More Medals in the Black, Green and Gold bag!
By: Devon Anderson and Dwight Fraser
National champions Delloreen Ennis London and Noveline Williams continued to bring success to Jamaica's rich track and field tradition, as they mined bronze in their respective events to increase the country medal haul to four on day five at the 11th International Amateur Athletic Federation ( IAAF) World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan.
Ennis London clocked a personal best 12:50 seconds as she finished third behind eventual winner and title holder Michelle Perry of the United States 12:46 seconds, with the silver medal going to the Canadian Perdita Felicien 12:49 in the women's 100 metres hurdles final. The other Jamaican in the finals Vonnette Dixon could only manage 7th place with a personal best 12:64.
Meanwhile in the women's 400 metres final Noveline Williams eastablished a season best 49:66 running out of lane 7, and leading for 365 metres, the gold seem certain, but Jamaicans all over the world were reminded at least for that brief moment while Noveline rushed towards the tape that 'you must not count your chickens before they are hatched' and Williams was caught at the tape by the British pair of Christine Ohuruogu the eventual winner 49:61 and Nicola Saunders second in 49:65.
All the Jamaicans failed to progress to the final of the men"s 400 metres. Ricardo Chambers, Micheal Balckwood and Sanjay Ayre competed well but fell short of qualification. Blackwood's 45.65 in semi-final one was only good enough for eight place, Chambers was fifth in Semi-final two in 45.18 seconds behind the eventual winner Jeremy Wariner of the United States 44.34, while tradegy struck for national Champion Sanjay Ayre who pulled up in semi-final three and did not complete the event.
It was dissapointment for the defending champion Trecia Kaye-Smith who failed to progress to the next round of the Women's triple Jump, as she finished 13th in group A' with a leap of 13.47 metres.
So after five days of competition, Jamaica lies in ninth place on the medal table with one gold, and three bronze, still on course to equal or better the eight medal haul in Helsinki back in 2005.

Sean Kingston comes up against protest
By: J.Koni
They want Sean Kingston's mega hit "Beautiful Girl" to be cut from radio play lists! Yes, Joan Murphy, chairman of the New Mexico Suicide Prevention Coalition, while addressing reporters, protested that, "Record companies that promote artists whose message is that suicide is an acceptable solution to problems, don't help reduce the incidence of suicide anywhere. Radio stations have a responsibility to be sensitive to this issue."
A member of staff at the state Department of Health said local radio stations were e-mailed letters reminding them of the dangers of glorifying suicide in song. "I haven't received any response," Murphy said Monday, a week after the letters were sent out.
"Beautiful Girls" reached the No. 2 spot on the national Top 40 play list. It has dropped in popularity but is still in the top 10, said Justin Riley, program director at KKOB-FM (93.3).
The station had the song in heavy rotation, playing it about 30 times a week, he said. It is now being played far less - a reflection of ever-changing listener taste. Riley said he received no e-mail from any person or organization complaining about the content of the song.
"These kinds of issues come up from time to time," he said. "Somebody could find something wrong with nearly every song that gets played. We are a mass appeal radio station and have a lot of factors to consider."
"We apologize to any person who gets offended by any song, but at the end of the day if a song is popular it's likely going to get played. A song doesn't become No. 2 in the country without people calling to request it."
The Suicide Prevention Coalition works with the Department of Health. "Our mission is suicide prevention," Murphy said, adding, "We provide education, support and advocacy to reduce the suicide rate in New Mexico." Murphy said suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the country and the leading cause among people age 10 to 24.
New Mexico consistently ranks among the top five states per capital in suicides, with a rate 1.5 to 2 times higher than the national average. Suicide is the ninth leading cause of death for New Mexicans. Darleene Edwards, vice chairperson and treasurer of the coalition, said New Mexico is also "the lowest state in the country for the amount we spend on mental health care."
Her message to everyone involved in the media - the recording and movie industries, radio and television stations and newspapers is to "use the issue of suicide in a responsible manner and not glorify it and make people think it's the best option for people when they're in pain or when their life isn't going as they like.
"Suicide should be portrayed as the tragedy it is," she said.

