Armed Man Holding Two Hostages At Hillary Clinton

senatorclinton.jpgWhat in the world is happening... Yardflex came across this story on mtv.com An unknown, armed man went into presidential-hopeful Senator Hillary Clinton's campaign office in Rochester, New Hampshire, on Friday afternoon (November 30), with what appeared to be a bomb strapped to his chest, according to CNN. Two campaign workers are reportedly being held hostage inside Clinton's office, and police snipers and cruisers have surrounded the premises in an attempt to negotiate with the man, who is described as in his 40s. Clinton is currently in the Washington, D.C., area. "We are in close contact with state and local authorities and are acting at their direction," Clinton said in a statement, according to The Associated Press. "We will release additional details as appropriate."

CNN reports that police were called to the office at about 1 p.m. and surrounded the offices by 2 p.m. A woman and her baby were said to have been released by the hostage-taker, and one witness, Lettie Tzizik, told the news outlet she had spoken with the woman soon after she was released and fled for cover in a nearby store.

hilary_campaign_office.jpgA young woman with a 6-month- or 8-month-old infant came rushing into the store just in tears, and she said, "You need to call 911," Tzizik said. "A man has just walked into the Clinton office, opened his coat and showed us a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape."

Clinton, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, was set to deliver a speech at 3 p.m. during a Democratic National Committee event. She canceled that appearance because of the hostage situation.

"Unfortunately as some of you know, there is a hostage situation in New Hampshire involving a Clinton campaign staff person," DNC Chairman Howard Dean told those who were in attendance for the event. "The
details are sketchy at this time, but understandably Senator Clinton is now dealing with this very difficult problem and she is not going to be able to join us today. And we will keep them in our prayers
and hope for a resolution to this situation in New Hampshire."

According to CNN, the nearby campaign office of Senator Barack Obama, another Democrat seeking his party's nomination, was locked down as a precautionary measure. The offices of former senator and Democratic
candidate John Edwards were also closed.

Akon Will get charged for tossing minor

akon.jpg

What's wrong with Akon. You would think he would learn from his mistakes!

Akon has been charged with a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a minor and second-degree harassment in connection with a controversial concert this summer in Fishkill, New York, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal. He is reportedly due to be arraigned in a local court on Monday.

During the show, which took place on June 3 and was caught on fans' cell phone cameras, Akon allegedly threw a 15-year-old fan into the crowd. According to the Journal, a small object sailed by Akon's shoulder as he was about to start performing a song onstage, which prompted him to say, "Oh, wait a minute. What was that?" He then urged the crowd to "point him out, point him out. Who is he?"

Audience members identified the alleged culprit, after which a security guard asked Akon if he wanted the boy brought onstage. Akon responded, "So go get him. Bring him out to me."

As the fan was brought to the stage, Akon removed his shirt and chain and then grabbed the boy, tossed him over his shoulder and threw him into the crowd, saying, "Now we can start the show, y'all ready." A moment later, Akon looked down at the crowd and said, "He's OK, he's all right," then shortly later chastised the audience for a perceived lack of support. "See, now you got me feeling by myself," he said in the cell phone video footage. "I thought I had fans and support." According to TMZ.com, after the child was thrown, he fell on another teen who later said she had been diagnosed with a concussion.

The Journal reported that the boy's mother contacted authorities and gave them her son's name, which has not been revealed. Police had been seeking the boy to see if he'd been injured in the incident and was interested in pressing charges. The Journal also said the uninjured boy refused medical treatment on site and left right after the incident. Akon's attorney subsequently released a statement proclaiming the singer's innocence in the bizarre episode.

"Given the information that we have reviewed to date, it does not appear to us that Akon was involved in any criminal conduct whatsoever," read a statement from the MC's attorney, Benjamin Brafman. "We are prepared to fully cooperate with any law enforcement agency that may be investigating this incident. We are confident that after a thorough investigation it will be apparent that no criminal prosecution of Akon is warranted."

The Fishkill incident wasn't Akon's only concert controversy this year, however. In May, he lost his Verizon tour sponsorship for aggressively randy onstage conduct with an underage girl. And in late October, his planned show at Atlanta's Emory University was canceled after several people, including his drummer, were injured while setting up for the gig.

High Tech "Invisible" African American

By: Elizabeth Smith

dr.mark_dean.jpgWhy wait on focus months or days to delve into our history and celebrate the achievements of those from the African Diaspora? Yardflex caught onto the fact that Dr. Mark Dean, who most of you have never heard of, was not recognised for his achievements at a recent IBM 20th anniversary celebration; when in fact this African American helped to initiate a digital revolution.

Having more than 30 patents pending, Dr Dean is not only a Vice President with IBM, he also is the architect of the modern-day personal computer. As the holder of three of the original nine patents on the computer that all PCs are based on, Dr Dean is featured in the National Hall of Inventors. In fact his ingenuity helped to start an era that created people like Bill Gates and Dell Computer's Michael Dell; millions of jobs in information technology can be traced back to him.

So what is the reason that his praises are not sufficiently lauded you ask, when in fact Dr Dean helped to shape the landscape of our society.? It is the consequence of a systemic poison known too well to "African Westerners" who are still denied substantial and meaningful representation in mass media.

Not the first to be treated like a mere footnote, Dr. Dean joins the ranks of other prestigious African American inventors who have been blatantly overlooked. John Stanard, inventor of the refrigerator, George Sampson, creator of the clothes dryer, Alexander Miles brought us the elevator and Lewis Latimer – the electric lamp.

None of these great inventors should be allowed to go quietly unnoticed. They are important and serve as great inspirations for particularly African American youth.

Technically Dr Dean cannot be credited as creating the computer, an English mathematician, Alan Turing mastered that. However, for the machine we use today for homes and small businesses, he deserves great praise, as he led a team that developed the interior architecture (ISA systems) that enables multiple devices, like modems and printers to be connected to personal computers.

Recently, Dr Dean again made history by leading the design team that engineered the first 1-gigahertz processor chip; another big stride in making computers faster and smaller.

Born in 1957, Dr. Dean is still full of inventive ideas. We must ensure his story is kept in the mix when technological advances are being celebrated.

HIV-positive and still sexy

aids_logo.jpg"You can have your sexuality...you don't have to lose it because you have HIV"

People tend to think that contracting HIV can spell the end of their sex lives, but HIV-positive Africans of all ages are now being urged to reclaim their sexuality and live healthy, normal lives.

"I got this [HIV] through sex, so [I thought] my sexuality was gone and I felt I needed to stop dressing attractively and wait to die," Florence Anam, 28, an information officer at the Kenya Network of Women with AIDS, told IRIN/PlusNews.

Anam said when she first revealed she was HIV-positive, many men avoided her, believing she was out to infect them; she herself had no interest in sex for several months after she was diagnosed. However, she has since discovered she can continue having and enjoying sex, despite being HIV-positive.

"My take on this is that you can have your sexuality ... you don't have to lose it because you have HIV, you just have to be responsible," she said, adding that sex "has to be good or I'm not having it".

At a recent workshop by the Africa Regional Sexuality Resource Centre (ARSRC), at its Sexuality Institute in Kenya's coastal city of Mombasa, participants heard that there was a need to rethink sexuality in the context of disease, particularly chronic infections such as HIV.

"HIV as a condition is highly moralised; people face stigma because they are perceived by society to have been sexually immoral," said Richmond Tiemoko, director of ARSRC.

"Women are particularly affected by this type of stigma because they are expected to be the keepers of society's morality, so contracting HIV is seen as a great failure on their part." He said it was important that people living with HIV recognised and claimed their right to sexuality and sexual intercourse.

The Sexuality Institute provides a forum for African health professionals to discuss ways of promoting more positive attitudes towards sexuality in the region.

"We believe that to reduce HIV and promote well-being, we need to adopt a positive discourse on sex and sexuality," said Tiemoko. "Discussing issues of sexual violence, stigma, self-esteem and HIV enables people to have a better understanding of their links with sexuality and to make them less taboo."

I am a human being with sexual needs and feelings, which need fulfillment without apologies to anyone.
The workshop was attended by researchers, government workers and staff from local non-governmental organisations with a reproductive health or AIDS focus. They were encouraged to incorporate messages about healthy sexuality into their programmes for people living with HIV.

"When first diagnosed, I considered sex dirty and blamed it for my fate," Asunta Wagura, executive director of the Kenya Network of Women with AIDS, said in a recent interview with the Sexuality in Africa magazine, an ARSRC publication. "I suppressed this need for a long time, until I could suppress it no more and openly declared, 'I am a human being with sexual needs and feelings, which need fulfillment without apologies to anyone'."

Wagura, who has publicly declared her HIV status, caused controversy when she decided to have a child in 2006. Her son was born healthy and has so far tested HIV-negative.

"I was criticised all round ... the view is that people living with HIV/AIDS should not think along those lines, because having a baby involves sexual intercourse," she said.

Speaking at the workshop, Dr Sylvia Tamale, dean of law at Uganda's Makerere University, said there was a 'disconnect' between sex in a health or medical context, and sex in a pleasure context.

"There is a need to 'unlearn' and refine some of the lessons that society teaches us, and open people's minds," she said, adding that sexuality counselling could go a long way towards changing perceptions.

The ARSRC holds rotating workshops annually in Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa. The Mombasa workshop was hosted in conjunction with their partner organisation in Kenya, the Population Council, an international non-governmental reproductive health organisation.

Rodney King shot!

rodney_king.jpgRodney King, famous for a videotaped beating from Los Angeles police back in 1991, was shot and wounded on a San Bernardino street corner late Wednesday.

According to tmz.com King called Rialto police just before midnight to report the shooting. According to Sgt. Don Lewis, King was struck in the face and arm with what appeared to be pellets or birdshot. When
police arrived at King's home, they reported that King and others inside appeared drunk. The man got shot in the face -- he deserves a drink!

Junior Reid in legal tussle

junior_reid.jpgSongs of Salvation CEO, Glenford Bryan and international singer Junior Reid is now embroiled in a legal tussle. According to Bryan who is represented by legal firm Sandra C Johnson and Company he had to take the matter further as efforts to get Junior Reid to pay him what is owed to him has been abusive and futile.

Even after Reid received a letter and follow up communications from his lawyer he has been stiff-necked and according to Bryan instructed his (Bryan's) lawyer not to call him again.

The whole drama started in February 2006 when Reid entered into a contract with Bryan for the sale of various musical equipment which amounted to over JA$700,000. After agreeing to pay in installments this broke down after a couple payments according to the receipts Yardflex has in its possession, six payments were made with the largest being JA$190,000.

In a letter sent out by Bryan's lawyer on October 5, 2007 the sum of JA$322,777.77 was being requested to be paid in 30 days time. The letter implied that if Reid failed to make the court's intervention would be sought.

The 30 days grace period has passed and there is no real end to this battle. According to Bryan he will be taking further steps to ensure the money is paid up.

When the Yardflex contacted Junior Reid re the allegations he said it was a personal matter and intimated that himself and Bryan had unfinished business.

According to Reid whenever they were supposed to meet to thrash out things either Bryan didn't show for one reason or another or he Junior Reid was off the island.

Junior Reid also stressed to Yardflex that "if Mr. Bryan nuh want settle to man an man, then dem will have to settle it through the courts."

Yardflex will keep you posted on this development.

Hot it Up – full of hits

By Joan Wilson

mr.vegas.jpgYardflex got its hands on a copy of Vegas' new album "Hot It Up" and all we can say is that it's worth the effort of listening.

Hot It Comes with a lot Vegas chart topper and makes the experience an enjoyable cruise into listening land.

The album kicks off with the emotion puller "Do You Know" yes, that same track that shows Vegas sensitive side as he takes a trek into the emotional roller coaster that's called postpartum depression. This song rode every local chart and created havoc on the international scene.

Track two "Tamborine" is meant to take you out of that mood and bring on a more festive vibes. The soca-laced song is just the thing to do it too.

You should be sweating now and ready to really go into a full workout and track number 3 is just the thing to do it "Hot Wuk" needs no introduction. It is still maintaining a dominant presence on the scene and even made its way to the Billboard Hot R&B chart.

The dancing vibes continues with you track number 4, "Tek Weh Yuhself" another song that is creating mad vibes in the dancehall.

This song is showing no sign of fading in the background any time soon.

Vegas and Jovi Rockwell team up for this slow, oldies groove remake of Errol Dunkley, "You Gonna Need Me". It carries a fun vibe to it and you can almost feel yourself getting caught up in the fun and frolic coming across in the song.

"Lean Wid It" comes in at number 7 on the album followed by the mad "Raging Bull" with Over Mars. We are talking some classic stuff here.

Other tracks featured on the album are "Sitting On My Corner", "Bloodstain" featuring Sadeke, 'Gangster Prayer", "We Nuh Want Nuh Friend", "Meck Dem RIP", "Up and Live", "Talk The Things Dem" featuring Opal and "Taxi Fare" featuring Mr. Lex.

Executively produced by Mr. Vegas "Hot It Up" is the album for the archives of classic collections.

Brandy almost off the hook

brandy.jpgWill lady luck smile on Brandy? Well any day now the R&B diva could find herself off the hook as time is winding down the the L.A. City Attorney's Office to file criminal charges against Brandy, who was involved in a multiple car crash that killed Awatef Aboudihaj, the mother of two boys. The first anniversary of the accident, December 30, is fast approaching, but Brandy has not been charged.

According to TMZ the City Attorney's Office plans to make a decision at the very last moment. If charges aren't filed, chances are the public wouldn't notice over the holidays and the case would quietly go away.

The website had an exclusive chat with Bill Sayed, lawyer for the victim's husband, Marouane Hdidou. Sayed questioned the delay, saying, "There is a death and obviously reckless driving involved, which is
enough evidence for an involuntary manslaughter charge. As to why the City Attorney has taken this long? I think we would all like to know."

Over the past year, Brandy has pursued her usual activities; shopping, partying and living a normal life. Sayed says, "Brandy continues to live life with really no negative results...doing what Brandy is
doing...as if though nothing has occurred here." He also describes how life has become a roller coaster for his client. "Thanksgiving just passed and he was all alone, he has no family here."

On December 30, 2006, around 10:30AM, Brandy was driving her brand new Range Rover northbound on the 405 Freeway at about 65 mph -- and didn't notice when traffic in front of her slowed down. She then hit
Awatef Aboudijah's car, which veered to the left and was hit by another vehicle before crashing into the center divider. Awatef died at the hospital eight hours later, from massive internal bleeding.

Men and shopping

By: Rootzgirl

Rasta-Girl-Posters.jpgWell, in my last article I spoke about what a hopeless case women are when it comes to dealing with car woes...but if you think they are bad check out men and shopping!

