Romain Virgo takes the rising star for 2007
By: Elizabeth Smith
In true "Idol" mode, the 4th Digicel Rising Stars talent [singing] competition saw its finale last night in Kingston, Jamaica. TV J carried the exciting proceedings live while a simultaneous concert took place on the grounds of New Kingston's, Mas Camp. Described as the most exciting night on local television, loads of people gathered to take part and root for their favorite singer. In similar "Idol" style the winner was decided by public vote sent in through telephone texts or calls.
Two finalists remained after weeks of auditions, performances and eliminations. They were Jodian Pantry and Romain Virgo. Both were extremely popular with the studio and Mas Camp audiences and this was their night of decision. Viewing the proceedings from big screen, while the finalists waited anxiously for the results, patrons became increasingly thrilled as the suspense thickened.
Tarrus Riley was on hand as co-host at Mas Camp, and he helped liven things up with renditions of crowd favorites like, "Beware" and "She's Royal." He was doing fine and explained to Yardflex that the car accident he was involved in from the previous night was as a result of being side swiped by another vehicle. Tarrus was just shaken up a bit as his air bag malfunctioned. Of course patrons were overjoyed at his presence.
Romain was finally declared the winner and there was tumultuous applause. The Mas Camp went absolutely crazy and they were even more ecstatic to have the finalist each perform.
The final results are: Romain Virgo – Winner, Jodain Pantry – Second Place and Inga Stewart – Third Place.

Romain, who recently graduated from Abouthnott Gallimore High School in St. Ann, is 17 years old and plans to focus on his passion for music education even more than on the business for now. Interested in a future in the music industry he plans to study music [drumming] and drama mainly, at Edna Manley School.

Wayne Wonder got his eyes on platinum with FOREVA
International reggae star Wayne Wonder officially launched his new album, "Foreva" in New York City this week. Hundreds of media houses, industry heavyweights, and fans packed the exclusive Manhattan venue, The Manor, to join the celebration. Wonder unveiled tracks from the new album, and was joined by Shaggy, Mr. Vegas, Assassin, Red Fox, and Rayvon for some impromptu freestyles, much to the crowd's delight.
"This is how an album release should be," commented veteran New York disc jockey DJ Roy, of Irie Jam Radio 93.5 FM. With a huge projection screen looping Wayne Wonder images and videos, and the bevy of media, the venue was rammed as patrons vied to catch a glimpse of the action.
"The last album went gold so I'm going for platinum this time," stated an obviously exuberant Wonder, surrounded by friends and colleagues, including his official DJ Lion Face of King Addies, "Foreva" producers Snow Cone and Riddim Fingaz, "No Letting Go" video director, Little X and Jay Will, who directed his latest video "Again."
Wonder answered critics who've been lamenting the late follow up to his Grammy-nominated "No Holding Back" (2003). "I make music day and night, so even though it's been a while since the last album, this one didn't take long to make because I've still been recording and putting music out every day."
"Foreva" features vocal and production collaborations with hip-hop diva Trina, Don Corleon and Sly & Robbie, and sees Wonder as its executive producer. Released by VP Records and Singso Records (Wonder's label), "Foreva" is now available worldwide in stores and online.

Morgan Heritage feed culture and roots to world youth
By: Joseph Cunningham
Morgan Heritage is arguably the only current Reggae outfit that transmits what many serious lovers of the genre calls the authentic "Roots and Culture" in a very effective way to the international audience. We have heard stories of the group pulling crowds in excess of 30,000 people at live shows on the European continent; shows that were promoted with the group as its headline act.
From its genesis, the father of them all, Delroy Morgan had music in his blood and toured the world. He then imparted the gift to his children through intensive vocal and instrument training. To date the recordings speak for themselves. Since its inception in 1990, the group has released big hits such as "Let's Make Up," "Don't Haffi Dread," "Down By the River" and "Reggae Bring Back Life," just to name a few.
Morgan Heritage has released many albums; probably the most memorable of them has been "Full Circle." However, there is another album in the works, titled, "Mission in Progress". Lead singer, Gramps said, "The objective behind the upcoming production is to save the music. We want to do this by introducing the young generations to roots music." He added that the album would feature 15 tracks, and will be released under the groups own Gedion Music Label.
"The messages to be imparted will highlight real life situations affecting the international society. Children are having children, teachers are afraid to reprimand students. The social breakdown has to be addressed," Gramps emphasized. Don Corleone and Steven McGregor are guest producers on the album. The group will return from its promotional album tour in Europe next week.

Photos like this one of Lauryn Hill performing in what closely resembles a clown's outfit is to many, displaying signs of being mentally ill. A very disturbing radio report aired recently in Jamaica featured hosts who discussed this mental condition negatively and jeeringly. Yardflex would like to extend our regrets if Lauryn Hill is indeed living with a mental disability at this time. Our [Black, Caribbean. African] culture(s) have been on the whole, traditionally unknowledgeable and often unkind to the mentally disabled, however this is a manageable illness and we wish that Lauryn is not ill, but if she is – we pray for a speedy recovery for her.

Judge turned solo recording artiste launches CD “The Music In Me”
By: Elizabeth Smith
The "red hot" Carol Gonzales launched her debut album entitled, "The Music In Me" at the Terra Nova Hotel on September 27, 2007. Making a bold statement of "follow your dreams," Gonzales made a daring shift from being a Judge in a court of Law in Jamaica, to being a sensational and sexy recording artist.
Although a bit late to start, the launch was a treat and some, with the confident, gorgeous and talented Gonzales proving to all present that this choice of hers is one that she will not look back on with regrets.
"...I gave away my robe last week," Gonzales exclaimed as she manned the tight on stage accompaniment. The album rocks with solid musicianship from many greats including horn playing icon, Dean Fraser. Gonzales was the undisputed star performer at this star studded launch, but powerful presentations also came from Dean Fraser, Chantelle Ernandez and Gas Money. Tarrus Riley was sadly missed.
Big Kudos to Dacosta Records, as Gonzales will bring a fresh reggae breeze – especially in the global mainstream. Gonzales had a solid and diverse team that spoke volumes to her inclusive stance in life. Her proud girls, husband and oodles of judiciary types looked on with nuff love and pride.
Improvising on stage and interacting with the audience, Gonzales jumped from mainly cover song to cover song. She had singer/reporter Heather Cummings come up to demonstrate the sexy wining to the rhythm, she also called up her voice trainer – who had been sitting proud the whole time. However the trainer was not ready for the improvisation that was pounced upon her, and had trouble staying in pitch on a spur of the moment duet of a few musical phrases.
Although at the launch her singing was also a bit pitchy in spots, Gonzales is proof positive of recent research in education that correlates a strong musical background with high academic achievement. Among those in the house to celebrate with her, were reggae icons, Fred Locks and Half Pint.

Irie Love (real name) taking her “Red Stripe Break” to higher heights
By: Joseph Cunningham
Irie Love's image personifies her stage name. She is beautiful; the kind of beauty that will make a Caribbean on-looker say, irie! Further, the physical is accompanied by a voice that has done background vocals for mega-stars such as Chaka Khan and Pink; therefore, it stands to reason that Reggae music has another super-star possibility on its periphery!
She gained initial recognition within the Reggae arena when she became a finalist in a talent search competition in Jamaica. It was a televised competition called "The Red Stripe Big Break". She told Yardflex during an interview from London, England yesterday, that she feels it was her destiny to be in Jamaica at that time. "My manager at the time took me to Jamaica in an attempt to do some work within the Reggae fraternity. When I arrived in Jamaica the competition was about to begin, so I entered." The rest is memorable. She did not win the competition, but the talents she displayed were undeniable.
At present, it is no surprise that she is signed to Gedion Music, the record label owned by the legendary Morgan Heritage. Gramps, the lead singer of the group spoke admirably of his new signee, stating that, "She has loads of talent." He added that he had been looking for a female singer with Irie's style to add to the label's roster, and so when he recognized her potentials, he had no hesitation in signing.
Irie is currently on a promotional tour for her upcoming album, "The Life of Love," which will be released exclusively under the banners of Gedion Music label. The tour has taken her to Italy, France and London.
She said the album will highlight her versatility and love for various genres of music like, Hip Hop, R&B, Rock, Jazz and of course, Reggae. Top producers, Sly and Robbie, Bobby Digital and Steven McGregor are working on the album that is still being completed.

JAH CURE – “MY LIFE”

The single, "My Life" is a sombre reflection of Jah Cure's life experiences. The mood is set as Jah Cure, accompanied by the slow strumming of an acoustic guitar, speaks of the world he has been through. Imbedded in the lyrics is a song of possibilities and hope which shows Jah Cure's positive view on life.
Jah Cure tells us that he has "seen it all while the wicked people stand aside and do their thing," but he still prays to Jah and uses his music as his comfort. "My Life" is a deep look into the mind of Jah Cure and the mental struggles he has had to overcome. "My Life" is perfectly arranged and the ambiance helps to emphasize Cure's unique voice and lyrical ability. One of the best attributes of this song is the maturity that Jah Cure demonstrates on the track without overpowering the listener.
He is at one with the music.

Dancehall anthem “DOH!” – out in video soon
Musical maestro Serani continued his rising journey as a solo artiste recently as he completed the shooting of his club banger video, "DOH!" featuring Bugle. Shot on several locations in Kingston and St Andrew, with Julia Braham behind the lens, the video is expected to hit television screens within just days, a release said.
"DOH!" is described in the release, as a video/song that takes a shot at all the haters who don't like seeing youths rise; a common issue facing young artists in Jamaica. Produced by hit-making trio DASECA ( two members of whom make cameo appearances in the video), "DOH!" has become an anthem at Kingston's Dancehall parties.
In discussing his current success Serani said, "Right now we are just putting in the work and finding tracks and songs that connect with the people. So far the response has been good to my music and I give thanks for that. My management and I have worked out a long term plan of where we want to take this, so we are just working towards achieving our goals." Serani added he is planning to put out singles initially, whilst selecting certain juggling riddims to feature on as well.

Clearing the Air On the Torpedo Riddim Mix-up
Too similar are the two 'Torpedos' to be a mere coincidence some say. 'Jus Bus,' Miami/Antiguan based producer, says his latest star studded riddim 'Torpedo' has been a work in progress since its conception in 2005. However, the recent emergence of a similarly named and sounding riddim, 'Operation Torpedo,' by producer DJ Wayne, is causing some 'passa passa' in the ever controversial dancehall music scene and disillusionment for music lovers and fans.
Weighing in on the situation, 'Jus Bus,' who is clearly the forerunner in this riddim matter, stated, "We nuh care wah dem ah bus out dere. In fact I am a fan of DJ Wayne's 'Operation Torpedo' riddim - it have a nice lickle vibe."
The issue that must be clarified for all parties concerned is that the difference be known and that fans get the facts.
Executive produced by Glenn "Madd Dawg" Francis, A&R'd by Delly Ranx and mixed by Stephen 'De Genius' McGreggor (the 17 year old son of reggae legend Freddie McGreggor, responsible for hit riddims 'Tremor,' 'Powercut' and 'Dark Again') – 'Jus Bus' produced 'Torpedo' riddim was officially released in 2007 and since has began to heat up airwaves in dancehall markets.
This official 'Torpedo' riddim features the artists Vybz Kartel, Delly Ranx, Chino, Alozade, Bitta Blood, Kenyatta, Craig Dennis & Delly Ranxx, Tyna Vargas, Mr.Peppa and more. According to producer ‘Jus Bus,’ the close knit camp decided to dedicate the riddim to the memory of DJ Craig Dennis, whose sudden passing shocked and affected them deeply.
"This riddim is no joke ting - Craig was already on his way, him did a get ready fi bus large even without my help or this riddim… Craig and Delly cut a bad song pon di riddim," Jus Bus said. He further explained, "Delly is de one who pull di artist together and voice wid Craig same way. I never met di youth, wish I had, since I was never the one to fly to JA to cut the tune dem it was my bredrin Madd Dawg that did, but I think we all gonna miss him. For his music was real - him did a go torpedo his way to the top."
'Jus Bus' is also responsible For the riddim (instrumental) track for QQ's huge international hit entitled, "Rume Ram (Tek We Ah Gah Tek It To Dem)," a track he produced with a Canadian based Producer, Donavon "Drag" Rhoden for Deam Driven Entertainment/Jus Kauz Records.
Plans are now underway to shoot a video for some of the songs on the original "torpedo" riddim, by: 'Jus Bus.'