Marley's shine at Summerfest in Trinidad and Tobago
By: DC
Photos by: Marie Mendoza

The National Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago was recently packed 9000 strong with Marley fans who basked in the rhythms of the talented, Damian "Junior Gong" Marley and Stephen "Ragga" Marley at Summerfest. Also featuring Trinidad and Tobago based acts such as Royal Dainties, Jah Melody, King David, Orange Sky and DJs the Lion Twins, the show was a massive success, in the opinion of promoter, Roy Maharaj.
Damian started with "Confrontation", the first song on his album then moved into "Justice" then was joined by his brother Stephen for "Traffic Jam" followed by "Pimpers Paradise". Singing along and just thrilled to the bone, the maximum capacity crowd, especially those in the all inclusive VIP section were served up a healthy dose of Marley music.
Continuing with songs like, "It Was Written," "Could You Be Loved,"" Road To Zion" and closing the show with "Welcome To Jamrock," the Marley's proved once more in Trinidad and Tobago that apples do not fall far from the tree. "It really went well," one concert goer remarked, saying the show was one of the best she had attended.

Miss Jamaica World Crowned
By: Joseph Cunningham
Miss Jamaica World, Yendi Phillips, will represent the island at the Miss World Pageant in Shanghai, China on December 1. She was crowned at last Saturday's staging before a capacity crowd that seemed to be all hers and without a question; she totally dominated the contests. Phillips was the Most Aware, got the highest votes from the public and won three of the four mini-competitions. The mini-competitions were comprised of, the talent competition, the Supreme Ventures Miss Jamaica World (MJW) Sport and the Ting MJW Beach Beauty titles.
Speaking to reporters after her landslide victory, she said, "I'm not a negative thinker. I'm all about positivity. I believe you focus on what you want and only that and not allow anything else to get to you to break your train of thought. So my focus wasn't, maybe I can't win, my focus was that I want this."
It was obvious that Yendi was an overwhelming favorite. Whenever she appeared on stage she was greeted by rapturous applause, accompanied by great words of encouragement when facing the judges to answer questions.
The Judges questioned her ambitions concerning nation building, and Yendi responded emphatically, stating, "I would love to focus on the arts and implementing arts programmes in Jamaica. However, in light of Hurricane Dean, I would have to, definitely, love to work with government and influential figures and really try to get something going, get the ground moving on relief systems for the hurricane."

Owen Wilson did try to commit suicide at his California home on Sunday, revealed Los Angeles based police.
By: J.Koni
He was taken by ambulance from his Santa Monica property to the emergency room at the nearby St. John's Hospital at mid-day on Sunday. Soon after, rumours began spreading that Wilson had cut his wrists and taken pills in an attempt to end his life. He was reportedly found by big brother Andrew, who called the authorities.
At this stage, the Santa Monica Police Department's Calls For Service report, obtained by news show Extra - outlined the reason for the emergency 911 call to Wilson's address as an "attempted suicide".
Wilson did not address the controversy in a statement he released on Monday: "I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time."
The actor's family was seen at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was reportedly transferred to on Sunday night. A hospital spokesman reported Wilson to be in a "good condition" on Monday.

Houston Rockets guard Rafer Alston charged with assault
By:J.Koni
Rafer Alston, a National Basketball Asoociation (NBA) guard for the Houston Rockets was charged Tuesday for slashing a man's neck during a brawl at a Manhattan nightspot. This was his second breach of the law this month.
Alston was arraigned on felony assault charges before being released without bail. A judge ordered him to return to court Jan. 3. His lawyer said he was "absolutely innocent."
The man who said he was injured told police the incident occurred
on Monday after he and Alston accidentally bumped into each other inside Club Stereo. During an ensuing argument, the man said, Alston slashed his neck.
The 41-year-old went to a hospital to be treated for a minor neck injury then filed a complaint at a police precinct. Defense attorney Alberto Ebanks said witnesses told him the man did not appear to be injured when he left the club and never alerted police officers who were in the area.
The arrest came three weeks after 31-year-old Alston was charged with misdemeanor assault and public intoxication in Houston. Alston was accused in that case, of grabbing a parking attendant's arm, shaking him and spitting on him after his vehicle was towed from a lot. The attendant said Alston parked illegally and didn't pay. Alston told a Houston television station that he didn't do anything to the attendant.
The 6-foot-2 player out of Fresno State joined the NBA during the 1999-2000 season with Milwaukee. He signed with the Rockets in 2004 and averaged 13.3 points per game last season. Daryl Morey, Houston Rockets general manager, said the team learned of Alston's arrest Tuesday morning.
"Obviously, it is troubling that Rafer was again in a situation involving the police," Morey said while addressing reporters. "We take these matters very seriously; the Rockets expect all employees to represent the organization in a first-class manner. Until more facts are gathered from all parties, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further."

