I&I Clothing making a big statement in fashion
By: Dave Lindo
I&I Clothing Company is making a big name for itself in the apparel business ever since coming on stream in June of last year.
It has been refreshing and captivating to see the eye catching colours and excellent finishes of the I and I designs.
The brand is owned by Jason Panton ,CEO and Creative Director of the company and Financial Officer, Keisha Hall who both hold 50-50 shares of the company.
Jason grew up in Miami, Florida but also spent time in Jamaica where he attended the Edna Manley College of Visual & Performing Arts. He is a talented painter who has done graphic work with top record companies both in Jamaica and the United States. He worked at an apparel company as their Creative Director but later stepped out on his own, thus the birth of I&I Clothing Company.
The I&I brand has become very popular especially among Caribbean communities. There are stores in Miami, the United States, Bridge Town, Barbados and Jamaica at Cherries on South Ave in Kingston and at the Casa de Xaymaca at the The Norman Manley International Airport.
"We are more than music and red, green and gold," Jason explained. Caribbean Culture has made an impact worldwide as our culture is what we wear, how we speak, our perspective, attitude and our mixed origins. I&I Clothing Company embraces our musical roots in our clothing, while also recognizing that we have a wealth of icons, idioms, locations, heroes, and symbols to draw from for influence in fashion and apparel designs."
He added, "I&I seeks...to provide high quality, trend conscious clothing that is truly representative of the Caribbean and create a brand franchise that can employ Caribbean talent from abroad and in the region."
As to their designs and materials that they use, Jason said, "We are basically working with knit material in our summer collection to have a cooler feel. We have tank tops and T- shirts, we are also working on some bottoms. For the fall we will be working with some wool material."
After mounting up huge sales, Jason and his partner Keisha decided to take it to a higher level, in the form of getting endorsements of the brand by top reggae/dancehall artistes. So far they have contracted the 'Strong One' Etana, Brick and Lace and the reggae icon Junior Reid.

As to the origin of the name I&I, Jason disclosed, "It was a combination of many things. It was after leaving the small brand and being on my own, my girl friend had I&I as a part of her email address and my spirituality as a Rasta. I also wanted to have a name that is not trendy but has an everlasting name. So came the name I&I."
Jason is happy with the success of the brand, "I feel blessed, we have to be restocking our outlets every 30 days. It has really been a phenomenal!"

Dominica against Mavado's music
Mavado is again facing problems in regards to his lyrics. This time around it's from a prominent radio Disk Jockey, in Dominica, who has become a Christian. He has raised concerns as to whether Mavado should be allowed to perform at a show scheduled to be held in July.
There was an article published in Dominica addressing Mavado's lyrics and how negatively his blasphemous message has influenced the youths.
One of the writer's major concerns was why Mavado has to sing songs with lyrics suggesting he is above God. A typical example he explains is the popular church song entitled I am under the Rock. In this song he changes around the words to convey his message, the song now named "On the Rock." He explains that the song was originally written in relations to 1 Corinthians 10:4 which states that the children of Israel "Drank water from the Spiritual Rock that accompanied them, and that Rock was Christ." He has concluded that many countries refer to "crack/cocaine" as "rock" thus interpreting the song to mean "I am on crack."
In another Biblical reference the writer refers to the fourth line of the same song which goes "My name is so excellent." This he believes is blasphemous as Almighty God is the only one whose name is excellent. In Matt.12:32 the bible clearly states that "anyone who speaks blasphemously against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven."
The other Mavado song he made reference to was the popular hymn "Amazing Grace" to which he has added his own lyrics converting it to a gun tune. The chorus of his rendition states: "Amazing grace, shot fly tru face, the bwoy dem a trace, shoot up dem base, have the K's (AK47 assault rifle) dem in case, dem try fi escape, none cyaa escape, when me gun blaze." He explains that because of this and Mavado being so influential, the Minister of National Security in Dominica has been discussing implementing harsher penalties for the possession of illegal firearm and ammunition. If they are trying to do this "isn't it contradictory to bring in an artistes who sings about the same thing we are trying to put a stop to?" he asked.
Dominica isn't the only country that has taken actions against Mavado. Disk Jockeys in Trinidad and Tobago have stopped playing Mavado's lyrics on their radio stations as they blamed his lyrics for a stabbing incident that took place. Guyana and Barbados have also taken actions against him.
"This type of action does not do anything to cease Mavado's momentum and popularity, if anything, it just adds to his legend." This was a statement made Jones-Griffiths, Mavado's manager in the Jamaican Star. The writer feels that artistes are using their violent lyrics to influence youths to perform deviant behaviours and are simply using the media as a tool launch their career and make them more popular. What he can't seem to understand is how the government claims that thay want to lower the level of deviant behaviour in the country and still allow songs that glorify and encourage crime, drugs and violence to be aired daily?

Urgent help for Jamaican Hospital
Ziggy Marley has been known for his generous donations to the Bustamante Hospital for Children. His first donation was in 1991 and has continued over the years. The foundation which is called URGE (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment) has made several donations since the start of the year to the cash strapped hospital. They have donated equipment such as Laryngoscope sets, blood pressure machines, a Metro Basic crash cart and a Stand Mounted Suction Pump.
The Chain of Hope, Jamaica had appealed to URGE and they responded by paying for a pacemaker for little Shinnia Porteous who was five months at the time. She is now recovering at home.
The Victoria Jubilee Hospital's Premature Nursery also received donations from the Marley family; they donated twelve CPI Baby Cots and an Infant Radiant Warmer to the institution.
St. Ann is also receiving attention from URGE as they are the host of an annual health fair in Nine Mile. Here one can find international doctors and nurses who come to offer their time, medical supplies and services.
Big up to the Marleys!

Lil Wayne for Reggae Sumfest.
In 1997, 18 year old, New Orleans native, Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. known as Lil Wayne was the youngest member of the Cash Money Records group Hot Boys. He soon surmounted the groups expectations.
Now this Grammy nominated star will be joining other international stars, such as Keyshia Cole, for Reggae Sumfest's International Night on Friday, July 18, 2008.
The group, Hot Boys, careened to stardom with tracks such as "We on Fire" and "I Need a Hot Girl". Lil Wayne's release of his first solo album, "Tha Block is Hot" which debuted at number 3 on the Billboard charts, propelled him to stardom as a solo artiste.
The group, Hot Boys, also collaborated with The Big Tymers to produce the internationally acclaimed hit "Bling Bling".
Today Lil Wayne also known as "Lil Weezy" in one of the most respected rappers in the Hip Hop industry, with the release of his trilogy albums: "Tha Carter", "Tha Carter11" and "Tha Carter111".
Now at 25 years old with hits such as "Got Money" in collaboration with superstar T-Pain and "Millie" there is absolutely no stopping him. He was voted the "Hottest MC in the Game" as well as one of the "Men of the Year" in GQ Magazine. Blender Magazine also gave him the distinction of being the "Best Rock Star Alive".
He is a definite 'must see' at this years Reggae Sumfest festival as this one will surmount all others.

Rock Steady music being documented
By: Dave Lindo
Photography By: Milton Raynor

The Canadian and Swiss Government joined together to co- produce a film about Jamaica's Rock Steady music which is being documented by Director, Stascha Bader from Switzerland and Robert Boulos from Canada, who is the film's Line Producer.

The project which is dubbed Get Ready to Rock Steady is a tribute to the great music form. "Rock Steady was a pivotal part of Jamaica's music from the 60's where everybody was talking about love." Robert said. "Rock Steady is a forgotten era, people remember Ska and Reggae but they forget about Rock Steady."

The idea was formulated by Stascha 2 years ago where we decided to unite all the artistes and musician involved in that music form. It was the first time they were working together in over 40 years so this is a big reunion.

The only person missing was Lyn Tait who couldn't come because of health reasons, but as a guitarist he was the one who came up with the sound of Rock Steady.

Stascha was overly excited about the project, with his eyes beaming he continued, "I fell in love with Reggae like everyone else in Switzerland in the 70's and 80's. In those days all the 'big name' artistes came to Zurich, from Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Culture (and) Max Romeo. I did my PHD thesis and wrote a book on Dancehall and Reggae in 1985 called Words of Fire for the University of Zurich."

He added, "In 2006 I remembered how much I love Reggae and wondered how it all began. I came back to the roots and saw where Rock Steady was the angular point, which was clean and full of love. My dream was before they (musician / artistes) die, to get them back together and record an album and film. The original musicians and original artistes in the original studio as Tuff Gong Studio was once the Federal Studio where some of the great Rock Steady music was recorded."

Robert explained, "Jamaica do(es) not have anything documented in their archives on Rock Steady so this film and album can be used for that purpose."

Stascha and Robert have joined together some of the greatest musicians and singers that Jamaica has produced. Sly Dunbar - drums, Lloyd Parkes and Jackie Jackson – bass, Ernist Ranglin and Hux Brown - guitar, Robbie Lyn - Key board, Gladdie Anderson - Piano, Bongo Herman and Skully Simms - percussion. On the Brass section there are Glen DaCosta, David Madden, 'Deadly' Headley and Calvin Bubbles Cameron.

A live show also titled Get Ready To Rock Steady will be staged yesterday, June 25, at the National Indoor centre. The show was filmed live as part of the documentary.
Artistes participating in the project are: Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffiths, Dawn Penn, Alton Ellis, Derrick Morgan, Ken Boothe, Leroy Sibbles, Hopeton Lewis, the Tamlins, Stranger Cole and Uroy.

The musicians and artistes were just as excited to be a part of the project. YardFlex sat through the rehearsal for the show and the vibes was just awesome. It was like we were in 'musical heaven' watching the artistes and musician working together, reliving the good old days. It was evident that they haven;t skipped a beat after 40 years and was into their work like it was just yesterday. A high point was seeing one of Jamaica's great 'song bird' Judy Mowatt rehearsing the song Silent River and Dawn Penn doing No No No backed by those great musicians.

One of the pioneers of local music, Leroy Sibbles, as bouncy as ever spoke highly about the project. "I am excited to be a part of it, it brings back memories, it is good to be reunited if only for this project," he said.

Leroy Sibbles who is an icon in the business worked as a bass player, musical arranger and back up singer with the group Heptones on many hit songs in the early day. He worked on Dennis Browns first album, No Man Is An Island, John Holt's album, Love I Can Feel, to name a few.

Carlton Smith of the Tamlins shared feelings similar to Sibbles, "It's a good experience. There are foundation musician like Ernie Ranglin, Hux Brown, who played on several of our (Tamlins) early hit songs. We used to play for Sly and Robbie as most of our songs were produced by them on their Taxi Label. And we used to be Peter Tosh's back up singers. Sly and Robbie used to be in his band so it is like a real reunion."

The great man himself, Ernie Ranglin in his humble way said, "It is nice. I haven't seen them for over 30 years. Not seeing them for a long time, just nice, same spirit, fine musicians, we had great times in those day and it is good to relive those days."

