the Canadian 14 year-old, who was a hit last year at The Aqueduct on Rose Hall.

More than 40,000 people are expected to attend the JAMAICA Jazz and Blues Festival 2009; and they will stream in from all corners of the world, as there is currently increased attention to promoting it globally.

Tickets will go on sale later this year.

Hot Mondays is only getting hotter as the holiday spirit enters the atmosphere. The usual throng of revelers turned out this week to turn Savanna Plaza completely upside down with zealous merriment.

As one of the regular spots where top entertainers rock, groove and dagger, the Hot Mondays weekly session is also the number one place for ‘celeb sightings’.

This week’s street dance was ‘off the chain’ with entertainers like: Elephant Man, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Ninja Kid, Harry Toddler, Gyptian, Cutty Ranks and I Octane bubbling in the place. A whole slew of upcoming artists were also getting down at the spot.

It was also a pleasure to see the woman who has been crowned, ‘Miss Dagga’ – livening up the place.

It was definitely a night of ‘fulljoyment’ for all.

Beenie Man has launched a collective counter attack on a series of scandals that plagued him during the year. As the 2008 draws to an end ‘The Doctor’ has decided to settle the scores in one shot with his latest release titled, “That’s Life”.

Recorded on Sonny Spoon’s rhythm, ‘Chemistry’, ace dancehall DJ Beenie Man, speaks out in his song on the alleged disloyalty of his wife Michelle ‘D’Angel Downer-Davis. In the song he says, “dem say mi nearly mad and mi wife tek another man, so what, mi get another gal…a hundred dozen gal soon reach a million, life is what you make it, move on."

Other controversies are addressed in his verses that touch many topics, like the supposed attack on DJ Spice, that Beenie Man denies vehemently saying, "who box Spice? Yu nuh hear say a 20 man/last time mi check myself, mi neva have 20 hand."

On a lighter side Beenie Man speaks of his numerous headlines in The Gleaner and Jamaica Observer this past year, saying that by now he should have shares in those media houses.

On a more sensitive note, ‘The Doctor’ shares his feelings about the pregnancy of Desha Gaye, his teenaged daughter with the following lyrics:

Markham Park in Sunrise, Florida came alive recently as over 20,000 people turned out for the 7th annual Jerk Festival.

Jerk connoisseurs were out in full force at the event that was mainly sponsored by Air Jamaica and Publix. No-one left disappointed, as the combination of all styles of jerk food, beverages of all types and outstanding live entertainment resulted in a Jerk Fest that was an exciting success.

Grown to become one of Florida’s most anticipated Caribbean events, the Jerk Festival gives chefs a chance to not only showcase their skills, but also compete for prizes in the Publix Jerk Cook-Off. Traditionally the main feature of the festival, this serious competition sees rival chefs going at it with all the ingenuity and spices that they possess as they vie for the coveted gold, silver and bronze dutch pot trophies, bragging rights and cash prizes.

Indigenous to Jamaica, the art of Jerk cooking has become very popular worldwide. While pork and chicken are the usual foods prepared in this ‘barbecue type’ fashion with a unique blend of seasonings, other foods like tofu, yam, fritters; and even jerk popcorn and ice cream were on hand for the international audience in attendance.

Certainly an event to evoke dreams of home, the Jamaicans were out in full force, not only thrilling their palates, but also enjoying the entertainment, like presentations at the Jamaica National Cultural Stage, where a Cooyah Clothing driven fashion show and a showcase of the Miss Jamaica Florida winners was presented. More fun was to be had at places like: the Party Pavilion, where popular DJs ran things; the Grace/ Western Union Cultural Stage, that featured folklore and comedy; and the Main Stage, where the music was Jammin.

Dedicated to the late Byron Lee O.J., the Main Stage presentation included stellar acts like: Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, Chalice, Causion and Shiela Hylton.

Winner of the jerk cook-off competition was Dr. Sharon Jefferson of Plantation, who was also last year’s winner.

The event was produced by Riddims Marketing and Jamaica Awareness Inc. Other sponsors were: Western Union, Grace Fods, Sun Sentinel, WAVS Radio and Caribean National Weekly.

Last Saturday night Rebel T was crowned ‘The Greatest’ at the Guiness Sounds of Greatness finals that rocked Kingston’s Mas Camp in what was definitely the most intense showdown since the competition began. Rebel T and Bodyguard were the major players, as they battled for the grand prize of a J$250,000.

Scheduled to begin at 8:00pm, the event got underway around two hours late and by then Mas Camp was tightly packed with patrons grooving to the early juggling of Turbo Crown from Spanish Town and one of Portmore’s best, 876AreaCode. Setting the mood with some 1990’s dancehall and reggae selections, the two moved the crowd for about an hour.

At 11:00pm it was clash time with the first round of 30 minutes showcasing each sound system’s ‘juggling skills’. Rebel T won the toss and chose to have Bodyguard begin; and their introduction was quite a fine start as they threw down some vintage tunes from artists like bounty Killer and Super Cat; that got the crowd hyped up.

Rebel T took their turn after an excellent Bodyguard round and they certainly stood their ground. Coming on strong with the same flavor, Rebel T managed to conjure up more audience response and as a result they were chosen as winners of round one by the judges.

It was then on to round two and the ‘tune for tune’ set, during which each sound could only play ten tracks. Bodyguard was a bit sloppy in this round, but that resulted from some unfortunate technical difficulties brought on by some faulty equipment provided by promoters. There was no sympathy in store for Bodyguard as judges gave Rebel T the second round despite the technical hitch that was out of Bodyguard’s control.

‘Dub for dub’ was the theme of round three and dubplates were flying from each sound, but the highlight of the night was a Bodyguard exclusive from Michael Sharp of TVJ; dissing Fire Ras of Rebel T.

The ‘dis’ spoke of Rebel T and some connection to the raping of the farmer’s pigs in the Maypen area. Rebel T walked onto the stage and said, “Dat bad, but hear wah, di people dem a country seh yu lame cause mi get more date a country dan yu.” As Rebel T’s next tune began, the crowd went ‘beserk’ – with torches and cheers going off at just the introduction of his dubplate.

Played by selector Fire Ras the dub was from Chi Ching Ching, and it declared, “Rebel T don’t need no bodyguard, a di girl dem guard we.” The dub continued in dissing mode to say “Bodyguard get buddy everyday.”

A Vybz Kartel special ended the clash with the song titled, “My Place A My Place,” played by Rebel T; and causing a super pumped Fire Ras to jump off the stage in excitement.

