Ninja Man wants a clash at Sting 2k7

By: Joseph Cunningham

sting_launch2.jpg

"It's been a while since I have committed murder at
Sting" – Ninja Man

The Don Gorgon who many refer to as 'Mr. Sting' is in fighting form and he is ready for action – he sounded the battle cry at Sting Launch held last night at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston.

The charismatic DJ made an appeal to the promoters at the launch of Guinness Sting 2007 held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel last night.

"Send Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Sizzla, Super Cat and Mad Cobra all at once let me kill them lyrically," Ninja Man fired.

The Don Gorgon argued that lyrical competition in the form of clashing, is the institution which is responsible for the meteoric rise of all the biggest names in dancehall history, past and present. They all keep fighting against clashing, saying that it creates violence. But what they need to do is find a way to control the stage area and let the clash happen, Ninja Man pointed out.

Furthermore, he argued, "What I saw on television a few weeks ago was a series of live clashing on national T.V.! Digicel Rising Star competition has taken the Sting idea and is becoming a huge success.
Sting needs to take back its trade mark."

The show will be held at Jamworld in Portmore, St. Catherine, Jamaica on December 26. This year the show will feature the segments, Dancehall's Finest, The Pioneers, The Upcomers, The Beautiful Ladies of the Dancehall and a segment revealing new talent.

Dancehall's Finest will be organized to feature a special Bounty Killer and Beenie Man display, as well as the other usual suspects. The Pioneers will feature Josie Wales and Buju Banton, the Upcomers will highlight the likes of DeMarco and Shano. The ladies of dancehall will be starred by D'Angel and Barbee.

Sting team member Howard McKintosh revealed that his team will be working in tandem with the Jamaica Defence Force (JCF), which will deploy 1,200 to Jamworld on the night of the event.

Beenie Man blames government for problems

edit_Beenie_Man.jpgBeenie Man's claim that he was being targeted because of political reasons was firmly dismissed by the ruling Jamaica Labour Party.

According to a release on radiojamaica.com his claim was referred to as "Misguided, mischievous and absurd!"

According to Beenie Man, he is being targeted by the new Government because of his support for the People's National Party (PNP).

The JLP stressed that the tax assessment levied on Beenie Man and the action to recover through the courts was initiated long before the present government took office.

They also pointed out that Beenie Man's former manager and PNP candidate, Patrick Roberts, recently stated that it was not the first time the government had attempted to collect the multi-million dollar tax claim.

According to the JLP, Mr. Roberts also stated that his company had challenged the tax assessment in the past.

Beenie Man will be returning to court on December 10 to face the music.

Next on the CONNECT JAMAICA agenda according to Julian Jones-Griffiths are Shortwood Practising,Swallowfield Primary and a school to be announced in Stony Hill.

No Credit, Bad Credit, Aquiline Card is For You!

By: Olimatta Taal

card.jpgImagine this situation, you need to rent a car but you don't have a credit card. What do you do? You have bad credit but you really want a credit card, could there be a solution? Aquiline Cards is the solution and is available for companies who have employees that can't get the standard credit card.

This is how it works. The Aquiline Card is a Visa or MasterCard that is set up through a pre-paid system that can be used anywhere that Visa or MasterCard is accepted. The card can be used as long as the value has not been depleted. Having access to a credit card of this sort will open up opportunities for more financial services and online purchases.

Lisa Raye's Husband Michael Missick is having an affiair

lisa-raye_&_missick.jpgSeems likes some exciting juicy days are ahead in the lives of the celebs. A gosisp website reported that Lisa Raye's husband, Turks and Caicos Premiere Michael Missick may be having an affair with Eddie Murphy's ex-wife, Nicole Murphy.

According to a story in New York Daily News, Misick and Murphy who were this close at the opening of the Mediterranean Village at Sandals' Grande Antigua resort. Mrs. Misick did not attend.

Spies had a hard time getting any photographic evidence as the premier's bodyguard made sure there were no photos taken of the two. And he did a great job: neither WireImage, the event's official
photographer, nor Access Hollywood, who did a segment on the launch, mentioned either of them being there.

But other guests said the pair seemed especially chummy on Friday, Oct. 5, during a party at the Cricketer's Arms, a pub on the property. And some folks started whispering when friendly kisses were exchanged.

"It's funny - if you didn't know better, you would have thought they were together," says a source on the island...Lisa Raye [responed] through a rep: "Nicole is a good friend, and she and Michael were both there for an event but not together."

Honestly we don' see Lisa Raye letting go her royal marriage without a fight. And don't forget that Nicole Murphy is in a seriously committed relationship with NFLer Michael Strahan.

We will definitely be keeping you posted on this one.

Rihanna kicked out of cousin’s wedding party!

rihanna_2.jpgWow! Rihanna recently attended her cousin Nigel wedding in Barbados and reports coming out on the internet is that she was asked to leave the wedding early!

According to mediatakeout.com the trouble began almost as soon as Rihanna arrived. Reports from guests at the wedding claimed, "I was shocked when I saw what Rihanna was wearing. Every time she moved, her [breasts] looked like they were ready to come loose." The tipster added, "[The bride comes from] a very Christian family. [Rihanna] should have known better than to show up wearing such scandalous attire."

The story doesn't stop there. According to a number of eyewitnesses, Rihanna refused to eat the food offered to other guests. An insider explained that "She brought her own food and wouldn't touch anything else...Our food must not be good enough for a big star like her."

At one point in the evening, the bride's family decided that they'd had enough. As one family friend puts it, "Rihanna was taking away from the [bride and groom's] day so we thought it was best to ask her to leave. She understood and agreed."

But before leaving, one guest claims that Rihanna gave the family a piece of her mind. According to the insider, "She started arguing with [her aunt and her mother]...Even though they were in the back, you could hear Rihanna yelling at her mother." The insider added, "Her mother is a very easygoing woman, so she just stayed quiet and waited for Rihanna to calm down....If she were my daughter, someone would have had to call the police."

Shame on you Rihanna.

Late Lord Kitchener's wife ordered to surrender house to his mistress!

musiciens_kitchener.jpgBut what is really happening in the world when a mistress has more ratings than a wife?

In Trinidad a High Court judge ruled on Friday, October 26 that the wife of the late calypsonian Aldwyn Roberts, aka Lord Kitchener, must hand over their Diego Martin home to the family of Roberts's mistress.

According to the report carried in the Trinidad Express Roberts's wife, Valerie Green, said she was hurt by the decision, and said her family and the country may now be justified in saying that Kitchener was not only the Grand Master of calypso and soca, but of dishonesty and deceit.

"These people don't know how Rainorama [Roberts's house at Diego Martin] came there. Is I have it so," Green said.

She defiantly declared that she will not move out of the house, even though Justice Lennox Deyalsingh said she had to move out by the December 31. Her attorneys plan to appeal the judge's decision.

Oprah take strong actions against child molesters at her school

By: J. Koni
oprah_winfrey.jpg
Oprah Winfrey
, made a vibrant apology to the parents of students at her school in South Africa recently. The school administration is clouded with a sex-abuse scandal, which has already resulted in the dismissal of one of its dormitory matrons.

Addressing the parents, a tearful Oprah said, "I have disappointed you. I'm sorry. I am sorry." The occasion was an emergency meeting at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls.

Allegations began two weeks ago that a "dorm parent" had been accused of fondling a girl and physically and verbally abusing several others, including grabbing them about the neck, beating them and hurling them against a wall. Since these findings have been confirmed Oprah has reportedly taken full responsibility for the immoral occurrence.

The accusations came to light after one of the pupils ran away, purportedly because she couldn't stand the alleged abuse any longer. Winfrey suspended the matron and at least one other staffer. The school's principal, who the girls complained had failed to take action, was placed on paid administrative leave as detectives and Child Protection Services probe the reputed misconduct.

"I trusted her," Winfrey told the families regarding the principal. "When I appointed her, I thought she was passionate about the children of Africa. But I've been disappointed."

Winfrey, described by reporters as visibly distressed, promised the parents that those found to have committed wrongdoing would be punished. Winfrey also gave the students, whom she referred to as her "daughters," her personal telephone number and email address in the U.S. so they could get in touch with her at any time.

Why do men allow skettels to hold them?

By Rootzgirl

Rasta-Girl-Posters.jpgI give up! I have been trying to figure out what makes men tick and I now have to admit that I am nowhere close to finding out.

Who knows maybe Madness who just loves to cuss me out can actually give me an hindsight into how the male species function.

Here is my big dilemma – I am trying to figure out what would make a man who is married to a decent, hardworking woman...ambitious, sexy as hell to boot and jeopardize all that for one that's loud, brawling, non ambitious and makes no apologies for it!

Added to that, the skettel makes no secret of the fact that one man can't satisfy her so if you want her, you just have to be prepared to share...and he willingly agrees!

Seriously I am not talking about having a one slap off the skettel and then moving on. I am talking about a big grown educated, responsible man acting like an idiot and the skettel twining him around her little
finger and bragging to her friends about how she has him weak.

On top of that the skettel get too bright and start to call the house, (which the clown fool fool enough to give her his home number) and then having attitude when wife or the legit woman of the house answers.

And can you believe it when the wife questions him about the caller who dissed her, he has an attitude and actually starts to defend her!!

What is the power that these skettels have over you guys that makes you lose your senses…ditching all you have worked so hard to build up?

Let's be real here…you gonna tell me that this woman gives the wickedest slam and all that crap...so at the end of the day was it worth the breakup of your family?

In case you think this is all mumbo jumbo, I have seen professional men acting like idiots around these skettels. They jump and the poor fools asks 'how high'. They shell out money as if it's going out of style to cater to these women's needs and in return, sooner or later wifey can't take any more and she walks out.

Seriously the reason for this article came about because of a friend who allowed his marriage to fall apart over a loud, non ambitious female...who in the end when his wife left him, told him she wasn't interested in washing, cooking or any of that stuff as that's
what's wives are for! He ended up being a drunkard, lost his job and the respect of his friends.

So at the end of the day this one goes out to the guys...tell me...at the end of the day what's the real cost for a good slam?

Terry McMillan makes shocking revelations about her life with Jonathan Plummer

mcmillan_plummer.jpgOn Thursday November 15, 2007 an exclusive interview with Terry McMillan, one of the most celebrated African American writers of contemporary literature, will be posted to UNEQ Magazine.com.

Taking a pause from writing her seventh novel titled, "Getting To Happy," McMillan decided to speak out and bring closure to the vilification she has experienced by the public because of misinterpretations that surfaced during her divorce from ex-husband Jonathan Plummer. Details that have never been revealed about her relationship with the now infamous Jamaican gay man who deceptively lived a heterosexual lifestyle as her husband, will be disclosed in what has been described as a no holds barred interview.

McMillan, whose work is characterized by dominant female protagonists has written only brilliantly penned literary works from her first novel "Mama," to those that received more international attention like, "Waiting To Exhale," "Disappearing Act" and the famed "How Stella Got Her Groove Back," that actually somewhat portrays her early life with Plummer.

UNEQ Magazine reports the interview is shocking, with McMillan opening up on issues like mass amounts of money Jonathan stole from her private bank account and a discovery she stumbled upon that was so disturbing it would make any parent completely lose their mind. McMillan issued the following statement as her reasons for speaking out:

"I am not doing this to literally demonize Jonathan Plummer, but he is an evil person to have done the things he has taken pains to achieve. I loved him for years and did everything I could to help him evolve. The reason I told UNEQ Magazine so many of these previously undisclosed details is because he needs to be exposed to the community he is also pimping. He forgets that gay men have sisters and mothers. And it is because he doesn't care, just like he doesn't care if he ever goes back to Jamaica. It is the main reason he went on television to announce his homosexuality. He wanted the people in Jamaica to be embarrassed and to hate him so that in the event that our marriage were annulled - his goal was to use the self-generated hatred sure to come from Jamaica so that he would qualify for asylum and be able to stay in this country if his citizenship were revoked or in jeopardy. This is how slick he is. This was the main reason he and his attorney went on Good Morning America and leaked my so-called homophobic insults to the media and included them in court documents. But the public had no idea of this goal because the focus was on 'Terry the Homophobic Witch' and not his theft, betrayal or deception. What was it that he gave me that would make any man think that I should pay him spousal support? A grown, healthy, gay man who was all of 31 years old? I did not rent a husband. He tried to paint me as Mommie Dearest and apparently some people bought it because he did to the gay community what he had been so successfully doing to me for years and that was to play the sympathy 'I'm-the-victim' card. And he is certainly a very high-profile victim who has taken every opportunity he could to take advantage of his so-call called victimization."

"What I would really like UNEQ Magazine and members of the gay community to be very cognizant of is what is it that he has done since he came out of the closet that might benefit other gay men (and women) who are afraid to come out? What kind of platform has he chosen to draw positive attention to this problem? In every interview he's done, not once does he mention anything he's doing to help other oppressed gay men and women. Someone should ask him about this instead of always focusing on me. I've done more and shown more support for the gay community over the years than Jonathan will ever do. What is it he's doing besides getting a tell-all book published to draw attention to himself with the hopes of making money and once again all by pimping my fame? What has he done? Nothing. The gay men and women who are still suffering in Jamaica have not benefited one iota because of him. Quite the contrary. He gives gay men a bad rep as far as I can see. But he thought everybody was going to love him unconditionally. And look at what a spectacle he is making of himself and a mockery of his sexuality, all for his own personal gain. He could care less about men still in the closet."

UNEQ Magazine attempts to bridge the gap between the urban community at large and the urban gay community.

The Alliance is as strong as ever

By: Joseph Cunningham

edit_group3.jpg

The Alliance
is experiencing resurgence after the bitter split between the core of the unit and Vybz Kartel and Idonia.

However, the greatest buzz in the streets concerns the crews' new Medley, titled, "Keeping it Gangster". The medley features Bounty Killer, Mavado, Busy Signal, Wayne Marshall and Bling Dawg.

Yardflex
caught hold of Bling Dawg for a few minutes, and inquired of a few things. It was obvious that he was very quiet during the animosities surrounding Idonia and Vybz Kartel's departure.