Dawn Penn said "It is invigorating, very gratifying for what we do, thanks (to) the people who had this vision to bring it back to what it used to be. Hats off to Rita Marley and Tuff Gong also, they have been doing a great job and carrying on the work."

Engineer Errol Brown who had worked on several Rock Steady songs said he had a bitter sweet experience on the project, as he explained. "It was good seeing all these great musician but it was very sad to see them, shaky and poor. They have put in the work and paved the way for Jamaica's music and haven't been rewarded for their work. People like Coxsone Dodd and my Uncle Duke Reid gave them little or nothing. They got up to 15 pounds – 30 pounds for their work when they (Coxsone and Reid) made up to 30, 000 pounds. They should have gotten their fair reward."

Girlie charged for molesting a boy
Girlie, Girlie, Girlie, what's wrong with you? Everybody wants to know. Everyone remembers Lascell "Girlie" Parnell for his role in many Jamaican plays, where he always plays the roles of females. Well it seems this has affected him psychologically as he was charged and arrested for sexually molesting a teenage boy in Brooklyn. It's like he has forgotten that this is real life not a play and he is a man not a woman.
It was reported by the police that on May 28, 2008 the teenage boy's mother reported that "Girlie" allegedly molested her son. The police carried out their investigation and he was arrested. On May 29, 2008 he was charged and arrested for the allegations. He was later released on a US$7500 bail with surety.
This was not all, it only gets worse. Later "Girlie" was arrested again for child pornography. Has this man (male or female) lost his mind? There is no evidence of "Girlie" being formally charged with these additional offences. If he is, he will be deported back to Jamaica. This is not good. He better not be involved and stays where he is. He will need another lawyer as well, because it is rumoured that his original lawyer "bailed on him".

Shaq Loses Deputy Status
Shaquille O'Neal will lose his special deputy's badge in Maricopa County because of language he used in a rap video that mocks former teammate Kobe Bryant.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said the Phoenix Suns center's use of a racially derogatory word and other foul language left him no choice. Arpaio made Shaq a special deputy in 2006 and promoted him to colonel of his largely ceremonial posse later that year.
"I want his two badges back," Arpaio told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "Because if any one of my deputies did something like this, they're fired. I don't condone this type of racial conduct."
Shaq was seen in a video posted on the celebrity news and gossip Web site TMZ.com rapping that "Kobe couldn't do without me." O'Neal skewers the Lakers' star, with whom he won three straight NBA titles from 2000-2002 while with Los Angeles, for not being able to win a championship without him.
"I was freestyling. That's all. It was all done in fun. Nothing serious whatsoever," O'Neal told ESPN.com Monday. A call to the Suns on Tuesday seeking comment from O'Neal was referred to his public relations firm, which didn't immediately respond.

Busy's lyrics sending wrong signals
Another artiste is now receiving a hard time because of his violent lyrics. Promoters of the 12th Annual St. Kitts Music Festival have been expressing concern since the line up of artistes for the show has been released. They fear that the use of profanity, lyrics promoting violence and sexual acts will be on display.
The main artiste for this event is Busy Signal. The promoters are however worried as they feel his lyrics are violence based.
They have argued that everyone knows Busy Signal for his "gangsta" lyrics which have been perceived to persuade people to use violence to resolve issues. This is depicted in his breakout hit single "Step Out", a line from which goes: "Afta mi step out, inna mi black, have glock, unda mi throwback. Shot holla pon spot, Badman nuh tek back chat..." and "Bwoy disrespect, Mi get mi guns fi do a fine job". The promoters fear that Busy's lyrics will not be appropriate and are too violent for him to be on the show.
Violence in the Caribbean, especially Jamaica, has been on the rise, so people are questioning whether the Music Festival Committee's choice to allow Busy to be a part of the show will just add fuel to fire. They are taking into consideration that Busy's fan base consists of teenagers, mostly males, and his lyrics are not portraying a positive message. Although Busy Signal was selected on the basis of his popularity, concerned individuals are still questioning this move.
The CEO for the St. Kitts Music Festival, Alistair Williams, has advised the public that this event is known to offer a broad blend of musical expressions and therefore whoever is slated to perform will be advised that their lyrics have to be appropriate in terms of the contract that will be established. This he explains is a surety as it is a part of the Festival's artiste contract that explicit language will not be allowed.

Look for better alternatives
Honestly what is the world coming to when we in Jamaica are gonna contemplate legalizing the oldest profession in the world. Sex workers Association? Articles have even gone on to refer to it as an industry? What is so Industrious about that?
I am no prude but come on man shouldn't there be a better programme aimed at helping these men and women to have some respect for themselves, helping them to look at a better alternative than abusing their bodies night after night? Can you imagine how shocked I was when I heard the PRO for the association coming on national television and saying they are willing to pay their taxes and stuff like that.
Before you had prostitutes, but they were never willing to come up front and admit that they are involved in it, now everywhere you turn it is staring you in the face. If this trend is to be continued, then very soon Jamaica will have their own 'red light district. Instead of suggesting such a thing about legalizing something that's morally wrong, not to mention unsafe for these men and women, come up with some better programmes that can set them on the path to independence and one which will see them not using their bodies as a means of support.
It saddens me that women have allowed themselves to be nothing but a few minutes of pleasure for some man, just so that they can put food on the table for their children. But on the flip side, how do you look at your kids and tell them, this is what mommy has to do to support you and then turn around and tell you daughter, that she shouldn't?
I am not judgmental, but I think prostitution is the easy way out for women who are just too lazy to seek better alternatives or they just want the easy way out for a fast buck.
I admire those women on the streets who sell donuts, bag juice, whatever it takes to make two ends meet without compromising. Without a doubt, life is hard and it shows no signs no getting any easier...but taking to the streets and trading sex for money is not an option...a suh mi sey

News Brief
Florida HIV/AIDS Advocacy Groups, Health Departments To Increase HIV Awareness Among Minorities Ahead of National HIV Testing Day.
HIV/AIDS advocacy groups and health departments in Florida are planning several events aimed at increasing awareness about HIV among minorities ahead of National HIV Testing Day, which is scheduled for Friday, the Naples Daily News reports.
According to the Daily News, Florida in 2006 reported the third-highest AIDS rate for blacks and fourth-highest rate for Hispanics nationwide, as well as the highest rate for whites. Amalia Zamot, regional minority HIV/AIDS coordinator for the Florida Department of Health, said that there is a "general disproportion" in HIV/AIDS rates among white and minority communities in the area. She added that the disparity is especially true for the area's black community, in which one in every 72 people is living with HIV/AIDS.
Advocacy groups and county health departments are implementing several
programs in an effort to increase awareness and improve testing rates
among minorities. The Collier County Health Department is offering on-site testing, treatment, education and support programs, according to Scott Tims, the department's HIV/AIDS program manager. Tims added that department staff also are increasing outreach efforts and are working with local churches and not-for-profit groups to increase testing and establish outreach programs. In addition, the Lee County Health Department has set up several HIV testing centers throughout the region.
Although advocates and health workers are working to improve testing among minorities, Zamot said efforts also need to be made to reduce stigma associated with the virus. "We have to be culturally sensitive and culturally proficient," Zamot said (Batista, Naples Daily News, 6/21).

Jamaica - More murders than square mile!
Instead of the level of crime in Jamaica being reduced it seems to be aggressively increasing. According to The Gleaner, the Global Ratings Agency has ranked Kingston as the 31st most dangerous city in the world to live in. This report was issued earlier this month. Jamaica is a small island yet the level of crime committed in our island reflects that of a larger country.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields has, however, come forth to say that this report is unfair as most of the crimes in Jamaica are gang related. He explains that although Kingston is ranked as unsafe, in comparison to London and other developed countries, it is one of the safest.
This may be true but it does not excuse the fact that at least 800 persons have been killed in Jamaica in 2008 with nearly fifty percent of these murders taking place in Kingston and St. Andrew alone.
Many persons have asked, what can be done to solve this problem? Many have argued that without sufficient jobs the crime level will not decrease. This is true because when you think about it people are just looking for a way to survive and provide for their families. Some are just plain frustrated, as nothing that they do seems to make a difference to their standard of living, so they lash out at society and unfortunately me and you. If these men and women had better opportunities and constructive things to do then some of them would not have the time to get mixed up in criminal activities.
I know we all just wish that everyone would stop the killing and fighting and live as one.

Ninja Man in Canada after 21 years
Dressed in all white, Ninja Man took his seat at the front of the conference centre, appearing relaxed, and focused on discussing the One Umbrella Movement and its' organization, which promotes non-violence, especially amongst the youth.
"There is no one better than me to head this movement. Bounty can't do it; Beenie Man can't do it. Only a man like me who has lived the life I've lived can be a role model to these youths, and telling them that if they go the path of drugs, they will end up like this, or if they take up a gun, they will end up like that. I've been down that road, which everyone knows, and it's time for me to take up this cause to save the youths from a life that's not good. I know; I've been there as everybody knows. The only two other man who could do this is Josie Whales, or Super Cat. We know that violence will never be eliminated, but we can at least bring violence down, and I am going to do it"! So said Ninja Man when asked how his life's experience has prepared him for this role
It's been 21 years since Ninja Man has touched Canadian soil, but this past weekend put that two decade absence to an end as Ninja Man, escorted by his wife, held a press conference at York University promoting the One Umbrella Movement founded by the Don Gargon himself.
"The press conference is being held to let the people know that after 21 years, Ninja Man is able to travel to Canada and also to spread awareness for the One Umbrella Movement" said Fabian 'Fabo' Hanson of Vibes Entertainment, who is responsible for obtaining Ninja Man's travel documents to Canada, as well as the United States. Fabo, long time business man, promoter and immigration consultant, has been chosen by Ninja to head the Canadian chapter of the One Umbrella Movement. The One Umbrella Movement was officially launched in Jamaica December, of 2007.
Ninja Man extended the invitation to community leaders and non-leaders urging everyone to play an important role. "A leader may be in a position to donate things we need, which is good. A non leader might only be able to negotiate peace between two youths warring; we still need him too". Ninja made it clear that he is the overall head of the organization, including chapters in other countries as he seriously joked with conference attendees when saying "Ah me run di program no matta which part ah di world me ah deal wid. Dem haffi do weh me tell dem fi do"!
Ninja Man, in association with Vibes Entertainment, will hold a concert on August 15th, 2008 in Toronto at The Kool Haus 132 Queen Quay East.

