It was a 'Happy Birthday' and 'Goodbye from the Reggae Music Biz' celebration for Mr. Vegas last night at the Hope Road location of TGI Fridays.

Decked with party frills the restaurant was packed with many from the reggae music fraternity, family and friends. Mr. Vegas was thrown this surprise bash by his soon to be former management team, Irish and Chin; and while joy was definitely in the air, there was a heaviness of spirit vocalized by the few who paid tribute and supported by onlookers, most of whom are still in shock at Vegas' decision to retire.

Determined to change his mind even as they support him, some of Vegas' closest friends/colleagues expressed moving words that got unanimous 'amens'. One statement repeated over and over called for Vegas to reconsider the retirement idea. "Its been a long road, its been beautiful...just two more years mi brethren..." his manager Gary Chin said, as he spoke of how much he appreciated the long and solid relationship the two had built up over the years.

Beenie Man, who rolled in a little late, took the floor and paid tribute to Vegas who he empathised with wholeheartedly, saying that his decision to retire is one that many artists consider often without following through on the thought. Still Beenie gently threw spokes at Vegas' retirement; and as was the case with others it appeared as if all opposition on that count came from a sentimental place in Vegas' friends hearts. Beenie continued, "You are mi artist and mi love you to mi heart, but mi no inna de resign ting. You love your family more than life and fe dat mi have fe respect you."

Vegas was very happy at the outpouring of love in the room and spoke of his appreciation for the turnout and event as well as the reasons he decided to step away from music at this time. "God controls my destiny," Vegas said. "I can't gain the world and lose my soul. Money can't replace seeing my mom three times for the year or seeing my children only a few times per month. I also want to be closer to God," he continued.

Ms Jenny Jenny from RJR hosted the evening and livened things up with her wit. TGI Fridays served some of their regular delicious menu hits that were printed on a souvenir menu with Vegas' image on it.

And of course all the stars were out and shining, including: Etana, Alaine, Lady Saw, Spragga Benz, Don Corleon, DJ Sunshine, D'Angel and many more.

"I'm here to represent the family, Mommy and Daddy and everyone loves you," a family member said; and the entire room echoed her sentiment.

Waterford High School in Portmore, St Catherine was stop two on the Inseason Juice KLAS High School Tour that is weaving its way across Jamaica bringing sports, the arts and an abundance of inspiration to the country's most impressionable minds.

Tony Young of KLAS fm Sports Radio had a great time hosting the event last week, especially when interacting with students during contests; and was pleased at every occasion to sing the praises of Waterford High. These were unveiled by not only the school's Principal, Mrs. Cecile Bernard, but also head girl Jody Ann Chin. Both were proud to reveal Waterford students' accomplishments and the great strides the school has made in its 30 year history.

With the live KLAS broadcast twist that facilitates inviting radio listeners to the tour proceedings, many across the island were able to appreciate the wonderful work taking place at Waterford High. Mrs. Bernard spoke of the upcoming 30th anniversary in January 2009 for which a special church service will be held as well as a celebrity day, parents extravaganza and awards banquet. She honored outstanding students in last year's CXC examinations for which Waterford had a 98% of passes. Desmond Wellington, Chantal Swaby and Theiodore Lee were mentioned for having been successful in eight, seven and seven subjects respectively.

On the sports side of things - all school houses have famous athletes' names: Michael Holding, Herb McKinley, Merlene Ottey and Donald Quarry; and Waterford's Manning Cup football team placed third last year.

The school's dramatic arts was showcased as the drama group presented a short poem entitled, "Waterford Turn 30" written and presented by Ms. Nicole Williams, head of the performing arts department. Another poem, "High School" was performed by the drama group that was coached by Mr. Balfour Anderson who also wrote the piece and has led the school to winning numerous medals in the JCDC annual cultural competitions.

Waterford High boasts a full fledged steel band led by Ms. Grant who is a member of the Caribbean Regal Steel Orchestra that gave a solid set; and it was complemented by the award winning school choir singing "You Raise Up" - a song arranged by classical pianist, Mr. Michael Humphrey.

More talented Waterford students took to the stage as there was a call for the best 'Gully Creeper' dancer to step up and show their stuff. Popular student voting decided the winner and it was a lot of fun. Prizes, donated by Addidas, KLAS and Yardflex were also given to students who could talk about when the school was formed.

Student performances were rocking as the school's Dance Troop performed a piece choreographed by Mr. Floyd Carson, a member of the Portmore Dancers who won the 2007 Dancing Dynamite Competition and through who the school has received a great deal of recognition

Resident 'school tour' DJ, Kat had the place stirred with his juggling, but the great uproar happened when guest artist One Third set the school on fire. Not only was their performance off the wall, but the students also went beserk, mobbing the group for autographs and pictures afterwards.

Anthony Cruz made a huge impact as he had the audience chanting along with him all the way from the time he hit the first notes of "Half Way Tree". The excitement continued during Nesbeth's set, who also had a chorus of students echoing his every lyric. After singing a few of his hits he closed with "Guns Out This Morning" and requested the students sing "Books Out This Morning - Teacher coming again..."

It was a fitting end to another 'stay in school tour' date that brought the Inseason Juice drinking competition and much laughter and togetherness. Sponsors, Inseason Juice, Hype TV, Addidas, Yardflex and KLAS were lauded for their efforts once more.

Cherine Anderson is making giant waves in the world of music and her sound is being gobbled up by music lovers everywhere. Fresh from a very successful tour in early September where she worked US stages with Slightly Stoopid and Sly & Robbie, Cherine is off again to join up this time with Michael Franti and Spearhead as they head out to tour Australiin support of the singer/activist's latest album, "All Rebel Rockers".

Spoken of widely as a complement to every artist she opens up for, Cherine has been featured on Spearhead's latest album in three songs and will not only serve as opening act, but also as a featured artist during the Spearhead set.

A rising dancehall diva, Cherine is creating more than a buzz in all corners of the world. Her powerful voice has been likened to Lauryn Hill with a bit more funk and this excellent vocal range will continue to take her soaring to higher heights.

The first single on Spearhead's "All Rebel Rockers," "Say Hey (I Love You)" features Cherine and it gets huge radio rotation, as well as being the background for advertisements for CW and E! Entertainment networks. Her upcoming EP titled "The Introduction-Dubstyle" features songs that are very well received and we can look out for Cherine in the video for Spearhead's next single, "Little Bit of Riddim" - for which Ras Kassa shot the video on location in Jamaica.

The movie “What Goes Around” - directed by Steve ‘Tehut-Nine’ McAlpin, will have its Canadian premiere on October 9, 2008 in Toronto.
Presented by Jaydees Entertainment in association with L3 Publicity, the movie that has been described as a hit - following its US premiere in August, features some of dancehall’s hugest stars: Mavado, Nohard Grant, Flippa Maffia, KC Jockey, Ghost Teflon, Supa Twitch, Ding Dong and Maestro.
With a different take on the old saying, “you reap what you sow,” the movie that was also written by McAlpin, presents the twists and turns of romantic relationships that highlight the proverbial womanizer, absentee father, unfaithful girlfriend and cheating ‘playboy’ lover. Layered with humour, the film takes viewers through the rugged ups and downs of each character. Emotions run rampant as some of the colourful characters deserve sympathy while others stir up anger and trigger suspense.
It is presented against the backdrop of Southern Florida’s Caribbean/American music scene and also features Sakina Samuda, Kim Goss and Alton Ashman.
The movie will be shown for one night only on Thursday October 9th, 2008 at 7pm and 9pm at the Yorkdale Silver City Movie Theatre at 3401 Dufferin Street in Toronto.

Adamant that justice must be achieved, a female police officer is sticking to her guns in filing rape charges against a colleague of hers who allegedly sexually abused her while they worked together on duty.
Telling horror stories of rampant sexual inappropriate behaviour within the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), the female cop explained to The Gleaner that her ‘hellish’ ordeal of being raped was the climax of a long experience with sexual harassment that started from the beginning of the eight month training programme at Police Training School.
While quick to point out that the Twickenham Park, St Catherine-based school has some excellent instructors, the decent ones were outnumbered, according to the female officer, by those who did indiscreet things like offer sex in exchange for favourable training outcomes.
Although it was difficult to be teased and jeered constantly, because of her stance to be strictly ‘no-nonsense’ in regards to the sexual advances of her male colleagues, the female officer stuck to her guns and pursued her goal of being a police officer with high integrity.
Then on the night before Hurricane Gustav, this officer was forced to have sex with a colleague who brutally ignored her pleas for him to stop.
After reporting the incident and following proper procedures of getting medical examinations and having evidence collected, the officer experienced further contemptuous reactions from colleagues who disagreed with her decision to file criminal charges on one of their “squaddy” [squad members].

The female officer reported feeling isolated and unsupported after reporting the incident and even has times when she senses some superiors are trying to intimidate her.
Last week however, some progress was reported, as the police officer in question was arrested and charged with an alleged rape. He has been interviewed and a ruling from public prosecutions is pending.
The female officer is now receiving the full support of the JCF and has been reassigned, while senior enforcement officers condemn the entire situation.

Alicia Keys not the cause of Swizz Beats’ marital woes
Swizz Beats came forward recently with comments that squashed the vicious rumours claiming Alicia Keys was responsible for his marital problems.
Reportedly separated from his wife Mashonda for unmentioned reasons, Swizz told US Magazine that besides going through the worse experience in his life, he also has to put up with rumours that implicate a good friend.
“I can no longer ignore the harmful rumours, that my friend Alicia Keys is in any way linked to my marital circumstances or to the decision that Mashonda and I have made to separate. I am disappointed that some have chosen to try and tarnish Alicia’s reputation by irresponsibly implicating her in a situation that she has absolutely nothing to do with.”
Swizz has pleaded for respect for his privacy in this matter.