Mavado Jacked up…robbed in Toronto
Mavado left many anxious dancehall fans in a lost loop in Atlanta as well as in Trinidad and Tobago as promoters in both places were forced to cancel concerts following a robbery the artiste experienced in Toronto, Canada, ttgapers.com reports today.
It is alleged the DJ was cruelly robbed just after arriving at his hotel and while checking in. In Toronto for another concert, Mavado reportedly lost extremely important documents in the robbery. These include his passport, money, other travel documents and a laptop computer.
Unconfirmed reports – at news time – claim that at Toronto's first Black owned Urban Station FLOW 93.5fm advertisements were run offering rewards of up to C$5000, for the return of Mavado's belongings.
Without travel documents, Mavado was refused entry into the US to perform at his Atlanta gig. He was further distressed to find out another concert scheduled for Gulf City, Trinidad and Tobago would also have to be nullified.
Fans in the twin isles were not the least bit amused or sympathetic to the cause and they felt as if "duped" considering the sign at the club said Mavado had missed his flight instead of explaining the real situation. In anger the fans allegedly got wild and overbearing on Sunday night – with accounts of many making threats at the promoter, Glenroy Watson.
Credit cards also stolen from Mavado were reportedly used at major Toronto commercial centres, in the stores, Best Buy and others.

Saucy Jerk Fest sizzles in Weston, Florida
By: Elizabeth Smith
Photography By: 'Dreamy'
For four years the Jamaica Jerk Festival has been a sizzling favorite and Sunday, September 23 was no different. Weston Florida's Markham Park became the hub of a succulent "Jerk Showcase" outdone by no other.
The authentic Jerk Master, Boston Jerk was there from - Port Antonio and servings of jerk in every style were available for the connoisseur of the Jerk persuasion. Lobster, chicken and pork were jerked, but the real crowd pleaser was Jerk Ice Cream.
Outselling the crabs, corn and all other – this Jerk Ice Cream by Tropical Flavors Ice Cream, was a sell off.
Produced by Ridims Marketing Jamaica Awareness, Inc. and Air Jamaica; the Jamaica Jerk Festival attracted many reggae greats and was only slightly obstructed by inclement weather. The rain came down, preventing headliner, Allison Hinds from closing off the show, leaving many disappointed. Muddy conditions before that did not deter the show to go on, but at the end it got unbearable for everyone and the show was shut down.
This lockdown happened only after wonderful performances from acts like, Nadge a 14 year old who has aced the violin, Bryon Lee and The Dragonnaires, Pluto Shervington, Eugene Grey, The Blue Glaze Mento Band and folk singers.
Eddie Edwards and Sydney Roberts were at the helm of a production team that pulled of another great one. Despite the muck and muddy mess, patrons stayed on - continuing to enjoy the unifying atmosphere. Byron Lee was in attendance, however he did not perform and Freddie McGregor was another of many musical greats taking in all the good vibes.

CE'CILE dismisses rumours of her pregnancy for Bounty Killer
Ce'Cile is riding the waves of success with her recent release of "Bad Gyal" and corresponding tour, however there have been elements bent on dampening her spirits and agitating not only the Number 1 dancehall act but also her fans. "A wha dis not...too much mix up mix up," one avid fan was heard exclaiming after news broke recently perpetuating rumours that Ce'Cile was pregnant with Bounty killer's child.
Then to make matters worse "The Star" reported that Ce’Cile said – she started the rumour herself...which was false and they've since retracted. However, Ce'Cile has come forward herself following her return from a recent CD promo tour of Japan to emphatically deny the rumour and clear up the gossip once and for all.
"No, I am not pregnant, I was never pregnant and I have never been romantically involved with Bounty Killer nor have I ever said that I was," Ce'Cile said in a release that aims at setting the record straight.
According to this release, the rumour started when Ce'Cile decided to test just how rumours can start, due to rumours that had been spread about the artiste in the past.
"It's amazing how things can get out of hand. On Friday June 1st, I appeared on Hype TV's Up & Live to premiere my new video Goody. Anju Val (Hype TV VJ) had mentioned rumours about me having had breast implants. Amused by this new rumour, I remarked that I am never sure how these rumours get started but am intrigued by them. Jokingly, I said to Anju Val that we should start our own rumour and see how far it gets. On live TV, I said, while laughing 'OK Anju, let us say that I am pregnant for you'. It still amazes me that even though I actually said that we were joking about it, people ran with it. As for Bounty's involvement, I'm not quite sure why his name came up, think we were seen together at an event, and probably because people now thought I was pregnant, they were looking for the baby daddy, so now it's Bounty's baby. I'm still in shock at how this has gotten out of hand" Ce'Cile said.
"The rumours don't upset me, people will always say things about people in the public eye, but the fact that I was now being made to look like I started a rumour about being pregnant for Bounty for publicity really upsets me. I'm glad that they ["The Star"] have apologized. Not sure how many people will read it, but at least they made the gesture. I just want to put this behind me and focus on my work. But I did prove my point. Rumours can be started very easily. People want to talk about people, especially artistes, and they will pick the words that they want to use to create a sensational story"
Ce'Cile continues promoting her latest album "Bad Gyal" on the Japanese AVEX label. She will next perform in Jamaica at Curefest on October 14 at the Trelawny Multi Purpose Stadium.

77-Klash: A Positive Klash of Cultures
Artiste and producer 77 – Klash (pronounced two-seven clash) has put Jamaica on the global video game map as he is the only Jamaican artiste featured on Madden 08, the biggest selling video game in the world. Churning out his signature unique blend of dancehall and grime enabled 77 – Klash to not only make that historical mark, but also to dominate the reggae music scene in a big way.
Having produced smash rhythms like the "Scallawah Riddim" and underground hits like "Brooklyn Anthem," 77- Klash gives the credit for his hit musical flavor to the wide range of influences that he has been exposed to through family, friends, art and especially through music, that has played a significant role in his life.
A student of reggae dancehall and international music for as long as he can remember, 77 – Klash claims influences such as Yellow Man, Super Cat, Bob Marley, The Clash, Lil John, Notorious BIG, Count Ossie, Junior Reid and many more. Being inspired by such a wide range of music forms is what forces 77-Klash's eclectic style.
"My style of music is an amalgamation of sounds mixed up, passa passa, upfull and uplifting," 77-Klash explained. In 2007 his "Swarm Riddim," that contains heavy influences of electro-rock and old school dancehall, overpowered the scene. It features notable artistes like: Lutan Fyah, Idonia and Vybz Kartel.
Working with Rza, Dready, Cougar, Afu Ra, M1 (Dead Presidents), Matt Shadetek, Jahdan, Turbulence, Jah Mason, Norris Man, Kid Kurup and others has afforded 77-Klash much success over the years. He wants to continue in that same vein with both known and unknown artistes.
"I see my music opening up a lot of doors that have been held shut for a while now, I see my music providing a missing link in Jamaican music and pushing our music and culture forward," Klash expounded. He is now planning his next project that will be a completely original compilation album with artistes from Jamaica and abroad.

“Best Friend” by JAI is a reggae gospel album in all its glory
The brand new release of the debut gospel album "Best Friend" by JAI a.k.a. Wayne Buchanan firmly keeps with the tradition of what gospel music is all about - vibrant, rhythmic and soulful. "Best Friend" conveys a sound that is upbeat with a holy feeling that transcends flavors and styles, from traditional reggae to dancehall rhythms plus R&B and Hip Hop sounds.
On first listening, a number of tracks from this 15 set collection jump out at you, such as the upbeat, "Shout Jah" wherein JAI sings soulful praises to Jesus. On "All I Need" he rides a forceful dancehall rhythm while on "Healing," "Show Some Love" and "Spend My Always" which features Tina James with some tuff traditional reggae rhythm, JAI's vocalizing is reminiscent of reggae's super group Morgan Heritage. R&B and Hip Hop presence are strong on "Love" the title track, "They Don't Know" and the combination "Coming Soon" witch features Dwayne Jackson.
JAI is an acronym for JESUS AND I, an appropriate name for this Christian artist who, from as early as 12 years old had been saved and started singing in the church. At age 15 he became the lead singer for the group 'Total Praise.' Continuing his upward mobility, JAI became a member of the established band 'C Sharp.' Not withstanding those experiences, it was the release of his hit single, "Cant Take My Lord," released on Johnnie Clarke's Marjohnmuzik label that signaled the rise of this glittering star.
Thereafter JAI joined the revolutionary gospel reggae band Katalys Crew as the lead vocalist along with DJ Radic, releasing the album "Open Your Eyes. He simultaneously performed with Nadine Blair’s Perpetual Praise Team in their inspirational praise and worship ministry. There are a number of other collaborative projects that he has recorded for including the "Yow 2003" album.
JAI's musical mission is to minister to the masses with reality lyrics filled with spiritual vibes. He has toured the Caribbean and performed in Canada in his endeavor to spread the gospel of Jesus around the globe. He said "I am known as a solo artist now. But it is all about JESUS AND I; he is my Best Friend."
JAI is Produced by: Image Records, Marketed by: Caribbean Gospel Ministries USA, Distributed By: Finatic Records.

