More Medals in the Black, Green and Gold bag!

By: Devon Anderson and Dwight Fraser

Delloreen Ennis London.jpgNational champions Delloreen Ennis London and Noveline Williams continued to bring success to Jamaica's rich track and field tradition, as they mined bronze in their respective events to increase the country medal haul to four on day five at the 11th International Amateur Athletic Federation ( IAAF) World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan.

Ennis London clocked a personal best 12:50 seconds as she finished third behind eventual winner and title holder Michelle Perry of the United States 12:46 seconds, with the silver medal going to the Canadian Perdita Felicien 12:49 in the women's 100 metres hurdles final. The other Jamaican in the finals Vonnette Dixon could only manage 7th place with a personal best 12:64.

Meanwhile in the women's 400 metres final Noveline Williams eastablished a season best 49:66 running out of lane 7, and leading for 365 metres, the gold seem certain, but Jamaicans all over the world were reminded at least for that brief moment while Noveline rushed towards the tape that 'you must not count your chickens before they are hatched' and Williams was caught at the tape by the British pair of Christine Ohuruogu the eventual winner 49:61 and Nicola Saunders second in 49:65.

Novline Williams.jpg

All the Jamaicans failed to progress to the final of the men"s 400 metres. Ricardo Chambers, Micheal Balckwood and Sanjay Ayre competed well but fell short of qualification. Blackwood's 45.65 in semi-final one was only good enough for eight place, Chambers was fifth in Semi-final two in 45.18 seconds behind the eventual winner Jeremy Wariner of the United States 44.34, while tradegy struck for national Champion Sanjay Ayre who pulled up in semi-final three and did not complete the event.

It was dissapointment for the defending champion Trecia Kaye-Smith who failed to progress to the next round of the Women's triple Jump, as she finished 13th in group A' with a leap of 13.47 metres.

So after five days of competition, Jamaica lies in ninth place on the medal table with one gold, and three bronze, still on course to equal or better the eight medal haul in Helsinki back in 2005.

Sean Kingston comes up against protest

By: J.Koni
seankingston_bujubanton_jrsexygirlsbeyonce.jpgThey want Sean Kingston's mega hit "Beautiful Girl" to be cut from radio play lists! Yes, Joan Murphy, chairman of the New Mexico Suicide Prevention Coalition, while addressing reporters, protested that, "Record companies that promote artists whose message is that suicide is an acceptable solution to problems, don't help reduce the incidence of suicide anywhere. Radio stations have a responsibility to be sensitive to this issue."

A member of staff at the state Department of Health said local radio stations were e-mailed letters reminding them of the dangers of glorifying suicide in song. "I haven't received any response," Murphy said Monday, a week after the letters were sent out.

"Beautiful Girls" reached the No. 2 spot on the national Top 40 play list. It has dropped in popularity but is still in the top 10, said Justin Riley, program director at KKOB-FM (93.3).

The station had the song in heavy rotation, playing it about 30 times a week, he said. It is now being played far less - a reflection of ever-changing listener taste. Riley said he received no e-mail from any person or organization complaining about the content of the song.

"These kinds of issues come up from time to time," he said. "Somebody could find something wrong with nearly every song that gets played. We are a mass appeal radio station and have a lot of factors to consider."

"We apologize to any person who gets offended by any song, but at the end of the day if a song is popular it's likely going to get played. A song doesn't become No. 2 in the country without people calling to request it."

The Suicide Prevention Coalition works with the Department of Health. "Our mission is suicide prevention," Murphy said, adding, "We provide education, support and advocacy to reduce the suicide rate in New Mexico." Murphy said suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the country and the leading cause among people age 10 to 24.

New Mexico consistently ranks among the top five states per capital in suicides, with a rate 1.5 to 2 times higher than the national average. Suicide is the ninth leading cause of death for New Mexicans. Darleene Edwards, vice chairperson and treasurer of the coalition, said New Mexico is also "the lowest state in the country for the amount we spend on mental health care."

Her message to everyone involved in the media - the recording and movie industries, radio and television stations and newspapers is to "use the issue of suicide in a responsible manner and not glorify it and make people think it's the best option for people when they're in pain or when their life isn't going as they like.

"Suicide should be portrayed as the tragedy it is," she said.

Marley's shine at Summerfest in Trinidad and Tobago

The National Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago was recently packed 9000 strong with Marley fans who basked in the rhythms of the talented, Damian "Junior Gong" Marley and Stephen "Ragga" Marley at Summerfest. Also featuring Trinidad and Tobago based acts such as Royal Dainties, Jah Melody, King David, Orange Sky and DJs the Lion Twins, the show was a massive success, in the opinion of promoter, Roy Maharaj.

Damian started with "Confrontation", the first song on his album then moved into "Justice" then was joined by his brother Stephen for "Traffic Jam" followed by "Pimpers Paradise". Singing along and just thrilled to the bone, the maximum capacity crowd, especially those in the all inclusive VIP section were served up a healthy dose of Marley music.

Continuing with songs like, "It Was Written," "Could You Be Loved,"" Road To Zion" and closing the show with "Welcome To Jamrock," the Marley's proved once more in Trinidad and Tobago that apples do not fall far from the tree. "It really went well," one concert goer remarked, saying the show was one of the best she had attended.

Miss Jamaica World Crowned

By: Joseph Cunningham
Crowning2020.jpgMiss Jamaica World, Yendi Phillips, will represent the island at the Miss World Pageant in Shanghai, China on December 1. She was crowned at last Saturday's staging before a capacity crowd that seemed to be all hers and without a question; she totally dominated the contests. Phillips was the Most Aware, got the highest votes from the public and won three of the four mini-competitions. The mini-competitions were comprised of, the talent competition, the Supreme Ventures Miss Jamaica World (MJW) Sport and the Ting MJW Beach Beauty titles.

Speaking to reporters after her landslide victory, she said, "I'm not a negative thinker. I'm all about positivity. I believe you focus on what you want and only that and not allow anything else to get to you to break your train of thought. So my focus wasn't, maybe I can't win, my focus was that I want this."

It was obvious that Yendi was an overwhelming favorite. Whenever she appeared on stage she was greeted by rapturous applause, accompanied by great words of encouragement when facing the judges to answer questions.

The Judges questioned her ambitions concerning nation building, and Yendi responded emphatically, stating, "I would love to focus on the arts and implementing arts programmes in Jamaica. However, in light of Hurricane Dean, I would have to, definitely, love to work with government and influential figures and really try to get something going, get the ground moving on relief systems for the hurricane."

Owen Wilson did try to commit suicide at his California home on Sunday, revealed Los Angeles based police.

By: J.Koni
244.wilson.owen.091906.jpgHe was taken by ambulance from his Santa Monica property to the emergency room at the nearby St. John's Hospital at mid-day on Sunday. Soon after, rumours began spreading that Wilson had cut his wrists and taken pills in an attempt to end his life. He was reportedly found by big brother Andrew, who called the authorities.

At this stage, the Santa Monica Police Department's Calls For Service report, obtained by news show Extra - outlined the reason for the emergency 911 call to Wilson's address as an "attempted suicide".
Wilson did not address the controversy in a statement he released on Monday: "I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time."

The actor's family was seen at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was reportedly transferred to on Sunday night. A hospital spokesman reported Wilson to be in a "good condition" on Monday.

Houston Rockets guard Rafer Alston charged with assault

By:J.Koni
Act_rafer_alston.jpgRafer Alston, a National Basketball Asoociation (NBA) guard for the Houston Rockets was charged Tuesday for slashing a man's neck during a brawl at a Manhattan nightspot. This was his second breach of the law this month.

Alston was arraigned on felony assault charges before being released without bail. A judge ordered him to return to court Jan. 3. His lawyer said he was "absolutely innocent."

The man who said he was injured told police the incident occurred
on Monday after he and Alston accidentally bumped into each other inside Club Stereo. During an ensuing argument, the man said, Alston slashed his neck.

The 41-year-old went to a hospital to be treated for a minor neck injury then filed a complaint at a police precinct. Defense attorney Alberto Ebanks said witnesses told him the man did not appear to be injured when he left the club and never alerted police officers who were in the area.

The arrest came three weeks after 31-year-old Alston was charged with misdemeanor assault and public intoxication in Houston. Alston was accused in that case, of grabbing a parking attendant's arm, shaking him and spitting on him after his vehicle was towed from a lot. The attendant said Alston parked illegally and didn't pay. Alston told a Houston television station that he didn't do anything to the attendant.

The 6-foot-2 player out of Fresno State joined the NBA during the 1999-2000 season with Milwaukee. He signed with the Rockets in 2004 and averaged 13.3 points per game last season. Daryl Morey, Houston Rockets general manager, said the team learned of Alston's arrest Tuesday morning.

"Obviously, it is troubling that Rafer was again in a situation involving the police," Morey said while addressing reporters. "We take these matters very seriously; the Rockets expect all employees to represent the organization in a first-class manner. Until more facts are gathered from all parties, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further."