Jah Cure wants to keep ‘expecting father’ status quiet
Mr ‘Longing For’ – Jah Cure, has a blessed bundle of joy on the way, but he seems to be peeved that 20 year old Gardinia is insistent on blabbing the news to anyone who will listen.
Wanting to keep this bit of his life private, Jah Cure is constantly at odds with his expected child’s mom who he blames for spreading the news.
Gardinia however, has told Yardflex sources that she is not having a happy pregnancy, since many people are harassing her as a result of her being pregnant for Jah Cure. Besides being heckled at times, the ‘cute party girl’ has also had the word ‘slut’ written on her Oaklands apartment door; allegedly by some jealous and irate female fans.
“I can’t stand him no more – he called me talking crap...” Gardinia told our source who also said Jah Cure denied the child was his at first – considering its mom’s affinity for the party scene. However, he has no choice now but to acknowledge what he knows deep down is a reality, the source said.
We a wonder what is wrong with young girls...why are they terrorizing Gardinia? They need to leave her alone.

A new generation of border security screening has surfaced within Homeland Security; and testing of an innovative search mechanism that can read your mind is currently underway.

The body scanner type device is a system called Malintent and as opposed to screening machines that look for metals and explosives, this one is programmed to detect a person's intentions; and can determine whether someone is out to terrorize or be a dangerous nuisance. Searching the human body for non-verbal cues, this brainchild of Homeland Security's Human Factors division is able to foretell any individual's menacing intentions to hurt fellow passengers.

With the sensors and equipment for reading body temperature, heart rate and respiration levels, all packaged in a mobile laboratory around the size of a trailer truck, this is no polygraph test. There are no wires or straps; the series of sensors and images operate like an 'X-ray for bad thoughts'.

Malintent was put to a field test in Maryland where 144 people were scanned; most of them unknowingly. The average DC area residents were told they were attending a tech expo. Rigorous safety tests were done on subjects to prevent any physical or emotional harm following the tests.

How it works is - warning signs are transmitted to analysts when the sensors identify that something is not right with a subject. That person is flagged and sent to a second screening involving micro-facial scanning of minute muscle movement in the face, that measure mood and intention. Seven main emotions and emotional cues can be measured by DHS and these are reflected in the contractions of facial muscles.

If a passenger is rushed or stressed this mobile lab called "Future Attribute Screening Technology" or FAST won’t be fooled, as it can tell the difference between bad guys and a rushed and nervous traveler - even if one sweats a lot naturally.

Never before has a comprehensive screening device such as this one, been put together and while some politicians score it as a home run, some question privacy issues with this invasive scanner that gets a chance to clock all ones vitals.

DHS has however declared that data scanned is immediately dumped and not maintained. It is also unable to track who you are.

Screening technology will further develop with the eye scanner planned for release next year and pheromone-reading technology by 2010. Equipment that reads body movements will also soon be added

As the new school year gets underway, so does the annual stay in school tour produced by KLAS Sports Radio and other sponsors including main supporter, Inseason Juice. With the aim of encouraging stick-to-it-ism within a segment of the population that is most vulnerable, producers launched the High School tour that brings together sports and entertainment as a vehicle for modeling the way to success.

Concert stops from school to school across the island bring students up close and personal with some of their favorite performing artists as well as some famous sports personalities. Tony Young from KLAS hosts each concert that is simultaneously broadcast live on KLAS fm. Schools’ sports programmes are usually highlighted, bringing achievements and plans to the public.

This year’s tour kicked off on Thursday September 16 at Belair High School in Mandeville. Founded 40 years ago by a Bauxite company, Belair was described by principal Ms. Jerome King as one of Jamaica’s best schools with educators and auxiliary staff who were also exemplary. Recently Belair became the school with the best Jamaican under 17 badminton player.

As is customary the school’s entertainment segment opened up the artistic proceedings that followed interviews with student leaders like: head girl, Lisa Otultz, Elvis, Oliphant, Gillian Chen and Ranel Robinson. Mr. Jean, who teaches at Belair gave a beautiful rendition on guitar and it was followed by the grade 3 students from Belair Prep School who sang a French song.

Others from Belair entertained the very responsive audience who particularly enjoyed Tyrone Carter and Mario David’s dub poetry, Ms. Keisha Wright’s rendition of the song “Hero” and Tara Moxam whose glorious voice did justice to an Etana original.

With immense pride Principal King announced that Belair was Sean Paul’s alma mater. She also spoke of upcoming fundraising plans that will benefit Haitians detrimentally affected by recent hurricane disaster.

The Inseason Juice ‘Drink Off’ as well as the popular dance competition were both hits, with staff and students partaking in the fun.

As guest artists took to the stage, the audience became more lively, exploding in some instances as singers like: Digicel’s former Rising Star winners - One Third, Tony Williams from California and veteran performer, Anthony Cruz gave their all.

All sponsors – Inseason Juice; KLAS fm; Hype TV; Addidas and Yardflex Inc. were lauded for sustaining this project.

General Secretary of the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP), Karl Samuda fired off criticisms at the recently re-elected opposition party president Portia Simpson Miller for labeling his party as ‘uncaring’.

After winning over her party-mate and opponent Dr Peter Phillips, Simpson Miller vowed to strengthen the Peoples National Party (PNP) with the aims of overturning what she called its “uncaring…” opposition in any upcoming general election.

Explaining to the The Gleaner recently that Simpson Miller’s comments were irresponsible, Samuda noted her manner was typical of her leadership style and further stated that despite having retained her job, Simpson Miller and her party will remain the opposition.

On May 24 this year a Chris Godfinger interview with Beenie Man was posted to Youtube and in it Beenie Man spoke negatively of his child’s mom in England saying, “Mi baby-mother is a kind of careless woman…Mi get a son a England which me neva know bout but mi know bout him now.”

Shezal Laing, who is reportedly the child’s mom in England who filed for child support from Beenie Man posted a video on September 19 responding, and it is entitled 'Beenie Man, mother of child responds to his lies' – where she creatively uses text, photos and Buz Luhrmann's tune, “Wear Sunscreen” to respond to what she calls Beenie’s lies.

Laing claims in the video that Beenie Man has not paid attention to his son and that when he reaches out his arms it is her and not the DJ that the boy is reaching for.

Still photos with a red suit clad Beenie Man bottle feeding his son grace the video’s cover page and as the child, who is now six years old, grows – the images are happy ones with just his mom and him.

Laing even ridicules the ace DJ, making cynical comments about his appearance and ends the video with a final scene that demands child support payment.

"Pay the money you owe me and never, ever mention me or my child again," the video ends.

Thursday September 25; Kingston, Jamaica: When Shaggy took the stage at 1:30am Sunday morning there was little more he could to raise the tempo of a concert that had took the 45,000 William Knibb crowd by storm. The No Joke Entertainment produced Usain Bolt Homecoming celebrations fulfilled expectations beyond measure.

"The show was exquisite, we had high hopes but these were exceeded by the outpouring of support from the community of Sherwood Content and Surrounding areas. The artistes turned out and so did the dancers and made the show a fitting tribute to Usain." – Mario Lazarre Jnr, CEO No Joke entertainment

The events associated with the Hart Hill Usain Bolt Homecoming began on Friday September 19 with Usain Bolt doing a series of interviews with the international media Including Bryant Gumbel, BET and Vibe Magazine. The celebrations continued on Saturday September 20 with a press conference at the lush Grand Bahia Principe Hotel. There was then a fun day at the Waldensia primary school hosted by Miss Jamaica 2007 Yendi Phillips. The fun day saw the children of Sherwood Content and surrounding communities being treated to rides and a kiddie park. The children also received school supplies from National Meats/Hart Hill and were visited by the big man Usain Bolt before the end of the treat at 3 pm.

With the days' activities coming to an end it was now then time for the night's event to begin. The William Knibb High school was for several days the subject of heightened activity with preparations going at full speed. It was then no surprise when the crowds began to gather at the William Knibb play field, that many were awe struck by the level of preparation that had gone into the venue. The No Joke Entertainment production Team along with the Prosound crew were on point. The outfield was lined by National Meats/Hart Hill Mobile Meal trucks and the back stage was served with some of the most decadent treats from all over the world.

Artistes lined up to take the stage and give blessings to Usain Bolt; the audience's applause reached a crescendo when Bolt Joined Ice, Ding Dong and Ravers Clavers in a dancing frenzy in front of an appreciative crowd that railed every step of the way.

Several artistes then came on stage and presented what can be considered one of the best stage shows Trelawny has ever seen. D'Angel gave what some believe was her best performance of the year; RDX brought added energy to the tens of thousands gathered. Wayne Marshall was his perennial best, Richie Spice was indomitable and Code Red was a crowd pleaser especially after taking a swipe at Carl Lewis.

When Shaggy exited the stage at 2am Sunday morning and MC for the night and deputy CEO of No Joke Entertainment Candice Buchanan called an end to the live activities of the Hart Hill Usain Bolt Homecoming celebration there was not much more that could have been done musically to celebrate the greatness of Usain Bolt.

Two years and another album, Busy Signal is marking this milestone in the music industry with the release of his latest album entitled, “Loaded.”

It comes two years after his debut album, “Step Out” and lives up to its name with some hard hitting tracks like: “Jail,” “These Are The Days,” “Unknown Number” and the 2008 blazing club hit, “Wine Pon The Edge.” Distributed by VP Records, Busy’s sophomore album has a fantastic blend of new songs and has been on shelves since September 9.

Breaking out on the dancehall scene as a protégé of Bounty Killer, Busy gained huge recognition in 2006 when he became an international household name as a result of his lyrical brilliance.

Buzzing around the world, promoting “Loaded,” has been Busy’s primary preoccupation over recent weeks.

This is the first album released since a change of management saw Busy shift from the Alliance ‘driving force’ Julian Jones-Griffith, to become managed by Shane Brown.

Extortion has reportedly silenced some taxi drivers of Central Village, St Catherine who have been seeped in fear following the recent killing of 29-year-old Christopher 'Tupac' Campbell from what is speculated to being ‘failure to comply with extortionists’ requests’.

“Di man dem serious…mi pay up my money, yu know,” a taxi operator told The Star, as he explained taxi drivers’ predicament of having to pay a ‘road tax’ to heavily armed lawbreakers in that area.

Drivers who have lived in constant fear for months now, told reporters that it is common to fork over from $2,500 to as much as $5,000 weekly to the hoodlums, depending on what relationship they have developed with their oppressors.

Claiming fear for their lives, taxi drivers have not gone to police in the Central Village area with formal complaints, although officers reportedly disclosed having heard of the racket.

Not wanting to be identified as informers, drivers keep on complying with the ruthless extortionists’ demands because according to one driver, “…a man nuh tek informa ting light.”