Truly Blessed is Mystery Bless
By: Joseph Cunningham
'Poor people fed up to how the system sheg-up, dem issue gun fi yuh pickney buss!' These are words from a song recorded by one of the most decorated artistes in Jamaica's secular music history, Bounty Killer.
The song examines a few of the challenges faced by youths in Jamaican inner cities.
Mystery Bless is a Gospel artiste who lived a life that epitomizes the Jamaican inner-city experience. He was christened Roger Linton and it is arguable that the line of the christening prayer, which says, " I now pronounce him a well blessed child," has certainly enforced a divine intervention in his life.
He grew up and still lives in Tavern, Papine. One of four sons overseen by his single mother; today he is one of two brothers still enjoying the privilege of "state freedom." His eldest brother was notorious in crime and is now deceased, while another who followed the notorious trail, is currently behind bars.
"Before accepting Christ I was fond of the thug lifestyle too. Lots of girls, parties and the guns were always visible to me," Mystery Bless recalls. He was also a Dancehall artiste, and admitted being influenced by Bounty Killer's music.
The change in his lifestyle began through his mother's insistence that he attend Sunday school. He got baptized at age 11 but revealed that he still continued in his "retched" ways. Well, "The lord had ordained my salvation," is what he strongly believes, adding that he got to a stage in his life when he made up his mind to "live right."
With the moral support of elder brothers at the Church of Jesus Christ United Faith Apostolic, he has progressed and now is an ordained minister, the youngest in his church assembly at age 21. One of his greatest spiritual gifts is preaching, which is combined with his now renowned dynamic live performances. Mystery Bless came to prominence when he upstaged the headline act at a concert in Jamaica. He recalls, "When the show promoter realized what was happening, he ordered that my set be cut short."
At this point he is not signed to a major record label, but said that he is not worried as he is waiting on the lord to provide the right deal. He can be seen at gospel concerts with the likes of DJ Nicholas, evidence that the leading Gospel artistes have recognized his enormous talents. He revealed that his manager does not have to be a Christian, neither does the producer have to be; "The message must be powerful so as long as there is mutual respect I'm willing to work."
Look out for Mystery Bless; you will witness his transformation.

ROOTZ UNDERGROUND AWAKENS THE 'LOST ANGELS'

Rootz Underground returned home to Jamaica on Monday
September 17 from their successful 7-gig tour of the US. From Miami to California, Rootz rocked and 'reggaed' to packed houses spreading their positive and uplifting message. They established a solid fan base and have been invited to return on a regular basis at the Temple Bar and Malibu Inn in California. Lead singer, Steve G. said, "California was a very spiritually uplifting trip!!! The love of positive reggae music was phenomenal and was probably the strongest I've seen in the US. Our music and vibes were well received and we made new family, friends and fans."
Described by radio's Native Wayne Jobson as a band that has the consciousness, the vibe, the live show presence and the songs to bring roots reggae back to the higher heights, Rootz Underground's praises were sung highly. "They even played two shows in one night on the opposite sides of the city! It is this work ethic that will take them to the top," Jobson continued.
Lead guitarist, Charles Lazarus spoke of the tour as one that certainly taught Rootz how to rock a club. "We play outdoor stages a lot at home but the approach you have to take to play to a club full of dancing people is totally different. What amazed us all was the level of appreciation for reggae and even more so for musicianship. This trip has strengthened the band and made Rootz Underground a force to be reckoned with on stage."
Back home, Rootz Underground will be working on the second video from their upcoming album 'Movement!'

NEW JERSEY REGGAE FEST: Hurricane NINJA MAN inside, hundreds of fans turned away outside.
The 7th Annual New Jersey Reggae Fest turned out to be a roadblock indeed, as hundreds of fans were turned away on September 16 from the overcrowded Terrace Sports Complex in Newark. Some of reggae's most scorching names were on the bill for this historically well attended show. Roadblockradio.com was a main sponsor of the event, but had no idea their name would have rubbed off on the "scheme of things" that day.
Maybe it was because of the huge pre-event "buzz" on Ninja Man, who hardly ever is featured, that caused the outpouring of fans that day, but for those who got to stay...Ninja Man did not disappoint. The "original front teeth, gold teeth Don Gorgon" tore up the New Jersey Sports Complex giving one of his most memorable performances ever - in the US. Reminiscent of his glory days in the 90s, with that old, “Mighty Sting Vibes,” Ninja Man gave old and new fans what they had come out for and the applause in return was thunderous.
Taking musical jabs at one and all, Ninja Man speared no-one from his lyrical wrath. Accusing fellow DJs Beenie Man, Bounty Killer and D’Angel of going against their spoken philosophies on life, Ninja Man more than lit up the place with his saucy renditions. "I can never understand how Ninja always light up the place without a string of new hits", one female fan beamed. When Ninja finally said goodbye after two well earned encores, thousands of screaming reggae fans were left begging for more.
"I was very pleased that once again we were able to pull off a great concert, despite the fact that we had to turn many away", G City, concert promoter commented. Besides Ninja Man, all the artistes billed delivered strong, crowd-pleasing performances, with Tarrus Riley captivating the audience completely, giving a stirring performance at his first major New Jersey concert. Confidence and charisma were his, as he sailed smoothly through the set singing, "She's Royal," "Beware," "Parables" and others. Ras Emmanuel from New Jersey also proved in his performance, that he will be around for the long haul.
For Munga Honorable it was a continuation of his great US form, as he unleashed a barrage of favorites from his catalogue of hits including: "Bad From Me Born" and "Bad Like I." DJ Tony Matterhorn had the ladies on their feet with "Dutty Wine" and "Goodas Fe Dem". 'Five Star General' Bounty Killer and 'The Doctor' Beenie Man both worked hard but neither could match the lyrical agility of Ninja Man who reigned supreme.

Jah Cure To Perform in Jamaica Soon
By: Olimatta Taal
Many reggae fans of the world have been longing to see Jah Cure perform live in concert. For the first time in the Caribbean, fans will get an opportunity to be a part of a three day Cure Fest celebrating his freedom and birthday. The events will take place from October 12-14th.
A launch was held at the Cable and Wireless Golf Club in New Kingston on Tuesday September 18, to unveil the activities scheduled for Cure Fest weekend. Hosted by Nicki Z of Zip Fm and Hype TV, the keynote was delivered by Dr. Leaheim Semaj who spoke about forgiveness, talent, and the potential for good things to come to Jah Cure. Dennis Howard unveiled the events of the weekend and the extensive line up.
The weekend will begin with an all-white-all-inclusive party to be held at the Starfish Trelawny Hotel on October 12th. Etana, Karen Smith and Live Wyaa will perform and it will be Cure's earthstrong. The following night, the festivities will move to Pier 1 in Montego Bay where "45 Cures" will be held. It is to be a clash between Jamaica's number one radio DJ's from Irie Fm and Zip Fm against the biggest sound systems like Stone Love, Danger Zone, Renaissance, Razz & Biggy, Sky Juice and others.

The climax of the weekend is a concert featuring Jah Cures first live performance in Jamaica since his release. It will also include some of the best that reggae has to offer with artist like Beres Hammond, Barrington Levy, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Capleton, Jr. Reid, Queen Ifrika, Cecile, Mavado, and others.
A slightly emotional Jah Cure thanked everyone for supporting the launch and following a small request from the audience, he shared a snippet of "Freedom," a recent hit song. Cure Fest aims to bring back consciousness to reggae/dancehall with a mission to cure the world through music. Beneficiaries of the show will be Western Society for the Upliftment of Children and the Alpha Boys School.

Ricardo "Bibi" Gardener reaching Musical Heights
By: Joseph Cunningham
Ricardo "Bibi" Gardner, beloved in Jamaica since his Manning Cup and Reggae Boyz Football days, is charting another course, a musical one - for himself. As Chief Executive Officer at the Mona based Heart of Love Production/Entertainment Management/Booking Agency, Bibi has not only orchestrated the rise of Dancehall artiste Erupt, he has also been responsible with his partners, for producing vibrant rhythms for the dancehall.
Before all this Bibi ruled the Football world that saw him wallow in stardom at Wolmer’s Boys School when he led his team to a dramatic and memorable victory before a packed national stadium in 1993. A key feature of Bolton Wanderers English Premier League (EPL) Campaigns for many years, Bibi was only 15 years old when he was recognized nationally as not just an exceptionally talented athlete, but as a notable individual. His ongoing EPL success came after shining brightly at the 1998 World Cup of Football (soccer) in France with the Regge Boyz. When Bibi signed to Bolton Wanderers at age 19, he became the youngest Caribbean player ever to play football at that level.
Since its establishment three years ago, Heart of Love - made up of Bibi's cousin, Nigel Grant, aka, Nyah and Camara Rowe, has been responsible for Erupt's mega-hit, "Seh dem a Gangsta". Other popular rhythms produced have been, "Gangsta Sittin" and the "Potential" rhythm, which featured the likes of Sizzla Kalonge, Erupt, Natural Black, Richie Spice and A'taru.
"Our aim is to bring quality music with a positive message," Nyah stated, adding that there is no "short-changing" of talent and quality at Heart of Love. As such, their current projects are set to have a positive and lasting impact on the Jamaica and the world. One is a dynamic enhancement of the Atomic rhythm, which is the "Atomic Bomb", built by Suku of Ward 21 and distributed by Energy Beat. The rhythm highlights Beenie Man, Munga with "When My Gun Rise", Busy Signal, Sizzla with "Strength to Strength" and Vybz Kartel with "Great Ball a Fire."
The Four Bottle rhythm will be another seriously hot contender in the Dancehall. Interestingly, the rhythm features a song from Dancehall icon, Mad Cobra, with a video that addresses with subtlety, a current burning issue in the Dancehall. The song is titled "Don’t Cry". The video displays "the Cobra" giving words of encouragement to a man who has been cheated on by his girl!

Shabba - the saga continues...
By: Elizabeth Smith
Atlanta's Club Legacy was packed to the brim on September 8, 2007 as 2500 people came out to welcome forward "King Shabba." This was one of his rare appearances and Shabba Ranks more than thrilled the crowd; they were mesmerized.
Coming out on stage at around 4:00 in the morning, Shabba performed all his greats and some new hits to tracks. The lone performer for the evening, Shabba's patient and loyal fans were not disappointed, despite the missing instrumentalists.
One patron said, "Although the show was produced using sound tracks, with such a high entry price of $40 and $60 (VIP), I had to be here; it's because of Shabba - that they could pull this off and get away with it." Truly missed over the years on the reggae music scene, Shabba is now steadily working on new releases.
A single with Jay Z is in the works and Shabba has recently recorded another single with Busta Rhymes. The dancehall icon told Yardflex, "Shabba neva done...but tek some time out to bring up my youth dem - and you will see nuff of me in 2008." As a father, Shabba offers up advice to dads in his lyrical messages.
One strong value Shabba upholds is revealed in his prominent lyrics, "...will power - strong mind and ability that's why them can't stop a yute like me..." He told Yardflex that those three values must be applied in life, and if one possesses all three, then they can't go wrong.
Was his hiatus all about things going wrong for him in reggae music business? Shabba maintains he took time out to be more with his children, but also implied disappointment with past industry experiences. "Make sure yu get yu masters – mek sure yu get yu publishing - know the intricacies of the business and how to apply yourself," were strong suggestions of his.
After performing for about an hour and a half, Shabba was called back for three encores and after the last one, the crowd still wanted more. To this request, Shabba said a simple, "No - Cut," leaving all hanging on for his new releases and major resurgence.

Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony - PREGNANT
By J. Koni
Congratulations are in order for Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony who are expecting a child in the Spring, according to Hollywood.com. The report cites In Touch Weekly Magazine that also claimed a Beverly Hills gynecologist, fertility specialist, Dr Robert Katz gave the exuberant couple the good news.
The publication was informed by sources close to the expecting couple that there may be a double blessing in store, since ultrasound examinations performed recently were unable to help doctors determine if more than one baby was in there.
Lopez 38, and her 39 year old husband are said to have been working on getting their family started for some time and eventually turned to in vitro fertilization. The report says tests calculate that she is about 12 weeks ahead.
Anthony, who already has 3 kids, was reportedly seen shopping for a man’s baby gear nappy carrying bag, that he purchased for $120.