In recognition of International Reggae Day, the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO) in association with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Jamaica Trade and Invest (JTI), present the IRD Copyright Forum at the Terra Nova Hotel on July 1st. JIPO's ongoing work to heighten public awareness on the importance and economic value of Intellectual Property Rights and the need for the protection of these rights, will gain momentum and additional support with the July 1st forum which is open to the public. Produced annually as a virtual media reggae festival hosted by Jamaica, IRD seeks to combine the power of music, media and technology to celebrate and highlight the power and impact of Jamaican culture around the world.
IRD 2008 joins with the Toots Foundation in a one-year campaign to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Reggae as defined by the 1968 recording of Do the Reggae by Toots and the Maytals, which is credited with giving the genre its name.
According to JIPO's Executive Director, Ms. Carol Simpson, "JIPO is the Government agency responsible for managing the intellectual property system in Jamaica and one of our objectives for the forum is update the business, financial and creative communities on the developments in the copyright sector, nationally and internationally."
Participants at the forum will have an opportunity to hear the important findings of the recently released WIPO Report on the contribution of the Jamaican Copyright to the national economy from its author, UWI Lecturer and Economist Dr. Vanus James.
Speaking to the growing practice of using Intellectual Property as an asset for accessing loans and venture capital will be WIPO guest speaker, Laurent Manderieux, Professor of Intellectual Property Law at L. Bocconi University of Milan, Italy, Associate Professor of Copyright Law at the University of Francophone States, and Visiting Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the University of Trento, Italy.
No stranger to Jamaica, Professor Manderieux developed the 'WIPO Outreach Plan For Strengthening Public Awareness Of Intellectual Property Rights At A National Level in Jamaica', as well as the Outreach Plan For Strengthening Public Awareness Of Intellectual Property Rights in the Caribbean.
In confirming WIPO's decision to co-sponsor the IRD Copyright Forum, Ms. Francesca Toso, Senior Counsellor in the Latin America and Caribbean Bureau at WIPO stated that "It is a part of WIPO's mandate to assist all nations, particularly developing and least developed countries, in using the intellectual property (IP) system to promote their economic, social and cultural development. In this respect, WIPO is pleased to support JIPO and by extension, the Jamaican creative and business communities, in facilitating the discussions taking place on International Reggae Day. It is hoped that the forum will promote a greater understanding of the value of Intellectual Property as assets and how they may be better exploited to achieve individual and national economic benefits."

Hello world here comes Natalie Storm
Born Natalie Cole in rural Jamaica, she moved to Kingston as a child. Natalie grew up listening to, and being influenced by the sounds of Motown, Madonna, and dancehall female artistes like Mumma Nancy, Lady Patra and Lady Saw. It was while a student at the Holy Childhood High School that she decided to make a career of music. After joining the Holy Childhood choir she successfully auditioned for the Cathy Levy Players.
While still in school, Natalie was approached by a producer seeking female singers for an all girl reggae group. The group was Make Boyz Cry(M.B.C). After a few years as group leader and an album released by the Toshiba-Emi label in Japan, Natalie decided in late 2006 to pursue an alternative course. She left the group and began to record material with some of the top producers in Jamaica and across the globe. These include, Swatch International, Flabba (MO’ Music), Ward 21, Jam 2, Seanizzle, Wildlife (Switzerland), Phlatline (Germany) and New York based Stretch Armstrong (who has produced for Nelly Feurtado, Lil' Kim, Wu Tang Clan).

What's poppin'
No Finish Line
Isn't it sad when artistes and their fans are mashing up the business. Can you imagine Finish Line the Summer edition which was supposed to be held on Saturday featuring Kartel and Mavado did not get a permit from the police to be held in the division...cause they feared the two camps would go at it.
Remember that big press conference at Pegasus Hotel where the two cried peace, wonder if they didn't remember to pass it on to their supporters. Save the music, before nutten nuh lef!

Summerfield and Sinclairs Car Park in Christiana were the stops for the Festival crew.
The action is definitely heating up and come July the biggie will be held at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre were the winner will be announced.

Actor Shauna Chin arriving as a guest to Haile Selassie's Palace on May 30,2008 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She was one of the guests to arrive as personal invitation to dine with the current President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, H.E. Ato Girma W. Giorgis for her work as a Humanitarian.
She was very ladylike, but you could tell she was struck by Selassie's throne. They had his original throne exactly like how he left it and she kept touching it. That's that carved thing that she is standing by. The last picture is part of the throne by itself.

The Levy's gospel heritage continues
By: Joan Wilson
Lubert Levy took the top prize in the JCDC's gospel competition in 2004. Four years later his son Ovando is a finalist. It is left to be seen whether he will repeat his dad's achievement.
From as far back as he can remember Ovando has always enjoyed a fascination for singing, he has been doing it since the age of three. In fact he has entered the Tastee Talent Contest on more than one occasion with his siblings under the banner Levy's Heritage.
Ovando said that in 2005 his dad got a revelation from the Holy Spirit that Levy's Heritage would be a group to be reckoned with and since then, he along with his brother Oneil and sister Oshin took Levy's Heritage on the road, performing at churches, concerts and just ministering the word in songs. The group eventually won the Canadian MAJA Award in 2006.
Although Ovando is representing the Levy's Heritage as a sole performer they are still a group. His siblings were left out because of a clause in the contract for the competition. JCDC already had their back up vocals for all performers. But with with support in the wings and driven by his father's support, Ovando will be going all out in the competition to show Jamaica what he can do. He says it's all about ministry and he relish the chance of sharing with many on the road shows.
Hailing from the community of Windsor Heights in St Catherine, Ovando attended St Catherine High School. The JCDC gospel finalist is now a student at the Edna Manley College School of Music where he is pursuing popular music study along with music education.

Busy Signal and Dugsy Ranks created a storm in Turks and Caicos
Story & Photos By: Dave Lindo

Busy Signal and Dugsy Ranks created a storm in the Turks and Caicos Island when performing at Techno Sound's 10th Anniversary celebration titled 'Sound The Big Thing' on Sunday, June 15, 2008 at the Williams Auditorium in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos.
Busy Signal could do nothing wrong for his audience. He had them in a frenzy as he kicked off his performance with the song 'Rising To The Top'. Busy... then dropped the 'bomb' when he sang 'Bad Man Place' which resulted in the lighters and 'gun fingers' coming out in a flourish.

He then paid tribute to the alliance camp as he did his combination with Mavado, the song 'Full Clip'. Busy stepped it up another notch as he told the large crowd on hand that 'We Not Going Down'.
Busy got even busier on stage and represented for all the Jamaicans in the audience with 'Jamaica Wi Born and Grow'.
The deejay went into his catalogue of hits with one of his 'break out' songs 'Step Out' which had the crowd making their own steps on the dance floor.

Busy Signal got into a more pensive mood as he performed the soul stirring song, 'These Are The Days' which the crowd sang along with.
With the girls at the front clambering to touch him, and all the phones waving in the air, Busy...did 'Unknown Number'.
Evidently having fun on stage while sharing good vibes with his audience, the deejay shook the place as he went into 'Nah Guh A Jail Again'. It was share pandemonium as Busy... sounded another big thing with 'Wine Pon De Edge' which had the girls in a frenzy wining uncontrollably. Busy also got in the act when he invited a girl on stage to 'Wine Pon De Edge'.
Dugsy Ranks seemingly a favourite after making this, his third appearance on the Island didn't disappoint his fans.
Dugsy... set the place on fire as he deejayed a song about Gangstas. The deejay then went into high gear and had the girls screaming as he did his big hit song 'Wife' on the red hot pepper seed rhythm.

Dugsy...ended his performance on a high with some more songs for the girls which had the ladies going wild.
Jamaican singer August performing in the island for the first time represented well.
August had the ladies weak as he sang 'Too Late', a One Republic original. He then brought the house down when he serenaded a beautiful Haitian girl on stage.

Techno promoter of the event was very pleased with how the event turned out. "It was a good vibes man. The people love Busy... down hear and he delivered well so too my good friend Dugsy Ranks. It was the first time any event was being held here on a Sunday so this is an historic event."
Techno has kept some of the most successful events in Turks and Caicos, the biggest being a BMobile show featuring Beres Hammond, Bounty Killer, and Wayne Marshall.

The dangers of peer pressure
Peer pressure can be a dangerous thing and this was made very clear the other day when five teenagers from a Massachusetts high school gave in to that kind of pressure by intentionally getting pregnant. One even went as far as sleeping with a homeless man to accomplish the agenda.
Time magazine quoted the principal of Gloucester High as saying the girls decided to get pregnant and raise their babies together.
The number of pregnancies at the school jumped from the usual four per year to 17. Gloucester High School has a total of 1,200 students, reported Boston TV station WCVB.
Principal Joseph Sullivan told Time magazine that the girls were making frequent stops at the school clinic for pregnancy tests and "seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were." He said when some of the girls found out they were pregnant, they traded high fives and talked about baby showers.

Sex workers want to pay tax
The Sex Workers Association of Jamaica has spoken out in support of recommendations for de-criminalization and levying taxes on Jamaica's sex industry, this ccording to a report on radiojamaica.com.
In a front page story in one of the dailies, Dr. Kevin Harvey, Senior Medical Officer in charge of the Health Ministry's National HIV/STI Programme is quoted as saying the government could earn some $3 billion in revenue if they de-criminalized, regularized and taxed this sector.
The Association Spokesperson Marsha Grant said its members are ready for this move and are more than happy to support the call.
Ms Grant argued that despite the fact that prostitution and other segments of the sector are covertly supported by many Jamaicans, it remains a largely underground enterprise, fraught with danger.
She said de-criminalization would give workers greater protection.
"They are the victims of physical, emotional and psychological abuse both from clients and from other persons who operate in the industry. This would open-up an avenue for them to access support from the security forces," she said.
Accessing better health care
Ms Grant added that members of the Sex Workers Association are eager to gain access to other benefits taken for granted by Jamaican workers.
"Currently, they are not accessing health services as much as we would like them to and this is contributing to their demise. Operating underground as it were, they have little recourse for fair treatment and for making investments that can better their and their children's lives," said Ms Grant.
The Spokesperson warned, however, that in spite of the Association's eagerness to see change, the members will only pay taxes if their contribution to the national coffers ensures an improvement in both the HIV/STD outreach programmes and the treatment they receive when seeking assistance from the Police and other Government services.
Ms Grant said the Sex Workers Association of Jamaica is willing to sit with officials from the Ministries of Health, Justice, Finance and Planning to iron out a plan of action that will benefit all concerned.
She said her organization has already started working with Jamaica AIDS Support and the Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition.

It's An Amazing Grace for Christopher 'Johnny' Daley
Photography By: Dreamy Riley

Christopher 'Johnny' Daley was in Miami for Amazing Grace, a play which many are touting as one of the better ones to come across the Miami shores. The play which premiered on Father's Day June 15 had the Miami massive laughing away at the hilarious scenes.

Amazing Grace is a collaborative effort between Jamaica Awareness and Riddims Marketing at producing and presenting a play in South Florida. The play is Martin's first effort at playwriting and features several Florida-based actors. Johnny Daley serves in the dual role as director and one of the lead characters.

An Amazing Grace is the volatile story of Johnny, played by Chris Daley, an aspiring young reggae singer with dreams of "hitting" big time. Johnny's dreams always seem to elude him as he struggles to let go of his past criminal lifestyle with bad man "Dredie", played by Andrew Clarke and "Puddy", played by Sammy Question, who thinks Johnny would serve them better if he sticks with their robbery schemes. Puddy is convinced that Johnny has a 'nose' for sniffing out drugs or money. Queenie, played by Ann "Charm" McKenzie, Johnny's old or current girlfriend, depending on who you ask, hates the fact that he still hangs out with this motley crew. They act as a distraction to Johnny's dancehall dreams and her own wishes of accompanying him on stage as Dancehall Queen and his first lady off stage.