Gay Protest Mars Reggae Carifest 2007

by Olimatta Taal

march_now.jpg
Approximately 50 gays protested the annual Reggae Carifest held this Saturday in New York because Buju Banton and Bounty Killer were billed for the show. The City Parks Department said in a statement prior to the event that all performers signed a code of conduct agreeing to refrain from performing anti-gay lyrics, at the promoter’s request.

As a result of the pressure from the gay rights activist, Power 105.1, owned by radio giant Clear Channel Communications Inc. withdrew their sponsorship from the show. Glaad said in a statement that, "It is unacceptable for Clear Channel, the concert promoters,
and the other sponsors to provide these performers with a platform to promote messages that put lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people in harm's way."

bujubantongargamelreggaesexygirls.jpg
Buju Banton has responded to the protest and has branded gay rights protesters at the New York Reggae Festival as "Stupid and ignorant even though they claim to be intelligent." He insists that his messages are not anti-gay and criticized those who slammed his billing at the event.

According to Tokes Osuba from Gay Men of African Descent, "The festival was not well attended. The artistes were muted against their performance and this is a victory for the community. We are advocating sanity and safety in America and must stand up against murder music. Buju Banton and Beenie Man advocate the murder of gays.!

Since the signing of the Reggae Compassionate Act, one would wonder why the organized protest since all parties have reached an agreement? Osuba explains, "These artists are speaking on three sides of their mouths. When approached by people about the Compassionate Act, they denied ever signing it. To them admitting that they signed this pact is a sign of weakness. One of the artist even said that his signature was forged."

Osuba continues, "So as long as they continue to perform the songs, we will continue to confront them where ever they appear. We won't allow them to continue to make money off the back of lesbian and gay people. Everyone has a right to do or say what they want to say, free speech. But we also have a right to defend ourselves and the words they espouse provoke people to be violent."

Breaking Dub Poetry into the Mainstream with BET

By: Olimatta Taal
MutabarukaEthiopianWorldFederation_byBana-Devi_Vasquez.jpg
Roots Cause Entertainment and Earth Strong Production have broken Dub Poetry into the mainstream with a Word, Sound and Power poetry series set to air on BETJ from October to December. "It's a poetry series with emphasis on dub poetry. It's an artistic force of uniting the African oral tradition of rhythmic dub poetry and the literal art form of spoken word," explains Aranthes Lewin, executive producer.

The first three series were recently recorded at Boone Hall in Stony Hill. It was hosted by M-1 of Dead Prez and featured some of the best dub poets in Jamaica and headliners from the Def Poetry Jam circuit. Lewin continues, "We are giving Dub Poetry its own platform. Mutaburuka, Oku Onuru, and Lynton Kwesi Johnson, have been doing it for years. Word, Sound, Power is something that has never been done, and will premiere the first week of October."

Dub Poetry has not really gained the respect and acceptance in the reggae community that it should have, however that is slowly changing. Word, Sound, and Power is providing a platform for Dub Poetry representing poets of Caribbean and African background. It also opens the door to express strong political messages and the creative artistry of Caribbean and African expression.

The entire show will be shot in Jamaica, utilizing the beauty, wonderful themes, and perfect locations. "It was important that we get some of the strong poets and fuse them with some of the great poets up here with the Caribbean background," says Lewin. The set up for the first three series was majestic and was reminiscent of the finest of poetry lounges, but with a Jamaican feel.

As M-1 set the stage for the poets, it was apparent why he had been chosen to host this historic series. Lewin said, "We needed a host that understands what the Caribbean is about and what Africa is about. M-1 is a poet and an artist whose roots are deep in the Caribbean and Africa." In 2006, M-1 released his first solo album "Confidence" on Sotti/Koch Records and continues to shine as a rapper, activist, and author.

The poets were phenomenal as they showcased some of their best pieces. Representing Jamaican dub poets for years and receiving numerous awards was Yasus Afari while other poets like Cherry Natural, Royal African Soldiers, LSX, Kamika, and others set the tone for headliners Suhuir Hammad of Palestine, Roger Bonairagaird of Trinidad, and Ainsley Burrows of Jamaica.

In four weeks Aranthes Lewin and his team will return to Jamaica to shoot four more shows. Local poets who are interested in being apart of Word, Sound, Power will get the opportunity by participating at the weekly poetry event held on Tuesdays at Weekendz, 80 Constant Spring Road in Kingston. "We filter the poets and get to see who's who and what's what. We give poets a chance like Kamika and LSX who got a chance to shine from Weekendz, or poets can contact us at www.myspace.com/wordsoundpower and www.earthstrongproduction.com," concludes Lewin.

On your marks ! Get set ! GOLD

By: Devon Anderson and Dwight Fraser
campell.jpg"Wi likkle but wi tallawah" can be paraphrased to the majestic achievement of Veronica Campbell in winning the World Athletics Championship 100 metres gold medal on Monday, in Osaka, Japan, as; “although Jamaica is small geographically and has a population not exceeding 2.8 million people , our accomplishments in Track and Field on the world stage is not only phenomenal but without a doubt incomparable.”

Yardflex fans at home and abroad are still celebrating the quintessential exploits of the girl from the Parish of Trelawny who re-wrote the history books by winning the event in 11.01 seconds, in a blanket finish with the American pair of Lauryn Williams who incidentally is the Defending World Champion and Carmelita Jeter 11.01 and 11.02 seconds respectively.

Campbell's time never shattered the world record but the performance further solidified the point that as Olympic Champion over 200 metres, she has the mettle and grit to add one more major title to her collection. The former University of Arkansas runner who has a world leading 10.89 seconds posted at the National Trials in Kingston, Jamaica in June, won the event from Lane six, and remains on course to take the double in the 200 metres later this week.

Meanwhile Campbell's team-mate Kerron -Stewart out of Auburn University finished 7th in the event in a time of 11.12 seconds.

In the men's equivalent World record holder Asafa Powell had to settle for bronze behind winner Tyson Gay of the United States 9.84 seconds, and Bahamian Derrick Atkins in 9.91 seconds.

Leading up to 65 metres the former Charlemont High School runner Asafa lost his moment and was quickly gobbled up by the aforementioned pair to capture his first World Championship medal in 9.96 seconds, below his season best of 9.90 set at the Rome Golden League meeting on June 13 this year

Victorious under 19 Cricketers Back home

By: Devon Anderson and Dwight Fraser

Jamaica's under 19 Cricketers are back home after successful tournaments in St. Kitts. The TCL/West Indies Under 19 Three Day and the Limited (50) Overs competitions were entered into with confidence by Jamaica’s team.

The Andre Coley coached Jamaicans finished a respectable second in the three day format of the game, which was eventually won by Guyana.

However, the fortunes of the young Jamaicans changed during the One Day Competition when some flashes of brilliance with the bat, from: Shakoya Thomas, Derval Green (Captain), Horace Miller, Christie Jones, Nkruma Bonner and Andre Creary and with the ball, from: Jason Dawes along with Jamie Merchant helped facilitated the outdoing of their opponents to cap a scintillating run over five games.

In the finals, Jamaica chasing Guyana's 226 all out romped to 229 for 2 with 9 overs to spare, led by a “Man of the Match” performance from opener Horace Miller who scored a brilliant 133.

The Black, Gold and Green standard bearers under the Guidance of manager, Fitz Harris, hustled throughout the tight format of the schedule against The Leewards, The Winwards, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Guyana to cop a well deserved silverware.

By age 50 many women have experienced Fibroids

By: Dr. S. Lawson
Dr.jpg
fibroids_basic_information_image3.gifUterine fibroids are benign (medically harmless) tumors of the uterus. These tumors result from abnormal growth of muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue in the uterus. By the age of 50 years old the overall incidence of fibroids are 70-80% for women. Fibroids can vary in size from being undetectable by human eyes to the size of a full term pregnancy. In studying the origin of fibroids, they have been linked to hormonal imbalance, obesity, xeno-estrrogen, heavy metal toxicity, infectious microorganisms, stress and high blood sugar level. Fibroids can cause complications such as menstrual problems, pelvic and lower back pain, constipation, urinary problems, hemorrhoids, infertility, ectopic pregnancy and miscarriages. Black women are four times more likely to develop fibroids than Caucasian women. They also have larger fibroids and develop fibroids at a younger age. Treatment includes hysterectomy, myomectomy, Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE), gonadatropin releasing hormones (GnRH) antagonists, androgens (danazol), and focused ultrasound surgery (FUS), and essential oils.

Signs and symptoms that presents with uterine fibroids include heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged menstrual bleeding, bleeding between periods, period pain, urinary incontinence, urinary frequency, severe acute abdominal pain, constipation, hemorrhoids, anemia, back pain and leg pain.

021.jpgFibroids can be categorized into three types which include submucosal, myometrial and subserosal. Submucosal fibroids are located in the lining of the uterine cavity. Myometrial fibroids are located in the muscular layers of the uterus. Subserosal fibroids are located on the outer surface of the uterus. Fibroids can be detected by using pelvic examination, ultrasound, hysterosonography, hysteroscopy, hysterosalpingography.