Judges, Jack Scorpio and Lain had a difficult time choosing a winner, but the crowd had already indicated their choice. Bodyguard was evidently displeased by the choice made and they walked out of the park.

Elon Robinson, one of Jamaica’s top producers in the mid nineties has died. Robinson whose Top Ranking and El Paso label adorned several hits of the 90s passed away in a Miami Hospital on Thursday, November 13th, 2008 after being admitted with chest pains.

Some of his work over the years includes: “Fight Back” with Garnett Silk and Richie Stephens; “Suspicion”- Delroy Wilson; “Buff Baff” sung by Richie Stephens; “Baby Be Still” - Garnett Silk; “Knocking On Heavens Door” with Ed Robinson; “Does She” by First Blood and many others.

Throughout his career Robinson produced songs with many artists like: Terry Ganzie, Gregory Isaacs, Chaka Demus, Johnny P, Cutty Ranks, Jack Raddix, Tony Tuff, Singing Melody and others.

Robinson lived in Montego Bay for the past 30 years and was the owner of El Paso and Top Ranking Record Stores in Sam Sharpe Square, Baywest, Westgate and Spring Plaza, Born in Water Works, Westmoreland, he was a successful businessman operating many fabulous clothing stores in Western Jamaica as well.

He is survived by his wife Pauline children Roger, Randy, Paula and Susan. Mr. Robinson would have been 60 years old in December.

Several families and friends in Westmoreland are now in mourning after getting the news of the death of 18 year-old Lisa Leslie who hailed from Three Miles River and 18 year-old Carey Dawes of Walter Cheddesing Drive, Llandilo.

According to reports, the two were traveling on the Petersfield Main Road in Westmoreland with a group of friends from a Birthday Party in Savanna-La-Mar on Saturday, November 15, 2008. They were on their way to Montego Bay where they planned to attend another event, when the two cars carrying the students ended up in a serious crash.

Dawes who was a passengers in one of the cars was thrown from the vehicle and died on the spot, while Leslie died while undergoing treatment in hospital.

Eight other persons were admitted for treatment, six were released. Leslie was a student of the Montego Bay based Pre-University School, Union Street, while Dawes was a student of the Frome Community College in Savanna-La-Mar.

One man shot dead outside of JLP Conference
Labor Party (JLP) was holding their 65th annual conference.

Reports state that before the AGM started, some shooting erupted just outside the arena, that ended up resulting in the killing of one man and wounding of two others who are in hospital now battling for their lives.

While no reports have been filed as to the possible motive for the fatal shooting, the Prime Minister and leader of the JLP said investigations will be thorough.

Reggae Boyz set for one of the most crucial games this year

Jamaica is set to play Canada this week on Wednesday, November 19, in what has been termed a must win game.

It is a most important game for the Reggae Boyz, since winning this FIFA World Cup CONCACAF Qualifier will set them further in line for 2010 and the World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Reggae Boyz are being challenged to not only win, but to beat the Canadians by 3 clear goals.

Teacher pleads guilty to theft

On December 15 Tasty Shaw will learn her fate as she has been ordered to return then for sentencing by Resident Magistrate Glen Brown who heard of the bizarre circumstances that saw her rob her colleague.

A teacher by profession, Shaw pleaded guilty to the charges of stealing $10,000 from her co-worker’s purse. She reportedly yielded to the temptation, after being asked to hold the purse for a moment. Her co-worker reported the matter once she discovered an envelope with $10,000 was missing from the purse, upon retrieving it.

Shaw was arrested, charged and strongly reprimanded by the RM Brown.

It was unfortunately Ken Boothe’s turn to go through what UK immigration officials call the random spot check last week, much to his chagrin.

The veteran artist and his wife felt highly humiliated after being put through the mill at the United Kingdom’s Gatwick airport.

He told The Star that he needed to let people know about the extremely unfair experience that saw both him and his wife being subjected to an extensive and distressing process.

Boothe explained that upon arriving at the UK point of entry, instead of the customary initial questioning by immigration officers, that usually seeks the answer to queries like, “what is the purpose of your visit,” he was verbally accosted with a question that came as a shocking surprise. While inspecting Boothe’s passport the immigration officer’s first question was whether or not he was wanted by the police.

A seasoned traveler, the Jamaican icon, who has been thrilling audiences across the world for decades, set the officer straight as he has never been a wanted man.

Next the couple’s documents were taken away for further scrutiny and returned by a different officer who was female. The woman then gave Jamaica’s musical hero a thorough search of his luggage and pockets, before taking him to another area, to tell him he was now free to go.

The couple was released after two grueling and embarrassing hours of inspection in that airport; and Boothe said he felt so awful, it was as if he was being deported; and all eyes were on him and his wife as they went through the ordeal.

One immigration officer told Yardflex that random checks know no identifications and everyone can expect that it could happen to them sometime.

Yardflex was told that these checks can happen at different points in any airport, like at the security clearance stations where people are often pulled aside and given a full body rub down, asked to remove their shoes and even given a proper head massage as well.

New York based record producing giant, Johnny Wonder has been busy executing all elements of a current production timeline, set for the shooting of Volume II of his famed “Dancehall Draft Picks” DVD series.

With more than 20 years experience in the dancehall business Wonder initiated the “Dancehall Draft Picks” series to give an in depth look into the world of dancehall.

Equipped with his camera and vivid imagination Wonder is in Jamaica to capture what is commonly thought of as the mystifying dancehall underground.

“Dancehall Draft Picks” Volume I was an immense success that saw Wonder move more than 10,000 copies worldwide. That DVD featured stellar dancehall rulers like: Busy Signal, Mavado, Aidonia and Tony Matterhorn.

The DVD series captures the raw deal, as it unfolds on the dancehall scene with engaging interviews and hot performance clips from some of the most popular studios and toughest stage shows. Volume II will mimic the first DVD in the series with video cuts that feature some of the latest hot shot artists in the dancehall.

Wonder projects that this upcoming full length documentary to be released in 2009, will give the viewer a unique perspective of reggae in Jamaica; captured by a lens that tracked some of dancehall’s hottest artists through their daily and nightly activities.

The world’s Most Beautiful Bottoms were singled out and crowned at a competition held in France last week.

Brazilian ‘butt’ beauty, Melanie Nunes Fronckowiak and French ‘derriere’ hunk, Saiba Bombote beat all contestants who hailed from more than 26 countries to take home the grand prize of ₤15,000 cash.