Queenie's fantasies seem threatened when Johnny's eyes catches the smile of church sister Grace, played by Chanise Brady, who thinks his talent needs to be used as an instrument of the Lord. Sister Grace, a young choir leader for the dramatic and flamboyant Pastor Brown, played by Gary "Sweetness" Clarke - the head of the local Church of God Prophecy - sees Johnny as the perfect addition to the church choir. Johnny is warming up to the idea of changing his lifestyle but is pressured as Puddy & Dredie demands that he goes through with a planned heist - a take of all takes - that will have them set for life. Queenie has no plans for any of the above and sets her own trap.

God's plan, the devil's diversion and Queenie's dreams unfold in this dramatic and exciting play filled with humor and social commentary. Cameo audio appearances are made by colorful South Florida party promoter "Screechie Bop" and radio personality Winston Barnes.

As good as Johnny may be in the play thought, we couldn’t help but wonder how many women were looking at him and wondering how healthy he looked in the video! We wonder though can anyone ever look at this comedian and get the same spin on his jokes?

Children need parents not pimps
By: Jodi-Kaye Watson
Are our parents losing the love for their children? How can you as a parent see your child needing your help and yet neglect them? Children need constant love and emotional support from parents. If they are not receiving this support, they will seek it elsewhere, and get mixed up with the wrong company, then you call them worthless!
Another thing that puzzles me is that parents find it necessary to call their children insulting names such as, "jancrow, dutty gal, idiot and dunce", just to name a few. Let me ask you all this, when children hear their parents referring to them by these abusive names won't they think that's what they really are? If everyday you call your child 'dunce' won't the child actually feel that he/she is indeed a 'dunce'? So don't get mad when his/her grades reflects this mentality. If you see that your child is regressing academically or hanging out with the wrong group of friends, remember it is your fault!
Parents need to talk to their children. Be their children's guide, confidant and friend. Parents need to be supportive of their children, encourage their ambitions (even when they don't agree). I know children don't always make the wisest decisions but it is their future, their life and as much as we want to live it for them we can't. If your child decides that he wants to be a police who are you to tell him he should be a doctor or that she should be a lawyer. It's understandable that you are just trying to ensure that they have a bright future but it all boils down to what they want to do.
There is also the issue of parents who think they know who their children should marry or date. We all know that teenagers sometimes don't always choose the best boy or girl to go out with or date. Now if the parents feel the need to intervene they should do so with care without embarrassing the child, as this is a very sensitive situation which could easily go wrong for all parties involved. On the other hand there are some parents, most often mothers, who force their children, especially daughters, into relationships for financial gain. Isn't the exchange of sex for money prostitution? Parents need to stop prostituting their daughters. This is a totally despicable act! Be a parent not a pimp!
Parents just love, respect, support and make sure you are always there for your children.

Prodigal Son and wife Split
This is one marriage YardFlex never had on the books to be on the rocks. But according to a report published in the Star the Christian couple have now decided to call it quits.
No details was given on why the union was broken but the gospel artiste was reported as saying to the evening tabloid, "If I share a relationship with someone, I believe that is private. There's no way I will speak about the person. I don't wish to do that, but I am separated."
Prodigal's wife told the Star that she has started filing for divorce.

Eek A Mouse removed from Carifest C.A.R.E.S. Lineup
As a result of some disparaging remarks made by Jamaican artist, Eek A Mouse at the Carifest C.A.R.E.S. press conference on June 4th, organizers have pulled him from the event lineup. The organizers for Carifest C.A.R.E.S. made this decision based on Eek A Mouse's inability to realize the seriousness of the issue the festival is trying to raise awareness for as well as his refusal to apologize.
Carifest C.A.R.E.S. has teamed up this year with Keep A Child Alive, an organization dedicated to help fight the AIDS epidemic in Africa which crosses all racial barriers. The organizers feel that Eek A Mouse's racial outburst towards the other artists on the panel who have all come together from a wide array of racial and cultural backgrounds to help the cause was unacceptable. In a rebuttal to Eek A Mouse's comments, Matisyahu and Midnite simply came together in an impromptu duet that illustrated the point the best way possible: music can make a difference no matter where you come from. As the late brother Bob Marley would say: "one good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain".
Carifest C.A.R.E.S. will take place Sunday, July 6th at the USTA National Tennis Center: Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows Park, Queens, NY. This year's festival, as in the past, promises a momentous event, which as always, includes a stellar line-up of performances. Sets by legendary Grammy award winner Lee "Scratch" Perry, who has been an innovator and at the forefront of the reggae music scene for 50 years; Matisyahu, who brings his uncanny, electrifying fusion of orthodox Judaism and classic reggae, and the most recent addition to the line-up: Slightly Stoopid who describe their music as "A fusion of acoustic rock and blues with reggae, hip hop, and punk." In addition is: cutting edge St. Croix roots reggae band, Midnite; Brooklyn bred and Jamaican raised Kayla Bliss; the up and coming conscious reggae crooner Uriel Hamilton; Afro-fusion reggae fronted by a soaring, soulful voice in Meta and the Cornerstones; Antigua & Barbuda's Causion who has been dubbed a 'musical archer' due to his straightforward and provocative lyrics; a young American hailing from Arkansas with his voice rooted deep in Jamaica, Joseph Israel; and Groundation who bring to the table, a unique infusion of reggae, jazz and dub.

Boyz makes explosive start
By: Devon Anderson and Dwight Fraser
Photography By: Milton Raynor

Jamaica's Reggae Boyz made an explosive start to their 2010 South Africa World Cup Finals campaign when they comprehensively beat an inferior Bahamas outfit 7-0 at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica on Sunday.
Playing before an almost capacity crowd the Boyz made a giant step towards advancing to the semi-final stage of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying series.
Captain Ricardo Gardner started the on-slaught when he scored in the 17th minute. This was followed by goals from Demar Phillips, Marlon King, Andy Williams, Omar Daley and a double strike from Luton Shelton.

Technical Director Rene Simoes credited the team for the pace at which they played following an embarrassing 2-1 loss to Grenada in a friendly last week, but pointed out that there was still room for improvement.
Meanwhile Jamaica's captain Ricardo Gardner who plied his skills with English Premier League Club, Bolton Wanderers, noted that the team realized the need to make amends after their defeat from Grenada and lauded the efforts of his team-mates after a thumping victory to kick start their 2010 World Cup campaign.
The Reggae Boyz will now turn their attention to the Parish of Trelawny where they will play the return leg qualifying game on Wednesday against the same opponent Bahamas at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium starting at 4:00pm.

Eek-a-mouse went on a dissing path
When asked at last week's Carifest C.A.R.E.S. (Compassionate Artists Recognizing Entertainment Solutions) press conference what Carifest meant to him, Eek-A-Mouse replied. "It doesn't mean (expletive) to me." He then changed the subject entirely and went off on a tirade, dissing all the white people who control reggae, like Ace Of Base, Matisyahu, (whose name he repeatedly mispronounced and called Matissaweh), Sean Paul and Shaggy; bitterly blaming them for his inability to get signed by a major label. He even included the late, great, reggae founder Bob Marley in his racist rant, citing that he had a white father.
Don't take our word for it...check out the video for yourselves

The Marley Resort and Spa joins the newest line of exclusive Boutique Resorts
By: Vanessa

The Marley Resort and Spa, West Bay Street ,came alive this past labour day weekend with the sounds of Pliers one half of, arguably Jamaica's most successful duo, Chackademus and Pliers. The resort which is presently closed to the public, is getting geared up for its grand opening, slated for Sunday 16th, June 2008.
Rita Marley, the proprietor, who staged this free concert, was on hand to celebrate with the employees. "It was wonderful. Big up Nassau I love it!" she said as she was seen dancing along with staff members of the resort.
On quizzing Pliers about the resort, he was quite happy to recommend it to everyone. "I love the setting – it is very beautiful. The rooms are very nice. I did not expect anything less. I know Mrs. Marley very well, she is a quality lady with lots of style and she meditates before she does anything. Meditation is quite important."

On looking back at his most successful career, Pliers shrugged his shoulders and smiled as he reminisced about the unusual amount of success that he was grateful to have enjoyed so far. It appeared difficult for him to begin as the road has been a long one, with numerous hit singles and records to his credit.
"We were the second most successful group (Chackademus and I), that Chris Blackwell signed after Bob Marley. "Murder She Wrote" sold over seven million copies. We are also the first Jamaican act to have three consecutive top five hits on the U.K Singles Chart."
The road has been long for the dynamic duo who brought to the world, "Tease Me", "She Don't Let Nobody", a cover for a Curtis Mayfield tune. 'Twist and Shout', a remake of the Isley Brothers and Beatles hit and the recently released "Need Your Loving".
For those who missed out on a great weekend Pliers promises to come back and bring his two talented brothers Spanner Banner and Richie Spice for the official opening of the exclusive Marley Resort and Spa.
Patrons are encouraged to seek information on an exclusive membership package which can be obtained by visiting The Marley Boutique which sits in front of the resort.

Macka Diamond gives undisclosed sum to five rural High Schools

The good book reads, "To whom much is given, much is required", and for Charmaine Munroe, better known to the world as Macka Diamond, it is quite clear that she not only knows this principle, but lives by it.
Just recently she again showed her kinder, gentler and more compassionate side by hosting an All School Beach Party at Ocho Rios' Margaritaville, with proceeds from the event going towards the enhancement of the music departments of schools in and around the area.
The all day, incident free, Beach Party, which was held on the 24th of May, was the first of its kind at the venue, usually reserved for visitors to the island, but with its success and benefit to the community, Macka Diamond and her company, Diamond District Ja. along with Margaritaville, Ocho Rios, have agreed to again partner on yet another beach party, The Remix- Summer Edition, scheduled to be held on July 12th, at Margaritaville Ocho Rios, with proceeds again going towards the enhancement of the music department in schools.
The presentation of funds to the schools was done on June 12th 2008, at Margaritaville, Ocho Rios, and was attended by both students and teachers from Iona, Oracabessa, York Castle, Ocho Rios and Marcus Garvey High Schools, who weren't only grateful for the undisclosed financial gesture, but also enjoyed being up-close and personal with the 'Money Goddess' herself.
Mr. Levermore, head of the music department at York Castle High School expressed heartfelt thanks to Macka Diamond and her Company on behalf of all the schools. He mentioned that York Castle will use the donation to purchase a much needed amplifier for the music department.

Barbie Hospitalized following accident
Barbee was hospitalized Saturday night following an accident in New York on her way to Jamrock Reggae Fest that was held at the Hammerstein Ballroom.
According to reports Barbee took off her seat belt to apply makeup as she was running late for the show. Her friend, who was driving a Mercedes Benz lost control of the vehicle due to the reportedly slippery conditions of the road, resulting in the Benz hitting a SUV. Barbee hit her head against the windshield, breaking it and in the process knocking herself unconscious.
She awoke some two hours later in the hospital. The upcoming singer is now recuperating and is expected to be released soon from hospital.