Macka Diamond Steps Up Her Game
By: Olimatta Taal

Macka Diamond has headed in the direction of adding non-fictional literary author to the number of career accolades that she has built for herself. Her first book "Bun Him," the first novel to represent Reggae/Dancehall culture has been released. The book launch was held at Weekendz on Monday, September 17.
"Bun Him" is the follow up to the single "Bun Him" by Macka Diamond and Blacker, that was a number 1 hit. It spent several weeks on local and international charts. An anthem for many women, it became a very controversial song.
Similar to the song, the book is about a young woman named Sandra who marries for financial gain and is very unhappy with her relationship. Sexually frustrated, she cheats on her husband and gets pregnant by her boyfriend.
"The book is not about giving a man bun. It is about the problems that men and women face in their relationships," explains Macka. She continues by saying that she does not condone women cheating in their relationships.
A number of people read excerpts from the book or commended Ms. Diamond on her new venture like Lady G, Captain Barkey, Claudette Kemp, Junie Platinum, Queen Paula, Dr. Carolyn Cooper, Prof. Hope, and others.
There were a number of who's who of the Reggae Industry in support of Macka's new book. Voice Mail, D'Angel, Gyptian, Courtney John, Razz & Biggy, and Richie Feelings came out.
"Bun Him" is steamy, exciting and you won't want to put it down once you start reading it. It is a novel that both male and female can relate to and will enjoy. Currently it is available at all bookstores in Jamaica with plans to distribute in the rest of the Caribbean, North America, and Japan.

Reports have begun to surface that part of the reason for National Basketball Association (NBA) star Shaquille O'Neal's filing to divorce his wife is because of her close relationship to her personal trainer.
Further, whispers have said that Shaunie O'Neal may have purchased that trainer a new Miami condo.
According to a person close to the O'Neal family, the young man who reportedly came between Shaq and his wife is the proud owner of a brand new luxury condo that Shaq's wife bought for him! The insider is alleged to have said, "[He] bought the condo early this year. And I'm not sure how much personal trainer's make, but I doubt it's enough for a condo in that building."
A Miami real estate website reports that condos in the building where the trainer reportedly now lives start at $650,000.

Capleton Showers Blessings following "A St Mary Mi Come From"
Clifton "Capleton" Bailey walked his talk in a big way on Thursday September 13, 2007 as he made presentations to a number of schools and organizations, using funds raised at his annual Benefit concert, A St Mary Mi Come From, that took place on August 5, 2007. Annotto Bay's Grays Inn Sports Complex was buzzing with excitement, as children from different schools performed with dance, song and cultural recitation. One school's choral group presented a moving song written especially for Capleton, whose altruism and thoughtfulness has impacted the lives of so many.
Giving back to the community is paramount in Capleton's philosophy of life. In fact the Mayor for Annotto Bay, St. Mary came forward to shower further praise on Capleton, by revealing that he has never requested a waiver for Parish Council Entertainment Tax/Fees - usually given to promoters of benefit concerts.
In explaining Capleton's adherence to this philanthropic stance, his Manager, Claudette Kemp said, it all began for Capleton when he was a young "sufferer" - walking and singing and selling exercise books in his parish of St Mary. "Capleton made a pledge at that time, that he would take care of his parish one day – when he got rich...he told himself that the time would come when he would be giving away exercise books to school children instead of selling them," Kemp explained.
Tributes to "The Fire Man" were abound on this joyous occasion, with some of them penned by: Superintendent Dennis Natt of the Annotto Bay Police Department, Dr. Carolyn Cooper, Professor in charge of the Reggae Studies Unit at the University of the West Indies and Mrs Vinetta Clarke, Principal of Islington High School.
St. Mary has historically been recognized as one of the poorest parishes with its hilly terrain. Coming from this region, thrust Capleton into a keen awareness of how much need there was within not only his poor community but also those of the world. Capleton said, "If I could change the world, I would - but for now, I will start with St. Mary."
Capleton's well needed gifts came at a perfect time...following the hurricane Dean. The schools benefiting include: Haile Selassie High School, Jacks River Primary School, Annotto Bay All Age School and Enfield Primary and Jr. High School. Capleton was surrounded at the presentation ceremony by many wonderful children, giving glorious thanks with their presentations.

Will the cap fit OJ on this one
By: J. Koni
O.J. Simpson has emphatically denied swelling reports that he robbed a sports memorabilia dealer at a hotel recently.
The former football star reportedly raided a suite at the Palace Station Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas last Thursday, pretending to be part of a group interested in buying memorabilia items from collector Alfred Beardsley.
The items included the suit Simpson wore when he was acquitted of the double murder of his ex-wife Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman in 1994.
He now faces charges including robbery with a deadly weapon, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, but, O.J is adamant that he is innocent.
He says, "Everybody knows this is stolen stuff. Not only wasn't there a break-in, but Thomas Riccio (the auction house owner) escorted us up to the room. In any event, it's stolen stuff that's mine. Nobody was roughed up."
"I'm O.J. Simpson. How am I going to rob somebody and get away with it? This somebody is going to get his private (belongings) back. That's it. That's not robbery. I don't hang out with gangsters; I hang out with golfers."
Meanwhile, Bruce Fromong, one of O.J. Simpson's alleged armed robbery victims has been taken to the hospital to treat a heart attack. The memorabilia dealer was rushed to Cedar-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles on Monday for severe chest pains. An official report to a Los Angeles website was that "Fromong's heart stopped and had to be restarted."
O.J. Simpson, a former football star was arrested on Sunday, following an armed raid at the Palace Station Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Fromong claims he witnessed Simpson and five associates attempt to rob memorabilia items from collector Alfred Beardsley.

The Hilton Hotel, New Kingston, Jamaica, pulled out all the stops to join in the Ethiopian Millennium celebrations on Wednesday September 12, 2007. One thing was missing though – and that was a strong presence from the Rastafarian community. Only a handful attended and most were performing as drummers, singers and dancers.
It was a well put together evening with early cocktails, finger foods and later an amazing buffet with special vegetarian, Jamaican and African dishes prepared at the Hilton by a special Rastafarian chef!! Hilton's poolside was splendidly decorated with lights and flowing material...was a good show...and again – it's too bad the key folk didn't know.

Did The "Energy God" bruk up "Diddy"
Elephant Man and Diddy - did things come to blows and throws as reported so widely over the past few days? US based website www.mediatakeout.com sent the sensational report sailing across cyber space on the weekend, causing phones to start ringing off the hook. Story goes that the Energy God and his entourage entered the offices of Sean "P Diddy" Combs...was denied entry by the receptionist...didn't take kindly to that...barged into "Diddy's" office...refused to leave...was thrown out by security...then "P. Diddy" emerged with twisted shades and an alleged busted mouth.
What a tale!!! Q45 is crying foul. As Elephant Man's manager, he has been approached for explanations for this false reporting. It is just not true he reportedly said.

Kanye West is ahead of 50 Cent - Album Sales
By: J Koni
50 Cent began eating his words within the first day of his "album sales" clash with Kanye West.
Numbers from Soundscan Building Charts showed West's "Graduation" selling 437,000 and 50's "Curtis" selling 310,000.
Kanye's last album, "Late Registration," debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 with opening sales of 860,000 copies and led the chart for two weeks. In other Kanye news, the rapper performed on Sunday's telecast of the Emmy Awards. And he will perform on the main stage, not in a party suite.
50 Cent pledges to quit the business as a solo artist if "Curtis" didn't outsell "Graduation Day." However, on Wednesday he was on New York's Hot 97 with Angie Martinez blaming his label, Interscope, for losing the sales war with Kanye. He is reported to have said, "To be honest, the process of selling this record hasn't been fun." "I'm happy with the performance, but I'm not happy with the set up. We had conference calls and after we created this plan, nobody actually had a plan," 50 Cent said. "It was the label," he continued. "They're dropping the ball all over the place. I'll release my next album and then I'm a free agent."

Legends mash up Reggae Explosion…and more
By: Joseph Cunningham
Photography By: Marcus Thompson
Reggae Explosion was the name of a recent tour that saw a number of Reggae legends shine in Japan. The likes of Marcia Griffiths, Mikey General and producing genius now performing artiste, Esco, formerly of the duo Leftside and Esco - did justice to the concert's name – as they all exploded on stage.
Interestingly, this was the first high-profile tour for Esco. He is now a solo artiste and is focusing on making this aspect of his career legendary. Amongst other cities the tour took him to Osaka, Japan, the home of the recently concluded World Athletics Championships. Hence, there is no question that a huge international audience got first hand looks at his style of onstage delivery.
"It was a wonderful experience," he said, adding that this is the kind of progression he has dreamt of making as a musician. "I want to take my music and productions and introduce them to a wide audience." A chief mastermind behind the mega hit in the Dancehall, titled," Tuck een yuh belly," Matthew 'Esco' Thompson has also been producer for the likes of Dancehall King Bounty Killer and other top artistes. Noteworthy is the fact that he is the force that has resurrected Future Fambo, formerly known as 'Future Troubles'; the man who delivered the mega hit "Kung Fu" in the early 1990s.
Esco has a number of singles in rotation on the Reggae airwaves such as "She Wants Me," "Toppa di World" and "God is Love."
There was absolutely no doubt that a split between him and Leftside earlier this year was not a planned action! Further, when asked about the case, Esco said that while there is no bitterness between himself and his former musical friend, he is disappointed that a difference in opinions with regards to royalties ended their link. He added, "I believe in loyalty over royalties at anytime. Money was not our problem, so it is really unfortunate."
Regardless of all that, Esco's life is on the "up and up" with the birth of his daughter a few months ago. He says he is thankful for a family life because it keeps him responsible and focused. "I live with my spouse and daughter. Knowing that I have other mouths to feed and to be an example for, brings welcomed changes to my life."
Under the auspices of his new management team, comprised of Anthony Brown and Rudegal, Esco is preparing to release his album titled, "Show Stopper." Look out for this one! Details about the album are not available, but to keep informed contact escodaschoker@gmail.com.

It's Payback Time - Danger Zone
Danger Zone has released another hit-making rhythm called "Payback". It comes on the heels of their successful "Jamdown" rhythm. Produced by Jigsy King and Delmar 'Della' Drummond, the new rhythm has 19 hard-hitting dancehall tracks with a few slow grooves intermingled.
Featuring some of Jamaica's hottest dancehall names, "Payback's" 19 tracks rest firmly on a rhythm that is not as high tempo as some of the popular beats today. Touted as one of the best that Danger Zone produced this year, "Payback" is riding a successful wave making it the dancehall rhythm to close off the summer.
Starting off with the indomitable Ce'Cile, "Payback" contains a good balance of youth and experience. Veterans featured include, Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Danger Zone's own Jigsy King and the up and coming star Cutty Corn.
Dancehall staple Vibez Kartel also make an appearance along with Elephant Man, Sizzla, Ras Fraser, Lukey D, Ginja, Mr Easy as well as Peppa featuring G Mafia. Capelton does his fare share with three tracks on the rhythm. "Payback" also features the much-anticipated return of Frisco Kid.
Breaking ground in the Caribbean. The rhythm is set to take off and will be aided by co-producer, Jigsy King's resurgence on the music scene with his new hit "Pon De Ends" Produced by DJ Sparks of Zip Fm.