Forty-five finalists paraded their perfect ‘booties’ past a panel of judges in Paris that included supermodel, Adriana Karembeu and Italian astronaut, Paolo Nespoli.

Contestants entered the contest – now in its second year, by logging on to www.sloggi.com, where 11,200 entries were reportedly received. The pubic also had a say, with over 31 million people casting votes online.

The international organization, Stop Murder Music singled out eight dancehall artists at its inception and have made them a target for their campaign to see dancehall music cease to call for the attack of gays.

‘Fire Man’ Capleton is one of the eight who was approached last year by the gay rights group to sign and abide by a document called the Reggae Compassionate Act (RCA); binding artists to display onstage behavior change that would see them stop inciting violence against gays.

Capleton is one of three who signed what was launched as a sort of peace treaty and gay rights activists in Switzerland last week cried foul, because they say he went back on his word.

Completely irate that Capleton said he wouldn’t and still continued to ‘bun’ gays, a Swiss LGBT rights group called, Homosexuelle Arbeitsgruppen Basel (HABS), got together with “Stop Murder Music Bern” and petitioned those in charge to abort plans to feature Capleton in a major concert there. Scheduled to be held on November 6 at an alternative music venue called Kaserne in Basel, Switzerland, the show’s plug was pulled at the last minute.

The gay rights groups cited Capleton’s call to ‘bun’ gays at the GT Taylor Christmas extravaganza last year, as a betrayal of his word considering he had signed the RCA that same year.

Gay rights activists applaud the move in Switzerland and reportedly spoke on how tricked and cheated they felt when Capleton was found on You Tube continuing with the same hateful songs. UK based SMM activist Peter Tatchell, told reporters “Congratulations to the Swiss campaigners for getting his concert pulled. Performers who promote the killing of other human beings should not be rewarded with concerts, money and stardom.”

He also said that activists had decided to let Capleton be after he signed the RCA in 2007, but now they are coming at him again with a vengeance.

Capleton is scheduled to perform in other European countries in coming weeks. There is no comment from the ‘Fire Man’ camp.

Beenie Man, Sizzla and Capleton signed the act last year. Elephant Man, TOK, Bounty Killer, Vybz Kartel and Buju Banton were requested to sign, but they have not.

Ten girls were sashed at the Pier One Complex on Wednesday November 12, 2008. The girls will be vying for the Miss Freezone Pageant title set to take place at the Knutsford Car Park beside the Montego Bay Tax Office.

The sashing was promoted in association with L.I.M.E. Cellular Services, who also handed out souvenirs.

Serani keeps coming up with steaming tracks, making him one of Jamaica’s hottest and most ingenious dancehall artists these days.

His latest slamming tune, “No Games” is currently in heavy rotation on New York’s HOT 97 and continues to gain momentum, expanding Serani’s popularity on the international dancehall circuit.

With the added recognition that hit songs bring, the skillful performer, writer, composer and producer of music has been sought out by many for collaborations and production possibilities.

Dancehall artist, Dolamite known also as ‘The Seeker’ from the famous hardcore Harlseden based UK Suncycle Crew recently hooked up with Serani, who will be featured on a track for his upcoming album.

The track, produced by Suncycle is titled, “Disease Heart” and while its melodies ring sweet, the lyrics harshly denounce ‘haters’; and is in line with Serani’s own sentiment on the topic of ‘bad minded’ and jealous folk.

In Jamaica for the past couple of weeks, Dolamite and Serani have been working with famed video director Rick Elgood who is putting the video together for “Disease Heart” that is already a broadcast favorite; getting airplay in Jamaica and abroad after only just being released.

Big money woes have been an ongoing problem for many trusting persons who fell for another one of the investment schemes that turned out to be a ‘get rich quick’ bomb. When investors tried to collect from Partners Financial, the ‘tricksters’ offices simply closed its doors for good.

Blown out of stability by the ‘losing bomb blast’, investors in Partners Financial have been clamoring for many years at the untrustworthy mutual fund initiator, Gerald Puey who has basically taken money from a large amount of unsuspecting people, effectively duping them.

Promising a whopping 18 percent return on monies invested, Puey hoodwinked many. It has been six years since his customers were invited into the scheme that crashed miserably.

Only a very small amount of investors have been able to see any returns at all.

Is the trend of money scammers ever going to come to a screeching halt or is there more unveiling of corruption in this area to come?

The future is uncertain, but Jamaicans who have fallen prey are despondent yet still hanging on to a slight beam of hope that they will be able to retrieve some of their badly invested cash.

Minister of Tourism, Ed Bartlett, says several UK investors are looking at the possibility of investing in Jamaica’s tourism sector which is viewed by many as an excellent investment opportunity.

Mr. Bartlett, who spoke an investment seminar staged by Jamaica Trade & Invest (JT&I) at the World Travel Market in London yesterday, said the Jamaica’s strengthening of its infrastructure and also its tourism product was proof that the island was ready to welcome new investments and expand existing ones.

Citing investments in a sophisticated, telecommunications infrastructure, the current expansion and upgrading of the two international airports to world class standards, and development of modern road networks and highways as examples, Mr. Bartlett said this had created avenues for several attractive investments within the tourism sector.

According Minister Bartlett: “We’ve attracted much foreign direct investments, comprising mostly through Spanish hotels which are expected add an extra 10, 000 rooms over the next five years. There’ve also been investments in various properties ranging from high-end to affordable accommodation an we expect this will raise the current number of 30,000 rooms to 15, 000.

The tourism minister also noted that plans were underway for the construction of a jet port in the parish of St. Thomas which would open the south-eastern tourism corridor, and reposition Port Antonio as the luxury capital of Jamaica.

He added that a contract had been recently signed with Royal Cruise Lines to construct the largest cruise ship pier in the Caribbean at Falmouth, to berth the largest cruise liner ever built - ‘Oasis of the Seas”. The vessel is scheduled to begin making calls in May 2010, and is capable of carrying 5000 passengers as well as a crew of 2000.

The Tourism Minister also noted that several investment opportunities existed in specialized areas such Ecotourism, Soft Adventure, Health and Wellness, Heritage & Culture and Sports Tourism, to name a few.

He added that Jamaica had made significant progress on its globalization path, adding that the country was ready to compete successfully with other players in the global marketplace.

The Hip Hop world is notorious for homophobic attitudes, but Eminem's protégé and fellow rapper Trick Trick takes gay hate to a whole new level.