Ever Wondered Why Fathers' Day Does Not Get The Same Attention As Mothers' Day?
By: Jodi-Kaye Watson
Fathers Day is a day for children to show their love and appreciation to their fathers. However it often seems that individuals pay more attention to Mothers' Day than Fathers' Day. We all know mothers are important and children share a special bond with their mothers but aren't fathers important too?
When it's close to Mothers' Day the pharmacies, stores and vendors on the streets have dozens of baskets for sale. Now, I am sure this Fathers' Day weekend some persons won't even remember about Fathers' Day on Sunday, June 15. The pharmacies, stores and street sides are not flooded with baskets and gifts. Why is this so? Even Valentines' Day gets more recognition than Fathers' Day.
I know people will argue about dead-beat fathers who are not living up to their responsibilities, but all fathers are not the same. There are some fathers who take very good care of their children. When the mothers are not around they have to assume that responsibility as well.
We at YardFlex would just like to wish all the reliable fathers who know they play a proactive role in their children's life a Happy Fathers' Day! We hope this day will be a memorable one for all you fathers and we hope that you continue to support and care for your children. As for you dead-beats, you all need to start living up to your responsibilities.
Happy Fathers Day!

Buju and Junior...time to bury the hatchet
The Buju Banton and Junior Reid drama seem to have no end. Junior Reid was quoted publicly as saying that he has forgiven Buju for the disrespect he showed him at the Best of the Best show in Miami. Reid was annoyed and upset because he claimed that Buju referred to him as 'Junior Greed' in front of his daughter Destiny who wanted to meet Buju whom she really admired. That was the real reason Junior got all upset and called Banton a fish.
A lot of people feel as if Buju should have apologized to Reid for his behaviour but a report in a weekend paper claimed that Buju had disparaging words for Junior Reid at Weddy Weddy. So...where will this end? All we at YardFlex can say is let good sense prevail we don't endorse insult or any kind of verbal abuse....if Reid's daughter looks up to you and wanted to meet you, show some professional courtesy.
Honestly we are getting sick and tired of all these dancehall feuds, just when you think you have put it all behind you another one crops up. But what makes it worse is that these two artistes are well respected in the dancehall circles, not just locally – but on the internationally. They are admired and respected all over the world, and that it should involve two of the top artistes who are waving the reggae flag across the globe, it's really sad.
On that note, we hope that both go back to making beautiful music and living as one. It's time to bury the hatchet, but not in each other! Who knows you can both use this opportunity to do a combination and present a united front.

Hilton sold to Delroy Howell
The Hilton Kingston Hotel has reportedly been sold for about US$50 million to Delroy Howell of First Financial Caribbean parent company of the local Quick Cash Sun Money Transfer.
Hilton Hotel has been in the news lately as the embattled Cash Plus' Carlos Hill claimed to have bought it. The closing cost is above that claimed to have been paid by hill which was an unconfirmed US$42 million. But Cash Plus part in that is now history as First Financial bought the property from the previous owners Ron Kelly and Tobias Rowe. Interesting days are ahead for the hotel and the new owners.

Friday 13 a good day for R KELLY
Friday the 13 may spell bad omen for some people but certainly not for R Kelly as he beat the child pornography charge in Chicago. It's official, R Kelly was acquitted of all charges after less than 24 hours of deliberation, ending the long ordeal for the singer.
Kelly dabbed his face with a handkerchief and hugged each of his four attorneys after the verdict - not guilty on all 14 counts - was read. The Grammy award-winning singer had faced 15 years in prison if convicted.
Minutes later, surrounded by bodyguards, he left the courthouse
without comment. Dozens of fans screamed and cheered as he climbed into a waiting SUV.

Esco's solo career soaring to new heights
Everyone remembers Esco from the duet Leftside and Esco. He is now pursuing a solo career and has established a new record label called 111 Productions. You seldom find artistes who write and engineer their own music, voice themself, build their own rhythms, mix for themself and yet remain quite humble. Well, Esco has been doing all this.
Esco grew up in a musical surrounding and has always been around beautiful melodies. His father was a disc jockey and Marcia Griffiths was his step mother. This is one factor which has contributed to his musical career.
Esco has been on the dancehall scene for quite a number of years and has not changed much except becoming more fierce and aggressive. "One has to be fierce and aggressive to survive in the music industry." he says. Esco has had many accomplishments in his career but his greatest has been having a number one single.
Touring is a vital part of an artiste's career. Esco has been on tour for the last couple of months and will be heading off again this summer. He has been to Italy, Japan and Ghana.
From touring to making hit songs we just can't keep up with this busy artiste. This is all in an effort to be internationally acclaimed.
Esco is currently working on his new album and creating a different showcase and packaging as a Dancehall artiste. The album can be looked at as a double album. It features both sides to his music. Reggae versus Dancehall. Ladies can also be on the lookout as Esco promises "nuff tings for the ladies".
Bounty Killer, Assassin, Baby Cham, Damion Marley and Jay Z are some of the artistes whom Esco looks up to. He also wishes to do collaborations with Vybz Kartel, Tessanne Chin, Kanye West and Timberland. The Reggae and Dancehall industry has some talented and sexy female artistes; Kris Kelly, Spice and Tessanne Chin are the ones who this talented sexy artiste would consider taking out on a date.
"40% image, 30% talent, 30% networking and 100% love." This is the advise that Esco has for all aspiring artistes.

Reggae Sumfest enjoys Jamaican launch
Photography By: Milton Raynor

YardFlex went to Reggae Sumfest launch on Wednesday at the Hilton, Kingston and yes we have to big up the fact that they don't have a title sponsor and they are still going through. But the thing that got our attention is the fact that although Red Stripe is no longer the title sponsor they (Red Stripe) give Sumfest some money to be the exclusive liquor in the house selling. Now we don't understand what's happening, didn't we hear some artistes hitting out that they will be boycotting this beer? So Sumfest now give them the right to take their back a beer to enjoy the sweet sales down there. Guess that was nine day wonder thing then?

Sumfest launch really seem to hit a spot. One of the members in the audience at the launch asked Robert Russell from Summerfest if the festival will be adhering to the 2 am lock off time that other shows are being pressured to adhere to. And guess what...no such thing for Sumfest, the man proudly stated that the show will be going on till the sun comes up. Yes, it's sponsored by the Jamaica Tourist Board and they applied for a "special dispensation" levy, and don't forget that a lot of tourist coming with US dollars to spend. Plus they say they don't want the people leaving the venue in the wee hours of the morning to be hurt.

Hmmn...that's all we will say on this.

On to more exciting news from the launch, the festival will be streamed live on the internet for the first time so reggae fans all over the world can log unto Reggae Sumfest website, pay their money and enjoy the show from the comfort of their home.

Among the artistes that will be gracing the Sumfest 2008 stage will be Chris Brown, Bonafide a band out of the States, John Holt, Coco Tea, Tarrus Riley, Elephant Man, Etana, Beenie Man, Busy Signal, Mavado, Vybz Kartel and a whole host of others.

Tickets for the Festival have already started selling online and according to a representative from Island Stubs they have so far sold over Ja$500,000 worth of tickets.

A Suh mi sey
By: Joan Wilson
Its Father's Day again
Well father's day a come up Sunday and mi haffi talk bout di good and di bad one dem. Big up to di man dem whey all a comb dem daughter hair cause dem a single dad...yes a few a dem out deh. Is not only man alone a run leave dem responsibility, woman do it too. So kudos to the real responsible and caring ones who stick around to have a positive imput in their children's lives. Fi mi it's one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen when I see a father out with his kids and they are looking trustingly at him and you can see that there is no shortage of love in that family. YardFlex sey you must continue doing your thing.
Now to the wutless puppa dem, it really get to me when I have to listen to some of them bragging about how much yout dem get. Well dem right, dem really get di youth dem but dem not doing anything else wid dem, more time dem just pass dem on fi somebody else take up the responsibility.
What's the use of fathering kids if you don't take the time to visit them, have a one on one, give them the chance to talk to you, show them the facts of life from a man's point of view, be a good role model to them, in short let them have somebody to look up and emulate. Mothers are good, but no matter how good she is, there is still a void there for fathers. It's my dream that men stop being sperm donors and play a more active role in the lives of their children. Me tired of the men on the corner kneading their hand middle with the ganja, cruising around in expensive vehicles, looking more women and they don't have a clue how their children are managing.
Father's Day is coming up, I wonder how many men even know where their children are.
I'm not beating up on men, I just want to see father's having a more hands on approach in the lives of their kids, who knows maybe then we will begin to see a reduction in crime and more balanced individuals coming up in the society...a suh mi sey.

News Brief
Richie Spice leaves Fifth Element
Richie Spice and his long time management company Fifth Element Records have parted on friendly terms. Following months of speculations, company officials confirmed the rumours reminding fans and media members that it was a mutual decision taken in the best interest of Richie Spice's career.
Fifth Element Records helped in shaping the career of Richie Spice; and has expressed their blessings for him on his journey. After spending so many years atop charts around the world, Richie Spice has taken a decision to invest more time and energy into his own previously formed family based management company, aptly titled Bonner Cornerstone Music.
Bonner Cornerstone Music currently handles the affairs of family members, Spanner Banner and Snatcha Lion.
According to Richie Spice, the change was necessary, as he desires to take his career on a different path.
------------------------------
The Ban on Bonner
Richie Spice's latest entry on the albums chart, "Gideon Boot" has been slapped with an indefinite ban by the IRIE FM Programmes Department.
The ban extends not only to the material found on the album "Gideon Boot", but to all songs from his repertoire. According to IRIE FM officials, the song contained an expletive that could faintly be heard after the song had ended, and came as a surprise to Announcer Elise Kelly who was playing the song in her shift.
Representatives from VP Records also expressed their shock upon hearing of the ban, and have begun taking corrective steps to rectify the situation.
The album was part of a deal with ace producer Bobby Digital, who was charged with the responsibility of selecting the final copies of the songs for the album, released on VP records label. Unofficial word from insiders is suggesting that a mistake was made on the part of the person charged with the responsibility of mastering the songs for the final album cut.
Members of Bonner Cornerstone Music, at which Richie Spice is now officially based have expressed outrage at this mistake being made; one which is definitely casting a negative light on the singer who is noted for his cultural songs.