"It's your boy" - MU-RCE
By: Joseph Cunningham
"It's your boy!" This intro has been steadily growing in popularity in the Dancehall arena, because it's the lyrical signature for MU-RCE, a new singjay sensation.
He describes himself as a deejay for the girls, and, he has been "living up". Songs like, "Please Call Me," "Mary Mary" and "Dancing Time," have been cementing him in the rough and tumble Dancehall arena. Those songs have been followed by his hit joint "In a Di Club", a single produced by internationally renown music producer Cordell 'Skatta' Burrell.
Speaking to YardFlex.com, MU-RCE revealed that at present he is promoting a new song called "Jump and Split"; a song that is creating a storm on the Jamaican airwaves. A video is in the pipeline. "The girls love my flow," he said, adding that he is comfortable with the level of acceptance he has received form the "hard to please" Jamaican audience.
Being the "girl's man" his image proclaims has linked him to controversy in recent times. A rumored love affair with hot Dancehall female singer Macka Diamond made the front page of one of Jamaica's leading tabloids recently. Responding when questioned about this he said, "I'm not selfish, I love to interact with the ladies. It does not always have to be more than friendship."
MU-RCE came to prominence six years ago with a song titled Come Back Home, which was produced by Cecil Williams. Since then he said it has not been all smooth, but his hard work is paying off. He thanks Claudette Kemp, manager for Dancehall superstar Capleton, for supporting his young career.
"I have always aspired to be a singer. As a matter of fact on career day while I was in high school, when I was asked what I want to do as a professional, I said a singer. So I am pursuing my dream," he said.
And, proof of his growing success exits with a number of international appearances in the next few weeks; in the United States of America, in Atlanta, Connecticut and in Miami, Florida.

Another Killa Protégé making their mark
By: Joseph Cunningham
Dancehall Kingpin Bounty Killa has an enviable record of mentoring Dancehall’s leading young talents. To date, Elephant Man, Mavado, Busy Signal, Wayne Marshall, Idonia, Vybz Kartel and even Merciless are just a few of the talents he has nurtured both directly and indirectly.
Interestingly, it was in one publication of the Time Magazine in the middle 1990s that Bounty Killa was compared to the late Tupac Shakur for the influence that he always has on young black males.
As such, it is no surprise whenever one hears about a new Dancehall talent that claims Bounty Killa as his or her influence!
Well, the latest of them is DNS, the abbreviation for Dohlance and Saylah. The duo is currently creating waves in the Dancehall with heavy rotation on Irie fm and Zip 103, two of Jamaica’s leading radio stations, with the song, "Wine Pon Wi" on the G Spot rhythm. The video for the song is also in heavy rotation on Music Plus.
Other singles in the streets are "Buss it on you" and "Pre War".
Norwayne Hills (Dohlance) age 24 and Kevin Blake (Saylah), 20, are both from the Duhaney Park community, and are aspiring to take their careers to the ultimate level of success. "It is very difficult for young artistes to get the break in the Dancehall," Dohlance said, but they are determined to keep rising to the top. " Music chose us, we neva choose it," they concurred.
They have both graced the stage at Bounty Killa in Concert, held in Negril in August, and have been visible on other high profile events. Working with producers Joel and Greevo at "Di Endz" a studio based in Portmore, St. Catherine, they are always preparing new material.
Savor their singles until the album is dropped real soon.

Asafa "9.74 seconds" Powell
By: Devon Anderson & Dwight Fraser
The world's fastest man Asafa Powell, achieved yet again an incredible feat, not impossible by his standards, as he shaved the world's best time of 9.77 seconds down to 9.74 seconds, in winning the men's 100 metres event at the Reti - Grand Prix - meeting in Italy on Sunday night.
The M.V.P sprinter established a personal, and season best, a year's leading and the second world record of his career in the heats of the event. In a legal trail wind of 1.7 metres per-second Powell got home ahead of Saidy Jaysuma of Norway whose time was 10.07 seconds and World Champion Kim Collins of St. Kitts who came third with 10.14 seconds.
The Jamaican erased the previous world leading time of 9.85 seconds done by American Tyson Gay,at the World Championship in Osaka.
A feat that some Yard Flex fans are hoping could have come in that same event against Tyson Gay at the World, stage in Japan.
Yard Flex spoke to someone in Asafa's MVP camp at Utech on Tuesday night, who explained that, "The best of Asafa is yet to come" and that Gay, "Must keep hiding from the "big man" who is peaking just about now."
That argument of Gay hiding from Powell has some merits as the American was due to face Powell On Friday September 14, in Belgium at the next Golden league meet, but told the organizers that he was tired, after competing in 9 races in eight days at the World Championship.
Yard Flex fans and the world will be looking on at Asafa Powell in Belgium.
Is there another record in the making?

Enkutatash (New Year) September 8, 2007

The Ethiopian New Year falls in September at the end of the big rains. The highlands turn to gold as the Meskel daisies burst out in all their splendor. Ethiopian children clad in brand new clothes dance through the villages giving bouquets of flowers and painted pictures to each household. September 11th is both New Year's Day and the Feast of St. John the Baptist.
The day is called Enkutatash meaning the "gift of jewels." When the famous Queen of Sheba returned from her expensive jaunt to visit King Solomon in Jerusalem, her chiefs welcomed her back by replenishing her treasury with enku or jewels. The spring festival has been celebrated since these early times and as the rains come to their abrupt end, dancing and singing can be heard at every village in the green countryside. After dark on New Year's Eve people light fires outside their houses.
In Ethiopia more than 34,000 Jamaicans reportedly gathered from all across the world to ring in the new millennium. Jamaicans at home turned out in huge numbers on what was New Years eve and the celebrations were intense – very moving and spiritual overall. About a thousand strong rammed Mandela Park where speeches, drumming and movement were the order of the day until 8:00PM.
Livity Restaurant kept the festive mood alive until a little past midnight with an intimate and spirit filled concert. "A naw tell no lie," Sister Isis, the show's host said, "But I really wanted to be in Ethiopia tonight." Everyone could relate to that strong sentiment and still boundless joy was thick in the Livity Restaurant air.
Artistes and cultural icons rolled in and gave their contributions – affording attendees a priceless gift. Among those who not only performed, but hung out, milling around and interacting with all the "Family" in the house, were: Sister Carol, Etana, Empress, Jackie "Mutamba" Cohen, Ikebulan and Tarrus Riley.
"I had to participate - because it is a "Glorious Day" – Etana told Yardflex.

Happy Earth Day Elephant Man

This was the common phrase last night, September 11, 2007 at Elephant Man’s Earth Day Celebrations in Kingston. What a party it was – coinciding with the Ethiopian New Millennium celebrations – it was the cherry on top. Elephant man was lauded with good wishes by one and all and he was in a jovial mood, all decked out in a serious gold studded white outfit and wicked shoes too.
Sending out the most moving message of the evening, Ele's 13 year old daughter took the mike to introduce herself and wish her dad a very Happy Earth Day. Flanked by well wishers including, Kip Ritch, Blasse, John Hype, Shelly Belly, Kid Corrupt, MOB, Harry Toddler and many more, Ele often hung onto two bottles of the finest in champagne.
The DJ spinning tunes made sure to big up Elephant Man's mother, saying that without her none of this would be possible. He also honored Ele’s ladies and baby-mothers emphasizing the need for each one to know that "Everything cool," with no need for any contention on that night.

All Roads Lead to Ethiopia for the Millennium Celebration September 11, 2007

On September 11, 2007 at midnight in Ethiopia, the New Year and New Millennium celebrations began amid lavish gatherings, religious zeal and positive messages from the country’s troubled government. Ethiopia and Ethiopians throughout the world marked this day with immense enthusiasm and will continue to celebrate for days to come.
In the 6th Century, the rest of the Christian world made revisions in its estimate of the date of Christ’s birth - but Ethiopia kept the old date, which means that 7 years after the rest of the world, the country is marking the start of the year 2000.
For Rastafarians worldwide, recognizing and aligning with the calendar of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Ethiopia (a unique slightly modified Julian calendar) has been a part of their lifestyle and today Rastas everywhere have begun to commemorate the beginning of the year 2000.
Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, reportedly expressed his hope for a new millennium that would usher in a new era of prosperity for this Horn of Africa nation. He said, “The last few centuries of the millennium have not been as glorious, every generation of Ethiopians during those centuries has paid in blood to maintain our independence.” As the only African nation that has never been colonized, Ethiopia has always been revered and honored – especially amongst Rastafarians.
In Jamaica, the Ethio-Africa Diaspora Union Millennium Council have organized a series of events in honor of the occasion. Taking place over two days the celebrations had a pre-cursor – in the form of a special event to mark the anniversary of the birth of Mortimo Planno that happened on September 6.
On September 11, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Entertainment and Culture, the Millennium celebration event took the Mandela Park in Half Way Tree from 12:00 noon until 8:00PM. In addition to dignitaries like Barry Chevannes, Dr. Nafitsu Kagne (Senegal’s first Ambassador to Jamaica) and other African Diplomats, Sam Clayton, from the group The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari, will make presentations.
The Mystic Revelation will entertain along with the Nyabinghi Ancient Order and Drummers, the BoboShante, School of Vision and other Mansions. Artistes like, Tony Rebel, Queen Ifrica, Sizzla, Tarrus Riley,Tommy Cowan and others will alwo grace the stage with musical millennium presentations.
At The Livity Restaurant in Kingston, the celebration continues on September 11.
On September 12, 2007, the revelry continues with a special Millennium Dinner to be held at the Hilton Hotel in Kingston – at the poolside – beginning at 6pm.
Across the island, the official Nyabinghi Ises will be taking place at Scotts Pass Nyabinghi Center in Clarendon form September 10th until September 17th. In Ochio Rios on September 12th the Nyabinghi order will also gather to celebrate.
Ethiopians will attend different events, and three main parties have been planned. Many free festivities took place and there will be a year long celebration there. Many Rastafarians, some of whom are members of the 12 Tribes of Israel have taken what seems like a pilgrimage to join in the celebrations.

Antigua’s WarDadli SoulJahs takes home “Philly Link Up Sound Clash” Trophy
Antigua’s sound system giants, WarDadli SoulJahs were featured for the first time ever in the USA on August 30, 2007, as they rocked the Fluid Night Club in Philadelphia during the “Philly Link Up Sound Clash.” Known for always representing Antigua, as champion jugglers as well as for clashing, WarDadli SoulJahs took the trophy home to Antigua following their crowning by the Philly crowds’ popular vote.
It was a “one on one” sound clash against Brooklyn New York’s very own, Generations Sound, and the first leg of their 2 city tour. Held at home to most of the reggae sound clashes in that state, the clash was attended by over a hundred patrons who voted in WarDadli in 2 out of 3 rounds and 4 to 3 in the “tune fi tune” round.
A fresh variety of tunes rang out from both sides, but the older and vintage reggae songs were the order of the night. Artists like the great Junior Reid, Bunny Wailer, Shabba Ranks, and Johnny Osbourne were what WarDadli focused on most; and they came out on top. Notable tunes played by WarDadli were an ARP special, a Silvertones special, the late great Joseph Hill of the group Culture, and the living legend David Hinds of Steel Pulse.
WarDadli showed their creativity, intelligence and talent as emcee Dangerous, and Selecta G, worked in near flawless chemistry; captivating the Philadelphia crowd - displaying what the Antiguan sound is made of. In thanking the patrons, particularly those from the Caribbean region who attended, Wardadli made it clear that, “We may come from a little dot on the world map, but we make our voices loud and our presence known.”
Then it was on to the after party at Club William Pehn, where, Wardadli juggled tunes to the delight of particularly the many female patrons there. Amazed to see an Antiguan sound in full party mode with plenty of hype and vigor, straight after being victorious in a dub plate battle, the crowd fell right in and grooved to their vibe.
The rest of the tour involved performing in South Bronx, at the Entertainers Night Club. Dubbed "Reprezent," the party there was hosted by a famous Bronx\Antiguan DJ - Skerrit Bwoy.
Many sound systems from around the globe were billed on the card that night, including a Japanese Sound called King Jam and a Jamaican sound called Gary Chucks. WarDadli put on a full hundred performance that night. They did so well that the owners of Entertainers Night Club and Skerrit Bwoy himself invited the SoulJahs again to perform the following night; at their weekly Sunday night dance called “Bad Gyal Sundays”.
Holding down a solid vibe for hours, in the club that was full of patrons, thrust Wardadli in superstar mode again as the selectors were seen outside the venue, meeting and taking photos with the public…mainly the ladies, afterwards.

