International News

wyclef_sydney_airport12_edit.jpgAccording to that crooked ass "Jacob the Jeweler", Wyclef owes him a small fortune.

Last month jeweler Jacob Arabov began federal prison sentence after being convicted of laundering millions of dollars for the Black Mafia Family. Now Arabov, known for providing bling to numerous Hip-Hop stars, has filed a lawsuit against rapper Wyclef Jean. The man and his company Jacob & Co. claim that the artist owes over $300,000 in outstanding bills.

The New York Daily News reports that a lawsuit was filed yesterday and Jacob & Co. accused Wyclef of purchasing $765,000 worth of watches and jewels between March of 2002 and January 2006, but still has a balance of $319,680.

The 43-year-old jeweler pled guilty to falsifying records and giving false statements in a federal case. He was sentences to 30 months behind bars.

It's hard to believe anyone can spend over $700 gees on some freakin' watches. But then again, we wouldn't put anything past this corrupt jeweler and his shady record keeping.

The Caribbean fighting AIDS

unaids_logo_edit.jpgThe Caribbean Launch of the UNAIDS Global 2008 report revealed that last year an estimated 23,000 - 270,000 persons were living with HIV, while an estimated 20,000 - 25,000 were newly infected, while 14,000 have died of illnesses related to AIDS. However, the spread of the illness has stabilized, while the numbers have declined in a few urban areas. This is most evident in the Dominican Republic and Haiti where the epidemic is most rampant. An estimated 30,000 people with HIV have received antiretroviral treatment, which is a 50 percent increase since 2006.

Edwin Carrington, Secretary General of CARICOM, said that the Caribbean is the only region in the world which has built strong partnerships against the epidemic, in the form of Pan Caribbean Partnerships against HIV/AIDS (PANCAP).

AIDS still remains one of the leading sources of death among the 25 - 44 age group in the Caribbean, but with continued scaling of the antiretroviral treatment, the number of persons with HIV progressing to AIDS could be reduced.

UNAIDS said that the main cause of HIV transmission in the Caribbean remains unprotected heterosexual sex, but "unprotected sex between men is also a significant factor..."

Journalists in Mexico for AIDS Conference

aids_logo.jpgIn preparation for the largest conference of its kind, the 2008 XVII International AIDS Conference, which starts on August 3, fifty-eight journalists from 40 countries have gathered in Centro, Banamex, Mexico City for the Journalist to Journalist (J2J) global media training programme on HIV/AIDS. The 4 day training session is expected to equip journalists in covering the science, technology, behavioral and prevention issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.

The National Press Foundation (NPF) has trained hundreds of journalists in providing coverage for these major AIDS conferences. President, Bob Meyers says that the sessions should be informative and journalists will learn a lot.

Journalists in attendance this year will be expected to prepare a curriculum for news rooms world wide which will benefit journalists not in attendance.

At a cost of $25 million the programme is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Merck Company and Pan American Health Organization, to name a few.

The conference will be addressing a number of scientific issues and findings surrounding HIV/AIDS.

America to apologise to Black Americans for slavery

capitol-building-picture_edit.jpgA white- Jewish congressman, who is up for re-election this year and an advocate for the US apologizing to minority groups for past mistreatments, and a sponsor for Memphis blacks, is pleased as the US government will be taking a vote in the House of Representatives to offer a formal apology to the black Americans for "enslavement and racial segregation".

The US has officially recognized that "lingering consequences" from slavery and segregation continue to haunt black Americans, as they embrace their first black presidential nominee, Barack Obama.

The US government has apologized for the abuse of ethnic minorities twice in the past: in 1988 they apologized to the Japanese Americans for WW11 and the Hawaiians in 1993.

Once the apology is passed, the Senate will need to approve it before George Bush can sign the measure into law.

The apology states; "An apology for centuries of brutal dehumanization and injustices cannot erase the past, but confession of the wrongs committed can speed racial healing and reconciliation and help Americans confront the ghost of their past."

Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Florida, North Carolina and Alabama states have each approved apologies for slavery.

American wins "Dance Hall Queen" title

american-flag-2a_edit.jpgThe 11th winner of the annual "Dance Hall Queen" contest, held at the Pier One Complex, Montego Bay, holds the distinction of being the first American to win the competition.

Twenty three year old Michelle Young of Boston, USA, ecstatically proclaimed that she has never been so happy in her life. "I am going to cherish this moment for the rest of my life... I am on top of the world"

One other awardee, for Best Costume, was the crowd favourite, Tavia Morris, who initially, seemed to have been upstaging Young with her athletic movements. However, when the winner was announced the patrons applauded their approval.

The patrons were treated to an evening of top class entertainment; classic music from Pure Playazz Sound System, guest dancers and a fashion show featuring the latest designs from Big Head Clothing Store.

Jerry D hosted the give away section of the evening, where patrons had the chance to win sex toys, adult videos, condoms, a Blackberry phone and a component set.

Cherine Anderson and Sly & Robbie "Give it to" Madonna

madona_robbie&sly_cherine.jpgLegendary producers Sly & Robbie have churned out another "blazin" tune. This time the artist requesting the track was none other than arguably the world's largest pop icon, Madonna. Madonna was a fan of Sly & Robbie and Cherine Anderson's amazing remix of the Britney Spears' song "Piece of Me", and wanted the magic of the trio on her new single, "Give It 2 Me" (the second single off her new album Hard Candy).

The hands-on Madonna was so impressed by the work of the Riddim Twins and Cherine that she chose several of their mixes to be released. Now available via iTunes are two mixes, "Sly & Robbie Ragga Mix" and "Sly & Robbie Bongo Mix".

Cherine was truly thrilled to have the opportunity to work on a project with the queen of re-invention. "I grew up listening to Madonna and in college her songs were huge on the dance floor. It's always great fun working with Sly & Robbie. It's a huge honor to be featured on this remix."

News Brief

Blue Cross loses bid to Sagicor.

sagicor_edit.jpgThe corporate battle for the management of the $2 billion Government Employees Administrative Services Only Health Insurance Scheme, (GEASO), has finally come to an end.

The staff of Blue Cross Jamaica was today informed that Sagicor Life Jamaica Limited, formerly LOJ, has secured an agreement to acquire their insurance portfolio.

Blue Cross had managed the health scheme since the mid 1980's, which they had won through a tender process up until 1997. However the contract had not been put to tender again until last year, where LOJ, Blue Cross and Guardian Life all submitted bids. When it seemed as if the government would award the contract to LOJ a battle ensued, as Blue Cross insisted that the contract remain with them.

Union's representing Public Sector Workers complained that the GEASO Monitoring Committee, which represents the interests of beneficiaries of the scheme, was excluded from the selection process. Granville Valentine, of the National Workers Union, described this exclusion of the committee as "total madness" and expressed his disappointment at their silence on the matter.

However, Sagicor's president and CEO, Richard Byles, assured that the acquisition will allow Sagicor to deliver health benefits to both Sagicor and Blue Cross customers even more cost efficiently in the future, while Blue Cross chairman, Dr. Henry Lowe, said that this acquisition will allow Blue Cross clients to enjoy present benefits, as well as new possibilities with access to a much wider range of products and services from a company with regional and global links.

The transaction is subject to the approval of the Financial Services Commission.

Muslim Terrorist Group Threaten Safety of 29th Olympic Games

20070806-2008olympicseal_edit.jpgIn a video statement, a Muslim separatist group, claiming to represent the Turkestan Islamic Party, confessed to being responsible for a series of fatal explosions in several Chinese cities and have threatened the Olympic Games, due to begin August 8.

So far the groups boast of previous terrorist activities have proved to be unfounded, as the incidents mentioned had nothing to do with terrorism, stated head of Wenzhou municipal public security bureau.

However, Chinese authorities have alleged that extremists from the restive northwestern region of Xinjiang - known as East Turkestan were targeting the Olympics. They claim that they have unearthed a plot to attack a football venue in Shanghai and have broken up 12 terrorist groups in Xinjiang. Since then they have boosted security by stationing a 100,000 anti-terrorist force in Beijing and have installed explosive detectors at airports in Xinjiang.

On the video, the groups leader, Commander Seyfullah, stated that "Despite...repeated warnings...to (stop) the 29th Olympics in Beijing...the Turkestan Islamic Party volunteers who have gone through special preparations have started urgent actions...Our aim is to target the most critical points related to the Olympics." He also urged Muslim spectators not to attend the games, "Please do not stand together with the faithless people."

The Minister of Public Security said that already they have thwarted two plots to kidnap athletes, journalists and visitors to the Olympics Games and to blow up hotels, government offices and military targets in Shanghai, Beijing and other cities.

Sasha and Turbulence Back Together Again?

Turbulence_and_Sasha_edit_1.jpgAfter shooting their new single "Don't Want To Be Alone" on the Breeze Riddim by Terminal 4 Media, Sasha and Turbulence have tongues wagging about the status of their relationship.

The video which has the pair hugging and kissing and asking questions, "Why did you leave..." and "...I want you right by my side" has the public wondering if these lyrics are based on true feelings. However, both Sasha and Turbulence deny any romantic connections. Sasha said that they are nothing more than good friends, while Turbulence says that they are friends who have great chemistry when they perform together. The on screen kiss was just acting, they both declared.

It is believed that after their public 2006 breakup the two were lyrically 'throwing words' at each other with Turbulence's "No Man No Perfect" and Sasha's "Got What You Need". Sasha, however, qualifies this, "I don't wanna say we were throwing words...we just expressed ourselves. It wasn't a war... I said my piece, he said his piece." She added, "I still love him as a person, he has a good heart and soul...but it's hard to go back."

High School Principals Condemn Prime Minister Labelling Them "Extortionists"

b_golding_edit.jpgOn Tuesday, July 22, Prime Minister Bruce Golding, who stated in Parliament that the collection of auxiliary fees by some high schools for this academic year was a form of "extortion", has come under harsh criticism and condemnation from the Jamaica Teachers' Association,(JTA) and The Jamaica Association of Principals of Secondary Schools, (JAPPS), who are both demanding an apology and a retraction of the statement.

Both bodies described the PM's statement as an attack on the work of administrations in the schools. The JTA, in a release, said that administrators who are dealing with the "...woefully inadequate funding provided by the government - have by creative means kept these institutions open and functioning."

President of JAPPS, Nadine Molly, said that for the PM to use the words "extortion" and "principal" in the same sentence suggests that the principals are collecting the money for themselves.

Molly explained that the auxiliary fees go towards lab work and other student activities, as well as overall maintenance of school property. "It is ridiculous to think that schools can survive on the meager assistance that the government provides," she further added. She also emphasized that "these fees are crucial. They go toward providing a rounded education for the students."

Education Minister, Andrew Holness, encouraged school administrators not to depend wholly on auxiliary fees but to implement fund raising projects.

Children Being Trained for a Life of Crime

children_with_guns.jpgA senior investigator, with the Jamaica Constabulary Force, who wishes to remain anonymous, has reported that Jamaican children, as young as three years, are being taught to smoke marijuana, consume alcohol and use firearms as part of their training for a life of crime.

The senior investigator, with more than 20 years experience in law enforcement, said that the child criminal has no emotion, no soul, no fear, no feelings, or sense of reasoning, they only know how to be criminals.

This sentiment was supported not only by police statistics, but by Dr. Henley Morgan, head of the innercity project, Caribbean Applied Technology, in Trench Town. He said that these children are "...predisposed to crime and violence. Shaped from the womb..."

Police statistics reveal that in 2005-2006, approximately 150 minors, (12-15 years), were arrested for a myriad of crimes, while in 2005, 826 criminals, (12-20 years), were arrested. According to the investigator, the 18-25 year old criminals are being replaced by the 12-13 year olds.

It has been revealed that older siblings, immediate and extended family members are responsible for initiating these children from as early as six years old into a life of crime.

By the age of 15, these children have acquired up to 10 years experience in criminal activities and a growing appetite for murder. It is this criminal legacy which is hampering the governments crime management initiative.

Lawman Lynch, a former resident of the innercity and president of the KSA Action Forum Youth Organisation, a Safe School Ambassador as well as a Youth and Community Development consultant, told the Sunday Observer that these children must be rescued through education and social intervention, which must include parenting skills, as he sees where "...there is dire need for good parents."

Caribbean Athletes to be honored at North America's Premier Reggae Festival

Irie_Jamboree_'08new_edit.jpgLouie Grant, VP of New York based Irie Jam Media, co-producers of Irie Jamboree (North America's premier reggae festival), announced today that the theme for the 2008 Irie Jamboree concert is "celebrating Caribbean athletes representing the region at Beijing '08, the summer Olympics; with a view to honor the legacy of our past Olympians."

"This year we are sending our strongest Track & Field/athletic contingent ever to the games, and I am expecting a good haul of medals from this quality field of athletes," an elated Grant reiterated.

"Great Caribbean Olympians such as Arthur Wint, Herb McKinley, Donald Quarrie, Hasley Crawford, Dennis Johnson, Lenox Miller, Merlene Ottey, Bertland Cameron, Ana Quiro, Javier Sotomayor, Anier Garcia, Debbie Ferguson, Otto Boldon, Alberto Juanterino, Deon Hemmings and so many others have advanced our formidable athletic tradition on the international stage. Their legacy ought to be recognized by us, reggae kindred here in the US, particularly during the Labour Day weekend celebrations" Grant noted.

The decision to honour the Caribbean athletes at Irie Jamboree 2008, came on the heels of Usain Bolt's 100m (9.72secs) world record run at the Reebok Grand Prix at Ichan Stadium, in New York on Saturday, May 31 2008, an event that Grant's company, Irie Jam Media has served as Caribbean media partner for the past three years.