It’s a family affair with the McGregor reggae clan spearheaded by veteran singer Freddie McGregor, whose offspring have risen to fame - continuing the legacy of the ‘Big Ship” name.

Named after Freddie’s 1981 massive hit, “Big Ship” the family’s musical base is situated on a plush Havendale, St Andrew slope and is the creative mecca for Freddie and his children: 18 year old world renown producer, Stephen McGregor – also known as ‘Di Genius’; 29 year old outstanding songstress Yeshemabeth ‘Shema’ McGregor and Daniel, the popular rapper known as ‘Chino’.

All three children are making waves on the Jamaican and international reggae music scenes; and Stephen, who produces both siblings, is conquering global musical settings with innovative urban/classical productions.

And it is no wonder, as their upbringing by Freddie, who successfully followed a childhood dream of owning his own studio – nurtured the musical McGregors’ innate talent and powerful passion for the art form.

Chino’s poetic fluidity drives his almost abstract style while Shema seems almost cloned from her mother, Judy Mowatt – of Bob Marley’s I Threes – with physical and vocal exquisiteness. Both have been blessed with having Stephen in the family as he has propelled their careers with his huge abilities.

New York’s Hot 97 jock, Bobby Konders recently spoke highly of Stephen saying, “Jamaica has a lot of great producers, but people view him [Stephen] as the new kid carrying the flavor; so young but with a proven track record. He took many different influences from hip-hop and reggae and made them into his own sound. Stephen’s that dude, and he’s a winner.”

While Stephen’s thematically linked rhythms appear on a VP Records compilation, his unique rhythm tracks have extensive life; as is breathed into them by the more than a dozen artists who normally sing over them.

The ‘whiz kid’ fell in love with the studio at a very young age and by 7 years old, had taught himself to play keyboards, bass, guitar and violin. An undisputed exceptional child, Stephen’s abilities surfaced at age 5, when he wrote and released his first song, “School Done Rule.” Since then he has chosen the producer’s hat as the one to wear, and has been very successful in his work with artists like Sean Paul and Vybz Kartel.

Announcing recently that they will no longer be a part of the management team of the annual East Fest, Morgan Heritage says bowing out of the family founded tradition comes after considering the strains it would make on their hectic touring schedule.

East Fest goes on nonetheless, without Morgan Heritage - as the family reportedly took the decision to turn the event over to new management. Making a return last December after its seventh staging, East Fest has become a successful cultural festival that is in line with the Morgan Family beliefs of togetherness and love.

It will be the first time since its inception that the group of Morgan siblings will be absent from the planning tables, however they say the group will be there in spirit. Giving up management of East Fest for even years to come, Morgan Heritage reportedly is holding fast to the hope that all former supporters of the St. Thomas based festival continue showing their support.

Without clearly specifying which telephone company rival they are referring to, Digicel has launched a series of advertisements aimed at resolving being implicated in an ‘illegal telecommunications company practice’ of erecting cell sites without regulated permission.

Claiming that false reports of Digicel cell site erection activity in several communities have become prevalent, the company’s public relations manager said the company does not appreciate being mis-represented by unscrupulous individuals. Patria-Kay Aarons of Digicel reportedly said the guilty company is failing to follow procedures and Digicel condemns their practice.

Digicel is left to pick up the flak, the PR rep feels that the direct attempt at tainting Digicel’s name is disrespectful and concerning.

Mention of a possible telecom war getting ready to rumble have been circulating, but competitive giant Cable And Wireless maintain their lack of involvement saying Digicel should simply disclose the company they refer to in their ads.

"Mus Come a Road" has grasped the #1 spot on Riddim's German Reggae Charts for two weeks. So far, the feedback from fans, DJs and radio personalities alike has been massive.

DJ Shaggy - whose 'greatest hits album' is out in stores now - expressed recently that he would like to collaborate with Robbie Williams and Britney Spears. Taking them out of their sphere of creative comfort is what he wants to do, evoking a dynamic switch in style.

'Mr Boombastic' told the Mirror he would have Britney doing the dutty wine, "Imagine Britney Spears doing a hardcore dancehall record," he said; or "Robbie williams doing an old classic rub-a-dub or something unique."

Pearnel Charles, Minister of Labour and Social Security suggested in Parliament on Tuesday, that 'Dons' should be invited to present their views on the 'anti crime' bill.

As a member of the committee formed to cogitate on the 'anti-crime' bill, Charles contributed his suggestion of who should be given the chance to present before them, as was requested by committee chairperson, Dorothy Lightbourne.

Charles included 'Dons' in his listing of: women's movements, journalists and Jamaicans For Justice. Some committee members were shocked at the idea and minced no words in expressing it. Former Minister of National Security and opposition senator, K.D. Knight said the idea was ridiculous. According to The Gleaner, he was joined by a disgusted Senator A.J. Nicholson who said: "When they invite the dons here, I will not be a part of that discussion."

Trevor MacMillan, National Security Minister has however backed Charles' idea and he reportedly said that as long as they have no criminal record, the 'Dons' have a right to certain things regardless of the usual perception of them.

ZIP FM radio disc jock Nikki Z was suspended for playing a song with a curse word on radio.

Quoted in an interview with the Star she said she was informed of the suspension last Saturday and that there was nothing to talk about except to say that she was sorry about the whole thing.

"I did listen to it (the song) before, a word slipped me and I just didn't hear it. I let down my boss and he had to do what he had to do," Nikki told the Star.

Regarding the suspension it was revealed that Nikki was suspended for an indefinite period which could range from a week to whatever time the company thought was suitable punishment for the deed.

“Go get a job,” T.I. tells his baby moms
Last week it was reported that T.I. was being sued by the mother of his two sons, Lashon Dixon. Claiming she was having a financial crisis and needed money badly, Dixon has filed for more child support.

Not having any of that, T.I. has remained close lipped on the lawsuit. The Rapbasement report disclosed that he has been paying $2.000 monthly to Dixon on top of taking care of all the children’s expenses like: private education, clothing, gifts, food, health insurance and activities like sports and acting lessons.

The rapper was reported as saying, “I provide 100% of their financial support. I should only be judged for my actions and not Lashon’s conscious decision not to work and not to contribute to the financial support of our boys."

He feels Dixon should not try to live only on his payments, but she should get a job.

A 17 year-old young man who was shot and seriously wounded in the chest at a Scarborough, Ontario technical high school yesterday is in critical condition in the Scarborough Sunnybrook Hospital today.
Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair told reporters that at about 11:45am Tuesday morning an incident occurred on the school property in which an altercation between a number of young men resulted in a firearm being discharged and a young man was injured.

Witnesses say there was a scuffle, gun shots and then four men were seen racing away from the scene on foot, disappearing within the surrounding residential area that has a small industrial section.

Worried parents waited for hours some distance away, while police reassured them that things were under control and that the school leaders had acted promptly and in line with procedures. After the shooting police locked down the school and four other schools in the immediate area in their successful effort to keep all the students safe and out of any possible further harm. The students were ‘released’ before 3:00pm and police are continuing their investigations.

According to the CBC news report police say they were looking for one suspect described as "a male, black, 18 to 19 years old, approximately 5-foot-8, and ... last seen going [through] Donwood Park onto Norbury Crescent," according to Const. Wendy Drummond .

Since his court case that ended in June this year with an acquittal on 14 counts of child pornography, R. Kelly has reserved comments on the entire six year ordeal. Tonight however, he is scheduled to appear on BET in his first TV interview since June.

In the session that is slated for 10pm EST, Kelly is expected to chat candidly about the court case experience, his career and naysayers; in the hopes of finding some closure in regards to this hugely blighting segment of his life.

Dubbed, “R. Kelly Speaks,” the one on one interview with Toure will see Kelly responding to the heavy questions about the case and more. According to BET, “Kelly will speak openly about his feelings during and after the trial, the fans he lost along the way, his brother who openly expressed concern about the superstar’s sexual age preference and more.”

Even though the former fastest man in the world, Asafa Powell performed disappointingly at the Beijing Olympics this year, coming in 5th for the 100 meters, while Usain Bolt took the gold in 9.69 seconds; he is adamant about his way forward and speaks confidently about exceeding Bolt’s world record breaking time.

Promising to improve on even his personal best of 9.72 seconds that he clocked in Lausanne, Switzerland shortly after Beijing, Powell told the Gleaner that he is at a very exciting time of his life and is really enjoying sprinting at the moment. “To have someone from Jamaica who's so fast to run against is very exciting. It motivates me to go and train harder than ever before. I'm really excited about it," Powell said.

His personal best in Switzerland recently, sent a strong message to all his challengers; that it is plain to see that he is walking his talk and stepping up to the plate or standard set by Bolt.

Without flinching, Powell declared that he will be right there with Bolt, no matter how fast he takes it.

He has spoken about aiming for a world record run as low as 9.6 and is sure this is a possibility that he has to be ready for. As the only athlete to have run under 10 seconds in about 14 races during a single season, Powell’s victories on the track have been overshadowed by disappointments at the Athens Olympics and the Beijing Games.

Over the weekend rumors began to circulate that Vybz Kartel’s mother and sister had been shot and killed, forcing police to make checks at the artist’s mother’s home to discuss her safety.

Karl Angell, director of communications for the Jamaica Constabulary Force told reporters that he could not give details of the security measures Kartel’s mom was advised to take, neither could she divulge why the police were concerned, but he confirmed that they have urged her to be careful.

While attempts to get a statement from the DJ’s mother ended up on a dead end, reports surfaced that Kartel’s mom and three of her daughters were spotted at church on Sunday morning.

A source close to the family said that there have been security concerns surrounding the mother who has been receiving recent threats. According to the source, as a precautionary measure, Kartel’s mother was advised to change her telephone numbers and not to share the new ones with anyone, She was also advised not to speak with anyone about the situation.

This comes after Vybz Kartel was released from police custody last Friday after being detained since two days earlier, He was questioned about the murder of Christopher ‘Nun Puss’ Miller, whose body was found on August 31 on Goshen Road in Bernard Lodge, St Catherine.

It was reported that since Miller’s death, rumors spread quickly implying that Kartel was somehow involved. However, Kartel said the rumors were started by persons who were trying to smear his name. “A just some people a try mek it look like Kartel a the evilest man inna di world,” he said.