No woman in her right mind will want to send her man to the market...it's an experience she won't soon forget. Living in Jamaica you done know how you have to juggle to make ends meet and going to market is a battle of wits and looking for the best deals.

Feeling sick one week, the husband was left with the job. The same money that would see me coming home with a bag full of goodies saw him heading through the door with a handful of things looking rather pleased with himself too!

"A wha dis?" Can you believe it, the man had the heart to brag how
the lady gave him a sweet deal on the yam and few sick looking bananas after she charge him an arm and a leg for it too!!!

Honestly, if he wasn't so willing and meant well all now I would still be cussing!

The other mistake girl friends don't make and that's to let their husbands accompany them while they go shopping. The smart partners already know what's in store and will find any excuse to duck out of it, even sweetening the pot by giving his woman some extra money!

After the first experience shopping with your man...trust me the woman won't be asking again and the man won't be offering either!

"Mercy he took all the fun out of shopping for me. You could see the look of impatience, sometimes he asked what's wrong with the outfit it looked fine to him...and why I had to try on so many shoes..." one woman bemoaned after having to cut short the fun day of shopping she had planned.

Men, learn something about us...half the time it's not even the buying...it's the thrill of feasting our eyes and then leisurely deciding on what we will be taking home. Don't get it yet?...don't even bother to try it's a woman thing...that's why you don't catch us sitting in front of the tube watching Monday night football!

Oh No, not again R. Kelly!

r_kelly.jpgThat's it, we are convinced that R. Kelly just have a thing for the young ones. Following a story posted on mediatakeout.com where R Kelly's publicist Regina Daniels abruptly quit working with him after 14 years. Regina's husband, music legend George Daniels also cut all ties with the R&B legend.

Initially, it was thought that R Kelly physically assaulted Regina. But it now appears that he did something much worse!!!

According to the website some faithful readers gave them the real 411 on the situation.

Many assumed that Kelly hit or sexual assaulted Regina. But word on the street is the real reason George and Regina quit, is because R Kelly allegedly slept with their 21-year-old daughter [Maxine].

Why is this a problem? She is 21. You say, well the problem is that he has known her since she was 4 years old. She's basically like family to him. From what I've heard he has even referred to her (on many
occasions) as his "lil sis". R Kelly that's just nasty.

And there's more there are whispers that the two may have had a relationship for years. Yup, you do the math...

Is Marco Dean a Davis?

beenie_angel.jpgBeenie Man has not yet collected the results of a paternity test he did recently to determine whether or not he is the biological father of Marco-Dean.

Reports are that the deejay was to collect results today. In a recent television interview, Beenie Man said there is a possibility that the child is not his, and if it turns out that way, D'Angel would have to repay the entire child support money that he had been paying.

In a press release issued yesterday, D'Angel accused Beenie Man of being fully aware of the DNA results at the time when he made these comments on the television interview.

D'Angel Breaks Her Silence!!!!!!!!!!

BeenieMan_D'AngelWedding.jpg

This release is to break the silence on matters concerning my relationship with my husband Moses Davis a.k.a. Beenie Man. In recent times I have restrained myself from discussing the breakdown of our marriage in interviews as I was always of the view that it was a family matter and private.

Over the past five months I have been vilified and maliciously maligned by the lies and comments of Beenie Man and after recent comments made by him in connection with the case in Court I feel I need to speak out and make the public aware of the facts so that this matter will come to an end with the truth.

On the Programme Onstage broadcasted on CVM TV on November 24, 2007, in an interview with Winford Williams the host, Beenie Man made comments which were misleading to the public concerning matters pending in Court.

On the 8th of August 2007 I obtained an interim restraining order against Beenie Man for my personal protection and that of our son Marco Dean. The restraining order which prevented him from having access to Marco Dean was lifted by the Court on the 23rd of August 2007. It was agreed that the arrangements for access of Marco Dean by Beenie Man would be discussed through our respective Attorneys. There was no objection to access on my part as I believed that it was important for Beenie Man to see his son, but arrangements had to be put in place, as there was still a restraining order against him for my protection. Knowing that there was no injunction restricting him from seeing Marco Dean, Beenie Man went on the airwaves and lied to the public that I had an injunction preventing him from seeing his son.

Regarding communications with me concerning Marco Dean, Beenie Man made no attempt to call to enquire about the welfare of his son nor did he provide any maintenance for Marco Dean from he left the matrimonial home in April 2007 until he was ordered by the Court in September to start making interim payments.

When it was expected that his Attorneys would communicate with my Attorney regarding access to see the child, Beenie Man instead came to Court in September and told the Court that he was not sure that Marco Dean was his child and therefore he wanted a DNA Test done. In Court he objected to paying any maintenance for Marco Dean which was being asked for by me and the Judge was lenient to order an interim payment until the DNA Test was done to prove otherwise. Beenie Man therefore in his interviews was irresponsible in misleading the public about the truth of what transpired in Court in September as it related to Marco Dean.

In an interview on Irie FM on November 9, 2007 the day of Marco Dean's Birthday, he again misled the public about my denying him access to his son. The truth is there could be no discussion of access of Marco Dean by Beenie Man when the issue of Marco Dean's paternity was yet to be settled in the Court. How could he speak of Marco Dean being his son and that I was preventing him from seeing his son on his birthday when in September he denied being the father? Furthermore since 23rd August, 2007 to this date his Attorney has made no communication to my Attorney to discuss any arrangements for access to Marco Dean, yet he continues to tell the public that there is an injunction preventing him from seeing Marco Dean.

The Court made it clear that the DNA Test and the result should be confidential until the matter was heard in Court. Instead Beenie Man went ONSTAGE and made it public. The DNA Test was done and at the time of his interview on the Programme Moses Davis a.k.a. Beenie Man was fully aware of the outcome of the testing.

I have at all times maintained my dignity despite the lies and malicious statements made by Beenie Man in the media to malign my character and impede my career. The records of events in Court speak for themselves. I would encourage Beenie Man to desist from making false and misleading statements to the public concerning the Court hearing and our marriage and instead to consult with his Attorneys before opening his mouth. Maybe then they will tell him it is wise to keep silent.

Beenie Man has openly remarked that he is moving on with his life. I wish to move on with my life too and wish he would allow me to do so without him having to vilify me in the public's eyes.

I have always been a faithful wife and a good mother to Marco Dean. I am focussed now on building my career as well as a life for myself and a safe stable loving environment for Marco Dean, ensuring that values of honesty and integrity and respect for persons are instilled in him so that he can grow into a decent respectable young man.

Like parents, like daughter!

bobbi_kristina_brown.jpgSay it ain't so! Yardflex came across the information on mediatakeout.com that Bobbi Kristina daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown could be headed down the same road as her parents!

According to the website the 14-year-old was caught smoking what looked to be illegal stuff. And that's not all. The person who sent the photo claims that Bobbi Kris is on a downward spiral. Tells the family friend, "I'm worried she'll go through what [her parents] went through...Please get the word out so that someone can help her."

Oh no save her please!

Lyrics: "Hate That I Love You" - Rihanna feat. Ne-Yo

rihanna_neyo.jpg1st verse
And I can't stand you
Must everything you do make me wanna smile
Can I not like you for a while - no
But you won't let me
You upset me girl and then you kiss my lips
All of a sudden I forget that I was upset
I can't remember what you did

Pre
Girl I hate it - you know exactly what to do
Still I can't stay mad at you for too long - that's wrong
Girl I hate it - you know exactly how to touch
So I don't fuss and fight no more
Said I despise that I adore you

Chorus
And I hate how much I love you girl
I can't stand how much I need you
And I hate how much I love you girl
But I just cant let you go
Girl I hate that I love you so

2nd verse
And you completely know
The power that you have
The only one that makes me laugh
Sad and it's not fair
Girl you take advantage of the fact that I
Love you beyond the reason why
And it just ain't right

Chorus

Bridge
One of these days maybe your magic won't affect me
And your kiss won't make me weak
But no one in this world knows me the way you know me
So you'll probably always have a spell on me

Chorus

HIV Scare following Doctor's Misuse of needles

aids_logo.jpgNew York state health officials notified 628 former patients of a Nassau County anesthesiologist that they need to seek testing for HIV, Hepatitis and other blood borne diseases, because between 2000 and 2005 the medical practitioner in question reused syringes when injecting patients with more than one drug, New York Times reports.

Investigations into the practice of anesthesiologist Harvey Finkelstein of Plainview, N.Y. began in 2005 after two of his patients contracted hepatitis C. According to the Times, Finkelstein would use a new syringe for each patient. However, Finkelstein told investigators that in 2000 he began using the same syringe to draw medicine from more than one vial when giving a patient more than one type of drug by injection, which caused the potential contamination of multidose vials.

The blood of a patient with one virus could, by backing up through the needle and entering the vials, be transmitted to another person when that vial of medicine was reused.

Investigators in 2005 notified 98 of Finkelstein's patients who had received epidural injections in the three weeks before, during and after his two patients were infected, that they should seek testing for blood borne diseases. Of the 84 who were tested, no other cases of infection were traced to Finkelstein. The state then expanded its investigation to examine records from 2000 to 2005. New York Health Commissioner Richard Daines in a statement released this week said that "the department identified all 628 patients who had received injections between Jan. 1, 2000, and Jan. 15, 2005, after a thorough review of medical records at all sites where this physician practiced" (Vitello/Kershaw, New York Times, 11/16).

Timing of Notification
State health department officials said Thursday that they had planned as early as October 2006 to notify all of Finkelstein's patients that could have been infected with HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, Long Island Newsday reports. However, Finkelstein hired attorneys to avoid submitting all the names of the patients to state and Nassau County officials, and officials then decided against issuing subpoenas. "Initially Dr. Finkelstein was very cooperative," Claudia Hutton, spokesperson for the New York State Department of Health, said, adding, "Then later on he retained an attorney and was not as cooperative." Amon, Long Island Newsday, 11/16).

Editorial
Finkelstein's "lax approach to infection control has raised troubling questions about the adequacy of medical oversight in New York state," a New York Times editorial says. According to the Times, state and county health officials have been "justifiably" criticized for moving too slowly to alert Finkelstein's patients of the possible transmission of HIV and hepatitis.

It "seems inexcusable" that it took the state almost three years to notify people under Finkelstein's care that they should be tested for HIV and hepatitis, the editorial says, adding that it will be necessary to determine if the state's investigatory and disciplinary process is "tilted too much toward protecting doctors rather than any patients who may have been harmed." Plans by state officials to eliminate multidose vials "would provide the surest protection against such contamination and not leave patients at the mercy of a doctor's ignorance or carelessness," the editorial concludes (New York Times, 11/17). It also goes to show that HIV infection is not a "gutter" or moral issue, so the infected should never be judged.

In the News

Asylum chief says 'sorry'

brian_chung2.jpgBrian Chung, owner of the Asylum Night Club is apologizing for the premature end to the club's 10th anniversary celebrations, held at Mas Camp on Saturday.

Proceedings reportedly came to an unscheduled end when a generator in the building went dead.

During an interview today, Mr. Chung explained, "We had two generators at the venue, one for the sound system and the other for the lights. At around 4:00AM Sunday morning the generator for the sound burnt up and we were unable to fix it in time which resulted in the abrupt end to the celebration."

Further, he revealed that Shaggy and Sean Paul who were the surprise acts of the night were unable to perform due to the technical glitch.

On the Charts

edit_shaggy_album2.jpgIn related news, Shaggy's album Intoxication is # 1 on the Billboard Reggae Album Chart. The album is characterized by collaborations with Sizzla Kalonge, Akon, Rik Rok and Nasha.

Meanwhile in the number 3 slot on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart is Ky-Mani Marley with Radio.

I-Wayne's Book of Life is at # 6, Stephen Marley's Mind Control is # 8 and Gangster Life, the Symphony of David Brooks by Mavado is at 9.

ziggy2.jpgByron Lee still a run tings

A free concert held on Sunday in Peacock Park, Coconut Grove, Miami, brought out a massive crowd of around 5000 people who enjoyed the sights and sounds of the Caribbean from 3:00PM until 11:00PM. Byron Lee and The Dragonairs punched out their powerful rhythms that never cease to captivate. As audience members showed their pleasure in vibrant movement and song, Jamaica's leading Calypsonian kept up the rhythmic pulsating beats. "Byron can't done...him sell off," a patron exclaimed.

The days entertainment was provided by a good cross section of cultural greats. The Caribbean Folk Dancers threw down some fancy footwork to wonderful sounds and Jovi gave an excellent presentation, as did the eldest Marley son, Ziggy.

Nikki Z Birthday bash sell off!

nikkiz_posters.jpgNikki Z birthday bash held over the weekend in Portmore at Sugarman's Beach was a real star-studded affair with many of the radio diva friends coming out to celebrate with her.

Attractively decorated, it was a welcomed sight to those who made their way on the beach to enjoy some first class performances and all other attractions that were on offer at the bash.

The bash saw some good performances from the likes of Junior Reid, Deva Bratt, Future Fambo, Erupt, Tifa, Delishus, Esco, Natural Blacks and many others.

The place was ram packed with party goers and the vibes was great.

But it wasn't the big performances – good as they were or the hot outfits that were the hallmark of the night...it was the booes that D'Angel generated!

"Jah know star, da B de brave," one patron was heard commenting in wonder.

Among the others who delivered solid performance until the wee hours of the morning were Bascom X, General B who paid tribute to Nikki Z, Frisco Kid and Martina.

All in all it was a night of fun, frolic and great festivity.

Asylum 'Last Lap' suffered blackout

By: Jaide
Photography By: Milton Raynor

magnum_girls.jpg

Last Saturday night, Asylum Night Club had their 10 year anniversary bash, "...But we should have gone to Nikki Z's Birthday bash instead," was the general consensus amongst some patrons after the whole thing ended behind a power surge and slight crowd disruption.

blade_selector.jpg

Mas Camp was the spot where Asylum hosted this culmination of events, wrapping up a solid week of celebration. Brian "Ribbi" Chung, owner of Asylum, who once ran its now defunct sister club, Cactus, delivered on his promise to provide the very best, but unforeseen circumstances aborted the fun.