Craig Serani Beats up the charts
Craig "Serani" Marsh is a member of the hit making trio Daseca and has been kicking out hit songs for a number of years now. His beat creating skills have gone widely unnoticed but the unassuming genius has been responsible for rhythms such as the hugely popular Anger Management, Chaka Chaka, Dreaming, Gully Creature, Build Back and Fire Links’ Gullyside rhythm to name just a few.
Described by many as the musical director of Bounty Killer’s “Alliance” talent pool, Serani also crafted the lead phrase on Sean Paul's Billboard smash, "We Be Burning," as well as on singles such as Tony Matterhorn's anthemic "Dutty Wine," Busy Signal's "These Are the Days," Bugle's breakout hit "Exercise," Elephant Man's "Willie Bounce," and Mavado's international hit "Dying," the first track on which he also featured as an Artiste; It is Serani's voice bawling "Dying" throughout the song, which earned him attention for his vocals, instead of his dexterity as a composer. He also appeared alongside Mavado in the acclaimed video.
Also instrumental in the careers of Mavado, Alaine and Bugle, Serani continually demonstrates his passion for nurturing young artists. That passion and energy is now being channeled into launching his own solo career as a singer.
Current Dancehall bubbler "Don't!" features Serani and his protege Bugle, and is getting huge response in Dancehalls across Jamaica It is already one of the biggest tracks in Kingston - the Dancehall capitol of the world. Ace video director Julia Braham is set to get behind the lens and shoot the video for "Don't" very soon. The track, of course, is produced by Serani.
Serani is now busy constructing his debut album, focusing on the raunchy "She Loves Me" as the next single which Serani is hoping will blow up internationally. "It’s a fun track," says Serani. "A topic everyone can relate to. We have a clean version and a very, very raw version, we will leave it to the public to decide which one they prefer!"

Port Royal Music Festival, A Night Amongst The Stars

Thousands of patrons gathered at the Port Royal Music Festival over the weekend to enjoy a marriage of sounds between Jamaica's lover's rock and Black America's R&B soul music. The audience sang along to some of their favorites as the likes of One Third, Maxi Priest, Regina Bell, Brian McKnight, and Tarrus Riley performed.
There were a number of cameo appearances from some of Reggae's best musicians, who just dropped in to enjoy the show. This included the likes of Beres Hammond, Richie Stephens, Jah Cure, Fanton Moja, Della Manley and Delly Ranks who could be seen enjoying themselves.
The night opened up with newcomers One Third delivering some heavy covers. They awed the audience with their delivery, melodies, and harmonies. However, Maxi Priest was exceptional and the ladies screamed for more each time he belted out a note, giving his fans a cross generational number of hits. The highlight of his performance was when he called his son Marvin on stage to perform with him. It was a treat to see the young protege walk in his father's shoes.
Regina Bell gave a performance of a life time. The energy that she put into her show was breathtaking. She felt right at home as she explained to the audience that she had been performing in Jamaica since the 80's and would always hold a piece of the island in her heart. "Please Be Mine," "So Many Tears", and "Without You" were some of the hit singles that she performed for the insatiable audience who just couldn't get enough.
"More and More", "Comfortable", "Back at One", and other Brian McKnight songs were highly anticipated by the audience as they sang along with him as if the songs were their personal anthems. His set was very energetic and funky and his sons joined him onstage to deliver a few major hits from the disco era. A rendition of Prince's "Lets Go Crazy" was played on guitar by his 15 year old son Cole Nicholas, he played it as if he were Prince himself. Eighteen year old Brian Jr. was the ladies favorite.
By the time the McKnight's finished performing and the next band changed, most of the patrons had departed. Tarrus Riley, originally booked to performed earlier in the night, closed the show. He delivered a short but sweet set and was the only performer for the night to get a forward. Jimmy Riley and Leroy Sibbles were booked for the show but never performed as the venue was empty and the night so full.

King Yellow Re-Crowned at Summerfest LA
Photos By: Marie Mendoza

Queen Mary Park in Long Beach California was immersed in mellow and positive vibes on * date when MVP Productions threw down their first Sumerfest LA reggae festival. Planning on making this an annual event, MVP ***look on site for info
Some of reggae’s heavy hitters were in the house and concert goers made no qualms about showing how much they adored the performances. Huge amounts of love permeated the place and audience members demonstrated their feelings through tumultuous applause. King Yellowman was "crowned again" by patrons who went beserk when he appeared on stage.
The dancehall DJ legend who rose to iconic stature over # of years, was missed on the regular festival circuit and Long Beach sure did show him how much. Rushing the stage an enthusiastic crowd absolutely roared as they grooved to his tracks. Energy propelled energy and King Yellow gave some serious high energy moves to a cheering crowd. Hamming it up, Yellow man, referred to by one fan as, just as good if not better than he was in the 80’s, had people laughing hysterically at his wit as he had many jokes up his sleeve.

With the crowd in the palm of his hand this undisputed dancehall ruler, performed songs like, "Come Back Darling" and the Elvis driven, "Blueberry Hill." Dancehall DJ greats outnumbered singers on a roster that included Lady G, Ninja Man, Beenie Man, Lady Saw and culture master, I Wayne.
I Wayne’s stern yet gentle persona, coupled with that smooth voice and almost floating stage presence gave him big props – especially with the ladies.
DJ divas, Lady G and Lady Saw gave their all. Everyone was singing along as Lady G enchanted the crowd. Always maintaining a "level head," she performed "Enough Respect" connecting with the women and her "dope" performance included a song about anti child abuse. Just the mention of her name had the crowd went in a frenzy… then Lady Saw took to the stage, full of energy and charisma. She performed songs like, "Right Rope You Walked" and "No Less Than a Woman,” dedicating the latter to all females.
Draped in a white suit, Ninja Man got on stage and the crowd went ballistic. This was the first time he had ever appeared in LA and people made him feel loved. Dancing the entire time, his hungry fans just gobbled it up. Performing songs like, "Murder Dem" and "Girls Dm Suga," Ninja Man was "killin it" on stage.
When Beenie Man appeared, the crowd went absolutely nuts. Flags and hands were waving in the air as The Doctor had the crowd chanting. Wayne Wonder and Lady Saw joined Beenie Man on stage for a special performance. Paying tribute to Bob Marley, Beenie Man ended off with the song "Redemption."
Also appearing were Bascome X, who gave a solid show, Boom Tony, who swooned the ladies, E-Dee, Jamina and Ninja, as well as Mello Banton and Bugsy Malone all of whom performed well.

Pulse Caribbean Model Search 2007 brings out the finest

There was a fashion explosion at Kingston's Hilton hotel on September 7 as Pulse Model Agency's, Caribbean Model Search (CMS) 2007 got underway. Spoken of as the largest and most dynamic talent search in the history of the Caribbean, CMS has showcased thousands of model hopefuls from across the Caribbean over the years. This year the search expanded to include models from the UK and parts of the United States and Canada.
Ninety-five contestants of whom 17 were male, graced the catwalk in different dashing outfits, all created by Caribbean designers. Judges were in place to sift out the top three in each group of Fashion Model, Petite Model and Male Model. An enthusiastic audience encouraged the contestants who all did remarkably well even with the one mishap that saw a CMS hopeful slip and fall on the catwalk.

Among the many petite models vying for the CMS '07 crown was the youngest daughter of the late Garnet Silk, Waszero Smith. Strutting her stuff with elegance, Waszero wore Kenya Linton designs. Entering in the petite category, Waszero was not successful in being chosen as one of the three petites who will be presented for the finals. "I was disappointed at first, but now that has worn off," a determined Waszero said after the contest. She will be modeling regardless…and will be entering again.
Three fashion models and three male models were also chosen as semi finalists at last night’s big event; that will go down in history as the time great modeling careers began. Pulse has prepared many models blazing a trail for them in the Caribbean, with many of their top models climbing quickly to the helm of the international modeling scene.

First Passa Passa Session following elections – green and nice

While Portia Simpson Miller was being criticized as a sore loser for not having accepted the initial preliminary counts that saw her party losing by a close margin at the September 3rd General Elections in Jamaica, the Jamaica Labor Party’s (JLP) supporters and friends were reveling at the “Party Capital of the World” – Passa Passa.
Held every Wednesday night at one traditional JLP stronghold – Tivoli Gardens, in Kingston, Passa Passa holds a steady vibe with kicking sounds from Swatch Sound System as the foundation. On Thursday morning, September 6, the first Pass Passa dance following JLP victory was sweeeeeeeet, and it also featured Stone Love Sound who came on to heat up the place at an early 6:30AM.
It was Passa Passa – as usual till the sun came up and more…with dancers entertaining busloads of people on the way the work on Thursday morning. Some partyers were clad in the green colors of JLP – at this particular Passa Passa – and all were in a celebratory mood. “It is not really as I had expected,” one party goer exclaimed. She was expecting more green and just a bigger JLP presence.

Hutchy releases"Take Charge"
After ten years in the business of music, Hutchy has decided to take a walk down the recording road. The release of his gritty remix single "Take Charge" comes shortly after the world was introduced to his critically acclaimed album "My Time." Both were released on Hutchy's own Ruff Cut Records label.
"Take Charge" has been described as social commentary at its best and is a timely reminder of the perils of bad leadership. With multiple lessons embedded in its powerful lyrics, the song is fit for all ages. Recorded on one of Hutchy's signature One Drop rhythms, "Take Charge" commands your attention, forcing you to listen.
Reminiscent of the golden days of reggae, the song has been getting airplay on major international stations, including some in New York's Tri State area. Cable and college radio are loving up the tunes, with the CMJ charts reporting "My Time" as the 4th most added album for 2 weeks in a row. There are plans to release a video shortly.

LUTAN FYAH SHOOTS VIDEOS FOR NEW TRACKS
Lutan Fyah shot two videos for his latest singles "Four Seasons" and "St. Jago de la Vega," last week. Video viewers are in for a treat with both. "Four Seasons," a love song is depicted in eloquent romantic scenes that feature Sasha Leigh Gordon, a Miss Jamaica World 2007 contestant.
The video sees Sasha fashioned for each season as Lutan expresses his love for his queen in all four seasons. "Four Seasons" was produced by Kevin 'Iceberg' Blake with video direction by Realizm Films’ Marlon Brown and Robin Chin.