"At Irie Jam Media, we have long recognized the synergy created by two indigenous Jamaican products - reggae music and sports. We are very committed to further explore the potential of these two areas towards the sustainable economic development of our beloved island home. Our participation in the Reebok Grand Prix (track & field meet) is testament to our efforts in the melding of these areas. This year, our flagship summer event Irie Jamboree, is themed to celebrate our incredible athletes and to give further credence to our articulated commitment of ensuring that the Caribbean does not miss out on the opportunities created by what is its by birthright" Grant noted.

As another goodwill jester, the VIP and media tents will be named the "Usain 'Lighting' Bolt VIP Tent" and the "Veronica Campbell-Brown Media Booth" to honour Bolt's historic, world record run at the Reebok meet, and for Mrs. Campbell-Brown's consistent performance at the event since its inception. The Art & Craft area at the festival will be named the "Caribbean Olympic Village" in honor of all Caribbean athletes, who will compete at this year's summer Olympics.

Irwine Clare, CEO of Team Jamaica Bickle, an organization that has had a very close association with Irie Jam Media and by extension Irie Jamboree and the Reebok Grand Prix said, "The organizers of Irie jamboree must be commended for their appreciation of the impact of our Caribbean athletes on the world stage and also for incorporating and heralding their achievements in the theme for this year's concert. Being an Olympic year, coupled with the fact that the existing world record for 100 meters was established right here in New York, lends additional rationale and significance to the plans for this year. Team Jamaica Bickle lauds Irie Jamboree for this steadfast support of Caribbean athletics. Lets come out and celebrate our athletes...our ambassador," he said.

Among the reggae acts slated to perform at Irie Jamboree 2008 are Tarrus Riley, Coco Tea, Sizzla, Beenieman, Elephant Man, Serani, Bugle, DeMarco and Hero. More acts are to be announced soon.

Trouble in paradise with Bermuda bound marijuana seized

dennis_pamplin.jpegBermuda's political scene took a jolt recently with Dennis Pamplin, the husband of their deputy opposition leader being fingered as the head man in a major drug trafficking ring. Held by United States Drug Enforcement Administration in Newark, New Jersey last week, the traffickers were caught preparing to export 700 pounds of marijuana from the US to Bermuda.

Following what has been described as a year long investigation, a warehouse in Orange, New Jersey was found to be housing the large quantity of marijuana. Concealed in cement columns it was due to be shipped off to the beautiful island of Bermuda.

Arrested at the warehouse on July 15 were Dennis "King" Pamplin, 58, of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Brian Henry, 31, of Bloomfield. Pamplin, who was reportedly found to be living in a New York residence with a woman - described by courts as his girlfriend, is married to Patricia Gordon-Pamplin; also the shadow minister of works and engineering for the United Bermuda Party. The couple have two children.

Charged with the federal offense of conspiring to distribute over 1,000 kilograms of marijuana, both men are being held at Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Henry, who has reportedly cooperated immensely with DEA officials, by allegedly telling them that marijuana was concealed in six concrete pillars, is being held with no bail.

Pamplin's bail has been set at $2 million and if released, he could be placed on house arrest with electronic monitoring. He will reportedly post a property in Florida for his bail.

Drug sniffing dogs became excited once they approached the concrete pillars, while the warehouse in Orange, New Jersey was being searched in Pamplin and Henry's presence. Henry allegedly told the DEA agents that he helped to prepare the marijuana, while Pamplin took care of transporting it to Bermuda.

Henry is said to have offered more information to federal agents who also learned from him that Pamplin was involved in a 2007 high speed chase in Morris County after he was robbed when attempting to purchase large amounts of marijuana. Chatham police records show that Pamplin was indeed arrested last year with 2 others and $97,000 was found in their possession.

Paul Bergrin, who is Pamplin's lawyer has reportedly maintained that Pamplin is in the asbestos removal business and that he only stopped by the warehouse to check out a job. The lawyer said further that Pamplin was not aware that marijuana was on the premises.

Agents believe Pamplin has exported more than 2,000 pounds of marijuana from New Jersey to Bermuda over the past year. According to agents, the marijuana has a value of about $15 million.

Reggae Update 2008

reggae_flier_edit.JPG

The place to be on August 2, 2008 is Golden Spring Community Centre, St. Andrew, for the Reggae Update 2008. The show, which features top and upcoming reggae artistes, will have music provided by Melody One and MCs Isis and Shabba.

The show is being promoted by Simbo Entertainment. The main man, Simeon has worked on several Reggae shows, including Rebel Salute and Western Consciousness.

Simeon revealed that the idea for the show came about because he knows the power of Reggae music and feels that people often misinterpret the purpose that the music serves.

The venue for the event was chosen due to its close proximity to the Kingston area. When choosing the venue, the promoters considered the fears that people have with crime being so prevalent. So this venue is closer to Kingston with a in a cool environment.

"Patrons can expect a clean show with uplifting music and talented artistes, wholesome entertainment and enjoyment for the entire family," states Simeon.

Pastor Facing Buggery Charges

A pastor, who is also a supervisor of a boys home in rural Jamaica, has been charged with 30 counts of buggery against boys in the institution.

It is reported that an alleged victim reported an incident which took place in February to the Child Development Agency, whose investigations resulted in the pastor being arrested and charged for the crimes.

The pastor appeared in the Richmond Magistrate's court on Wednesday, July 23, where it was revealed that other boys at the institution had come forward with similar accusations. Upon further investigation 29 additional charges of sexual abuse were subsequently added to the original one.

The accused has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to return to court on Wednesday, July 30.

VP Records Releases Busy Signal's New Album "Loaded".

08_busy_signal_edit.jpgReanno Gordon, aka Busy Signal, one of the hottest dancehall artistes, will be releasing his much anticipated album through VP Records on September 9th, 2008.

The album contains hits such as "Jail", "These Are The Days", "Unknown Number" and "Wine Pon Di Edge", which are presently dominating the dancehall scene. There are also the hip hop/dancehall mix of "Tic Toc" and "Cool it Baby".

Busy's talent for telling the story of the life of ghetto youths in "These Are The Days". "Knocking", "People So Evil" and "Curfew", has made him a much respected spokesperson for the residence of the innercity communities.

As a protege of Bounty Killer, and a member of Bounty's musical powerhouse, The Alliance, he has received international attention since he began in 2005 with hits "Born and Grow" and "Step Out".

His mastery of the stage has led to his being booked on all major Jamaican stage shows, the most recent being, Reggae Sumfest.

The release of this album "Loaded" will only serve to cement him as a solid member of the dancehall fraternity.

Nesbeth comes out of his 'Board House'

By: Joan Wilson

nesbeth_boardhouse_edit.jpgGreg Nesbeth, aka Nesbeth, is really coming into his own right now. Ever since his song Board House catapulted him into mainstream attention, the artiste, who is now signed to No Doubt Records is determined to continue on this positive trend.

Currently he is focusing on putting the finishing touches on his new upcoming album entitled Board House. One of the tracks that will be featured on the album is Guns Out, which is currently enjoying a steady buzz on the dancehall circuit right now. According to Nesbeth, this song is one of his favorites as it delves into the levity of inner-city life. "It's all about you having to see people being murdered, being tight lipped and to top it off having the cops coming in and treating you like criminals too."

The singer told YardFlex that he is happy with the trend his career is going, but all of that will not change him. "I am the same humble individual I have always been. I am happy that Board House was a number one. I am not saying I will do it again, but if it's repeated, then I will still be me."

Still he would be a hypocrite if he did not admit that success has its perks, one that he is currently enjoying. According to him he now gets more recognition from producers as where he used to pine to be on a top riddim, he is now being sought out! And of course there is the recognition he is now receiving within the music business and on a social level...he revealed with a cheeky smile on his lips. As much as he is enjoying the new turn in his career, that has not always been the case for this talented singer. He recorded several songs for other producers which went no where. It was a big let down for him when enough promotion was not being put into bringing the material to the attention of listeners. One of his recordings, I Love Her She loves Me, got some amount of buzz, but not as much as he would have liked.

Nesbeth is grateful to friends from his old school, Charlie Smith High, who encouraged him to pursue his dream when they realized he had the right vibes and the voice to go with it. "They started calling me Nesbeth and I just stuck with it, according to them Greg does nothing for me." the singer told YardFlex with a laugh.

Board House which is produced by Flava is expected to be released by September and will feature tracks such as Board House (title track), Guns Out, Baby Mother among others.

The Health Benefits of Watermelon.

watermelon-3.jpgResearchers from the US' Texas Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Centre have announced that the chemical, Citrulline, found in Watermelon, creates the same effect on the human body as the Viagra pill.

Cetrulline, an organic compound, relaxes the blood vessels, allowing the increase in blood flow around the body, much the same way the sex enhancement drug does.

Head of the research team, Dr. Bhimu Patil, says that the list of important health benefits one can derive from eating the fruit is getting longer with each study. "Watermelon may not be as organ specific as Viagra...but it is a great way to relax blood vessels without the side effects."

Watermelon, it has been discovered, is also good for the heart, immune system and skin, as even though it is 92% water, the other 8% is pure anti-oxidant lycopene.

Remember that the next time you have a slice of cool refreshing Watermelon!

Entertainment Centres Under pressure

DMckenzie_edit.jpgMayor Desmond McKenzie is not pardoning entertainment centers in the Kingston and St. Andrew area. Club goers will have to find new party spots, as The Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation, (KSAC), will be on a rampage to close down more than 20 of the common night clubs and entertainment spots in this area.

Mayor Desmond McKenzie has announced that the KSAC has carried out investigations, and and a number of these places were in breach of the International Fire Code (IFC). The IFC examines steps to prevent fires as well as extinguishing them.

The code states that in the event of a fire proper measures must be in place to detect, find and extinguish the fire in a way that will have minimal effect on the building and more importantly the safety of individuals.

Desmond McKenzie has explained that several of these places of entertainment were inspected and were in breech of these codes. Mr. McKenzie will be taking stern actions over the next few days.

Desmond Mckenzie who just recently received death threats, for his move to clamp down on extortionists a month ago, says he will continue dealing with the issues at hand. He explains that most of these places of entertainment only have one way for both entry and exit. This is in breech of the IFC and can cause harm to occupants in the event of a fire.

News Brief

No Alliance for Beenie Man's "Summer Sizzle"

beenie_bounty_mavado_summersizzle.jpgBeenie Man extended an invitation to Bounty Killer and Mavado to perform at his "Beenie Sizzle" event on August 6 at Jamalco Sports Complex, Halse Hall, Clarendon.

However, their manager, Head of Alliance Entertainment, Julian Jones-Griffith, has turned down the invite, even though the promoter of the event, Cabel Jeffrey Stephenson of Free People Entertainment, announced that if they attended the event they would be treated like royalty.

Regardless of a release stating that the artistes will be attending, Jones-Griffith stated that Mavado is already booked for another event on that date, and that Bounty will be overseas. Jones-Griffith said that that was an error made by the media.

As he was vague about the details of their engagements, Dancehall advocates for peace between the artistes are left wondering if this isn't only a ploy to avoid Beenie Man.

Germany considers restricting violent anti-gay reggae

ele_TOK.jpgOver the next couple of months, The Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons, a department in the Government of Germany, will be deliberating on whether or not to jump on the "fight murder music" bandwagon.

Their aim is to carefully investigate the music of dancehall artists like Elephant Man and T.O.K., in an effort to determine whether their material should be placed on Germany's "Index of Harmful Materials." Rather than an outright censorship, being on this index would completely limit the level to which these musicians could promote their work.

The English version of Deutsche Welle. quoted Volker Beck, the leader of the Green Party in Germany's parliament - who said, "Those in Jamaica who invoke hatred should not earn money with their music in Germany." He went further to call on major retailers of music online to remove CDs deemed hateful from their inventories.

"The Index of Harmful Materials" contains media items intended to induce hatred, like productions that promote or glorify war and violence.

Glorifying violence and the murder of gays has been the cause for some unraveled purse strings among a few reggae artists over recent years. There have been threats of boycotts on Jamaica and many canceled events, initiated by gay rights groups around the world.

These have in turn been countered by 'the reggae community for freedom of speech,' who plan to raise their point during New York's carnival celebrations this year.

Don denies phone in rectum

cellphone_in_rectum.jpgWhile incarcerated at the Horizon Remand Centre, for violating the conditions of a bail agreement, Miller's person, as well as his cell, were searched. The police reported that two cellphones were discovered in both his body and cell, along with a phone charger and a tub of Vaseline. Miller is to be charged for possession of contraband.

In a scathing letter to the STAR, the inmate vehemently denies these charges. Firstly he states that he could not have been searched by the police in the section of the prison where he was being held as that section is controlled by the JDF, and the police have no authority there. Also he stresses that absolutely no phone was found on or in his person or his cell. He claims that the report was published to mar his sexuality which he emphasized as being undisputedly heterosexual.

He questions the report by asking; how it is possible that the person who conducted the search told his lawyer that no Vaseline or cellphone was discovered in his cell? Why is it that the person who claimed to have conducted the search is "unnamed" in the report?

Does the person who allegedly removed the contraband from his body have medical training to perform such operations on inmates? Finally, why wasn't he taken to the hospital to 'pass out' the contraband as is the procedure for drug mules?

Notwithstanding Miller's letter, Karl Angell, Director of Communications for the JCF, said that the police are sticking to their report and Miller is yet to be charged for the incident.

News Brief

Former Reggae Boy on Trial for Ganja Charges

lowe_01.jpgFormer Reggae Boys player, Onandi Lowe, will be appearing before the court, as his trial will begin today. He will be appearing on trial for breaching the Dangerous Drugs Act; following an incident in St. Catherine last December, where he was involved in a ganja affair.

When he appeared before the court recently his travel documents were confiscated.