"The truth is that people will act as they please at times. To each his own. However, The Alliance is as strong as ever and is moving to even higher heights," Bling asserted.

Bling says that throughout the years he has laid the foundation, and now he is focusing on taking his career to a higher level.

"The album is coming, titled "Dawg House" - and it will be released early next year," he revealed. He was very tight lipped on details about the album, but said it would spring surprises.

Popular songs like "How it suh Easy" and "What's Life" are currently building the right momentum before the "Dawg House opens."

Percy Sledge's love for Jamaica is warm and tender

By: Joseph Cunningham

Percy_Sledge.jpgPercy Sledge, the legendary soulful singer who has thrilled legions of fans for 41 years performed in Jamaica at the legend billed Classics in Reggae concert on October 28 and disclosed his strong feelings for the island saying his heart is 'nit' with "the land we love."

Percy told Yardflex during a very casual interview, "These days it's not so much about making hits. I have achieved so much over the years that now I am really focused on enjoying life." He said he likes watching baseball, plays golf and has good times with his twelve children.

However, Percy has made his fourth journey to the island because its people have showed him much love throughout his career. He revealed that he first came across Jamaicans when performing in England in 1966. In that year the mega-hit "When A Man Loves A Woman" was released. "I performed in England while on a tour and the Jamaicans in the crowd were so supportive. I fed off their energy for the entire set," he said.

This prompted the singer to perform in Jamaica the following year. "When I got here the love I received was overwhelming, and since then I am always happy to return because the Jamaican love is so sincere."

His hits, "Take Time To Know Her," "Warm And Tender Love" and "It Tears Me Up" are other songs that have crossed the border of race and culture in the way that only a real powerful love song can.

Further, Percy revealed that there are two things he has not achieved throughout his career, and he is about to open a new chapter that could "spell-bind" the music world again. He said, "A spiritual and a Christmas album are the things I want to achieve before I leave this word. The lord has blessed me with some of the most loyal fans in the world and so a spiritual album is how I want to say thanks to the lord."

Regarding the Christmas treat (album), he said that his fans have been requesting it for many years, and he wants to deliver an album loaded with Christmas love songs.

Without the right man no kids for Ciara

By: Jahni
Photography: Marcus Thompson

Ciara press shot.jpg

Still without the right man and looking fine, Ciara took time to unwind at her 22nd birthday party, hosted by Ayana Frazer. A star studded audience turned out at Club Runway for the New York leg of what is actually a five city birthday tour, with other regions to follow being: Miami, D.C., Bahamas and her hometown of Atlanta.

ciara_happy.jpg

Ciara walked the red carpet greeting her fans and the press in an elegant 24k gold dress by Jessica Cavalli. Excited about her upcoming movie debut in the film titled, "Mamma Wanna Sing," where she stars alongside, Ben Vereen, Patti LaBelle, Billy Zane and P. Diddys' baby momma, Kim Porter, Ciara said, "I loved working on the movie."

Ciara &BET.jpg

But when pressed about the other loves in her life and the men she is rumored to be dating Ciara was more reserved. "I want a man who will treat me right, I admire a man who has a lot of confidence," she explained, while also hinting of distant plans to become a mother. "I would love five children! But without the right man there will be no kids," she stated adamantly.

Ciara dancing.jpg

Mom hopeful recently cut dairy products out of her diet. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is top on her list of priorities. I give her the best legs in the world award.

When asked how she keeps her amazing figure she breezed, "I work out five to six times a week for over an hour. But I still enjoy dining at Cheesecake Factory, where buffalo blasts and shortcakes are my favorite orders and at Houstons Restaurant where I really enjoy the Ribeye steak. Then I have to go back in the gym the next day!"

ciara_peace out.jpg

Beeming in her golden frock, Ciara spoke of her gifts, saying this year's favorite was a certain handbag and she made no further elaborations on it. Who it came from – remains a mystery.

She spoke of recently being in Korea where her birthday celebration actually began and at the fete the Koreans threw, a fabulous photo developer was thrown in as a gift and this has been a favorite for her in the gift section as well. The gadget relieves Ciara'a recurring fear of having her image violated by public photo processors.

john2.jpg

Ciara, you are gorgeous baby! All the best with the upcoming movie and album. And thanks for having Jahni and the Yardflex crew at your party. Rasta live!

T.I. placed under house arrest despite objections

T.jpgFreed from jail but still confined by a house arrest order, rapper T.I. left a US federal court on Friday after posting a US$3million bond, AP reported. T.I. whose real name is Clifford Harris is facing weapons charges.

Conditions placed on his release include remaining at home except for court or medical reasons. According to AP, U.S. Magistrate Judge, Alan Baverman went along with the bond, that was somewhat opposed by government, on the condition that these restrictions are adhered to by T. I. Other limits to T.I.'s freedom were imposed. His passport was seized, he was ordered to refrain from owning guns and to stay clear of witnesses and informants in the case. Only his girlfriend and children have been approved to be with him. All other visitors will have to be court approved.

Arrested on October 13 for allegedly buying unregistered guns and silencers, Harris, 27, faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 fine for each charge. Judge Baverman reportedly warned the rapper against taking the conditions imposed lightly. Breaking any of them would have serious repercussions that could include receiving a larger sentence in the long run.

Next date for T.I. to "check in" with the court system is November 5.

Kareem counteracts negative forces with love

By: Joseph Cunningham

Kareem picture.jpgMavado and other entertainers who glorify gangster lifestyles are those who Kareem vows to counteract!

He is a Gospel singer who believes that "word power" should not be discredited, and so he says the messages being delivered by "gangster artistes" have been unleashing the wrong spirit on the Jamaican society.

"I want to be an agent of change through my music, promoting love, peace and joy," he said.

Kareem is convinced that music which educates is the way to go, revealing that as a younger man he admired the gangster image as well. The 21 year-old said his involvement in the music world began from as early as age 8, when he would deliver solo performances in church, and at that same age his older brother exposed him to drumming.

August Town, the Jamaican community where Kareem lives is plagued by sporadic outbursts of violence and it is no surprise that his opinion about "message" is as it is! He says he has seeing his community torn apart by poverty and its most infamous side effect, violence.

Out of a desire to see his community and the wider society become a better place, he recorded "I will Give You Love Tonight." "That song was an effort to comfort the poor and needy through my music,' he confirmed.

Beresford Hammond, Mahailia Jackson and Michael Bolton are singers who appealed to Kareem's musical taste buds as a child and they have inspired him since. Often compared to fellow young singing sensation Wayne Marshall, Kareem has own blend of style as well as songs and he is very versatile.

"I want to uphold Gospel music because when Christ left this earth he gave us a mandate to go throughout the earth, on the by-ways and the edges, teaching love, peace, long suffering, and encouraging everyone to love their neighbour as themselves," Kareem said.

Since February of this year he linked with Aramac Entertainment Agency and they have been releasing his music. As a former lead singer with the world renown Katalyst Crew, it was relatively easy for Aramac to promote his music, because Kareem was already a recognizable face and voice.

Songs popularly known from the singer are "It Nuh Easy," "Lift Up My Hands to the Father" and the very hip "Wave Your Hands."
His latest single titled, "Why" has been released recently along with a video. The song underlines some of the challenges faced by law-abiding citizens in the Jamaican inner-city. Fun in the Sun, Genesis and many other major concerts have been blessed with his talent. To see Kareem in full flight real soon, make a visit to Integration Thursday, this Thursday at the University of the West Indies, Mona.

Sizzla gets involved with Trinidad’s politics

sizzla-kalonji.jpgReggae star Sizzla Kalonji is being more vocal about Trinidad's politics than he was about the election in his own country.

In an article printed in the Trinidad and Tobago Express Sizzla says he fully endorses the move by the incumbent People's National Movement (P.N.M) to unite the nation's youth at the Beyond Youth Rally at the Queen's Park Savannah, Port of Spain, this weekend.

The artiste claimed to have no qualms about making that endorsement since it is in the best interest of the people.

Well he may have no qualms, but a quick scan at the comments at the bottom of the story showed the natives resentment to Sizzla's support.

According to one comment, "Please can we keep Jamaican musicians out of Trini politics. Next thing election time will be murder time."

Another Trini was more vocal in his criticisms, "Well, well, we really reach! The electoral process is being taken for a 'pappy-show.' Now foreign artists are being imported to "Endorse." What the hell Sizzla have to do with Trinidad and our politics? First of all he is Jamaican, let him endorse over there and besides with the quality of life in Jamaica I am pretty sure that with the amount of money he got from the P.N.M he would endorse anything. Well boy, U.N.C have
RITCHIE SPICE and P.N.M have SIZZLA this is a real "party election" huh? Who needs to discuss real issues when we could be wining and putting our lighters in the air, huh? Ridiculous, I am ashamed."

"As musicians, we are the voice of the people we are looking for the equal rights and justice for the people and I am not afraid to meet with the Minister and tell him what the poor people need to improve their lives," Sizzla said in the interview.

Tourism Minister Howard Chin Lee greeted the reggae chart-topper upon his arrival at Piarco International. Chin Lee, the chief organizer of the Beyond Youth Rally, said the initiative is about his party encouraging frugal thinking among the nation's youths.

Chin Lee said choosing Sizzla as their main act was not at all a response to the United National Congress bringing another Jamaican reggae chart-topper, Richie Spice, to their youth rally last weekend. "We have been planning this for three to four months now. What we're doing is bringing together a group of acts that the youth can relate to," Chin Lee said.

Well sah, a wonder what would have happened if Sizzla had been this active in Jamaica supporting programmes for the youths!

Early Start and Early End for “Classics in Reggae”

By: Elizabeth Smith

classics_in_paradise_flyer.jpg"Grown ups and big people say they want early evenings on the town so our production team prides itself in prompt timely concerts," Jeff Sarge told Yardflex recently. As one-third of a partnership that steers South Florida's Master P's Events Inc., Sarge spoke of his company's unique attribute and philosophy that caters to the "Golden" crowd.

With more than 25 years of individual experience in bringing Caribbean and Afro-Centric rhythms and culture to the masses, Sarge and his partners recognized a niche market that was being largely left out; those concert-goers aligning mainly with "the oldies." He said big reggae shows with stellar iconic acts would roll into major cities, begin at midnight – if patrons were lucky – and end in the wee hours before sunrise. This situation forced many of the older crowd to miss out on enjoying amazing performances form reggaes formative leaders.

Luminary artistes like Pat Kelly, Percy Sledge, Ken Booth and many more will now have the chance to truly please their life long fans. "We have worked a great deal in the past with many of the long time musical heavyweights, and our early in - early out strategy is getting rave reviews from the mature crowd," Sarge explained. He said many people comment in amazement at the promptness of his productions while welcoming the change.

Jamaican lovers of classical reggae will get a chance to live the early evening concert experience on Sunday October 28, 2007 when these "Kings of Productions" take their tactical smarts to the National Indoor Sports Center, adjacent to Jamaica's National Stadium.

"Classics in Paradise" is the name of the show planned for that evening and it will feature Percy Sledge, Leroy Sibbles, Peaches and Herb, Pat Kelly, Ken Boothe, The Cables and Fab 5 Band.

Sarge, who can be heard weekly on New Jersey's WFMU 91.1 FM and New York's WVIP 93.5 FM, said Master P's Events will sign off the year with Florida based concerts on November 17th and 18th headlining: Chuck Jackson, Ben E. King, John Holt, Half Pint and The Melodians.

Luciano soars into mainstream market with positive messages

By: Joseph Cunningham

Luciano.jpgLuciano, "The Messenger" continues to communicate principles of peace, love, human rights and justice, this time, on the continent of Africa.

Luciano will share a stage with the likes of American platinum-selling crooner, John Legend, and fellow Reggae super-stars, Bounty Killer and Mikey General.

Speaking with Yardflex, a few hours before his flight to that continent, he said, a festival is being staged by the Ghanaian Government as an ongoing effort to raise funds in support of the country's guinea worm victims.

"Promoters of the show have selected a few stars from different genres who produce music which represent the voice of the poor," the messenger revealed. The show will take place at the Independence Square in that country, on Saturday, October 27.

In recent times, Luciano has been reaping the benefits of his consistently conscious music. Earlier this month, the Order of Distinction (O.D.) was bestowed upon him by the Jamaican Government, in recognition of his service through music to the Jamaican society.

"I felt very special, realizing that I was being recognized at the same time with the likes of U-Roy, Carlene Davis and other elders who I have emulated throughout the years," Luciano said.

And, he has taken courage from the "Order," revealing that his upcoming album, "Jah is My Navigator", follows closely behind the award and will be the "icing on the cake" during this exciting period in his career. He says the album will feature a number of surprises, adding that his production on the album is at a high level that will take his career to a new frontier.

News Brief

Beenie_&-Barbee.jpgBeenie Man thriving amidst controversy
One thing we can say about Beenie Man he sure can roll with the punches. All hell seem to be breaking loose in his life on a personal level what with the tax charges, his breakup with his wife and the rumoured link with Barbee – the DJ is still forging ahead career wise.

Even while his presence was needed in court Beenie was in New York with Barbee putting the finishing touch on their 'Paddy Cake' video.

Currently he holds the number one position on Richie B's Jamaica Countdown Charts with sexy singer Barbee with their combination single 'Give It Up'.

For real it takes a really good entertainer to maintain a strong fan base in the midst of so much negativity.

Barbee also seem to be weathering the storm where their rumoured relationship is concerned as recently in New York she performed to rave response from the audience.

Mikey General gives Africa and the world messages of confidence

By: Elizabeth Smith

Mikey_General.jpg"Without confidence you're always ill-treated and never respected," Mikey General says and his 9th album, "Confidence in Self," sends this message in its title track.

Yardflex interrupted Mikey General yesterday as he was preparing to head out once again to the Motherland. Ghana is his destination this time and he will be featured at a special concert to be held there on October 27th that also has John Legend, Bounty Killa and Luciano on the bill.