Gay Protest Mars Reggae Carifest 2007
by Olimatta Taal

Approximately 50 gays protested the annual Reggae Carifest held this Saturday in New York because Buju Banton and Bounty Killer were billed for the show. The City Parks Department said in a statement prior to the event that all performers signed a code of conduct agreeing to refrain from performing anti-gay lyrics, at the promoter’s request.
As a result of the pressure from the gay rights activist, Power 105.1, owned by radio giant Clear Channel Communications Inc. withdrew their sponsorship from the show. Glaad said in a statement that, "It is unacceptable for Clear Channel, the concert promoters,
and the other sponsors to provide these performers with a platform to promote messages that put lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people in harm's way."

Buju Banton has responded to the protest and has branded gay rights protesters at the New York Reggae Festival as "Stupid and ignorant even though they claim to be intelligent." He insists that his messages are not anti-gay and criticized those who slammed his billing at the event.
According to Tokes Osuba from Gay Men of African Descent, "The festival was not well attended. The artistes were muted against their performance and this is a victory for the community. We are advocating sanity and safety in America and must stand up against murder music. Buju Banton and Beenie Man advocate the murder of gays.!
Since the signing of the Reggae Compassionate Act, one would wonder why the organized protest since all parties have reached an agreement? Osuba explains, "These artists are speaking on three sides of their mouths. When approached by people about the Compassionate Act, they denied ever signing it. To them admitting that they signed this pact is a sign of weakness. One of the artist even said that his signature was forged."
Osuba continues, "So as long as they continue to perform the songs, we will continue to confront them where ever they appear. We won't allow them to continue to make money off the back of lesbian and gay people. Everyone has a right to do or say what they want to say, free speech. But we also have a right to defend ourselves and the words they espouse provoke people to be violent."

Breaking Dub Poetry into the Mainstream with BET
By: Olimatta Taal

Roots Cause Entertainment and Earth Strong Production have broken Dub Poetry into the mainstream with a Word, Sound and Power poetry series set to air on BETJ from October to December. "It's a poetry series with emphasis on dub poetry. It's an artistic force of uniting the African oral tradition of rhythmic dub poetry and the literal art form of spoken word," explains Aranthes Lewin, executive producer.
The first three series were recently recorded at Boone Hall in Stony Hill. It was hosted by M-1 of Dead Prez and featured some of the best dub poets in Jamaica and headliners from the Def Poetry Jam circuit. Lewin continues, "We are giving Dub Poetry its own platform. Mutaburuka, Oku Onuru, and Lynton Kwesi Johnson, have been doing it for years. Word, Sound, Power is something that has never been done, and will premiere the first week of October."
Dub Poetry has not really gained the respect and acceptance in the reggae community that it should have, however that is slowly changing. Word, Sound, and Power is providing a platform for Dub Poetry representing poets of Caribbean and African background. It also opens the door to express strong political messages and the creative artistry of Caribbean and African expression.
The entire show will be shot in Jamaica, utilizing the beauty, wonderful themes, and perfect locations. "It was important that we get some of the strong poets and fuse them with some of the great poets up here with the Caribbean background," says Lewin. The set up for the first three series was majestic and was reminiscent of the finest of poetry lounges, but with a Jamaican feel.
As M-1 set the stage for the poets, it was apparent why he had been chosen to host this historic series. Lewin said, "We needed a host that understands what the Caribbean is about and what Africa is about. M-1 is a poet and an artist whose roots are deep in the Caribbean and Africa." In 2006, M-1 released his first solo album "Confidence" on Sotti/Koch Records and continues to shine as a rapper, activist, and author.
The poets were phenomenal as they showcased some of their best pieces. Representing Jamaican dub poets for years and receiving numerous awards was Yasus Afari while other poets like Cherry Natural, Royal African Soldiers, LSX, Kamika, and others set the tone for headliners Suhuir Hammad of Palestine, Roger Bonairagaird of Trinidad, and Ainsley Burrows of Jamaica.
In four weeks Aranthes Lewin and his team will return to Jamaica to shoot four more shows. Local poets who are interested in being apart of Word, Sound, Power will get the opportunity by participating at the weekly poetry event held on Tuesdays at Weekendz, 80 Constant Spring Road in Kingston. "We filter the poets and get to see who's who and what's what. We give poets a chance like Kamika and LSX who got a chance to shine from Weekendz, or poets can contact us at www.myspace.com/wordsoundpower and www.earthstrongproduction.com," concludes Lewin.