Meanwhile, over the weekend a memorial was held for Father Sticks in the downtown area; and an order was passed down that banned the playing of Vybz Kartel’s tunes.

Fresh from the very successful Tailgate Tour with Slightly Stoopid, Pepper, Sly & Robbie and the Taxi Gang, Cherine not only recently released her latest slamming single, “Talk If Yuh Talking” – she also landed in the spotlight for having been featured in the official remix of Britney Spears’ MTV Video Music Award triple winner, “Piece Of Me.”

Winning Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video Of The Year, “Piece Of Me” is the second single from Spears’ album, “Blackout” and the official remix by Sly &Robbie is soulfully laced with Cherine’s passionate sound.

That same fervor was consistent with Cherine who dominated all 21 stages during the 2008 Tailgate Tour that saw the musicians criss-cross the US going from Santa Barbara, California to St. Augustine, Florida. Selling out at some venues the bands gave audiences more than they bargained for, and the dancehall soul vibe of Cherine was more than a hit.

Cherine penned the confrontational female anthem “Talk If Yuh Talking” and was inspired to write it by the experiences of a friend. The song was well received during Cherine’s set on the tour and will be available on her upcoming EP “The Introduction – Dubstyle.”

Known to give some hardcore music enthusiasts goose-bumps, Cherine’s talent and personality has sent her soaring in the reggae music industry.

Kanye West has certainly been through the wringer with the most recent frustrating issue being his clash with paparzzi at the Los Angeles International Airport last week.

People Magazine has however reported news of a glimmer of light for West, as they say the top rapper/producer has asked his girlfriend, Alexis to marry him.

The magazine cited sources close to West informed them of the marriage proposal to Alexis, who was his girlfriend before his October 2002 near-fatal car crash.

No comment is being made from West’s camp about the proposal. The former Roc-a-Fella producer who rose to fame by his great work – especially following Jay-Z’s album “Blueprint” has never been married.

Inspired by the very serious 2002 car accident, West came forth in 2004 with “The College Dropout” album that featured the single “Through The Wire.” It earned him Grammy awards for best rap album and best rap song.

The upcoming felony rap - for smashing paparazzi cameras - facing West may be avoidable, as reports today explain that his having destroyed only a shooter’s lighting ring worth US$100, sheds a different light on the felony vandalism charges that can only be filed for destroyed property valued at more than US$400. West’s charges could be reduced to a misdemeanor.

“Phenomenon one” – is the sound that has been thrilling Ninja Man fans for years and he has no doubt that this will be the case for all the tomorrows. A marvel in his own right, the veteran Ninja Man has declared that he is coming for Bounty Killer.

It will be the lyrical war of the year and maybe even decade, as the two will hit the stage of New Jersey’s 2008 ReggaeFest on Sunday September 21.

Gearing up for the clash, Ninja – who is better known in the dancehall as the ‘original front teet, gold teet, gun pon teet Don Gorgon’ makes no qualms about his intentions for this weekend’s Reggaefest, as he is determined to verbally annihilate Bounty Killer otherwise known as the ‘Warlord’.

It is bound to be an exciting evening at the Halsey Street Sports Complex in Newark because Ninja has reported that he will not be gracing the stage until Bounty Killer has been also called up. “I am coming for Bounty,” he declared.

Razor sharp lyrics are expected to soar through the air at the upcoming Fest, since Ninja’s extraordinary stage antics coupled with his witty and sly verbal attacks will be going up against a DJ warrior who never backs down from a musical war of words.

Bounty Killer, who is currently on tour in Japan is also extremely notorious for his ‘cross, angry, miserable’ lyrical persona that never minces words when slaughtering opponents in the dancehall. His ‘slicing’ microphone tactics are highly anticipated for the New Jersey ReggaeFest that has been dubbed, “The Year of The Great.”

The on again off again stage rivalry between Ninja Man and Bounty Killer will come to the fore once more, causing the festival in New Jersey to become ‘the year of the great lyrical clash’.

“I am coming for one Rodney Price who a gwaan like people fraid a him…it is about time dancehall people in ‘Merica really get to see somebody lyrically dead pon stage,” Ninja stated. And while the verbal attacks even get personal at times, Ninja maintains that it is only a lyrical fight and there are never hard feelings behind the words.

Chuckling at the idea of the immense fun and entertainment in store for patrons, concert organizer, Casey “G City” Rankine of Road Block Radio said, “Ninja, Bounty and Beenie have been in the industry for well over a decade, they are three of the greatest and this will no doubt be a great display of talent.’

Major reggae acts like: Queen Ifrica, Etana, Demarco, Serani, Barrington Levy, Bugle, Assasin, Filippa Mafia and Jiggy Spoogie are also slated to appear at the New Jersey ReggaeFest.

Carlton Grant Snr., known across the world as Spragga Benz and Sharon Gapoor, today accompanied their son Carlton Grant Jnr. on his final journey.

Laid to rest this morning at a funeral that was very well attended, Carlton Junior, lovingly named Carlyle/Different, was placed in a closed casket with only some family members viewing his body an reacting in utter disdain.

Such a somber occasion it was, as is always the case when a community is faced with the premature passing of its youth. Facial expressions seemingly questioned the tragedy that unfolded at his time of death and the uncertainty of it all resulted in an intensely agonizing aura permeating the entire proceedings.

Weeping openly and even uncontrollably at times, family and friends filed into Our Lady Of Angels Church on Molynes Road at 10:00am. The church quickly filled up with many representatives from the Jamaican and global music fraternities in attendance, including: Nadine Sutherland, Clyde McKenzie, Assassin, Carlene Smith, TOK, Richie Stephens, Copper Cat and Foxy Brown.

An all white dress code was interspersed with Jamaica College (JC) and Camperdown High School uniforms, worn by 17 year-old Carlton’s former school-mates. Described as a bright and well mannered young man, Carlton transferred to Camperdown High School after finishing fourth form at JC.

Spragga Benz rose to the occasion and was able to add his specially scripted song for Carlton to the many musical dedications and other tributes. The choir from Camperdown sang as a teary eyed congregation joined them with hymns like: “Meet Me At The River,” “All To Jesus I Surrender” and “In Your Hands.”

Officiated by the Right Reverend Father Michael Lewis, Carlton’s homegoing ceremony lasted for about an hour and a half. Tributes were offered up by his 6 year-old sister, Chaniel Scott, his cousin, Chantelle Grant as well as his girlfriend, Isheilee Bennett; and another sister Shanice Grant led the attendees in prayer.

Overcome with grieve, Carlton’s mom had to be supported as the funeral procession went on to the Dovecot Cemetery.

Carlton Grant was fatally shot by police bullets on August 24, 2008 and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear as witnesses and police reports are conflicting.

Digicel Rising Stars competition began in 2004 amidst the hoopla of global ‘idol’ frenzy. The popular televised talent search in Jamaica started its fifth season this year with a special brand new twist, that came in the form of a newly appointed show host; the young and extremely animated Yendi Phillipps.

Soon after her arrival, the show that discovered musical stars began to also develop media star quality; as Yendi’s entering the unfamiliar waters of television show hosting thrust her into a process of listening to critiques, learning from her experiences and steadily improving her skills. Taking over from the seasoned Denise Hunt was not an easy task, but rather than let it be an insurmountable obstacle, Yendi set goals that saw her entering into each episode feeling confident that she had improved since the last.

After several weeks of honing her live television hosting skills, Yendi explained that she has become more comfortable in her new position and by all accounts she consistently appeals to her many Jamaican viewers.

Motivated by an earnest love for media and driven by deep-rooted professionalism, Yendi has grown to become one of Jamaica’s better TV hosts. She told reporters recently, “I have always wanted to work in media and the experience with Digicel Rising Stars has taught me how to communicate with a camera, which can be difficult.”

Despite the hurdles, the young and super talented Miss Jamaica World loves the new role, is comfortable with her performance and is especially pleased with her new found ability to relate to a live audience.

With her signature charming and poised style Yendi declared, “I’m having a great time.”

Four days following the highly anticipated Hart Hill Usain Bolt Homecoming event that is scheduled for September 20th at the William Knibb High School, the triple medal world record holder will be whisked off to the United States where he is in high demand within the talk show circuit.

The 22 year-old sprint master, nicknamed ‘Lightning Bolt’ – who made an amazing Olympic triple medal haul at the Beijing Games this summer is being sought by a series of high profile US television shows and has been confirmed to appear on a few of them, while requests keep pouring in from rival programmes.

Bolt’s manager, Norman Peart, who has mentored the track star since he was 15 years old, confirmed that he will be a guest on ‘The Late Show’ with David Letterman on September 24. This will be the first in a new series of appearances for Bolt, who until recently has been attracting audiences at mainly track and field meets.

Peart disclosed that Bolt’s other confirmed appearances include: ‘The Daily Show’ with Jon Stewart on September 25th and then the popular ‘Regis and Kelly Show’ on the 26th.

With no immediate plans to expand the management team, Peart explained that the same team that has been taking care of Bolt’s business since 2003 is capable and poised to continue working with him, even though new demands have unfolded following his amazing Olympic feats.

The world’s new double record holder is not intending on slowing down and he will be presented to billions of eager fans via US talk shows.

“Aloha” is what musical whiz, Irie Love is ready to say to the world as she brings forward her eclectic engaging sound, traversing genres like: reggae, jazz, R&B, soul, hip hop and dancehall.

No stranger to Jamaican and international stages over the past few years, Irie Love continues to follow her passion for music and in October 2008 will release her EP entitled, ”EHIKU” with her debut album, “The Life of LOVE” coming out shortly after in early 2009.

“It Was Me” is her current rocking Stephen McGregor produced single that is listed as ‘one to watch out for’ and its now in rotation in Europe, the UK and many other countries.

Irie Love is the singer’s real name that was inspired by her NFL playing dad’s Jamaican roots and affinity to the Third World hit song, “Iri Ites.” Born in Hawaii with Dutch, English and Native American ancestry, the former WNBA hopeful basketball hard-hitter let destiny take its course, as she wrapped her mind around perfecting her musical talents after a leg injury.