Women who have excessive amounts of estrogen and insufficient amounts of progesterone are more predisposed to developing uterine fibroids. Women with excessive body fat are in an estrogen dominant state because fat tissues acts as an estrogen-producing organ similar to the ovaries and the adrenal gland. Estrogen is a inexhaustible hormone that stimulates DNA replication that in excess can stimulate the smooth muscle cells of the uterus to replicate excessively and cause the overgrowth of fibrous connective tissue resulting in fibroids. Xeno-estrogens are pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, and other toxic substances that act similar to estrogen causing DNA dysfunction resulting in abnormal replication that causes fibroids. The excessive growth of these fibroids can cause submucosal irregularity resulting in dysmenorrhea and miscarriages.

Fibroids in the subserosal layer of the uterus can cause obstruction of the colon resulting in constipation and the formation of hemorrhoids (dilated veins located in the region of the anus). Branchlike fibroids in the submucosal and subserosal layers can twist on themselves cutting off their blood supply and causing severe abdominal pain that may require surgery. Excessive menstrual bleeding due to fibroids can result in anemia and its associated complications.
Hysterectomy is the most commonly used method of treating fibroids and can be performed vaginally or abdominally. The American College of Obstetrician and Gynecology suggest that vaginal hysterectomy is the most appropriate for women with benign diseases and mobile uteri that are less than 12 weeks gestation in size.

Myomectomy is the surgical removal of the actual fibrotic tissue without removing the uterus. Myomectomy can be approached by open abdominal surgery or laproscopically (small incision in the abdomen to insert remote control camera and miniature surgical devices are used to excise the fibroid) or vaginally removing the fibrotic tissue. Another method is the Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE). UAE is a procedure where a catheter is used to deliver small particles that block the blood supply to the fibroids.

GnRH is a peptide hormone that is used to down regulate the production of FSH and LH which results in the reduction of estrogen. Two examples of GnRH are lupron and synarel. Danazol, a synthetic androgen can be used to shrink fibroids, reduce anemia, and stop menstruation. Another treatment is the focused ultrasound surgery which was approved by the FDA in 2004. It is a non-invasive procedure that preserves the uterus where the patient is placed in a MRI scanner and is subject to focused high frequency, high energy ablation of the fibroid. However, the long term adverse effects of this high frequency, high energy waves are not known.

Babyface’s Playlist in stores September 18

babyface1.jpgKenny 'Babyface' Edmonds finds a welcome reception for his version of James Taylor's "Fire & Rain," the #2 most-added single at AC radio and #1 most added at Smooth Jazz in its first week of release. "Fire & Rain" is the first pick from "Playlist" in stores September 18th, the first album on the newly re-launched Mercury Records label, a division of the Island Def Jam Music Group.

"Playlist" is the first Babyface album devoted (mostly) to cover versions of some of his favorite songs, including Bob Dylan's "Knockin" On Heaven's Door," Dan Fogelberg's "Longer," and others from James Taylor ("Shower The People"), Eric Clapton ("Wonderful Tonight"), Bread ("Diary"), Jim Croce ("Time In A Bottle"), and Dave Loggins ("Please Come To Boston"), plus two new compositions by Babyface, including the beautiful song he penned for his two children, "Not Going Nowhere."

Building on the momentum of the album's release week, Babyface has set television appearances on NBC's The Today Show and ABC's Live with Regis & Kelly, both on the morning of September 19th. Two mornings later on Friday, September 21st, Babyface sits in on the syndicated "Wake Up with Whoopi" [Goldberg] show. Soul Klap Records Building A New Vision

By: Olimatta Taal
Kevin B & More 008.jpgSoul Klap Records is breaking into the Reggae industry in Jamaica with an ammunition full of experience from time spent at Universal Canada. CEO Kevin Barton, plans on using some of the same ideas that created one of the largest urban music departments in North America for Universal Records.

Moving back to Jamaica was an opportunity to take a break from music. The VP of Marketing for Cable & Wireless offered him a position in the company as Head of Mobile Marketing lining him up to work with clients like, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Prodigal Son, Busy Signal, Kiprich, Wayne Marshall, and others. As a result, a break from music never manifested itself, but instead gave way to a new business initiative for the Caribbean.

Barton refers to the music industry in Jamaica as being very young, "It reminds me of Toronto five years ago. The industry was full of talent but lacked business people, managers, booking agents, real established labels, licensors and publicists – it was just very young. More people have to get involved, not everyone can be an artist to move the industry forward."

Through Barton's expertise with Universal Records, his office was able to hold the title three years in a row of "Record Label of the Year." He launched multi-platinum artistes like Jay-Z, Eminem, Mary J Blige, Ja Rule, DMX, 2 Pac, Snoop Dog, Shaggy, and more. Expanding his horizons Baron worked on a top rated Canadian series, "Drop The Beat," he entered into a partnership in a men's clothing line called Quotes Classic, co-produced the Nike Battle Ground Soundtrack, handled product development and marketing for Reebok and became involved in a few other business ventures.

As Jamaica embraces a new marketing tycoon with a wide range of experience and extensive connections, can his knowledge and wisdom make a great impact on today's industry? Barton feels he can, "I want to help build a better business model. Being at B-Mobile, you can tell the difference between music and content. The physical property of a CD is not the same anymore. Lots of artistes are trying to get around that but soundscans show that percentages are down in sales of physical property."

This means that more artists and people in the industry have to come up with creative ways to ensure that they get their monies worth when it comes to royalties and develop innovative ways to sell and market their product. "Artist have become better business people. They are producers, have their own websites, tele-production, own merchandising, and are really becoming better. My strength is to become a branding executive," explains Barton with confidence.

As Kevin Barton uses some of his ideas at B-Mobile, he has a clear vision with Soul Klap Records in the midst of it, "I would like to see Jamaica as a country that starts to reap the financial gains of this country. Jamaican's are exploited we don't benefit enough. PUMA is an example of this with the Jamaica PUMA line which was the most profitable of all of their shoe lines, however I am sure no Jamaican made any money off of it. I want to facilitate an environment where the artist and the industry make money."

Craig Dennis: May 29, 1973 – August, 3, 2007

fsyD05F.jpgCraig Dennis was laid to rest today, August 22, with a thanksgiving service for his life. Held at the Greater Macedonia F. B. H. Church, with Interment at Meadowrest Memorial Gardens, Kingston, the service was attended by hundreds of family members, friends and colleagues of Craig’s from the reggae fraternity, who turned out to pay their last respects.

Spoken of so eloquently by loved ones and in a beautifully executed remembrance piece by his cousin, Tafari Burns, Craig passed away on August 3, 2007 in a motorcycle accident. Today, he was laid out in a uniquely designed casket that had baby blue accents and a portrait of Craig painted on it. Laying there as if in the blue sky, Craig was kissed, touched, cried over and viewed by a crowd that has been waiting for Hurricane Dean to pass, in order to pay their last respects.

big ship family at memorial service.jpgA member of the Big Ship musical family, Craig was lauded for his good-natured and forgiving ways. One presenter spoke of his own difficulties with being strong, since he was ripped apart inside by his close friend's passing; and this was the general sentiment, especially so for Nagga Heptone, a member of the original Heptones, who is also Craig's dad. Unable to sit inside and follow along the with entire service, Grandpa Nagga, kept up with the quick pace of both Craig's energetic infant sons in the church yard – it was an emotional overload for him as well as for Craig’s mom, Joann, his sisters, brothers and entire family.

One post Hurricane Dean reality, is the lack of electricity in some areas of Jamaica and subsequently many buildings are without cooling systems. Despite the heat in the church and obvious wish to go through the service in good time, people kept going up to express their feelings about Craig, in monologue, rap and song.

Brother, Fabian Clarke, had to be consoled while reading the eulogy and he said it was unfortunate that Craig's blossoming career was cut so short - prematurely halting his brother's vision of building a substantial legacy for his two infant boys. Craig's biggest hit to date was a song done on Stephen McGregor's 'Power Cut' rhythm entitled, "Real Bad Man no Talky Talky."

Artists like, Freddy McGregor, Movado, Yeshemabeth McGregor, Geoffrey Star, Delly Ranks and Stephen McGregor were in attendance.

Voice Mail took a positive message to Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Press Release
voicemailinscenefromGetdownOnItvideo-1.jpg
'We didn't want to just go there and do a regular performance. We wanted to make sure that we took our culture and leave with a positive message', O'neil Edwards, member of Voice Mail commented about the group’s recent performance in Tortola, British Virgin Islands.

Voice Mail's performance on the three day festival on Tortola, marked the first time that the group was performing in that country. 'It was our first time there and we really enjoyed it', said Edwards.

More than 5,000 persons turned out for the festival which was held in an outdoor venue. 'We were surprised that the people there knew the words to our songs. It was quite interesting for us, because after about ten minutes into our performance, the people seemed to be very comfortable with us and were singing along word for word', Edwards reiterated.

The group delivered the hits Bring Yuh Body Come, Dancing Fever, Let's Dance, Ready to Party, Get Crazy, Weh Di Time, Wacky Dip and their latest release Bembe on the Big Ship label's Party rhythm.

'We ended the show with our message song Looks are Deceiving. That song speaks about the importance of protecting one's self against HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. That's the message that we have been spreading while we were on the RETV High School Tour and it's a very relevant message that we fully endorse', said Edwards.