On your marks ! Get set ! GOLD
By: Devon Anderson and Dwight Fraser
"Wi likkle but wi tallawah" can be paraphrased to the majestic achievement of Veronica Campbell in winning the World Athletics Championship 100 metres gold medal on Monday, in Osaka, Japan, as; “although Jamaica is small geographically and has a population not exceeding 2.8 million people , our accomplishments in Track and Field on the world stage is not only phenomenal but without a doubt incomparable.”
Yardflex fans at home and abroad are still celebrating the quintessential exploits of the girl from the Parish of Trelawny who re-wrote the history books by winning the event in 11.01 seconds, in a blanket finish with the American pair of Lauryn Williams who incidentally is the Defending World Champion and Carmelita Jeter 11.01 and 11.02 seconds respectively.
Campbell's time never shattered the world record but the performance further solidified the point that as Olympic Champion over 200 metres, she has the mettle and grit to add one more major title to her collection. The former University of Arkansas runner who has a world leading 10.89 seconds posted at the National Trials in Kingston, Jamaica in June, won the event from Lane six, and remains on course to take the double in the 200 metres later this week.
Meanwhile Campbell's team-mate Kerron -Stewart out of Auburn University finished 7th in the event in a time of 11.12 seconds.
In the men's equivalent World record holder Asafa Powell had to settle for bronze behind winner Tyson Gay of the United States 9.84 seconds, and Bahamian Derrick Atkins in 9.91 seconds.
Leading up to 65 metres the former Charlemont High School runner Asafa lost his moment and was quickly gobbled up by the aforementioned pair to capture his first World Championship medal in 9.96 seconds, below his season best of 9.90 set at the Rome Golden League meeting on June 13 this year

Victorious under 19 Cricketers Back home
By: Devon Anderson and Dwight Fraser
Jamaica's under 19 Cricketers are back home after successful tournaments in St. Kitts. The TCL/West Indies Under 19 Three Day and the Limited (50) Overs competitions were entered into with confidence by Jamaica’s team.
The Andre Coley coached Jamaicans finished a respectable second in the three day format of the game, which was eventually won by Guyana.
However, the fortunes of the young Jamaicans changed during the One Day Competition when some flashes of brilliance with the bat, from: Shakoya Thomas, Derval Green (Captain), Horace Miller, Christie Jones, Nkruma Bonner and Andre Creary and with the ball, from: Jason Dawes along with Jamie Merchant helped facilitated the outdoing of their opponents to cap a scintillating run over five games.
In the finals, Jamaica chasing Guyana's 226 all out romped to 229 for 2 with 9 overs to spare, led by a “Man of the Match” performance from opener Horace Miller who scored a brilliant 133.
The Black, Gold and Green standard bearers under the Guidance of manager, Fitz Harris, hustled throughout the tight format of the schedule against The Leewards, The Winwards, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Guyana to cop a well deserved silverware.