Irie Love is a recent addition – in 2007 - to the Morgan Heritage, Gedion Production Company’s roster; and is the first female to be so signed. Her journey in music has taken her from a first release with Quiet Storm Records of Chaka Khan’s, “Tell Me Something Good” in reggae – to sharing stages with major reggae acts. Opening for artists like: Damian & Julian Marley, Steel Pulse, Michael Rose, Yellow Man and Gregory Isaacs, Irie Love developed a strong stage presence that is currently being showcased as she has been the opening act for the highly requested Morgan Heritage since being signed.

The former Azusa Pacific University music major used all her experiences and training to land gigs singing backup vocals with PINK, David Hollister and Chaka Khan amongst other US based artists. Irie Love was also one of the top 12 contestants going after the winning spot in the 2006 Red Stripe IrieFM Big Break Contest for upcoming artists in Jamaica.

“I want my music to speak for itself,” Irie Love says as she continues to pen her own lyrics and thrill the world with her songs.

All the euphoria surrounding the Olympians performance in Beijing, China seemed to have washed off where the criminal elements in the society is concerned. How soon we forget! Oh that we could still be basking in the joy and pride the Olympians gave us. Now it saddens my heart to be listening to the news again and hearing of death and mayhem in my society.

It's time that all of us as Jamaicans wake up and realise that we have something that's unique; and stop settling. It's no use that athletes like Asafa, Usain, Shelly-Ann and Melaine are placing us on the map and we go ahead and in flip destroy everything they have trained hard to accomplish.

Brand Jamaica is planning a big marketing strategy around their accomplishments, but unless they deal with the sore that is crime in Jamaica, then all their work will be in vain.

We can't try to lure tourists to our beautiful island and they can't feel safe. How can we ask them to come saying 'no problem' when we can't even guarantee that some thugs won't break into their hotel rooms and rob them blind?

Deal with crime. It's time to stop talking about tough measures and actually put measures in place.

It's not just the government's responsibility either, it's everyone's job. The saddest thing in all of this is that men are not the only culprits. Women are actually involved in hold ups and actually shooting people.

So just where do we go from here? It's everyone's task. We can't enjoy the glory if we are not prepared to do our part in protecting the country's image.

Jamaica's Reggae boyz's hopes of securing a place in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa suffered a major blow after they sunk to 2-nil loss to Honduras at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula Honduras on Wednesday Night. And shortly after, Jamaica's coach Rene Simoes was fired.

The SS Reggae Boyz looked well after leaving harbour, in the first few minutes riding the waves and handling the challenge well from their opponents.

Using a five-four-one formation the Rene Simoes led side, were able to string some good passes through the Honduran defense; and with the lone Reggae striker Luton Shelton upfront he got some good through passes but was quickly shut down by a determine backline of the Central American Team.

Jamaica surrendered the midfield on several occasions and the Home team punched a hole in the ship, when a cross in the box was mis-handled by the Jamaican defenders as a fast approaching Ramon Nunez netted the firsts goal of the match shortly after the start of the second half.

Unable to find answers the Jamaicans found themselves on the back foot, as the pace of the Hondurans on the flanks saw Wolery Wolfe and Andy Williams on either side being beaten for pace on countless occasions.

With the Jamaicans losing their footing and scrambling in attack and defense; Goal Keeper Donovan Ricketts pulled down a Honduran player in the box, after he had already beaten two Jamaican defenders. With the Referee pointing to the spot, Amado Guevara made no mistake to put the Central American team up two nil before the final whistle.

In all three changes were made, including the coming on of Jermaine Hue for Andy Williams, but that was to no avail, as by then the ship had taken in too much water.

No one needed to shout, in any form fashion or shape to the Captain Horace Burrell, President of the Jamaica Football Federation that the ship was sinking. As Burrell took the bold step in tossing Simoes and the rest of his crew overboard.

Under Simoes charge the Boys played 11 games, including warm up and qualifiers, winning three, losing three, and five ending in drawn results.

Anthony B will be featured at Earthdance 2008 in Laytonville, Northern California. It takes place September 12, 13 and 14 2008 and is one of more than 300 events put on around the world on September 13 in celebration of peace.

Earthdance, The Global Dance Festival For Peace was founded in 1997 and has emerged as the largest simultaneous dance festival in the world. From New York’s club circuit to Brazil’s rainforest, festival locations have been wide ranging, reaching more than 50 cities in 350 countries.

Aiming at grouping global communities in a concerted effort to further humanitarian causes and promote an environment of world peace, the Earthdance event focuses on creating a synchronized global festival and dance event. At exactly 4pm Pacific Standard Time, each event around the world plays the song, “The Prayer For Peace,” that was specially produced for the occasion.

The Northern California lineup has every type of music from funk with Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk to Digital Planets’ Hip Hop and R&’B. Reggae great, Anthony B is one of few reggae acts booked to appear. Other artists include: Queen Omega, K’Naan and Soul Majestic.

“Mek dem gwan cause nuh baddi nuh betta dan yardie,” an exotic dancer told reporters recently as she scoffed at the idea that Haitian dancers were helping to increase business at a particular night club, as was reported by the club’s owner.

However the reality is that some night clubs in St Ann, St. Catherine and Portland have been featuring a number of Haitian exotic dancers over the past few weeks; and this situation has resulted in a brewing confrontation between Jamaican dancers and the foreigners.

Said to be part of the guns for drugs trade illicit operation, these women are also reportedly coming into Jamaica after paying hefty price tags that go up to US$1,600 just to be able to dance in Jamaican clubs.

Jamaican dancers have been more than disgruntled, claiming the Haitians are undercharging and robbing their customers. Dancing duties for which Jamaican dancers charge J$2,000, go for J$700 with the Haitian exotics. Nervous that the Haitians are attacking their livelihood by attempting to “take over the turf,” Jamaican dancers have been not only become outspoken towards their competition, they are also slamming into the men who patronize them saying they will never get anything better from the Haitian women.

No physical conflict has taken place, but the tension is high, with some clubs reporting that the Jamaican dancers sometimes opt against even sharing the same stage with the Haitians. Besides the Jamaicans’ attempts to dance even more sensually, the Haitians get the biggest applause and the most attention.

Investigations are ongoing, said the head of operation Kingfish who reportedly confirmed that the influx of Haitian women in recent weeks is as a result of the guns for drugs trade.

Beijing OlympicsRealizing that his two major competitors plan to come fast and furious for the next track season in 2009, Usain Bolt has effectively given them a strong warning not to underestimate his abilities next year.

Bolt, now back home in Jamaica, spoke to reporters at a press conference after the glorious motorcade that went from the Norman Manley airport to the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, and said he will be ready and looking forward to competing against Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay next season.

Having taken the world record 100 meter crown in New York during May, Bolt beat his own 9.72 world record mark in Beijing where he clocked 9.69. Conscious of the hard work ahead as he focuses on maintaining his status as the first man since Carl Lewis in 1984 to capture the sprint double at an Olympic games, Bolt said while it took enormous effort to get to the top it will take even harder work to stay at the top.

Bolt said he spoke to both Powell and Gay, letting them know that he will be ready for them next year; and while they will be coming faster, he will be well prepared. “A lot of people know I have a lot more in me,” he stated.

Popular New York media personality, Michelle ‘Micheboo’ Thompson will be hosting a fund raising event at New York’s SOB Night Club and she’ll be supported by veteran artists like: The Meditations, Johnny Osbourne, Michael Palmer and Ed Robinson in a night titled, “Reggae For Justice.”

Taking a stand against police brutality, the concert will be held on Tuesday, September 16 and it is being organized to directly benefit Isus Thompson, the 24 year-old son of Micheboo, who is now suffering at Ward’s Island Psychiatric Center, from major injuries to his head, neck, back and legs following a savage beating at the hands of New York City police officers who hail from the 112th Precinct in Forest Hills, Queens.

Isus was sitting in a playground on Austin Street in Forest Hills on the evening of June 6th, according to Micheboo who said that as he left the park an officer approached him and ordered him not to leave. Isus obeyed and was escorted to a squad car where he was frisked and searched. At that point the officer called for backup, Micheboo explained; and in a panic, Isus ran after insisting he had done nothing wrong.

Isus told his mother that after being cornered - about 10 police officers proceeded to belt out racial slurs while viciously beating him with their fists and nightsticks. After being taken to Elmhurst Hospital he remains there more than three months later in serious physical and psychological condition.

“It’s destroying me to see my son like this,” Micheboo stated, as she explained that his condition wavers; some days he is good and other days he is in a bad way. Mental instability has been one prognosis, as the blows to his head caused some trauma.

Saying that her son Isus was not a troublemaker, Micheboo laments at the savage steps taken by the New York Police in this instance. “Give him a ticket, write him a summons,” she said instead of damaging him physically for being in the park after curfew.

The fundraiser is for assisting in healthcare issues and for the legal battle that lies ahead against the NYPD. Micheboo said all the artists as well as SOB founder, Larry Gold made no hesitation to jump in to give a helping hand.

Dub poet Ras Atiba, singers Kayla Bliss, Charmaine Dacosta of Worl A Girl fame, Empress Trejah, Shango Trex, and Marcia Davis are also donating their services to the benefit event along with NY's famed Ruff Stuff and Cannabis Cup Reggae bands. The event is being sponsored by Keeling Records, WVIP 93.5FM, Uardmanstle Clothing, The Eye Collection Clothing, Riddim Driven/VP Rcords, Katashes, Bary’s Jerk Delight and Ms. Raine Inc.

A Reggae Market Place will also be mounted with merchandise and food provided by Katashes and Barry’s Jerk Delight, for sale. Donations start at $20, with all proceeds going towards Isus.

“To the world,” was the first thing Usain “Lightening” Bolt said as he returned to Jamaica yesterday to a welcome fit for the hero he has become. Bringing home his world record gold medals earned at this summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing, Bolt triggered an eruption of love, pride and immense joy amongst Jamaicans at home and abroad.

Throngs of people waited for him to arrive at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston yesterday afternoon.

As the man who made history in Beijing by winning the 100 and 200 meters in world record time descended from the aircraft, he struck the famous ‘lightening pose’. From the slight lean of the body, finger in the air to one side and the other arm outstretched Bolt paused for a moment before going into a few moves of the ‘Usain Bolt’ dance; completely thrilling the enormous crowd.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding, Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller and Sports Minister Olivia Grange met Bolt as he stepped off the Virgin Atlantic flight yesterday afternoon. A celebration ceremony was held that evening at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, where Bolt got a chance to meet with international press.