Pressure, Coco Tea, Tanya Stephens and Fire Lion were among the other Jamaica artistes who performed on the festival. Voice Mail left the island on August 15 for Japan’s Yokohama Reggae Festival. The festival was held over four days.

After Hurricane Dean

digging out car-1.jpg
By 6:00am on Monday morning neighborhoods came alive again, with people assessing damages, bailing out water, cleaning up and clearing the streets in front of their homes. Many have to face the unfortunate future with new roofing costs, not to mention the constant state of current discomfort without running water or electricity in many areas still by Tuesday.

Solidarity in its best form is what the aftermath of this hurricane has brought to Jamaican communities. Each one is now being encouraged to lend a helping hand to others in need following the storm.

Son of Late Reggae icon Son of Late Reggae icon Joseph ‘Culture’ Hill releases single in homage to father

kenyatta1.jpgKenyatta Hill debuts' single, "Daddy," (Tafari Records) confronts the emotional pain and uncertainty he felt after the recent loss of his father. "While I was writing, I was sitting and crying, because I didn’t understand what was going on. I still don't understand what's going on, you just kind of to go with the flow," Kenyatta said.

His father, Joseph Hill, was the front man of Culture, the legendary vocal trio whose 1997 hit "Two Sevens Clash" helped define the roots reggae genre. In August 2006, while on tour in Berlin, Germany, Joseph Hill suddenly fell ill and passed away. Rather than cancel the rest of the tour, Kenyatta who has served as Cultures sound engineer since the age of 15 decided to step in for his father. "It was a challenge, because I never knew I could sing. I was a nervous wreck. There was pressure because I had a big role to fill."

"Daddy" is his first solo effort a poignant single backed by a masterful roster of musicians including Sly Dunbar and Dean Frasier. Full of the raw emotion or personal loss the single will resonate- musically and emotionally - with all audiences. Kenyattas upcoming debut album will be released later this year on Tafari Records.

Post Hurricane Dean Messages from Jamaican entertainers

Interviewed by Yardflex.
hurricane dean 2.jpg
Hurricane Dean thrashed Jamaica on Sunday august 19th as it went on a destructive glide on the islands south coast. The skies began growing dim on Saturday evening while people in Jamaica went about preparing for the category four storm. Ensuring homes were secured and filled with all the necessary provisions, supplies and especially love Jamaicans batted down and got ready.

Approximately 48 hours before Dean's arrival in Jamaica civilians had adopted a casual approach for the most part. Now, in the aftermath of Hurricane Dean, Jamaicans are counting their blessings. Although the Jamaican Public Services had the highest reported hurricane preparedness efforts in place, Dean’s effect still caused major damage to the island itself. Here are some post Hurricane Dean messages from artistes that were in the island at the time:

Dancehall DJ Delly Ranks reminisces on what he called a scary experience "I sat in my room and watched everything. I saw tress and light posts being rooted out by heavy winds. Dean sounded like a trailer coming in and sounded like a whistle when he was leaving."

For Jimmy Riley it was his worst ever hurricane experience "I sat and watched it and from where I sat, I saw the breeze in excess of 100 mph. Three windows were destroyed by flying objects (two bedroom windows and the living room window." However he gives thanks for life, his message to the nation is that 'Jah giveth and Jah taketh away. Blessed in the name of Jah.' He added "material things don't matter if it doesn't cause loss of lives."

Bob Andy said Dean went 'lean'. We have been spared, we expected a category five, but it was four when it got to us. "I don't know what Jamaica has done to deserve benevolence but we were to get a beating and we only got a small spanking."

munga_capletonfireman_girlsrihannadon.jpgMunga said I was born in a hurricane season so it was just another hurricane for me, so I spent the time being concerned about relatives and close associates. At the end I went to see the damages in and around my community. In a special message to Jamaicans Munga exhorted "Unity is the key. Usually we don't like the terminology 'gang-up' but in this case we do need to 'gang-up' on our problems and help our neighbors."

Judy Mowatt said they did not receive any structural damages. I lost a guinep tree and the guineps were ripe and sweet but giving God thanks. She emphasized that "Self preservation is not always appreciated; this has been proven wrong because whenever persons are faced with disasters like this they usually come together in the real Jamaican way."

judy mowatt.jpg

Pressure says for him it wasn't a bad experienced as he was well prepared. My family and I were at home and we had lots of food. However I wish too offer condolences to persons who suffered damages. For Pressure this was the strongest hurricane he has witnessed. A native of the British Virgin Islands, he only witnessed two previous hurricanes, Marilyn in 1995 and Hugo in 1989.

"Da one yah flop." The damages I have witnessed are the least of all the hurricanes I have experienced since hurricane Gilbert. I only lost a number of fruit trees. "I think this is a sign that God loves Jamaica and had the hurricane really hit us, we would have been done." Freddy McGregor stated this about his hurricane experience.

Bob Andy said Dean went 'lean'. We have been spared, we expected a category five, but it was four when it got to us. "I don't know what
Jamaica has done to deserve benevolence but we were to get a beating and we only got a small spanking."

The Marcus Garvey Story

Special Tribute To Marcus Garvey

By: Olimatta Taal

marcus garvey 1.jpgMarcus Garvey, father of panafricanism, is being honored throughout the world, celebrating his 120th birthday. In 1962, Jamaica gave him the distinction of being a National Hero in conjunction with world wide acknowledgement of his accomplishments through the work done under the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA).

The impact of Garvey's work laid the foundation for leadership throughout the world which gave birth to greats like Kwame N'krumah, Malcolm X, Kwame Toure, Angela Davis, Martin Luther King, Connie Tucker, Mukasa Dada, Rose Sanders and others.

Garvey's unique ability to build an organization on every continent with millions of people has been difficult to duplicate by other leaders. He instilled values and principles that taught African people that they are powerless until they identify and empower themselves in Africa and where ever African people may be, at home and abroad.

According to Garvey, "If 400,000,000 Negroes can only get to know themselves, to know that in them is a sovereign power, is an authority that is absolute, then in the next twenty-four hours we would have a new race, we would have a nation, an empire, - resurrected, not from the will of others to see us rise, - but from our own determination to rise, irrespective of what the world thinks."

Beginning his work as an apprentice in St. Ann, Jamaica, Marcus Garvey worked in a number of Caribbean countries before migrating to the U.S. and building the leadership of the UNIA. He was one of the most
disciplined and organized leaders African people have ever had.

Marcus Garvey developed programs of empowerment that taught
Black people to not only organize themselves but to also become self sufficient by building and owning their own businesses, educational facilities, hospitals and other structures. His continual promotion of repatriation to Africa has built a Back To Africa movement that continues to grow.

One of the most important concepts that Garvey pushed was the idea of African people controlling their own destiny and seeing the concept of spirituality and God in their own image. He also encouraged people of
African descent to love themselves, embrace their culture, and know their history to ensure a secure future.

While organizing in the U.S. Garvey gained the scrutiny of the U.S. Government and was arrested on mail fraud charges while he attempted to organize Black people's return to African on his Black Starliner Ships.

Garvey was deported to Jamaica where his honor and work was questioned. After a lack of support, he moved to England where he died without any acknowledgement of the work he had done which currently has impacted generations of people of color and poor whites internationally.

After his death, Garvey's body was returned to Jamaica and the people restored his honor and respect that was taken away during his propaganda driven deportation to Jamaica.

"That issue of racial pride whereby you are proud to be a black man, that is the overall factor. When you are proud to walk this earth and you realize that black people have given so many great things to this
earth and... you don't start the history from slavery, that would be the first Garvey principle that I would want every black person to embrace," Garvey taught.

The world honors and celebrates the life of a great man who has laid the foundation for generations of African people to come. No longer will his work be in vain as millions of people world wide study his life and philosophies that continue to be relevant as the issues of oppressed people are dealt with today.

Happy Earth Strong Papa Marcus Garvey!

Supercat assaults stage manager in defense of truths and rights

super cat 1.jpgShortly before his appearance on stage at Trinidad and Tobago’s MOB II Club, in Chaguaramas, "The Original Don Dadda" Supercat, reportedly struck the stage manager of "The Super Chutney Show" pushing him to the ground. Sources out of the twin islands say Supercat just could not "settle" with racial abuse flung his way by the prominent businessman, Wendell Naipaul.

Supercat, whose real name is William Maragh reportedly said to the audience, "I box down the promoter because him wha dis super Cat. Me ain't come Trinidad fi get mix up in no racism."

The "Wild Apache" outdid himself onstage, performing for an extra 30 minutes, before making a slick exit. On his final song, which had the phrase "I'm Leaving On a Jet Plane," Supercat walked off the stage into the audience and made his way while still singing straight to the parking lot and his car. He was out of there before police could hold him for questioning on the fracas.

Naipaul has not pressed charges and Supercat left Trinidad and Tobago the following day, customs officials said.

D'Angel's Defense Force Speaks Out

BookingPix.jpgManaging Director for Artist Development at the US based Allen Agency, Heather Elliot, today sent a strongly worded letter to journalists of a particular internet publication - who she called, "One sided," threatening legal action for the publishing of appalling news stories that portray her client, Michelle "D'Angel" Downer in a negative fashion.