In an interview with All Hip Hop, Trick Trick said: “Homosexuals are probably not gonna like this album. I don’t want your faggot money any goddamn way. I don’t like [homosexuality]. Carry that shit somewhere else.”

The rapper also despises society's acceptance of homosexuality: “It’s just that every time that you turn on the TV, that sissy shit is on. And they act like it's fucking okay. From the roster of Digicel Rising Star hopefuls, Okeefe ‘Laden’ Aarons has emerged victoriously. With a cool, smooth singing style he captured the hearts of many during his talent show run in 2006 that took him to the top ten of the Rising Stars, from which he was the eighth person to exit.

Today Laden has come into his own with the release of many well received singles and is shining like the competitive ‘rising star’ that initially thrust him in the spotlight.

“Time to Shine” is his latest release and in just over a month since its launch it has landed on many radio charts in Jamaica and overseas, making Laden one of reggae’s latest hot commodities.

Thrilled with his progress and success to date, Laden told Yardflex that his was not a church choir or school concert triggered attraction to singing. He spoke of his first performing experience as being actually influenced by a dismal situation since it was a time in 2004 when Laden wrote and presented a song for a good friend, Mark Ritchie Gussie who passed away following a tragic accident.

Laden’s song that day was well received by all in his St Elizabeth community, including the sound system operators there and everyone encouraged him to develop his amazing talents, which he did. The Digicel Rising Star competition was the break he needed after spending two years writing more and more songs and honing his skills at the Micro Tech Studio in Junction, St. Elizabeth.

“Digicel Rising Stars did a lot for me in terms of exposure…people got to know me and when I would visit studios after that, producers recognized me and were willing to listen to me,” Laden explained.

After a short stint with Shocking Vibes where a couple of songs were recorded and one, “Gonna Lead” on the DJ Canter rhythm, was released, Laden moved on to the Big Ship Studios in search of that big break.

And it was forthcoming for the young singer of lover’s rock and social commentary who started recording for ‘kickin’ producer, Stephen McGregor and reeling in top shots one after the other. Songs like: “I’m Sorry,” “Time to Shine” and “Really Like You,” are exclusives, produced by Stephen McGregor.

Other manifestations of the McGregor/Laden collaboration include: “Gal Coward,” on the Daybreak rhythm, “No Dash Weh,” on the Day Rave rhythm, “Don’t You Like It,” on the Chiney K rhythm and “Do Your Thing” on the Work Out rhythm.

Another first for the Caribbean came on Friday November 7, when the first Caribbean Sports Icons Awards ceremony was held at The Pegasus Hotel.

The brainchild of Al Hamilton, the event focused on sports figures who had done extraordinarily well in their respective areas of athletics; and the glaring need to retain the benefits of Caribbean athletes’ successes at home.

“It has been said that we ‘aspire to expire’. It therefore follows that while we are alive we must be the best we can,” Hamilton said in his opening message.

Endorsed by the Ministry of Information Culture Youth and Sports as well as the Ministry of Tourism, the awards ceremony had corporate heavyweights sponsoring like: Digicel, West Best Food, Virgin Atlantic, The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, The Jamaica Observer, Euro Star Motors, J Wray & Nephew, Lascelles, CVM TV, Irie FM, T-Shirt Printer (UK), Willams World Products (UK), Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) and OASIS. Hamilton acknowledged their input, saying the successful launching of the Caribbean Sports Icons Awards is as a result of, “Like minded persons coming together to make a difference.”

Athletes awarded this year were: Lindy Delapenha - Jamaica – Football; Mike McCallum - Jamaica – Boxing; Sir. Garfield Sobers - Barbados – Cricket; Veronica Campbell-Brown - Jamaica - Athletics(female); Alberto Juantoreno - Cuba - Athletics(Male); Jennifer Frank - Trinidad & Tobago - Netball and Jack Warner - Trinidad & Tobago - Administrator/Coach. The Spotlight on Beijing shone for Shelly-Ann Fraser and Usain Bolt, both members of the MVP Track Club.

Speaking on behalf of the Hon. Olivia Grange, Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Alli McNab said that Caribbean athletes do well in both traditional and newly introduced sports like bobsled and skiing. “We have always been able to produce some of the finest and competitive athletes in the world,” he declared and went on to speak of those who’ve excelled and to stress on the regional challenge to enlist private sector support and investment to train, promote and market the athletes from their home.

Highlighting historical athletic greats of the Caribbean was the night’s grand finale; and as every well-serving iconic event should, tribute was paid to those who paved the way of exhibiting the Caribbean’s athletic greatness to the world between 1948 and 2007.

Special historical moments in Caribbean sports were mentioned such as: in 1952 when Garfield Sobers, a 21 year-old Barbadian, entered cricket history by scoring a world test run record of 365 runs; in 1960 when Jamaica's George Kerr raced to a bronze in the Olympic 800 metres; in 1975 when the first Cricket World Cup was dominated by the West Indies led by Clive Lloyd; 1984 – the year Jamaica got its first gold medal from Mike McCallum; and 1998 when Jamaica qualified for the World Cup.

Investigations are in full swing for one more rape crime. This time three females were swooped up from Liguanea just after 6pm in a brazen faashion.

Reports from The Star outline how three females aged 8, 16 and 20 years were confronted by gunmen after leaving an eatery in the Liguanea area last Thursday.

As the three females arrived at their car the armed men made their vicious move, taking them to Jacks Hill where they robbed and raped the two older females, reportedly leaving the 8 year-old physically unscathed.

With the matter now under high scrutiny by enforcement, no verification or further details have been forthcoming.

Over 4,000 patrons turned out at the Harbour Street Car Park in Montego Bay on Sunday November 9, 2008, to see special guest artiste Movado and a host of upcoming entertainers from Western Jamaica.

Some of the opening acts for the event which was dubbed Bikerz Bembeh were: Serial Killa, English Demus, Stiff Neck, Razor Brown, Kitty Paw, Japauline and Sister Christie.

Early in the day, several motor cyclist, led by Gitchi, put on some fine riding displays on their motor-cycles.

Rihanna appeared to be feeling rumbly in the tummy and exited the stage while performing with Chris Brown at the Acer Arena, Sydney, Australia earlier today.

It was during the “Umbrella” tune that Ri Ri began clutching her tummy. She made her way over to stage left where she stumbled off stage. Some reports say the 20 year-old hot number fainted, however her reps have a different take.