Although Lowe will be on trial he believes he wasn't treated with equity, as the officers did not locate the ganja in his possession. However, the police officers stated that they stopped the motor vehicle in which Lowe was a passenger and conducted a search where they allegedly found the marijuana. Other passengers in the vehicle were also arrested.

New Crime Stategies to be revealed by Prime Minister

bruce_golding2_edit.jpgWith the increase in the level of criminal activities in Jamaica, it has been reported by The STAR that Prime Minister Bruce Golding will today be announcing the new crime strategies that will be implemented. It was anticipated that this announcement would have been made last week.

Mr. Golding has assured that harsher policies will be implemented, as his aim is to have a significant decrease in the level of crimes being committed presently, as more that 900 persons have been killed since the start of the year.

Police officers will now be able to detain individuals for up to 28 days without charge; offenders may be refused bail for gun-related offences for the first 90 days, and provision will be made for majority verdict in non-capital murder cases. These are among the new legislative changes that will be announced.

Mr Golding has, however, been receiving objections towards some of his new measures and changes. Convenor of Families Against State Terrorism, Yvonne McCalla- Sobers, has expressed that the new policies will not help the country's current crime problem as the measures are exceedingly harsh.

Executive Director of Jamaicans for Justice, Dr. Carolyn Gomes, another objector to the measures, strongly believes that the government has finally gotten the opportunity to use the crime situation that the island is currently facing, as an excuse to violate the rights of individuals.

Prisoners Attempt Jail Break

jail break_edit1.jpgAfter an attempted jailbreak and riot, thirty suspected inmates from the Gun Court Remand Centre on South Camp Road were transferred yesterday to the Horizon Remand Centre on Spanish Town Road.

It was reported by The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) that the riot began at about 9:00 am when workmen went to repair damaged burglar bars and locks.

After the chanting and the destroying of the locks by the inmates, The Mobile Reserve, the Department of Correctional Services and the Jamaica Defence Force were summoned to help restore order to the facility. Tear gas had to be used to suppress the prisoners.

All the inmates at the facility have been convicted of serious offences; from murders to firearm charges.

This is the second time since last week that the prisoners have attempted a jail break. The first attempt was on July 17th, when police officers realized that a ventilation grill had been removed from one of the blocks.

Morgan Heritage in demand from Montreal to Holland

By: Jaide

MH & SHERYL CROW_edit.jpg

Morgan Heritage was pleasantly surprised recently as they were gloriously received in Den Haag, a city about 30 minutes outside of Amsterdam, by a crowd of around 325,000. That audience packed a North Holland venue for the show that featured rock star, Sheryl Crow and the reggae rocking Morgan Heritage.

"To Jah be the glory," a Morgan Heritage spokesperson said, "we were very happy to perform on the show." The intriguing aspect of this performance for Morgan Heritage was the amazing reception by not only patrons at the concert, but also radio audiences in The Netherlands whose appreciation for reggae thrust the tune, "Nothing to Smile About" at number one on a popular station there.

Morgan Heritage is on a roll, with their usual stellar sound and excellent musicianship. Having absolutely thrilled crowds in Canada just the weekend before at Montreal's Reggae Festival, they went on to one of the biggest concerts in Europe, forever basking in the sweet success that only talent and hard work can bring.

Along with their protégé, Irie Love, whose 7 song EP is due for release shortly, the powerful family pack continues to shine, bringing 'Rockaz' to the world.

The radio station, also a major sponsor of the huge show, usually focuses on pop music like, Rihanna and Chris Brown, but they had been inundated with requests for Morgan Heritage and would not see the mega-concert go on without them on the bill.

Beres Hammond and Tarrus Riley delighted fans at Sumfest International Night

By: Dave Lindo
Photography By: Milton Raynor

sumfest_08_lilWayne_edit.jpg

Patrons, at the last night of Reggae Sumfest 2k8, the second International Night on Saturday, July 19, amidst intermittent rain drops, witnessed some classic performances from local acts, as well as the billed international stars.

The master himself, Beres Hammond, mesmerized his audience with another breath taking performance. Backed by the 'wicked' Harmony House band, Beres had his fans on their toes as he stepped on stage and sang "What Can You Do To Stop A Man From Trying". Jumping around and flashing his fingers after being seemingly 'hit' by his music, he went into "Step Aside".

sumfest_08_tpain_edit.jpg

The hits kept flowing nonstop and Beres didn't give his audience time to catch their breaths as he quickly went into "What One Dance Can Do" and "She Loves Me Now".

The great reggae crooner set Catherine Hall on fire as he sang "Tempted To Touch" and "Double Trouble".

With the Harmony House band in full flight, the 'captain' Beres Hammond soured to yet higher heights as he sang "Putting Up Resistance" and the well loved "Pull It Up".

sumfest_08_beres_edit.jpg

The ladies were on top of the world as Beres told them to "Show It Off". The musical genius ended an amazing performance with the song "Rock Away".

sumfest_08_tarrus_edit.jpg

Tarrus Riley, son of an icon in the reggae music, Jimmy Riley, made his family, himself and his country proud by giving a wonderful performance at Sumfest.

Tarrus got started on a high note as he told the crowd to "Protect Yu Head".

sumfest_08_brick&Lace_edit.jpg

With the band lead by the 'big man' himself, Dean Fraser, playing a tight set which sounded real sweet coming through the speakers, Tarrus shook Catherine Hall as he did the song "Beware".

The young Riley didn't hold back in displaying his beautiful voice, and used it to good use as he sang "When I'm Far Away" and "We Got It Going On".

sumfest_08_rootsunderground_edit.jpg

Tarrus paid tribute to the late singer, Garnett Silk, who in his short career made an everlasting mark on reggae music. In his tribute, Tarrus sang Silk's song "Nothing Can Divide Us".

With the sweet bass line thumping through the speakers, Tarrus invited his father on stage to sing their recent collaboration, a song paying tribute to dancehall music, on the rhythm of Sugar Minott's song "Tune In".

Tarrus ended a truly memorable performance with the songs "She Is Royal" and "I Will Stay With You".

sumfest_08_etana_edit.jpg

The 'Strong One' Etana, on a wet night, warmed Catherine Hall with a remarkable performance.

Etana stamped her class and had her fans singing along to songs such as: "I Am Not Afraid" and "Warrior Love". She stepped up the pace as she sang "Wrong Address", and ended just as strongly as she started with the song "Meditation".

The many teenagers on hand got their moneys worth with the performance of international act T Pain. Pain hit his audience with hit songs such as: "I'm Strong", "Shorty" and "In Love With A Stripper". The crowd was singing along as T Pain did his big multi-platinum song "Bartender".

sumfest_08_lilWayne_&_birdman_edit.jpg

Lil Wayne had his younger fans working up a sweat as he unleashed his hit songs including "Lollipop" and "Fire Man". He was joined on stage for his "Cash Money" colleague Bird Man as he sang "Stunner".

It was obvious that Lil Wayne enjoyed himself performing for his Jamaican fans, who didn't hesitate to show their love for him.

Roots Underground gave a solid set and made their mark on Sumfest, so too did the Las Vegas based band, Bonafide, who showed class.

Brick and Lace did themselves proud as they did "Never Gonna Get It", "Bad To The Bone" as well as their big hit song "Love Is Wicked".

The 2008 Reggae Sumfest came to a resounding end with the great reggae icon John Holt reeling off hit after hit including: "Ali Baba", "Love I Can Feel", "They will Rob You" and "Carpenter".

Chris Brown's Mom Feels Rihanna used Vodoo on her son.

rihanna-Cbrown_edit.jpgWe need to do some thorough investigation to find out if voodoo is a common practice in Barbados. It has now come to our understanding that Chris Brown's mom is worried that sexy Rihanna has been using voodoo on her son.

According to her the relationship is moving way too quickly, so she feels that Rihanna must have done something to make her son fall so deeply for her.

Well, if Rihanna has strong Caribbean blood running through her veins "she know weh fi do fi hold har man, She nuh need nuh voodooo fi do dat".

This is hilarious!

Jamaicans could be sought for Iraq and Afghanistan

jamaica_british_flag.jpgFinding it difficult to recruit enough soldiers to meet its international commitments, the British Army is reported to be thinking about signing up Jamaicans to fill the posts.

Looking for soldiers within countries with historical and or current British ties, the British military has been facing a hard time getting and retaining soldiers with its engagements in Iraq and continued efforts in Afghanistan against the Taliban.

Already employing around 1200 soldiers from foreign, including commonwealth countries, the British army already has about 600 soldiers in its ranks.

The Brits continue to consider sending a selection team to Jamaica, a former colony of Britain that remains a member of the Commonwealth.

Statement on behalf of David Smith

By: Lord Anthony Gifford QC, Jacqueline Samuels-Brown and Tom Tavares-Finson, Attorney-at-Law

david_tracey_smith.jpgWe have had full consultations with David and Tracey Smith and their local attorneys-at-law Barnett & Associates, during a visit to the Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI), following the restraint order obtained by the Attorney General of TCI on 11th July 2008, which has prevented them from using their assets in the TCI. They have authorised us to issue this statement.

We have recommended a process aimed at obtaining the discharge of the restraint order and securing the return of the computers and documents which were seized from them on 14th July 2008.

On 17th July 2008 the Supreme Court in TCI imposed a gag order preventing further disclosure of the restraint order proceedings, so that we are not at liberty to give details of this process.

We have also held consultations in relation to the general situation of David Smith, Olint and its members. Olint and David Smith enjoyed an excellent reputation for fulfilling their obligations to their membership up to March 2006 when the Financial Services Commission (FSC), without warning, raided their offices, seized their electronic and other records, and issued a Cease and Desist Order against them.

These events caused Olint to be deprived of their records for a month, and at the same time there were multiple demands by members for their funds. The accounting and record keeping systems were dislocated to an extent which to this day has not been resolved. Many members were inadvertently credited with more gains than had been earned for them, and in some instances this led to overpayment when they requested their funds.

Since March 2006 Olint has had to move its operations to TCI, address continued demands from club members, and pursue litigation against both the FSC and NCB up to the level of the Court of Appeal. On 18th July 2008 it won its appeal against NCB, which had ordered Olint to close its account. Its appeal against FSC, relating to the validity of the Cease and Desist Order, is pending before the Court of Appeal and will be vigorously pursued, and an

early date is being sought.

David Smith wishes club members and the wider public to know that at all times his intentions and activities have been directed towards honestly fulfilling his obligations towards his members. He has not applied the funds of members to his own use.

However, as a result of the pressures and hostile actions mentioned above, Olint has been unable to deal expeditiously with its accounting problems. Time is needed to conduct a full audit of members' accounts and balances.

David Smith wishes us to say that he is deeply sorry that members have suffered delay, disappointment and extreme anxiety as a result of the difficulties of Olint. If he is permitted to do so, he commits himself to fulfilling his obligations and making payments to members within nine months. He asks members to bear in mind his record of conscientious achievement.

Keisha Cole and Akon scored big at Sumfest

sumfest_08_Keyshia_Cole_edit.jpg

Keyshia Cole and Akon delivered big time for their fans as the first of 2 International Nights kicked off at Sumfest, in Catherine Hall, Montego Bay, on Friday, July 18, 2008.

sumfest_08_akon_edit.jpg

Keyshia Cole captivated her audience from the word go as she started off with the song "Should Have Let You Go".

Cole, along with her dancers and backup singers, displayed excellent stage presence which was punctuated by some crisp choreographed dance moves as she took her audience through a musical journey.

sumfest_08_K-Cole_edit.jpg

She sang her heart out as she did "Should Have Cheated". She danced up a storm on stage as she sang "Give It Up To Me", her collaboration with dancehall super star Sean Paul.

She then went into a soulful mood and bonded with her audience as she sang the love ballads "Just Like You" and "Send from Heaven".

Keyshia raised the temperature in Catherine Hall as she put her beautiful voice to good use behind the beautiful song "Lonely".

The R&B super star finished on a high with two of her mega hit songs "Last Night" and "Let It Go" bringing an end to a wonderful performance which the crowd truly appreciated.

sumfest_08_akon_2_edit.jpg

The introduction of the Senegalese born singer, Akon by his DJ, sparked 'nuff' excitement among the audience. Comically dressed in a Scottish kilt, DJ Benedict whipped the crowd into a frenzy by playing some 'tough' hip hop and dancehall selections to the delight of the crowd.

The hype of his introduction was justified by Akons performance as the singer gave his audience a truly exciting performance.

sumfest_08_LUST_edit.jpg

'It was a party going on' up at Catherine Hall as Akon had the crowd dancing away to the song "It's a Shake Down". He then told the audience that "We Taking Over" and showed his versatility and his love for dancehall by doing a remix of Baby Cham's "Ghetto Story".

The crowd sang along as Akon did the soul stirring song "In The Ghetto", as well as "Soul Survivor" and "Locked Up".

sumfest_08_tamichin_edit.jpg

Akon was joined by one of Jamaica's upcoming super stars, the talented singer, Tami Chin, for their song "Frozen".

The party kept going as the people danced away when Akon did "Bartender" and "Dangerous".

As is the case with most of Akon's performances, he jumped off the stage and over the barriers in order to get closer to, according to him, his real fans in the general section.

Akon, although drawing out his act a bit too long, finished just as good as he started with songs such as "Nobody", "Want To Be Started Something" and the song "So Much Love", a tribute to the people from the African continent.

sumfest_08_courtney_John_edit.jpg

Jamaican group LUST showed that we do have our own class acts in Jamaica. The group comprising of Lukie D, Thriller U, Singing Melody and Tony Curtis displayed a high standard throughout their performance which the crowd enjoyed to the last minute.

LUST could do nothing wrong for their audience and started off their performance by blessing the place with the song "Let It Be" which they did in Accapella style.