Returning ahead of his team mates, the 22 year-old’s welcome acted also as the launching of many activities being arranged by the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports. Prime Minister Golding announced a celebration is slated for October 3rd when all the other Jamaica Olympic team members will return home. It is expected to an elaborate affair with floats, a rally and so on.

The airport yesterday was overly packed with well-wishers and the Prime Minister said he hadn’t seen a motorcade of this type since Nelson Mandela landed in Jamaica.

There were some requests from Bolt’s entourage for increased security at one point, as people were banging on his car. The Prime Minister said Bolt was not in need of security and the gestures were all acts of love. “Jamaica is proud of you as you have proven that we are the best in the world,” the Prime Minster stated. He further said that Usain Bolt was at this moment in greater demand that Barack Obama.

Urging all the athletes to make every effort to go back to their respective regions of Jamaica, the Prime Minister said they should spend time with community members, especially the children in schools.

“Thanks to everyone for your support; I can’t begin to tell you how I feel,” Bolt told reporters and others. “ I am happy to come home and was really looking forward to it.” Bolt vowed to keep Jamaica on top saying he is looking forward to dealing with the challenges involved.

On questions of his intention to donate to any Jamaican charities, Bolt said that his management is working with him to sort all that out and they have not yet made any final plans. His influence on the murderers in the ‘garrisons’ – where crime rates decreased during the Olympics, was questioned and Bolt said - they know it is all about unity now. “I hope they keep the unity and what I want is for everyone to keep everything cool…hold down the war and mek we just deal wid the unity right now.”

Jamaica’s oldest Olympian, Cynthia Thompson, who ran in the 1948 games was on hand along with two other former Olympians – to greet Bolt.

Stewarts added a brand new BMW to the list of well-deserved gifts being showered on the Bolt.

A titlewave of excitement overcame a colossal crowd of 40,000 fans recently when dancehall star Mr. Vegas took center stage at Japan's largest Reggae festival, Yokohama Reggae SAI.

There, the popular artist and his High Energy dancers unleashed a fiery stage performance, which lasted 30 minutes. Mr. Vegas boldly laced the venue with a medley of hits that spanned over a decade. From past chart toppers like "Heads High" and "Go Up" to current smashes "Tek Wey Yuhself" and "Hot Wuk," Mr. Vegas thoroughly entertained the enthusiastic crowd. The dancehall star felt so good mid-way into his performance, that he cataputled himself into the crowd. The fans, who eagerly transported him, didn't seem to mind a bit.

Additionally, given Mr. Vegas' extensive catalogue of music, it was only fair that he amuse his fans with current hits in Japan, "Do You Know" and "Up and Live." In fact, he aptly closed his adrenaline-fueled set with "Up and Live." Mr. Vegas was greeted with loads of praises from his fans in Japan, where he last toured in 2007 with Mighty Crown.

"To me -- performing before such a large crowd is an achievement," says Mr. Vegas. "It's a joy to see legions of fans on the other side of the world......mi tell you, Reggae music is a universal language that transcends race, color, class and creed."

A climactic moment of Mr. Vegas' stage show was a performance of High Energy, his background dancers that constantly bring the fire with kinetic dance moves injected with dancehall flavor. Throughout their segment, High Energy received monstrous forwards. Led by Boricia Anthony Brown and Tishana Ellis, High Energy is blossoming in recognition, with requests for appearances through out the world.

"As this is our first time in Japan, the experience has been quite rewarding," says Tishana. "Clearly, Japanese fans hold the 'dance' element of Dancehall culture with high regard, as evidenced by the outpour of appreciation we are receiving," added Boricia.

Mr. Vegas is riding high with the success of multiple singles/videos including "Daggering" and "Mus Come a Road." He is set to shoot a video for the highly anticipated "dance" tune "Round of Applause" later this month. The danceall singjay has also scored this summer with heavily attended tours and performances in Europe, Africa and Guyana. Surely, Mr. Vegas has lots in store for the remainder of 2008.

Veteran International Reggae Manager and Tour Coordinator, Copeland Forbes returns to Jamaica this week from a two week major planning mission in Bangkok, Thailand, where he went at the invitation of Steve Creighton a long time promoter, who along with Larry Riggs owns Fort Lauderdale’s Plantation Inn and Reggae Café.

In celebrating the release of the book, “Reggae My Life Is” and his 47th anniversary in the reggae music fraternity, Forbes has organized a series of major concerts around the world. Written by Clyde McKenzie, “Reggae My Life Is” will be published and launched in February, 2009 at which time the anniversary tour will be underway.

Four concerts are planned for the Bangkok area to coincide with Reggae Month and Marcia Griffiths as well as Live Wya Band will be headlining amongst other icons at Bangkok’s famous reggae music venue, The Reggae Pub.

Owner of the 4000 capacity indoor outdoor, well equipped venue, Lersak Ubolsatit has been celebrating Bob Marley’s earthday there since 1988 and he is adamant about making the 21st anniversary of his acknowledgement a sensational bash. Live Wya Band will be doing a one month stint at The Reggae Pub and Forbes has been contracted to provide four club DJs to spin there for four nights weekly.

Forbes described the club as well designed with four huge screens for patrons who prefer to be outdoors and it has a retail section that carries many red, gold and green items; from golf bags, roller blades, skis and tees, to skateboards and a clothing line. He said the DJ contract will be for three months and includes salary, return airfare, accommodations, transportation, food and the additional Thai custom of providing a professional female masseur.

Opportunities were abound in Thailand as Forbes not only landed several management contracts, he also met with Russian millionaire businessman Nikolai Leukhin, with whom he discussed staging huge outdoor reggae shows, in Thailand.

Forbes’ visit coincided with the great performances of Jamaica’s Olympic athletes and in recognition of the dominance of the Jamaican athletes, Leukhin invited Forbes to stay at his US$5,000 to $10,000 a night Nickie Beach and Naissance Resort while in Bangkok. He received royal treatment, and described the amenities as amazing; as he was treated to two female Thai masseurs daily along with two cooks, a driver a sail boat and a bike to ride on his own if he so preferred.

Meetings were held with Leukhin’s partner Gaven Purisima of One Ball Company Ltd., who promoted Michael Jackson’s Thailand concert on his last world tour.

The three went on Leukhin’s yacht up the Mekong River to look at possible concert sites for the reggae shows in Puhket, Ho Chi Minh City , Democratic People’s Republic of Laos, Democratic Cambodia and Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Forbes will make stops in Nagoya, Japan to finalize more book launch and anniversary celebration concert arrangements, before heading home to Jamaica. He will be joining forces with Headline Entertainment with whom he will work on these projects. The tour is slated to extend to places like, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, The UK, US and Canada, with the final show to be staged in Jamaica in late 2009. That one will feature The Mighty Diamonds; who is the first group that Forbes ever managed, as well as many of the artists with whom he worked over the past 47 years.

Dancehall selectors should not encourage lyrical wars

Dancehall should be for enjoyment, fun and entertainment – not war. However it appears as if many sound system disc jockeys are adding fuel to an ever brewing fire of lyrical wars, that are commonly unleashed by disgruntled Dancehall DJs who make no hesitation to clearly speak their minds in song.

While reggae and dancehall have been famous for showcasing important messages to the world, bringing personal and sometimes intimate issues and details to an audience that only wants basic entertainment can get to be excessive – not to mention, monotonous.

Is it a ploy to win sympathizers and in so doing form separate warring factions? Answers to this question eludes all forward thinking dancehall partakers, who feel lyrical war indulgence only serves to promote division and even further ignite combative situations.

When dancehall fans enter their party of choice, it is not because they want to cheer on or take sides in some DJ’s personal problems. And so the sound system selectors need to ease up off of the nonsense and stop playing the rival tunes back to back, because that kind of selecting spurs on animosity and sometimes violence follows.

As opposed to the song that says, "Push wood in the fire jockey," regardless of how you interpret it, our disc jockeys need to change their way of approaching the lyrical wars and maybe, p"our water on the fire," instead.

And set de war ting straight!

According to talk on celebrity news websites, Oprah Winfrey is presently caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place as many of her show’s staff are in favour of her featuring Sarah Palin, McCain’s running mate, on her famous talk show; but her endorsement of Barack Obama forces her to scoff at the idea.

With tons of requests pouring in through Oprah’s website to have Palin on the show, as well as a staff that is divided on the idea, Oprah appears to be leaning towards blocking the Palin idea completely.

Sources reportedly said the talk show magnate has in the past refused to have other high-profile Republicans on her highly rated show. Justice Clarence Thomas was once denied the opportunity to showcase his autobiography on the Oprah Show.

While neither Oprah nor executive producer Shari Salata have made any comments on the issue, sources say they may be adamantly against the proposed feature of Palin even though an executive has reportedly warned Oprah of possible unseemly repercussions if the Republican running mate is banned from the show.

The question of what is Oprah afraid of, has been posed. However it is obvious that her tremendous support for Obama may deem a Palin feature on the Oprah Show inappropriate. Some however think that Oprah is afraid that Palin will look too good and cause voters to sway from supporting Obama.

Dr. Alverson Bailey, past president of the Medical Association of Jamaica told the Jamaica Star this week that it is quite possible for the penis to become fractured. This statement was made during Star reporter’s investigations on a man admitted to the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) with a fractured penis, during the rough weather of Tropical Storm Gustav.

Sources gave The Star the amazing report that the man had to go in search of medical attention at KPH after having fractured his penis during sex.

Not able to confirm anything with the gentleman in question, The Star got basic confirmations of the incident from others including a friend of the man who reportedly said, "he did break his penis."

Reports on those interviewed at KPH indicate that many spoke with humorousness on the notion of a fractured penis, but Dr. Bailey warned against taking this lightly and ignoring the need for medical attention if this occurs.

Explaining that a penile fracture is not uncommon, Dr. Bailey said that the structure maintaining the integrity of the penis can become torn. He told The Star further that when it happens the penis makes a loud popping sound after which comes excruciating pain and swelling that leaves the penis looking deformed; and for some bleeding occurs as well.

Dr. Bailey said, how this happens mostly is by men missing their mark during rough sex and hitting the pubic bone of the female instead; resulting in a fracture. Further he noted that women who dominate during sex can cause such fractures, with excessive enthusiasm in certain positions.