Sound System, AreaCode 876, really rocked the Mas Camp revellers in the early hours and party people were well tuned in to his smooth selections to which they responded with loud approval. When Yardflex arrived at about 1:30AM selector Blade was ripping through the crowd with cutting sounds.

itty_patron_floyd.jpg

Interspersed with the handing out of $10,000 cash door prizes to holders of winning tickets, the stage show included amazing comedic talent from Itty, Fancy Cat and Pretty Boy Floyd. The comedians' job was to not only call people up to compete for the B-Mobile phone and gift basket prizes, but also to add an extra hilarious spin to it all by coming up with the (often ridiculous) criteria for the mini competitions.

sky_juice.jpg

Girls with the worst hairstyle, or those whose hair matched their tops, were called out among others. The entire place almost popped down when the worse hairstyle winner who was racing too fast to reach onto the stage, wiped out with a terrible fall. Of course, once everyone realised she was not badly hurt, the whole place "ketch a fire" with laughter.

assasin_baby_cham.jpg

jigsy-king.jpgOther crowd pleasers included, Baby Cham, who had the crowd 'eating out of the palm of his hands' with some of his tunes from the '90's. Bembe Crew's Jigsy King whose lyrical fitness had the crowd 'going' as he chanted down Babylonian principles like 'bleach out face boys', 'tight pants boys' and other ills. Selector Sky Juice was also on hand and he absolutely tore up the place with his early '90s and 2000 selections, coupled with his signature belly rolling dancing that was this time complimented by a true dancehall style split! Assasin worked the stage fairly well until joined by Baby Cham giving a full and well received set.

Although a premature ending came around 4:00AM when there was a power outage and a bit of crowd disorder, patrons with tickets were offered an added chance for fun, as Mas camp tickets were honoured on Sunday night at Asylum Night Club in New Kingston, where the final anniversary fling called 'The Afterparty,' was held.

Mighty Crown takes World Clash 2007

mighty_crown.jpgMighty Crown is the champion! And only just as they took the 2007 title by a narrow margin from Bass Odyssey.

According to reports the two sounds were going at it 'neck and neck' with both boos and forwards!

Ninja Man started off his segment on a high note getting huge forwards as he in his own inimitable style ridiculed Rodigan who came out dressed in a red and white Elvis Presley outfit.

Rodigan was not out for the count though, cause with his change in another outfit came a change in gear as he stepped up the pace and drew some of Ninja's own clash specials on him!

After a really tight and exciting segment, Rodigan got the edge of Ninja as he drew two wicked selections that completely done the place. Even Ninja Man had to concede defeat but not without a warning, Mi a guh stop deejay and tun selector fi kill yuh Rodigan!" It
was however done in a friendly way and patrons didn't take it as a 'real clash'.

edit_beenie_ninja_matterhorn.jpgThe excitement in Amazura went to another level when Beenie Man clashed with Tony Matterhorn. This segment was very exciting as Matterhorn drew some first clased tracing tunes on Beenie Man and pulled out the first big forwards.

As Beenie Man went into his slot, he too got a big response. Both Beenie and Matterhorn continued to go at it with the crowd still not choosing the winner. Some patrons gave the nod to Beenie Man while others said it was Matterhorn and seemed too close to really call.

The Amazura was filled to capacity and fans were pleased with promoters Irish and Chin for giving them their money's worth. Already fans are looking forward to the next big world clash in 2008 where bigger things are anticipated to take place even though 2007
world clash is said to be the 10th and last.

Shirley Ceasar releases her 43rd album; "Still Sweeping Through the City"

By: J. Koni

Shirley_caesar.jpgGospel singing legend, Shirley Caesar has released her 43rd album in her 40th year in music. The album is entitled, "Still Sweeping Through the City," a compilation of 12 of her favorite songs.

The album will feature the classic song, "Hold My Mule," that was released in 1987 and became a number one hit. It stayed on the Billboard Gospel Album Sales Chart for a 110 weeks.

"Hold My Mule was number one for 52 weeks on Billboard," she confesses. "Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could do that again with the new CD? We're just gonna wait and see what God is going to do."

Shirley revealed that she dusted off some of her rarer classics from the 1970s such as "Faded Rose" and a medley of "Peter Don't Be Afraid," "Nobody But You Lord" and "Teach Me Master." Also from that period is the heart-rending "How Many Will Be Remembered?"

From the 1980s, Caesar resurrected "Jesus I Love Calling Your Name", "He'll Do It Again," "Peace in the Midst of the Storm" and "Never."

The Mighty Clouds of Joy's raspy-voiced lead singer, Joe Ligon, rose from his sick bed for the recording of "Never". "Joe had a triple bypass," Caesar announced. "But God touched his body and he was able to sing with me." He traded notes with Caesar on a bit of "Teach Me Master," "God's Got it All Under Control" and "Sweeping Through the City."

The album was recorded last July at the 300-member Mt. Calvary Holy Church that Caesar co-pastors in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Meet Bronx-based gospel artiste Dunamis

By: Joan Wilson

Dunamis_gospel-artiste.jpgNow here is a gospel singer who has truly seen and done it all and is now on fire for Jesus. Through his mistakes he is now imparting the words to others so that they can avoid the same pitfalls.

Neil Hall aka Dunamis is on a mission to reach the world with the transforming message of the Power of God.

Born in Bull Bay, St Andrew he left Jamaica at the age of 10 then got "shipped back" to Jamaica on a one way ticket by my single mom who was out of her elements with his street activities of robbing and possessing and selling guns.

After returning to Jamaica he attended Kingston Technical for three years.

Strange as it might sound inspite of his street life on Sundays he would be in church and in the summer at church camp. He actually made an attempt to serve Christ in 1993 when he accepted the Lord as his
Saviour.

That didn't last he backslid the same year and lived the life of the prodigal son with riotous living as he says.

"My crew and I use to throw big sound parties and running women."

Soon Dunamis started taking an inward look at his life and realized it wasn't as fulfilling as he thought. That's when he asked the Lord to give him another chance to go back to the States and he promised to dedicate his life to Him.

"I called my mom and she said yes I could come back and I kept my promise."

Since giving his life to Christ Dunamis says, "I am a new man and a new creation old things are passed away. I put God first in everything I do we send it up in Prayer. His words declare that he knows the plans he has for us plans to give us HOPE and a FUTURE but we have to seek him believing in our hearts."

The gospel artiste had encouraging words for young people and it's simple, "Give your life to Jesus Christ, when you do so your life will change for the better. Don't get me wrong you will still have struggles but the Lord will be with you every step of the way and trust me Christianity is not boring."

Since his trek into Christendom Dunamis has shared stage with Papa San who is also a brother and mentor to him, Stitchie, Shelly Thunder, The Grace Thrillers and Carlene Davis just to name a few.

Sunshine Girls Retain Bronze Medal

By: Devon Anderson and Dwight Fraser

edit_sunshine_girls.jpgJamaican netballers "The Sunshine Girls" performed creditably at the just concluded world netball championships when they maintained their third place ranking by defeating England in a tight finish 53-52.

Earlier, in the tournament the girls won their zone to qualify for the semi-final with the big three Austrailia, New Zealand and England.

However, despite playing competitively against New Zealand in the semi-final The Sunshine Girls could not withstand the strong challenge from that country's "Silver Ferns" and succumbed to a 59-49 defeat.

The Connie Francis trained team then showed their mettle by defeating England to win the bronze.

Stand out goal shooter Romelda Aitken was voted the best new talent and Connie Francis the best upcoming coach. Yardflex sends hearty congratulations to the administrative staff and the team.

Meanwhile, Australia went on to defeat defending champions New Zealand for the gold.

Diabetes Part II...test yourself

diabetes_logo_slogan.jpgThe Canadian Diabetes Association suggests those at high risk for getting diabetes get tested at least every three years. If you answer yes to any of the questions below you are considered to be at high risk for type 2 diabetes:

● Have you had gestational diabetes?
● Does an immediate family member have type 2 diabetes?
● Are you overweight?
● Are you over 40?
● Do you have high blood pressure?
● Are you of aboriginal, Hispanic, Asian or African decent?

You should also watch for common signs and symptoms of diabetes, including:

● Unusual thirst
● Frequent urination
● Weight change
● Extreme fatigue or lack of energy
● Blurred vision
● Frequent or recurring infections
● Cuts and bruises that are slow to heal
● Tingling or numbness in your hands or feet

If you experience any of these symptoms for a period of time, don't take them lightly. People with diabetes can live full, active and healthy lives. The earlier a diagnosis is made the better the odds of avoiding complications and preventing the disease's progression.

"Him just a go round and a have up dis bag a pickney and di mother dem haffi a come to wi fi serve summons fi get him fi mind dem," the cop ranted.

But what gets to the security personnel is the fact that this same personality can be heard on the air hitting out at men who don't mind their children.

Good start on the Reggae road to South Africa

By: Devon Anderson and Dwight Fraser

reggae_boyz.jpgThe Jamaican Football team "The Reggae Boyz" made a successful return to the National Stadium - "The Office," when they won their two international friendlies against El Salvador and Guatemala under the new Jamaica Football Federation Administration with Captain Horace Burrell at the helm.

In the first game on Sunday November 18 against El Salvador the Theodore Whitmore coached team won 3-nil in an encouraging but not overwhelming performance by the Boyz. This all took place under the watchful eyes of approximately18,000 spectators clad in their gold, green and black our traditional "Yard" colours.

On this occasion the team was captained by Ricardo "Bibby" Gardner who plies his trade in the English Premier League for Bolton Wanderers. The goal scorers were Captain Gardner and Rudolph Austin.

In the second encounter on Wednesday November 21 against Guatemala, the Reggae Boyz kept their composure and eeked out a comprehensive 2-nil victory, under soggy conditions in front of a similar size crowd.

However this time the team was captained by goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts as Ricardo Gardner had to return to England due to contractual agreement with his club.

Ricardo "Willy boo" Fuller kicked the goal scoring door wide open when he chipped the ball over the head of an advancing Luis Molina in goal, while Omar Daley's had a surging run down the middle after picking up a loose ball, and struck a ferocious ground shot that beat Molina in the right hand side of his goal .

Jamaica's rookie coach Theodore Whitmore who played for the Reggae Boyz on the journey to France in '98 was elated to have been given the opportunity by administration to be the man in charge of the squad for these two international friendlies. He dedicated the victories to former team mates now deceased Stephen "Shorty" Malcolm and Peter "Jair" Cargill.

Live Wyya Sacked

By: Joseph Cunningham

live_wyya.jpgJust months after being named the official backing band for Jah Cure, Live Wyya has been fired.

Reports are that band members were presented with a letter that suggested their services were no longer required, shortly after returning from a performance in The Bahamas with the singer.

"This is very shocking," says Earl Edwards, the band leader. He added, "In the letter it was suggested that we were fired on the grounds of having a minor in our hotel room. This is untrue."

Further, he revealed that their hotel room in the Bahamas was searched by police who suspected that they had marijuana and a gun. He said despite not having a warrant, the hotel room was searched and nothing was found. Karl said that he is appalled by the actions of Jah Cure and his management.

Efforts to contact Delmar Drummond, C.E.O of Danger Zone and Jah Cure's manager, were unsuccessful.

Celebrate as "Exodus" Turns 30

By: Janice Dayle

bob_marley_exodus.jpgThirty years ago the album, "Exodus" was released by Island Records and this masterpiece from Bob Marley and The Wailers has been lauded by many and even labeled, "the album of the 20th century," by Time Magazine.

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of this album's release Island Records has released Exclusive Exodus Music and Memorabilia that includes a Special Edition CD/DVD combo; "Live At The Rainbow Concert," and a new hardback book. College tours of the screening of, "Live At The Rainbow," will also ensue across the US. Exodus was released on Friday June 3, 1977 while Marley was in a self imposed exile.

In December, 1976 Bob Marley, his wife and manager suffered gunshot wounds after an assassination attempt at their Hope Road residence. Injured and bandaged Bob Marley and his wife joined the rest of The Wailers at a scheduled concert in Kingston shortly after the attack, performing - despite the lurking danger.

Following that political concert, Bob Marley left Jamaica for the UK; and with The Wailers went on to produce the album "Exodus." It was a time when the reggae loving world's appetite for Bob Marley and The Wailers was becoming insatiable with Exodus actually catching Marley at his most introspective, rebellious and creative period. His creative maturity resulted in heightened global recognition; and then later on in that same year a deadly cancer diagnosis became the beginning of Bob’s physical end.

Recently becoming historical with a limited edition version of the album being released on USB Memory Stick this year (at www.bobmarley.com), "Exodus" is the first artist-specific album to be released using this groundbreaking format and Marley is the first major label catalog artist to have music available via this new technology.

Hot Ne-Yo dropped from R. Kelly tour

By: J. Koni

neyo_r' kelly.jpgNe-Yo has been dropped from R.Kelly's Double Up tour, and the official reason is that there is a contractual dispute. However, a representative from Ne-Yo's camp believes R.Kelly is afraid of the competition! "R.Kelly fired the singer because he brought too much heat for him to compete against."

"He's written hit songs for Beyonce ("Irreplaceable") and Rihanna ("Unfaithful"); spending a combined 19 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100," Ne-Yo's business partner and manager, Tango, said in a statement. "He's written songs slated to be on Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Lionel Richie, and Enrique Iglesias' new albums. The fans were really feeling his performances. He's good; maybe he's too good – that's the problem."

Giving his opinion, Ne-Yo added: "I don't understand their actions because I was rehearsing, doing media, promoting the tour, and performing. In my opinion, I was doing everything possible to make the tour a success. I love being on stage in front of fans because of the immediate feedback you get. You know right away if they are feeling you; and they were really feeling our show. To my fans and ticket holders – I apologize if you are disappointed," he said.

Allan Mayer, R. Kelly's representative declared that the singer had nothing to do with Ne-Yo's dismissal: "Ne-Yo's departure from the Double Up tour was the result of a contractual issue between him and the tour promoter. R. Kelly had nothing to do with it."

Macka implicated after shooting incident

By: Joseph Cunningham

macka_diamond_2.jpgMacka Diamond and her management are disgruntled at reports that insinuate she may have been involved in a shooting incident at the home of her former publicist, Ray Alexander.

Yardflex learnt that on Tuesday night unidentified persons alighted from a vehicle outside the gate of Mr. Alexander's home and aimed gunshots towards the house. A number of bullet holes bare witness of the attack.

Director of marketing Lisa Larmond, of Macka Diamond's company, DIAMOND DISTRICT J.A., says the deejay was taken aback when she heard of the insinuations. She adds that for Macka Diamond to be involved is impossible as she is busy doing her music videos, shows, tours and book promotion.

However, Ray claims that a member of the entertainment fraternity is directly or indirectly involved in the shooting. The CEO of Khool Booking Agency is reported to have given the Bridgeport police the name of someone he suspects. He adds that he was at home with his girlfriend when the shots were fired into his house. He says one bullet went into the bedroom wall while the other shattered the bedroom window before hitting the bedroom closet. The Bridgeport police are investigating.