Junior Kelly makes a masterpiece with “Prince of Roots”
By:OIimattaTaal
Junior Kelly has returned from a successful tour in Europe and finished his new album entitled Prince of Roots. "I tour pretty much every summer, going to new territories. Sometimes you present the music for the first time to people, the first time dem hear reggae, u make history," describes the artist of his recent experience.
Gracing fans around the world in Spain, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Austria, France, Poland, and other countries Junior Kelly expresses that even though he traveled to many areas, "There are many places yearning to greet Reggae's ambassadors. Countries like Indonesia, the Middle East, China, North and South Korea, Israel want to see us, I been doing drops for them. We'll be getting there soon."
The concept of Kelly's newest album "Prince of Roots" derives from looking at how the music has deteriorated and making it a masterpiece. "The quality and texture of the music is not the same. The hype is dampening the music, hindering it. So when we are creating, we try to get some new spice, different tracks that will bring out the highlights," Kelly explains.
The new album has different musical flavours like blue grass, punk rock and hard rock. "I like meddling with different music and coming up with different concoctions. It starts something that is vibrant, exotic, and unique. Making something that can’t be tainted, something to nourish and cherish," beams Kelly as he discusses “Prince of Roots."
His most recent album "Tough Life" granted him rave reviews through the popular single "Receive" and other hits. His recent duet "Missing You" with singer Barbee continues to remain in rotation as a favourite. Not one to stray far from his roots, Junior Kelly continues to show consistency with delivering quality music for over a decade.

Irie Jamboree was everything patrons wanted and some

New York: Irie Jamboree 2k7 lived up to its reputation as being North America's premier reggae festival with another first class production that music pundits are saying may have eclipsed the spectacular presentation last year. The event held recently at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens, New York attracting well over 30,000 music lovers who were engaged by spectacular performances from Morgan Heritage, Stephen Marley, Jr. Gong, Tony Matterhorn, Munga, Macka Diamond, Etana and Da'Ville.
Legendary reggae outfit Morgan Heritage delivered arguably the best performance of event. The talented reggae group was in fine nick, delivering classic hits like " Don't Have Fe Dread To Be Rasta," "Tell Me How Come," "Down By The River," "People Are Fighting," "Set Yourself Free," "Protect Us Jah" and their current hit “Brooklyn & Jamaica” that left fans in a frenzy.
Singer Luciano had his moments in the spotlight but his overall performance lacked the intensity that would put him over the top, while singer Da'Ville charmed fans with "On My Mind," "Can't Get Over You," "This Time I Promise" and "So I'll Wait For You."
When Lady Saw pranced on stage, the crowd roared in anticipation. The legendary dancehall diva showed restrain in her song choice but still earned a positive reception from her many admirers. High point of her set came when she called on her friend Mavado, who buss the place with his current hit 'Wha Dem A Do."
Beenieman was not able to duplicate his spectacular Sumfest performance, although he gradually came into his own midway his set. Assassin's performance was lively and certainly one of the best I have seen. Mr. Vegas and Mr. Easy represented well, however the artiste New Yorkers wanted to see was Tony Matterhorn, who was making his first outdoor appearance as a DJ in New York. Performing in a specially made alien suit and sounding as crisp as ever, the DJ worked the crowd with "Dutty Wine," "Goodas Fe Dem" and earned kudos from the massive. Aside from a few risqué songs, the Man From Mars was well received by his fans.
The original fireman Anthony B came with his ball of fire and brought the curtain down with a spirited, high energy, fun filled performance that shows that he still has not lost his edge. Munga Honorable who was appearing for the first time in a major performance at a New York event, was warmly received by fans. The Gangsta Ras ruled the stage with popular hits like "Bad From Mi Born," "Wine Pon It," "Bad Like I," and "Not At All," that we delivered with passion and precision.
Several young, upcoming acts left an impressive mark at Irie Jamboree. Leading the charge were Etana, Jovi Rockwell, One Third, New York based acts Empress Isis, Ras David, Ras Penco, the talented Hench Man, and Lady Ann who all performed in the opening "Give De Youth A Buss" segment.
The festival climaxed with Stephen Marley who delivered songs from his debut album 'Mind Control." Highlight of his performance came when he was joined on stage by his younger brother Jr. Gong. It was two years ago that the young Marley delivered a stellar performance at the same venue. This year he was more restrained but still managed to stamp his authority with a two song medley which included his monster hit "Welcome to Jamrock."
Overall Irie Jamboree was a smashing success. The mood was positive and upbeat, the performances solid and the décor of the park certainly ranks among the best I have seen in the tri-state. Kudos to the production team for delivering another quality event that ranks on par with the best in the world.

Portia Simpson Miller outgoing Prime Minister of Jamaica finally conceded the defeat suffered by her People’s National Party (PNP) in Jamaica’s September 3rd General Elections. With Bruce Golding and his Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) supporters shifting further into celebration mode, the table is set for changes and the first real one will come as an ease to the pockets of tuition fee payers – like now…
Jamaica’s Electoral Office has put the official count at 32 seats for JLP and 28 for PNP. This prompted Simpson Miller’s statement that declared, “The People’s National Party accepts the announced preliminary results while reserving all rights under the Jamaican constitution and our electoral laws.” The official count is still underway.
Voter turnout at Monday’s election was a pathetic 60% of the eligible voters in Jamaica.

Watch out for Wyclef Jean’s fall release of “The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant”
Wyclef Jean -- the Grammy Award-winning musician, producer, hip-hop pioneer, and humanitarian who founded the legendary ensemble the Fugees -- returns to Columbia Records with "The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant," the artist's first full-length album for the label since his third solo album, "Masquerade," entered the Billboard Top 200 at number 6 in June 2002. "The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant" is slated for release this fall.
With "The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant," his sixth full-length studio album, Wyclef Jean continues the autobiographical musical odyssey he began a decade ago with his 1997 triple-platinum debut solo album, "Wyclef Jean Presents The Carnival Featuring Refugee All-Stars" (aka "The Carnival"). Wyclef gave his fans their first taste of "The Carnival II" with the release of the album's lead-in single, "Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)," featuring Akon, Lil' Wayne and introducing Niia. Released in August, the single rapidly made its first Billboard chart appearance entering the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart at number 3. "Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)" is now available digitally.
According to Wyclef, "The Carnival II" is "a continuation of 'Gone Till November" (his 1997 Top 10 signature hit from "The Carnival"). I focus a lot on the songwriting." For his much anticipated new album, Wyclef has once again called upon his friends, showcasing his musical dexterity as he draws from an extraordinary and diverse roster of collaborating guest artists including Paul Simon (on "Fast Car"), Mary J. Blige, T.I., Norah Jones, Akon, Serj Tankian (of System Of A Down) (on "Trouble Again"), Lil' Wayne, and Shakira, to name a few. Wyclef produced the entire album with his long-time production partner, Jerry "Wonda" Duplessis, with whom he has worked since the beginning of the Fugees.
"The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant" is the first full-length album from Wyclef Jean since 2006, when the artist struck a chord in mass pop consciousness with "Hips Don't Lie," the chart-topping Grammy-nominated international smash hit duet with Shakira.

Yendi Phillips, Miss Jamaica World 2K7 says she was a "Tom Boy"! Oh yes!
By: Joseph Cunningham
The stunningly beautiful young woman was never the girl who would put on her mother's high heels and model around the house. Instead, as she put it during one television interview, " the thug would always come out."
Interviewing a number of her high school mates, they all concurred that Yendi's beauty was undeniable, but they refused to categorize their beloved friend as a "Tom Boy". They preferred to underscore her "down-to-earth" personality. " She could always be seen liming with girls of different levels, whether it was seniors or juniors; an she was a senior," Huldah Cunningham recalled. She added, " I was not even sure that she remembered who I was until I saw a surprise message in my inbox! She doesn't seem to have forgotten her beginnings."
It is a common sentiment that Yendi Phillips is indeed, "Beauty with a Purpose”. The segment of every beauty contest that oftentimes brings about the demise of contestants was obviously as easy as the Jamaican breeze for Phillips! She showed-off what was a pronounced "wide vocabulary", never caught searching for the right word at any moment.
Accordingly, her political and social ambitions come as no surprise. "I want to use this platform to affect changes," she said. After the passage of hurricane Dean through Jamaica, Miss Jamaica World toured the island to get her own "eye view" of damages. She did this because she said she wishes to be part of her country's development on a routine basis.
The second of two children, and the holder of a Bachelor of Arts degree, it is her desire to introduce art programmes to inner-city children, but in a recreative form. After school programmes for unfortunate children is part of her developmental vision. Miss Jamaica also holds a Masters Degree in Entertainment Management.
At the actual Miss Jamaica contest she got a bastion of support from a large portion of the audience. And, she said she only entered the contest because she wanted the victory and was confident she had a great chance. Yendi entered the competition after being prodded to action for five years by her model agency, Saint International.
Now her attention is on Shangai, China for the Miss World Pageant, and, she is in the gym everyday toning and grooming, doing weight training and Cardio twice daily- cycling and running. Phillips is also fine tuning her familiarity with the Chinese culture.
Like Nanny of the Maroons, Merlene Ottey, Veronica Campbell, Lisa Hanna and Cindy Brakespear, Yendi Phillips is preparing to cause the world to admire Jamaica while in awe.

Caribbean Day Parade 2007 Largest in History

Eastern Parkway in Brookly, New York was the scene of great revelry as another Caribbean Day Parade was held. The Labour Day weekend has historically been a day of heavy feting for national of the Caribbean regions and their friends. Most prominent at the annual West Indian Caribbean day parade were Haitians and Trinidadians who displayed a joint float promoting their Christian faith. The float expressed the sentiments of many in attendance with its prophetic message - "Start to pray today, because you may not be here tomorrow."
There were an estimated one million people in attendance at the parade. Despite the prayer message displayed on the float, at least one person's prayers went unanswered as he became the lone reported casualty of the day. At around 4:00 p.m., gunshots rang out in excess at Troy Avenue, which left one 26 year-old man injured with two gun shots to his leg. The injuries are considered non-life threatening.

Among the one million attendees were Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Governor Elliott Spitzer. Their attendance was significant in many respects, not the least of which is the apparent change of heart by City and State officials who deemed this parade as being just as important as other ethnic parades in the City. In the recent past, City officials have displayed their disdain for the Caribbean diaspora by imposing strict bans on the use and sale of alcohol. It has been reported that this policy was not applied equally to all parades throughout the City and appeared to improperly target Caribbean-Americans.
This year, however, the attendance of Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Spitzer showed that these two politicians understand the value of Caribbean-Americans to the New York metropolitan area. The throngs of revelers inject millions of dollars into the New York economy, and increasingly demonstrate their potential political capital by participating more and more in the local electoral process. Despite the unfortunate shooting, by and large the parade was a tremendous success and demonstrates the ability of Caribbean peoples from all islands to coalesce and party together peacefully.
Parade watchers reported seeing flags flying from several nations, including Jamaica, Antigua, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Grenada, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Not to be outdone, flags also were displayed by the people of St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Barbados and others.

