BET 2007 awards in support of safe sex - Get Tested
By: CJ
Photos by Carlington Wilmot
YardFlex's Hollywood week got off to a great meaningful start thanks to our Host, BET and our Sponsors, New Creation Records and Catch A Fire Clothing. They rolled out the Red Carpet to ensure that YardFlex was well equipped to catch up with the throngs of celebrities in LA for The Main Event, The BET Awards 2007.
Dressed in casual Catch A Fire get-up, our first stop was at the SAG Building on the outskirts of Beverly Hills, California. There we witnessed a more solemn side of some of our favorite urban celebrities as they participated in the "1 in a Million" campaign launch and got publicly screened for HIV to illustrate their personal commitments to ending the AIDS epidemic.
HIV/AIDS tests were conducted in front of cameras and media in conjunction with this "1 in a Million" campaign that is a call-to-action for 1 million Black Americans to get screened for HIV by World AIDS Day '08 - December 1, 2008. The campaign which is the brainchild of Tony Wafford is a part of the National Black AIDS Mobilization (BAM), whose lofty goal is to end the AIDS epidemic in Black America by 2012.
![]()
The community wide initiative was a success as all participants rose to the occasion. A number of celebrities participated, including: Regina King ("Ray"," 24"), Vanessa Willaims ("Soul Food"), Sheryl Lee Ralph ("ER", Original "Dreamgirls" on Broadway), Hosea Chanchez ("The Game"), Angie Stone (Recording Artist), Tatyana Ali ("The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"), and Shari Belafonte, daughter of Caribbean crooner, Harry Belafonte (The District).
YardFlex caught up with most of the celebrities on-hand for the historic event. According to Actress Vanessa Williams of Soul Food fame, the numbers are compelling since "The Black population in the United States is only 13%, yet Blacks make up 50% of HIV positive cases." She added that "the reasons why the numbers have grown are because of fear, lack of health care, lack of education and lack of responsible sexual behavior." Clad in an A-line yellow dress which reminded me of youthful innocence, the black beauty wanted to get the message of responsibility to the masses. Williams also announced that "today is about moving into action."
Williams sentiments was also shared by Caribbean native, celebrated actress Sheryl Lee Ralph who was animatedly passionate about educating and urging her brothers and sisters to use wisdom in not only getting tested, but also in realizing the importance of strapping it up (wearing condoms). Ralph said she wants to get the talkers to not just talk the talk but also walk the walk. My interview with the Jamaican beauty was interrupted when her male assistant delivered her cell phone. Ralph paused the interview momentarily as she got the campaign's message across to the caller. It was evident that her participation was no community service project, her passion was deeply embedded in her spirit, message and carriage. Sheryl Lee was tickled as she recounted one encounter she had with a female interviewer who asked her how long was she "positive?" and then to see the look on the said woman's face when Ralph revealed that she was not "HIV positive." The only thing that was "positive" was her message, because she "cared about her people, her culture, all women, men and children, that may ignore the call to action and put their life at risk."

YardFlex's chat with the accomplished actress didn't end without including the Caribbean perspective. According to Ralph, "Our little Caribbean Nation of Jamaica including artistes and entertainers - we have to stop it with the ba**yman business and cut out the homophobia. They need to stop singing about "dem haffi dead," because it's to our own detriment. Entertainers with their homophobic mentality are against themselves, because we are one." The ER actress fervently interjected that Jamaica is a "Christian nation and our Christ never spoke those kind of words. If anybody was inclusive, it was Our Christ." Among other things the community activists wants everyone to "enjoy sex as good sex is one of life's pleasures. However, enjoy it safely, be responsible, use condoms and most importantly, limit the number of sexual partners."
Sheryl Lee Ralph can be seen in "Sometimes I Cry" her one woman free community performance about real women with real stories about HIV and AIDS. Readers can log on to www.sometimesicry.org for more info.
Many other entertainers promised to use their act as a method to spread the message. Veteran comedian, Luenell will include the message in her Pimp 3 Comedy Tour. Destiny Lightsy of MTV's "Yo Mama" was also on-hand to represent the show and call all young people to act responsibly. The 23 year-old beauty is elated that she has the opportunity to use her talent, positon and resources to "educate and participate in community outreach programs like the "1 in a Million" campaign, that calls her community to action."
The HIV/AIDS epidemic is growing at an alarming rate. Blacks are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. YardFlex joins the "1 in a Million" campaign with a message to our readers to act responsibly, safely and protect humanity. Most importantly get tested. Go to: www.testforlife.org for more information. Remember a huge number of those infected with HIV have no idea that they are infected.