Kanye comes clean about chart battle

50_and_kanye.jpgSeems as if our local DJs are not the only one enjoying popularity after their so-called feud. According to a story posted on another website, the rapper told all in the December issue of GQ.

Kanye West has revealed his chart battle with rap rival 50 Cent was a publicity stunt he dreamed up to sell records. The pair went head to head in September (07) when both of their albums were released on the same day. West won after a frenzied media battle he now claims he created.

The multi-platinum hit maker comes clean to GQ (December '07 issue) magazine, stating, "It was a complete publicity stunt. It was my idea. I knew it was going to take off as soon as we were going to come out on the same date. Think about it - you got the two biggest sh*t-talkers in rap history. There's no-one in rap history known for talking more shit than me and 50. That's something I will stand on." He adds of 50 Cent's vow to retire if he lost the battle: "Oh man, he sold so many more records by saying that. Man, 50 is really one of my favorite rappers, too. I almost feel bad (about beating him)." Although, West hammered 50 cent with sales in the U.S., it was 50 cent who sold more albums worldwide than his play-play rival.

Also in the cover story, West, who GQ magazine has named as one of their 2007 Men of the Year, does not discuss the sudden tragic passing of his mother Donda in the article, but he does speak on his impending
marriage to designer Alexis Phifer. "I'm just going to go and get married — I'm not going to make a big deal out of it. It's not to prove anything to anyone — it's for me, for stability in my life, and I'm so happy that I found someone that I really love, that challenges me, that keeps my life interesting, that's just as crazy as I am."

"Bembe"...new name for Thursday

By: Kaylia Williams & Janice Dayle
Photos By: Kaylia Williams

BembeSquad.jpg

Bembe Thursday started October 12th last year and it has evolved into a dancehall ritual held at Weekenz every Thursday. The regular steamy dancehall session was initiated by the group Bembe Squad, alongside Weekenz manager. Comprised of a group of top selectors, The Bembe Squad is: Richie Feelings, Tony Matterhorn, Jigsy, Penny Bling, Rolexx, Razz and Biggy.

The name Bembe originated with group member Richie Feelings, who said, "Bembe is an outstanding marble that is big and that's why I chose the name cause out of the twenty four marbles that come in the pack the Bembe marble is the biggest." Biggy a member of the group was the one who came up with Bembe Thursday.

Razz explained that the owner of Weekenz approached the group about a dancehall night the club was planning to start. Richie asked the group what they should call the sessions and Biggy came up with Bembe Thursdays. Richie feelings said, "Mi like it, it different it ago work!"

Bembe Squad said they never thought that Bembe Thursdays would have escalated with such a huge mix of both uptown and downtown patrons with many tourists coming to witness and enjoy the famous Thursday night jam for themselves. Bembe has also expanded and can be found on foreign shores, since the squad was invited to Japan for a Bembe Thursday and they also went to New York for a stint at Club Amazura with selector Tony Matterhorn and dancer Ding Dong this past summer.

Having become one of the most popular and well attended dances in Kingston, Bembe proudly celebrated its 1st anniversary on Thursday October 18. Postponed initially due to bad weather conditions, the celebration went on with the Bembe Squad and fans enjoying themselves as always with the likes of artistes such as Buju Banton, Mavado, Bounti Killer, New Kidz and Bugle.

50 Cent, Ciara to spend Thanksgiving together

50_ciara.jpgBusted! Rapper 50 Cent and Ciara's quality time plan has been discovered. According to Mediatakeout.com Ciara is traveling across Eastern Europe with 50 Cent as he tours. And word is, she's not traveling as a performer - but as 50's companion.

And there's more. Ciara and 50 are so serious, that she's spending Thanksgiving with him - and not with her family in Atlanta.

Don't believe us, you should see the photo showing Ciara in Brastislava outside 50 Cent's hotel (with 50's tour manager). Why else would she be in Slovakia - it ain't exactly a tourist spot...

Publicist's house shot up

gunshootholes_in_house.jpgEntertainment publicist Ray Alexander received the shock of his life last night when unknown assailants shot up his house.

When Yardflex spoke with Alexander he was still shaken up as he fired, "it happened around 8:45 last night. I heard the sound of gunfire but I couldn't believe the attack was on me. My first thought was, I have not done anyone anything, so who would want to hurt me?" he explained.

According to Alexander he later learned that the car drove about 200 meters from his home, then two men got out, one stocky and another slim built, they walked up to the gateway pushed the gun through the gate and fired several shots towards the bedroom area.

The CEO of Khool International said he came to the full realization that he was the target when he looked through the window and saw crowd gathering at his gate. When he went to investigate it was then they told him what happened.

The matter has since been reported to the Bridgeport Police. The suspect is believed to be someone from the entertainment industry.

Wayne Marshall taking it to another level

Wayne_marshall.jpgWayne Marshall, one of the hard working members of the Alliance is currently effectively burning candles at both ends as he perfects not only his second solo album but also an upcoming Alliance release with Bounty Killer, Mavado, Busy Signal and Bling Dawg.

After dominating airwaves with the blazing sounds of his 2007 hits, "Cocky," "Astronaut," "Who & Dem," "Smoking" and his most recent release, "Potholes," Marshall is on a roll that is keeping him at the top.

Both albums are slated for a 2008 release, however the first single off of his yet to be titled solo effort is already on heavy rotation at radio stations. The song, "Keeping it Gangsta," will undoubtedly thrust this solo effort into higher heights. Expected to initiate the rise of a new more focused Marshall, the album is described as being filled with more potent crossover tracks that will help boost the hit-maker's career.

Marshall took a few moments from his busy schedule to explain what's new for him. "Well I'm working in studios with Steven McGregor, Jam Two, Delly Ranks and Left Side & Esco as well...although working with various producers right now...the album is the thing that's number one on the agenda. We working on tracks with Sean Paul right now in the studio for my album that's going to be hot, but it's not finished yet. The same thing for Junior Gong me and him have two prospective collaborations in the works which I'm looking forward to, me and Tessanne Chin is going to be rocking on the album as well plus me and Chino did some hot stuff recently," Marshall stated.

Fans can hook themselves up with the sneak preview single and carry on anticipating the eventual drop of Marshall's new solo album next year.

New Look to Jamaica Festival 2k 8

By: Joseph Cunningham

edit_jamaica_flag_large.jpg

In an effort to increase the number of persons entering Jamaica Festival 2008, the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), made several changes to the previously existing syllabus.

This will include the expansion of eligibility rules, which will allow more people to enter the various categories of competition, increasing the probability of more items making it to the National Finals.

The new rules of the competition will now allow for highest-scoring gold medalist in each age class and category at the parish level to be eligible for recommendation to the Nationals, and other finals.

In an effort to sensitize entrants about the new rules, which will come into effect in June 2008, the JCDC will be hosting a series of workshop seminars across the island. The workshops will target all teachers and leaders in the areas of music, drama, speech, dance and traditional folk forms.

The JCDC will also provide free copies of the new syllabus. "The commission wants to encourage more persons to enter - persons who would have never thought to enter - to participate in this year's competition," Miss Renee Robinson, Director of Programmes at the JCDC, said.

She added that the changes in the programme are designed to move the Performing Arts festival from being primarily dominated by school groups and further encompass community and individual participation.

Reggae Explosion 2007

By Olimatta Taal

sizzla.jpg

Despite a shoot out at inside a local Fort Lauderdale Club a few weeks ago, Reggae Explosion 2007 held at Gold Coast Skating Rink still brought out loyal fans to a show organized by Drop Di Bass Records, Red Square Productions, and Kalonji Records. Early juggling began with music from Bambino Sound Family, Swatch International, D-Nice, Daniel, and Super Sound.

mr.peppa2.jpg

The show began with a magnificent and energetic performance by the original dancehall king, Yellow Man. He deejayed a number of hit tunes like I'm getting Married, BlueBerry Hill, Zunguzung, and tribute song to orphan children with a similar experience. He performed with Sagittarius Band bringing live music that had the club rocking.

calibe.jpg

Just when the crowd thought they had enough, out came female artist Calibe, showing that she could hold it down just as well as everyone else with her melodic background singers delivering her single’s Energy and Take Over. She bridged her set with music that was inspirational to sexy and illuminated it even more when she brought out some dancers to accompany her on stage.

mad_anju.jpg

An entourage of performers representing the Red Square Camp kept the audience on their toes which included performances by Greg Hines, Mad Anju, Mr. Peppa, and Spragga Benz. Greg Hines had the audience eating out the palm of his hands with War Alone and other hits. Stop Mi If You Can and Fatty was a favorite for the fans of Mad Anju. Mr. Peppa had the people wanting more as he sang When Last, Talk, and Gangsta Guerilla. However, it was Spragga Benz who had the ladies feeling good with his new song Take It Slow. He also performed a number of hits like Jack It Up and Wi Nuh Like.

spragga.jpg

The night was moving quickly but the crowd began to get antsy as Sizzla Kalonji had not taken the stage yet. You could hear fans anticipating his performance as they screamed his name which could be heard clearly from behind the stage, "Sizzla, Sizzla, We want Sizzla." Backed by the Firehouse Band, he delivered a prolific set with fans craving more as he sang Get To The Point, Thank You Mama, Black Women & Child, Take Myself Away and other songs from his catalogue of over 1000 songs.

Shaggy shares "Intoxication" with Florida fans

By: Janice Dayle

shaggy.jpgLike a tattoo, Shaggy has marked the world with his infectious sound and Mr. 'Order of Distinction' continues in that vein with his current promotional tour for "Intoxication," the album that is loaded with soulful and driving rhythms.

On November 16 Shaggy brought his upbeat new disc with its dancehall rocking fusions that blend well with the Shaggy pop style to Florida's Saw Grass Mills Mall. FYE Music hosted this southern USA unveiling of "Intoxication," and Shaggy demonstrated why he is indeed one of Jamaica's most celebrated cultural figures.

Accompanied by Rik Rok, Shaggy hung out with his fans; and he not only signed CDs but was also well-disposed to all requests for photo opportunities. One fan commended Shaggy's warmth that was brought more to light, she said, as she observed his genuine interaction with a disabled young fan.

edit_shaggy_album.jpg

"Intoxication" and its radio rockers mixture of raunchy driving rhythms and hooking collaborations with artistes like Sizzla and Rik Rok, is surely a vehicle for songs that will soon hit charts worldwide.

By: J. Koni

jillcscot_dianaross.jpgTalented American R&B, soul and jazz singer Jill Scott has been booked to perform at the 2008 Air Jamaica Jazz And Blues Festival.

Jill Scott grew up in north Philadelphia, reading her own poetry. She was heard by a drummer in the band, Roots, who invited her to join their band in studio. The result was a co-composition, "You Got Me," that became a Top 40 pop hit in 1999.

Subsequently, she collaborated with Eric Benet, Will Smith and Common, and broadened her performing experience by touring Canada in a production of the Broadway musical Rent.

Signed to Steve McKeever's newly formed Hidden Beach label, Jill released her debut album, "Who Is Jill Scott." Words and Sounds Vol. 1, in July 2000. "Experience: Jill Scott 826" appeared the following summer and it came hot on the heels of the "A Long Walk" single.

Scott's star-power soared over the next year, eventually earning her a Grammy nomination in early 2003 for Best Female Vocal Performance for "A Long Walk." "Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds, Vol. 2" and "The Real Thing: Words and Sounds, Vol. 3" followed in 2004 and 2007, respectively. A compilation containing several of her most notable guest appearances, titled "Collaborations," was also released in 2007

Sanchez gives hope to the youth of Standpipe

sanchez.jpgReggae singer Sanchez is definitely on a mission. And it is one that could very well be called Project Standpipe. It's all about the empowerment of the youth through music, and many persons who are close to the singer have expressed the view that this project is now Sanchez' guiding light.

Always in demand to do recordings and stage shows around the world, Sanchez recently took a little time to really chill out in the section of Liguanea, known as Standpipe. While there, he convene an informal musical conference with the youth of the area, and, as expected, the feedback was excellent. They all agreed that music was an important influence and they would welcome the opportunity to get involved with any musical project spearheaded by Sanchez.

For starters, weekly talent shows were staged to unearth the potential rising stars. The talent that emerged from the community was awesome and the youth were so grateful for the opportunity that they came
out in their numbers to audition.

"When I realized that there was so much talent here, I just decided to chill and put the effort into building a studio right here in the community and play my part in uplifting the youth," Sanchez said in an
interview with Yardflex.

And so Project Standpipe was born, thus giving hope to youth who would perhaps otherwise have joined gun-toting gangs to wreak havoc on the society.

The singer bemoaned the fact that crime statistics indicate that many of the murders and other heinous crime that are being committed are done by young boys.

"Bwoy, as a father (with two sons) I feel that something has to be done to save these youngsters. I know that exposing them to music giving them something to do, will keep them focused and uplifted. All of them won't be singers and deejays, but they can be engineers, producers and song-writers and from what I see, they have the talent to do it. These youngsters, if given a chance, can really make
something positive out of their lives and turn away from guns and drugs," Sanchez said passionately.

Declaring that the gun culture has already destroyed the lives of too many youths, Sanchez pointed out that Project Standpipe has impacted on his life in a positive way and has caused him to do a serious
reality check.

"This is about the youngsters, but in another sense it is also about Sanchez. Working with these youths have made me a better person, more aware of my responsibilities and the fact that they are looking to me as an example and therefore I have to be conscious and set the right example," the singer, christened Kevin Jackson, said soberly.

Among the artistes now recording on Sanchez' Sanmonik label are Chaos, Jah Vince, Stream, Hotta Man and the Crew and Genius. For them, this is the opportunity of a lifetime and they all expressed their gratitude to the singer who they all declare "is like a Faada."

Kids & HIV/AIDS; Don't Hate – EDUCATE

jenna.jpgJenna Bush, daughter of the president of the United States, who has written a book chronicling the life of a young Latin American girl born HIV positive; also spoke briefly about the discrimination facing children living with HIV/AIDS in Jamaica. Inspired to write the book, entitled "Anna's Story; A Journey of Hope," following a UNICEF internship in Latin America and the Caribbean, it was the Jamaican response to HIV that seemed harshest, in all of the young Bush’s analogies.

Bush, 25, spoke of HIV positive children in Jamaica who told her they would never disclose their HIV status to anyone in their neighbourhood. The children's reason was a very real fear that someone in their village would stone them to death, she said. This speaks to the single most crippling aspect of HIV/AIDS; that is Stigma and Discrimination.