They then went into overdrive with the songs "She Got Me" and "Run Free". Thriller U took a piece of the cake by singing the songs "I Never Love This Way Again", which he sang sweetly on the Far East rhythm.

sumfest_08_pressure_edit.jpg

Lukie D chipped in and kept up the momentum with "Center Of Attraction". Tony Curtis represented with "Love Should Have Brought You Home", while Singing Melody sang "Shower Me With Your Love".

LUST had the girls weak as they went through other hit songs including "Girl You Lied To Me" ,and their present monster hit song "Just As I Am" which the crowd sang along to word for word.

Courtney John, formerly known as Yogi, gave a good performance which was also of a high standard. John showed that he was a class act as he did songs such as "When You Can", "I Go Crazy", "Come To My Place", a Teddy Prendergast original.

He also rocked the crowd with the song "Nothing But Smooth Sailing" on the Baltimore rhythm, made popular by the outstanding group, the Tamlins.

The ever militant Lutan Fyah, as usual was a true ambassador for his home town, Spanish Town, and paid tribute to that community with the song "St.Jago Delavega".

sumfest_08_lutanFyah_edit.jpg

He then kept true to his religion as he sang "Selassie I Mightier".

Lutan scored big when he performed the songs "Save The Juvenile", "Rasta Still De Bout" and "Blood Stain".

sumfest_08_queen_ifrica_edit.jpg

Queen Ifrika represented for the ladies and made her presence felt in Catherine Hall as she did the songs "A Nuh Every Body A Rub", "Randy" and her big hit song "Below the Waist".

Jah Cure, performing in his home town of Montego Bay, didn't disappoint. The Danger Zone recording artiste kept the crowd alive as he sang for his people. He told them what he was "Longing For" and said that "I Know Jah Jah Bless Me".

He commendably paid tribute to the great Bob Marley, Dennis Brown and other pioneer artistes who he said paved the way for him.

sumfest_08_JahCure_edit.jpg

Skanking away on stage, Cure told the ladies to "Run Come Love Mi Tonight". He later asked, "Girl A Weh Yu Deh From When?"

The crowd sang along as he did the soul stirring song "Reflection". He connected with the ladies as he sang "Love Is" and "Only For You".

Cure topped off a delightful performance with the songs "Nuh Build Great Man" and "Sticky".

sumfest_08_richieSpice_edit.jpg

Richie Spice brought the curtains down on the proceeding as Co Co Tea who was originally scheduled to do so, reportedly declined, prior to the event, as he and the organizers of Sumfest were said to have had some contractual disagreement.

Spice, nevertheless, was evidently not phased by the task at hand and ended the event on a high note delivering songs such as "Babylon Falling', "Gideon Boot", "Blood Again" and "Earth A Run Red".

Beenie Man ruled Sumfest Dancehall Night

By: Dave Lindo
Photography By: Milton Raynor

sumfest_08_beenieMan_edit.jpg

When the smoke cleared, it was the Doctor Beenie Man who was left standing, as the 16th staging of Reggae Sumfest got into full swing on its Dancehall Night, Thursday, July 17, 2007.

Beenie Man capitalized on his arch rival, Bounty Killer's mistake of 'name calling', when he called Beenie Man a 'fish' which earned the 'Ground Gadd' some hefty boos. Beenie smartly ignored Bounty's remarks, dug deep and did a truly professional set at the end of a very successful night for the organizers of the reggae festival.

"Bounty a mi artiste still, yu affe just si wid him, mi forgive him still," Beenie said before setting the place on fire reeling off hits after hits.

It was sheer pandemonium as the Ruff Kut band sweetly strummed out the Shaka Shaka rhythm as Beenie started his set with songs such as: "Red", "Yu a Licky Back" and the original song on the rhythm "Chaka Chaka". At which time dancer Shelly Belly ran on stage and did the shelly belly dance and the 'chain swinging' stunt which caused much excitement among the crowd.

sumfest_08_mavado_edit.jpg

With hands, flags and lighters waving in the air, the Doctor continued the 'operation on his patients'. He had them moving to other hit songs such as: "Never Stop From Trying" and "Get Mi Mad".

Beenie continued on a more serious note unleashing some songs for the gangsta' including, "Tink Wi Nuh Know" and "Memories".

He again represented for the girls with "Wickedest Slam", "Hum Hum" and "Proper Fix" which resulted in the girls screaming uncontrollably.

The 'Gully Gad', Mavado stood tall for the alliance and gave what was truly a memorable performance. The introduction of the 'gangsta for life' drew a big response from the crowd. He kicked off his set on a high note with "Top Shotta Nuh Shoot and Miss". Seemingly in a no nonsense mood, the gun fingers and lighters were in the air as he went into "Chat Too Much".

sumfest_08_bounty_edit.jpg

Catherine Hall turned into one big choir as the crowd sang along to Mavado's "Amazing Grace".

The man from Cassava Piece was in full flight as he dropped hit songs such as: "Full Clip" and "Real Mckoy".

Mavado showed that he is a heavy weight in the dancehall arena and kept the vibes with "Touch De Road". He showed off his love making skills to the girls as he teased them with "Squeeze Har Breast".

The place got even more insane as Mavado belted out "Even If Mi Lef The Gully" and "I’m So Special". With his choir in tow, Mavado capped off a really big erformance with the songs "I'm On The Rock" and "We shall Over Come".

sumfest_08_busy_signal_edit.jpg

Another Alliance member, in the form of Busy Signal, was also a big performer of the night.

Busy showed that he has stepped up his game as an artiste, and blazed a big fire around Catherine Hall with songs such as: "Mi Nuh Fraid a Nuh Bwoy", "Rising To The Top", "Not Going Down" and "Full Clip".

The crowd erupted as he 'sound the big thing' with his big hit songs "Bad Man Place" and "Bleach a Night".

Busy could do nothing wrong for his audience and continued on a high note with the big song, "Unkown Number" which had the crowd singing along, as well as the soul stirring song "These Are The Days".

sumfest_08_spice_edit.jpg

He got even busier and went back to the song which placed him on the music map, "Step Out". He called on Alliance member, Bling Dawg, who represented well as he did the song "On The Battle Field".

Busy Signal tormented the girls and had them in a frenzy as he did "Cool Baby". All hell broke loose when he called some girls on stage and did his big hit song "Wine Pon De Edge".

The 'Warlord' Bounty Killer, stepped out on stage at 3:58 am, and in his normal 'cross and angry' mood, had his fans jumping to signature songs, "Eagle And The Hawk", "War Lord Nuh Business" and "Can't Believe Mi Eyes".

sumfest_08_assassin_edit.jpg

Being the poor people's 'Governor', he drew for the socially conscious song, "Anytime".

Bounty loosened up and had the girls grooving to songs such as: "A Mi Same One" and "Any Weh Punaany Deh". He changed gears as he did "Fat P--- P---Girls".

Bounty spoiled what was one of his big performances, by calling Beenie Man a 'Fish', which had the crowd booing their disapproval, which created a disappointing ending to his set.

Addi, 'the teacher', staying clear from the controversy, showed respect to both Bounty Killer and Beenie Man. He went down to business and treated his many fans to an action filled set.

sumfest_08_ninja_edit.jpg

Opting to use tracks instead of a band, Kartel kept a highly intensified performance throughout, and ripped the place apart with songs such as: "Sen On", "Bad Man Nuh Throw Wud" and "Dis Bad Man Yu Ge Gun Shot".

Kartel stepped into higher heights with "Any Man Weh A Snort". He got back to basics with early songs such as: "Weh Yu A Sey" and "Knack It".

sumfest_08_vybz_kartel_edit.jpg

Fire works went off all around Catherine Hall as Kartel sang "Nuh Badda Dan I". The Portmore Empire King combined with one of his lieutenants, Black Rhino represented well for his teacher with some hard hitting songs.

Kartel continued the onslaught with "When Mi Buss Mi Gun". With some female dancers on stage, he created a storm with "Tik Tok" and "Work It Like A Factory", topping off a strong performance.

Serani rose to the big occasion and had the crowd in the air as he ran on stage and sang "Can't Study People". He continued on that high note with "I Know That She Loves Me". Serani stepped up the pace with "Mamma Still Hungry" and "Gonna Be Sticking Rich" which set Catherine Hall on fire. All hell broke loose as Bugle joined Serani on stage for their big hit song "Doh".

sumfest_08_macka_edit.jpg

Another big fire segment for the night was Anthony B's performance. The original 'fireman' deejay blazed a fiery path with "Bad From Long Time" and "Nuh Bwoy Can Offer Mi Kick". He treated his fans to older gems such as "Damage Already Done" and "Nobody Wah Plant The Corn".

The red green and gold flags, lighters and gun fingers, spread right across the venue as he did "Nah Clash Wid Nuh Man".

Athony B shook the place as he played an excerpt from the BBC interview with the Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Hon. Bruce Golding when Mr. Golding declared that no homosexual gays can be in his cabinet. Anthony B then lit the place up with a song about the cabinet. He ended just as high as he started with "Life Over Death".

sumfest_08_elephantman_edit.jpg

Assassin, another young dancehall star made his mark on Sunmfest scoring with songs such as "Stop Call Wi Name", "Step Pon Dem" and "An Wi Nuh Worry Bout Bad Mind People".

The crowd joined Assassin in singing his big hit songs "Idiot Ting Dat", "We Are Not Afraid" and "Don’t Mek Wi Hole U".

Elephant Man gave a high energy performance with his customary dance songs among others of his catalogue of hit tunes.

Ninja Man, making a cameo appearance tutored the crowd about his one umbrella movement and entertained them with some of his trademark songs.

Munga Honourable, performing on Sumfest for the second time, gave a better performance this time around. Munga showed that he has grown as an artiste and had Catherine Hall moving to song such as "I Come To Take My Place" and "Buss It Mek The Earth Shake". He was in full control as he did "Bad From Mi Born", and "Wine Pon It".

sumfest_08_serani_edit.jpg

Spice, dressed in a beautiful ballerina outfit, gave a short and spicy performance and represented for the girls with "Nuh Fight Over Man" and "Giddy Up Giddy Up", where she showed off her bed room skills with the assistance of a member of the Live Wya Band.

Macka Diamond gave a dazzling performance dishing out lots of cash as the money goddess. She treated her fans to an exciting set with songs such as "Weh Dem TInk", "Lexus and Benz" and "Dun A Ready". She called on Trinidadian, Patrice Roberstson for "Come Mek Wi JAM". Macka finished with "Hoola Hoop" and "Dandy Shandy".

Erup gave a workman like performance, scoring with songs such as "Clip Mi Finger" and "Run Dem Head". Erup showed depth in his performance.

sumfest_08_erup_edit.jpg

Jigsy, from the Bembe and Danger Zone crew, kept the vibes going during the intermission with some classic selections.

Bounty Killer charged by police for Sumfest behavior

Bounty1_westernbembe_arrested.jpgUsing profanity on stage during Thursday night's Dancehall Explosion at Reggae Sumfest 2008, landed Bounty Killer on the wrong side of Jamaica's law enforcement.

Disorderly conduct and using indecent language is the charge that was
handed to Rodney "Bounty Killer" Price, when police met him as he left the stage around 4am. This followed his outburst of curse words at an audience that was not too thrilled with his character assassinations of other artists.

The boos sent Killer into furious mode and once he was done expressing his displeasure, a court date was in store for him; as he is now bound to attend Montego Bay Magistrate's Court on July 31, 2008.

It was an otherwise rocking night with some of dancehall's hottest keeping things not only lively, but also in order with the regulations for acceptable language at public performances.

Wanting nothing to stand in the way of Sumfest promoters' adherence to these regulations, Commanding Officer for the St. James Police, Superintendent Steve McGregor has asked them again to work hard at reinforcing the rules amongst performers.

Friday and Saturday nights will see Sumfest showcase more popular artists including Akon, Jah Cure, Keisha Cole, Cocoa Tea and Queen Ifrica tonight; and more heavy weights like: Etana, Tarrus Riley, T-Pain, Beres Hammond and Little Wayne winding up the annual festivities on Saturday night.

NCB ordered not close Olint's Account

NCBJ.jpgOn Friday, July 18, Olint was granted a reprieve from the Court of Appeal who granted the embattled alternative investment scheme an injunction blocking NCB (National Commercial Bank) from closing its accounts.

Justice Seymour Panton has recommended a speedy trial for the lawsuit filed against NCB by Olint. The Justice expressed concerns about banks who think they have the power to close a customers accounts without evidence of illegal activities taking place. There is also the suspicion that there is a conspiracy among banks to destroy the scheme.

On receiving news that Olint's accounts in the Turks and Caicos had been frozen, NCB's lawyers applied to the Court for directions on how to deal with the handling of these accounts. However, the lawyers objected to this application, claiming that NCB is acting on rumours.

Dave Garcia, the General Manager with responsibility for General Council at NCB, said that the bank will be filing an appeal with the Privy Council.

Visa Application System to be Changed

US-Embassy-logo.jpgAccording to information on Radio Jamaica there will be changes made to the visa application system at the United States Embassy in Kingston.

The problem lies with the online application system which has been causing hold ups as persons are making several appointments.

A briefing was held yesterday with the Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Janice Jacobs, where it was revealed that some travel agents were also securing blocks of appointments. She also stated that in the upcoming year a new system will be put in place to remove the problem.

The proposed plan to be executed in order to alleviate the problem is to have customers pay the application fee when they book their appointments online instead of paying the fee otherwise as is being done presently.

They believe this will lead to a decline in the problem they are currently facing.