According to E-Online, Rihanna’s representative said it was very hot at that venue and Rihanna needed to go off stage to sit, have a drink of water and collect herself.

Rumors did begin to fly about a possible pregnancy. On the contrary, her rep says, Rihanna is in very good health and will be performing at her next show tomorrow.

Chris Brown finished off the song, while his darling ‘collected herself’ backstage.

Women and girls have been the steady target of unscrupulous men who have been recently wreaking havoc in different areas of Jamaica with their random kidnappings or attempts.

In what has been described as a senseless and seemingly organized crime wave, kidnappers have triggered an immense sense of insecurity and trepidation within the Jamaican society.

Stories of rape, abduction and murder have been prevalent lately and police reports warn women about imposter cabbies who have been attacking females.

One 12 year-old in Westmoreland had the fright of her life as a car filled with men stopped to pick her up earlier this week. Upon suspecting that the occupants were unfriendly, she turned to run, only to have the male occupants jump out of the car to give chase. Luckily the young girl was fast on her feet, but some girls have not been so fortunate.

Females of all ages are therefore being encouraged to be extra careful as they travel about the country and citizens are being asked to call in reports of suspicious activities.

Unsubstantiated reports mention the possibility of some sort of cult on the prowl for virgins to take part in a ritual. Police have however, not confirmed or commented on this.

The temperature was a bit on the chilly side at Alexandria Market, St Ann, but Pisces and Rebel T got temperatures high to boiling for the many who came out to support the Guiness Sounds of Greatness semi-final – Round 2.

It was a night of over the top fun for all as the crowds cheered on their favourite sound system. Rebel T ended up capturing the final spot and will be challenging Bodyguard for the title of Best Competitive Sound System in Jamaica.

It was previously reported by Yardflex that Digicel was at the helm of Usain Bolt’s relocating his residence in Kingston. However Usain, who formerly resided in the ‘Karachi’ neighborhood, was the master of his own plan; and changed residences himself to facilitate an increased need for security following the heightened spotlight on him.

Digicel’s hand in the move was an enormously helping one, as the company collaborated with Usain’s manager and a host of others to give the athlete this wonderful surprise.

Usain out of the country, when his manager, Norman Peart came up with the great idea of engineering a ‘surprise home make-over’ for the record breaking, history making star athlete. Peart shared his thoughts with Digicel’s Shelly-Ann Curan who was immediately excited about being an integral part of the plan.

In order to capture Usain’s personal taste and realize his true personality, Digicel got Mizzicam his girlfriend on board. RE-TV also became a partner in the redecorating surprise.

The actual work was then contracted out to one of Jamaica’s finest interior decorators, Pat Chatman of Fine Life Styles Limited who proved to be the perfect fit, with her ability to capture Usain’s exciting, flirty yet rootsy and down to earth personality.

In ‘reality make-over television’ mode, Digicel had only 5 days to complete the project – as Usain was due to return home. It was hustle bustle for Digicel, the decorator and all helpers, as they purchased and placed everything for the home, from furniture; like: the bed, chairs and tables; to the linen, drapes, china and cutlery. Nothing was left out and it was all in perfect place in this new Digicel inspired, ‘ready-made home’

RE-TV captured the before and after; as well as the actual thrilling moment of surprise when Usain was shown his new abode.

Outlining strategies to sustain and develop Jamaica’s tourism industry in a time when global economies are in crisis mode, tourism Minister, the Hon. Edmund Bartlett told press yesterday about major initiatives targeting Canada as well as an enhanced marketing plan for Europe.

A non-stop flight from Canada’s West coast capital, Vancouver, to Montego Bay has been facilitated already by Air Transat, Thomas Cook/Sunquest and Air Canada Vacations. This will open many doors, said the Tourism Minister, who spoke of increased visitors to Jamaica from British Columbia last year. If that trend is repeated in 2008, the new non-stop flights should boost the numbers of tourists heading to Jamaica’s west coast from Canada’s western provinces and beyond.

An additional growth in numbers of arrivals to the island could be achieved by this airlift that will secure the island’s position a leading Caribbean destination. The Minister outlined that in addition to attracting more Western Canadians, the airlift arrangement going non-stop to Vancouver could eventually open doors to places like Beijing, considering Air Canada flies from Western Canada to China.

Carrole Guntley, Director General in the Ministry of Tourism has been appointed Acting Director of Tourism following Basil Smith’s resignation on October 31. Appointed by Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Edmund Bartlett, Guntley will be in charge for the next month or until a new director is brought on board.

No stranger to the post or Tourist Board, Guntley served as Director of Tourism between 1984 and 1990 and has been actively serving the tourism industry in Jamaica for over 30 years.

By December 1st a new Director of Tourism will be identified Bartlett explained to JTB employees who are gearing up to leave later this week for the UK where they will participate in the upcoming World Travel Market (WTM).

Maintaining the smooth flow of the JTB’s functions is essential during the time of transition from one Director to another.

Executive Vice President of Def Jam Records, Shakir Stewart, who took over from Jay-Z at the head of the firm, died last weekend from what has been reported to be a self inflicted gun-shot wound.

Stewart who has signed artists like Rick Ross and Young Jeezy to Def Jam, took over from Jay-Z in June last year. The Oakland, California native was ecstatic at landing what he called ‘his dream job’ when appointed Vice President. The former A&R for LaFace Records was a graduate of Morehouse College and he has also signed Ciara to LaFace and Beyonce to Hitco Music Publishing in the past.

Upon retiring, Jay-Z spoke of his need to find a young hot executive to take over the helm of Def Jam, who would be seriously passionate about the job and have a desire to work 27 hours daily. He lamented at not really being able to pin-point such a character, But he did find those qualities in Stewart who he appointed.

Def Jam issued the following statement late Saturday night: "LA Reid and all of us at Island Def Jam Music Group are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and colleague Shakir Stewart. Shakir was an amazing man, in every sense of the word. A truly incredible friend and father who was an inspiration to not only our artists and employees, but to his family and the many people who had the privilege of counting him as a friend. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family at this very difficult time."

During his campaign for the Presidency, the new President of the United States of America, Barack Obama said, “I’m asking you to believe, not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington, but in yours.”

Americans responded positively and with an overwhelming outpouring of confidence, the people elected the first Black President of the United States on November 4th 2008.

President Obama is definitely fresh, with a global background and global view that will serve to bolster his commitment to bring about change in Washington.