Portia Faces Failure – Cries Foul; while Bruce Golding and Jamaica Labor Party Celebrate

Following heavy criticism on her Hurricane Dean response and a perceived lame contribution to the national debate , 61 year old Portia Simpson Miller, Jamaica’s first female Prime Minister was ousted on Monday September 3rd and her People’s National Party (PNP) ended its 20 years in power.
Whether In denial or just harboring wishful thinking, Simpson Miller, known also as "Sista P," and "Mama P," reportedly refused to concede with the numbers remaining unconvinced that preliminary results are indicative of the final reality of the Jamaica Labor Party being the newly elected leaders of Jamaica’s Government.
Widely touted as the luckiest politician around, Bruce Golding led the JLP, to a razor thin margin of a win that saw his party gobble up just 31 of the 60 seats in the House of Representatives. However, former Prime Minister, Simpson Miller has complained of irregularities and said there were races that could change current results with a recount.
These were extremely close calls, but until the final count is in, the results will remain with JLP on top. According to international observer electoral teams, the elections were, "free, fair and credible."
Voters gathered in front of the various polling stations across Jamaica yesterday – with many of them clad in the party colors of either green for JLP or orange for PNP. Those clearly identifying their political preference made extra effort to stay away from each other.
With final count beginning this morning, Jamaica's Electoral Commission says it typically takes two days for election officers to check all ballots in all 60 precincts. The plain speaking Simpson Miller, known well for her support of the poor, is continually crying foul despite reassurance reportedly given by Albert Ramdin, assistant secretary-general of the Organization of American States, who led the 40 member team of observers. Ramdin insists that the election can stand international scrutiny.
Alleging that candidates campaigned past the mandated cutoff point – and by doing so broke election rules, Simpson Miller claimed candidates were actually "buying votes." Feeling that a criminal element was in control of some of the voting process, the former Prime Minister reported that some party members were involuntarily prevented from voting.
In March, 2006 Simpson Miller was chosen by party delegates to replace retiring former Prime Minister, P.J. Patterson.
Golding, 58, has made many promises and Jamaican's are eager to see these issues brought to the forefront. Already discussion around the free education for all secondary students is buzzing amongst community members, anxious to see Golding walk his talk. Golding said, JLP intends to realize success by among other measures, streamlining government bureaucracy and attracting foreign investment.
The son of a former MP, Golding is no stranger to the political environment as he was only two years old when his dad was first elected to represent West St Catherine. Tacius Golding held that seat for 22 years until retiring in 1972.
Poised to implement policies and legislation that will ease the deep-rooted poverty, create jobs and reduce criminal activity in Jamaica, Golding and his jubilant supporters started their new journey on Monday night, driving through the streets of Kingston and other areas, honking horns and singing Bob Marley's "Coming In From The Cold," among other chants.
The tension of election time in Kingston city has eased, but the memory of the virtual ghost town that developed since the early afternoon of election day is indelible. There were rare episodes of violence reported when opposing party backers quarreled and fired shots at each other. Police and soldiers, who were in full force and swarming around everywhere, quickly squashed that incident and any other.

Concert and Symposium in honor of Peter Tosh
By: Joseph Cunningham
Bullet! Kaboom! Bung bang beng! These are the most popular slang's in the Dancehall arena currently. Well, whatever are the intensions of the current crop of Dancehall acts, one thing is certain, and that is, they are not the first “fearsome” characters to grace the world stage.
Peter Tosh, the "Stepping Razor" epitomized and exemplified how lethal "lyrical shots" can be! His approach was unquestionable, and meant to solve political and social issues through music.
His character was a controversial one being unarguably the first real "Reggae Rebe," never afraid to address issues that had many of his counterparts running scared! Reggae music has always been a genre that has represented and amplified the voice of the poor and the oppressed, and Peter Tosh used the genre to do just that.
Worrel King, the brain behind the upcoming event, Tribute to Peter Tosh does not like the title promoter, so Yardflex addresses him as show organizer. He agrees that Tosh effectively used Reggae music as a tool to empower himself and the world. Worrel said, “His mind set was that financial reward was not the ultimate achievement. He was on a mission, like a minister of music. Just like men who were inspired by God to write the bible, Peter Tosh was anointed by God as a musician.”
During a one-hour interview, King thoroughly described Tosh’s character. He revealed that he never had a daily relationship with Tosh, but studied his works very closely.
It is the unexplored musical and general genius of Tosh that has been inspiring King to make "the presentation" for the last 15 years. "He never went through the formal educational system, but he was a scholar in the school of life" King said. He made reference to a line from one of Tosh's songs, which said, "If you wanna live treat me right." The song itself explains that by loving each other and respecting life, we will remain alive even in death, through the memories of persons whose lives we've touched.
As well, King recons that Tosh's physical appearance was by special divine ordination. All who saw and knew Tosh spoke of the thrilling sensation that his very appearance and presence transmitted, and King said, "He had an air of mystery about him."
Peter Tosh attained black-belt qualification at Karate. He would also ride a unicycle while onstage, brandish a guitar with the shape of an M-16, and utter spell binding vocals. Furthermore, Tosh can be called a prophet as well! In his song "When the dollar dies" he foretold the demise of the local currency and the day when money has no power! He preached and prophesied about the freedom of the black race, about the day when colour would be no restriction and blacks in South Africa would be respected.
Tribute to Peter Tosh will take place at Independence Park in Westmoreland on October 19, and will be preceded by a candle vigil in Belmont, his birthplace in Westmoreland. Mint tea will be served throughout the vigil, an herb greatly loved by Tosh.
A symposium will be held at the University of the West Indies (UWI), which will include film festival in Tosh's memory. Guest presenter at the symposium will be Herby Miller, Tosh's lifetime manager.
On the 19th the day's activities will commence at 10:00 am with interviews and Peter Tosh selections all day, until 6:00 pm when live performances begin. A special feature during performances will be the appearance of Bushman, who has recently completed an album called "Bushman sings the Bush Doctor".
Additionally, King revealed that the quality of Tosh's music has been garnering phenomenal attention with the current resurgence of Reggae on the international mainstream. Notably, he says word has reached him that an Anglican Bishop is lobbing that two Reggae songs, one from Bob Marley and Peter Tosh be included in the Anglican hymnal.
"Peter is still living within the cosmic of himself," he asserted.

General Degree keeps highest standards with clothing line and new release
General Degree returned to the forefront of Reggae culture with firstly, his clothing line and now, he is completing his latest album, "Bedroom Bully." In an interview yesterday, he promised that as the name insinuates, the album would be one that is a vintage General Degree stylistic, with great wordplay, catchy lyrics and good quality rhythms. A date of release is not yet confirmed, but Look out for it!
Born Burt Cardiff on April 28, 1968 in the parish of Manchester, Jamaica, General Degree's love for music began at age six when as a child he often hid from his strict Christian parents in order to get a taste of what was happening on the airwaves. As he grew older he played the radio a little louder, listening keenly to the lyrical styles of Lt Stitchie, Papa San and Professor Nuts and he developed his own unique style of comical story telling/DJing.
General Degree developed his stage name by adopting the "General" from "General Trees" one of his mentors, and the "Degree" because of its "University Rank" meaning, which evidently describes the standard by which this hard hitting entertainer works. After sneaking out at nights to dances and hanging around the sound systems, the tailor by day saved enough money to travel to Kingston to make his first recording entitled "Circle Mandeville." He instantly became one of Mandeville's hottest talents. To achieve his dreams of international success General Degree moved to Kingston, the capital of the dancehall music.
He came out with a blockbuster hit "Granny," a dialogue between a granny and her grandson. In order to move to the next level, and not to be stereotyped, Degree wasted no time. No longer using his granny voice, he went on to work with some of the best reggae producers in the business, such as Donovan Germaine (Penthouse), Bobby "Digital B" Dixon, Dave Kelly (Madhouse), Sly and Robbie, along with Steelie and Cleevie. At the close of 1993, Degree signed a management contract with Main Street Records. He once again combined his talents with Danny Brownie on "Pianist" dubbed the most controversial song for 1993, which went up the charts.
After his 1997 self-entitled work, "Degree", General worked on his new album "Bush Baby" which featured some of Degree¹s best work ever. "Bush Baby" featured 16 tracks like Miss Gotti, Traffiic Blocking, Boom Boom, Pleasure Tour, the title track, Bush Baby, and lets not forget his duets with Red Rat and Maxi Priest.
In music in general and in dancehall in particular, sometimes only the sound of an artist's voice sets him or her apart from others, and Degree's hearty chatting is appealing in its forceful yet fun-loving zeal. Bush Baby is a nice display of his talent, a showcase of strict dancehall undiluted by pop sentiment (save perhaps for the irritating Maxi Priest duet "Baby Boo" and the cutesy title cut). Aside from the two previously mentioned tracks, highlights include the rousing "Signal" and "She Miss Mi Now," which has a crossover edge, along with the Ward 21 produced "Bag a Things" and "Buss Mi Door," which rides the Heavy Metal riddim used on Buccaneer's "Bruk Out".

I-WAYNE REFINES REGGAE ROOTS BACK TO ITS PUREST FORM
The mystic soprano sound of I-Wayne will disarm fans once again with VP’s sophomore release "Book Of Life," set to be released in November 2007. Not many roots and culture artists can say that they have landed a hit on major urban/hip-hop radio as I-Wayne did in 2005 with his fiery single,"Can't Satisfy Her," on heavy rotation at New York's Hot 97 radio station; or receive critical acclamation on their debut album as he did with "Lava Ground." I-Wayne has undeniably raised the bar for roots reggae of this generation by captivating the world with his distinct sound and deep insight.
On his eagerly awaited release "Book Of Life," I-Wayne polishes his enchanting smooth sound over airy instrumentals with simply yet profound lyrics that remind listeners of an essential truth—that life is a gift for which we can be grateful. The title track, which is the CD’s first single, provides an overview of the set, expressing everything I Wayne has learned in his 28 years of life and his desire to share his experience—a glowing example of the personal rendered universal.
This uniquely positive world view comes across most clearly in "Life Is Easy," in which I Wayne flips the script on reggae's usual recounting of the sufferer's trials by reminding listeners that the way out of suffering is to give thanks for the blessings nature gives us. He also covers domestic violence in "Jealousy and Abuse," (featuring the great Lady G); male and female intimacy in "Need Her in I Arms," and worldwide divisions and anarchy in "Politics and Religion." Following his philosophy throughout "The Book of Life," I- Wayne advises all to "Just appreciate life as it is and praise it." "We need to care for life more. We can't have too much love for material because then we disregard life. I'm not hear to force anyone but to share some of life's knowledge--just being "naturous ," he said.

So unu no hear how over in de Bahamas some unlucky chucky promoter guy end up in de slammer facing serious charges of messin wid Chuck Fender. De promoter certainly did pass im place by getting aggressive wid our ace DJ who was seriously assaulted. Good must rule over evil.
With elections looming and affects of Hurricane Dean still very real with many missing electricity and water, nightly entertainment, especially the customary street sessions throughout Kingston have been curtailed quite a bit. Early Mondays, Tuesdays and so on by "de gullyside" – at "Standpipe" have been going on without incident, livening up the community, but with a twist. Early really means early – particularly for this week before election. Starting as early as 4pm folk can stop by after work and "party done" by midnight…Nuff safety and niceness.