"St. Mary Mi Come From" Launch 2008

edit_capleton_launch_banner.jpg

The launch of the seventh annual staging of "A St. Mary Mi Come From" took place at the 'Top of World' at Jamaica Pegasus, on Tuesday evening. Though off to a late start, the show progressed into an exciting evening.

edit_capleton_launch_capleton.jpg

The show began with the singing of the 'National Anthem', followed by the welcome and opening remarks by Mrs. Norma Brown. Mr. Desmond Young, Mr. Bryan, Ms. Kemp, Mrs. Barnett and Constable Rochelle followed with greetings.

edit_capleton_launch_desmond.jpg

Guest speaker, Mr. Miquel Lorne, spoke about the history of 'A St. Mary Mi Come From', and his disappointment in the lack of recognition this production has been getting from the Jamaican population. He expressed that as this is one of the most charitable events it should be more widely recognized.

edit_capleton_launch_group1.jpg

Mr. Clifton "Capleton" Bailey, in his response, explained why he primarily gives back to health and educational institutions. He quoted from the Ethiopian prayer which states, "aged protected, sick nourished, infants cared for". He also pointed out that his majesty, during his reign, placed a lot of emphasis on both health and education. He then delivered an Acapella new track which addressed the present crime situation and made mention of the new presidential candidate for the United States, Barack Obama.

edit_capleton_launch_jodi_noddy.jpg

"A St. Mary Mi Come From" has been successful in exposing fresh new talent, as reflected in the performances at the event. Such performances included: Jody-Ann Pantry, Noddy Virtue, Hail Selassie High School and Oberlin High School, whose performance was so excellent in its execution, that they were called back for an encore.

Japanese sound system Barrier Free set to make Fully Loaded debut

Barrier Free in Japan_edit.jpgTop Japanese sound system, Barrier Free, is set to make its debut at the exciting Fully Loaded event which makes its return to Fort Clarence Beach, Portmore, on Sunday, July 27, 2008.

Fully Loaded, staged by Solid Agency, will be making a return to its original base, Fort Clarence Beach, after a 5 year sabbatical.

Barrier Free will be lining up against other heavy weight sounds such as: Red Diamond from the Cayman Islands, the top sound from the west, Interceptor, Swatch, Area Code, Sky Juice, Black Kat with the 'war tanka' himself Pink Panther, the remix masters Renaissance, Code Red, Razz & Biggy, Bass Odyssey and the immortal Stone Love.

There will also be live performances from: Bounty Killer, Mavado, Busy Signal, Elephant Man, Macka Diamond, Bling Dawg, Demarco, Wayne Marshall, Aidonia, Voicemail, Spice and 'Mr. Fully Loaded' Tony Matterhorn.

The Barrier Free crew consist of Doctor and K.S.K. The two friends were fascinated by the sound system business, and with little funds did various manual jobs to raise funds to build the system.

Their sound system has been established for 7 years now and recently won two of the biggest sound clashes in Japan.

Unlike other Japanese sound systems, Barrier Free is from the ghetto of Osaka, Japan. Commenting on the concept behind the name Barrier Free, Doctor said, "There are lots of barriers from languages (and) races. We come to break down all barriers through music."

They are very much looking forward to appearing on Fully Loaded. "I am happy on being on Fully Loaded. "Wi ready to buss the place with bad dub plates, bad talk and special costumes," K.S.K said.

Miracle or obeah?

By: Rootzgirl

Rasta-Girl-Posters.jpgBwoy mi seh a serious ting dat believe can kill and believe can cure yu know...but even more serious is de idea dat African spiritual heritage is real real sinting...at least my fren seh she meet a man weh real gifted wid prophecy and sometimes she wonda if tings we know as obeah or voodoo can be used fe do positive tings.

We did a chat bout sacrifice and blood bath and dem tings dey dat mi ongle hear bout, and she go chip een seh she actually had an experience wid de bird blood ting. At first mi couldn't believe sey she of all people would a get inna dem tings deh…also mi neva even know sey she did have a real serious sickness neither.

Den she start gi fe har experience and tell mi sey afta har man dead and lef har sick wid HIV she neva know wey fi do. Since a foreign she did dey and dem never even have any medicine fe help people with HIV at dat time, she was feeling completely out of luck and was basically waiting to die.

Den she link up with a Jamaican like harself who was trying fi mek it in de entertainment biz a foreign and him tell har sey, him get nuff fight a Jamaica and if it wasn't fe him precious counselor, who was a prophet and who pray fi him...him wouldn't even reach so far.

A deh suh har curiousity perk and she ask di man fi talk plain and explain whey him a chat bout. Den when she get di full hundred she beg him fi hook har up tuh.

Well she nearly flip out when she tek de trip go a Jamaica an meet de prophet man who start fe tell har all har business, tings whey she wonda how him even know. She sey him just a repeat sey 'something is wrong down there' but she neva waan tell him nutten. Him seemed shy to come out with the fact that him se seh she was sick wid HIV. She sey she had to tek serious ting mek joke, when de man finally seh... "a going fix down dere fe you" and nuh ask if him nuh mix up some concoction inna one metal bucket and when embarrassment a kill him, him even ask har whey fi do next! Mi sey him put har behind one screen and tell har fi stand up naked over di bucket a stuff whey him set pon fire. Mi backfoot, it teck heart cause it did a smoke more dan a blaze. Him tell har fi do some sinting deh, wi not even a guh mention some a di details. She did kinda skeptical, but she do dem anyway cause if it mean she can save har life she woulda try anyting. Following what she now refers to as har 'backside smoke out' the prophet also directed har to sacrifice a dove and she haffi drink di blood and dat was not funny to har at all, but she needed some miracle and did it along with prayers.

She say she wouldn't do it again fi noting, but to dis day, although nuff doctors tell har seh she ago dead from AIDS, she has lived longer than any of them thought possible at de time. Of course she now has the antiretroviral medicine, but it took years before she got it. In her mind her belief in the prophet and har prayers saved har from peril, but she always laughs when she thinks of the heat from the bucket rising up into you know where.

Busy Signal stranded 'Pon de Edge'.

BUSY_charts_2.jpgAfter performing at the St. Kitts 12th Annual Music Festival, Busy Signal found himself without transportation to get back the the hotel.

Busy claims that he was left behind because he performed the song, "Pon De Edge" which he was asked not to do.

The Chairman of the Music Festival, Faron Lawrence, said that he was unaware that Busy was left behind and knows nothing about him being asked not to sing that song. He explained that performers are usually provided with transportation to take them back to their hotels, but sometimes they are also told that transporting all of them is not possible and they will have to make their own arrangements. Sometimes artistes opt to remain behind to watch the show. Lawrence says he was not aware if this was the case with Busy Signal.

Olint Corp closed

David_Smith_olintcorp_edit.jpgAlternative investors were dealt another blow when embattled investment club Olint Corporation Limited advised its investors on Monday that the entity's office in New Kingston would be closed to the public until further notice. Club members were informed via email that the close was as a result of threats to the lives of employees.

"It is with some regret that we advise that, as a result of threats to staff members, including a bomb threat within the last few days which is being taken seriously, the Club Member Care Office will be closed to the public as of Monday, July 14, 2008. All customer care lines and email lines will be opened to facilitate communication with you notwithstanding this safety measure which we have had to impose," the letter stated.

Less than three weeks ago, reports surfaced that the National Futures Association (NFA), a regulatory organisation for the United States futures industry, had filed a complaint to its business conduct committee against I-Trade FX LLC (and one of its principals, Isaac Martinez), a company NFA alleges Smith was a principal of.

The letter to Olint's customers stated that, "the last 18 months have been testing ones for the club, as we were clearly faced with conspiratorial scheme(s) since 2006... ".

Yesterday, the Financial Services Commission (FSC) also issued a statement in which it stressed that if Olint has not made payments to its investors, the public should be aware that "this is not due to any enforcement action taken by the FSC". "The public should be reminded that under the court order, Olint and its directors are free to honour obligations to their investors," FSC stated.

When do women become lazy in a relationship?

By: Buffilous

Buffilous_2.jpgYow what's up my peeps. Fi real the other day my friends and I were involved in a discussion and somehow the topic got around to 'why and under what circumstances do women become lazy in a relationship'. To tell the truth the argument got so heated that at one point we had to remind each other that it wasn't a quarrel, just a friendly discussion!

My sistren Patricia claim that when you find out that everything you do, the man doan appreciate it; an all him do is complain and act like it wasn't anything much, then it's time to meck him start fending for himelf!

According to har if you get up everyday, a wash, clean, cook and teck care a di man and him doan even spend the time to say thanks, and start all hype up on you, then why bother. If him even have the last shirt to wear and a beg you to wash a couple more, she sey you must ask him if him have fin hand and lef him meck him fend fi himself.

Well a few a di sistren dem sey dat harsh and how woman must find odda
ways fi meck dem point, but Sharon was plain and to the point. She sey dat woman must start lazy pon man when him start to have odda woman out a road.

She fling inna di argument dat it nuh meck nuh sense you a slave out pon him and him a teck next woman go joy ride and have fun. You a do di dutty work a yard and di odda woman a enjoy all a di thrills. Inna dem case deh, meck di odda woman do di wuck tuh.

Well to tell you di truth, not everyone a dem agree, some sey it nuh inna dem fi become lazy, while others say dem nuh watch nuh face, if you violate then help youself!

Well as for mi, well…if di man deserve mi energy him wi get it, but if him gi mi reason fi tink odda wise...den meck him find one helper!

Drama at Little Ochi Seafood Festival

littleochi_seafood_festival_edit.jpgYardflex went to Alligator Pond to take in the Little Ochi Seafood
Festival
and honestly the venue sell off. The place cram so till, but to tell the truth I had a problem hearing the performers as it seemed as there were competitions from three different segments at the venue.

Upstairs at the upper deck bar it was like a dance session, in the middle there was the stage show and out front music was blasting again.

Then not to mention the security guard that enjoyed drawing his knife.
Yardflex observed him on at least four occasions arguing with 'unwanted' patrons who he felt came in illegally and worse were there selling stuff. The knife came out and there he was threatening to 'done dem!'.

With all that though the steamed and fry fish went like hot bread, shrimps, lobster and other seafood were in abundance. Romain, George Nooks, Nikiesha Barnes and others tried to do their best, but performing on tracks under those conditions, never made it at all. The Dragonaires totally dominated and had the crowd from start to finish.

Nike and VP Records Join Forces to Release

Olympic Sprinter Asafa Powell’s Train for Speed Workout on ITUNES

Mix Includes Exclusive Track by Dancehall Star Mavado

mavado_asafa_nike_edit.jpgNike and Olympic sprinter Asafa Powell have teamed up with Reggae label VP Records to create a Nike Sport Music workout featuring the exclusive track, "On The Go (Faster Than Bullet)," by one of the athlete's favorite artists, Mavado. Called Asafa Powell: Train for Speed, the 35-minute interval workout is coached by Asafa over a reggae/dancehall soundtrack. Among the genre-defining songs included on the mix are some of reggae's greatest artists of the past, present, and future, providing a musical backdrop for running that is both unique and effective. After all, two of Jamaica's greatest exports are music and sprinters—it was only a matter of time before they came together in one pulse-pounding project.

The only athlete to have run the 100-meter dash in under 9.8 seconds more than once (he did it five times), Asafa Powell knows speed. He has distinguished himself as one of the world's fastest humans, having held the world record in the 100 for three years, from 2005-2008. In the Asafa Powell: Train for Speed workout, Asafa coaches runners through a 35-minute training session with four high-speed intervals that descend in length. The goal of the workout is to increase an athlete's endurance and speed, with musical motivation coming from the athlete's homeland.

Reggae music is often associated with laid-back island rhythms, but there are several subgenres that up the tempo to a runner's pace, including dancehall, a style that has been influential on hip-hop since its inception. VP Records has been one of reggae's most fervent advocates since 1979, becoming the world's largest independent Caribbean music label. The tracks selected for Asafa Powell: Train for Speed run the gamut of what VP has to offer, mixing in classic dancehall cuts like Shaggy's early hit, "Big Up," and pioneering ragamuffin tunes like Half Pint's "Greetings," with newer songs like Sean Paul's "Deport Them" and "Hyperventilating" by up-and-comer Tami Chynn. The playlist peaks with an exclusive track recorded by one of Asafa's favorite VP artists, Mavado, appropriately titled "On The Go (Faster Than Bullet)."

Nike selected Mavado for the project based on Asafa Powell's respect for the emerging dancehall artist's music. One of the hottest new voices to hit the international reggae scene, Mavado recorded "On The Go (Faster Than Bullet)" as an homage to the sprinter, as well as an inspirational anthem celebrating the island of Jamaica and its music. "It's a great honor to be recognized as one of Jamaica's top entertainers and to be a part of this project with Nike," says Mavado. "It's a responsibility I take very seriously. I wanted to put out a very positive message on the track as it would be representing not only myself, but Asafa Powell and Jamaica."

"Mavado is one of the leading voices of the Jamaican youth," stated Olivier Chastan, Vice-President of VP Records. "He is a source of inspiration to them by exemplifying that they too can achieve great things despite life's hardships. Music can help your dreams come true in the same way that sports can. This is the message that Mavado and Asafa carry to the world over on behalf of Jamaica and its people."

The track, which includes the lyrics, "Jamaica/The greatest thing inna life/Our music and sports fi try," has a galvanizing message that will no doubt be adopted as a patriotic anthem for Jamaica's supporters around the world as the Olympic Games approach this summer "On The Go (Faster Than Bullet)" was produced by Shane Brown for Juke Boxx Productions.

The latest installment in the Nike+ training series, Asafa Powell: Train for Speed is available exclusively in the Nike Sport Music section of the iTunes Store for $9.99.

Italian Court Frees Weed

marijuana11_edit.jpgIn Italy a new ruling by the Supreme Court of Cassation has sided with the Rastafarian religion's treatment of marijuana as a sacred sacrament.