R&B singer Usher is expecting his first child
By: CJ
Usher has been spotted in public apparently walking on cloud nine from the joy of the anticipated birth of his first child with Tameka Foster, his fiancée. At 28 years-old the singing superstar seems to be just a baby himself compared to Fosters status. She is 9 years his senior, a divorcee and already has 3 other children . Their baby, due in the fall, will be Usher's first child and Foster's fourth. The recently engaged couple announced their expectation in a statement to the AP Press, "we are extremely excited at this point in our lives, planning our wedding and the joy that comes with expecting our first child together. We hope people will be happy for us and respect our privacy during this happy period in our lives."
As reported earlier by YardFlex, Foster is Usher's former stylist that was released from employment by his mom, who was Usher's Manager at the time. Although she is no longer the pop sensation's Manager, it is still unclear whether Tameka has been retained as Usher's professional stylist. However, we can assume that like most Hollywood couples, she will have some influence on her partner's style. The 37-year-old stylist is recently divorced from Noontime Music co-founder Ryan Glover.

Regina Belle on board for the Port Royal Music Festival
The Port Royal Music festival has already been established as Kingston's premier music festival with its outstanding debut last year. Finally Kingston can flaunt a major event which offers the perfect combination: breath taking ambiance, and top rate musical selections including John Holt, Boyz II Men, Atlantic Star and Tessanne Chin just to name a few. This year's main event, scheduled for August 25th, promises an even more diverse and critically acclaimed line up. An already high standard has been raised, even higher and the promoters have truly out - done themselves by securing Regina Belle for Port Royal Music festival 2007.
Regina Belle is a Grammy award winning Rhythm and Blues (R and B) and contemporary urban vocalist who possesses exceptional technical ability, strength and the career to verify these claims.
Her sound is far more recognisable than her face, but Regina Belle boasts a string of timeless hits like 'Show Me the Way' (1987), 'Baby Come to Me' (1989), 'Make It Like It Was' (1989), 'What Goes Around' (1990), 'Love T.K.O' (1995) and 'Ooh Boy' (2001), and that's just to name a few. Belle never fails to mesmerise audiences with her outstanding vocal abilities. Belle's biggest musical success to date occurred in 1993, when she teamed up with Peabo Bryson for 'A Whole New World for the Aladdin' soundtrack. This single went gold and earned a number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. It also won a 1993 Billboard Award for "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal". Witnessing Regina Belle live is a rare and blessed occasion, and Port Royal have secured a real treasure in a performance from this R and B goddess.
Belle was born on July 17th 1963 in New Jersey, USA. Her earliest exposure to music was through gospel and she eventually fell in love with R and B. Belle also studied the tambourine, tuba and steel drums before graduating Dwight Marrow High. She later went on to earn her degree in opera and jazz at Rutgers University. Belle started her career as the opening act for the Manhattans with whom she recorded 'Where Did We Go Wrong' in 1986 and earned a record deal with Columbia Records. In 1987 she released her debut album 'All By Myself' which was the beginning of a prolific music career.
Belle proved herself to be an ageless and versatile star when she scored another hit single with 'Ooh Boy' in 2001. With about fifteen years of success in the music industry Belle released her latest album, 'Love Songs', in 2006, and still makes very selective appearances. "Regina Belle's career is a true example of the standard that the Port Royal music festival aspires towards. She is a premier and iconic artiste of our time. Her soulful ballads exude great depth and warmth that will be sure to breathe life into the old pirate city. Port Royal is the perfect home for an R&B treasure like Regina Belle" commented Christopher Blythe, director of Paradise Communications.
It is always an honour when Belle accepts any invitation to perform and her inclusion in the line up will make Port Royal, once again, "the richest city on earth" from August 24-26, thanks to the Port Royal Music festival.