Referring particularly to reports that she said were maliciously published, claiming, "D'Angel lifted her skirt and patted her genital area," during the Beenie Man furniture repossession fiasco, Elliot wants the public to know that the story is erroneous and that Ms. Downer did not act in such a manner.

Elliot has advised the publishing house concerned to retract the story or put themselves in the line of fire for a Defamation of Character Lawsuit against them.

In reality, Elliot said, Ms. Downer was contained at the rear entrance of the M.A.F.I.A house offices when the alleged commotion was taking place at Garelli House, New Kingston and was not mostly in the public eye as the misleading story in question reported.

The following is a part of the statement issued on D'Angel's behalf by The Allen Agency today:

The Allen Agency believes in Ms Downer as an Artiste and stands by her one hundred and ten percent and urges the Jamaican public and her fans to not be gullible about news and articles written in a negative fashion, meant to derail and deform Ms. Downer's character and ambition as an artiste. Ms. Downer has been through a rather tough time lately and wants nothing more at this stage in her career than to do good by her fans and continue to perfect her craft as an entertainer.

She has worked assiduously these past few weeks to ensure that her statements pertaining to her marriage and husband are fair and that her music thrives despite the thunderous rumors and outrageous speculations. What Ms. Downer wants more than anything is for fans and the general public not be swayed easily by the hype of some biased journalism being portrayed but to continue to support her as she continues her passion to entertain the public.

To conclude, we find it extremely disappointing that in the 21st century, there are still Journalists who focus on one side of the story. As management representatives of Ms. Downer, our greatest desire is to focus on managing her career and taking her to the next level as we invite her fans and critics to come along for the ride.

"light some candles"

barbeehat.jpgBarbee is now enjoying a huge buzz both in Jamaica and the Caribbean. After weeks of doing rounds on the Jamaican circuit she is set to leave the island for Miami to scout video locations for the "Paddy Cake" video. Released recently, "Paddy Cake" is a fun, jazzy single done in combination with Beenie Man. "It will be a totally fun video, you can't put it into a genre. There will definitely be something for everyone," the sultry singer shared.

Scheduled to be shot under the direction of Scuba (director of videos for Young Jeezy and Fabulous), there is high anticipation on the outcome. "I will be on my head top doing the "Paddy Cake" dance," Barbee promised. Of course video compilers are hinting at some steamy scenes with the King of The Dancehall.

Seeming to rise up onto the scene out of nowhere overnight and shrouded in the midst of deep controversy, Barbee's name has been on everyone's lips most recently, but she is definitely much more than all that. Blessed with a beautiful voice, a very sexy figure and a heart of gold this very tall, forceful female artiste is out to make her mark in a positive light on the entertainment scene.

Her grand entrance into the limelight wasn't the way she thought it would be, but Barbee is putting all that behind her, showing the world that she is more than just a pretty face. Performing at the Ocho Rios Seafood Festival recently, Barbee made a lasting impression on the audience…whatever reservations she had were quickly dispelled as the crowd's response showed she had won their hearts.

Watch out for her other latest single out – "Light Some Candles Tonight."

"Guns Dogs and Pusses"; an album review

By: Joseph Cunningham
Tony rbel.jpg"Mi lef it gi dem an dem still couldn't manage it." These are words from track number 17 of the song, "Gun Dogs and Pusses" on Tony Rebels latest album I Rebel. Maybe you have heard it said about albums so many times before, but there is no way I can avoid saying that this album is a classic.

The declaration on track 17 is not just one coming from 'a singer with a dying career who's seeking life through controversy' – it is definitely for real! This is one for the ages.
Let's start with the melodies accompanying each song. Pardon me Mr. Rebel, I know you appreciate your own identity, but the musical compositions on your album made me think, wow! This sounds like music that would come from Dennis Brown!

There are 20 tracks on the album, and none is of inferior quality. The production addresses humanity and issues which are most important to existence. Love, hate, trust, self actualization, religion, history and political issues are at the forefront of "the rebels" lyrical drive.

The entertainer, writer, show promoter and music producer printed his greeting on the cover of the album. In it he reveals the inspiration behind the album's content. It says, "The history of our nation has always been closely related to the history of our music, and the music has been both the rallying point, and the inspirer of our national unity: therefore, we continue to do what we do best. Every thought becomes action, action becomes habit, habit becomes character, and character becomes destiny."

Yardflex's microscopic views

This is a track by track summary.

(1)Lalibella" The song encourages all to know your history and to stay in touch with it mentally and emotionally. This awareness would bring unity.

(2) Hear My Cry- This is an appeal to "Jah" for protection from evil forces and persons who seek to distort proper moral principles.

(3) Heart of Gold- This examines a woman who is determined and resolute, but can be moved by affection.

(4) Mr. Love- This is a love song that examines the man who is confident in declaring himself to be the “Knight in shining armor" to any damsel in distress.

(5) Take Care of yourself- The message here
encourages one to be able to appreciate him/her before attempting to be a lover or caregiver to someone else.

(6) Never Let Go- Encourages "stick-to-itiveness". The relentless pursuing of ones dreams and aspirations will bring triumph.

(7) Hypocrisy- This looks at politics and its indiscretions.

(8) Sweet Aroma- The "rebel" rebels by idolizing the controversial herb, marijuana.

(9) For the Love of You- Here Tony Rebel expresses his deepest feelings for his lover.

(10) Know yourself- This song encourages self-actualization. Fulfilling ones maximum potential.

(11) Brake the Cycle- A continuation of a negative family cycle is the ultimate destruction. One should endeavor to be taking his/her surname to new levels of
respectability with each generation.

(12) One Bad thing to be poor- Looks at the cruelty of poverty.

(13) Do it again- Be motivated by past successes, no matter how dismal the future appears, be encouraged by past achievements.

(14) Fire Fire- Highlights a need for condemning immorality and a pronouncement of the demise of persons who facilitate corruption.

(15) Mi Love Her- Another confession of undying love for his girl.

(16) Necessary- The song renounces recklessness by persons who have wealth and power.

(17) Gun Dogs and
Pusses.

(18) Step up in Life- Encourages upward social mobility.

(19) Trust in the Most High- Faith in the creator for daily sustenance.

(20) Lonely- The discomforts which result from the absence of that special someone in a persons life.

Another Rocking Reggae woman cries "Misunderstandings and Physical Altercations"

michellejustbust.jpgMad Michelle, who once ruled as Queen of the Dancehall is livid about gossip attaching her to selector Fire Links. Whoever started this rumor has cause mayhem in her 5 year relationship with partner, Harry Toddler. Michelle said that the rumors are not true, and she has never ever been approached in any inappropriate way by Fire Links.

Michelle whose real name is Ann-Marie McKoy, said she has been in a relationship with Toddler ever since she won the Dancehall Queen title in 2003. Now his lack of trust is causing them to have physical altercations and the worst part of it all for Mad Michelle is that she is suffering as a result of malicious lies.

Recently returned to Jamaica from touring places like Martinique, Montreal and Cayman, Mad Michelle says her career as a popular dancer is doing well and she is actually testing the singing waters. A new dance song to be released in the next 2 months is in the pipeline for her.

Don Imus making comeback after "Nappy Headed Ho" comment

By: J. Koni
don imus.jpgal_sharpton2.jpgDon Imus, the radio broadcaster who was axed from CBS Radio earlier this year after he called members of a mostly black Rutgers University Women's Basketball team, "nappy-headed hos" on his radio show, "Imus in the Morning," is planning a comeback after reaching a settlement over his multi-million dollar contract with the station. Previously, he threatened to sue CBS for $120 million in a breach-of-contract lawsuit, but both parties reached an agreement on Tuesday August 14.

The terms of the settlement reached Wednesday, August 15 with former employee CBS, is for $20 million and it leaves Imus a free agent.

To date, Imus has been talking with rivals WABC-AM radio to resume his broadcasting career and there are rumors of him possibly going over to ABC, Clear Channel or XM and Sirius satellite radio.

Political, civil rights and social justice activist, Al Sharpton said "Imus could become the poster boy of redemption and of turning around from this error of degradation," Sharpton said. "We've never said he should never work again, but we would certainly monitor under what circumstance and safeguards they would have. He's certainly going to have to convince us that there's somebody else sitting in the chair."

Many say Sharpton is going to be either very disappointed or very busy.

After partying at Uptown Mondays Beenie Man Storms D’Angel’s Office

Beenieman-d'angel-marco-dean-SexyGirls-beyonce.jpgBeenie Man and an entourage of men from 357 Entertainment stormed into D'Angel's office in New Kinston on Tuesday, taking her furniture and dismantling the office. Almost every media house was present including business people from the area witnessing this event. A van and a truckload of furniture could be seen trying to leave the premises, however D'Angel arrived in-time and blocked the drive way with her car.

A close source of Yard Flex told us that the furniture belonged to D'Angel and that she had been making the payments at Courts from the beginning. Unfortunately, Beenie Man was not able to leave with any of the furniture because her lawyer arrived with an affidavit to stop him. He was attempting to take two computers, a living room set, two desks, two chairs, and a TV.