The news from Rome hit the streets Friday morning, as a case brought before appeal judges against a reggae musician sentenced to 16 months in prison by a lower court in Perugia, was overturned.

Virtually unheard of in Roman Catholic Italy, Rastafarians were presented to the court as a faith that allows its members to smoke even 10 grams of marijuana daily.

In the ruling the Court of Cassation stated, "Members of the Rastafari faith were entitled to have in possession 'abundant' amounts of marijuana since smoking is an integral part of their religion."

Heterosexual Pride to be celebrated in New York

heterosexual-gender.jpgA Straight Pride Parade will roll out on August 31, 2008 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, just one day ahead of the annual Caribbean Labor Day Parade.

In a press release sent out recently by members of the reggae community, who have organized this event as a response to gay groups coming down hard on some dancehall music; the parade was justified as being, "...a chance for Heterosexuals to gather together and proudly embrace their sexuality. The Parade will also allow reggae and dancehall fans who are in New York City for the Labor Day celebrations to get together and celebrate reggae, dancehall and family in love and unity. Adults are encouraged to bring their children along for the celebrations, as the event will be family oriented."

Not only have gay groups launched massive global advocacies against what they call reggae's long history of gay intolerance, they have also been successful in hitting artists hard, in the pocket, by pushing for show cancellations. Their aim is reportedly to stop reggae and dancehall artists from promoting anti-gay violence, harassment and bigotry through lyrics.

The release said further: "Gay friends and gay relatives must be left at home or worse kept in the closet."

Renato Adams throws in the towel

reneto_adams_retire.jpgYesterday was Renato Adams's final day in the force as a policeman. After more than 30 years he has now officially retired. The controversial cop says he has no regrets...well...except one...that marauding gunmen in Tivoli Gardens confronted the security forces in July 2001.

The senior cop added that criminal elements causing chaos in the society are getting too much press. The crime fighter, who has been hailed by many communities in Jamaica as a hero, is featured in the popular Jamaican soap, Royal Palm Estate.

Bruce Golding to get tough

Bruce GoldingProfile_fightcrime.jpgPrime Minister Bruce Golding announced that in two weeks time the country will see his strategy for fighting the spiraling crime rate. He said that certain bodies might be offended with the actions that will be taken, but he refuses to leave the country ransom to criminals. Of course, it goes without saying that the entire country is waiting to see what this unveiling will be and more importantly...will it be effective.

What’s poppin’

Sean Paul pops in Basketball camp

sean_Paul_edit_1.jpgBig up to Sean Paul who took the time out to pop in on a basketball camp to give encouraging words to some children.

One eleven year old broke down, crying tears of joy as she never really believed the rumours that the DJ would be coming. She was overwhelmed with joy when she was asked to sing with the Grammy Award-winning artiste in front of her fellow campers. "When the people said he would come, I thought it wasn't true and they were just joking... I never thought in my life that I would see him." She was quoted as saying in the Prince Albert Daily Herald.

Sean Paul dropped by to offer advice about life to several hundred campers who listened intently while sitting on the huge gymnasium floor at Montreal's Dawson College. "There are ups and downs in life, just like waves in the sea," he said. "when you're up on top you're feeling good, but that's not the only feeling you need to get used to in your heart, in your brain, in your soul."

Nip it in the bud

The queen reigns_babyTash_edit.jpgNo, don't tell me Baby Tash just came into the biz after she walked away with the title of Magnum Queen of the dancehall and already she is enshrouded in mix up. What's this we hearing of her being threatened? According to top reports the DJ started receiving threatening phone calls after winning the competition. No, it's a big disappointment, dancehall is really going to the dogs.

Commentary

Beyond the hype that is dancehall

dancehall_reggae.jpgIf the latest report from Soundscan is anything to be believed...and it is rated as the best ever electronic network than can estimate album sales...then no wonder these artistes are demanding astronomical performance fees.

With the poor sales reflected on their album performance on the international level, one wonders why some artistes put out so many albums per year. Maybe there lies the cause of the poor sales. What artistes need to do is give that last album time to permeate the market, 'let it soak' and give the people time to enjoy the product...and then let them look forward to the other one. What is happening now is that by the time the fans have that copy in their hands, then along comes another!

Of course some could argue that one reason for the poor sales would be the illegal downloading of songs, but what about the other strong performers...aren't their songs being downloaded too? It's time to face the cold hard facts, dancehall music has become nothing but a 'tracing' match at best and a show of 'bad manism'. For those who have a good product and are still facing poor sales, well, they could be casualties of 'war'. Just as good law abiding cops must come under the banner of being corrupt when Jamaican people are cursing the force, good products will sometimes get lost in the controversy that has now become dancehall.

As dancehall music sales continue to slide the red alert is out and steps must now be taken to rescue the music. This cause is not helped either by the gay rights group out there doing everything to sabotage it...but must we help them too? Start cleaning up the music. Go back to the days when dancehall was nice. Just because there is a message to spread doesn't mean you have to do so in poor taste. If you truly love these artistes as you claim, stop downloading and start buying!
Producers must ensure that they put out good quality music. No inferior production please! Invest in promotion. Going around pestering people to give you a write up instead of investing in good PR will not go a long way. Advertise – if someone see something often enough, be it on the internet, papers, a jingle...they will remember it and that could pay off in sales.

Take the music seriously...after all it is a business..a very lucrative one at that. Having said that, below are the results of album sales from Soundscan, collected from over 17,000 music stores in US.

Artiste - Album - Approx. # Units Sold - Estimated Sale Period

Stephen Marley - Mind Control - 120,000 - 52 weeks
Collie Buddz - Collie Buddz - 65,000 - 47 weeks
Matisyahu - No Place To Be - 58,000 - unknown
Various Artistes - Reggae Gold 2007 - 46,000 - 50 weeks
Ky-Mani Marley - Radio - 29,000 - 35 weeks
Shaggy - Intoxication - 20,000 - 30 weeks
Various Artistes - Strictly The Best 36 - 18,000 - 78 weeks
Mavado - Gangsta For Life - 16,000 - 52 weeks
Richie Spice - In The Streets To Africa - 13,000 - unknown
Jah Cure - True Reflection - 10,000 - 45 weeks
I-Wayne - Book Of Life - 9,000 - 30 weeks
Elephant Man - Lets Get Physical - 7,000 - 10 weeks

Remember, it is important to note that Soundscan offers, at best, a good guesstimate of sales in the U.S. It does not cover Europe, where dancehall and reggae in particular are extremely popular, or the rest of the World.

RAINBOWVIBES.COM- The Caribbean's first Gay & Lesbian Social Network launches from Jamaica

rainbowvibes_logo_edit.jpgJamaica, dubbed one the most homophobic nations on earth has spawned the Caribbean's first Gay and Lesbian Social Network, Rainbowvibes.com, where Caribbean gay life meets the world.

"The site is an online hub for Caribbean gays, lesbians and bisexual people living at home and overseas and their friends in South America, Latin America, USA, Europe and Canada. Now they can all connect with each other in a single space online." Andrea* added.

The site is the brainchild of Matthew Raine*, a gay Jamaican IT executive, who now lives in Canada and Andrea Rainford*, a Jamaican lesbian marketing executive who lives in Kingston, Jamaica. "The need was glaring. The nature of most Caribbean countries has made it a challenge to meet and connect face to face. Here, online, there are no limits. Having a social network of our own was something we craved ourselves and had the know how to get done, so we said let's be bold and give this Pride gift to our community." Matthew* said.

The site was launched to coincide with Pride Month, a global celebration of gay rights and culture. It already has members from over 20 countries world wide. Being picked up in the British, Canadian and Latin American press and blogging community.

Rainbowvibes.com has all the interactive features of a social network like Facebook. Members are able to create and join groups, add music, events, videos, chat, make friends, find dates, create and join discussions, write blogs and read news from around the Caribbean and the rest of the World. "Our focus is on making the site a fun, vibrant and meaningful online destination where our members are happy to spend time and tell their friends about it too." Matthew* explained.

Rainbowvibes.com went on line during Pride Month, June 16, 2008 and "we're expecting it to do great things."

Bembe Gone Global

By: Dave Lindo

BembeSquad.jpg

Bembe Thursday, the 'hype' dancehall event staged each Thursday at Weekenz in Kingston, Jamaica has become a global phenomenon in less than two years.

The idea for Bembe originated when former Stone Love selector, Richie Feelings, jokingly told his friends that he is a bembe marble and staged a dance of the same name.

As Jigsy, a member of the Bembe Squad explained, "A bembe marble is one of those big marbles, so Feelings said that he was bembe marble. The owner of Weekenz approached Richie to do a weekly event at his spot so he (Richie) linked us up and we decided to do it and call it Bembe Thursday. At first we took it as a joke - we never dreamed that it would get so big.

Feelings also invited selectors Razz and Biggy, Jigsy and Penny Bling to form the Bembe Squad. In a very short time it became the place to be on a Thursday night in the capital city. "People from all over started to attend, by midnight the place is normally jam packed." Jigsy said.

"Bembe is for the girls, still we have a ratio of 10 -1 on a weekly basis and we play just vibes music; all kind of music to suit everyone."

From the onset, Bembe Thursday has always been an early event with the vibes increasing by 10 pm and ending at 2 am. "We only go later when we have a special event like a birthday party or something," Jigsy said.

The event has become so popular that presently it has spread across the various continents. "It global right now, you have Bembe in England on a Friday, Bembe Wednesday in Japan, Bembe Thursday in Cayman and Miami, Bembe Sunday in Canada and even in Australia they have Bembe."

Asked how the Bembe Squad manages to play at so many events, Jigsy said, "We basically rotate among ourselves. Both locally and overseas, we go to the other countries when they are having (a) special event.

Most of the top artistes pass through Bembe Thursday, as well as top selectors including: Coppershot, Chromatic, ZJ Liquid and Bun Bun.

Jisgy disclosed that Bembe will be on fire this summer, "It will be just crazy vibes. We will be having some big events including my birthday party on August 7, 2008.

D'Angel Prepping up for Sumfest

Vybz Kartel & D'Angel at the grand opening of Club Amazon July 4.JPGD'Angel seems to be busily 'sprucing up' her stage performance, apparently in preparation for her first performance in the upcoming Reggae Sumfest Festival.

So far this month, July 4 and 6, 2008, D'Angel performed for the grand opening of Club Amazon in Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth and the Portland Jerk Festival respectively.

D'Angel had Club Amazon exceeding its 500 capacity by the time she made her 1:00pm entrance. She mingled with the crowd until her 3:00pm performance time. "It was very good to see D'Angel showing up early and taking time out to chill with the audience." a promoter of Amazon Productions said.

She wooed the audience with a spectacular performance and made them even more frenzied when she brought on Vybz Kartel, who performed his latest hits.

Her performance at Portland Jerk Festival was just as exciting as she had the crowd clamouring for more as she performed her anthology of hits.

Artist Wants Compensation for Marley's Image

BobMarleyLionZion_portrait_edit.jpgJurek Zamoyski, who was born in Communist Poland, has always seen Bob Marley's songs as a means to give a voice to the oppressed and poor. Now it saddens him that he is filing a lawsuit against the Marley's Estate and the music and clothing companies that are run by members of the family.

Zamoyski alleges that Zion Rootswear, Fifty-Six Hope Road Music Ltd and Bob Marley Music Inc. have been replicating three of his copyrighted images of Bob Marley on T-shirts onto other objects without his consent and have been selling them worldwide. The three images that have been used are: "Rasta Dreads," "Lion Zion" and "Kaya Man". These images were all painted by Zamoyski. The images were licensed to Jurek International Graphic in the 1990's.

The Jurek International Graphic was in agreement at that time with the Marley Companies to use the images on clothing and other objects. During this period Zamoyski received royalty payments. In 1999 his company ceased operations and terminated all agreements with the Marley Companies, thus none of his designs should be replicated.

He has documented information that his designs were still being marketed and he had not received any compensation since 1999.

Zamoyski has approached the Marleys in an effort to find out what was happening but they refused to speak to him. Even Zamoyski's lawyer has tried resolving the issue with the Marley's but that too proved unsuccessful. The Marleys are not interested in setting up another agreement with Jurek International Graphic, as they feel they have some rights to the images.

Zamoyski is only seeking compensation for his work.

Suspect in Florida's Triple Murder Nabbed in Kingston

handcuff2_EDIT.jpgThe suspect in the murder of Poison Dart sound system selectors, Chris Rock aka Michael Rattigan, Tony Montana aka Antonae Neely and their friend Kevin Webster, who goes by the name 'Indian', was nabbed in Kingston, Jamaica by a joint operation by the local police and their American counter parts.

It was an incident which shocked the music fraternity. According to reports coming from Tampa, Florida, the selectors and a group of men got in a heated argument over a sound clash, while they were playing at the Thunderbird Bar in Auburndale, Florida where they play every Friday. Chris Rock reportedly 'backed them off' and the men left.

The men returned the following week and opened fire on the three. Tony Mantana and Chris Rock died on the spot while Webster died at the neighbouring hospital.

Chris Rock, more senior of the two, was a well known selector who played on top sound systems such as Body Gaurd and Nite Tracks, both based in May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica.

He and Tony Montana were integral members of the Poison Dart sound system which is based in Tampa, Florida.

Indian is scheduled to b extradited to the United States to stand trial for the triple murders.

American TV Host Stirs up Controversy about Women and Dancehall Music

anthony_bourdain3001_edit.jpgAnthony Bourdain of the Emmy nominated Travel Channel series, "No Reservations" has stirred up controversy with remarks he made about women and dancehall, on the Jamaican themed episode of his show.