Jamaicans in the US have primarily backed the Obama / Joe Biden campaign and have been quite organized and outspoken, making sure to spread the word and positively impact the outcome. On a very active and intense blog of theirs, President Obama has been lauded as a wonderful human being who is more than worthy of the Presidency,

On the Jamaicans for Obama blog, a blogger identified as ChicaWest wrote, “Something as crucial as a Presidential candidate or a human issues like AIDS is something worth supporting [and giving] our time and effort to. And people do so passionately because the outcome has a tendency to affect our very way of life.”

The Jamaican blogger continued, “Mr. Obama is not nor will he ever be a passing trend, he is a genuine beacon of hope with an audacious vigor for the livelihood of this country. He wants to rebuild our government, restore our faith in the political system at the federal and state levels, strategically bring our troops home from Iraq, implement universal health care and strengthen America's relationship with the rest of the world…amongst other things.”

Jamaicans are extremely proud of President Barack Obama and are thrilled by the success of their efforts in supporting what is the most exiting phenomenon that has appeared on the political scene in decades.

US concert promoter Bill Reid says The Wailers must ‘wake up and give’ him a grand sum of $2 million owed to him, according to a lawsuit filed in federal court last week.

The lawsuit, built on claims by Reid that after being contracted to receive 10 percent of Wailers’ concert revenues, he has been duped and never received a cent for eight years of promotional work for which the contract was drafted.

According to The Virginia Pilot, Reid’s attorney, Jeff Breit has spoken of the situation as unfortunate, considering the opposing parties were once such good partners, getting along really well.

The lawsuit states that agents for The Wailers, Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett and his wife Jennifer Miller have deviously pretended to be indigent, but they still find enough resources to maintain a luxurious lifestyle. It goes on to describe the couple as squanderers of money not totally belonging to them, whose kids attend private schools and who own expensive homes and jewelry.

Barrett was an original Wailer when the band was formed by Bob Marley in the 1970s. Following the death of Marley in 1981 The Wailers continued touring as a major concert draw and the lawsuit says they earned about $1 million annually in concert ticket sales during the period of time that Reid was contracted to promote them.

Feeling shafted, Reid outlined in the suit that he has acted as promoter to the band from 1998 until 2006, when he says the performance fees tripled under his direction. He increased their visibility by booking them with acts such as Santana, the Allman Brothers, Sting and other major acts, but he said his 10 percent was not forthcoming and he has never been able to collect it.

Claiming to have been a huge supporter of The Wailers, Reid also says in the suit that he has fronted money to the tune of about $1.2 million for band salaries, hotel rooms, airfares and equipment. Reid said in the suit that band profits didn’t always benefit all the members, as Barrett and Miller have lived lavishly on money slated for band expenses and government taxes and so on.

According to the report, the suit says Miller and Barrett live in Centreville, Maryland and run a business called Bamboula 8. They have seven children and cannot be reached as their public phones have been disconnected.

A Norfolk attorney representing The Wailers and Barrett, Richard Ottinger, has not commented on the case, but has said the defendants deny all allegations outlined in the lawsuit.

As the owner of The NorVa, Reid had The Wailers play at his Norfolk, Virginia venue several times a year. They have not been featured there in the past two years, since the disagreement began. Lately Reid has been representing and an offshoot group that has emerged with two former Wailers’ guitarists at the helm, who call themselves The Original Wailers; and they now frequently appear at The NorVa, where Jewish reggae sensation Matisyahu will be featured tomorrow night.

Next week is restaurant week in Jamaica and it marks the annual hoopla around culinary exquisiteness on the island.

The art of tantalizing palates has been perfected time and again by Jamaica’s gifted chefs who pull out all stops in celebrating restaurant week. Yardflex dropped in on Whitebones Seafood Restaurant on Constant Spring Road where founders Richard Elliot and Jacqueline Wilson serve up matchless and succulent meals from the sea; and they are ‘rearing to go’.

Their preparations are in full swing and they’ve been steadily getting the word out to their huge clientele of seafood lovers since some added excitement is in store for diners at Whitebones.

Elliot and Wilson, whose restaurant is a favorite of Jamaica’s ‘celebs’ – have decided to augment the regular Shell Night Tuesdays. The usual outdoor cook-up of all shell foods like: lobster, oyster, conch, shrimp, crab and mussels will soon be merged with added live entertainment.

This is one of several new initiatives to be presented by Whitebones and the new Shell Tuesdays will commence right after restaurant week, on November 18, 2008.

Restaurant week is known as the time for all kitchens to shine and show off their specialties and unique styles of preparing regular dishes. Get out and eat to your hearts content.

Old folk say the time eventually comes when many memorial services become the order of the day. Well for Jamaican music veterans, it appears to be that appointed time these days.

Soon after laying one musical hero to rest another has passed on. We now regret deeply to announce the passing of Byron Lee.

Byron Lee, who had been battling transitional cell and bladder cancer, succumbed to the debilitating disease this morning at the Tony Thwaites Wing of the University Hospital of The West Indies. He was flown in from a Miami treatment center recently and was also awarded the Order of Jamaica for his magnanimous stance as a businessman and musician who continually put Jamaica, the Caribbean and its culture all over the map for more than 50 years.

Forming the band Byron Lee and the Dragonaires around 1950 with school mate Carl Brady, the St Georges College old boy played private parties at first and soon became a fixture on the hotel circuit. From there the band’s development brought them fame as a top backing band for visiting R&B and rock and roll artists from the US. Priding themselves with being able to play any genre of music, The Dragonaires soon became the vehicle for sounding off Jamaica’s new beats; the ska, rock steady and reggae around the world; and they eventually embraced soca and calypso for their repertoire.

Over the years The Dragonaires have backed icons like: the Blues Busters, The Charmers, The Maytals, Stranger Cole and Ken Booth and was credited with initiating the reggae-soca style of music after putting out the 1990 hit, “Dancehall Soca” with Admiral Bailey. Byron Lee and The Dragonaires have a discography that is laden with about 59 albums including a 1999 release called, “Jump for Jesus.”

Yardflex extends heartfelt condolences to the entire family and all who loved this great man who has made his country Jamaica extremely proud.

Alton Ellis went home to a lively send off yesterday morning as hundreds of people attended the overflowing St Andrews Scotts Kirk United Church in Kingston, to pay their respects to ‘Mr. Rock Steady’ – Jamaica’s pioneering musical soul.

Although scheduled to begin at 11:00am, the tributes could not be contained and the Fab 5 band got on the ball, playing the song, “Rock Steady” at 10:30am.