The night before Beenie Man was seen by Yardflex in a jovial mood at Uptown Mondays. He interacted with fans and friends at the hot Monday night street party spot in Kingston, dancing, laughing, talking and of course taking photographs with drooling women. Women hovered around Beenie Man, who would be courteous before quickly moving along – there were no overt flirtations, but just genuine good natured love shown to all. There was no indication that only a few hours later he would have been involved in such confusion in New Kingston.

With all the furnishings returned to D'Angel's office, the dust settled after a court date of August 23rd was issued. The saga will continue

JAH CURE Makes Reggae History with tumultuous Sundance crowd reception

jah cure meets yardflex.jpgJah Cure's first performance since his release from prison on July 28, 2007 has left a lasting impression on his European fans. On Sunday August 12 at the Reggae Sundance Festival in Eindhoven, Holland, Jah Cure performed in front of 20,000 persons who were longing for that day. Irie FM's Elise Kelly gave a graphic report of this moment that she called absolutely phenomenal.

Kelly, who was present for most of the Reggae Sundance performances, lauded praises on all the "Masters of Their Craft" who gave brilliant presentations to the massive European audiences. Besides what is now termed as the historic crowd reception for Jah Cure, patrons were said to be highly engaged and enthusiastic throughout. Performances by reggae giants like, Bunny Wailer, Tony Rebel, Marcia Griffiths, Gregory Isaacs, Buju Banton, Jimmy Cliff and Anthony B were reportedly energy filled and well received.

The undisputed highlight of the festival this year, Jah Cure won out on a toss up as to who would close the show. Choices were Cure or Capleton… and after Capleton "bun down de place" with his mighty flaming sound, Jah Cure emerged and pandemonium broke out with the tumultuous applause and warm reception. In describing Jah Cure, Kelly said, "Looking absolutely handsome in full white Jah Cure received the kind of love in Holland that was phenomenal." With the excellent music direction of Dean Fraser, and in full control – with enormous confidence, Jah Cure mesmerized the Sundance audience.

After 2 encores and after the band had dismantled, the 20,000 strong in the Sundance field refused to move, Kelly reported. They wanted more of Jah Cure, and he could not refuse such a determined lot. Coming back one last time, Jah Cure polished off a tremendous show that had people interacting with tears and in song. Worldwide it has been described as a historical moment.

Reggae Rising captured the true essence of Roots Reggae and Dancehall

Photos By: Maria Mendoza
stephen marley.jpgdamion marley 07.jpg
Rearing its determined head from a cloud of controversy, Reggae Rising was a complete success. The sold out inaugural event, held August 3rd, 4th and 5th on the spectacular grounds of Humboldt County's Dimmick Ranch in Piercy, California offered up intimate servings of major reggae headliners, joined by solid 'up and coming' acts.

With 12,000 people on site and mellow vibes permeating the scene, Reggae Rising pumped positive energy for 3 days straight. Capturing the true essence of reggae, the festival featured the absolute best in all aspects of the genre. The huge roster of reggae giants like: Tanya Stephens, Morgan Heritage, Horace Andy and Ziggy Marley, made this traditional "reggae pilgrimage" parallel to none.

'Captain of The Big Ship', Freddie McGregor, sang each one of his songs with tremendous feeling and passion. He sang, "Revolution" as a tribute to Dennis Brown. Sly & Robbie and The Taxi Gang, featuring Horace Andy & Cherine Anderson, put on a great performance, as did 25 year reggae biz veteran, Richie Stephens. Full of energy, Stephens performed some dancehall classics, paying tribute to Dennis Brown and Bob Marley. His James Brown dance moves and oldies repertoire, turned the Reggae Rising Crowd into a Reggae Rising Choir as they sang along to his melodic tunes.

freddymcgregor_reggaecalifonia.jpg

Amazed by Morgan Heritage's performance, the crowd was engaged the whole time. They introduced new artist, Laza, to a tumultuous applause and featured singer, Irie Love. Tanya Stephens had fans dancing and singing along with her as she sang hits like, "To The Limit" and "To The Rescue." She blew the crowd away with her tune, "It's A Pity."

Ziggy Marley caused a sea of people to absolutely roar, as he took to the stage. Bringing out patrons' emotions, his set went late into the night. Brothers Damian and Stephen were similarly greeted when they performed. Playing drums and singing, Stephen's "You're Gonna Leave" and "Inna di Red" were well received. The crowd loved his rendition of Dad's, "Buffalo Soldier," and danced along to "Got Music." Damian brought mad energy to the stage, getting people to take out their cell phones and lighters and unearthing massive audience response. Dedicating "There For You" to all the people who have helped him in his life, Damian got the audience to participate while performing, "In 2 Deep." Erupting like a volcano, Reggae Rising went into an uproar when Stephen joined Damian on stage to do a tribute to their dad, with songs like, "Could You Be Loved."

Other reggae icons like, Steel Pulse continue to send crowds into ballistic mode, and at Reggae Rising Festival there was no exception. Rocking the audience from stage front with their heavy guitar playing, the British based veterans got great response especially for the old time favorite tune, "Rollerskates."

Partying on the Eel River in beautiful Northern California to the shock out reggae vibes will always be a super experience. Reggae Rising Festival 2007 was living proof that there is power in the rhythms and they spell Peace, Unity and Love.

Keeping up with MAVADO

Stingmavado_bountykillerd'angel.jpgFresh from the successful US launch of his much anticipated debut album, "Gangsta for Life – the Symphony of David Brooks," Mavado has returned to the island to shoot a video for his mega hit "Squeeze Her Breast," the summer anthem also featured on his album.

The video was shot over two days on location in Cassava Piece and in a sound studio, with scores of hot girls flooding the camera lens. The video, which was directed by Julia Braham, also features a snippet of the follow-up to Squeeze Her Breast, "Twice a Day," a song that leaves little to the imagination. The video has now been edited and should be hitting TV screens over the next couple of weeks.

Mavado will be returning to New York later this month to headline the Carifest stage show, as well as to film a big budget video for the second single from "Gangsta For Life."

"Dying" - the first single from the album - is now the number 1 record in rotation on New York's HOT 97 FM.

Mavado recently made an appearance at Funkmaster Flex's Custom Car and Bike Show in Hartford Connecticut, where he appeared alongside many of the top rappers in the game, such as T.I, Yung Buck, Jim Jones. Camron and Mike Jones. Shaggy and Elephant Man also represented for Jamaica.

On the recording front Mavado voiced a track with Akon and Busta Rhymes for Busta's upcoming album, to be released on Dr Dre's Aftermath Records imprint. He also recorded two tracks with Wyclef Jean and Uncle Murder for their respective upcoming albums.
Mavado will be hosting the Jamaican launch of the album towards the end of this month.

Sharp, Melodic and Royal - Taurus Riley Rules

By: Joseph Cunningham
Tarrus_Riley_2.jpg
Taurus Riley's "She's Royal" is one of those songs void of an expiry date. Simply put the song is a classic. Taurus has been on the periphery of superstardom for a long time; but the sun is currently shining on him, and it's doing so brightly. Other hot current singles from today's hottest Reggae crooner are "Parables" and "Beware."

Listen to his music! Does the sensation that you feel remind you of a rising Bob Marley, Garnett Silk or Beresford Hammond? Yes, it comes from a contagious sound that could bring a meteoric rise similar to his predecessors.

Despite his soulful sound, Taurus' music transcends mere melodies for the ears, because like Peter Tosh, he could be called "a stepping razor".

The name of his debut album is "The Man Who Thinks He's Larger Than Life." "That album was my introduction to the world. It was not promoted, but the public was still sensitized about my mission, which is to heal lives."

Accordingly, the mission proceeds with his second album, just released and titled, "Parables." Taurus said, "This album makes my voice stronger. I am declaring my faith louder. My ultimate goal is to heal, teach and uplift through my music. My father is Jimmy Riley, a foundation Reggae singer and my mother is a nurse, so genetically I bring healing, healing music." According to Taurus, the album is a gem produced in tandem with legendary musician Dean Fraser that contains 15 tracks addressing political, love, and other social issues.

Further, with a daughter now in his life, Taurus said "Parables" will also demonstrate his added experience as a person.

"I'm comfortable with this album because it represents me fully. All the melodies came straight from my head." Taurus Riley commends his parents for introducing him to musical instruments at a tender age. Today, he plays the keyboard expertly. Taurus revealed his knowledge of instruments gives him the kind of advantage that the likes of Bob Marley had. "Just like Bob Marley, I am able to prepare a "skeleton sound" before I go to the studio. Quiet personal examination, composition and introspection of sounds and melodies will always provide a musician with authentic sounds," Taurus asserted. For the record, he noted that he appreciates all genres of music.

He was given the show- name Taurus by his mother, because of the time of year he was born and to symbolize the rapid rate at which he "spat" lyrics as a kid. "My father played his part, but it was my mother who really pushed me to be singer."

Reggae's latest "stepping razor" had words to share about the war in Iraq! "We do not need to go to war in order to free ourselves. Differences should make us stronger instead of dividing us! Variety is the spice of life. If a man love pineapples he should be allowed to have it, and if it offend others he should still be allowed the privilege of his own space. War cannot quell war! What's happening is due to ignorance," he contends.