New internet gospel station coming
By: Joan Wilson
Former Love FM disc jockey Delroy Lingo who is now based in Connecticut will be launching an Internet Gospel station called Gospel Vybz and that mission will be the fulfillment of a dream for the radio jock.
Delingo who had a one on one with YardFlex shared that while being on air in Connecticut he was frustrated by lack of outlet for the traditional Caribbean gospel. And it was there that the dream was laid on his heart to create a station that would be the avenue to play those kinds of songs.
So five years ago he started buying the essential equipment he would need, now he is in sight of that vision.
Later on this month in at the Emmanuel Apostolic Church in Portmore he will be officially launching the Internet site. "The internet gospel station will be streaming live gospel shows, church services and playing your favourite traditional gospel music along with the modern ones," Delingo as he is popular called in the gospel arena told YardFlex.
Delingo, has been involved in the gospel music fraternity for over 30 years. He was Road Manager for the Golden Touch Gospel Band for several years, he later joined Life Production Company as concert manager, and assistant producer; a position that allowed him to work closely with local and international artistes.
In 1999, Delingo migrated to Atlanta, Georgia to host the first ever Caribbean Gospel Music programme Gospel Vibes on WATB 1420 Caribbean JAMS. The programme helped in opening the e door for Caribbean artiste such as Papa San, Grace Thrillers, Junior Tucker and Blood Brothers to perform in Atlanta.
The following year Delingo move to Hartford Connecticut and continued his radio ministry with Father G as co-host of Wake Up and Live on WESU 88.1 FM. He now hosts his own show Gospel Vybz.

Milk speaks out about her video
YardFlex caught up with Milk yesterday morning as she explains her feelings about the video that has been in circulation. I am sure some, if not everyone has heard or seen the video of Milk and her boyfriend. Milk has stated that she is deeply hurt by the fact that people are so evil. "Dj Liquid and I have been together for six years and the video only got out because he lost his phone," Milk explained
"I just want it all to stop because of my son; I don't want this to affect him as he is currently in high school. Some people are saying why I didn't think of him before? Well I wasn't thinking of him before because I didn't expect the video to go public. Yes it was wrong to videotape myself but nothing is wrong with what I was doing. It's not like I was having sex with a woman or anything like that. The public needs to stop acting as if it's taboo". These are the words of Milk herself.

By: Dave Lindo
Byron Lee and The Dragonaires will be coming in full force at the 2008 International Curry Festival which gets on the way on Sunday, June 15, 2008 at Central Broward Regional Park, in Lauderhill, Florida.

Exodus Never Fails to Deliver
By: Jodi-Kaye Watson
Photography By: Milton Raynor

The patrons who attended Exodus on Friday 6, 2008 left satisfied and blessed. Exodus brought out some of the best gospel reggae artistes. The line up was commendable.

The crowd saw the talented Tia Tamari who was a member of the group Perpetual Praise. Carlene Davis; one of the veterans in the business rocked the house with her performance and her hit "This Island Needs Jesus".

From one talented artiste to another, that's how the organizers kept the flow going. Young Omari did several songs but his hit "Tell Me a Who" got everyone in the crowd rocking and singing. The show was not just centered on singing and deejaying but the crowd also received ministering from the talented dance group Praise Academy of Dance who are currently celebrating their 15th Anniversary.

Kevin Downswell, Ryan Mark, Prodigal Son, Junior Tucker and Moses all set the show ablaze with their music. Kevin Downswell gave a spiritual performance, doing songs like "Stand" and "Close to You". Ryan Mark did a very personal set telling us about the passing of his child. He did the songs "God Have Me Back", "Tell The Devil No" and he also brought a new song from his new album "Tabernacle" called "Everything Happens for a Reason" which was dedicated to his daughter.

Prodigal Son, who is known as the Radikal Christian and who is also know to give an energetic performance did not fail to deliver. From his entrance unto the stage to his departure the crowd was on fire. He did songs like "Blessing" and "Lava Ground" which is a song that can make any crowd become alive.

Junior Tucker and Moses were the two artistes left before the man who everyone wanted to see. Junior Tucker, who is also another veteran in the business, got a good response from the audience. Moses who is known for giving an energetic and spiritual performance did just that. He did songs "Pray", "Only they That Feels It Knows", and gave us his testimony before leaving the stage.

Now it was the moment everyone was anticipating. It was time for Kirk Franklin! Kirk Franklin and his singers never failed to deliver as they kept giving us hit after hit and the crowd knew all the songs. Kirk Franklin and his band were the perfect act to close the show.

Levi Roots Launches Reggae Reggae Cook Book
Jamaican chef, musician and entrepreneur, Levi Roots, officially released his new Reggae Reggae Cook Book at a launch party held at the Jamaican High Commission on June 5.
Levi Roots, who originally hails from the parish of Clarendon and who went to Britain to join his mother at the age of 12, gained widespread fame from his successful appearance on the BBC television programme, 'The Dragon's Den,' in which small business owners pitch their ideas and seek financial backing for their projects from a panel of prominent businessmen.
He was one of the first success stories from that programme, with two of the panel members opting to invest in his Reggae Reggae Sauce. He garnered far more attention than most of the other hopefuls to appear on the programme because of his flamboyant personality and his idea of presenting his pitch in the form of a song.
Levi has now become a celebrity in Britain, making numerous TV appearances and even recording an extended version of his Reggae Reggae Sauce song to raise money for the Comic Relief charity. The product has become a great success, selling far above the original estimates, and according to Levi, even outselling tomato ketchup in certain months.
The cook book, which is published by Harper Collins, contains Levi's recipes for traditional Jamaican dishes as well as his original creations. It also contains some autobiographical material, with Levi talking about his childhood living with his grandmother in Jamaica and his move to join his mother and siblings in England, his troubles growing up and his eventual transformation to award-winning musician, chef, entrepreneur and now, author.
Peter Jones, the British businessman who chose to back Reggae Reggae Sauce, and who has become Levi's mentor and friend, introduced him at the book launch, making special mention of how dedicated and hardworking he is and how much of his time he still manages to devote to others.
Levi cited Mr. Jones, after his mother and grandmother, as one of his biggest influences and said that he hopes that his own trails and eventual triumph would prove to be an inspiration to others. He ended by leading the guests in a spirited sing-along of the Reggae Reggae Sauce Song.
Governor-General, Professor Sir Kenneth Hall, Lady Rheima Hall and Jamaican High Commissioner, Burchell Whiteman were also in attendance at the launch.

Passa Passa
Bwoy, what's happening with the Milky One. YardFlex took in the famous video everyone is now talking about and we have to say this woman don't play when it comes to going down on her man! She handled it like a pro, licking it sucking it giving the man a proper fix. Although we could not see the man's face we can tell he was one pleased customer, there has been assumptions that the guy is of a fluid nature.
But honestly, what's really happening? Everyone seemed to be staring their own pornography movie. I wonder who is next.

Yendi Phillips is a natural as Rising Star host
Last night (Sunday June 8) Yendi Phillips made her Digicel Rising Star job as host with the first audition was shown on TVJ at 8:00 pm.
The mad season of Rising Star is now 'officially' on as this is where the john public gets involved in the voting process.
Watching Yendi in action she was a natural as she interacted and did her thing. And we must say that she was a better dresser too!
From last night's show john public will be required to vote and select the top two from that location who will get the chance to move on to the studio segment of that show.
However, watching the final cut for St. Thomas, I must say I was not impressed, for the most part I was bored, as many of their contestant failed to put their all in the auditions.
Most of the times the judges Clyde McKenzie, Anthony Miller and Nadine Sutherland could be heard saying they wanted some more 'emotions', contestants need to 'put a little more effort' into their performance.
The big prize for this year will be $1 million, the chance to release two singles and a music video, with the runners up receiving $600,000 and $400,000 respectively.

Barrel Children
Bwoy di week past so fast dat mi all neva realize sey mi neva do mi column! Can you believe it. Yes dis week since as mi read one story bout barrel children mi a guh touch pon it. Is a ting whey mi always concern bout.
Life hard, without a doubt mi agree wid dat and sometimes di parents dem haffi guh look it in a next country, but a don't tink dat both parents should do dat and in di case whey is a single parent home, den dat parent should meck sure sey the children mentally and emotionally alright wid dat decision.
Some a di parents dem guh whey and yuh done know sey dem spoil di visa suh dem caan come and guh as dem please, so di poor child suffer. And to compensate fi di fact dat dem caan physically si di pickney, dem send all kinda stuff from foreign inna barrel come gi dem. Like sey di barrel supposed to meck up fi di fact dat dem not around.
Some pickney well adjusted and nuh matter what life throws at dem, dem just have dis survival instinct whey wi si dem excelling no matter what. But what about those who yearns after mummy or daddy and the only comfort dem can get is a barrel from foreign.
Can a barrel of goods sit down with that child, hug him and allow him to talk to you and really say what's on his mind. Can a barrel physically be there for that child and reassures him everyday that he is one of the most important gifts to you?
For the most part the barrel is just a way to ease the parent guilty conscience because they are not there physically for their children. So they over compensate by sometimes giving them things they don't even need...and don't think the children don't know this!
It’s a tough decision fi any parent make...how do you balance, putting food pon di table and physically being there for your child...without any food! Maybe you will have to go, but put proper steps in place, ensure you have a really good conversation with your child, show dem the realities of life and meck dem know yuh would move heaven and earth fi dem. And please, please, please, meck sure whoever yuh leaving them in the care of will not meck tings worse. Not every aunty and uncle a good parent figure. Monitor yuh pickney proper, cause yuh a guh dey too far fi si wha a gwaan...suh mi sey!

Meet gospel festival finalist Tarshea Williams
By: Joan Wilson
Born in Shiloah, St Elizabeth, Jamaica Festival Development Commission’s (JCDC) gospel finalist for 2008 Tarshea Williams grew up in Windsor, Clarendon then came to live with her mom in Kingston at age 13 where she attended the Denham Town High School.
Tarshea admitted to YardFlex that she has always had a love for gospel music but because she didn't know the proper outlet to work on her talent, that passion lay dormant. Until her aggressive sister decided to push her to expose her gift.
In 2005 she entered the gospel festival but made her exit in the elimination rounds. Four years later, she is back and this time she is in the finals and if Tarshea has her way she will be going all the way to the top!
"I want to win!" she told YardFlex! But this gospel singer is not going to beat herself up if she doesn't. She says that any which way the tide turns she is still in a win win situation. If she doesn't take the top spot, the exposure that she would have gotten from the event will still be good.
"I thank God for everything," she shared.
YardFlex wish Tarshea all the best in the competition to which the finals will be held in July.

Jody-Ann Wallace wins Miss Jamaica Global
Jody-Ann Wallace, 18-year-old Mannings High School student, is Miss Jamaica Global.
She copped various prizes, including an all-expense paid trip to London, a trip for two to the United States or any Caribbean destination of her choice as well as jewelery, courtesy of Rainbow Souvenirs, among others.
Interestingly, Wallace did not produce a top 10 talent piece, however, her poise and the confidence she exuded on the night gave her the edge.
On a night when third-place winner Natasha Brown was a big crowd favourite, she asserted, "I need to be number one in every area." As such, she was dominant in all other categories. "I like to think positively," she told reporters, adding, "I thought to myself, I'm gonna do my best to win. After the final five questions, I felt very confident that I'd make it into the top three."
She is now focussing on the international pageant to be held in London at the Watford Coliseum on August 10. Referring to that competition, she said: "I'm confident that I will represent my country well. I am going to give it my best."
Third-place winner Natasha Brown also walked away with the prize for most talented, while second-place winner Jodane Russell was named most aware.
Miss Global Jamaica will compete against at least 35 women from across the world.