Talking about children with HIV/AIDS Jenna's book documents the life stories of the kids she encountered during her study/work experience. At a book signing session recently Jenna encouraged people to become mentors, teachers, tutors and volunteers for affected children in need of help and to educate themselves about the crucial issues facing children like, HIV/AIDS, sexual abuse and other like issues, the Tampa Tribune reported.

Intended to inspire and not depress, Jenna spoke of first encounter with Anna, who was like a typical American teen. Jenna told the Tribune, "I ignorantly thought she [Anna] would be scared and sad and would have trust issues. I didn't know she'd already gotten the help she needed and had talked about her problems. By the time I met her, she was incredibly positive. She said, 'This is the way God created my life. What is the point in being sad?"

Anna was not only HIV positive at birth, she was also sexually abused and became pregnant at age 16. Bush mentioned thinking, Ana would never have overcome the barriers in her life had it not been for real friends, mentors, educators and spiritual leaders.

Women and cars

By Rootzgirl

Rasta-Girl-Posters.jpgFor the next couple of articles I will be exploring women and men's responses to any given situation. Both have their strong points and their weak points and that's what drives each other crazy.

Now having said that I will go into a topic that certainly doesn't leave most of us women in a favourable light. And that's how we deal with car ownership.

It's a drama observing three quarters of my friends when they have a puncture to deal with...honestly they don't have a clue about changing tires!

One of my home girls shamelessly confessed that "I just come out of the car, 'panker around' and sure enough a kind Samaritan stop to help."

Another of my home girl said she came out of the car, looked absolutely helpless and a guy stopped and "sorted her out!"

For myself now the personal grief comes in trying to buy car parts. Oftentimes you give the make and year of the car and the sales person throws a question at you like "what size engine is it, what kind of battery does it use?" Poor me, I thought battery was battery!

The classic came one day when the AC in the car was not working, and having just topped up on the gas in the tank went to an expert to check out the problem with the AC. He made a comment to the effect, "maybe it wants gas" Now bright, bright me, promptly answered, "No I just filled up the tank!"

I knew something was wrong when I saw the look that came across the guy's face – you know like he was trying to stop himself from collapsing. Of course I must give him credit as he patiently explained that he meant the AC wants gas...like how was I supposed to know that AC uses gas.

Yeah I know you guys are cracking up and I am not ashamed to say that it is a challenge to be a car owner as that aspect doesn't come natural to us.

Home girls you know I am telling the truth, we love to profile in a good car, but the headache of servicing, changing flats and sourcing parts...well we can well do without that.

Peace out until next time when I pick on the guys. Oh I hope you realize I can actually write about other things than sex!

Beenie, Barbee to walk red carpet at AMA

keys_beenie_barbee.jpg

When the celebrities walk the red carpet to attend the America Music Awards on Sunday in California Beenie Man and Barbee will be among them.

Yardflex had a chat with the sultry singer and she was very excited about it.

"It's cool and I feel honoured going to the awards with her," Barbee gushed.

But that's not all the two will have their moment in the spotlight also as they have remixed Alicia Keys' red hot lead single "No One" from her just released album "As I Am."

The remix all came about because one of Alicia Keys' producers approached Barbee about the project and from what we hear of the single it is destined to be just as popular as its predecessor.

At Alicia Key's "As I Am" album launch held recently in New York, the remix of the lead single "No One" was played and Barbee could not be more pleased at the response. "It was crazy vibes at the party...they all loved it."

Diabetes threatens global health like: HIV/AIDS Tuberculosis and Malaria says UN

By: Elizabeth Smith

diabetes_logo_slogan.jpgYesterday, November 14, was World Diabetes Day and it marked the first time that this monumental vehicle of "Diabetes Awareness," travelled across our globe - spurring on efforts of prevention as well as heightening perceptions on what can be done to control the disease; preventing or delaying life threatening complications.

Diabetes currently affects 246 million people globally. This historical day was especially for all of them and the many millions more at risk,

On this first United Nations (UN) observed World Diabetes Day, Diabetes communities got together to celebrate the long awaited existence of a day that recognises the severe risks posed by Diabetes and urged understanding of the disease overall.

The result of a UN landmark resolution of December 2006, November 14 has become a United Nations observed day. Marking the date of Frederick Banting's birthday who along with Charles Best first came up with the notion of insulin in 1921, November 14 will bolster a major global awareness campaign from now on.

The resolution recognized that diabetes presents as great a threat to global health as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

Introduced by International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization (WHO), the idea to have a day focusing on Diabetes came as a response to concern over increased numbers of people living with the disease around the world

Many activities took place to mark this day globally. In New York, the IDF's activities included the formation of a human blue circle – the symbol for Diabetes - on the grounds of the UN, a march and a Diabetes education rally that included musical performances and celebrity appearances. 'Baba Roots' will give you energy for the new Rush Hour Night Club

By: Joseph Cunningham

baba_roots.jpgIn a rush, the drink has become a huge favourite, and, in a rush, William "Baba Roots" Wilberforce Webb has become one of Jamaica's most successful entrepreneurs.

Yes! He is the man behind what is arguably the most popular herbal energy drink in Jamaica – Baba Roots - and its popularity is soaring throughout the wider Caribbean and the world. As a result, it is the most requested drink consumed by dancehall's world renowned artistes, before they ascend the stage.

Baba Roots told Yardflex that the drink increases sexual energy and alertness as well!

It is marketed in Jamaica as a home-grown and natural alternative to Red Bull and is considered an ital food product. The drink has been mentioned in several songs including "Stand Firm" by Bounty Killer.

A perpetual entrepreneur, Baba has come up with something new and exciting; the "Rush Hour Night Club" located on Pines Plaza, Junction, St. Elizabeth. The club opened last Saturday night with guest appearances from Ninja Man and Bling Dawg. Comparable to many top class night spots, Rush Hour Night Club could be mistaken for a major club in any of the world's metropolitan centres. It is fully air-conditioned and cozy; with a lounge area covered in leather, a huge dancing area, psychedelic lights and a nice stage. There is also a gazebo provided for persons who do not wish to party at the bar.

Rush Hour Night Club will be opened from Thursday through to Sunday of each week. Thursdays will be characterized by free admission for ladies on "Ladies Night." Friday nights will be "Afterwork Jam," Saturdays, "Dancehall Night" and Sundays will be "Oldies Night."

Baba expressed appreciation for the positive response he has received from Jamaicans toward his herbal drink, and proceeded to reveal to Yardflex a number of added advancements to the same. "I have established a state of the art industrial facility in Darliston, Westmoreland, and my birthplace. That is where the drink is manufactured." He also revealed plans to construct a water filter system. "When that is completed strictly chlorine free water will be used to mix the Baba Roots herbal drink," he affirmed.

After living in the United States of America (USA) for 18 years, he was deported for selling marijuana. Now Baba says his life and success are a living testament to the determination he possesses. Since his crime was not considered to be "grave criminality," Baba says there was no disgrace attached to the deportation order placed on him. Instead he was sent back to Jamaica with his travel documents and his integrity. He told Yardflex, "I want you to mention the deportation information, because it will give hope to others that with a strong desire for a better life success is achievable."

Today the "drink" Baba has concocted is very popular among the Caribbean Diaspora in the USA.

The Reggae Boy's Train rolls again...

By: Devon Anderson and Dwight Fraser

reggae_boyz.jpgJamaica's senior Reggae Boys will entertain El-Salvador and Guatemala at The Office this Sunday, November 18. Then on Wednesday the 21st the teams will come together once again to participate in international friendlies, arranged by the new Jamaican Football Federation (JFF) President Captain Horace Burrell.

Burrell chose former Reggae Boy Theodore Whitmore, who captained his team at the 1998 World Cup in France, to be the interim coach for these two games with Bradly Stewart holding down the post of assistant.

However it has been said in the media and many a football circle that the president's intention is to re-introduce Brazilian Rene Simoes, the coach who took Jamaica's Reggae Boys to World Cup in '98, as the one who will take over at the helm.

Since his new appointment as head of JFF administration Captain Burrell has sacked Velibor Bora' Mulutinovic as National Technical Director citing a breach of contract. Mulutinovic, whose appointment was under the previous administration with a four year deal - said to be worth one million US dollars per annum, had completed the first year of the contract at the time of his dismissal.

The Reggae Boys currently rank 103 on the latest Coca Cola/FIFA ranking and they are now expected to demonstrate their ascendancy in the quest to be that respectable and credible Caribbean opponent they once were.

The Jamaican fans are hungry for 'The Boys' who last played at The Office on July 2nd, in a one nil loss to Chile.

The Tappa Whitmore line up should include the overseas based Khari Stephenson, Ricardo 'Bibby' Gardner, Luton Shelton, Ricardo 'Willy Boo' Fuller, Damion 'Stew Peas' Stewart, Ian 'Pepe' Goodison and Jermaine 'Teddy' Johnson along with scores of local players.

These two games form part of the push towards preparing to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, in South Africa.

Flex to settle the score at Sting

flex_deva.jpgIt will be a lyrical showdown at this year's staging of Sting with one of the wickedest lyricists in the Alliance camp, Flex going at Deva Brat from The Portmore Empire.

The showdown comes in response to the endless name calling by Deva Brat and now Flex is hoping to end it all on stage.

Deva Brat has recorded a new track in which he calls up Flex's name.

Yardflex spoke to Flex, questioning him about the current tension between himself and Deva Brat. He said, "It is time fi a man jus stop di name calling like seh him wear Stay-free. If him want a war him mus just say that!"

Flex added that he is convinced that Deva Brat has been calling names in order to get attention. "A buss some bwoy waan buss and cyaan buss. It look like seh some bwoy suh desperate dat him wi even mek man [sex] him," Flex continued.

Flex stated that his career is above a "tiff" onstage, however, he will not allow himself to be disrespected without dealing with the issue. "Mi ready fi anything at Sting," he said.

"Mi nah do no song a call up people name," says Flex. "A no dessoh mi ting deh. But him fi face me a Sting and mek we see who badda."

Flex's management team are now trying to see if they can make the showdown happen. So far they have made their intention clear to Sting organizers who in turn are negotiating with Deva to see if he can defend himself.

The two previously had an on-stage lyrical skirmish at the popular weekly session Bembe Thursdays.

Flex, who has been traveling extensively with Mavado currently has a range of tunes getting airplay, with "No Gal" on DJ Wayne's Operation Torpedo riddim leading the pack.

Kanye West's mom's death leaves more questions than answers

west_adams.jpgMedia reports have surfaced that Kanye West's mom may have fallen victim to a surgeon with a shady past. According to tmz.com the tummy tuck and breast reduction performed on her by Dr. Jan Adams took eight hours, which is twice as long as such a procedure warrants.

According to TMZ just weeks before Donda West died, a plastic surgeon refused to perform procedures on her because of a health condition that could have led to a heart attack.

If only Donda had listened to the voice of wisdom that came to her in the form of a Beverly Hills physician, TMZ reports. Dr. Andre Aboolian, reportedly refused to perform the surgery for her until she was cleared by an internist who he recommended. West never went for that clearance and changed doctors completely.

An autopsy on Dr. West is scheduled to be completed by Wednesday. The Los Angeles Coroner stated Monday that Donda West, 58, died Saturday because of "possible complications due to surgery."

According to MediaTakeOut.com the doctor who performed the cosmetic surgery on Kanye West's mother has been in trouble before. Documents obtained by them show that Dr. Jan Adams had a disciplinary action filed against him earlier this year. It also shows that Dr Adams paid close to $500,000 in malpractice judgments against him.

There are also questions surrounding the doctor being certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgeon.

Other doctors from the Centinela Hospital where West was rushed to the emergency room Saturday night, reported that they believe the excessive amount of time it took to perform the procedure suggests either something went wrong during the operation or the doctor was just too inexperienced.

Gay Jamaican Secures Asylum in US

GayMaleLogo.jpgVenn Messam, a gay Jamaican man who sought asylum in the United States on the grounds that he feared persecution – because of his sexual orientation - if forced to return to Jamaica, was granted asylum by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on November 8, 2007.

Messam enlisted assistance from students at Columbia Law School's Sexuality and Gender Law Clinic and since September of last year, four students provided legal assistance in preparing their client's application for asylum. Simrin Parmar '08, Jennifer Stark '09, Jonathan Lieberman '08, and Eileen Plaza '09 spent many months conducting interviews, drafting affidavits, researching country conditions, filling out necessary forms, accompanying their client to the New York asylum office, and providing assistance during his interview.

Columbia Law School's report on this breakthrough for Messam, speaks of the climate in Jamaica for homosexuals, bisexuals and trans-gendered (GLBT) people, as being shrouded in danger that gets worse daily. Citing incidents specific to Messam, such as his own declaration that, "My life in Jamaica was constantly in danger, with angry mobs carrying machetes, stones, knives, and guns, threatening to kill me because I am gay," as well as uncovering a rampant rumour that hostile groups in Jamaica are plotting the social cleansing of hundreds of gay people by year's end, the report categorises Jamaica as being 'far from a tropical paradise.'

"Within just the last month, gay Jamaicans have been murdered and the government has not intervened...this Caribbean nation continues to imprison and kill its gay citizens with relative impunity," the report from Columbia Law School added.

Reportedly relieved at this life saving event, Messam stated, "I am grateful to the United States government for saving my life."

He spoke of the lack of public protection for him in Jamaica during times of fear and dire need – saying, "When I tried to contact the police for help, the police instead threatened to arrest me and told me to leave the country if I wanted to stay safe."

"This asylum grant highlights the particularly severe dangers facing gay Jamaicans. From election campaigns that use songs which promote burning and killing gay people to police support for violent, anti-gay mobs, the Jamaican government is actively menacing and endangering its gay citizens," said Professor Suzanne B. Goldberg, director of the Sexuality and Gender Law Clinic.

"Mr. Messam's personal story, and the stories of countless other Jamaicans demonstrate the terrifying situation facing GLBT individuals in Jamaica" said Simrin Parmar, one of the Columbia law students who worked on this case. "We are thankful that Mr. Messam will be able to live openly as a gay man...safe from government-sponsored persecution," remarked Jennifer Stark, another Columbia law student who worked on this case, "but it is alarming to think about the fate of other GLBT people in Jamaica who are not as fortunate."

Mr. Messam was referred to Columbia's Sexuality and Gender Law Clinic by Immigration Equality, a national organization focused on immigration rights for GLBT individuals, which provided important assistance in the case.

"This experience...where students are responsible for working through the challenges of a case that makes a real world difference in an emerging and important area of law...is what the Sexuality and Gender Law Clinic is all about," said Professor Suzanne B. Goldberg. "Thanks to the students' work, we can now provide supporting materials to asylum advocates for gay Jamaicans anywhere in the world," she added.