Getting medical assistance in the event of a penile fracture was emphasized as being very important by Dr. Bailey, since if left untreated the penis could become permanently damaged and impotence could also follow.

Parenting is for the most part extremely rewarding and satisfying. However there are unavoidable monumental challenges at times that can only be overcome through determination and above all love, as is exemplified in the case of the mothers of Bob Marley’s children and particularly with Rita Marley his widow.

In an encouraging manner, she explained how children born and raised in the ghetto can achieve great accomplishments through the consistent and effective parenting skills of those raising them.

The key to achievement lies in the hands of parents who must fulfill their responsibilities and deal with the challenges of parenting in the inner city, Rita Marley explained. She further noted that instructing children in love; explaining to them that while good and evil exists, they should always reach for good no matter what the cost – was important.

Attributing much of what she learned about child-rearing to an aunt with whom she grew, Rita Marley is thankful for the lessons and how they transcended time to afford her own children success. She said her aunt simply assured that she was raised with love, respect and discipline; never compromising her values.

The brainchild of Vincent and Patricia Chin since 1958, the strong vibe of Randy's came first, fuelling positive energy into the complete package of studio, distribution and sales. Idler's Rest was the famous hub of creativity that was situated just around the corner of Randy's Record Mart; and in there many producers and artists gathered in search of a chance to record in the studio.

Much of Jamaican music history was created at that time, in an era commonly recognised as reggae music's most creative period; and it is wonderfully portrayed in the upcoming anthology, "Randy's 50th Anniversary" that provides an indepth audio/visual experience featuring 50 of the studio's greatest productions.

Reggae icons like Bob marley, Peter Tosh, Toots & The Maytals, The Skatalites and Dennis Brown are among the artists on the CD/DVD collection that comes with extensive liner notes from historians, Steve Barrows and David Katz; and a complimentary DVD full of interviews.

Disc 1 covers a period from 1960 to 1971 when ska tunes like the politically motivated "Independent Jamaica" from Lord Creator and the Skatalites' "Malcolm X" were produced by Randy's, where popular and controversial styles of music were embraced. Other songs on this disc include: Bob Marley & The Wailers' cover of the Archie's pop single "Sugar Sugar" and "John And James" by a youthful Toots & The Maytals. Musical pioneers like the great trombonist Don Drummond on "Machine Shop", organ player Jackie Mittoo on "End Dust" and the original sound system deejay Winston 'Count Machukie' Cooper on "Warfare" - shine on this disc.

The second disc reflects a time in music between 1971 and 1976 with "Don't Go" by Horace Andy, "Lonely Soldier" by Gregory Isaacs, "For The Love of You" by John Holt and "Cheater" from Dennis Brown. The 1972 Clive Chin produced award winning hit by Augustus Pablo, "Java" is featured along with I-Roy's "Hospital Trolley" that was recorded on the "Java" rhythm. Peter Tosh's "You Can't Fool Me Again" and Junior Byles' "King of Babylon" are also included in this bicentennial commemorative set that chronicles reggae music culture form ska to reggae to dub.

In an interview on the accompanying DVD, Sly Dunbar of famous bass drum duo, Sly & Robbie speaks highly of the Randy's Studio 17 sound saying, "[it] sounds ten times better than the stuff being put out today. We are [now] trying to get back that sound but we can't get it back."

Randy's Studio 17 churned out great hits like: Bob Marley and The Wailers' ground-breaking album Catch A Fire to Peter Tosh's first two solo albums Legalize It and Equal Rights.

The 17 North Parade imprint was launched by VP in 2007 tn honor of the Reggae Mecca based Randy's Record Mart. 17 North Parade is dedicated to preserving and reintroducing the most influential musical pioneers of the Caribbean.

Shaggy told reporters recently that he sees similarities between Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama and the character Rocky from the 1976 motion picture of the same name.

In the movie a small time boxer got a once in a lifetime chance to fight the heavyweight champ in a bout in which he strives to go the distance for his self-respect.

Shaggy said the thing he found unique about Obama was his ability to inspire others to go the extra mile and "deliver."

Watching Obama is like viewing "Rocky" in Shaggy’s eyes, who said that he just gets motivated listening to him and will admire his spirit, whether or not he wins. Barack Obama’s speeches puts, "a fire under your ass," Shaggy said. As a pure symbol of hope he gets you charged up, he expounded.

The body of veteran Jamaican vocalist, Roy Shirley, left London on Monday September 1, for Jamaica for burial. Shirley, whose real name was Ainsworth Roy Rushton Shirley, died in July at his home in London.

One of Shirley's daughters, Queen Irie, told JIS News, that her father was a strong and spiritual man, who was principled and not afraid to stand up for what he believed in. "He was my guardian angel and I loved him. He told me to be brave, to keep trying, and to hold my head up," she said, adding that he was always full of joy and fun.

Long time friend and fellow London-based singer, Dennis Alcapone, described Shirley as a nice man, a fun person to be around, and an extraordinary performer. Alcapone said he met Shirley in the 1960s, while both worked for legendary producer, Bunny Lee, in Kingston. "He was a very nice person, full of jokes, [and] very inventive. He was a great performer who gave it his all; when he was on stage, he would be on his knees, crying. He was famous for these performances, and his stage outfits. He was a great performer," he reflected.

Roy Shirley rose to prominence and fame in the late 1960s, and he became renowned for his ecstatic stage performances, that led people to compare him with American soul singer, James Brown.

He performed in many countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, and appeared on Reggae Sunsplash in Jamaica in 1982, with backing provided by the Rico Rodriguez Band.

Shirley was raised by his mother and stepfather in Trench Town, Kingston, and began singing in talent contests in the late 1950s. Encouraged by fellow artiste, Jimmy Cliff, who introduced him on stage during one of his first performances, Shirley eventually turned professional during his teens. He subsequently moved to England in 1973, but would return to Jamaica to perform, as well as tour North America. His last performance was at a World Music Festival in the USA in June.

The repatriation of Shirley's body to Jamaica was initiated by the Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Olivia Grange, with the support of the Jamaica Association of Vintage Artistes, with coordination in London by the Jamaican High Commission.

The 70 year old is breathing new life into an age old family run trade of producing, bottling and distributing alcohol in Jamaica, as his own ancestors once owned and managed Jamaica’s leading rum producing firm, J Wray & Nephew.

Black Gold has been concocted using the Blackwell family recipes from the past and while it will surely be well established in the Jamaican marketplace, Blackwell has his sites set on exporting what is indeed a brand of Jamaica’s finest rum, overseas - particularly to the US and UK. In these regions, Blackwell’s reputation for impeccable business abilities are already highly recognized and respected.

Teaming up with partner Richard Kirshenbaum of New York’s Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners advertising agency, Blackwell has positioned Black Gold to become a much sought after and even coveted brand. With a track record that includes assisting in the reinvigoration of brands like: Target, Jergens and Moet & Chandon, Kirshenbaum is bound to put an extra magical touch to the business of establishing Black Gold on the global market scene.

Blackwell founded Island Records; and the world’s penchant for reggae music has been attributed to this excellent foresight of his. Born in London, he was raised in Jamaica and in 1959 turned an initial US$1,000 investment into a major recording industry conglomerate called Island Records.

Millie Small’s “My Boy Lollipop” was his first major hit and in 1971 he signed Bob Marley to Island giving him that initial and foremost boost towards superstardom. Other rock greats like U2, Roxy Music and Sly & Robbie were also signed to the Island label that was eventually sold to PolyGram.

As a hotelier, Blackwell has established resorts that he says are, “for people who want to come and get close to the real organic feel of Jamaica.” His tourism enclaves in Jamaica include: Goldeneye in Oracabessa, The Caves in Negril and Strawberry in rural St Andrew.

Kevin Burke, Black Gold Rum spokesman told reporters recently that, “Black Gold is certainly Jamaican treasure, we are very proud to launch and firmly plant our roots in Jamaica. The unique and authentic packaging and most importantly the high quality of the rum, give us something very special to share with consumers.”

Having been convicted in November 2001 of one count of rape and sentenced to a total of 10 years in prison for not only that rape, but also assault at common-law, indecent assault and breaching probation, dancehall DJ Zebra will be walking home free this coming weekend.

Zebra, whose voice bears a striking similarity to veteran dancehall great Tiger, rose to fame in the early 1990’s with hits like: “Picture Frame,” “Hype Type of Love,” “Redder Than Red.’ “Rupert” and “Dem Unfair Eh-No.”

Not even a decade later his demise became imminent as a string of offensive behaviors thrust him on the wrong side of the law. Reports ascribe Zebra’s misfortune that resulted in arrests, to his floundering career at the time.

His first serious brush with the law came after he reportedly beat his then girlfriend Sherilla Williams, following an argument at their Oakland apartment; which resulted in an assault of common-law charge being placed on him.

Zebra followed that one with an October 2000 incident where he reportedly fondled a 15 year-old girl, then tried having sex with her forcibly.

The DJ topped it off with what has been described as full fledged rape, when he allegedly used his trusted position as a route taxi driver to take an 18 year old university student into bushes near Barry, St Catherine, where he sexually assaulted her.

There will be a concert and party in Tawes Pen, St Catherine to celebrate Zebra’s release from prison after having been incarcerated for seven and a half years. Zebra became eligible for parole on March 5, 2005, but was required to stay in prison until his earliest possible release date, which is September 6, 2008.

Two years ago he released the tune “Stocky” on the Key One Records label.

With a backdrop of over 36,000 fun seeking reggae fans; big screen re-runs of the Beijing Olympics’ top Caribbean runs and a stellar line-up that included, Sizzla, Tarrus Riley, Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Coco Tea, Mavado and Admiral Bailey, Irie Jamboree doubled as a celebration of the Caribbean Olympic experience. Roy Wilkins Park was jammed on August 31, with patrons hailing from all corners like: Japan, Dominica and England, just to attend.

A tent allotted for media was officially opened in Honor of Usain ‘Lightening’ Bolt and Veronica Campbell-Brown; with Aleen Bailey, Chelsea Hammond and Bert Cameron on hand to represent the athletes.