Having just returned from Ethiopia and taking part in the Millennium celebrations there, Mikey General spoke passionately about this "special time" in world history, and how it correlates to his latest release. "You better have confidence in self or your choice will be defeated...I wanted to send a message to the world, because it is a special time for African people. We have entered the Ethiopian Millennium as well as the 77th anniversary of His Imperial Majesty's crowning. At such an important milestone we must reflect on how to achieve our goals despite being held back...and that can only be done with confidence in self first," he explained.

Obviously possessing oodles of confidence himself the General, who made a notable transformation of sorts some 15 years ago, explained how his crossing of paths with Luciano resulted in the blossoming of his own career. Having been boosted as one of UK's top dancehall toasters and dubplate masters, with number one hits like “Kuffen Dem” and "My Commanding Wife," Mikey General yearned for a change that would enhance his spiritual leanings. "To tell you the truth, coming back to Jamaica revived my career. Meeting up with Luciano at a time when he was just starting out and the influences of his strong faith and jovial spirit helped me to go deeper," he stated.

The rest is history. With his Xterminator camp affiliation Mikey General went full steam ahead into the conscious reggae music realm from then on - spurning out hit after hit of crucial messages for the world.

Ghanians will have the pleasure of experiencing his performance this coming weekend and everyone should grab a chance as well by picking up the album, "Confidence in Self." Riveting cuts on the album include, "Cuss Dem" as well as one of Mikey General's favorites done in collaboration with Luciano called, "Steal Away."

As he hastily made his exit from the phone to finish packing, Mikey General said, "In my music the message is clear and very important. Take for example, “Steal Away.” It says – Steal Away, Steal Away, Go take a little time to pray."

Othneil Halliburton crowned Mr. Caribbean International at Hedonism III

By: Elizabeth Smith

group_hedo3$.jpg

Hedonism III was a buzz with excitement recently with one of the hottest shows on the North Coast of Jamaica gracing its poolside stage. Entertainment Director, Nichel Lindsay said, "There's always a competition going on here and we are consistent with inviting top judges."

On this early October evening there were slightly dressed, chiseled men pouring out of the backstage woodwork, flaunting their well packed stuff for not only a room full of patrons, but also for 5 judges - there to decide who would walk away with US$500.00 plus 4 nights complementary stay at the super all-inclusive Hedonism III and the 2007 title of Mr. Caribbean International.

group_hedonism3+.jpg

It was show time just as the delectable dinner buffet was wrapping up and attendees got ready for their visual dessert. Each contestant strutted his hunky stuff down stage center, right and left to the delight of onlookers and scrutinizing eyes of expert judges.

Included in the panel were, radio and television host, Denise Hunt and Jamaican Olympian, Juliet Cuthbert. This was a clear indication that excellence was the only expectation for that entire evening.

Neither crowd nor judges were disappointed as the six-packed, sugar sweet eye candy did their thing. Introductions were first, and this is where the audience realized the massive amount of talent stored within those "build bods," who hailed from shores as far as Canada and the US.

winner_hedo3.jpgTrue pageant format was adhered to and contestants reappeared, presenting themselves: in dapper formal attire, showing their creative abilities and parading in swim trunks (or were those swim strings). The woman hosting, had an inaudible, rugged voice at times, but like many of the ladies in the room she was really taken in by the heated moments onstage and at one point uncontrollably decided to walk over to a contestant and undress him using her teeth. His garment – a red swim thong.

Audience members went wild, but did not get as out of hand as they did when the guys did their dance moves that of course included some serious bumps and grinds. It only got hotter and the air became laden with suspense, as folk chattered about who they thought was the best and should walk away as the crowned Mr. Caribbean International.

There were eliminations and then the final decision was handed in. Othneil 'Neil Prince' Haliburton from Jamaica was named winner.

It was a tough decision to make – and the now confirmed "Best Best," will sit on this Hedonism Hotty throne for this his reigning year.

Rihanna and Chris Brown in love!

chris_rihanna.jpgThe secret is out! R&B singer Chris Brown has not been officially linked with a girlfriend...well (roll the drum please) it seems he and Caribbean queen Rihanna are now a hot item.

According news surfacing on the internet a source close to Rihanna camp the two have been secretly dating for months now. But a few days ago they came out in public for the first time.

The insider revealed that, "Rihanna was performing at the House Of Blues [in Los Angeles] and Chris Brown came out to see her. He sat in the audience while she performed and the two left together and went back to his [place] - which is off Sunset Blvd and Doheny."

And there's more. According to the story in mediatakeout.com Chris Brown is wildly in love with Rihanna. The insider blabbed "Chris can't get enough of [Rihanna]...he follows her all around the
country." And a few weeks ago, he even got a similar tattoo as the Bajan beauty. The insider added, "It was his way of showing how committed he is to her."

Unfortunately for Chris, our insider claims that Rihanna doesn't feel as strongly about him. The source explained to the website, "Rihanna still dates other people. At this point in her life she's all about
having fun ... She's told Chris [Brown] that she wants to slow things down, but he's not listening."

Getting pregnant won’t keep the man

By Rootzgirl

Rasta-Girl-Posters.jpgDamn if I do and damn if I don't. People, people, please read the article carefully before you start to put words into my mouth! I am amazed at some of the comments and I have to wonder...did I imply that!

Sorry if I am stepping on a few toes in this article but I am tired of women getting pregnant in an effort to lure the man from his upfront woman.

The lengths some women will go to in competing to keep what's not hers. Every time the man's ligit woman get pregnant, the matey pregnant too! Give me a break here, what's the catch anyway. Yeah we done know the man wutless aready, but does that mean you have to be
a breeding box just to keep a hol' on him?

It's sad and sickening to see these women without pride doing everything to hang on to a man that’s not even theirs.

I am a woman, but I wish I could get inside their heads to figure out what kind of satisfaction they derive knowing they are having these men 'outside children' that the man can't even let his wife know about. He has to hide and carry the smalls come and give to you. Many times you begging him to stay over and just sleep the whole night with you...because he is trying to hide the fact from his wife that he has another woman.

Where is the satisfaction when you have two or three kids and the man can't even come to some of the big events such school plays, soccer match etc...next thing wifey gets suspicious.

What kind of victory you think you have over the wife even if you have kids for the man and his wife don't?

If you were so damn hot, how come the man not signing divorce papers and popping the question to you? Or come he is hanging on for dear life to the woman he is referring to as his 'upfront' woman and you are still perched on the sidelines?

Wake up women! Come on have some pride and give yourselves more rating than that. Just because the man wants to have his cake and eat it too doesn't mean that you have to be his meal.

Children are the most beautiful gifts that God could ever give, but don't tarnish their beauty by having this stigma hanging over their heads.

Yeah, mi back broad, suh cuss if you want, but done the baby competition ting, "pickney caan hol' man again!"

In my next article, I have a bone to pick with the
men...peace out.

Kings and Queens of the dancehall

magnumTonicWine.jpgWith the promise of a million dollars worth of cash prizes the Magnum Kings and Queens of the Dancehall competition is sure to be a great watch. The aim of the show is to uncover the best female and male dancehall artists Jamaica has to offer. On the 3rd of November recruitment will begin in Sav-La-Mar, and will then move on to Mandeville, Ocho Rios, Portmore, and finally Kingston.

Asylum Nightclub was the site of the launch recently. Zinc lined walls covered in dancehall paraphernalia, the magnum girls strutting around in the latest dancehall fashions and jerk pans cooking up a storm made this event feel like a regular street session!

Jamming to the tunes of Stone Love, guests had a fantastic time of it. MC Empress and Miss Kitty explained to the crowd all the ins and outs of the competitions. Aside from the musical performances viewers will be treated to a comedy talent search and showcases of the latest dancehall fashions.

Broadcasting of the auditions will begin in January 2008 and eliminations will been seen live between February and April. Both the crowned King and Queen will receive $500 000 as well as a production deal for release of their own single and video. Already one of dancehalls best producers, Cordel 'Scatta' Burrell, has agreed to judge the competitions. There is also a mystery judge who the sponsors are staying very tight-lipped about.

Menace the Messiah.... A musical Saviour cometh!!

By: Joseph Cunningham

MENACE.jpgIt is his most earnest desire to see the world unite, and for love and peace to be the "watch-word and song".

"Menace the Messiah" is not a menace to the society, but instead, he is a menace to all which seems contrary to the spirit of goodness. He says, "I hold a very strong stance against all the war and strife that is destroying the world at this time," and his position reflects during his performances.

Menace, whose real name is Christopher Jennis, is a very strong, conscious, energetic and powerful performer with a positive, humble countenance, and he is rapidly growing in the hearts of reggae lovers.

Born in Portmore, St. Catherine, hometown to some of Reggae's most revered stars, namely Mad Cobra and Vybz Kartel, Menace is the second of two sons for his mother Ardell Sommers and fifth of seven for father Lesford Jennis. He was not born to wealthy parents, and lacked organized fun, so a familiar pattern developed in his life at a tender age; that is, he found happiness in listening and creating music.

At age 15 Menace began realizing his musical interest. While attending Waterford High School in Portmore, he would perform on shows with great reviews. He was then drafted into a group called "The Eclipse Crew" that performed extensively island-wide between 1996-1998. In 1998 the young performer was booked to be showcased on the famed stage show "Sting".

His musical life went off the throttle in 2002 when he became a father.

In early 2005 he returned to the studios and to the stage, performing island-wide. By January 2006, Menace team up with Jason Grant, former leader of the Eclipse Crew and Kelroy Bruff, executive director and founder of REAC Music Group (REAC). "We are developing, exposing and managing Menace's career," Grant told Yardflex, adding that the time is right for Menace's positive force to go to a higher dimension.

Shows he has recently performed on include, Portmore Craft Fest, I-Wayne Lava Splash and Hellshire Beach Bash.

Listen and look out for the Menace with a positive vibration, his songs are powerful, just listen to "Life is Worth More", "Ghetto Hope", "Commandment" and "We are Poor".

“The Harder They Come" is atop soundtrack all-time list!

By: J. Koni

edit_Jimmy_Cliff_harder-they-come.jpgJimmy Cliff's, "The Harder They Come" is number three on the all-time greatest soundtrack listing!! The study was conducted by editors of Vanity Fair magazine.

The song, recorded by the Jamaican Reggae icon, shares "elite space" with Prince's "Purple Rain" which topped the list.

Next month the full list will be revealed in a one-time Conde Nast magazine, "Movies Rock," for subscribers of its 14 titles.

"Purple Rain" topped the chart even though it was described as "perhaps the best badly acted film ever," editors at Vanity Fair said.

Those Vanity Fair editors said the "Purple Rain" soundtrack was a flawless combination of "funk, R&B, pop, metal, and even psychedelia into a sound that defined the '80s."

"A Hard Day's Night" came in at No. 2, followed by "The Harder They Come," "Pulp Fiction," "The Graduate" and "Superfly." "American Graffiti" and "The Big Chill" rounded out the top 10.

"Saturday Night Fever's" soundtrack is "required listening for anyone looking to heat up the dance floor," the editors said. "The white suit? Not so much."

"Movies Rock," which will feature stories and photos of the projects, stars, directors and musicians who created the selected movies, launches ahead of a two-hour CBS broadcast of the same title in December.

Beenie Man bigged up D'Angel in Costa Rica on stage show

By Afrika Queen

edit_Beenie_Man.jpgNeither the muddy field nor rain falling down on Beenie Man's band could prevent the doctor from giving a great performance on October 20 in Costa Rica.

Surprisingly his fans are still wondering what the heck is going on between himself and D'Angel because when he drew for 'Reverse The Thing' he bigged up his estranged wife on stage.

Hmm, after all that she did to him, one would think the last thing he would want to do is send kudos to her!

Anyway, Beenie doesn't deserve any bad names cause he really mash up the stage. He even took time out to big up God as always.

After delivering a first class performance The Doctor headed for the after party, which was another drama in itself. Beenie Man put on some mad dancing on the dance floor, proving to his fans that he's really the King of the Dancehall. He enjoyed friendly rivalry with the Jamaican dancehall queen who really had the crowd going. She showed that it was her wicked moves that ruled the dance floor that night.

Things soon fell apart as the self-acclaimed king of the dancehall could not hold the very expensive liquor and was drunk as a skunk at the after party. Between drinking and smoking Beenie Man started to carry on real bad. The Doc folded his leg around an iron pipe pillar and refused to leave, at minutes to 4:00 am.

Beenie Man has left tongues wagging in more ways than one in Costa Rica as many of the sweet African princesses there are wondering if he only 'bigs' up black girls in Jamaica but when he leaves the sandy shores behind he changes his taste.

"Him did deh deh a kiss up and make show with some white/Spanish/fat and ugly B***h that nobady want down here, and there was so much black beauty's down here," one woman who observed his behavior at the after party complained.

After his fun weekend Beenie Man should be in a better frame of mind for his court case on October 23.

Keeping the Tosh flames alight

By: Elizabeth Smith

edit_peter_tosh.jpg"The inspiration is not just because of Peter Tosh, but because of how we around here [in Jamaica and the reggae world] treat our icons - we have allowed the system to kill them," says Worrell King, originator and producer of the annual Tribute to Peter Tosh.

Last Friday, the second part of that tribute blew up Independence Park in Savanna-La-Mar, causing a joyful stir, especially with the children in attendance. Many young people joined the huge crowd to honor Jamaica’s cultural and the world’s literary hero, Peter Tosh, who was violently and prematurely taken from us.

Now a free show, with stellar artistes giving their support at no cost, the concert was a follow-up to "Tribute to Peter Tosh Part I," that took the form of a symposium. Held at the University of the West Indies on Tuesday, October 16, 2007, the symposium was designed to foster a closer in depth look at Tosh and his works.

group_artiste.jpgKing described his motivation for intellectualizing the great 'Original Wailer's' accomplishments by outlining the need he recognized for the world to take a look at the cerebral Tosh. "There was more implicated than merely enjoying his great music, we had to look at the intellectual side, the philosophical side, the musical side and poetic side of Peter Tosh, and we invited scholars to deliver their findings and analyses on Tosh," he expounded.