Medical Assistant provided to Jamaica by Miles Ahead
The Jamaica Government is embracing faith tourism efforts which stimulate the economy and provide medical care to its nationals.
Jamaica's Ministry of Health and Environment recently expressed appreciation to the San Diego-based Miles Ahead nonprofit organization for its faith-based humanitarian mission, in which 80 medical professionals brought some US $5 million in free medical equipment, pharmaceuticals and health care to Montego Bay. The volunteers, which included specialist doctors, pediatricians, surgeons, dentists and nurses, held free clinics and served an estimated 6,000 residents. "The team must be commended for the excellent manner in which activities were organized to facilitate the treatment of patients, especially in deeply rural areas," noted the local government authorities, who were impressed with the fast turn around time for Pap smear results facilitated by use of modern equipment.
"Timely results are crucial to the prevention of cervical cancer, which affects hundreds of women in the region. We also wish to place on record our special thanks for the gifts of equipment donated to the local health system. Accept our very best wishes for your future endeavours," the Ministry of Health and Environment stated.
Jamaica's Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett recently disclosed that Jamaica is actively working to target the important and growing faith-based travel market, highlighting the work of former NFL player Pastor Miles McPherson and his group of almost 300 Miles Ahead volunteers. Other teams of volunteers, in conjunction with local churches and community organizations, conducted sports clinics, deaf education workshops, and school assemblies, and helped renovate two local elementary schools.
Andria Hall, a US-based faith tourism expert and internationally recognized journalist and author who was on island for the outreach efforts, said she was heartened to see faith tourism - a niche she has long promoted in the region - coming to reality. "There is so much we can accomplish when we touch and agree on committing our work to the Lord," said the former CNN News Anchor, who called on regional governments, the private sector and churches to work in close collaboration to target this market for the benefit of local communities.
Miles Ahead traveled to Jamaica as part of the Jamaica Broilers Group's 50th anniversary celebrations and three major family-oriented festivals, under the Best Dressed 50 Fest banner, presented in Mandeville, Montego Bay and Kingston. Messages were presented by evangelists Luis and Andrew Palau as well as McPherson himself.
Robert Levy, president of Jamaica Broilers, said his corporation and country were privileged to have Miles McPherson and Miles Ahead on the island, while gospel musician Papa San, who performed to tens of thousands during the crusade nights, said "It's been great to minister to my island, Jamaica."
"The doctors you brought and the school repairs, it's all so beautiful. There is a way out, not through guns, not through prostitution, but through Jesus Christ - seek Him first," said former Jamaica soccer star Paul "Tegat" Davis. He joined with former Jamaica national Warren Barrett and a team of athletes led by ex-NBA basketball player Zack Jones as well as Darren Carrington, an ex-NFL player, to conduct free sports clinics for young people. McPherson, referring to Miles Ahead's participation in the growing faith tourism movement in the Caribbean, said "People of faith have a gift they are called to share. Once people of faith know a need, they will want to respond. Something supernatural happens when someone invests in another person's life."
Video highlights of the outreach and the crusades are available at the recently launched interactive rich media site www.mileshead.tv.

YardFlex Interview With Multi -World Clash Champions Killamanjaro
By: Dave Lindo
Killamanjaro is one of the long standing sound systems in the business who has carved a name for themselves as a sound system with true class and quality. Named after the famous mountain in Africa, Killamanjaro has stood tall, whether in fierce sound clashes or 'nicing' up a dance or party with some 'wicked' selections. YardFlex caught up with the owner, popularly known as Papajaro.
YardFlex: In what year and how did Killamanjaro get started?
Papajaro: The sound was started in the summer of 1969 while I was at school. My brother had a sound system, and I developed a love for it. After some years my brother migrated to the UK, and left the sound system with our father. My father operated it for awhile and then sold it. At that point I decided that I was going to build my own sound system.
Yardflex: In the early days it was said that the sound used to be transported in a VW van. People were appalled by its small size, yet its excellent sound quality exceeded that of sound systems many times bigger. What was the secret in getting such high sound quality from a small system?
Papajaro: This was not an accident (size), it was a deliberate design. Since this sound system was going to be moving from place to place. I designed it as small as I could with the highest level of efficiency.
YardFlex: Who were the members of your team in the 'early days'?
Papajaro: In the early days we had artistes like: Super Cat, Early B, Jim Kelly, Dirty Harry, and selector Ainsley.
YardFlex: What was the vibes like in those days?
Papajaro: The vibes was great. It was doing what you love, while enjoying yourself, and not worry about some of the dangers that exist now.
YardFlex: In the 'rub a dub' era, (artistes performing live on the version), who were some of the artistes who used to work on Jaro?
Papajaro: Super Cat, Early B, Jim Kelly, Dirty Harry, Lone Ranger, Buro Banton, Charley Chaplin, Ninjaman, Hammermouth, Junior Cat, and Daddy Shark.
YardFlex: Who would you consider to be the most talented artiste (s) to work on your sound?
Papajaro: Everybody had their own unique style, so it is very hard to say who was most talented.
YardFlex: What was the payroll like in those days? How much did the sound play for?
Papajaro: I can't recall what that was, but I know it was very small. In those days it was more about the love for music, than the love for money.
YardFlex: What was the transition like in changing from a 'rub a dub' sound to the time when dub plates were the order of the day?
Papajaro: Killamanjaro did not change from being a 'rub a dub' sound system; we just added another dimension, so that (the) transition was quite smooth. Killamanjaro still plays at 'rub a dub' sessions although this is not as frequent as a juggling session.
YardFlex: What are some of Killamanjaro’s biggest achievements?
Papajaro: Some of the big achievements are: winning Killamanjaro/KingAddies clash in Portmore, Killamanjaro/DavidRodigan (clash) in Miami, WorldClash 2000 in New York, Killamanjaro/SilverHawk (clash) at Skateland (Half Way Tree).
YardFlex: What has or have been the most memorable achievement (s) to date?
Papajaro: The most memorable one is the Killamanjaro/KingAddies clash in Portmore.
YardFlex: It was believed by many that when Ricky Trooper left the sound it would affect its progress, was that the case?
Papajaro: Yes, it affected us, but not to a great extent.
YardFlex: Where overseas has Killamanjaro played?
Papajaro: We have toured places like the USA, Canada, UK, Japan, Kenya, Germany, Holland, France, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland, Trinidad, Guyana, Belize, Antigua, St Kitts, St Croix, St Vincent, St Thomas, St Johns, St Maarten, St Lucia, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman.
YardFlex: Where do you presently have the largest fan base, both locally and overseas?
Papajaro: We have large fan base both locally and abroad.
YardFlex: What changes has the sound gone through in the past 5 years?
Papajaro: We have not gone through any major changes over the last 5 years, but we always maintain and upgrade our sound system to keep it in tip top shape.
YardFlex: What plans do you have for the future?
Papajaro: We have a few things planned for the future, but we do not want to preempt them.
YardFlex: Looking at the sound system business now compared to the early days would you say it has gotten better or worst?
Papajaro: The sound system business has come a long way from what it was in the past, but I personally liked it better then.
YardFlex: What do you think can be done to improve it (sound system business)?
Papajaro: There is no quick fix, because there are a lot of factors that brought the business to where it is. For example; high crime rate, and unemployment. We have a new culture in Jamaica, and the longer it takes to start lowering the crime and unemployment, the harder it will be to correct the problem. Apart from the above, people need to know that the police are serious about the 2:00am shut off time, and should start coming out earlier.

Money O Sundays off to good start
Macka Diamond's Money O Sundays kicked off last week in Old Harbour, (Beside the Old Harbour Tax Office).
The free event enjoyed a decent turnout. Speaking with Karl Larmond he said at first the people were rather skeptical regarding the fact whether Macka would turn up or not, but as soon as Macka arrived at the venue they started coming in.
The vibes was right and patrons enjoyed themselves to the max. The only stipulation on the night came from the police and it was that they obeyed the night noise act. Keeping that fact in mind the dance ended at 2:30 am. "There are a lot of weekly events and Macka Diamond wanted to do something in that vein," Karl Larmond told YardFlex.
Unlike some events that attract a cover charge, Money O Sundays is free and come Sunday night, it is hoped that the DJ will have a special guest artiste there. "She is talking to a certain top artiste and everything looks promising," Larmond promised.

Mavado freed of gun charges
Dancehall artiste Mavado had the gun-related charges against dropped earlier today when he appeared in the Gun Court in Kingston.
According to IrieFM, the director of public prosecution made an order that the proceedings should not continue after the police told the court this week that the witnesses had migrated.
These charges were the reason for him being refused entrance to the US awhile back. Hopefully, with the charges dropped, the DJ will once again be able to travel to the US.
July 27th last year, it was alleged that Mavado was involved in a shooting incident on Mannings Hill Road in St. Andrew.

Reggae Boys deliver 5-1 Spanking on St. Vincent.
By: Dwight Fraser and Devon Anderson

Jamaica's senior Reggae Boyz turned in a spirited but somewhat patchy performance to defeat the St. Vincent and the Grenadines 5-1 in their friendly international at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica on Tuesday night.

Marlon King, (in the 26th and 42nd minutes), led the way for the Rene Simoes coached squad as the hard running Demar Phillips, of Stoke City in England, got his name on the score sheet as well, with a beautiful finish earlier in the 17th minute of play to open the scoring and send the spectators in a frenzy.

Later on in the second half St. Vincent began attacking more aggressively but the Reggae Boyz played well to shut them down, by using the one-two passing and utilizing the flanks to get the better of their Caribbean neighbours.

The man who led Jamaica's campaign in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup in France, Deon Burton, found the back of the net in minute 74 and Captain Ricardo Gardner finished the job with another goal 13 minutes from time. Marlon James had the consollation goal for the Grenadines in the 56th minute.

Playing in front of about 10,000 spectators all clad in their gold and green, ace striker Marlon King got Jamaica on the score sheet in the 26th minute as the half ended 3-nil.

Jamaica's next assignment is against Trinidad and Tobago at the Marvin Lee Stadium on Saturday, in a return friendly.

Mavado to star in movie
Critiques may be having a field day trying to prevent dancehall artiste from going to the States, but that doesn't stop the artiste from making great strides in his career.
News is that Mavado will be making his film debut this summer when he will appear in the Steve "Tehut-Nine" McAlpin directed 'What Goes Around' movie.
Mavado will be walking in the footsteps of other dancehall artistes such as Harry Toddler, Ninja Man, Beenie Man and others who have appeared in movies.
YardFlex understand that the singjay will be playing the role of a sinister character known only as "Gully God". The film will also features other Dancehall Recording artists like KC Jockey, the late Rraw Dawg, and Flippa Mafia who is with popular New York sound system selector Nohard "Noah" Grant ("Son-Son" in Bashment: The Fork in the Road) encumber lead roles alongside Sakina Samuda and Kim Goss.
There really seem to be no stopping the DJ as only last week it was announced that Mavado would be included in a promotional campaign by Nike for the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

Joke of The Day
The priest in a small Irish village loved his chickens that he kept in the coop behind the church.
One Sunday morning before mass, he went to feed the birds and discovered that the cock was missing.
He knew about the cock fights in the village, so he decided to question his parishioners in church.
During mass, he asked his congregation, 'Has anybody got a cock?' All the men stood up.
'No, no, that wasn't what I meant. Has anybody seen a cock?' All the women stood up.
'No, no, that wasn't what I meant either. Has anybody seen a cock that doesn't belong to them?' Half the women stood up !
'No, no, no, that wasn't what I meant. What I really really mean is,
has anybody seen MY cock?' Sixteen altar boys, two priests and a goat stood up!