Steel Pan music to replace dancehall!

patrick_manning.jpgIn an article in the Trinidad Express Prime Minister of Trinidad Patrick Manning at the official launch of the steel band Divine Echoes expressed the hope that it would replace their desires for music forms such as reggae/dancehall, hip-hop and other popular genres which in his opinion "do not result, in the kinds of directions that we consider ideal for the young people of Trinidad and Tobago."

The T&T PM is hopeful that the recently launched band, Divine Echoes, will sway the youth away from illicit living by turning them on to a more pristine form of music as opposed to the fare they are presently exposed to via the mass media.

Just how one will convince the young people to turn away from their cherished Jay-Z, Bounty Killa, Beenie Man, Soulja Boy, Munga, Fiddy, T-Pain and others of such ilk for the "Green Green Grass Of Home", none including Manning have yet explained.

Well, from where Yardflex stands he has his job cut out for him!

Gays and dancehall music

buju_bounty_beenie.jpgJamaica was the topic of hot discussion on doughty.gdbtv.com. Among the topics looked at were, 'Is Jamaica the most homophobic country in the world?', 'Does Jamaican reggae/dancehall murder music contribute to anti-Gay violence?', 'Should concerts by murder music singers be canceled?'

Examining these questions were Stop Murder Music campaigners, Dennis Carney of the Black Gay Men's Advisory Group, and Brett Lock of the Gay human rights group OutRage!

There were eight leading dancehall artistes in the hot seat among them were Buju Banton, Bounty Killer and Beenie Man who the group claimed have released songs openly advocating, encouraging and glorifying the murder of queers. They have never apologized or expressed a word of regret. On the contrary, they have defended their exhortations to "kill queers."

In an article written by Peter Tatchell for gayrepublic.org he didn't hold back any punches as he claimed the issue is not about mere homophobia. According to him it concerns incitement to murder.

peter_tatchell.jpg"Many Gay and straight Jamaicans argue that lyrics urging the killing of queers may not create homophobia and queer-bashing attacks, but that these lyrics do help legitimate and encourage them. When homophobic violence is extolled by big-name reggae super stars it
fuels and reinforces anti-Gay hatred. This hatred is the precondition of, and the gateway to, homophobic discrimination, harassment and violence. The murder music of these reggae icons leads some young men to believe that it is cool and acceptable to bash Lesbian and Gay people. It gives them license. It feeds their homophobic machismo," Tatchell argued.

Tatchell in his article also lashed out at the government, "The murder music singers are not the only culprits. The Jamaican government and police are notorious for their inaction against homophobic violence. According to Jamaican law, inciting violence and murder is a criminal offense. Why aren't these artists being prosecuted?"

He ended the article by claiming the fight would not stop until gay violence is ended and all gay Jamaicans can walk about in peace.

Beenie Man saves the day

Beeniman2.jpgAll hell broke loose at "Full Clip" last Saturday at the Puerto Seco Beach. We are talking bottles and stones raining in all directions and patrons jumping into the sea to get away. But what was causing all this? It was 4 am Sunday morning and still there were no big named acts to grace the stage.

Mavado, one of the advertised acts was busy hosting a show in Old Harbour and he didn't leave that venue until about 3:30 am, Macka another advertised name Yardflex understands was in England and Bounty Killer it is alleged had issues with the promoter because he was working on tracks while Beenie would be working with his band.

The melee was temporarily averted when Ninja Man went on stage and took command like a pro. He distracted them from their grouse and the place was nice again...until Ninja eventually left the stage, then bottles and stones reigned again!

This time the promoters put in a frantic call to Beenie Man who in trying to accommodate Bounty offered to close the show so as not be a distraction with his band.

Beenie Man had to drive like a mad man to the venue to perform on tracks as the crowd was out of control.

The doctor had the remedy and he effectively had them dancing and enjoying themselves. It was total pandemonium when Ninja Man and Capleton joined him on stage. The three kept the niceness vibes flowing until the end of the show.

The crowd left leaving behind evidence of the frustration lying all over the ground.

Kanye West's mom dies at 58

kanye-west.jpgKanye West's mother and former chairwoman of Chicago State University's English department, 58-year-old Dr. Donda West died suddenly last night reports have confirmed.

According to multiple sources, West was in Los Angeles and her death may have been the result of complications from a surgical procedure; Patricia Green, Dr. West's publicist, told CNN on today, Monday (November 12) that the surgery was cosmetic but did not provide further details.

According to AllHipHop.com, a representative from family issued the statement, "The family respectfully asks for privacy during this time of grief."

Kanye West chronicled his love for his mother in 'Hey Mama', a song from his 2005 album Late Registration.

In the song, Kanye raps, "(Hey Mama), I wanna scream so loud for you, cuz I'm so proud of you / Let me tell you what I'm about to do, (Hey Mama) / I know I act a fool but, I promise you I'm goin back to school /I appreciate what you allowed for me, I just want you to be proud of me (Hey Mama)."

West eventually performed the song in front of his mother and Oprah Winfrey on the TV host's highly rated show.

RaisingKanyeDondaWest.jpgAlthough she was renown as Kanye West's mother, Donda West had achieved much on her own.

She served as the Chair of the English Department at Chicago State University, but retired to act as Kanye's manager. She was an English professor for 31 years.

Earlier this year, she released a book called Raising Kanye, which chronicled her journey of raising her son.

Kanye's mom death has impacted her hometown in Chicago and already there is an outpouring of love.

Kendra G, a Morning Show co-host at Power 92 in Chicago shared in the rapper’s grief, "The city of Chicago is hurting for Kanye West and his family. We know how much he loved and valued his mother and we
just ask other cities to join us in prayer for Kanye," she said.

The Yardflex family also sends their condolence to Kanye West and his family.

Prodigal Son...From the dunghill to the top of the hill

Prodigal_son.jpgLike is the case with many young Jamaican males, his grandmother was his guardian, but when she died he "broke out".

Calvin Whilby aka Prodigal Son was educated in the admonition of the Lord by his grandmother, and she insisted that attending church was a way of life for him. Young Calvin accepted Christ at age 5, and continued through to age 13.

That was the age at which his grandmother died, and from thereon things went downhill for him...Prodigal's became rebellious and developed a 'don't care' attitude. It was no wonder with that attitude he relocated to Rema in Kingston, one of Jamaica's toughest inner-cities. In no time he was involved in gang and gun violence.

As Calvin put it, "I found protection and family in the gang."
Interestingly, the gang was called the "Fatherless Crew". Fortunately, he developed a longing for his heavenly father. He became convinced that the Lord loved him, when he realized that many of his "ragamuffin" colleagues were dying by the gun, but, he was still
alive.

After recommitting his life to Christ in 1998, he adopted his name after the biblical prodigal son and decided to use the gift of music God had given him to reach out to others.

Things looked up for him when he met musical genius and producer, Danny Browne who became not only his producer, but mentor and friend.

Prodigal Son has developed, and is now accepted as one of Jamaica's most prolific Gospel artiste.

He has performed at sold out venues, before crowds as huge as 150,000, at events such as Antigua Governmental Celebrations (Caribbean), International Reggae Festival of Life (Chicago, USA) Fun in the Sun, Recharge, Sting (Jamaica), France World Cup Qualifier Match (Jamaica vs. Mexico) Air Jamaica sponsored UK Tour, Israel & New Breed Tour (Jacksonville, USA) and many other International events.

He has shared stages with renowned Gospel Artistes, Fred Hammond, Donnie McClurkin, CeCe Winans, Jackie McCullough, Tobi Mac, Mary Mary, Israel Houghton & New Breed, Martha Munizzi, Kirk Franklyn, Yolanda Adams and mainstream artistes such as: Shaggy, Junior Gong, Beenie Man, Bounti Killa, Destiny's Child, Jermaine Jackson, Maxi Priest, Regina Belle, Calypso Rose, Barrington Levy, Luciano, Jimmy Cliff and more.

Prodigal Son has gained the respect of both fans and critics and, is among the few Jamaican gospel artistes who are appreciated in both the Christian arena and mainstream/secular and as such was the only Gospel Artiste that appeared on the 2006 B Mobile 'No Violence' school tour in Jamaica.

He has received several mainstream awards including: Jamaica
Federation of Musicians, best new gospel artiste for 2001, the X-News Award, Artist of the Year 2001, Marlin Award for Best Dancehall Recording for 2004, U.S. Urban Gospel Award, Best Producer 2005, Urban Gospel Award Best Caribbean Artiste, and the Canadian Maja Award Album of the year 2006.

He has copped numerous number one (1) spots on charts like UK's United by 1, Love 101 FM Jamaica, Flow FM Canada, Mystic 98, Fort Lauderdale, Florida and UK's Soulcare. Prodigal was interviewed and featured on the US network CBS on the 700 club programme 'Turning
Point' where he shared his life changing testimony.

His debut album Radikal Prodigal produced by Danny Browne featured crossover hits I Wish, Woe and Radikal Style, all three songs were the first dancehall gospel songs to be played on mainstream radio in Jamaica such as RJR, Irie FM and Hot 102. His second album Still
Standing which was self-produced was voted best gospel album of 2005 by Love 101 and track #10, Journey, was voted song of the year. A second song Track # 5 Still Standing is nominated by the International Reggae & World Music Award as best gospel song.

Prodigal has been voted best dressed artiste by Buzz Magazine, made the top 10 list of the Caribbean's finest and is the first and only Gospel artiste to be signed by BMobile, a major telecommunication
conglomerate. And, he has landed another corporate endorsement deal with Partners & Financial Investments Ltd. He'll be the spokesperson for the next three (3) years.

Now an ordained pastor Prodigal Son recently launched his fourth album a double CD featuring the work of international artiste Micah Stampley, Junior Tucker and Richie Stephens.

OUTSTANDING GOSPEL MUSIC AWARD WINNING GROUP.

GROUP SHAZE.jpgThe group SHAZE emerges with their landmark release album called "Praise Him" live at The Open Bible Community Church, 2610 N.W. 119th Street, Miami. The release features song like: "Every Nation," "Praise Him," "Blessed" and "Show Him."

Christian/Reggae/R&B recording artistes – SHAZE, the Outstanding Gospel Music Award winning group, is also recipient of the 2007 Hopeton Lewis Caribbean Gospel Music Award for Best Singing Group of the year. They were nominated for two outstanding music awards: Top Gospel Singing Group of the year and Top Gospel Song of the Year .

SHAZE brings a unique sound to the music industry with their Jamaican background. Under the spiritual influence of God, they spread the word through music. The uniqueness of their style draws many people to them. With many years of experience under his belt, producer and songwriter, Maurice "Brian" Gregory has influenced the group towards the success of their album. The album was inspired by the need to praise God regardless of life's circumstances.

SHAZE is the first female group under the label Mastrak Productions. They have been blessed with songs such as "Every Nation"; a song that is a cliché of what Jesus meant when he said the gospel must be preached as a witness to every kingdom of every nation. "Praise Him" is another heart-impacting phenomenon that will bring the heart of people close to God. The way in which this song was done is like meeting the people where they are and taking them to where you want them to be.

Each song on the album comes with one aim - to lift up the name of Jesus and to reach every heart and soul in every nation.

Record 57 medals for Jamaica at Special Olympic World Games

By: Dwight Fraser and Devon Anderson

special_olympic_team.jpg

Jamaica secured a record 57 medals at the 12th Special Olympic World Games In China in October, shattering the previous best of 37 garnered in Ireland in 2003.

The Jamaicans participated in eight sporting disciplines. They were: Track and Field, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Bocce, Badminton, Swimming and Roller Skating.

Virtually lighting up Shanghai, the Jamaicans developed a cult like following ....never mind the peas bread, and the vegetarian goose with blended carrot Yangzhou style.

That 13 hour flight across the Atlantic only served to rev up the Black Green and Gold delegation of 55 Athletes and 11 coaches.

The Special Olympic Reggae Boys took China by storm, in living up to Munga Honourables, 'Bad from mi Baan', beating everything in front of them. Led by Sydney Manyan and Rocky Lindsay, they wrapped up a memorable sting with a five nil win over China, in the final.

Jamaican Swimmers secured 11 Medals in their splash led by Kadian "good like gold" Ingleton, who secured 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze.

In addition three other athletes who stood out with excellent performances were Coy Briscoe in Track and Field, Ryan Farquarhson in Track and Field, and Terry Burgess in Bocce.

Briscoe with two bronze medals, one in the half marathon event and the other in the 1500 meters, taking third place in the grueling Marathon event in just 1 hour and 36 minutes.

Farquarhson in his third stint at the World Games level, secured 1 bronze in the 500 meters, a silver in the 2x300 meter relay, with compatriot Richard Habib, getting his gold in the 300 meters. While Terry Burgess was responsible for raking in a gold in the men's singles event, a silver in the doubles and a bronze in the team section.

Executive Director of Special Olympic Jamaica Lorna Bell explained that she was satisfied with the performance of the coaches, and athletes for their effort in flying the banner high in the Oriental Pearl. Bell was given the Order of Distinction (Officer Class) upon her return from China.

One athlete said, on the night before Jamaica left Shanghai that - the Jamaicans sell off!

Happy Birthday Marco Dean

beenie_d'angel.jpg

Beenie Man's son celebrated his first birthday today, November 9 and the worst part of it is that the doc could not even get to give him as much as a kiss!

According to him because of the injunction taken out against him he could not visit. He tried to call D'Angel and as soon as she heard his voice she hung up the phone. You could hear the grief in his voice as he spoke with Music News. Boy Beenie, what else can go wrong in his life.

Diamond District Ja, that is the name of the Macka Diamonds entertainment company.

By: Joseph Cunningham

moneyO.jpgThis news has reached Yardflex just weeks after the deejay had cut all ties with her former booking agency, Khool Booking Agency.

She explained the reasons motivating her move. "I won’t even get into what happened between me and Mr. Alexander, because what's done is done. I wish him all the best and thank him for all he did for me, but this is a new day, same book but a new chapter, and right now I see it as only fitting to take charge of my career in an official way, because to tell the truth, I have never had a manager, I have always handled most of my own affairs, so all I am doing is making it official now."

"None of what I am about to do is new to me, because all of us as entertainers have done it before, and as time goes on, we learn the more professional approach, and can deal with things more in depth because of the passion what drive we, because at the end of the day, this is our careers, not our managers or publicists."

Referring to a new supporting cast, Macka stated that, "No man or woman is an island, so I am not going to try and do this on my own; I have a competent support team." And, she said that all bookings which were confirmed under her previous agency would be honoured, however, all business-related matters will be handled by her office.