By age 50 many women have experienced Fibroids
By: Dr. S. Lawson

Uterine fibroids are benign (medically harmless) tumors of the uterus. These tumors result from abnormal growth of muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue in the uterus. By the age of 50 years old the overall incidence of fibroids are 70-80% for women. Fibroids can vary in size from being undetectable by human eyes to the size of a full term pregnancy. In studying the origin of fibroids, they have been linked to hormonal imbalance, obesity, xeno-estrrogen, heavy metal toxicity, infectious microorganisms, stress and high blood sugar level. Fibroids can cause complications such as menstrual problems, pelvic and lower back pain, constipation, urinary problems, hemorrhoids, infertility, ectopic pregnancy and miscarriages. Black women are four times more likely to develop fibroids than Caucasian women. They also have larger fibroids and develop fibroids at a younger age. Treatment includes hysterectomy, myomectomy, Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE), gonadatropin releasing hormones (GnRH) antagonists, androgens (danazol), and focused ultrasound surgery (FUS), and essential oils.
Signs and symptoms that presents with uterine fibroids include heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged menstrual bleeding, bleeding between periods, period pain, urinary incontinence, urinary frequency, severe acute abdominal pain, constipation, hemorrhoids, anemia, back pain and leg pain.
Fibroids can be categorized into three types which include submucosal, myometrial and subserosal. Submucosal fibroids are located in the lining of the uterine cavity. Myometrial fibroids are located in the muscular layers of the uterus. Subserosal fibroids are located on the outer surface of the uterus. Fibroids can be detected by using pelvic examination, ultrasound, hysterosonography, hysteroscopy, hysterosalpingography.
Women who have excessive amounts of estrogen and insufficient amounts of progesterone are more predisposed to developing uterine fibroids. Women with excessive body fat are in an estrogen dominant state because fat tissues acts as an estrogen-producing organ similar to the ovaries and the adrenal gland. Estrogen is a inexhaustible hormone that stimulates DNA replication that in excess can stimulate the smooth muscle cells of the uterus to replicate excessively and cause the overgrowth of fibrous connective tissue resulting in fibroids. Xeno-estrogens are pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, and other toxic substances that act similar to estrogen causing DNA dysfunction resulting in abnormal replication that causes fibroids. The excessive growth of these fibroids can cause submucosal irregularity resulting in dysmenorrhea and miscarriages.
Fibroids in the subserosal layer of the uterus can cause obstruction of the colon resulting in constipation and the formation of hemorrhoids (dilated veins located in the region of the anus). Branchlike fibroids in the submucosal and subserosal layers can twist on themselves cutting off their blood supply and causing severe abdominal pain that may require surgery. Excessive menstrual bleeding due to fibroids can result in anemia and its associated complications.
Hysterectomy is the most commonly used method of treating fibroids and can be performed vaginally or abdominally. The American College of Obstetrician and Gynecology suggest that vaginal hysterectomy is the most appropriate for women with benign diseases and mobile uteri that are less than 12 weeks gestation in size.
Myomectomy is the surgical removal of the actual fibrotic tissue without removing the uterus. Myomectomy can be approached by open abdominal surgery or laproscopically (small incision in the abdomen to insert remote control camera and miniature surgical devices are used to excise the fibroid) or vaginally removing the fibrotic tissue. Another method is the Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE). UAE is a procedure where a catheter is used to deliver small particles that block the blood supply to the fibroids.
GnRH is a peptide hormone that is used to down regulate the production of FSH and LH which results in the reduction of estrogen. Two examples of GnRH are lupron and synarel. Danazol, a synthetic androgen can be used to shrink fibroids, reduce anemia, and stop menstruation. Another treatment is the focused ultrasound surgery which was approved by the FDA in 2004. It is a non-invasive procedure that preserves the uterus where the patient is placed in a MRI scanner and is subject to focused high frequency, high energy ablation of the fibroid. However, the long term adverse effects of this high frequency, high energy waves are not known.

Babyface’s Playlist in stores September 18
Kenny 'Babyface' Edmonds finds a welcome reception for his version of James Taylor's "Fire & Rain," the #2 most-added single at AC radio and #1 most added at Smooth Jazz in its first week of release. "Fire & Rain" is the first pick from "Playlist" in stores September 18th, the first album on the newly re-launched Mercury Records label, a division of the Island Def Jam Music Group.
"Playlist" is the first Babyface album devoted (mostly) to cover versions of some of his favorite songs, including Bob Dylan's "Knockin" On Heaven's Door," Dan Fogelberg's "Longer," and others from James Taylor ("Shower The People"), Eric Clapton ("Wonderful Tonight"), Bread ("Diary"), Jim Croce ("Time In A Bottle"), and Dave Loggins ("Please Come To Boston"), plus two new compositions by Babyface, including the beautiful song he penned for his two children, "Not Going Nowhere."
Building on the momentum of the album's release week, Babyface has set television appearances on NBC's The Today Show and ABC's Live with Regis & Kelly, both on the morning of September 19th. Two mornings later on Friday, September 21st, Babyface sits in on the syndicated "Wake Up with Whoopi" [Goldberg] show. That same night, Babyface shares the stage with Country music star Tricia Yearwood, as they perform together on cable TV's CMT Crossroads Concert Special in Nashville.
"Playlist" is the third album in the new millennium by 10-time Grammy-winning megastar Babyface, the follow-up to "Grown & Sexy" (July 2005) and "Face2Face" (released on the fateful Tuesday of September 11, 2001).
Kenny "Babyface" Edmond's countless honors, which include Grammy awards for Producer Of the Year in 1992, '95, '96 and '97 (the only person in history to win for three consecutive years), plus numerous NAACP Image Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and American Music Awards, established him not only as the top hitmaker of the '90s, but as one of the greatest hitmakers in the history of popular music.
Babyface fans around the world can see him live when he performs at the new Billboard Live clubs in Japan in October: Tokyo, Japan (Oct 15, 16, 18, 19, 20); Osaka, Japan (Oct 22, 23, 25, 26, 28) and Fukuoka, Japan (Oct 29). Babyface is also playing Manila, Phillipines' Araneta Coliseum on Oct 13.