While all headliners had their fans in a state of uproar, it was Coco Tea who acquired the label of top performer of the day. His ‘sweet sweet’ sound reeked havoc as he gave hit after hit from a catalogue brimming with number one tracks. “Rocking Dolly,” “Riker’s Island,” “I lost My Sonia,” “Good Life” and other songs such as the new tune dedicated to Presidential Candidate, Barack Obama captivated the crowd, earning him tumultuous applause from young and old alike.

There was complete frenzy amongst audience members when the Doctor energized the stage; and they became completely immersed in every word he said. Decked out in USA an Jamaican flag colors, Elephant Man demonstrated why he is called the ‘Energy God” as he showed off his agility with an impressive charm. Gliding through, tracks like "Gully Greppa" and "Signal The Plane," Ele stirred everyone up with the popular "Nuh Linga" that was dedicated to Olympic Superstar Usain 'Lighting" Bolt.

Keeping the good vibes flowing is what Sizzla’s entrance and execution highlighted that evening. His “Black Woman and Child,” “Taking Over” and “Rise to the Occasion” was met with shouts of joy. Yellowman also proved he will always have full command of the stage, as the crowd lit up at his delivery of classic hits like: “I’m Getting Married in the Morning,” “Nobody Move Nobody Get Hurt,” “Zungu Zungu Zeng” and “Mad Over Me.”

Tarrus Riley was another ace in the place as he engaged the crowd with his rendition of John Legend’s “Stay With You” and other hits like ‘She’s Royal,” that absolutely brought everyone to their feet.

Mavado, who entered the stage around 9pm returned from a one year absence and was highly anticipated by ‘stateside’ fans. Flags waved and greeted Mavado as he made his way on stage; and immediately he launched into his catalogue of hits that included, “Gully Side,” “Ganster for Life” and “On the Go (Faster Than Bullet).” Hardcore fans were in awe as Mavado thrilled them all. Some were heard expressing their displeasure at the, “bag a long talk,” included in his set; and thought that Mavado ought to tidy up his stage presence in that regard.

Impressive performances were also delivered by Hero, who charmed the crowd with "The Prayer." Konshens, was on point, RDX, DeMarco, Noddy Virtue, Dwayne Stephens and Soca Queen Alison Alison all left fans begging for more. Canadian Reggae singer Tanya Mullings charmed her new fans with her talent and suave and based on her performance at Jamboree, was able to secure at least two upcoming gigs. New York based reggae singer Elvis D had fans rocking and grooving with his big hit Party Time that has been burning up the airwaves all summer. Ragga Lox, Benny Bwoy and Empire Isis all had their moments in the spotlight.

Other celebrity guests in attendance were cricketer Courtney Walsh, Miss Jamaica/USA 2008; Val Cuffe and Sobers Esprit, executives of the Dominica Festival Commission who travelled all the way from Dominica to attend the event.

Fight bruk out as Mavado wooed Irie Jamboree massive

Irie Jamboree was a blast on August 31 in New York, with headliners like: Elephant Man and Coco Tea blowing up the place in their usual style. Beenie Man rocked, but Mavado tore it up; getting such tumultuous crowd response, that some in the audience got overheated.

Yardflex was surprised at reports of fights breaking out during Mavado’s time on stage, and injuries to some patrons reportedly included a stabbing and broken limb following a stampede of sorts.

Still Mavado did not disappoint and worked at giving fans what they wanted, after questioning them on the same. Did they come to fight or enjoy…did they want to hear him, he wondered aloud.

Hurricane hustling going on big time

Some people with strong business heads have devised a plan to make a dollar by shuttling others back and forth across the Harbour View Bridge. To lead someone across the bridge the cost is J$100 with the price rising to J$200 if you are taken on the “guide’s” back. The price swings up to J$500 to J$1000 if you have any load to carry along.

There is also a supply of fresh water and soap for cleaning up, upon arrival.

As he awaits the Athletissima Grand Prix in Lausanne, Switzerland, Asafa Powell spoke to reporters about his aims as a top sprinter; and he is bent on topping the remarkable 9.69 record set for the 100 meter by his team mate, Usain Bolt.

Speaking of Bolt’s record breaking run as ‘ridiculous” in terms of him going way and beyond anyone’s expectations, Powell said he is now inspired to go below 9.6 seconds for the 100 meters; as he is determined to make sure Bolt is out of his reach.

Although experiencing a season where injuries have become a barrier to his success, Powell was able to bring home an Olympic gold for the 4 by 100 relay, while individual medals eluded the champion sprinter who placed fifth in the 100 meter both in Beijing this year and in Athens in 2004.

Unable to explain why he masters the annual track circuits without ever medaling individually at any Olympics, Powell said that while Beijing was his best chance to cop an Olympic win so far, he is looking forward to the 2012 London games which he states will be his last opportunity.

Powell said, “I can't imagine the times he [Bolt] is capable of running at the moment. He's the man to beat right now but before it was me and if I can break another world record then I'll be the one back in the spotlight."

On Friday Bolt ran to a tidy 100 meter win at Zurich’s Weltklasse Athletic meeting that followed his brilliant display of a triple medal gold haul in Beijing.

Also scheduled to run in Lausanne, Bolt will be in action with the 200 meter, while Powell competes in the 100 meter.

On September 6 the life and legacy of the late Louise Bennett-Coverley will be celebrated in South Florida once more. In commemorating Miss Lou’s 88th birthday, Jamaican’s in South Florida will host an evening of song, dance and drama performances at the Sierra Norwood Calvary Baptist Church in North Miami. It will be the third annual community cultural tribute and scholarship fund-raiser.

As has been the custom, the proceeds will continue to support the Louise Bennett-Coverley Scholarship Fund tenable at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston.

Encouraging parents in the Diaspora to have their children participate in the event, Norma Darby, Director of the Florida based Jamaica Folk Revue sees this as an important step in familiarizing children with Jamaica’s culture. Following the passing of Miss Lou in July 2006, Darby initiated the scholarship programme that got underway in September that same year and it affords one student the opportunity to pursue the three-year diploma course in the performing arts annually. Since its inception the scholarship has been awarded to three students, two at the School of Drama and Dance and one at the School of Music.

In describing Miss Lou, Darby said she was , "A great folklorist who made Jamaicans proud of our vernacular, knowing that it is respected as another language, giving us pride and dignity in our cultural heritage." The scholarship programme therefore stands as an investment in continuing Miss Lou’s invaluable contribution to Jamaica’s cultural development.

A talented line-up is slated for the event that includes: dub poet, Malachi Smith, Jeanne Powell, the Jamaica folk Revue, Tallawah Mento Band, Reverend Easton Lee, Sophia Nicholson, Chris Gilchrist and the Sierra Norwood Calvary Church Children’s Choir. The programme will be presented under the patronage of the Jamaica Consulate General.

Twenty-three year old entertainer Shaneil Watson, otherwise called “Teflon” of Jacks River, St. Mary, was charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition at his home yesterday.

Reports from the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) Liaison Officer for St. Mary are that about 5:30 p.m., about members of a police team carried out an operation at Watson’s house. During a search, a .45 Colt pistol with 7 rounds of ammunition was found.

He was subsequently charged and is scheduled to appear in the Port Maria Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 1.

The Oracabessa Police are investigating.

Mopping up after Gustav is quite a huge feat for Jamaica and Prime Minister Bruce Golding is not only counting the country’s losses this weekend, he is also mobilizing government bodies to provide for those displaced and repair those areas that sustained major damage.

Still trying to determine how many lives were lost, the Prime Minister was able to disclose to journalists on Friday that the hurricane left millions of dollars in damage, with about 129 blocked roads, 150 destroyed houses and almost 4,000 people displaced – of which 2,000 were being sheltered in 100 emergency shelters.

Two major bridges, the Westmoreland Bridge in St. Mary as well as the Harbour View Bridge were badly damaged and many communities lost electricity and water supplies.

Residents from at least two communities that have been isolated by flood waters will be receiving emergency supplies by airlift and the Prime Minister said the National Water Commission and Jamaica Public Service Company Limited have already started restoration of services to several areas.

With all the mayhem that Gustav caused, the St James Parish Council was pleased with progress made in that area, as cleared drains allowing for the free flow of traffic in the usually flood-prone region.

As Gustav travels towards the United States, residents of New Orleans have been ordered to evacuate. It is a mandatory evacuation order by the city’s mayor, who is preparing for the worse.

Due to the diligence of the St. James Parish Council, who made sure that the drains in flood prone areas were cleared, Montego Bay was prepared for the onslaught of Tropical Storm Gustav.
Early Friday morning the municipal police and the Red Cross volunteers were busily patrolling the city. A truck was also observed collecting debris.
Janel Ricketts, the community relations officer for the National Works Agency said that there were no major problems in the city, except that they were still without electricity.
However, several roads in other parishes have been blocked and teams have been deployed to clear them.

The flood prone Hope River Bridge was split in two late last week, courtesy of Tropical Storm Gustav. Gustav pummeled the island with torrential rains and heavy winds since Thursday of last week, causing significant damage and displacement of many citizens. The Hope River Bridge in Harbour View, (Harbour View Bridge), which is the only access route that the residents of Bull Bay have to commute to the corporate area broke in two.
One female motorist who was travelling across the bridge at about midnight described her harrowing experience. "The bridge crashed in the water with an eerie swooshing sound...it was like the road was splitting away, coming at us. It was terrifying."
Prime Minister Bruce Golding promised, in a press conference, that the National Works Agency would immediately begin erecting a temporary Bailey bridge, with a team working 24 hours a day it should be completed by early this week.

Beijing Olympics, Usain Bolt beat American Walter Dix (9.99 seconds) and Trinidadian Richard Thompson (10.09 seconds) to win the 100 meters clocking 9.83 seconds at the Weltklasse Golden League meeting held at the Letzigrund Stadium on Friday.
Though his start was poor, earning him the slowest reaction time on the field, Bolt recovered quickly and by mid-race was 'bolting' to an easy victory.
"It was a good nice track..." Bolt said. He also acknowledged that his start was not his best, but he "concentrated on winning..." He blames his slower time on his having a cold.
The meet was not a great success for the Caribbean as there were only a few medals earned. Bahamian Chris Brown placed third in the 400 metres in 45.05 seconds, Jamaican Danny McFarlane also finished third in the 400 metres hurdles in 48.40 seconds and Novlene Williams earned bronze in the 400 metres clocking 50.78 seconds.