Preserving Tosh's legacy through academic meetings and gatherings like the annual free concert beats a blank in King's view, but it still is not sufficient. "I have a vision that goes beyond the annual tribute that has been going on for 15 years. It is to see the development of a museum, a school, a book and movie – all dedicated to the life of Peter Tosh." King feels Tosh has been largely overshadowed as a "Reggae Great" and these implementations will 'preserve' this great man.

Speakers at this year's symposium included, former Finance Minister, Dr. Omar Davis and Reverend Cannon Ernle Gordon, who presented on Tosh, as he relates to Christianity. Reverend Gordon disclosed that Tosh’s song, "Creation" is now listed in the Anglican Hymn Book.

Originally a ticketed event, King made the switch to letting in everyone free after a hurricane left the annual attendees financially strapped one year. King said he received a message from God, telling him to let everyone enjoy the Tosh tribute free of cost, and he complied. His only wish is for all the artistes large and small to come forward each year in support of this special tribute.

edit_Steele3.jpgThis year the line-up of performers was amazing, with the budding Little Joe giving a clean steady show. For King the special moments came with Bushman, Steele and Luciano's performances. Meanwhile, hitmaker, Dez I Boyd was the only performer to get an encore. His song "Shake Up Yu Natty," was the crowds' request.

King was commended for his efforts and one member of the audience said it was a great feat to put on a free show of that caliber in Independence Park.

Papa San Getting Ready for Higher Heights

By: Olimatta Taal

edit_PAPA_SAN.jpgIn a time where the message in music is sometimes overshadowed by sex, violence, and money, there remain a number of artists whose main mission is to "edutain" and motivate through song like Jamaica's beloved Papa San. Riding on the success of over 30 number one singles and over 15 albums, one would wonder why the transition from secular reggae music to gospel reggae?

"I was depressed, frustrated, and confused. After the Benz, the house, the money, and the fame, I still had no peace. That's why we find artist going into drugs because they are trying to fill a void," expresses Papa San as he passionately recounts his life's transition. He continues to talk about the pain he experienced from watching 40 friends and two brothers die from gun violence.

Discussing turbulent times in his life he explains, "I was almost killed and imprisoned. I looked for protection in the gun but there was no protection. Looked for comfort in fame but I still didn't find it. I had to start over and search and then the Lord began to reach out to my heart".

edit_PAPA_SAN_2.jpg"The Lord revealed that it's not about me but it's about him and what he wants. I had the desire to go to church and talk to this pastor. I was saying to myself that God would never forgive a man like me because I sinned against God so greatly, but I never knew the love of God. As the pastor ministered to me, the truth revealed to me and I opened up to the truth of Christ," beams Papa San.

Now the world is counting down time until the release of his newest album, "Higher Heights," which will come out in March 2008 on Samba and Beloved Records. It consists of a combination of reggae, dancehall, and lovers rock flowered in messages of inspiration and motivation. Recorded with absolute love, diligence, and discipline it will take you to Higher Heights.

News Brief

edit_Whitney-Houston.jpgWhitney on top again
Whitney Houston shocked the audience of a fashion show in London when she gracefully took the stage in a white Valentino gown to introduce the final catwalk show of the night.

According to EURweb the 44-year-old singer arrived at Royal Albert Hall with her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, looking vibrant and healthy following months of treatment for a drug addiction.

Arriving on the red carpet, she said: "I know it's been said before but I want to say it again - thank you for your support and, yes, I will always love you."

Houston was a big hit as she had everyone in the audience amazed...and cheering and that included stars such as Kate Moss, Lilly allen and Naomi Campbell.

Eat your heart out Bobby Brown!

Exco Levi... Dominating Canadian Reggae Scene

By : Joseph Cunningham

Exco Levi.jpgBeing awarded the "Most Promising New Artist" and "Best New Artist" at the annual Canadian Reggae Music Awards (CRMA) is a notable accomplishment for Exco Levi and his hit song, "O CANADA".

Also known as Wayne Ford Levy, he was born in Jamaica, the son of popular reggae artist Michael Levy a.k.a. Professor Wayne. Exco grew up in church, and sang on the youth choir, where he developed his passion for music. In addition to his vocal training, he learned to play the keyboard and gained a greater understanding of harmony and composition. As a teenager, he started to embrace the music of Garnett Silk, Sizzla, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and he built his career around those icons.

"Receiving the award for the "Most Promising New artist", at the CRMAs is a great feeling of accomplishment,” he told Yardflex. The winning song "O Canada" is a tribute to his home away from home.

As his love for music grows and strengthens, he continues to work harder to expose his musical versatility. The success of "O Canada" has encouraged Exco, so do the many accolades that have come his way since he first launched into music, only in February of this year. "O Canada" is currently receiving airplay on Flow 93.5, CKLN 88.1 and CHR Y 105.5 and most other major radio stations across Canada.
In addition, he was also nominated for "Song Writer of the Year."

Exco performs solo with a Toronto based band- "The Black Eskimos" in which he sings and plays the keyboard.

"My interest in music increased while working at Stinenam Recording Studio in Jamaica. That is where I honed my skills as an audio engineer, recording in both digital and analog formats. I also worked with Terry Linen, Jah Mason, Ernest Wilson and Silver Cat at the Tripple Platinum Recording studio."

With Certificates in Broadcasting from The National Institute of Broadcasting in Toronto and The Trinidadian School of Music, Exco gained in-depth knowledge of the administrative aspects of the music industry and has developed and improved on the technological advancements that make the market so highly competitive.

With all these arsenals in tack his focus is know focused on revealing himself to the Jamaican scene. With an impressive performance at the recently held Curfest on his portfolio, he is saying, "The sky is no limit."

Exco feels, that there is a big difference between loving music and having a passion for it, he truly believes that his dedication is one factor that will help to cultivate and elevate his success.

Dreadlocked singer worships Jesus

By: Joseph Cunningham

Ziggy_Soul_ALBUM_COVER[1].JPGZiggy Soul sports dreadlocks, the main symbol of Rastafarianism, but he is a devoted Christian. What does he mean by devoted? He does not worship the Rastafarian god, but praises Jesus.

His behavioural pattern was recognized by the Jamaican society as very strange, and this resulted in various unpleasant experiences . It is arguable that Jamaica is one of the most vibrant Rastafarian communities in the world, and so when Ziggy Soul sought to settle in a Christian place of worship, he was met with fierce resistance.

"During the period when I was seeking a place of worship, there were occasions when I was attacked physically, because of my locks. Some people told me they did not want me in their church," he said.

While he acknowledged that a deadlocked person claiming to be a Christian would not have been readily accepted by Jamaicans, he was and is still adamant that the way he looks does not determine who he is.

All these negatives were ongoing while Ziggy was walking the walk and talking the Christian talk. He had established a non-profit organization in Trench Town, which served the academic and social needs of the community. "I was giving of my time as a form of worship." Undoubtedly the neglect he had been receiving from some church organizations had insulted his sincerity.

Fortunately for Ziggy, he met Pastor David Keane from Church on the Rock, who is widely known for his radical approach to the pastoral ministry. "I was living in Trench Town and Pastor Keane and his team of Evangelists came to the community to minister. Somehow he heard of my singing ability and asked for me. We met and he invited me to church."

Ziggy recalls being enrolled in Sunday School where he learned about Jesus deeply. His Gospel music career then began when famed Gospel music producer Tommy Cowan heard him singing in Sunday school. International recording artiste Carlene Davis also happened to have been in the audience, he said. They invited Ziggy to sign to their record label, "Glory Music".

The record deal took Ziggy to the forefront of Jamaican gospel music quickly, however, his new found fame was accompanied by controversy, this time with greater intensity as a public figure. "Acceptance from music patrons took a little while because they seemed uncertain what to believe about my stance regarding my locks." Nevertheless, he persevered, and today he has been widely accepted as a true Christian, especially after the release of the hit song "Sing It Out Loud". The song cemented his acceptance; the most famous line from it declaring that "Jesus Christ is King of Kings".He has since delivered the album titled, "Born Again", which featured the song "Sing It Out Loud".

It has been four years since the release of Born Again, and he is back with "Genesis", an album which is loaded with hot tracks, including "Jesus Is Trench Town", "Rescue Me", "Proverbs" and "Tell Me Who". It was produced by Tommy Cowan and features tracks with a number of his friends. My review is that this album is deep, soulful and Jamaican.

Guidance warns “The Hype” is a major distraction

By: Joseph Cunningham

Guidance.jpg"Many people get distracted by bright lights and life in the fast lane, but it is what you own that really counts." Those words could only have come from someone who is willing and equipped to give proper guidance and Guidance, the reggae singer fits the criteria.

"Love What You Got" was Guidance's 2006 hit that introduced him to mainstream reggae. The song was a feature on every reggae chart.

Well, if you thought the title of that song was derived at merely out of prudence, you are mistaken. Guidance spoke to Yardflex a few minutes before his rehearsal session for Curefest. He revealed, "The truth is that I have been a victim of the hype. I had a business and other assets which I lost because of a reckless approach to life." He then experienced challenging times that caused him to appreciate the principles of sobriety. That was how I got the concept for the song, he said.

Guidance2.jpgBorn Donovan Walker, in Majestic Gardens, a volatile Jamaican inner-city neighbourhood, Guidance said that in spite of his past errors he has always had a positive outlook, one that has always motivated him to make himself and his community better. It is then no surprise that as a child his musical influences were Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and in more recent times Garnette Silk, Capleton and Buju Banton.

Guidance is currently completing an album with the single's title, "Love What You Got," comprising 15 tracks. Songs currently building the momentum prior to the album's release are "These People are To Bad" and "Leave the 15 Year-Old Alone." A date for the album's release has not yet been confirmed.

South African Reggae Star Lucky Dube shot and killed

Lucky_Dube.jpgSouth African Reggae singer Lucky Dube was shot and killed in a carjacking attempt on Thursday night in that country.

Apparently he tried to drive away and crashed into a car and a tree, this according to police news and reports coming out of South Africa.

43 year old Dube was shot in front of his son whom he was dropping off in Johannesburg's southern Rosenttenville suburb, according to media reports posted on the internet.

Lucky Dube who many say sounds uncannily like Peter Tosh, recorded 20 albums in his career of over two decades. He was the best selling reggae singer in his country and racked up many local and international awards. In the 1980s the singer switched to reggae style of singing – as he joined the protest against South Africa's racist government.

President Thabo Mbeki along with the entire country is shocked and has reportedly called on the entire nation of South Africa, "To act together as a people to confront this terrible scourge of crime."

The insidious attack raises concerns about South Africa's hosting of the 2010 soccer World Cup. Recording an average of 50 murders daily, South Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world. Reports cited UN statistics, that state - one in three Johannesburg residents has been robbed.

Lucky Dube's forceful sound will live on through vibrant recordings such as, "Slave," "Political Games," "Respect," "Touch Your Dreams" and "Celebrate Life." At the same time fans will hold dear to their hearts – fond memories of his energy driven performances.

Signs your man's cheating

Rootzgirl

Rasta-Girl-Posters.jpgYes, I know you guys gonna cuss me out, but guess what I am looking out for my homegirls. It's time to help them see clearly, you're all not the slick players you think yourselves to be. Homegirls look out for those players!

Women, don't be caught off guard! No matter how slick men think they are, there are some dead giveaways that they are sampling the goods elsewhere. However, I have to caution – make sure you are not acting upon your paranoia and mistrust of your man. Some women need to work on their self-esteem as no matter how the man reassures, they are still convinced he is cheating, even when he is not.

This article is intended for men who think they can get away with playing around; using sweet lies to keep their partners in the dark. Still, no matter how great of an actor they are, there is no getting away from these infallible proofs. So if you don't want to be left in the dark, start paying close attention. Hopefully (if you are lucky) you will never have to see any of these dead giveaways, but if your man's roving eye is wandering then catch that cheating sucker now!

Listed below are signs you should be on the lookout for:

• Talking on the phone. Men are so predictable. You can always tell when they are talking to their buddies. The cell will ring beside you and they have no problem yapping away. But when a woman calls, you immediately know the difference, his voice lowers and suddenly the TV or radio is too loud in the room and he has to talk outside or in another room.

• Those tired 'working late' excuse. Suddenly your man who used to come home like clockwork is required to work late almost every night of the week and he has to go in on weekends too! You offer to drop him lunch at the office, being your considerate self, and he quickly brushes off the offer. When he does that, then pop in at the workplace to pay him a surprise visit, it will be interesting what you find out. You could try phoning him, but chances are he already has his best buddy covering for him.

• Can you imagine your man's going away on a trip and for the life of him he can't remember the name of the hotel, or the number of the place he will be staying. If you notice him getting annoyed at your persistent inquiries then you had better put him under close surveillance. Boyfriend’s got plans they don’t have you anywhere in them.

• Suddenly your sweet, caring, considerate man has changed before your very eyes! Things that he normally enjoyed doing with you he now finds boring; little things he found amusing are now irritants; he doesn't miss a chance to find fault with you, and he is generally being a first class pain in the you know where. Girlfriend, wake up! There is something fishy here and if it smells like it, it generally is.

• Be careful of men bearing gifts. I always find it suspicious when someone who NEVER bought you gifts during your relationship suddenly starts showering you with them. After all this time he realizes that he has a valuable woman at home? No, he has done something and his conscience is giving him hell, hence all those gifts.

• Poppy show! Your man has become a health freak before your very eyes. Once he wasn't bothered by the way he looked, now he has to go to the gym, his clothes are too tacky and he needs some hotter ones, he can’t pass the mirror without taking another glance at himself. When has he gotten so vain and obsessed with his looks? Duh! Since he has been checking out someone else.

• Watch out for those 'just good friends' excuse. Don't kid yourself that the woman will not be brazen enough to come to your home, or befriend you if she is sleeping with your man. Get your antenna up if she is seeking every excuse to talk to your man, and he is spending more time with her than you. The only reason she is being so sweet to you is to keep you off the trail.