JAMAICA'S WEEKLY MUSIC COUNTDOWN CHARTS

Soul Klap Records Building A New Vision
By: Olimatta Taal
Soul Klap Records is breaking into the Reggae industry in Jamaica with an ammunition full of experience from time spent at Universal Canada. CEO Kevin Barton, plans on using some of the same ideas that created one of the largest urban music departments in North America for Universal Records.
Moving back to Jamaica was an opportunity to take a break from music. The VP of Marketing for Cable & Wireless offered him a position in the company as Head of Mobile Marketing lining him up to work with clients like, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Prodigal Son, Busy Signal, Kiprich, Wayne Marshall, and others. As a result, a break from music never manifested itself, but instead gave way to a new business initiative for the Caribbean.
Barton refers to the music industry in Jamaica as being very young, "It reminds me of Toronto five years ago. The industry was full of talent but lacked business people, managers, booking agents, real established labels, licensors and publicists – it was just very young. More people have to get involved, not everyone can be an artist to move the industry forward."
Through Barton's expertise with Universal Records, his office was able to hold the title three years in a row of "Record Label of the Year." He launched multi-platinum artistes like Jay-Z, Eminem, Mary J Blige, Ja Rule, DMX, 2 Pac, Snoop Dog, Shaggy, and more. Expanding his horizons Baron worked on a top rated Canadian series, "Drop The Beat," he entered into a partnership in a men's clothing line called Quotes Classic, co-produced the Nike Battle Ground Soundtrack, handled product development and marketing for Reebok and became involved in a few other business ventures.
As Jamaica embraces a new marketing tycoon with a wide range of experience and extensive connections, can his knowledge and wisdom make a great impact on today's industry? Barton feels he can, "I want to help build a better business model. Being at B-Mobile, you can tell the difference between music and content. The physical property of a CD is not the same anymore. Lots of artistes are trying to get around that but soundscans show that percentages are down in sales of physical property."
This means that more artists and people in the industry have to come up with creative ways to ensure that they get their monies worth when it comes to royalties and develop innovative ways to sell and market their product. "Artist have become better business people. They are producers, have their own websites, tele-production, own merchandising, and are really becoming better. My strength is to become a branding executive," explains Barton with confidence.
As Kevin Barton uses some of his ideas at B-Mobile, he has a clear vision with Soul Klap Records in the midst of it, "I would like to see Jamaica as a country that starts to reap the financial gains of this country. Jamaican's are exploited we don't benefit enough. PUMA is an example of this with the Jamaica PUMA line which was the most profitable of all of their shoe lines, however I am sure no Jamaican made any money off of it. I want to facilitate an environment where the artist and the industry make money."