Eve's new single with Sean Paul

Get ready to hear the summer banger of 2007 from Eve featuring Sean Paul called "Give It To You". This is Eve's second single from her forthcoming album "Here I Am" due in stores August 7!
About Eve
Ever since Eve broke on the scene in 1999 she's had a knack for making stardom look easy. Grammy Award winner. Check. Starring in blockbuster films. Check. Achieving elite status as a fashion icon. Check. The "blonde bombshell" is a triple threat entertainer in the truest sense of the term. And one of the reasons you can't take your eyes off of her is your ears. In an era when success in hip-hop is built on the portentous hype of saving the genre from imminent gloom and doom or testosterone driven beef, Eve remains a bankable star who grabs your attention with her consummate talent for crafting infectious hits. She's proof positive that hip-hop doesn't need to be saved or resurrected; it just needs a woman's touch every now and then.
![]()
Hence, following a successful four-year takeover of the Hollywood and fashion scene, Eve is set to drop Here I Am, a more mature and adventurous album, one she calls her best effort to date. "This is the album I've always wanted to make," she says. "In the past my albums have had a heavy male influence. Not this time. This one represents the woman I am today." And there's no doubt that the woman who brought us hits like "What Ya Want," and "Let Me Blow Ya Mind," is supremely confident that a mass variety of music lovers not just the hip-hop faithful will appreciate were she's coming from this time around. "I didn't just cater to a rap audience with this album," she says. "I can go to the Pop Top 40 with this because it's far more universal than anything I've done. You're going to pay attention to me because it's different."
Having people take notice of her talents has never been a problem for Eve Jihan Jeffers. During the late 90's and early millennium the Philadelphia-bred MC was a key component in the seminal rap squad the Ruff Ryders. As the only female in the crew that consisted of rappers DMX, The Lox and Drag-on, Eve stood out as the sexy, no-nonsense street savvy, ride-or-die chick that could hold her own amongst the boys. Anchored by chart-topping singles like the vivacious "Gotta Man" and the anti-domestic abuse classic "Love Is Blind" Eve's 1999 debut album Let There Be Eve…Ruff Ryder's First Lady was a double platinum success. Her 2001 sophomore release Scorpion went platinum, while garnering her crossover appeal with the Grammy Award winning mega-hit "Let Me Blow Ya Mind," featuring Gwen Stefani.
It didn't take long for Hollywood to come calling on Eve for her unique and commercially viable persona. The self-professed "pitbull in a skirt" was maturing into a glamorous avant-garde fashion goddess. In 2002 she made her silver screen debut in Vin Diesel's action blockbuster XXX, but it was her role later that year as the feisty female barber Terri, in Ice Cube’s Barbershop that would win her the most attention for future employment. UPN network quickly tapped Eve to produce and star in a self-titled sitcom about a fashion designer. With her newfound celebrity in Tinsel town it seemed appropriate that Eve would release her aptly titled third album Eve-Olution in the summer of 2002. Focused more on her growth as a person through love and relationships the album's memorable features include the alluring collaboration with Alicia Keys "Gangsta Love" and the Grammy nominated, Dr. Dre produced single "Satisfaction".

Singer Da'Ville scores his first #1 in the UK

Presently sitting pretty at number one of The Choice FM Reggae Chart is 'Always On My Mind' by Da'Ville featuring Sean Paul. The song was originally the title track of Da'Ville's second album. It got some decent airplay as a very good lovers rock track, but then came the remix featuring Mr Sean 'hitmaker' Paul, and the track was transformed from a 'nice' radio track into Da'Ville's first potential world smash. The remade video should be on the screens soon.
Da'Ville may be a new name to most, but he's been around for a hot minute as they say in Hip Hop. He first came to our attention as the lead singer of the group ARP (A Raw Perspective), they burst on to the scene with some gorgeous harmonies on a Special of 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' for the immortal Stone Love sound system. They then had a stint as Brian & Tony Gold's replacements in Kingston's studios as the backing Harmony group of choice for many a producer.
![]()
As a recording entity, they scored a few hits but their most successful moment came alongside Beenie Man on his version of Puff Daddy's take on Sting's 'Every Step You Take' aka 'Missing You'. Their closest competition in the Dancehall was T.O.K. with whom there was a reported 'beef'.
The group inevitably split up and the lead vocalist embarked upon a solo career around 2001 which brings us to the present day - almost. First of all there was confusion over how he spelt his name when he signed to Penthouse Records. Was it D.Ville, D Ville, D'Ville, Da'Ville or what. We now seem to have sorted that one out and found a decent place for the annoying apostrophe. Pedantics aside, he has a distinctly sweet voice which lends itself to both hardcore Dancehall riddims and sweet Lovers Rock or one drop tracks.
His solo hits include 'Can't Get Over You', 'Love Will Show Me the Way', 'Cruzin', 'My Ego' and 'All My Life' which he recorded with then label mate, Marcia Griffiths. The duet was nominated for an award at the 2001 Reggae Soca Awards.

The Fox is back in the News!
By -- CJ
Staff Writer
These days it seems that female celebrities are predominantly courting the legal system, from Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Naomi Campbell to Rapper Foxy Brown. However, it's the Brooklyn MC that seems to be pulling ahead for the number of incidences she's had with the law. Incidentally, it is another female that Brown had to thank last Thursday for her freedom. The Ill Na Na was faced with jail time for violating her probation, stemming from her fracas in a beauty supply store in Florida, however, Criminal Court Judge Melissa Jackson saved her the confinement and restored her probation despite objections from Attorney Mathilda Leo of the Probation Department. Judge Jackson announced, "I'm going to restore her to probation. There's no necessity for the court to monitor her."
She also complemented the smiling rapper. "I see a positive probation report here," Jackson told Brown. "It was a real struggle to get you on-board. I want to see you finish this sentence and go on to a happy life." he female Judge is apparently basing her decision on Foxy's behavior during the past few months. The Associated Press reported that, Brown, born Inga Marchand, maintained appointments with her probation officer, sought permission before leaving the state, passed her drug tests and attended required classes for anger management.
![]()
The verdict was music to Foxy's ears. Clad in a brown-and-turquoise sundress and taupe stiletto heels, the troubled rapper smiled again and thanked the judge.
Brown had been on three years' probation stemming from a 2004, incident in which she attacked two manicurists at a Chelsea nail salon. Her misdemeanor assault plea deal included a requirement that she get permission from her probation officer before leaving the state. But, as reported earlier by YardFlex, Brown violated her probation when she not only traveled out-of-state to Florida but was subsequently arrested Feb. 15, 2007 for allegedly throwing hair glue at a beauty shop employee when he asked her to leave because the shop was closing. Then to add insult to the injury, she struggled with a police officer that arrived on the scene. Foxy was charged in that incident with battery and resisting an officer with violence. She was released after posting a $1,500 bond.
Judge Jackson could have placed her behind bars a la Paris Hilton style, for up to a year for violating probation with the Florida trip but spared her.