People could be heard gently humming the rifts of, “…shake your head, rock yu body line, shake your shoulder everything in time, and see, oh oh oh oh oh oh…” – while Jamaican music stalwarts filed into the church.

It was quite the celebration of an iconic life; one possibly filled with as many memories as Alton left for all who have known and loved his music over the years. Nostalgia joined hands with emotion and praise, and the St Andrews Scotts Kirk became transformed into a spiritual showcase featuring Reggae’s top stars.

Along with family and close friends, Alton’s peers, government and business officials and the proverbial who’s who in Jamaican music were in attendance. The crowd was not able to be contained in the church and big screens and seats were provided for those outside.

Taking the microphone in turn, artists like: Dwight Pickney, Winston Francis, Tinga Stewart, George Nooks, Dennis Alcapone, Tony Geregory, Ken Booth, Judy Mowatt, Bagga Case, Carlene Davis, Bongo Herman and Bunny & Scully, gave their all – singing and infusing a spirit of rejoicing for the long and fruitful life led by Alton.

Alton’s son and daughter also gave a resounding rendition that was magnificent and spoken of as the highlight that day.

Tears were not an issue at St Andrews Scotts Kirk; there was just so much rejoicing, singing, dancing and praise for a beloved and remarkable soul that was laid to rest.

Interment was at the Dovecot Memorial Park.

Omar Davis, L.A. Lewis, Babsy Grange, King Jammys and Dean Fraser were among the many prominent Jamaicans in attendance.

“I was born with a gift and when you have a gift you have to use it,” Cocoa Tea told Yardflex recently; and he has certainly put his talents on the drawing board to boost the visibility and heighten the possibilities of Barack Obama becoming the United States’ 44th President.

Following Obama’s win at the Democratic Convention that saw him take that giant step towards the White House top seat, Cocoa Tea became inspired to chant the praises of this great man who is spoken of as being the most powerful voice out of Africa in this era, after Mandela. Born of Kenyan as well as ‘Cherokee, English and Irish’ lineage, Obama has emerged as what has been termed the American dream by many, including musicians like Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen, Jay-Z, T.I. and of course Cocoa Tea.

In Florida today to not only experience first hand the historical US elections, but also to launch his latest CD, “Yes We Can” that features the song, “Barack Obama,” Cocoa Tea said, “We wanted to be in line with history…the album is historical and our release party in Miami will also be on November 4th.”

Musicians have for years been a strong influence on their audiences and at this time many reflect on the driving force that reggae became more than a decade ago when its one drop up beat rhythms rang out across the world in support of freedom for the great and longsuffering Nelson Mandela and for change to apartheid laws.

Today the custom of singing out for justice continues and Cocoa Tea said he wrote the song in honor of Barack Obama because of the message Obama is bringing to the ‘fold’ right now. Among other things he is for peace and equality. “He talks about spreading the wealth around…we have to spread wealth and give to the less fortunate. He talks of stopping the war and that’s some of the reasons why I am supporting him,” Cocoa Tea expounded.

Of course Obama’s campaign strategists were eager to find out how folk from the Caribbean were responding to the President hopeful and Cocoa Tea said that they have been thankful for the support. He received accolades for having penned the song about Obama from people of the democratic camp, like Una Clarke.

This is Cocoa Tea’s 24th album and he told Yardflex, “I think this is one of the best.” Besides the focus on Obama, the album has collaborations with Marcia Griffiths, Sizzla, President Brown and the scarce but still ranking, Shabba Ranks, with whom Cocoa Tea has done many combination hit tunes in the past.

Born ‘on the beach’ in Rocky Point, Clarendon, Cocoa Tea says he honed his skills as a young man; by singing in church and school concerts, singing incessantly on the road as he walked and working various sound systems at nightly dances in the 1970s.

His latest album is proof that he is a musical force to be reckoned with and Cocoa Tea calls it, “The type of album that when you put it on, you will want to play it all day long, because it is not boring, but full of life.” Giving a further sneak peek into the album’s content, Cocoa Tea said, “There is a song called “I Swear” that will have every man running out to get a copy of this album for their ladies.”

Following today’s Miami release party, “Yes We Can” will be released in New York as well as in Kingston at The Pegasus Hotel. The album is on Cocoa Tea’s Roaring Lion label and is available online and in stores today at I-Tunes and www.cocoateabarackobama.com.

Virgin Atlantic, the airline run by Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, reported last Friday that they have issued letters of termination to 13 of its cabin staff following complaints about remarks they posted on their Facebook profiles

The sacked 13 were accused of being insubordinate in that they exhibited inappropriate behavior in taking the decision to criticize Virgin Atlantic and some of its passengers on Facebook, the immensely popular social networking website.

Virgin Atlantic has spoken of the 13 cabin crew members as having ‘brought the company into disrepute.’

There was a full investigation that unveiled Facebook discussions amongst the 13 that focused on disrespecting the passengers, who were thrashed verbally and even called cockroaches.

Virgin officials said in a statement that while there is a time and place to interact with Facebook, using it as a tool to be offensive to the very body that provides the airline staff’s salaries, is not justifiable.

The statement said participating staff would not have been able to hold such negative views as the ones they posted on Facebook and still uphold the expected customer service standards.

An accidental shooting in Havendale, St. Andrew on Saturday night left shockwaves of

grief and disbelief throughout the island and particularly at Immaculate Conception High School.

Head Girl Pia Phillips died on Sunday morning in hospital after her dad accidentally shot her. He was heading out the door of their middle class home to answer the screams coming from Pia and her mom who were being confronted by gunmen.

Spoken of as a brilliant young lady, Pia is said to have touched those who new her in a special way. Her entire family is completely is in dismay. Many at Immaculate Conception: students and former teachers of hers as well as community members and government officials have spent the hours since the news of her passing broke, consoling each other.

Reports say that the unfortunate incident began to unfold as soon as Pia and her mother arrived home from a choir practice.

As they started towards their house, gunmen alighted from a car, demanding they come to them.

Alerted by the terrifying shouts for help, Pia’s father, who has a licensed firearm, grabbed his gun and while going towards the trouble, he slipped, causing the gun to go off – hitting his 18 year-old daughter in her abdomen.

Many relatives and others came together to in an attempt to comfort the family. With these horrifying circumstances resting on their minds, psychiatrists have already suggested the immediate family seeks counseling – especially her father who will undoubtedly suffer from feelings of guilt.