"Diamond District Ja. is not only about Macka Diamond, but is also about the development of any artiste that my company decides to work with," the saucy deejay explained.

Jay Z cheating on Beyonce

jayzandbeyonce.jpgHmm, Beyonce's away touring in Asia and her fiancé Jay Z is wasting no time in seeking female attention!

According to website mediatakeout.com they have exclusive information which points to the fact that the hip hop superstar has struck up an intimate friendship with a biracial exotic dancer.

The young woman, who dances part time at an upscale New York gentleman's club, has been spotted all over town with Jay Z in recent weeks. And word is that she's officially on Jay Z's payroll.

We spoke with one of Jay Z's colleagues at Def Jam who told us all about the label head's new gal pal. The insider told MediaTakeout.com, "It's shameless. [Jay Z] takes her to [promotional] events like she's one of the team. No one here even knows what she does... well we know what she does, but we don't know what she does for [Def Jam]." The insider added, "If you're going to sleep with that stripper then fine - but why do you have to bring her into your business. That's just plain dumb."

Well I guess the real hottaclaps will take place when Beyonce returns and gets wind of all the gossip...but then again we never did see what she saw in him.

J-Lo finally comes clean

anthony_lopez3.jpgJ-Lo really takes people for idiots. Like duh...her tommy getting bigger everyday and she thinks that people can't figure out what's going on.

At a concert in Miami last night she made the announcement "Marc and I are expecting."

"Wow tell us something we didn't know!" According to news on the internet after her announcement, Anthony kissed Lopez's belly and said: "I didn't know she was going to talk."

Lopez, 39, did not say when she was due to give birth.

Her expanding tummy has been at the centre of much attention in recent times, but until now she had kept mum on her impending arrival.

It was, of course, the worst kept secret in Hollywood, but now the singer's quickly expanding bump is fuelling new rumours she is expecting twins.

Lopez is wrapping up the final days of her hectic US tour.

The singer said during a live interview that she was told that a ban of her song is being contemplated. However, she argued that she needs a logical explanation as to why such a positive and educational song should be banned.

In relating news there are talks in the pipeline for Queen Ifrika to be a guest on the Oprah Winfrey show. The talk show host has a history of child advocacy, which is motivated by her consistently documented past as a victim of child molestation

Jamaican frenzy in Africa

By: Joseph Cunningham

nerissa-irving.jpg

Big up the black, the green and the gold! Nerissa Irving was in total control at the Miss Tourism of the Millennium Pageant, held in Ethiopia last Saturday.

Sponsored by K.O.K International, she was the first Jamaican to have won the Miss Millennium Queen of the Caribbean. The sash is awarded to the most elegant contestant, one who is most knowledgeable of her country, and who interviews the best for media. The pageant was one of many events held during the Coronation celebrations of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I.

The 21 year old Jamaican born migrated to the United States of America as an infant, and has been living there since. She is currently based in Miami.

"It was a pleasure to have represented Jamaica," she told Yardflex from her Ethiopian hotel room early Tuesday morning. Further, Irving said she was extremely popular in Ethiopia. "I recall being in the hotel room and started hearing a lot of noise outside. I was surprised when members of the security personnel told me that people from nearby communities were crowded outside, asking for an opportunity to meet Miss Jamaica!"

Nerissa is an independent model, and it was because of her exploits as a model that she was contacted to enter by organizers of the event. Additionally, she owns a charitable organization, "Majestic Bestow," which currently focuses on providing for needy infants in Sierra Leone.

"Right now children of all age groups share one department at the home, and so I am currently working towards building other sections so they can be separated by age groups," she revealed.

Nerissa
is currently gearing to enter Florida International University, where she hopes to pursue Business Management and Public Relations accreditations.

"I'm back, wicked than ever" – Spice

By Joan Wilson

Spice2.jpgSpice is back! She is making no bones about it either. Pregnancy might have slowed her down, but definitely didn't hamper her progress on the dancehall scene.

Now that she has her precious bundle of joy, Spice is even more determined to eat a bigger slice of the pie out of dancehall and according to her, "I'm back, wicked than ever, all dem gal weh tink dem a run di place...watch out..." was the ominous warning from the lyrically sharp DJ.

Those are no idle threats considering she has pitted her deejaying skills against the very energetic DJ Elephant Man at Sting 2002 and that contest was just too close to call. She has the respect of other top male DJs who has seen her in lethal action.

And to think that the sexy, almost shy DJ once contemplated a career as a Chartered Accountant!

"Yup I was doing business in school and I passed eight subjects...was gearing up for sixth form at St. Catherine High and decided I couldn't deal with all those numbers for the rest of my life," Spice confessed.

After that Grace Hamilton aka Spice enrolled at the Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts to do voicing and drama...during that time she also joined the group Ashe.

Outstanding performances are not strange to Spice as while a student at St. Catherine High she entered the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (J.C.D.C) festival competition year after year in the singing category, all the time earning for her school 5 gold medals in total.

Spice finally got the break she was seeking in 1999 to sing when she went on Nuffy's programme called "Many Moods of Nuffy" which featured her Portmore community.

After that her friends started encouraging her to pursue a career in singing, but Spice soon found out that she much rathered the effect she had on her fans when she deejayed!

It was that side of her that impressed Supreme Promotion's Heavy D who took her under his wings and gave her, her first big performance on Sting 2000. Spice earned for herself four encores...she had arrived!

Spice.jpgNow a mother Spice admits to being motivated by her son and that is the catalyst to push her career to a more professional level and as such she is working with the best to take her to the next level in the biz. Her team members include publicity firm Khool International headed by Ray Alexander, booking agent, stylist, road manager, street team and of course she already has Madhouse dealing with most of her production. Spice is also working with other top ranked producers.

"I am also doing more radio and television friendly songs...of course I still have rude girls songs for dancehall fans," she hurriedly pointed out as she stressed the need to be more 'corporate friendly.' "I am flexible like that...I can even work at a gospel show if I have to," she teased.

Spice has just wrapped up recording three singles, "I'm Back" on the North Coast Riddim for House of Vibes, "Done Out", on Dem riddim for Ward 21 and "Inna Di Light", on the Gear Box riddim for Truck Back.

Next week she will begin the shooting of the video for all three songs.

Spice has a very active calendar for the holiday including Sting, Island Explosion, Tivoli Jamboree and so far a show in Canada and Atlanta.

Busy… busy with charity

By: Joseph Cunningham

busy_signal.jpgBusy Signal made good on his pledge to assist accident victims, Onieka Taylor and Ransford Roper recently. The two, students of St. Jago High School suffered from a case of extreme bowlegs as a result of the unfortunate occurrence.

Before his presentation Busy Signal performed in front of an auditorium packed with students. He then presented cheques to each of the two students to assist with medical expenses. The crowd of students erupted in cheers and chants, screaming Signal's name as he made the presentations.

Oneika was unable to attend the concert as she is still in hospital but her mother collected on her behalf. She requires reconstructive surgery on one leg and the other requires two surgical pins. Ransford walked on stage proudly as he collected his cheque which will assist in purchasing correctional braces for both legs.

New date for Diamond Rush return showcase to be

MUNCHI.jpgThe much anticipated relaunch of the Diamond Rush Label which was slated to be held at the Asylum Nightclub on Thursday, November 1 did not materialize, but Angella 'Munchie Lue' Phillips has assured Yardflex that it will definitely happen.

"We wanted everything to be right and with the rain and other factors...we decided it would be best to postpone it until a later date," 'Munchie Lue' explained.

"I also want to apologize to Asylum and Hitz FM, our two main sponsors, for the relaunch...but it will be worth the wait," she stressed.

Currently the label has a talented roster of new artistes to unleash and all this is being coordinated by Munchie Lue who will be looking to launch out in the recording arena too.

Having been around her brother Garfield 'Sampalue' Phillips in the early days of Diamond Rush, plus with her father Philprat still producing out of England, she developed a passion for singing.

Still, with an over-protective brother like Sampalue and helping to manage the day-to-day activities of the label, Munchie Lue had to put that desire on hold.

"In those days women hanging out at the studio was kinda frowned upon...and Sampalue was protective of me, so I concentrated on helping him to run the company," she informed.

With the record company looking to make its mark again in the biz, Munchie Lue won't be putting her singing career in the background this time.

She recently recorded "Where Is The Justice" and if the sneak peak is anything to go by then this song will be going places!

With a certificate in public relations and now a student of University of the West Indies School of Continuing Education focusing on counseling, this singer/social worker has her hands full.

With a smile she said, "I have several passions in my life...and if something has to give then you know it won't be music."

In between working as a counselor, Munchie Lue is overseeing the day-to-day stuff at Diamond Rush and in between that fitting in studio time.

With "Where Is The Justice" set to be released by the end of this month, Angella is now working on two more singles, "Dancehall Night" and "If You Know".

Munchie Lue will also be one of the featured performers on the rescheduled Diamond Rush showcase...the date which she promised will be announced soon.

Phone Sex can be great fun

By: Rootzgirl

Rasta-Girl-Posters.jpgYeah yeah, this one is not for the prim and proper out there. It's for people who just love excitement and like doing something different. How you think I keep my man happy...cause whether him beside me or out of the country...him get him pleasure same way!

So this one is for all the lovers who have to separate from time to time and straight up you have no desire to cheat, here's a good alternative.

Well, who says sex between both of you can only happen when you are physically in the same place. Why not eliminate the distance by taking the excitement to your lover?

The next time he calls you on the phone, just blow his mind. Let him know you are missing him like crazy and that you are burning up and need some satisfaction.

Remember, this is not for those who are shy; you have to open up and come on as tantalizingly and seductively as you can, or else this will never work.

Make sure you are alone in your room with no distractions, then set the play in motion. If you don't have a vivid imagination, this might not be as successful.

Listed below are some tips to aid you in giving that man of yours a whale of a time on the phone – trust me, phone conversation will never be the same again!

• Put that sweet tongue of yours to good use. Your voice should range from softly seductive to cooing. Know when to whisper and when to inject urgency in your voice. Remember, you determine the mood.

• Set the scene as if he is at home. Candles, negligee, pour yourself over the bed or floor like a cat, then dial the number...and start the action. Prepare him for the whole play. Take his mind back to a stormy session you had. Tell him to close his eyes, and lean back against the couch, or bed. Slowly undress him. Tell him what you are doing to him...get the drift?

• Don't leave anything to his imagination. Tell him in vivid details just what you are doing to him (and yourself). Tell him how it's making you feel.

• Knowledge is power. Isn't it great that you know your lover's weaknesses. Well use them to drive him crazy. If he's sensitive at a particular spot, tell him just what you are doing to it. If he eats you alive when you are in a particular outfit, then describe it in detail.

• Open up. Since he's not beside you and don’t have to feel self- conscious, ask him what's his wildest fantasy and see if you can bring it to pass over the phone.

• When you feel that moment coming on don't be afraid to let him hear your increased breathing, make all the sex noise you normally do. Urge him along with you until you have both climbed that stimulating peak.

If your lover is away, expect a phone call later...don't put these valuable tips to waste…have the experience of a lifetime.

Wise patrons will see stars in the east

MorganHeritageGroup250px.jpgEast Fest is back! After taking a break last year, the charity event staged by Morgan Heritage will be held this year, on December 29.

Yardflex spoke with lead singer for the band Gramps and he assured us that, "Plans are well on the way, and patrons can expect pure niceness."

He said that they decided to take a break last year because of their extensive tour schedule added to the fact they had to deal with a death in the family.

The event is usually staged in St. Thomas, however, no confirmation of a venue has been given as yet.

The last staging of the event ended prematurely, when patrons hurled bottles and stones unto the stage, after it was announced that headline act, Bounty Killer would not be performing.

This year, Capleton, Busy Signal, Munga Honourable, Freddie McGregor and Chuck Fendah are just a few of the entertainers slated to perform at EAST FEST 2k7.

Steelie Bashment still New York's Champs

steelie_bashment2.jpgSteelie Bashment has been New York's champion sound for 17 years and they've worn that city's "Sound of the Year" crown for more than 7 years. As a major forerunner in the rich culture of reggae music in New York, Steelie Bashment has developed over the years, becoming a brand identified by its Caribbean flavored music, media and entertainment.

No longer just a sound system, Steelie Bashment also created 'Waah Gwan Internet Radio' and the annual Steelie Bashment birthday/anniversary celebrations have also become a much anticipated event. Since its inception in 1990, Steelie Bashment's mission has been to not only spin the cutting sounds in the dancehall, but to also be a leading force in Caribbean entertainment internationally.

Selector and founder, Dwayne "Steelie Bashment" McKay went about accomplishing his goals, armed with an arsenal of the best in contemporary and vintage tunes spanning not only the Caribbean culture but also R & B, Soul and other popular genres. Born and raised in Brooklyn to Trinidadian and Jamaican parents, McKay grew up in a deep Caribbean musical mix that influenced his decision to become a selector for a number of sound systems. He honed his skills with 'sounds' like: Spectrum, Stereosonic, Thunderbolt, Afrique, Addies and Silver Hawk. A former member of the dream team – "Bashment Squad," that consisted of Tony Matterhorn, Super Twitch and Super Claude, McKay was inspired to branch out on his own after Matterhorn's post Addies success.

After all this time it is no wonder that Steelie Bashment has an extensive following. The sound system is known all over North and South America, Europe, The Caribbean and Asia. Capitalizing on this popularity, Steelie Bashment expanded, adding promoter/event producer to his list of activities.

In 2003 Waah Gwan Radio, an internet radio link was launched and in a short time began racking up ratings that are the envy of most world wide web radio links. Waah Gwan Radio streams live from 6pm to 2am on Weekdays and 24 hours on weekends at www.steeliebashment.com.

"Steelie is hungry – I want it all," the brilliant and talented businessman declared. He maintains that it was his own drive and hunger for success that kept him at the top for 17 years, and he is still climbing. "No matter what, I just keep going harder and harder," he said.

Vybz Kartel's baby mother has had enough

vybz_kartel.jpgThreats and abuses have caused Sherika Todd, the mother of deejay Vybz Kartel's child to be contemplating an end to their four-year relationship.

Todd has made a report to the Runaway Bay police, the station closest to her home. "I made the report Monday of this week and I called them [the police] this morning again because he [Kartel] sent me another text saying he's on his way, obviously to my house and he has no reason to come here, he knows that much," Todd told reporters.

According to Todd, "everything has been on and off, we argue every now and then and I told him that I don't want us to be together anymore and that's when he started to threaten me that he was not going to take care of the child and like him going kill mi, cause him a sey me know wa him capable of, cause mi deh roun him long enough."