Craig Dennis: May 29, 1973 – August, 3, 2007
Craig Dennis was laid to rest today, August 22, with a thanksgiving service for his life. Held at the Greater Macedonia F. B. H. Church, with Interment at Meadowrest Memorial Gardens, Kingston, the service was attended by hundreds of family members, friends and colleagues of Craig’s from the reggae fraternity, who turned out to pay their last respects.
Spoken of so eloquently by loved ones and in a beautifully executed remembrance piece by his cousin, Tafari Burns, Craig passed away on August 3, 2007 in a motorcycle accident. Today, he was laid out in a uniquely designed casket that had baby blue accents and a portrait of Craig painted on it. Laying there as if in the blue sky, Craig was kissed, touched, cried over and viewed by a crowd that has been waiting for Hurricane Dean to pass, in order to pay their last respects.
A member of the Big Ship musical family, Craig was lauded for his good-natured and forgiving ways. One presenter spoke of his own difficulties with being strong, since he was ripped apart inside by his close friend's passing; and this was the general sentiment, especially so for Nagga Heptone, a member of the original Heptones, who is also Craig's dad. Unable to sit inside and follow along the with entire service, Grandpa Nagga, kept up with the quick pace of both Craig's energetic infant sons in the church yard – it was an emotional overload for him as well as for Craig’s mom, Joann, his sisters, brothers and entire family.
One post Hurricane Dean reality, is the lack of electricity in some areas of Jamaica and subsequently many buildings are without cooling systems. Despite the heat in the church and obvious wish to go through the service in good time, people kept going up to express their feelings about Craig, in monologue, rap and song.
Brother, Fabian Clarke, had to be consoled while reading the eulogy and he said it was unfortunate that Craig's blossoming career was cut so short - prematurely halting his brother's vision of building a substantial legacy for his two infant boys. Craig's biggest hit to date was a song done on Stephen McGregor's 'Power Cut' rhythm entitled, "Real Bad Man no Talky Talky."
Artists like, Freddy McGregor, Movado, Yeshemabeth McGregor, Geoffrey Star, Delly Ranks and Stephen McGregor were in attendance.

Voice Mail took a positive message to Tortola, British Virgin Islands
Press Release

'We didn't want to just go there and do a regular performance. We wanted to make sure that we took our culture and leave with a positive message', O'neil Edwards, member of Voice Mail commented about the group’s recent performance in Tortola, British Virgin Islands.
Voice Mail's performance on the three day festival on Tortola, marked the first time that the group was performing in that country. 'It was our first time there and we really enjoyed it', said Edwards.
More than 5,000 persons turned out for the festival which was held in an outdoor venue. 'We were surprised that the people there knew the words to our songs. It was quite interesting for us, because after about ten minutes into our performance, the people seemed to be very comfortable with us and were singing along word for word', Edwards reiterated.
The group delivered the hits Bring Yuh Body Come, Dancing Fever, Let's Dance, Ready to Party, Get Crazy, Weh Di Time, Wacky Dip and their latest release Bembe on the Big Ship label's Party rhythm.
'We ended the show with our message song Looks are Deceiving. That song speaks about the importance of protecting one's self against HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. That's the message that we have been spreading while we were on the RETV High School Tour and it's a very relevant message that we fully endorse', said Edwards.
Pressure, Coco Tea, Tanya Stephens and Fire Lion were among the other Jamaica artistes who performed on the festival. Voice Mail left the island on August 15 for Japan’s Yokohama Reggae Festival. The festival was held over four days.

After Hurricane Dean
By 6:00am on Monday morning neighborhoods came alive again, with people assessing damages, bailing out water, cleaning up and clearing the streets in front of their homes. Many have to face the unfortunate future with new roofing costs, not to mention the constant state of current discomfort without running water or electricity in many areas still by Tuesday.
Solidarity in its best form is what the aftermath of this hurricane has brought to Jamaican communities. Each one is now being encouraged to lend a helping hand to others in need following the storm.

Son of Late Reggae icon Son of Late Reggae icon Joseph ‘Culture’ Hill releases single in homage to father
Kenyatta Hill debuts' single, "Daddy," (Tafari Records) confronts the emotional pain and uncertainty he felt after the recent loss of his father. "While I was writing, I was sitting and crying, because I didn’t understand what was going on. I still don't understand what's going on, you just kind of to go with the flow," Kenyatta said.
His father, Joseph Hill, was the front man of Culture, the legendary vocal trio whose 1997 hit "Two Sevens Clash" helped define the roots reggae genre. In August 2006, while on tour in Berlin, Germany, Joseph Hill suddenly fell ill and passed away. Rather than cancel the rest of the tour, Kenyatta who has served as Cultures sound engineer since the age of 15 decided to step in for his father. "It was a challenge, because I never knew I could sing. I was a nervous wreck. There was pressure because I had a big role to fill."
"Daddy" is his first solo effort a poignant single backed by a masterful roster of musicians including Sly Dunbar and Dean Frasier. Full of the raw emotion or personal loss the single will resonate- musically and emotionally - with all audiences. Kenyattas upcoming debut album will be released later this year on Tafari Records.