The mission continues, and most recent recordings such as, "Midnight Hour," "Backbiters" and "Lion Paw" should solidify this. Riding on the waves of a sterling performance at Reggae's largest "showpiece", Reggae Sumfest, Taurus will appear to his legion of fans in Holland, England and in New York over the next couple of months.

Jah Cure's first appearance overseas

By: Joseph Cunningham
july2007-jah_cure.jpgOn August 12, 2007, Jah Cure is expected to make his first overseas appearance since being released last month. According to his manager, Allison Hunt, he will perform at The Sundance Festival in Holland. She also confirmed that news about his being scheduled to perform in the United States in upcoming months are unfounded and false.

The current "hot ticket" in reggae - Jah Cure is literally busting out all over, with an unprecedented popular winning streak that overrides the negativity of his recent unfortunate incarceration.

Born on October 11th, 1978 in Hanover, Jamaica and raised in Kingston, the talented singer was given the name Jah Cure by Reggae superstar, Capleton whom he met while growing up in Kingston. His first big break came in 1997 when he released the single "King of the Jungle" which was a duet with Sizzla. The single was produced by Beres Hammond who became Cure's mentor. He then released a steady stream of singles that won him critical and popular acclaim

In November 1998, while driving around Montego Bay, Jah Cure was pulled over by the police and arrested on rape and other charges that have been reportedly questionable and absolutely denied by Jah Cure.

While in prison, with access to recording equipment, Jah Cure released three albums and a number of singles, some of which have topped the Jamaican and foreign charts. His first album "Free Jah Cure" was released in 2000, it was followed by "Ghetto Life" in 2003 and "Freedom Blues" in 2005. More recently Jah Cure has released the singles, "Love Is", "Longing For" and "True Reflections," further showcasing his unique voice and lyrical ability.

Three days after his July 28, 2007 release from prison, Jah Cure's fourth album, "True Reflections.... A New Beginning" was released

Jonathan Plummer Tells How he Gave Stella her Groove Back

In a tell all novel that mirrors his life with Terry McMillan
ba_happy.jpgFollowing in the footsteps of his talented ex-wife, Jonathan Plummer has written a novel that closely resembles the events in his life. Once married to esteemed “Waiting To Exhale” author, Terry McMillan, Plummer was the inspiration for his wife's best selling 1996 novel, "How Stella Got Her Groove Back."

Plummer's first published literary works will carry the title, "Balancing Act: A Novel," and it will be released by Simon & Schuster on September 4, 2007. Based on the story of a Jamaican man who made a major switch in career and life paths after meeting and marrying a powerhouse of a woman, Plummer's fictitious tale focuses on this ordinary life that gets disrupted after entering what mirrors Terry McMillan’s world.

Described by Contra Costa Times as, "a sexy and satisfying novel as deliciously racy as the life he lived," the story speaks to the writer's experiences.

Plummer and McMillan made headlines after their messy divorce in 2006. The New York Times #1 Best Selling Author filed for divorce after her husband disclosed his homosexuality.

"Balancing Act" tells the story of a model agency owner who signs a handsome Jamaican man as a model. Like Terry, she is duped as he discovers a hidden hunger for a male model.”

The other parties engaged in the scenario, Bounty Killa and Don Mafia, Beenie's former chief songwriter, are currently taking aim at D'Angel's ex-husband, now that the split has been broadcast, I guess it's their time for revenge.

Both artistes have recently recorded songs, venting their anger! While it proved difficult for us to get the script for Bounty's venomous lyrics, we got Don Mafia's.

‘A St Mary Mi Come From’ Marred by Norris Man / Sizzla Onstage Fracas

SizzlaKalonji_YardFlex.jpgAs driving rhythms pumped revelers at Gray's Inn Sports Complex, St Mary in the wee hours of Jamaica’s independence morning, angry words were spewed in chants, blows were thrown and a barrage of fighting men took over the stage for about 15 minutes. The overarching problem seemed to be that neither Sizzla nor Norris Man ever heard about putting their mind in gear before putting their mouth in action.

While a few DJs were on stage taking turns at riding the rhythms, Norris Man came out on stage and took a turn himself – with a chant that included: "Yow – no man can't tell me notin, many artists are backstage… man like Jah Cure, Capleton and dem man deh…" This motivated the crowd to roar in a frenzy and it also set off the fracas that started after Sizzla's response.

Taking his turn on the mike, Sizzla said to Norris Man, "Behave your Blood****t self and come off of the stage!"

Norris Man's response was, "Go s**k yu mother," then he started to walk off the stage when a bunch of men descended onto the stage. A fist fight developed. One patron said that this staged mini mayhem was an unfortunate display of immaturity from 2 of Jamaica’s biggest "public attitude problems."

Capleton came on stage and was understandably upset at his professional colleagues’ thoughtlessness for not only the audience members but also the reputation of "A St Mary Mi Come From." Last month, the show's organizers spoke proudly at a launch, about their violence free track record. He chastised those responsible for the fracas asking if their intent was to destroy 'Rasta Ting.'

Sizzla and Norris Man then returned to the stage and believe it or not, they were still hurling verbal insults at each other in turn. Finally Norris Man left the stage and Sizzla pulled out songs from his gangsta oriented repertoire. The last song he performed had the punch line, "bullets don't turn back."

munga_capletonfireman_girlsrihannadon.jpgFor those few moments it was a bit like "Scary St. Mary," as a few people started to run around in a panic. Finally the ruckus stopped after police took to the stage and physically put the confusion to an end. During the entire thing, neither Sizzla nor Norris Man laid a hand on each other.

The problem was out of the way and the stage continued to shine with the brilliant musicianship of reggae's finest. Capleton, Munga, Jose Wales, Anthony B, Macka Diamond and others, each took their turn to speak out against the unfortunate incident. Ninja Man had the most poignant statement. He said the entertainers vying for image must remember that new top crime fighter, Mark Shields, said - before he leaves Jamaica, the only Don will be Clarendon.

Usher and Tameka are Married

usher-and-tameka-foster-040307.jpg
On Friday August 4, 2007, Usher and Tameka Foster became man and wife, according to gossip columnist, Stella Foster of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Writing that Usher and Tameka tied the knot at a private ceremony performed in the office of Usher’s attorney, Stella Foster (no relation to the bride), put the puzzle pieces together for confused and disappointed fans. The couple recently called off their planned elaborate wedding that was to take place in the Hamptons estate of LA Reid.

Sources for the gossip columnist said Jonetta Patton, Usher’s disapproving mother was surprisingly in attendance. She has been vocal in the recent past about her apprehensions when it comes to his marriage. Usher’s new bride, a divorcee, is pregnant with his first and her fourth child. Foster’s being older than her 28 year old husband was a matter of contention for Patton, who reportedly also snubbed the wedding idea because Foster was instrumental in her being fired as Usher’s manager last May.
The report said that Friday’s nuptials went ahead following the ironing out of an elaborate prenuptial agreement.

Dez I on the conscious path to stardom

By: Joseph Cunningham
DEZI.jpg" Unu naah stop si mi till unu gi mi." These are leading lines from one of the most memorable songs ever entered in the Tastee Talent search finals, and it was written and performed by Dez I.

The Tastee Talent search is one of Jamaica's many answers to American Idol. Dez I entered in 1999 and now about 8 years later he is a familiar face at mainstream reggae and Dancehall performance shows worldwide.

"After the 'Tastee' success I contacted my childhood friend Sherwin Sterling, chief executive officer at the Atlanta, Georgia based label, New Creation Records who asked for a demo," Dez I said. He has been signed to the label since then.

Released on the New Creation Records label, Dez I's debut album is entitled, "Thanks for Life." It is comprised of a multi-cultural assortment of empowering, educational and entertaining musical messages.

Promoting the album has exposed Dez I to a wide audience. "I've traveled and performed to all parts of the world. Several people have touched my life and inspired me in various ways. This album is not only a testimony of those experiences, but also an opportunity to live up and be responsible," Dez I explained. Currently, he is preparing for an international promotional tour supporting the album release.

Recently he has recorded "Seek Jah First" and "Real People" for acclaimed producer Mikey Bennett. Commenting on the single, "Real People," he stated, "When one finds himself in influential positions, one should use it to make the world a better place. No race, no class, no creed nor religion, just the real people mission we deh pon."
Dez I was a bundle of energy on stage at All Spice- a show that featured international Reggae superstars such as Sizzla and Capleton. He represented himself admirably, like the rising sensation that he is.

Beenie Man&BarbeeSumfest.jpgTaping of the second season of VH1's "The Wendy Williams Experience" began on August 2, 2007 in WBLS Studios. Today's episode featured none other than Beenie Man's estranged wife, D'Angel. In between rants about how well she is known all over the world and updates about her upcoming musical collaborations with various artistes D'Angel managed to tell Wendy that the rumors of her marital infidelity are false and that Beenie's reported new "young ting" played no part in their separation.