Kimala Bennett- Making strides in a male dominated field

By: Joseph Cunningham

Kimala_Bennett2+.jpgMajor accomplishments for the 24 year-old, Kimala Bennett, has already placed her among the most recognized music directors in the Reggae industry; an arena dominated by men. She brings freshness to your screens, a freshness brought about by her creativity. Recent videos such as Cherine Anderson's "Good Love" and her collaboration with Chuck Fenda, "Coming over tonight" are videos directed by Bennett.

The daughter to internationally renown music producer Mikey Bennett, Kimala has worked alongside famed video directors and was sent to the Czech Republic to do a documentary on the famed Hype Williams, while he directed Kanye West's "Diamonds are Forever" video.

Working on a documentary about Baby Cham at the request of Atlantic Records; and the making of his MTV2 featured video, "Ghetto Story," that was done with Alicia Keys, were also big achievements.

Kimala Bennett2#.jpgKimala has recently finished her degree in Psychology with a minor in film studies at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, and is now aiming to be one of the best directors in the film fraternity. She got her first taste of directing music videos upon returning to Jamaica to do a documentary on Nanny of the Maroons, that was funded through the summer research scholarship at Mount Holyoke College. "After completing the documentary I thought it would have been a good opportunity to utilize my skills to direct a music video for my brother Nicky B. The video was an instant hit with the teenage audience in Jamaica and launched Nicky B's career in a serious way," Kimala stated.

After graduating from Mount Holyoke College, Kimala interned at HSI Productions, one of the leading Music Video and Advertising companies in Los Angeles, where she had the opportunity to work with the likes of Paul Huter, Little X and Chris Robinson. Having worked with some of the big guns in the business, Kimala said, "That was when I realised that I still had a lot to learn, but also realised that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life."

Her approach is to be creative whilst keeping in touch with reality and she revealed that whenever making a music video, documentary or any other video production, her motto is, "That it has to be believable."

Kimala is presently presently gearing-up to be on set with Hype Williams in South Africa next year for his second feature film.

The final night of Curefest exemplified the perfect show

By : Joseph Cunningham

The final night of Curefest, dubbed, the 'Longing For' concert, proved to be one that did justice to its build up, as a celebration of the rebirth of one of Reggae's favourite sons, Jah Cure. As opposed to the previous night and second event titled, 45 Cure's, the crowd was huge and festive spirit extremely high.

curefest_artistes.jpg

The moment Yardflex arrived at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose stadium, close to mid-night last Sunday, October 14, an energy was felt that is not customary so early during a Reggae show.

It was a night that defied all negative customs at high profile events in Jamaica; "word throwing and it's associates," but stayed true to that of electrifying performances. Jigsy King's run in with the police, who met and walked off with him following his spicy lyrical showdown was a slight dent in the smooth vibes.

From the early stages when MCs Jigsy of Danger Zone and Nuffy engaged the crowd with lyrics, gimmicks and antics, all present could have foretold that it would have been a night with a difference. Early performances from Jimmy Riley, I-Octane, Jah-Mel, Little Joe, Nitty Kutchie, Captain Barkey and Wickerman along with many others scored big with the patrons. Band changes were done swiftly, and so patrons never got restless.

More masters of artistic expression then began ascending the stage. Junior Reid got blood rushing harder in the venue with his actual appearance. He delivered his hits done in collaboration with United States rappers The Game and Mims. The stage was set for a massive Monday morning.

crowd.jpgArtistes like, Cecile, Queen Ifrica, Lutan Fyah, Fantan Mojah , I-Wayne and Morgan Heritage delivered their material with energy that was enough to garner good crowd responses.

Daylight soon appeared, and when Capleton made a surprise entry on stage - the first deafening crowd response was heard. He was joined by Munga Honourable who delivered, "Bad From Mi Born" and "Wine Pon it an Talk to Mi". The audience was now ready for an ultimate treat.

Bounty Killer and the Alliance then came, performed and conquered. Accompanied by Mavado, Busy Signal, Wayne Marshall, K-Queen and Bugle, the warlord had a refreshed look. Bounty delivered new sharp lyrics on stage and the audience encouraged him. The rest of the Alliance followed his example and were in a menacing mood. They delivered an explosive set.

curefest_artistes_2.jpg

Beenie Man appeared in the rising sun, claiming that he was there to set the stage for Jah Cure's arrival. That might have been a good idea, however, according to the grumbles of patrons in an earshot of Yardflex, the set was slightly dismal, and before he was done, some in the audience proceeded to boo and clap, advising him to leave the stage. In the early morn, the slightly fatigued crowd just wanted their share of The Cure.

Jah Cure then followed and he could do no wrong. It was minutes after 8:00 AM and nobody moved when he appeared in full white. All of his songs connected with the audience. Songs delivered from his new album were sung "word for word" by patrons. This was a sign that the concerns about his release from incarceration had experienced a transformation into acknowledgement of Jah Cure's good music - which is what he is really loved for.

Radio Disc Jockeys rule at 45 Cure

By: Joseph Cunningham

nikkiZ_nuffy.jpgReggae music selectors, who apply their skills mainly within the studios of radio stations, were in their element at 45 Cure, the second of three events that constitute Curefest.

It featured friendly rivalries between the most popular sound system selectors and radio disc jockeys in Jamaica.

The Yardflex team arrived at the venue shortly after mid-night, and was greeted by the sounds of Kentucky, the system that kept the vibes going until the more recognizable turntables appeared. Kentucky did a good job of keeping the then small gathering involved. Minutes before 1:00 AM evidence of the rains that had been lashing the island days before, left the impression that patrons were probably guessing whether or not the frontal troth had left the island.

MC Nuffy ascended the stage close to 1:15AM, and like a magnetic force, patrons began streaming in shortly after he began his antics, causing one early bird to ask, "A Nuffy dem did a wait pon?"

The process of digesting dancehall drama began from the very first selector. Nuffy introduced Johnny Kool, a radio jockey from Zip 103; and Johnny was not in a cool mood, as he unleashed a barrage of some of the hottest favourites in history. Sizzla, Capleton and Anthony Cruz were his most memorable selections that reminded the competition, "Dem bwoy deh nuh inna wi class."

Digital Chris from the stables of Irie FM followed, and he did a good set, ending on a high note with an exclusive collaboration that featured Jah Cure and Munga Honourable.

Black Chiney then took the event to a higher level. They displayed tremendous skill whilst selecting some songs that had already been played, still receiving strong response from the audience. The loud responses to Black Chiney made it obvious that the audience in the venue had now grown considerably.

G.I.jpgThe first casualty of the morning was a freelance sound selector called, G.I.-Joe. Adorned in an army suite, he took his "booes" bravely. It took Zip Joc Nikki Z to restore the interest of the patrons. Her criticisms of G.I. Joe brought rapturous sounds from the crowd at Pier 1. Jigsy of the Danger Zone sound delivered an energetic set, and so did DJ Liquid.

The man of the night was DJ Wayne of Irie Fm. He dismantled the competition mercilessly, assassinating every recognizable sound system and radio jock except for DJ Liquid and Nikki Z who he said were his friends. Exclusive dubs from Bounty Killer, Vybz Kartel and Mavado gave DJ Wayne the victory without a doubt; and when he was finished patrons began trickling out of the venue, seemingly convinced that none could have bettered Wayne.

Curefest 106.jpg

All who followed were in great danger of failing to connect with the audience in the aftermath of hurricane Wayne. The two closing acts, GT Taylor and Renaissance declined from responding to Wayne. They delivered their sets with reasonable success.

At the end of the event my only suggestion to the Iyah Cure production team is that they should consider making 45 Cure an official sound and have selectors "Clash."

Condoms laced with preventative sex gel to be developed

CONDOM.jpgAustralian pharmaceutical company Starpharma and SSL International, which owns the Durex condom brand, have signed an agreement to develop condoms coated with Starpharma's microbicide VivaGel, the drug maker announced on Tuesday, the AAP/Age reports.

In July, at the International AIDS Society conference in Sydney, the vaginal microbicide, VivaGel, was reported as preventing HIV and genital herpes in animal and human studies.

Designed to prevent STIs by stopping viruses from entering cells and thus avoiding infection, VivaGel's active ingredient is dendrimer, a molecule that binds itself to the viruses preventing them from infectng healthy cells. Early results from research also places VivaGel as a potent contraceptive.

US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in January 2006 granted an accelerated review of VivaGel. The agency also announced that it will become more involved in further human trials of the gel. VivaGel did not cause any harmful side effects in trials of 35 women in Australia. The University of South Florida and the University of Puerto Rico in July ran a two-week clinical trial of VivaGel that was funded by National Institutes of Health (NIH) and involved 40 sexually active, HIV-negative women between ages 18 and 24. VivaGel also has undergone testing in Kenya and still is in clinical trials there.

The companies will create a development program for the VivaGel-coated condoms and negotiate a commercial license under the agreement according to a Starpharma release. The drug company will be paid undisclosed fees under the deal, which also includes the start of regulatory and market development activities by the two companies AAP/Age reports. According to the AAP/News.com, the condoms are expected to be available worldwide in about one year.

"We are delighted to be working with SSL, whom we believe will be an excellent co-development partner for VivaGel as a condom coating," Starpharma CEO Dr. Jackie Fairley said. She added, "Our development and commercialization activities for VivaGel are gathering momentum with this SSL agreement," which is the second condom-coating deal signed by Starpharma during the past three months.

This is a much-needed option for prevention, and Farley expounded saying, "We feel the health sector has focused on finding a cure or treatment to disease, whereas we believe very strongly that prevention is a preferable option in curbing the disturbing increase in STIs in both the developed and developing worlds".

Reflections in White…an elegant start to “Curefest”

By: Elizabeth Smith

mama_jahcure.jpg

Spruced up and re-vamped, Trelawny sits pretty today with its new stadium and developing highway. In like form, Jah Cure has experienced the beginning of what can be termed his re-birth; copped with his freedom, sell out sound and most importantly oodles of adoring fans.

Dressed in full white, avid fans came out to ram the Starfish Trelawny Beach Hotel, on Jamaica's North Coast for day 1 of the long awaited "Curefest" – a rhythmic celebration of liberty. The soon to become annual reggae music fest had the hotel hopping on Friday, October 12, as they delivered top line services, delectable dishes and fine beverages to a room full of revelers who could be closely likened to floating clouds, with their white garments and genuinely ecstatic demeanor.

Purity that white denotes permeated the atmosphere, leaving joy, peace and love as foundation for one of the most enjoyable and meaningful evenings ever. Between champagne toasts, hugs, laughter, dancing and genuine good cheer - came solid entertainment organized by "Curefest's" production team of Danger Promotions, Iyah Cure Promotions and Brass Gate Promotions.

jahcure_mama_etana.jpg

Titled "Reflections," the all-inclusive celebratory event was hosted by Jah Cure who asked "strong chanting" Etana, Karen Smith, Live Wyya band, ZJ Smurf and ZJ Electra to lead the musical renditions for the evening. Unfolding in utmost style, the party was laden with elegance and charm, with its crisp white formal setting.

Jah Cure firmly announces, in his first single written while free from prison, that the day has now come that he will be free and seen. This recent release touches the soul of many, as its lyrics can be metaphorically ascribed to many ordinary situations as well as the extreme.

"Now the day has come you will see me again," also hints that that world will always be seeing Jah Cure from now on...it speaks to his ultimate reprieve.

etana_jahcure.jpg

Spoken of by fellow "all-whiters" as one of the best gatherings ever, the all white "new birth" session rocked, despite the earlier fears of heavy rain throwing a damper on the Fest. Many marvelled aloud at the miraculous change in weather, that saw almost 2 solid weeks of torrential rains ease up suddenly, only 3 hours before the inaugurating "Curefest" event. Many kept saying, "Jah Cure is surely blessed."

Close to 2:00 AM a pipe broke in a bathroom causing flooding directly outside the ongoing party. The water was quickly removed, while the celebration continued to swing with plenty dancing, hugging and best of all - laughter.

Yard News Brief

christopher-martin.jpgChristopher Martin needs to cool it.
At the 17th Annual Merritone Family Reunion held at Hedonism III in Runaway Bay, St. Ann. Christopher Martin had some folks crawling up the wall in frustration at his Saturday's performance.

One lady who attended the event to have a good time came back ranting and raving to this Yardflex reporter about Christopher Martin’s antics, "He was just full of himself. Every song he did he had to inject his name as if he is all that."

He overstayed his welcome and the poor band members seemed very frustrated.

Someone needs to tell this gentleman that he should remember where he is coming from and regain his humility and that winsome personality...or was it all an act to win the coveted first spot in the Digicel Rising Star Competition?

Happy Heroes Day - Oct 15, 2007

Jamaica celebrates yet another Heroes Day and in honour Yardflex pay tribute to the many who have laid the foundation that we can now enjoy true freedom. To the many unsung heroes whose work will not make it in the history books, to those who are still working behind the scenes making a difference in their own way.

Yardflex now take a brief look at our seven national heroes...they may be gone, but their work will be ringing out in the ages to come.

Garvey1.jpgMarcus Garvey
Marcus Mosiah Garvey stands out in history as one who was greatly committed to the concept of the Emancipation of minds. He sought the unification of all Blacks through the establishment of the United Negro Improvement Association and spoke out against economic exploitation and cultural denigration.

Jamaica's first national hero was born in Saint Ann's Bay on August17, 1887. In his youth Garvey migrated to Kingston where he worked as a printer and later published a small paper "The Watchman".
During his career Marcus Garvey traveled extensively throughout many countries observing the poor working and living conditions of black people.

In 1914 he started the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in Jamaica. The UNIA, which grew into an international organisation, encouraged self government for black people worldwide; self-help economic projects; protest against racial discrimination and cultural activities.

In 1916, Garvey went to the USA where he preached his doctrine of freedom to the oppressed blacks throughout the country. He spent many years in the United States pursuing his goal of Black Unification. However, USA officials disapproved of his activities and he was imprisoned, then deported.