When contacted, investigating officer Constable Ransford Wisdom, confirmed Todd had reported the matter. The police revealed that they have been unable to get in touch with Kartel, whose real name is Adijah Palmer, face to face, but Constable Wisdom said, "We warned him [Kartel] not to carry out this threat against Ms. Todd." The police have also expressed an interest in meeting with Kartel.

According to Todd, all she wants is for Kartel to take care of his child, but as far as their relationship goes, that part of her life is over.

"I have a daughter to live for," Todd said about their seven month old daughter. She added, "I just don't want to be with him [Kartel] anymore."

Todd said, "He [Kartel] has always wanted me to have a child for him. I was pregnant once for him, I was carrying twins, but I met in a motor vehicle accident and I lost them in April of last year. I got pregnant for him again and I have a child for him now."

Barbee, Beenie Video for "Paddy Cake" and "Diva in my Sneakers" sell off

videoshoot_beenie.jpg
Barbie and Beenie have just wrapped up their video shoot in New York and no one could be happier about it than the sultry singer. In an interview with Yardflex she bubbled with enthusiasm.

"I'm excited about the out come of the video because it shows a different side of me compared to the first video entitled'Missing You' feat. Junior Kelly. My family, friends and the dollets were involved and it's a colorful, sexy, yet playful video. I find this song to be one of my favorites cause it promotes females to be confident and the beat shows both sides of my culture Jamaican and Nigerian," she stressed.

videoshoot_barbee.jpg

According to Barbee the video will definitely be something to see and she can't wait until it is premiered in about two weeks time. Then she
acknowledged the rest of the world will get to see and love it too.

Shot on location in Forest Park, Queens, New York under the direction of Scenario and Scuba (who has directed videos for the likes of 50 Cent and Fabulous) it features Acid Ladies from the Bronx and six-year-old Grenadian choreographer Hanan.

In addition, there were cameos from the members of G Unit and Sporty Thieves camp. The treatment was done by Paris Reid. Featured are some scenes from the video.

Virgin Atlantic boss re-records "One Love" to boost new flights

richard_branson.jpgVirgin Atlantic's billionaire boss, Sir Richard Bronson was in Jamaica this week to tighten up loose ends as he prepares for next week's inaugural flight between London and Jamaica. In keeping with a new code-share agreement between Air Jamaica and Virgin Atlantic, the UK based airline is taking over from Air Jamaica on its UK - Jamaica flights.

On Tuesday, October 30, Sir Bronson visited Tuff Gong Studios where he recorded a version of 'One Love' that will be used as a tool to attract millions to Jamaica's shores. The collaborative effort with Stephen Marley and the I Threes was just one of several planned events to set off this new and exciting venture.

Strawberry Hill also became a hub of excitement as a press conference hosted there welcomed 19 journalists from Europe, who accompanied the Virgin Atlantic team, as well as hosts of Jamaican based media. Fab 5, Chris Blackwell, Marcia Griffiths and Copeland Forbes were among those present.

In May, service to London was discontinued by Air Jamaica who reported losses in 2006 of US$27 million. The code-sharing deal, which includes the sale of Air Jamaica's London slot, was signed by Jamaica's previous government and after meeting with Prime Minister Golding on Wednesday, Sir Bronson is satisfied with the new administration's assurance to honor all contracts reached with the People's National Party (P.N.P) and Virgin Atlantic.

A Tribute to: The Coronation of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I

selassie.jpgNational Geographic reported that in 1930, as the dawn cleared in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on November 2, it met everyone getting ready for the special historical event to take place that morning - The Coronation of The Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah.

Together with his Empress, His Imperial Majesty, Haile Selassie I spent the night before in prayer and devotion at the most high alter. During the morning chanting of praises resonated and dancing priests with pulsating drum rhythms joined in. Ancient Jewish rites which were in use at the time of King David, were re-lived right there before the ark of the covenant, the report stated. The Coptic Church in all its impressive might and splendor evoked biblical rituals that seemed to roll the centuries back.

As the time came for this coronation, which is the most important event in the Rastafarian Calendar today, His Imperial Majesty entered the ceremonial hall attired in white silk. He was escorted by aides and clergy and was preceded by waving incense burners.

"The Emperor's name was Anglicized as Power of the Holy Trinity and he gave his sacred pledge to uphold the Orthodox religion of the Church, to support and administer the laws of the country for the betterment of the people, to maintain the integrity of Ethiopia, and to found schools for developing the Spiritual and Material welfare of her subjects," National Geographic reported.

Once His Imperial Majesty took his place on the throne, his holiness Abuna Kyrillos broke the solemn silence with the following decree:

"Ye princes and ministers, ye nobles and chiefs of the army, ye soldiers and people of Ethiopia, and ye doctors and chiefs of the clergy, ye professors and priests, look ye upon our Emperor Haile Selassie the First, descended from the dynasty of Menelik the First, who was born of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, a dynasty perpetuated without interruption from the time of King Sehale to our times."

Following ancient customs as when Samuel anointed David, chanting and prayers to the God of Gods rose from priestly voices and wonderful gifts bestowed. The Abuna then anointed His Imperial Majesty's head with oil and further declared:

"That God make this Crown a Crown of Glory. That, by the Grace and the blessing which we have given, you may have an Unshaken Faith and a Pure Heart, in order that you may inherit the Crown Eternal. So be it."

Vegas gets real with Yardflex

By Joan Wilson

mr.vegas.jpgVegas has been in the business for twenty years now and there seem to be no stopping this talented, versatile performer.

Ever since he impacted big time on the scene with 'Heads High' that's just what he has been doing holding his head high above the rest of the pack.

Yardflex caught up with the busy singjay who is now in New York promoting his latest album 'Hot It Up' and in particular the single 'Teck Weh Yuhself'.

"Well I am doing a lot of radio and newsprint interviews, the vibe is just right and everything is going great," Vegas shared.

But even with all that positive energy surrounding him, there are still a lot of challenges the singjay has to deal with – his major headache being working on track.

"Promoter want you to do a full 40 minute show on tracks and it's a different thing from bands. It's even harder for you when big named artistes are doing it, so some of the promoters will ask "who are you to insist on a band?"

Vegas went on to talk about his kind of songs being enhanced with a good band and on the other hand being hampered when he works on tracks.

"I have to turn down some shows cause I don't want to short change the fans. That's the biggest obstacle in the biz, plan on doing less shows, less work and less money fi government tax," he joked.

Clifford Smith aka Vegas describes himself as a humble, hardworking performer who just loves music. And there is no doubt about his love affair with it as he has had to overcome a lot of obstacles to make it in the very competitive industry.

His first hurdle came when he went to a local producer's house to acquire a master tape he felt was rightfully his, the producer was ready for Vegas, with a crowbar. One hit to the jaw meant Vegas was sipping food through a straw for six weeks.

Hearing Beenie Man's "Who Am I" one day during his recovery made Vegas head to the doctor and demand all his facial hardware be removed immediately. It freed his jaw somewhat, but when Vegas arrived at producer Jeremy Harding's studio to demand a chance at the riddim Beenie had used, he still wasn't able to fully open his mouth.

Using the same Playground riddim Beenie used for "Who Am I", Vegas recorded the hectic 'Nike Air', an instant hit in Jamaican. As soon as 'Nike Air' hit the top of the charts, 'Heads High' was issued and became a smash not only on the island but the U.K. as well.

Vegas has not looked back releasing winners such as 'Hot Gal' with Sean Paul, 'Taxi Fare', 'Lean Wid It', 'Hot Wuk' and one of his biggest anthem in Jamaica 'Do You Know'.

Since he dropped the album 'Hot It Up' it has been doing well. 'Hot Wuk' a track off the album made its way on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop chart.

Among the tracks on the album are 'Teck Weh Yuhself', 'You Gonna Need Me', 'Sitting On Me Corner' and 'Tambourine'.

The album which is independently done feature song familiar to Jamaica which according to Vegas is why focus is on promoting it overseas.

Hot It Up is a mixture of dancing tunes, lovers rock and gangsa tune "it's a rounded album," Vegas quipped.

Signs your woman is cheating

By Rootzgirl

Rasta-Girl-Posters.jpgHomegirls don't cuss me out but fair is fair. The guys seem to think I am unfair and they wanna know the signs to look for when their woman is cheating.

Honestly this one here is real tricky cause women are just good like that. They could be giving you the whole bakery and it would be hard to notice anything amiss!

Still as good as they are, sometimes, just sometimes they slip up...but guys, you had better make sure it's not a case of you being too darned paranoid before you go accusing the poor woman of giving away the goods.

Here are eight (8) signs to look out for that will arouse
suspicions:

1. You know how you guys just love to refer to us as 'madda miserable'? Think back when last did she nag you about something you failed to do? Honestly, chances are some guy is being sweet to her which has taken the focus totally off you...watch it!!

2. Don't give a damn – Yup something is definitely amiss when she starts going all out in her appearance and if you criticize saying you don't like a certain outfit and she shrugs it off! Hello...it doesn't matter again what you think about how she looks...hmm, someone is happy elsewhere with that new look.

3. We now moves to Me...In the beginning of the relationship you guys were a team. If she is buying a car, she needs your input...a television she wants you there...if only just for company. These days you are lucky if you know what she is up to. On top of that when you ask questions surrounding her movements she tells you that you are 'crowding her'. I see it's time for a little more invasion!

4. Headaches increasing – Be careful on this one though. Some headaches are real! But if you were the type that lives for sex and suddenly she is having all these headaches that prevents some bedroom romp...you are definitely getting some signal here.

5. Tightness check...Guys this can only work if you are very alert. If you have been away for a month or even two weeks and when you return the pumps feel as if it was in action…you know the kind of resistance you should feel from an inactive vagina is not there...weeeell...it probably wasn't parked as you thought.

6. You don't move her in bed no more...brother, if your lovemaking used to do it for her and it's no longer cutting it...then chances are she had someone who showed her a better deal, making yours pale in comparison.

7. Watch the girlfriends – Guys this one will be the hardest one to catch her in, cause women really make time for their girlfriends and they cover for each other! But sometimes, girlfriends are just ploys to meet up with the other guys. She has her time with him, make it back to girlfriend's house and poor dumb you still none the wiser for these activities.

8. Waterworks – Every woman knows that when all else fails go for the waterworks! If you get suspicious, we cry about being hurt that you don't trust us and by the time we are through you are left feeling sorry for us...and of course we are one side laughing our heads off...yeah we kinda figured the tears would turn the argument around.

Madonna: Like an Icon, reveals secrets about the singer

madonna.jpg"She wanted to have Tupac Shakur's baby"
Madonna begged Tupac Shakur to have a child with her, it has been claimed. The Hung Up singer is said to have briefly dated the rapper a year before his death in 1996, and was desperate to start a family with him.

Lucy O'Brien claims in her new book "Madonna: Like an Icon," "In her mid-30s Madonna desperately wanted children and had various relationships with unlikely men, in the hope she would conceive."

But Madonna, now 49, was allegedly dumped by Tupac for not fitting in with his bad boy rapper image. The Music singer's friend, Alison Clarkson, claimed, "She was going out with him but homegirls were saying to him, 'I can't believe you're going out with a white girl,' so she got dumped!"

Madonna went on to form a relationship with her personal trainer Carlos Leon and, in October 1996, gave birth to his daughter Lourdes. The book also documents Madonna and actor Sean Penn's wedding day in 1985, which was witnessed by a host of star guests, including Martin Sheen, Andy Warhol and Carrie Fisher.

Madonna is now married to British film director Guy Richie, 39, with whom she has a seven-year-old son Rocco. Last year, she was granted temporary custody of a two-year-old Malawian boy, David Banda.

Da Brat charged with aggravated assault

da_brat.jpgFollowing a dispute with a waitress at a nightclub northeast of Atlanta, 33-year-old Da Brat was arrested early Thursday (November 1).

Shawntae Harrie aka Da Brat was charged with aggravated assault according to DeKalb County Police spokeswoman Mekka Parish.

Officers answered a call to Studio 72 at 1:20 a.m. about a "brief pushing sort of thing," Parish said.

Police couldn't say whether the nightclub is the one that Jermaine Dupri opened earlier this year, but the street address is the same. Club owners couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

The police report indicates Harris and a 24-year-old waitress at the club got into a squabble after the waitress bumped into her. At some point, the waitress walked away and moments later was hit in the face with the bottle of rum.

According to the police spokeswoman the waitress, who sustained a deep laceration to the cheek and some swelling on the forehead, was driven to a hospital by a friend.

Harris' address is listed as Chicago. It wasn't known why she was in the Atlanta area.

Harris was the first female rapper to have a platinum-selling album. She has appeared on VH1 reality shows "Celebrity Fit Club" and "The Surreal Life."

bow_wow&omarion.jpgBow Wow and Omarian diss their ex in new song
Well, well, well, men can be real petty too. Bow Wow and Omarion have a new song coming out and from according to Mediatakeout.com it will be casting some words at the women now out of their lives.

The website claimed that a member of Bow Wow's camp, the song is a thinly veiled attempt to go after their exes Ciara (who used to date Bow Wow) and Rihanna (who used to date Omarion).

"The song was initially supposed to be a male version of the TLC song Scrubs. But Bow Wow and Omarion put their own personal twist on it. There are a few things in it that only Ciara and Rihanna would understand...I can't wait to hear their response," the insider revealed.

Beenie Man apologies to JLP government

Beeniman.jpgInternational dancehall recording superstar, Moses 'Beenie Man' Davis has offered his humble apology to the Jamaica Labour Party for recent comments made, after his alleged tax evasion case on Monday, October
29.

The apology came after Beenie Man was asked by someone in court, not knowing the person was a reporter, if he thought he was being targeted because of his political affiliation. The dancehall artiste – without giving it proper thought - immediately responded, saying that he believed he was in fact being targeted, and that it is being strongly said around the music circles.

Jamaica Labour Party
General Secretary Karl Samuda sent out a press release dismissing the allegation as "misguided, mischievous and absurd."

In a statement issued through Davis' publicist Ray Alexander of Khool International, on Wednesday, October 31, Beenie Man apologetically said, "After deep reflection and investigation it has come to my
attention that the information and the sources around me were not credible and that my statements were grossly inaccurate.

My sources were misinformed and trying to make this issue seem political when it clearly isn't because this matter has been in front of the court from as early as April of this year, but apparently the
documentations were submitted to my past management and not forwarded directly to me.

I have absolutely no bias towards the J.L.P government and wouldn't intentionally try to create any animosity but it is a normal human reaction if somebody tells you that somebody is fighting you to try and defend yourself.

Again I am very sorry and it was irresponsible to act on impulse before verifying that the information was truthful."