"There's no rootsy, laid back Rasta vibe," he says. "This ain't about standing up for your rights or praising Jah or anything like that. Like Reggaeton, its mutant cousin, dancehall is the hardcore beat behind lyrics concerning for the most part: acquiring possessions, getting respect on the street, beating down perceived enemies and enjoying the physical charms of varied, if not multitudinous bitches."

Asked how she felt about Bourdain's statement, veteran dancehall reggae artiste, Nadine Sutherland says that she was offended but not angry at him as "...that is what is being perpetuated (by our music) so why is it a foreigner can't do it?"

Stahhr says that female artistes such as Lady Saw and Sasha use derogatory terms in their music when referring to other females. Sutherland has also acknowledged that demeaning terms such as 'sketel' and 'gyal' which is similar in meaning to bitch are used in dancehall music. Stahhr also says, "I guess its like the N-word ...some women feel the entiltlement to use it on each other."

Unlike Don Imus, who defended his remarks when he referred to the Rutgers basketball team as "Nappy Headed Hos" by pointing the blaming finger at Hip Hop. Stahhr says she will not "...blame a genre of music that hasn't existed for a century for a mentality that has existed for over a thousand."

Jason Walker, a 20 year Kingstonian, veteran of the dancehall fraternity and the host of WRFG - FM's Caribbean Runnings says that Bourdain "may not be a racist but comes from a racist place..." and is not equipped to tell the dancehall story. "His description does not make room for Buju Banton, Luciano, Tanya Stephens and... Nadine Sutherland."

Walker also goes on to say that when we look back at where our music is coming from there shouldn't be any derogatory comments...there needs to be honest discourse from people in the dancehall culture about the state of the music."

After the Imus controversy, rapper Chamilionaire and others publicly announced that they would be removing the N-word from their music. When asked if Bourdain's comments would spark a similar change in dancehall lyrics, Sutherland said "...someone (needs) to look at this at an individual level... and say: OK, this is wrong. I have been doing this by my lyrical content to the women of my culture and somebody else...is repeating what I have...said and I don't feel comfortable as a person being disrespected." She, however is not optimistic that this change will take place, but she will pray about it. She is hopeful that Bourdain's comments will encourage all of us to look at ourselves and see some sense of shame.

Dancehall Reggae fans acknowledge that even though there is "slackness" in its lyrical content, there are also positive messages.

Carifest C.A.R.E.S. Cancelled

edit_carifest_cares.jpgCarifest C.A.R.E.S. scheduled for July 6, New York, has been cancelled. This years event was meant to sponsor the charitable organization Keep A Child Alive (KACA) by helping them to provide medicine and relief to African children orphaned by the AIDS pandemic, as well as increase AIDS awareness in the community.

One of the many speculations for the cancellation of the festival, apart from the rain and fog, was the lack of confidence that the patrons had in the line up of artistes. Many artistes could not be contracted for this event as anti-gay activist groups vehemently protested certain artistes and their lyrics as homophobic in nature and New York would not have them performing in their city.

Other artistes were either pulled from the line up or unable to perform for other reasons such as: making racist remarks about other artistes; namely Eek-A-Mouse, who made racist remarks attacking white Jewish reggae artiste Matisyahu. Another unnamed artiste boasted about his refusal to wearing condoms, which was not in keeping with the AIDS prevention message of the festival. There is also the concern that the Jamaican artistes were not willing to reduce their performance fees for the charitable event.

Unfortunately, the promotion team, Legendary and Alphonso D'Niscio Brooks, were unable to secure the necessary additional time from the Parks Department to facilitate band changes in order to accommodate replacement artistes. Hence, the poor ticket sales reflected the lack of support from the community who was not impressed with the less than 'star studded' line up of artistes.

Reggae Carifest N.Y.,Inc. apologizes to its patrons and assures that full refunds will be made once tickets are returned to the point of purchase.

No plans are being made to reschedule Carifest C.A.R.E.S. at this time.

Beenie Man Makes Bottles Fly

beenieman_charts.jpgEveryone was anticipating Beenie's performance at the Portland Jerk Festival and when he failed to show bottles started flying.

Beenie Man who was the main act for the show lost his passport and was unable to return home in time for the event.

Efforts to contact the organizers of the show by Beenie Man's Booking agent were unsuccessful prior to the event. Efforts were also made by the organizers to get Beenie on the phone to explain to his fans why he was unable to be there, but this also was unsuccessful.

No Beenie equals angry fans.

Reggae an Important Part of Jamaican Culture - Dr. Chang

jam-reggae.jpgThe Government is to establish a museum of reggae music and artifacts, to represent the struggles and achievements of Jamaican music, and will establish a special initiative to encourage and assist Jamaican film makers to produce works on Jamaican culture.

The announcement was made by Minister of Water and Housing, Dr. Horace Chang, on Thursday July 3, who was giving the welcome address on behalf of Prime Minister, Bruce Golding at a launching reception for the 7th International Crossroads in Cultural Studies Conference. The reception was held at Vale Royal, the Prime Minister's official residence.

Noting that culture remains an important part of "who we are, what we are and how we do what we do," Dr. Chang stated that Jamaica's cultural identity and image worldwide were strongly linked to reggae music, "an indigenous product of which we are very proud."

Describing reggae as an international language of the oppressed, he credited the work of artists like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, whose "lyrics captivated international audiences, unified people in their struggles and served as the basis for negotiating significant truces." Their work, he stressed, "took the themes of rebellion, human rights, love, respect for others and freedom into the far corners of the world and helped pave the way for unity and peace."

Dr. Chang pointed out that reggae is so important to Jamaicans, that the month of February has now been devoted to celebrating it. That celebration included the successful staging of the Reggae Film Festival, as a result of which, a special initiative is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sport, to encourage and assist Jamaicans to make their own films about their own culture.

He also noted that Jamaica had just celebrated International Reggae Day (July 1), which demonstrates the significant impact of music from a small country on people all over the world, who he said, continue to appreciate reggae.

Dr. Chang is in charge of the Government until Prime Minister, Bruce Golding's return from the 29th regular meeting of the conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) being held from July 1 to 4, in Antigua and Barbuda.

The July 3 to 7 conference, which is being staged at the University of the West Indies (UWI) is being held in Jamaica for the first time. It attracted participants from over 60 countries to focus on revival, drumming, dancehall and reggae, to help bridge the gap between traditional scholars and the wider public.

Among those at the reception were, Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Olivia Grange; Governor-General, His Excellency, the Most Hon. Professor Sir Kenneth Hall; former Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Edward Seaga; Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Professor Barrington Chevannes; Vice Chancellor Emeritus, of the University of the West Indies, Mona campus, Professor Rex Nettleford; and Chairman of the Association of Cultural Studies, Professor Meaghan Morris.

Could there be a cure for HIV and Cancer?

ball moss_edit.jpgYardFlex came across a story published in the Observer and from the report it would seem as if Jamaica could be on the brink of something big.

According to the story Dr Henry Lowe discovered a plant (the Jamaican Ball moss) that has anti cancer properties.

The story went on to point out that Dr. Lowe who is the head of the Environmental Health Foundation claims that tests on tumours grown on rats were successful. The ball moss extract has shown to be more potent than leading anti-cancer drug Taxol, and with reduced side effects.

Another interesting discovery was made also regarding the plant that it was successful at controlling the AIDS/HIV virus.

YardFlex wishes Dr. Lowe and his team continued success in their quest to find a cure for these two disease.

Mayor Desmond McKenzie marked for death

desmond-mckenzie_hitlist.jpgDesmond McKenzie, Mayor of Kingston claims that he is 'marked for death'. According to him he discovered that his name was on a hit list. This information was revealed at the Jamaica Labour Party Area One Council meeting in Bull Bay on Sunday.

McKenzie claimed his name was among several on a list of public officials. But the Mayor is not cowering in fear as he boldly stated, "As far as I am concerned, I will never allow anybody, whether real or imaginary, to derail the work I am doing,"

"The only persons who can stop me from doing my work is the voters in the corporate area. I am not afraid," he said.

The Mayor made this disclosure as he was lamenting the murder of a public official, Jamaica Urban Transit Company Chairman, Douglas Chambers, just over a week ago.

Co Co Tea to release ‘Yes We Can’ album this summer

By: Dave Lindo

cocotea_promotional.jpgCo Co Tea will be putting out a new album titled Yes We Can, named after his latest single, a song which implores people of all nations to unite and live in peace in order to have a better world.

The album was produced by Co Co Tea aka Calvin Scott on his Roaring Lion/Dancehall Jam Jam label. According to the singer, it will have 12-15 tracks and will feature his big international hit Barrack Obama; a tribute to the American on his presidential campaign.

He has also reunited with Shabba Ranks for a song titled Time Is Real. Co Co Tea in the 1990's had 2 big collaborations with Shabba in Pirates and Who She Love. He also has collaborations with Marcia Griffiths, President Brown, Cutty Ranks and El General. He has also done a remake of Horace Andy's song, She Is My Baby.

Co Co Tea speaking to YardFlex spoke highly about the album. "It is a one in a million CD." he said with his trade mark smile. "It is a mixture of Lovers Rock and authentic reggae music. I had famous musicians working on it, like members of the Prophecy Band, Dean Frazer and his harmonizers, Kirk and Bowie, Teetamus, Lymie Murray. It has an international appeal and I am expecting it to do very well."

Speaking about the song Yes We Can, he said, "when I did the song Barrack Obamapeople tend(ed) to view it as political. But it was the changes that he was articulating that I looked at. Yes, we would like a black man in the White House, that would show that we have moved beyond the race thing.

In the song I am just encouraging the integration of the whole world, it's not skin colour, or which nation you are from. The world is heading into racial division. As artistes we have to create the initiative. We are tired of the violence. We need to do songs that bring us together, and that uplift morals. As Israel Vibration said, "We All Have To Sing the Same Song."

The Album is scheduled to be released in late July and will be distributed by Roaring Lion in the Caribbean and Amazon.com, and the Tunecore.com network internationally.

Co Co Tea will be going on a world tour to promote the album titled the Yes We Can Tour. The United States leg will be called Reggae For America World Tour. He will be making his first trip to Africa in counties like Gambia, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana and Zimbabwe.

Bolt –Asafa, who is better?

By: Dave Lindo

bolt_asafa.jpgThe big clash between world record holder, Usain Bolt and former world record holder, Asafa Powell at the recent Jamaica National Trials, not surprisingly, did not materialize. Both had played down the clash in pre-race interviews and said that they would do just enough to qualify for the Olympics team.

In the end Bolt won, looking very relaxed, even having time to glance twice at his friend Asafa, winning in a time of 9.85. While Powell just as relaxed came second in 9.97 sec.

So all focus now is on that Olympic Gold medal at the Beijing summer Olympics. Both athletes said that an Olympic Gold far outweighs having a world record as the record will easily go but the gold medal stays with you for ever.

The Bolt - Asafa debate about which of the two is 'faster' in the 100m is still circulating. I would stick my neck out in saying that presently, Bolt is in much better condition than Asafa and is capable of running faster.

However, as the outstanding track and field analyst Earl Bailey said on a Talk Show programme on RJR on Monday, June 30, 2008, "with 6 weeks to go before the Beijing Olympics anything can happen. An athlete can improve as well as drop form."

Even on the day itself, in just under 10 seconds, the 100m finals race will be completed and the winner of the Olympic Gold medal would have been decided.

Many factors will come into play in deciding who wins. Who will survive the 3 preliminary rounds using less energy. And in the finals, who executes the perfect race. The start, the 'transition stage' and the finish.

There is also the mental game; which athlete will crack under pressure, who is mentally tougher, Bolt or Asafa. Well, Asafa had shown at the last Olympics that he withered under the pressure. In the second time around though, he should be better prepared in that aspect.

Bolt, in that department loves the 'hype', loves competition and has proven to be mentally tough.

The 'Tyson Gay factor' is also a serious one to take into consideration. The Americans don't like to lose and Bolt whipping the man on his home soil, in breaking the world record, posting 9.72 at the Reebok Track Classic in New York on May 31, 2008 didn't go down well with Gay and the Americans in general.

Gay has bounced back with a wind assisted (4.1m per sec. wind) 9.68 seconds, the fastest time ever ran by a human being, which he did at the US Trials. He also ran 9.77 sec. in the semi finals of the trials.

Gay said that he and his coach, Jon Drummond, went back on the drawing board and made some improvements with his start, and his general sprinting technique.

One thing for sure, it argues well for Jamaica, in having the two fastest men in the world who are both trained by Jamaicans in Jamaica. This speaks volumes for Jamaica's track and field.

Video & Lyrics: "Take a Bow" - Rihanna

Intro
How bout a round of applause
standing ovation
ooooooooh yeah,yeah,yeah,yeah,yeah.

Verse 1

You look so dumb right now
Standing outside my house
Trying to apologize
You're so ugly when you cry
Please-(spoken)just cut it out

Chorus

Don't tell me you're sorry cuz you're not
Baby when I know you're only sorry you got caught
But you put on quite a show
You really had me going
Now it's time to go
Curtain's finally closing
That was quite a show
Very entertaining
But it's over now
Go on and take a bow

Verse 2

Grab your clothes and get gone
You better hurry up before the sprinklers come on
Talkin' about, girl, I love you, you're the one
This just looks like a re-run
Please-(spoken) what else is on

Chorus

And don't tell me you're sorry cuz you're not
Baby when I know you're only sorry you got caught
But you put on quite a show
You really had me going
Now it's time to go
Curtain's finally closing
That was quite a show
Very entertaining
But it's over now
Go on and take a bow

Bridge

And the award for the best liar goes to you
For making me believe that you could be
Faithful to me
lets here your speech now

How about a round of applause (laugh)
A standing ovation

Chorus

But you put on quite a show
You really had me going
But now it's time to go
Curtain's finally closing
That was quite a show
Very entertaining
But it's over now
Go on and take a bow

But it's over now

A Suh Mi Sey

Putting an end to crime

By: Joan Wilson

Joan_wilson.jpgI read with great shame and embarrassment the other day how they robbed the missionaries at Salvation Army. But to tell the truth I am not surprised. The only way crime is going to stop is unless the mothers and the baby mothers come together and start trying to make a difference.