Violence against women and girls has once again come to the forefront and after expressing her sympathy to family members, Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports, Olivia Grange reportedly lamented at the alarming recurring incidences where young women are being victimized.

Hedonism III in Runaway Bay was jamming on Friday night with what has become a tradition for many travelers from far and wide who converge on the dazzling resort each October 31st for Halloween in the sun.

“We come every year,” a couple from Europe exclaimed as they admired the extremely creative setting and full house of people decked in a wide array of fabulous costumes. There’s was simple but highly artistic body paints done by air brushing; which was quite popular amongst attendees.

Earlier that day guests were very resourceful in decorating their hotel rooms, using all types of ingenious designs and themes. This was the first competition of the day and the best decorated room won a three night stay at Hedonism III Runaway Bay.

Nichel Lindsay, director of entertainment at Hedonism III put the entire event together with his illustrious flair for making things thrilling and exciting. Staff performed an exceptional dance number to Rihanna’s “Disturbia” that was also choreographed by a staff member. The talent and presentation was just amazing.

Following the competition, Hedonism III’s night club was off the chain.

What a heated, rocking night it was as the Halloween extravaganza seemed to take on a life of its own with all manner of ‘beings’ parading their costumes and in turn their wild and sometimes zany imaginations. Judges were on hand to pick the best of the lot and as usual Hedonism III invited some of Jamaica’s prominent and critical eyes; they included: the General Manager of Breezes Resorts and Yardflex’ own Publisher. Categories included: Most Original, Best Couple and Most Scary costumes.

Costumes ranged from the socket and bolt that a couple devised - with the woman being the socket; a Palin and McCain duo who put on a dominatrix routine; Adam and Eve who wore very small amounts of ’leaves’; a robot couple with “Welcome To Hedonism III’ on their computer screens; Josephine and Napoleon; a pimp with his ‘hoe’ and the couple who won in the Most Scary category – the exorcist priest and his partner the possessed woman.

Winners from each category won the highly coveted prize of a five night stay at Hedonism III with second and third runners up receiving three night stays each.

Advocacy group Bahamas Against Crime (BAC) got their way this weekend, when dancehall superstar Movado was denied entry into The Bahamas where he was slated to appear at the 8th annual Millennium Countdown Concert there. The four day major event started on October 30 and ended on the 2nd of November at the Queen Elizabeth Sports Center.

Earlier this month the group BAC sounded an alarm through a press release in which they pleaded with Bahamian media, government and the church to “take proper action” in what they spoke of as “an upcoming event that is poised to squander hard-earned gains in The Bahamas’ struggle to contain and reduce crime.” BAC pointed out that they took particular offence to Movado being on the bill, since, “his lyrics and persona glorify violence.” They also spoke of Movado’s songs as having sexually explicit lyrics.

The release said, "The last thing our people, especially our impressionable youth, should be exposed to are songs, dance, and simulated acts of murder, mayhem and the "gansta" lifestyle, projected and glorified by these influential individuals, in an environment of high energy lubricated by alcohol and drugs."

Promoters Sigma Management and Downsound Records combined their efforts to organize and stage the event in New Providence, with a completely different perception; as their only aim was to provide something for everyone, with the wide variety of stellar acts booked.

With the BAC utterly unaware of the positive implications of artists communicating the world’s realisms, be they sour or sweet; and the age old reality that dancehall dj’ing, rap and hip hop is documentary - they brought pressure to bear on authorities who sprung a surprise on Movado, his management and the show’s promoters as the DJ arrived in their country.

The event was promoted heavily overseas with the intention of attracting many international guests and tourists to The Bahamas. Promoter Frank Forbes of Sigma Management told The Nassau Guardian, “A key focus is that everyone must win from this major undertaking.”

Everyone but Mavado and his team that is, since they certainly lost their valuable time; as they could have been forewarned by Bahamian authorities before leaving Jamaica.

Others appearing over the weekend included: Keisha Cole, Morgan Heritage, Queen Ifrica, Tony Rebel, Jah Cure, Brian McKnight and Etana.

Tonight is the closing night and performers like: Yolanda Adams, Donnie McClurking and Landlord will appear.

The new clothing line, ‘Gully Side Wear’ coming out of Cassava Piece is not one initiated only by Movado as formerly reported, but the top dancehall artist has given his stamp of approval and supports the initiative that according to The Star is a community effort.

‘Gully Side Wear’ is set to be launched in December at Movado’s birthday celebration; officially releasing the line that has benefited the community of Cassava Piece by providing jobs for some. It will be the culmination of a great deal of strategic planning and hard work that started about a year ago. Designer Franklin Garnett and Movado’s sister, Joey Brooks have been at the helm in developing the entire entity, Movado told The Star.

Named after Movado’s hit “Gully Side” the line includes T-shirts, baby Ts, cotton shorts, caps and bags of various designs. ‘Gully Side’ is a registered trademark and tobacco rolling paper will be another production of that brand.

Franklin explained that he designed the items and Movado supports him. He said they both came up with the idea to roll out this production line with products that sell for J$1500 and up.

‘Gully Side Wear’ enterprises serves to get all fashion conscious folk fabulously clad and it will also highlight the talent and business acumen amongst members of the Cassava Piece community while promoting economic development there.

Prudently looking forward, Movado told The Star, "Dis will benefit the whole community by providing jobs fi de youth dem. De whole Jamaica is a gully side and wi a go tek it as far as we can tek it."

Early elections are in full swing and T.I. showed off his stickered thumb on Tuesday proving that he cast his vote.

As the national spokesperson for the nonpartisan group Respect My Vote's "Get Out the Vote" campaign, the 28 year old Clifford “T.I.” Harris has been highly engaged in encouraging youth to exercise their right to vote.

According to a press release from his camp, this is the first year that the number one rapper has voted and his advocacies highlight the fact that nothing should be a barrier for anyone getting out to the polls.

T.I., who has had prior difficulties with the law and is actually slated to do some prison time next year for felony gun charges, said in the release, “Feels like I’ve taken advantage of my right to become a part of the democracy.” Getting to that point took a bit of research on his part to find out if indeed he was eligible, considering his legal bind.

Since T.I. is not currently either incarcerated or on probation – even though he is under house arrest, he was deemed eligible to vote through loopholes in Georgia law.

A year ago T.I. was arrested just before headlining at the BET Hip Hop Awards and charged with unregistered arms possession that included silencers. A guilty plea in May was a part of a plea bargain