It has been 10 years since Lauryn Hill's release of her critically acclaimed album, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," which elevated her from hip-hop success with the Fugees to pop superstardom. Well, after a fiasco of a show in California where she appeared onstage unkempt and late, had difficulty singing, and fell on the stage, she is BACK, playing a free Aug. 6, 2006 show at Wingate Field (Winthrop Street between Brooklyn and Kingston avenues in Crown Heights) at 7:30 pm. For information, call (718) 469-1912.

For the first time in the history of the Jamaican fashion industry, Montego Bay will get the chance to house the first Super Model competition in Western Jamaica. It is set to be the biggest fashion show ever to be held in this region, with over 21 models taking part. On August 5, Dump Up Beach, Montego Bay will shine with star model hopefuls and singing stars. Produced by Sassy International Model Agency the competition will feature special guest artistes like Alozade, Warrior King, Noddy Venture, Toisis, Peter Lloyd, Delly Ranks, Chico and more. The MiPhone first and second place dancers will also perform at what is touted to be a road block event.

On August 1st Jamaicans celebrated Emancipation Day, commemorating 173 years of emancipation. Many events took place across the island and the focus was mainly on reflection and assessment of the freed slave journey to date. Celebrations included a rocking concert in Lucea, Hanover, called Across the Harbor, featuring Freddie McGregor, Christopher Martin, Mr. Vegas and Iley Dread. In Kencot the revelry included an earthday blast for Papa Dilly that featured the very cultural, talented and agile dance groups, Shelley Belly & crew, as well as the Sri Lankan crew. Dancers John-Hype and crew were spotted ringing in Emancipation Day at Gully Tuesdays in Standpipe and at the popular Asylum Night Club in New Kingston.

Recent reports put Nicole Richie in the expectant mother category and she is due to give birth to a boy...and while we are on the topic, Christina Aguilera is expecting a girl. Aguilera was ordered by physicians to cancell two scheduled Melbourne dates after collapsing at an Austrailian concert. The collapse, that was named as flu by her camp hindered her performing an encore.

Babyface releases new album called "Playlist"

babyface1.jpg"These songs came from memories, and these songs helped shape who I am and they're still shaping who I am," says Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds about his beautifully emotional new album, Playlist. "They shaped my past and now they're shaping my future." Indeed, eight of Playlist's ten songs loom large in the memory of just about anyone who has loved popular music for the past three decades. The titles and the original performers alone constitute a pop-radio dream team: "Wonderful Tonight" (Eric Clapton); "Shower the People" and "Fire and Rain" (James Taylor); "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" (Bob Dylan); "Please Come To Boston" (Dave Loggins); "Longer" (Dan Fogelberg); "Time in a Bottle" (Jim Croce), and "Diary" (Bread).

Much loved as they are, however, these songs are not necessarily the first ones that fans would associate with Edmonds, as he himself admits. "Coming from 'Whip Appeal' to these songs, it seems like a stretch," he says with a chuckle. "But it doesn't feel like that to me. It feels pretty natural." Indeed, while being characteristically respectful of the original versions, Edmonds layers in rhythmic emphases that make the songs move sensually on the bottom as the melodies float delicately on top. The result is immediately accessible acoustic soul music; old, cherished memories made new again.

Playlist was a labor of love for Edmonds because, as is the case with so many millions of other people, these songs are a big part of the reason that he fell in love with music in the first place. "When I was in the seventh or eighth grade, I would go to church on Sunday, and I'd listen to the music," Edmonds recalls about his childhood in Indianapolis. "That was the fun part for me. But when the preacher started preaching, I would leave and go to the car and listen to the radio. Normally, I would listen to the R&B station, but they'd be playing church music, too. So I'd switch to the AM pop station, and that's where I was introduced to James Taylor, Bread, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton. I was learning how to play guitar, it was acoustic music, and it talked to me. I loved it."

Performing songs that have meant so much to you for so long can present its own challenges, however. How do you live up to the artists who have set the standard by which you measure yourself? Edmonds had to confront that issue in the studio. "Look, I could have done a whole record of James Taylor songs, I love his work so much," Edmonds says. "What I appreciate about him is that he has so much love in his voice - it's so calming and cool. But initially when I sang ‘Shower the People,' I realized that I wasn't even close to the feeling that he gives. So I studied him to understand how he makes it feel so good, and ultimately I was able to get into that space."

Dylan’s "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" also required some thought – even though (or maybe because) one of Edmonds' children is named Dylan in honor of the great songwriter. "I was a little afraid of doing it, because in no way is my voice close to Dylan's," Edmonds says. "His voice is so free and rugged. But that song has always been great. And, finally, that's one of the tests of great music: a great song is always a great song."

Of course, Edmonds has worked with Eric Clapton – most notably on the Grammy - winning single "Change the World" – so the ballad "Wonderful Tonight" was a natural choice. "That's one of his songs that I've always loved, because he doesn't do a lot of romantic songs," Edmonds says, laughing. "That one was an easy fit."

Bread's "Diary," meanwhile, with its moving thematic twist and vision of love as a potentially painful mystery, is one of the places where Edmonds first encounters the atmosphere that would inhabit so much of his own music. "That's one of the first songs I heard on that AM radio station that really hit me," he recalls. "That was part of my training – the bittersweet romance, being in love, being heartbroken. That was the music that helped shape that."

Playlist's ultimate challenge, needless to say, was coming up with a couple of new songs that fit the album's richly textured mood. "That was a difficult task - like, okay, now you're going to add two songs of your own and compete with these?" Edmonds says. "But I'm lucky. I feel that I wrote two songs that can stand with everything else. They fit right in."

There's no question that "Not Going Nowhere" will touch the heart of anyone who has had to reassure his or her children that divorce won't mean a separation between parent and child. For Edmonds, whose amicable split from his wife Tracey was national news awhile back, the song came directly from real life. "I played the chords one day, and those words just flowed out like a conversation," Edmonds says. "It's part of a conversation that both Tracey and I had with our kids. We told them that we’re still the best of friends, and that nothing was going to change. We wanted to make them feel secure."

"The Soldier Song," too, grew out of a parent-child relationship after Edmonds visited a friend whose son had served in Iraq. "It brought it close to home, to see that connection," he says. "Regardless of what your politics are, when these kids go over there, they believe that they are fighting for us. And they die for us. Whether the war is right or wrong, from their hearts, they're fighting to make us safe. So we should remember them and respect them."

In conclusion, Edmonds says that, "Playlist is one of my favorite records that I've done. What's cool is that it's familiar, but it's fresh. I want people to hear something they know as if they’re hearing it for the first time. And I hope a lot of people really care for it, because I would love to do more – and pull out more of my favorite memories."

D'Angel speaks out about her outrage regarding character assassination and lies from Beenie Man

D'Angel&BeenieManPhotoByCarlingtonWilmot 1.jpgA number of accusations have been made to defame and destroy the reputation of Michele "D'Angel" Downer-Davis by her husband, Moses "Beenie Man" Davis in regards to their marriage. After her husband's appearance in The Gleaner and other press with Faith "Barbee" Jackson, having affectionate moments, he has done several interviews to justify his actions.

It was during these interviews that he accused his wife of infidelity
when it is evident that he is the guilty one. Mrs. Downer-Davis is
hurt by the accusations and appalled by his lies. He also denies
several acts of physical abuse including a recent altercation where he
removed her wedding ring from her finger and physically assaulted her
which led to her receiving four stitches on her face.

"I feel that our problems are a private matter and he should have never discussed it in the media. The way he has done this is not fair to me or our child Marco-Dean. My child is my priority and that is why I am speaking out to clear my name that has been scandalized by my husband. Moses has a larger responsibility than most people; he is a public figure, yet he and so many others treat women less than human with sexual and violent assaults. I am hurt by his actions but I am strong," D'Angel explains. "I will continue to be the best parent to our son. I do wish Moses all the best and will continue to be respectful of his career," she continues.

According to an article in The Gleaner, Senator Dorothy Lightbourne,
Attorney-At-Law and JLP spokesperson on Gender and Children's Affairs
says, "In 2005, there were 5,527 reported incidents. The figures for
domestic violence could be much higher, as many cases go unreported. I
appeal to our women to not cower in fear - speak out, get help, seek
redress."

Each year acts of violence: physical, emotional, sexual and psychological have been committed against thousands of women and girls in their communities, their schools, their workplaces, their homes and in the street.

In the same article from The Gleaner, The Most Hon. Portia Simpson
Miller: Prime Minister of Jamaica had this to say, "The sad fact is
that the majority of the violence committed against women is carried
out within the private sphere of the family, with devastating
consequences for the well-being and proper development of those
children who are directly exposed to it."

In the meantime D'Angel will continue to use her career as a platform
to entertain and educate around women's rights, self-love and
empowerment. She does not wish to do interviews around the specifics of her marriage with Beenie Man but you will hear clear messages through her music and live performances.

"I want to thank the thousands of people both here and overseas who
have either called, sent emails, and flowers lending their support to
me and my family during this very sensitive time. It is so refreshing
to see so many people come forward in support and that has motivated me to strive to become a better Artiste, a better Business Woman and a
Stronger Mother for Marco Dean," concludes D'Angel.