Post Hurricane Dean Messages from Jamaican entertainers
Interviewed by Yardflex.

Hurricane Dean thrashed Jamaica on Sunday august 19th as it went on a destructive glide on the islands south coast. The skies began growing dim on Saturday evening while people in Jamaica went about preparing for the category four storm. Ensuring homes were secured and filled with all the necessary provisions, supplies and especially love Jamaicans batted down and got ready.
Approximately 48 hours before Dean's arrival in Jamaica civilians had adopted a casual approach for the most part. Now, in the aftermath of Hurricane Dean, Jamaicans are counting their blessings. Although the Jamaican Public Services had the highest reported hurricane preparedness efforts in place, Dean’s effect still caused major damage to the island itself. Here are some post Hurricane Dean messages from artistes that were in the island at the time:
Dancehall DJ Delly Ranks reminisces on what he called a scary experience "I sat in my room and watched everything. I saw tress and light posts being rooted out by heavy winds. Dean sounded like a trailer coming in and sounded like a whistle when he was leaving."
For Jimmy Riley it was his worst ever hurricane experience "I sat and watched it and from where I sat, I saw the breeze in excess of 100 mph. Three windows were destroyed by flying objects (two bedroom windows and the living room window." However he gives thanks for life, his message to the nation is that 'Jah giveth and Jah taketh away. Blessed in the name of Jah.' He added "material things don't matter if it doesn't cause loss of lives."
Bob Andy said Dean went 'lean'. We have been spared, we expected a category five, but it was four when it got to us. "I don't know what Jamaica has done to deserve benevolence but we were to get a beating and we only got a small spanking."
Munga said I was born in a hurricane season so it was just another hurricane for me, so I spent the time being concerned about relatives and close associates. At the end I went to see the damages in and around my community. In a special message to Jamaicans Munga exhorted "Unity is the key. Usually we don't like the terminology 'gang-up' but in this case we do need to 'gang-up' on our problems and help our neighbors."
Judy Mowatt said they did not receive any structural damages. I lost a guinep tree and the guineps were ripe and sweet but giving God thanks. She emphasized that "Self preservation is not always appreciated; this has been proven wrong because whenever persons are faced with disasters like this they usually come together in the real Jamaican way."

Pressure says for him it wasn't a bad experienced as he was well prepared. My family and I were at home and we had lots of food. However I wish too offer condolences to persons who suffered damages. For Pressure this was the strongest hurricane he has witnessed. A native of the British Virgin Islands, he only witnessed two previous hurricanes, Marilyn in 1995 and Hugo in 1989.
"Da one yah flop." The damages I have witnessed are the least of all the hurricanes I have experienced since hurricane Gilbert. I only lost a number of fruit trees. "I think this is a sign that God loves Jamaica and had the hurricane really hit us, we would have been done." Freddy McGregor stated this about his hurricane experience.
Bob Andy said Dean went 'lean'. We have been spared, we expected a category five, but it was four when it got to us. "I don't know what
Jamaica has done to deserve benevolence but we were to get a beating and we only got a small spanking."

A section of Overtown, Miami, Florida was buzzing with excitement recently as Kymani Marley and his bus loads of models, assistants and other crew settled in to get his "One Time" video shot. The single "One Time," off of new album "Radio" is one of 13 tracks to be released on September 25, 2007. Kymani, who was recently signed to Vox Music Group, will also be touring with Van Halen in the near future and will be on his way to New York for further "Radio" promotions soon.
Kudos to the Miami Police Department who were out in full effect and did an excellent job securing the video shoot set.

In Negril last weekend the Yahweh Music Group held a closed meeting with a select group of music industry officials to announce the intended production of a documentary, "The Real Mafia Story – Six Degrees of Separation."
Drawing on the expertise of the chosen few present, Yahweh Music Group's objective was to engage in open analysis of the social and economic effects of such a film. The influential music industry representatives in attendance were required to sign a confidentiality agreement before becoming involved in the gathering, where they acted as consultants. When details are finalized an official announcement will be held.
At the last Jamaican 'Car Show' it was said that this could never be even a 2nd world country with the top line and expensive vehicles sold or brought in the country annually. Junior Reid has joined the list of those who can afford such luxury, with the purchase of his new one in the island 645 BMW - and this is why he's hot!