These men have to rest their heads somewhere, they have to eat somewhere, they have someone in their lives that they 'check for'. But the simple truth is, women are enjoying the profits of crime and have no real need to make a difference. They are contented to spend the blood money, wash the bloody clothes, feast on the stolen goods, wear the stolen bling bling and hype up on their friends in the process. Some will even threaten you that they are going to "meck mi man buss yuh face". They take pride in being with a bad man. And at the end of the day they don't give a damn about the family that's left crying being because the bread winner was gunned down. They don't care about those who are left hungry, because the last money for food was robbed on the bus. Yet they want you to care when police gun down the culprit, then they come out and demonstrate and beg for justice.

Where is the justice when crime has so permeated the society that not even Christians now want to come and offer any assistance? We cry about how stink the situation is coming now regarding crime in our country, when we are really, seriously ready to put a stop to it, then let those women arise who are providing a safe haven for criminals.

T-Pain for Reggae Sumfest 2008

T-Pain-rap-jv05_edit.jpgAfter weeks of speculating over which international acts will be performing, for the generally vibrant Montego Bay crowd; Grammy winning Hip-Hop entertainer T-Pain has been added to the versatile lineup for Reggae Sumfest 2008. T-Pain is scheduled to co-headline the final night of the festival along with the internationally recognized reggae legend, Beres Hammond.

Tired of the generic sound of music played constantly on the radio, T-Pain was inspired to create an album that would combine the likes of both Hip-Hop and R&B; the result, the smash hit singles "I'm Sprung" and the lyrically creative track "I'm In Love with a Stripper". Released from the album "Rappa Ternt Sanga". "I'm Sprung" peaked at number eight on the Billboard Top 100 Charts, helping the newly acclaimed solo artist sell over 800,000 copies of his work. The track's remix with Vybz Kartel boosted his airplay status in Jamaica and left many youngsters wanting more. Since then, T-Pain has done everything but fallen off the music scene, appearing on a number of chart topping hits including his Grammy winning collaboration with Rapper Kanye West entitled "Good Life".

In 2007, fans would get the opportunity to hear some of T-Pain's personal work with the release of the album "Epiphany". By maintaining the same Hip-Hop inspired beats as his freshman album, T-Pain was able to win the public over once again with the club banging hits "Buy You a Drink" and "Bartender" featuring Senegalese superstar Akon. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard Charts topping Rihanna's "Good Girl Gone Bad", which was also released on the same date.

Fast forward to 2008, now a platinum selling artiste, T-Pain has hit a career high, tying with comrade Lil Wayne for being the first Hip-Hop artists to have been featured in the most songs on the Billboard Charts in a single week. So far the year has proven to belong to both T-Pain and fellow Sumfest act Lil Wayne, which may suggest why they’ve decided to collaborate on an album together. Lately, T-Pain's tunes have taken over radio stations world-wide, making it impossible to escape the hit maker. He has managed to produce more chart topping hits in a four year period than many artists have been able to in an entire lifetime. Making him without a doubt one of the most anticipated acts for Reggae Sumfest 2008.

Should Jamaica have homosexuals in the cabinet?

By: Rootzgirl

Rasta-Girl-Posters_edit.jpgThe entire world stood up and took notice when the Prime Minister of Jamaica was being interviewed in England when a very important question was asked of him if gays could be in the cabinet. The ever, cool, ever suave PM responded, "Sure they can be in the Cabinet; not mine." When the interviewer pressed home the point, maybe wanting Bruce to back down by asking "But do you want to live in a Jamaica where they can be and they should be and it would be entirely natural for them to be so?" Big up to the PM when he answered in no uncertain terms "I do not know that that is necessarily the direction in which I want my country to go."

There have been a lot of back and forth debates about equality when it comes to gays, but while I do not condone the ill-treatment and cruel acts meted out to them, in fact I totally hit out against it. At the end of the day, they are all humans too. But I draw the line at having them in the cabinet. These are people who are involved in guiding the country and having a say in the laws of the land. How can we ask them to make certain moral decisions when their lifestyle totally belies what they will be representing?

For all we know there may already be a few gays in the cabinet, and if they are, they are taking great pains to keep it totally locked up in the closet. But coming out and advocating for the rights to be recognized as a legal couple, flaunting an immoral lifestyle, influencing our children, maybe even corrupting them...that is stretching acceptance way too far.

Allowing them in the cabinet will just be the first step in making them more comfortable. Soon, you will see them on the bus holding hands and acting like regular couples, booking church halls so they can legally tie the knot.

On the other hand, gays might not be in the Cabinet, but some of the ads are advertising Jamaica as a 'gay' and 'funny' place to be, as hotels in their quest to stay on top of the market are actually encouraging them to 'cool out' and enjoy the sea and sand in Jamaica.

The love of money can indeed be the root of all evil. Just like the PM, who was willing to make a stand, which earned him the wrath of the gay rights group, hoteliers too must decide if this is the way they want to go. What if all the straight people decided to take offense and switch?

It's a non stop battle and sadly enough all we can do at the end of the day is debate this and that, but unless a body comes forward and fights as hard for straight people as much as the gay rights group is fighting, I see no hope for Jamaica, nor its dancehall acts as they are beaten down into the ground.

The latest is that a gay rights group from Canada had given Jamaica an ultimatum to 'be more gay friendly' or they would be pressuring business people to boycott us. If they are willing to go all out and do that...which group will come forward to hit back at them? Or will we eventually be seeing a mixed Cabinet of straight and gays?

International Reggae Day 2008

By: Lioness Danyell
Photography By: Milton Raynor

edit_ird_cooper.jpg

This year, the celebration of International Reggae Day, commenced back in 1994 by one-woman power house, Andrea Davis and her Jamaica Arts Holdings organisation, came to a crescendo at the Undercroft of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, with a panel discussion themed 'Reggae Music in 2008'.

edit_ird_muta.jpg

Commemorating 2008 as the 40th year of Reggae music, a major point of discussion was the landmark songs of the year 1968, which definitively propelled the shift in genre from Rock Steady to Reggae. Among these were famously Nanny Goat by Larry Marshall and Do The Reggae by Toots and the Maytals, as well as, Baby Why by the Cables, Israelites by Desmond Dekker and the Aces and Feel the Rhythm by Clancy Eccles, which was actually recorded in late 1967, but released in 1968, according to panelist Julian 'Jingles' Reynolds.

edit_ird_mikey.jpg

Other hot topics were focussed on the current state of the ownership of copyright and intellectual property rights within Reggae music and the need for the creators of the music to demand and retain possession. A discussion spearheaded by lawyer Sandra 'Sajoya' Alcott; payola, the redundancy of radio and the emergence of new technologies, primarily the internet, for music distribution, led by Dennis Howard who is currently writing his doctoral thesis on the need to recognize Reggae as a distinct and independent genre, as are Ska, Rock Steady, Dub and Dancehall. Other presenters were Michael 'Ibo' Cooper, formerly of Inner Circle and Third World, musicologist Herbie Miller and Rocky Gibbs, son of pioneering Jamaican producer, Joe Gibbs.

edit_ird_history.jpg

Notable persons in attendance at the small gathering included members of the UWI academia: Dr. Clinton Hutton, Dr. Carolyn Cooper, Cecil Gutzmore and Kamau Ron Amen, as well as Frank Gordon, Yvonne and Ishiwawa Hope, Mikey General, Mutabaruka and students from the entertainment and events management programmes at UWI and the Vocational Training and Development Institute.

edit_ird_patrons.jpg

The evening ended with a slew of short, but sweet performances from a number of upcoming artistes, as well as one from Hugh Black, who was revered in the 1980's for his major hit Friday Evening, produced by Joe Gibbs.

By: Rootzgirl

Rasta-Girl-Posters_edit.jpgWhat do you do when you want to get away from the regular mundane things of life? Say you are getting married and you are oh so tired of the 'here comes the bride' routine as you walk down the isle of the church with your husband to be waiting for you at the end? The male guests sitting comfortably in their seats all eyes fixed on you and then the same o same oh ritual of vows, songs being sung and the pronunciation of man and wife. Then you go off to do the ritual of taking photos and the guests head for the reception area where the glass knocking and the ribbing and stuff take place.

Here's an idea, you don't have to follow tradition, it's your big day and hopefully it's the one time in your life you are going to do this thing so if you want to go overboard who can blame you. Even if you want to take it way out of the norm, who cares, no one should complain! Got this idea from a friend who is actually contemplating having such a ceremony for her wedding.

Check it out, it will be an elaborate swimming pool setting, and the couple will be wearing nothing but their bathing suits! And then after reciting their vows...instead of driving off to some luscious spots decked out with flowers it will be non stop fun until they leave for the honeymoon! Yeah you guessed it, the guests will jump right into the pool after the ceremony is over. Cool don't it?

This scenario is certainly not the norm, and I had to give her high marks for coming up with this kind of concept, but will it work...that's left to be seen, but it is certainly an entertaining thought to consider when it comes to that one day in your life.

Keep the faith Anthony

edit_AnthonyCruzA_yardflex.jpgYardFlex sends condolence to singer Anthony Cruz who lost his mother, Lorna Harriot, three nights ago.

The singer told YardFlex that his mom met into an accident three years ago and since then she has been plagued with after effects from it. "She had a lot of back pain...in fact she had pain all over," Anthony Cruz said, as he tried had to maintain his composure.

He said everytime she went to the doctor she received medication, but that was about it. Three nights ago she went to bed "and she just never woke up," the singer brokenly stated. "Right now I am just trying to keep the faith and stay positive," he told YardFlex.

Anthony Cruz will be leaving the island this weekend for Delaware, where his mom lived to make funeral arrangements.

Keyshia Cole for Reggae Sumfest - Jamaica

keyshiacole_iflookscouldkill_edit.jpgIf her performance at the Miss Jamaica Beauty pageant 2008 was anything to talk about then one can imagine what will happen when Keyshia Cole hits the St. Catherine Hall stage for Reggae Sumfest's 1st International Night on July 18,2008.

This 24 year old Oakland native and multi-platinum, Grammy nominated artiste has been climbing the music industry ladder since she was 12 years old.

Her passion for motivating and inspiring young girls is revealed in her music. Her first album "The Way it is" made R&B appealing to the younger generation with singles such as, "I changed my mind", "Love", "I should have cheated" and "(I just want it) to be over".

Cole has had the distinction of working with many musical icons such as, P. Diddy to produce the hit "Last Night", Sean Paul in the remix of his single "Give it up to me", Missy Elliot and Lil Kim for "Let it go".

Her list of consistently hit songs, "Just like you", "Shoulda let you go", "I remember" and "Heaven sent" reveals a more mature side of the Princess of Hip Hop's repertoire, and is also evidence of her 'staying' power.

Reggae Sumfest's 1st International Night is one that patrons should be eagerly anticipating!

Beenie Man's tax case pushed back again!

beenieman_charts.jpgThere really seem to be no end in sight when it comes to Beenie Man's tax case. Called up yesterday, the trial was once again pushed back to July 29 in order for the crown to get more time to present witnesses.

The artiste is scheduled to return to court on July 29 when the trial is expected to resume.

Moses Davis aka Beenie Man is facing trial on allegations that he owes the government more than $40 million in outstanding taxes.

Revenue officials alleged that Beenie Man failed to pay over the taxes over a number of years.

But Beenie Man has consistently maintained that his former management company Shocking Vibes was responsible for paying his taxes.

The artiste had initially agreed to hold discussions with the tax department regarding a possible settlement, but later decided to challenge the tax assessment.

The entertainer was arrested on a warrant last October, after he failed to appear before the Tax Court to answer the charges.

YardFlex will keep you posted.

Entertainers who ventured into other business areas

goofy_bling_tanya_degree_cobra.jpg

Has Goofy aka Mr. G gone into the restaurant business? YardFlex sighted the deejay at the corner of Princeville Plaza, Kingston with his charge preparing some sumptuous looking sea foods dishes, Hellshire style, including some large Parrot fish frying up in some big frying pans.

According to one of his regular customer, they do this activity every Friday at the same location. He said that it is well supported, especially by members of the entertainment fraternity.

Other artistes in the past have branched off from the regular music business and have ventured into other fields. Bling Dawg, last year opened a barbershop in Kingston. General Degree has gone into the apparel business launching his clothing line Reh Geh.

Tanya Stephens is also set to open a restaurant in the west end of the island. 'Rude bwoy' deejay Cobra is in the race horse as well as transportation business and the list goes on. An artiste who asked to remain anonymous said, "right now artistes have to try other business ventures to turn over the money that they earn. Things get tighter now so you can't squander yu money, you have to learn about money management and good business practices. Some times the business gets slow so you have other source of income."

Robbery sends back US church group

salvation_army_logo_edit.jpgCrime continues to give the country a bad reputation. The situation worsened when a US-based church mission had to cancel plans to come to Jamaica arising out of the fact that 39 of their members were roused from their beds and robbed at gunpoint at the Salvation Army at Mannings Hill Road in St. Andrew hours before dawn on Monday.

According to reports gleaned by YardFlex the robbers were able to gain access to a secure area where the visitors were sleeping at the rear of the School for the Blind compound.

Among the stuff stolen were wallets, hand bags, digital cameras, cellulars before they made their escape at the back.