Back in Jamaica in 1927, he continued his political activity forming the People's Political Party in 1929. He was unsuccessful in national elections. The world of the thirties was not ready for Marcus Garvey’s progressive ideas. He left Jamaica again, this time for England where he died in 1940. His body was brought back to Jamaica in 1964 and buried in the National Heroes Park in Kingston.

Bogle1.jpgPaul Bogle
Paul Bogle, A Baptist Deacon who hails from the Stony Gut community a few miles north of Morant Bay believed in the teachings of the Holy Bible using it to endorse the principles of charity and endurance.

Though he was generally regarded as a peaceful man who shunned violence, he was a leader and organizer; he spent time in educating and training his followers.

Poverty and injustice in the society and lack of public confidence in the central authority urged Paul Bogle to lead a protest march to the Morant Bay Court-house on October 11, 1865. In a violent confrontation with official forces that followed the march, nearly 500 people were killed and a greater number were flogged and punished before order was restored.

Paul Bogle who lived in St. Thomas was captured and hanged on October 24, 1865; but his forceful demonstration achieved it’s objectives. It paved the way for the establishment of just practices in the courts and it brought about a change in official attitude which made possible the social and economic betterment of the people.

Bustamante1.jpgAlexander Bustamante
Born Alexander Clarke in the parish of Westmoreland, he took the name Bustamante from an Iberian sea captain who befriended him in his early life. After acquiring some wealth on the American stock exchange, he returned to Jamaica in 1932 and in 1938 led the resistance to the colonial government.

When Bustamante began to make his presence felt in Jamaica, the country was still a crown colony. Under this system, the Governor had, at all times, the right to veto, which he very often exercised against the wishes of the majority.

Bustamante first impressed his name on the society by a series of letters to Jamaica's newspaper, The Gleaner and occasionally to British newspapers calling attention to the social and economic problems of the poor and underprivileged in Jamaica.
The years 1937 and 1938 brought the outbreak of widespread discontent and social unrest. In advocating the cause of the masses, Bustamante became the undisputed champion of the working class. He also confronted the power of the colonial Governor, declaring, "Long live the King! But Denham must go."

During the troublous days of 1938 the security forces were everywhere eyeball to eyeball with Bustamante and the workers. Labour unrest continued on and off.

On September 8, 1940, Bustamante was detained at Up Park Camp for alleged violation of the Defense of the Realm Act. He was released seventeen month he later. On his release, he formed the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union and the Jamaica Labour Party in 1943. He was the first Premier of Jamaica (1944-1954) and Prime Minister at independence in 1962.

On August 6, 1962 Jamaica was granted full independence. At the first session of Parliament, Bustamante received the Instruments of Independence from the Queen's representative, Princess Margaret.
In 1962 Sir Alexander Bustamante became Jamaica's first Prime Minister.

He retired from active politics in 1967. He died on August 6, 1977 at the age of 93.

Manley1.jpgNorman Washington Manley
Norman Washington Manley founded the People's National Party(PNP) which later was tied to the Trade Union Congress and the N.W. U. Together with Bustamante; their efforts resulted in the New Constitution of 1944 granting full Adult Suffrage. In 1955 Manley was elected Chief Minister. The 400 year British Rule, invoking slavery, deculturisation, uprising and bloodshed was not at an end. Norman Washington Manley was born at Roxborough, Manchester, on July 4, 1893. He was a brilliant scholar and athlete, soldier (First World War) and Lawyer.

He identified himself with the cause of the workers at the time of the labor troubles of 1938 and donated time and advocacy to the cause.

In September 1938, Manley founded the People's National Party and was elected its President annually until his retirement 31 years later.
Manley and the PNP supported the trade union movement, then led by Alexander Bustamante, while leading the demand for Universal Adult Suffrage. When Suffrage came, Manley had to wait ten years and two terms before his party was elected to office.

He was a strong advocate of the Federation of the West Indies, established in 1958, but when Sir Alexander Bustamante declared that opposition Jamaica Labor Party would take Jamaica out of the Federation, Norman Manley, already renowned for his integrity and commitment to democracy, called a referendum, unprecedented in Jamaica, to let the people decide.

Norman Manley died on September 2, 1969.

Gordon1.jpgGeorge William Gordon
George William Gordon was a free colored land owner and an associate of Bogle. Born to a slave mother and a planter father who was attorney to several sugar estates in Jamaica, he was self-educated and became a landowner in St. Thomas. Gordon entered politics to offset the government's attempts to crush the spirit of the freed people of Jamaica and again reduce them to slavery. He faced severe odds as the people whose interests he sought to
serve did not qualify to vote.

As a member of the House of Parliament, he used his position to highlight the sufferings of the people and to make a plea for changes.

He subdivided his own lands, selling farm lots to the people as cheaply as possible, and organized a marketing system through which they could sell their produce at fair prices.

Gordon urged the people to protest against and to resist the oppressive and unjust conditions under which they were forced to live.
Gordon was arrested and charged for complicity in what is now called the Morant Bay Rebellion in 1865. He was illegally tried by court martial and, inspite of a lack of evidence convicted and sentenced to death. He was executed on October 23, 1865.

The Morant Bay Rebellion and the resultant deaths of Bogle and Gordon precipitated the beginning of a new era in Jamaica’s development. The British government became compelled to make changes including outstanding reforms in education, health, local government, banking and infrastructure.

Sharpe1.jpgSam Sharpe
Sam Sharpe was the main instigator of the 1831 Slave Rebellion which began on the Kensington Estate in Saint James which was largely instrumental in bringing about the abolition of slavery.

Sharpe, an educated town slave, was a preacher and spokesman. He followed the developments of the abolition movement by reading discarded local and foreign papers and was able to advise his followers.

Because of his intelligence and leadership qualities, Sam Sharpe became "daddy" or leader of the native Baptist in Montego Bay. Religious meetings were the only permissible forms of organized activities for the slaves. Sam Sharpe was able to communicate his concerns and encourage political thought concerning events in England which affected the slaves and Jamaica.

Sam evolved a plan of passive resistance in 1831, by which the slaves would refuse to work on Christmas Day of 1831 and afterwards, unless their grievances concerning better treatment and the consideration of freedom were accepted by the state owners and managers.

The Rebellion started on December 28 and lasted 8 days. Sam Sharpe was eventually captured and hung at the Parade in Montego Bay (now renamed Sam Sharpe Square).

On August 28, 1833 slavery was abolished and the System of Apprenticeship instituted, allowing for the total freedom of slaves in the next 4-6 years.

Nanny1.jpgNanny of the Maroons
Nanny of the Maroons stands out in history as the only female among Jamaica’s national heroes. She possessed that fierce fighting spirit generally associated with the courage of men.
In fact, Nanny is described as a fearless Asante warrior who used militarist techniques to fool and beguile the English.

Nanny was a leader of the Maroons at the beginning of the 18th. Century. She was known by both the Maroons and the British settlers as an outstanding military leader who became, in her lifetime and after, a symbol of unity and strength for her people during times of
crisis.

Both legends and documents refer to her as having exceptional leadership qualities. She was a small wiry woman with piercing eyes. Her influence over the Maroons was so strong that it seemed to be supernatural and was said to be connected to her powers of obeah. She was particularly skilled in organising the guerrilla warfare carried out by the Eastern Maroons to keep away the British troops who attempted to penetrate the mountains to overpower them.

Like the heroes of the pre Independence era, Nanny too met her untimely death at theinstigation of the English sometime around 1734. Yet, the spirit of Nanny of the Maroons remains today as a symbol of that indomitable desire that will never yield to captivity.

foxybrown3.jpgWhat's wrong with Foxy Brown!
Foxy Brown who is currently serving time at Rikers Island prison missed a court hearing in Brooklyn because she refused to get on the bus. Not once but all of three times!

The reasons – her hair and make-up weren't done, she was hungry and the final time she just plain refused!

Just what in blazes is going on here? Who is really in charge...when do prisoners get a choice in these matters? Well it seems that Foxy is allowed Diva like behaviour as far as those warders are concerned.

The judge has since set a new hearing date for October 16 and if Little Miss Tantrum Thrower doesn't get on the bus this time an order will be issued forcing her to.

T.I. Set Up

By Olimatta Taal

T.jpgFree T.I.!!! were the words expressed by a number of artist and host at the BET's 2nd Annual Hip-Hop awards on Saturday, October 13th, as it was evident that he was not there to pick up his award nor perform.

The whole evening there were speculations about why T.I. had been arrested. According to sources, T.I. was arrested at Walgreens by federal agents on charges stemming from an alleged firearms purchase.

Special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives arrived at T.I.'s College Park residence in Atlanta with a federal search warrant. These agents were seen carrying boxes of evidence but it's not clear whether weapons were in the box that T.I. purchased.

T.I. claims his innocence and that the charges against him are false. Rumors have been circulating that T.I.'s body guard set him up and cut a deal with the feds. According to T.I.'s friend, money was given to the bodyguard as an advance pay.

The rapper claims that he will not take responsibility for anything that the bodyguard bought with the money, including gun's, drugs, or formula for this children.

No more faking it!

By: Rootzgirl

Rasta-Girl-Posters.jpgAdmit it women, many of you don't enjoy sex with your mates as you would like and you are just enduring it because you don't have the nerve to tell him he does absolutely nothing for you! But how long can you stay in that relationship looking into the ceiling every time he climbs atop you? Trust me, that am not a healthy way to live, and it certainly offers you little pleasure.

Yeah, yeah, you can talk, so what can I do about it, he is a great guy otherwise and he is truly caring and he makes me feel like a million bucks (just not in the bedroom). Should I walk away from him when I can always pleasure myself later by masturbating?

We are not saying you should walk away from your man, but you don't have to 'endure' either. It's time to address that all important area in your relationship. If the guy is as great as you think then he won't mind you having a heart-to-heart with him right? Remember though that he is a man and therefore his emotions are fragile. Don't just blurt out that you have been pretending all along. Just tell him that you have some great ideas for making sex more enjoyable for both of you.

Maybe one of the reasons you have been so unaffected by his lovemaking is that he is not getting to the core of you. You have masturbated and even if you have not been so adventurous, you still know your body more than he ever will. So here are some tips that might make love making more enjoyable for you.

Invite your man to watch you masturbate. He should learn a thing or two watching your expression as you touch certain areas of your body and if he doesn't get the point, talk to him as you go along. Tell him exactly what it does for you when he touches the clitoris, or anywhere that really excites you. You could tell him that you love it when it is touched a certain way (of course, you will be demonstrating this as you go along!). Note, this is only for those who are comfortable with their man as well as their
bodies!

Just to ensure that he doesn't think you have a problem with his lovemaking, ask him if he has any preferences; or if there is something you can do to make sex more enjoyable for him. Then you can in turn tell him your preferences and what really turns you on.

The next time you make love, take it step by step. Tell him you would like to try something new. Start off by just kissing, playing with each other, exploring your bodies with your lips and hands. Don't rush into penetration. You would be amazed how turned on you can get by heavy petting. Trading light kisses, sucking each other's nipples, playful bites, you know the drift...just enjoy the build up.

By now you must be wet and ready for that final step and if you aren't, continue petting until you think you are. Some positions do little for you, so if the one he is doing doesn't work, tell him! If you like it hard and fast, don't be afraid to request it. If you prefer the slow, leisurely strokes, then tell him too. Whatever works for you, be open about it. It is your life and you should enjoy it.

Too many women are suffering in silence as they think it is not 'proper' to talk about such issues. There is enough stress in life as it is, so don't make a martyr out of yourself. In the long run, your man will appreciate your honesty as the experience will be even better for him too. Who knows, he might have been having a problem with you pleasuring him and your candidness opened the door to a fulfilling experience for both of you.

Beenie Man was never sued by church for video footage

By: Joseph Cunningham

beenieman_rastingle.jpgA hearing in the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon revealed that dancehall superstar Moses Davies, more popularly known as Beenie Man was never sued by the St. Andrew Parish Church located in Jamaica.

"The real purpose of the hearing was to ensure that the controversial footage in the video was handed over to the courts and as such alleviate any possibility of it being broadcast" explained Danielle Desulme, producer of the footage in the video titled "These Streets." "That is what happened and the issue is now resolved," she expounded.

Controversy has abounded since the St. Andrew Parish Church filed an injunction barring the broadcast of footage in the video which had been shot at a grave yard on the church compound. According to Desulme, the church had issues with the footage being aired after they had made the initial injunction. However, she explained that, "The real cause was not that the video production team had ignored the churches request, but instead it was that neither Beenie Man nor persons close to him had received a copy of the injunction on time, neither were they informed of the injunction at that point. It was a case of miscommunication on our part."

oct_11 019 (2).jpgRas Tingle, the video director later told Yardflex that he had tried to get in touch with authorities at the church but was unsuccessful. "I tried to get in touch with Major Serranno Kittson, a member of the board of executives on the Friday, which was the day before the deadline for the video to be shot. I did not get through to him and at that stage we were pressed for time."

Tingle stated that he had no intention to desecrate the noble institution, and had actually developed a concept to display statistics of youths who die because of violence. He said it was thought that having a familiar grave yard in the background would have added a very effective emotional connection with viewers.

Regardless, Desulme views the incident as a lesson learnt, and apologizes for any discomforts caused.

2face Idibia suffers third violent attack in 3 years

2_Face.jpg2face Idibia whose real name is Innocent Ujah Idibia was reportedly shot by unknown assailants on Thursday past in Nigeria. The 32 year old hit maker whose famous single, "African Queen" has taken the world by storm, was taken to hospital in Lagos where he is now recovering.

According to eyewitness reports, the incident occurred while 2face Idibia was en route to his FESTAC Town, Lagos home from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport. Around 3 gunmen approached the Honda vehicle the singer was in and ordered the occupants to open the doors. The witness reportedly said that it was while opening the car door that 2face Idibia was shot. This was his first time back home since winning the MOBO award on September 19.

A laptop computer that rested on his lap, minimized the impact of the bullet, and the singer bravely yelled for all other passengers in the vehicle to "Run run!" The driver of the Honda told of Idibia's bravery and also of his own injury of a gunshot to the arm.