Ashanti's 'Declaration' Begins Today
Ashanti's fourth album The Declaration will officially hit the shelves today.
The album includes production from A-list producers Jermaine Dupri, LT Hutton, Babyface, Pharrell Williams, Bryan-Michael Cox and more!
"One of the reasons I call the album 'The Declaration,' is because I feel it's important to present all sides of what being a woman is about," she says. "Historically, we've always been relegated to the bottom of the totem pole, whether it's business or the battle of the sexes or just empowering each other. I want this album to make people feel stronger about themselves. I've always used the ups and downs in my own life as well as others close to me as a motivational tool and I hope my music comes off that way. I felt a lot of passion making this record. I loved every minute I was in the studio." Ashanti was quoted as saying to starpulse.com
Ashanti continues "The Declaration" movement by launching a female empowerment site, www.ideclareme.com.

Better Mus Come makes world premiere Saturday
Better Mus' Come a suspense drama that was set in 1977 against the backdrop of political gang activity will make its world premier at the Flashpoint Film Festival on Saturday, June 7 at Fort Charles, Port Royal. The storyline was brought to life with the added talent of the exceptional and dynamic Nicole Grey, Roger Guenveur Smith (American Gangster, Malcolm X, Do the Right Thing), Everaldo Creary, Ricardo Orgill and Dwayne Pusey.
"Through reading about the political tensions in the seventies, I wanted to use this film to explore the root of many of our post-independence problems," commented director of the film Storm Saulter. "I became fascinated with the violent culture that was born with the arming of certain groups which has created a culture of violence that has stayed with Jamaica, and is identified with Jamaicans worldwide," he continued.
Producing the film did not come without its challenges as the director explained, "It was very hard to get proper special effects material and props into the island is exploding blood, blank shells, fake movie guns. The people we were renting from in Hollywood thought it was too dangerous here, and that someone would steal the guns and start a militia or something - a militia with fake m16's." "The Government needs to work out an easier approach for us filmmakers to get the right tools to do a world class job, safely. However the JDF and the JCF came through for us and provided our prop guns and blank shells, and security. They were excellent and I give them the highest respect and ratings for being so professional and helping us get the job done."

Bus Fare Gone Sky High
By: Jodi-Kaye Watson
It seems like the price of everything is rising except the salary of Jamaicans. It has been announced that The Office of Utilities Regulation has approved a 25 per cent increase for rural buses and hackney carriages. Jamaica is a nice place to live, but it seems so impossible when you have citizens working for minimum wage while at the same time bus fares are increasing. When you really think about it $3,700 per week cannot do much. There are bills to pay, children have to go to school and people have to eat.
No working individual should take home less than $6,000 per week when considering the economic situation Jamaica is facing. I remember, just the other day one loaf of bread was for $95, now when you visit retail outlets it's $190 for that same loaf of bread! This is unbelievable! Jamaica needs a miracle if we are going to survive.
You have some individuals who have to take two or three public vehicles to get to work, now with imminent increase in bus fares they may as well stay home, as they may be better off. It seems as if some Jamaicans are only working to pay bus fare and buy lunch. Jamaicans really have it hard. It makes no sense for us to play the blame game as it will not make the situation better. All that I can say is... "be strong Jamaicans and pray for a miracle because we really need it."

Junior Reid explains
Junior Reid a talk up di tings regarding his kick off with Buju Banton at Best of the Best. He was on Richie B's programme yesterday and in the Chat! The singer is contending that the only reason he reacted to Buju's hailing like that was because Buju was playing the hypocrite. Buju had earlier referred to him Junior in the earring of his daughter Destiny as Junior Greed and then he hailed him as if he hadn't just said something about him. According to Junior that's why he called him a fish. Well, seems as if the drama doesn't end!

News Brief
Sizzla decides to cancel the remaining part of his French tour
Dancehall artiste Sizzla went AWOl in France where he was scheduled to perform on May 29 in Ramonville near Toulouse, then on Sunday June 1 at Montpellier. According to reports Sizzla is said to have suddenly decided to cancel the remainder of his French tour. He left suddenly for Jamaica without even giving formal notice of his decision to the organizers of the remaining concerts.
Tjenbé Rèd expressed its sadness following Sizzla's incomprehensible and hardly professional decision. According to them his action bring into question the very possibility of a dialogue with him.
YardFlex is still confused on the whole drama as the press release sent from France would indicate that his actions could have something to with the Reggae Compassionate Act (RCA) where artistes agree not to do any songs hitting out against homosexual.

Reggae Lovers Unite for Freedom of Speech
Reggae lovers are fighting back! There is a commission formed to defend freedom of speech where reggae music is concerned.
Based on the tremendous pressure some dancehall artistes have been facing with gay rights group the commission is now formed to fight back.
The most recent attack surfaced in Waterloo, Ontario on May 10th where Mr Vegas was scheduled to perform but could not, as the venue was threatened by gay activists stating that if Vegas perform they would picket the event.
Unfortunately, the venue cancelled the show to avoid the unwanted negative attention the establishment would receive had the show gone
on. In an effort to fight these many cancellations and in some cases song withdrawals, blogger Maria Jackson has put a group together called REGGAE LOVERS FOR FREEDOM OF SPEECH. The purpose of the group is to investigate and challenge these gay activists as oppose to simply giving in to their every requests. The group which currently has members hailing from different parts of the world is open to the public and does invite any and everyone who believes that reggae is being unfairly targeted to join the fight.

UCLA Celebrates a Weekend of Peace, Love, & Music
By: Michelle Thomas
Photography By: Marie Mendoza

UCLA celebrated their 22nd Annual Jazz Reggae Festival over the Memorial Day weekend. This year’s theme was "A weekend of peace, love, and music". Two music filled days with some of the great Jazz, Hip Hop, & Reggae Artistes.

Jam Day hosted Dr. Lonnie Smith who's smooth and soulful sounds generated a great response from the crowd. John Densmore and The Tribal Jazz Band awakened the lively spirits in each of our souls. They played a Salsa flavored "Doors" tune that the audience loved. From the percussion, to Art Ellis' flute & sax playing; each beat and note was full of passion and intensity. The African drum beats added to the thrilling performance. We asked Densmore how he enjoyed the crowd and he said, "I loved it. We got everybody up and dancing."

The dynamic of the crowd changed after an energizing performance by Immortal Technique. The UCLA crowd was drawn to him like a magnet, bouncing to each track. DJ GI Joe turned it out on the 1's & 2's cutting up a track with his wicked style and grace. Technique's politically conscious lyrics made the fans wild as he jumped off the stage into the crowd.

Gaopele, known as the bay area queen, celebrated her daughter's first birthday along with the UCLA festivities. Vegas warned about lyrics
The New National Party (NNP) government in Grenada said it was forced to caution Jamaican dance hall artiste Vegas about using offensive lyrics during his recent live performance at one of its rallies, this according to a report on radiojamaica.com
Youth Minister Senator Emmalin Pierre made her disclosure in response to public concerns as the party faced a likely fall-out over another pre-election concert.
Local media have reported that Vegas' performance featured songs promoting drug use and branding women as prostitutes in the presence of ruling party officials.
Miss Pierre said the artiste was advised that he should immediately refrain from offensive lyrics and he complied.
Callers to talk shows had complained against the choice of some of the lyrics used by Vegas, some of which were played back on several local TV stations.
A month ago, there was public outcry following a concert with another Jamaican artiste Beenie Man.
This forced NNP officials to apologize for aspects of the event.
General elections are constitutionally due in Grenada by April 2009 but speculation has been mounting that polling day could be next month.

LIGHTNING TO THE WORLD
BY: Devon Anderson & Dwight Fraser
Twenty-one-year-old sensation Usain 'lightning' Bolt is the new world record holder in the men's 100 metres after smashing his country man Asafa Powell's 10 month old mark of 9.74 to register 9.72 the fastest by any human over the distance to date.
Running at the Reebok Grand Prix at the Icahan Stadium in Randall's Island New York, Bolt defeated world championship triple gold medalist Tyson Gay (9.85) with a scintillating run to come out victorious.
The former William Knibb runner who goes by the pet name 'Lightning' was running his fifth 100 metres as a senior, and continued his assault on track and field most prestigious event after running 9.76 and 9.92 seconds earlier this month in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago respectively.
Usain was not the only Jamaican winner at the meet as world olympic 100 metres champion Veronica Campbell-Brown won the 100 metres in a meet and world leading time of 10.91 seconds bettering her own 10.93 mark set at last year's meet.
YardFlex would like to congratulate both athletes on their great accomplishment, and hope they can hold their form as they approach the 28th Olympic Games in Beijing, China slated between August 8-24 this year.

50 Cent's home destroyed by fire
The home at the center of a bitter legal dispute between 50 Cent and his son's mother was destroyed by a suspicious fire early Friday morning.
Six people, including his 10-year-old son, Marquise and Shaniqua Tompkins, 50's ex-girlfriend, were taken to a hospital after suffering smoke inhalation and later released. A firefighter also suffered a minor eye injury, officials said. 50, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, doesn't live in the home and wasn't there at the time.
A representative for the rapper said, "Informed this morning while filming a new motion picture on location in Louisiana, Curtis Jackson expressed deep concern over this fire at his property. He is extremely thankful that everyone including his son, Marquise, escaped the burning house safely. He is confident that authorities will be conducting a thorough investigation of the incident and is eager to review their findings."
Suffolk County arson squad Investigators were called to the scene after Dix Hills Fire Chief, Larry Feld thought the blaze suspicious.
Tompkins filed a lawsuit against 50 earlier this year claiming he had promised her a house more than a decade ago, but that since their breakup, he now wants to evict her and their 10-year-old son from the home. Tompkins' lawyer, Paul Catsandonis, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that the dispute over the house had become "extremely, extremely contentious in recent days." Although he declined to be specific, he said there was an "extremely dangerous incident" Monday in his Manhattan office, while taking a deposition for the lawsuit.
The dispute was "involving the parties in question," he said, adding that the case was back on the calendar in state Supreme Court in Manhattan on June 10. Catsandonis said 50 paid about $2.4 million for the house last year, one of the largest in the Long Island neighborhood of Dix Hills.
50's ex-girlfriend Shaniqua is making accusation that he is involved in the fire and that he tried to kill his own son.