Passers-by intervened and helped the wounded to the hospital in a van. They got to Cedar Hospital from the airport expressway, where Idibia was operated on at 7am the following morning. His condition has been confirmed as not being critical

Dr. Emeka Onourah said in a report, "He's responding to treatment. He has 22 pellets in his thigh, because it was a local gun. But we've been able to handle the situation. We've stopped the bleeding too. What remains is to make sure there’s no infection, and we create a way for the pellets to expel themselves." The doctor also refuted rumors about the singer being flown abroad for treatment.

On Friday Idibia was slated to perform in Ghana for a concert, but his doctors say he will be unable to perform anywhere for at least another 2 weeks. The singer, who was also viciously attacked by robbers in January 2005 as well as in December 2006, is reportedly doing well.

'Vegas Must Come A Road' song almost proved Prophetic.

mr_vegas.jpg
'Vegas' song that has been lately released 'Must Come A Road' almost proved prophetic Tuesday October 10 in Fort Lauderdale while on a leg of his tour.

The singjay who was being transported by the promoter who had that leg of the tour found himself under close scrutiny by a black American Sheriff. A thorough search of the Benz uncovered that not only was it reported stolen, but a gun was also discovered in it! According to reports coming from sources close to Vegas, he saw his whole life flashed in front of him. Fortunately for him the American sheriff recognised the singjay and he escaped being arrested with the
other occupants of the car.

Also traveling in the vehicle was selector Hotterball who too escaped being arrested. Whew, talk about a close call!

Women don't be fooled

By Rootzgirl

The time has come to call a spade a spade and present women with some real home truths. I am tired of the many intelligent, independent women out there who are hanging on to these men, washing, cooking, cleaning and treating them like kings, clinging to the hope that one day they will marry them.

Grow up! Take the advise of my dearly departed grandmother, "if a man have cow a him yard, him doh need to buy milk!" In case you can’
't figure out what she means let me put it in blunt terms. You are home giving the man everything he needs. He has a ready punash, someone to
cook his meals, take care of his home and in some cases his children...hat hasn't he got that the married man has?

Absolutely nothing! The only difference is that one woman is wearing a ring and the other is offering all these services without any recognition. I am tired of women tying themselves down with men year after year while he feeds her one excuse after another promising that "as soon as he pays off his loans" or "when he is more financially secure" or the ultimate "he isn't ready yet."

Now hold on a minute something just ain't right with this picture. You are telling me that finances isn't a problem to have you living with him, he is ready to have you living and doing wifely duties in the home, but when it comes to making a lady out of you there are too many obstacles in the way?

Women, it's time to be smart. I have heard too many stories of you wasting your youthful years with men only to be tossed aside quite ruthlessly for some 'fresh blood'.

Just think if you had called a spade a spade and demanded his intentions you could have made an informed decision a long time ago and make way for someone who would have really appreciated you.

Chu, don't let no man tie you down like cow and then butcher you when you have served your purposes.

If I carried out a survey throughout this country I would not be able to count the number of women living with men and still waiting for that precious ring.

My heart aches for some who are waiting to "go into church" but the dang stubborn man can't make up his mind whether he wants to marry her or not.

In closing I have one challenge for my lady friends you need to give these men a kick in the right direction. If he is not ready for commitment then you know he just wants to have his cake and eat it too...honey in his case love don't cost a thing...make him
pay!

Joe Gibbs Reunites with Dennis Brown & The Professionals

dbrown.jpgThe world's love affair with Dennis Brown and Joe Gibbs gets a boost with the re-release of the Crown Prince's classic roots album, "Visions of Dennis Brown" and the innovative dub collection, "African Dub All Mighty – Chapters 1 –4" from Gibbs, the legendary reggae producer. As part of the 17 North Street imprint's "Reggae Rewind" series, these re-releases join the celebration of music recorded at Joe Gibbs famed studio.

Launched in 2007 by VP Records, the 17 North Parade imprint pays homage to the historic location of Randy's Record Mart, the premier recording studio and record shop in Kingston, and the Mecca for Reggae music between the late 60s and 70's – an era strongly represented in both re-releases.

"Vision" will be tweaked, especially for the "Reggae Rewind" series, with special extended versions of songs like, "Love Me Always," "Stay At Home," "Say What You Say” and "Repartriation." Recognized globally as one of Dennis Brown's best, the album is the biggest of his career and was instrumental in helping to establish the Joe Gibbs Studio as a dominant recording house in the 70s.

Reggae's finest moments are re-visited with the 4 album set, "African Dub All Mighty- Chapters 1-4". Gibbs and his studio musician collective, known as "The Professionals" (including: Sly Dunbar, Lloyd Parks, Bobby Ellis and Tommy McCook), churn out the classic rhythms of Studio One and Treasure Isle labels. With Errol Thompson as master engineer, each album encapsulates the rhythms and melodies of the late 60's and 70's, updated in a 'rockers' style.

Thompson's inventive engineering techniques, sent dub soaring to higher heights during the 60s and 70s and his innovative effects on songs like, "My Best Dub," "African Dub," "Lime Key Rock" and "Angola Crisis," a remake of "I'm Still in Love" by Alton Ellis, that would be sampled by "Sean Paul and featured on his Grammy Award winning album, "Dutty Rock," are highlights.

17 North Parade invites you to join them where it all started.

Yardflex News Brief

macka-diamond-.jpgMacka Diamond and her publicist Ray Alexander are at odds!!!

Rumour has it that the two have severed ties. However, Ray Alexander says he has no idea what's happening because he hasn't seen Macka Diamond since she returned from Canada some three weeks ago.

He added that the Macka, who is reported to be doing her own booking, has not yet made it official that their working relationship is a thing of the past.

Attempts to get a comment from Macka Diamond were unsuccessful.

Ray Alexander has been Macka Diamond's publicist/booking agent for almost 3 years.

A who really write Macka Diamond book Bun Him?

Ever since the female DJ launched her novel Bun Him tongues have been wagging left, right and center about who really wrote the book. Some women while waiting in line at a popular bank had a field day speculating on the real author, "Yuh can stay dere meck dem tun yuh inna idiot, yuh believe a she really write deh book deh?"

"No sah, somebody ghost write it..." was the comment
from the other woman. This YardFlex reporter was on hand at a popular dance and again that was the topic under discussion with the overwhelming consensus being that someone else wrote the book. Well...all we can say is whether it was written by her
or not...the book a gwaan!

More Macka Passa Passa

Who is Macka Diamond really seeing? Just who is her upfront man? Well those questions cannot easily be answered as word is that she is along with Panther from Black Cat but then again, we hear that she is chasing "a young little boy dancer" so...stay tuned, we might just be able to solve this puzzle soon for you.

ja_cure.jpgJah Cure's camp sent out a strong statement denying allegations published on femalefirst.co.uk, that claim The Cure has been banned from visiting the UK where he is slated to perform this month.

According to information on femalefirst.co.uk the singer was denied entry on the basis of his conviction. However, Danger Zone Records said yesterday, "We are aware that there have been circulations on the Internet and other media that Jah Cure has been banned from Britain. We would like to advise that the British authorities have communicated no such ban. It is a fact however, that Jah Cure has procured a work permit for the UK and is now in the process of securing a UK visa, which is a separate application process, but no determination has yet been made on the issue. Until such a determination is made, we find it irresponsible that anyone would wish to purvey such erroneous statements." .

Jah Cure was released in July after serving eight years of a 12 year sentence on rape and robbery charges.

Jah Cure facing resistance in Europe

jahcure_yardflex.jpgHot on the heels of the promotion surrounding Jah Cure's British tour comes the news that a bitter row has broken out over the expected British tour of one of the world’s acclaimed reggae stars. In a story printed in the British Observer women's rights groups have expressed anger at the way that Cure - real name Siccature Alcock - has reassumed his celebrity status just months after being released.

According to the report - The Voice, the newspaper for Britain's black community, received complaints after it carried adverts for the tour. Campaigner Paulette Coombs urged people to protest outside Cure's tour venues, while others have demanded he donates some of the millions of pounds he is expected to make from his music to rape victims' charities. 'He is able to move on with his life,' Coombs told the newspaper. "Who cares about the young woman he raped?"

The victim, Suzanne Ferguson, who waived her anonymity to speak out after she heard Cure was due for release, told the Jamaican press last year: "Every time there is a lot of publicity about Jah Cure, I have even more flashbacks. Sometimes I am so afraid to leave my house. It seems to me that entertainers are more valued than everybody else in Jamaica and, as a woman, I feel seriously undervalued." She has claimed she was offered money by Cure's supporters to retract her claims.

There is hope for The Cure as other women's groups are reluctant to join the protest. "Jah Cure was not convicted by a jury and there were serious doubts about his conviction," said Cristel Amiss, coordinator of the Black Women's Rape Action Project, based in north London. "He has served eight years in prison. Those who call for a boycott of his tour are losing sight of the real issue, which is that only about 5.6 per cent of reported rapes result in a conviction. They are helping to perpetuate the myth of the rapist as a dark stranger."

Meanwhile, Jah Cure has been lauded by international groups as a role model for prisoners and has openly declared his desire to impact positively on recidivism rates and rehabilitation on a whole.

Dez I Boyd Donates Bags, Books and Pencils to Schools

Story and Photography By: Alan Lewin

Dezi_Boyd4.jpgNew creation recording artiste, Desmond Boyd, more popularly known as Dez I Boyd, went on a promotional tour of Clarendon and Manchester on October 4, distributing several school supplies to children at May Pen Primary, Toll Gate All Age and Harmons Primary Schools. Dez I first visited the May Pen Primary School where he met with the principal Mrs. Saidie Comrie and other guidance counselors including his own sister, Cecile Boyd-Forbes who is also a teacher at the school.

Some of the items presented to the teachers and students were knapsack bags that flaunt Dez I's printed image on them, pencils, pens, notepads and stickers of Dez I Boyd's image. The entourage, which included his publicist, Bridgette Anderson, then journeyed to the Toll Gate All Age where they presented the same items at that school.

His final visit took him to his alma mater, Harmons Primary in Manchester. At Harmons, he received a warm welcome by the teachers, students, citizens and auxiliary staff. At Harmons Primary, he played games and sang his monster hit song, "Shake Up Yu Natty." In interacting with the very receptive audience at Harmons, Dez I asked some of the students to shake up their heads as if they were shaking their Natty Dread Locks. His including that bit of movement, went over very well. The children had the chance to participate in a song and dance contest for which winners were rewarded with a knapsack.

Dezi_Boyd.jpg

From here it's on to Curefest, which is Dez I's next engagement and it is scheduled for October 12-14, 2007. He is slated to perform on Sunday Night at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium alongside Jah Cure, Tarrus Riley, Morgan Heritage, Beenie Man, Mavado, Spragga Benz, Mackie Conscious, Shano, Mr. Easy, Sizzla, Cocoa Tea, Hero, Mr. Peppa and others.

Dezi_Boyd_5.jpg

At the moment, Dez I's two popular songs, "Shake your Natty" and "Essences," are favorites and in rotation on many airwaves.

UNPROTECTED SEX IS A RISK...

By: Amanda Spence

aids_logo.jpgThe onus is on each individual to minimize chances of contracting diseases like HIV/AIDS, by having protected sex unless absolutely sure of their partner's status – through testing.

Today a sad story (sad for both accused and alleged victims)emerged. It speaks of a 22 year old Miami Club Promoter, Elidor Kersaint, who has been in prison since June for the crime of having unprotected sex while knowing he is infected with HIV. Recently more women have come forward to bring evidence against Kersaint who was born to an HIV + mother and has reportedly been infected all his life.

The question posed in a report is, what deep pain caused Kersaint's insane denial...how was he counseled and prepared from childhood to live with his disease...and most importantly – how many other Kersaints are being ignored. How do we prepare our world so people living with HIV/AIDS (especially youth who contracted this disease from birth – through no action of their own) feel free to disclose without negative repercussions.

While criminalisation of people living with HIV has become a much sought after 'prevention tool,' the argument brought forward by advocates living with HIV is: "Don’t Blame People With HIV/AIDS! You smoke cigarettes – you can get cancer...what part of YOU HAVE UNPROTECTED SEX...YOU CAN GET HIV/AIDS – doesn't everybody understand?"

Miami police are urging anyone who had relations with Kersaint to see a doctor then call police and Global HIV Advocates say "Wake up world – the majority of those who are actually HIV+ do not know their status – so do not have unprotected sex at any time with anyone – unless...you test first."

marion-jones.jpgFive medals won by American sprinter Marion Jones at the 2000 Sydney Olympics may be in jeopardy, following the medallist's admitting to taking performance enhancing steroids before those games. Jones has reportedly admitted taking "the clear" for two years, beginning in 1999, and that she was given doses of it by her former coach Trevor Graham, who told her it was flaxseed oil and added that it was to be kept a secret between them, reports the Washington Post.

"The clear" is a performance-enhancing drug Linked to, the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, (BALCO). BALCO lab is now the center of a US federal steroids investigation. Jones denied steroid use before now – and even lied to federal agents about it, citing fear and panic set in upon recognizing "the clear" as the supposed "flaxseed supplement" and realizing she had been duped all these years by Graham.

The Post reported, Jones pleaded guilty in New York yesterday to two counts of lying to federal agents about her drug use and an unrelated financial matter.

Hi Marion – Yardflex wonders if you never thought about buying your own flaxseed oil one day and checking the difference...

In the song, Da'Ville sings about the hardship a lot of people go through, having nowhere to sleep and nothing to eat while those who are in a better position to help, ignore the less fortunate. The song also speaks in volumes about family values, while at the same time warning the 'haves' that material things they have today could be taken away tomorrow.

Foreigner fights for credit as originator of Electric Slide...Going Crazy over it?

By: Joseph Cunningham

Marcia_griffiths.jpg

The Electric Slide is one of the biggest cross-over hits in the history of the Reggae genre, and music lovers across the world have embraced it as a party song. Marcia Griffiths, former backup vocalist for Bob Marley delivered the song that was written by Bunny Wailer, who in tandem with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh became famous as the "The Wailers."

According to Marcia, "There was never an official dance move that accompanied the song. Dancers in Jamaica developed various body movements in the clubs." One of the many dances became extremely popular and was accepted as the official dance.

The credit was claimed by Ric Silver, a Caucasian man, who has been very possessive! He insists that when done correctly the dance is comprised of 22 steps and not 18 as is practiced by many.

Websites all over the world have been forced to remove their videotapes of the dance, since the dance has been copyrighted by Silver and restricted. Further, he has threatened to sue anyone who continues to post videotapes teaching the erroneous version of the dance. Silver says he was tapped by the owner of a club in 1976 to create a dance that would revive a Manhattan nightspot called "Beef Steak Charlie's." He said he was a professional dancer at the time who had worked with the likes of Martha Graham and Alvin Ailey, and so went home and blew the dust off the record that had been given to him by a DJ friend in New York a few years earlier.

The 1976 argument is where the drama begins, because Bunny Wailer the songwriter and Marcia Griffiths say the song was released in 1982! Marcia Griffiths is asking,"How can this man claim to have created the dance six years before the song was released?" She revealed that she had received a call from Silver a few years ago to team up for a lawsuit against Oprah Winfrey who he said he observed giving a lesson to her live audience without his permission. Marcia said she felt Silver was a strange guy from since then.

Silver has been making serious threats and claims, while all available industry records and history, supports a 1982 release!

Reggaeton takes centre stage in Jennifer Lopez music movie

By: J. Koni

j_lo_&_omarion.jpgJennifer Lopez has produced a movie starred by current R&B hotshot Omarion, which infuses rap, reggae, dancehall and bomba; the combination which is known to create the reggaeton sound.

The movie titled, "Feel the Noise" infuses the scenes with a vibrant music in the background. The story features a youth (Omarion) who has ambitions of becoming a rap star and is faced with adversity. In the opening scene, he ends up in jail and is then sent to Puerto Rico to where his father lives; a man he does not know. He's dealing with a lot of issues inside of him, but finds solace in this new sound, reggaeton.

The movie is one that will appeal to young people especially and Omarion hopes it will have the impact intended. "No matter what barriers there are and no matter what's in front of you, you conquer your dreams! I want young people and everyone to take that from this, because sometimes people feel like it's too late. And it's never too late to follow your dreams," he told reporters.

In related news, the singer is about to release "The Face Off" album featuring fellow young sensation, Bow Wow. "We went on four 'sold out' tours back-to-back, before we did 'Let Me Hold You,' which was a Top Five single. We just feel like this is a great opportunity for our fans to merge. We both could’ve done our own solo albums, but we wanted to do something different and exciting."

Sean Paul collaboration- “Baby Boy” before the courts

By: J. Koni

seanpaul_beyonce.jpg"Baby Boy," a 'musical anthem,' which arguably helped boost the superstardom of Jamaican Reggae singer Sean Paul, is currently the talking point the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The court received a copyright infringement case yesterday filed by a woman claiming that Beyonce Knowles' 2003 hit featuring Sean Paul, illegally uses lyrics from her song "Got a Little Bit of Love for You."

Jennifer Armour of Shakopee, Minnesota had a similar lawsuit dismissed by a Houston judge previously, but it is reported that she feels her case should be heard by a jury, and hence proceeded to appeal further.

Beyonce did not attend Wednesday's hearing, which took place before a three-judge panel.

Dana Kirk, Armour's attorney told the judges that an expert analyzed Armour's slow and melodic version alongside Knowles' song featuring Sean and that the two are substantially similar.

However, Knowles representative, Cynthia Arato said the standard for copyright cases is what an ordinary person hears, not an expert's analysis.

The judge who heard the case in Houston last year had ruled the two songs were "substantially dissimilar."

Dez I kept people shaking and moving at Ocho's Juicilicious

By: Elizabeth Smith
Photography By: Omar Burgess

Dez I_1.jpg

Dez I tore up the place on Sunday, September 30 at Club Amnesia in Ocho Rios. It was the traditional Sunday night dancehall party that doubles as a dance competition and features upcoming and established artistes. Sunday's "Juicilicious" party was hosted by Stacious the wicked DJ and it was presented in collaboration with Juice TV and Rodeo Energy Drink.

'Working' his new album, "Give Thanks For Life," Dez I stole the show with his strong and captivating performance. His fast paced calypso number went over very well with the audience as did the well known numbers, "She Got It," "Essence" and "Shake Up Yu Natty."

Lil' Joe, well known for his hit single, "Not Good At All," was also able to get the audience moving and grooving. Singing his popular single, that speaks to what's good about a bad man, put club patrons where Little Joe wanted them, and the rest was smooth sailing, as the 'fresh yet seasoned' young lyrical whiz kept it real and got resounding "Forwards!"

Cashew Man and Junior Tiger were other performers featured that night and they were also crowd pleasers – as were the many dancers on hand for the popular competition.

The Doctor says sorry to Christians and Church

Beenieman.jpgPopular dancehall entertainer Moses 'Beenie Man' Davis sent out his humble public apologies yesterday, to the members of the St. Andrew Parish Church, the Christian fraternity, and relatives of deceased whose remains are interred in the church's cemetery.

This follows an injunction taken out by church lawyers on September 28, barring defendants, Beenie Man and his production team from publishing, broadcasting or releasing a video filmed at the cemetery, for publication or broadcast in any audiovisual media, the music video films or other visual images recorded by said production team.

The entertainer said he is emphatically sorry about the misunderstanding that has arisen and wants the Christian fraternity, who are incensed about the videotaping, to know that he would never knowingly do anything demeaning to offend Christian or any other doctrine.

Not seeking and acquiring permission to film at the cemetery, is what got Beenie Man and crew in the hot water to begin with. The defendants are barred by the courts from showing the video or any parts of it that have aspects of the Church yard and cemetery depicted, for a period of 28 days. Every part of the video has been not only halted for publication but also ordered turned over to the court until an October 11th Supreme Court hearing.

Beenie Man said, he along with the video crew takes full responsibility for their actions and regret not getting the necessary permission. His team agreed to edit the video, pulling out all offensive scenes once they learned of the injunction's stipulations. This did not stop the court from coming down hard on the defendants.

Unfortunately, after the injunction was filed on September 28, miscommunication between, the hosts of the popular entertainment programme ER that airs on TVJ and Beenie Man's production team, resulted in the video being shown on that Friday night.

Prior to the airing attempts were made to remove sections of the footage showing the church and the tombstones, but at the time a video editor was unavailable.

The video was recorded for Beenie Man's single 'Mama's Cry/Gangsta's Prayer' and is a depiction of the crime and violence now taking place in the society. Beenie Man said he was tired of seeing how many people and friends of his are ending up in the grave and it is his way of showing his condemnation of the murders and violence.

Kevin Federline gets temporary custody in LA courts

By: Amanda Spence

britneyspears.jpgOn Monday, Britney Spears temporarily lost custody of her two sons, Sean Preston, 2 and Jayden James, 1 after a court battle with Kevin Federline, her ex-husband. Judicial sources reportedly quoted court documents that outlined, Federline "is to retain physical custody of the minor children on Wednesday October 3, 2007 at 12:00pm until further order of the court."

Spears, 25 and Federline, 29, finalized their divorce at the end of July, but were experiencing difficulties with the arrangements made for temporary shared custody of their sons with allegations floating around the Federline camp that Spears was an unfit mother. The singer and dancer who recently had a month-old contract cancelled with her management company following the hugely criticized public display at the MTV Music Video Awards show, has been making attempts to rebuild her career and salvage her image. All this in the lead up to her November album release; however, this new twist in her step puts a damper on her new strides.

A former Spears bodyguard complained earlier this month to court officials that he was concerned for the children's welfare and mentioned the nudity and drug use of their mom. Spears was ordered to undergo random drug testing in September following a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge's ruling. Court documents reportedly show that Judge Scott Gordon called Spears a habitual, frequent and continuous user of controlled substances, according to evidence presented in a closed hearing.

Tuesday's transcripts of court proceedings were reportedly sealed, revealing no details about the court's change in custody order giving Federline sole rights until the courts revisit this. The couple were given an earlier court order, restraining them from making derogatory comments about each other. Judge Gordon ordered Sears to see a therapist once a week as well as to hire a parenting coach and sign up for the Parenting Without Conflict Program.

Incarcerated Foxy Brown links up with Mavado

movado_foxy.jpgHaving only been inconvenienced recently in Canada and not jacked up, stripped or mobbed, as is the popular opinion – 'Gangsta for Life,' Mavado was back in studio last week to record a track for incarcerated rapper, Foxy Brown's upcoming album, set to drop in November. It is official, that Mavado’s possessions were stolen by unscrupulous persons, reportedly connected to the Toronto hotel he stayed in. This incident was just another stumbling block and has effectively been overcome.

So "Feisty Foxy" and de 'Gangsta for Life,' have a tentative title for the new collaboration - "Fire." It was recorded at DASECA's studio with Koch Records' Bob Perry as producer. A report explained how Foxy planned this collaboration for some time now, shouting out Mavado on the intro and laying down her verses around 2 months ago.

"Foxy had been in dialogue with my manager for some time now talking about doing the track," said Mavado. "You know Foxy's a hothead so the combination with me and her was fire!"

"Koch has a lot of money invested in Foxy's project," said Perry. "Her going to jail obviously threw a spanner in the works, but we have to try and capitalize on the publicity that it has generated, which is why we are pushing out the record as quickly as we can."

Koch Records has an impressive and ever-growing roster of acts from all genres of music and this has thrust them to the top spot in the world as an independent record label. "Koch had some great success recently with the Sean Kingston single," Perry explained, "So our radio department is very strong at the moment. We were hoping Mavado would give us a great record that we could push as the single and we weren't disappointed."

Mavado has been spreading his wings with collaborations with overseas acts, teaming up with Busta Rhymes, Wyclef Jean and Uncle Murder recently for songs on their albums. Sales of his album, "Gangsta For Life - the Symphony of David Brooks" have been going well, keeping him in the Billboard Reggae Top 10 since its release.

Founded by Irish and Chin Inc., the highly anticipated meeting of "toppa notch" selectors and sounds, will be held at Amazura in Queens, New York, on November 24, 2007. "We are extremely ecstatic about closing out World Clash in style, as these past ten years have been quite rewarding," says Garfield "Chin" Bourne, Irish and Chin, Inc. "Our dedicated fans deserve to experience the best in sound clash entertainment, while being a part of history."

World Clash New York revolutionized sound system (DJ) competitions and the sound clash arena as a whole. "Game Over" is expected to attract a diverse audience of clash lovers as well as those not particularly fond of sound clashes, with its champion features and driving dancehall rhythms.

Guidelines set by boxing will be followed, with "Game Over" mimicking boxing's staging of multiple matches in one night. Keeping with the huge sport of boxing, Irish and Chin, Inc. has decided to bring World Clash to a close by staging three marquee events in one night.

The openers will consist of two 10-minute matches and a "tune fi tune" segment with a Vintage Cup Clash between Ninja Man & David Rodigan, followed by a Celebrity Cup Clash between Beenie Man & Tony Matterhorn. Finally, The Main Event will follow standard World Clash guidelines and feature a stunning line up of World Clash champions including: Black Kat (2003 & 2004), Mighty Crown (1999), Bass Odyssey (2001 & 2006), Rebel Tone (2002) and Sentinel (2005).

Irish and Chin, Inc. is credited for producing flagship sound clashes, including the popular World Clash series, that began in New York in 1998. The event was created as a vehicle of reviving New York's diminishing sound clash arena. World Clash grew into a gigantic event, which attracted thousands of diehard fans each year and some of the World's best sound systems. World Clash in New York's popularity spawned World Clash in other territories including Jamaica, Canada and Antigua.

Duane Stevenson inspires a “Fairy Tale’ with debut release “From August Town”

DuaneStephenson_SEPT 30.jpgDuane 'Soul Roots' Stephenson is truly a fresh ray of light on the Jamaican reggae music scene. Formerly of To-Isis, Stephenson's solo career is now in the making and this lyrically fit and powerful performer has just released his debut album, "From August Town." Released on the VP label, the album features mostly new material with a few familiar tracks. "I would love for people to sit, watch and listen to good music without violence without hate. Music that fills you with love and hope," Stevenson remarked, in explaining his vision behind the album and its 'star' track, "Fairy Tale."

"Fairy Tale" is one of the best tracks on the album with meaningful lyrics and a strong rhythm. It is a soothing ode to the struggles of life and is aimed at inspiring the oppressed and disheartened. Reggae horns icon Dean Fraser is credited for forging this hit with his excellent composition and arrangements. Oral Napier directed the video for "Fairy Tale" that features Lamont Savary on acoustic guitar. The video was shot in Kingston and successfully mirrors the message that the song conveys.

According to Stevenson "Fairy Tale" is an ode to all who have had to come through struggle. His favourite scene from the video is the shot where a child comes home to his grandmother with a good report card and after some hesitation and reflection on her own struggles, the grandmother gives the child the adoration and compliments he deserves.

Born in August Town himself, the 31 year old has racked up a wealth of musical experience since his Tivoli High School choir days and the times spent at Cathy Levy's Little People & Team Players Club, which is a Kingston based performing arts school. Drawing on the influences of musicians like, his uncle, Michael Rutherford, who once sang lead in popular groups like, the Sonny Bradshaw Band, Stevenson has become an excellent vocalist with good style and most importantly, a professional stance.

A remarkable songwriter, Stevenson has crafted compositions for artists such as: Luciano, Morgan Heritage and most notably Jah Cure with the mega hit "Reflections", a song that became an anthem. His professional development has steered Stevenson towards producing and he has done work on the "Reflections" album and on Tarrus Riley's "Parable" and "Mystic Routes Journey."
"From August Town" is very poetic and at the same time current album, with beautiful but rough edged vocals pushing the boundaries to what we now know as Roots Reggae. Get to know Duane 'Soul Roots' Stevenson from August Town.