Etana – "can't water down or dilute"
Fresh off the success of her enchanting yet gritty smash single "Wrong Address" the soulful Reggae songstress Etana is once more resonating from radio airwaves with another justified and unapologetic song entitled Roots As with her previous spring 2006 release which garnered praise and heavy rotation from both radio & party disc jocks, Etana seeks to captivate listeners with this work that highlights her strong vocal presence.
The direction of the new track is very clear and deliberate and speaks to a common emotion present in all of us. A firm meditation is the message of what can be described as a credible reggae sound credited to producer Steven Stanley with instrumental contributions from the great Sly & Robby.
Etana's Roots has a thought provoking hook that easily pulls mass respect with the simple phrase "You can't water down and dilute, you can't hide the truth from the youths." From the opening verse a sense of freedom sours high throughout each line sung at simmering tones. The befitting "Shack" directed video, easily grabs the essence and power of the single. The visual concept is very direct leaving no question of the natural passion Etana possesses for her craft. As illustrated in words the visual support shows a young free spirited woman of natural decree in a family dinning room setting being the target of scrutiny and discrimination by what are portrayed as conservative parents. As the plot gives way it becomes evident the young woman is rooted in her beliefs and won't be mislead, reminiscent of Etana and the many struggles she has had to conquer in past and recent times.
No longer a member on one of Reggae Music's most scripted Labels "Fifth Element Records," Etana has created her own Label "Freemind Music - The B.E.S Records". Etana has blossomed under the Guidance of the Sharon Burke managed Solid Agency and the help of industry acquaintances such as Big Yards Robert Livingston.
Etana will be forging ahead for the rest of 2007 with the release of her highly anticipated debut album, ETANA - The Strong One, on its way. The13 track album features productions from Dean Frazer, Robert Livingston, Steven Stanley and even the "wrong address" empress herself. Of her major assignments for the summer, Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest's Friday night "EVOLUTION" is the biggest, where she will share the stage with Dancehall greats Shaggy and Buju Banton as well as Hip Hop Veteran LL Cool J. One can expect a stimulating set from the jazzy roots/reggae singer who will be performing on the show for the first time
"I'm really gonna bring a spicy performance, some new songs from the album as well as my hit singles" she said.

OFMB Presents Reggae For Christ wins Top Caribbean Gospel Music Award
By: Janice Dayle
Tennyison Walters of OFMB Records said, "It is about Our Father's Music Business, not our earthly, but our Heavenly Father," as he explained the acronym, OFMB. The company, Our Father's Music Business Record Company Inc., was founded by husband and wife Tennyson and Karlene Walters ten years ago with a focus on producing songs of worship and praise. Today, OFMB represents and produces music for an impressive roster of artists.
On June 2, 2007 OFMB did Their Father proud by winning The Caribbean Gospel Music Award (CGMA), for Top Album of The Year.
OFMB Presents: Reggae For Christ Volume 1, won the 2007 CGMA at a ceremony held in New York. Richard Greene Junior High School was buzzing with excitement on CGMA night, as were all the singers and musicians featured on this fifth OFMB Records release, that actually received four nominations for the CGMAs this year.
![]()
Nominations were for Top Gospel CD or Group Caribbean USA: Reggae For Christ - Various Artists, Top Original Caribbean Gospel International Song: Yeah Man No Problem - Judy Mowatt and Top Caribbean Gospel Song International for title song: Reggae For Christ - Andrew Lawrence.
Founded seven years ago by the legendary Hopeton Lewis, the Caribbean Gospel Music Association hosted a week long celebration this year, that started with a family health forum on May 30th and 31st. On June 1st, a Praise and Worship gathering was held in Queens, followed by the June 2nd Awards Show. The festivities culminated on June 3rd with workshops and a formal banquet, hosted by Marie Garth.
"Christ said his purpose was to spread good news to the broken hearted, the downtrodden, to people who are in need of the great physician," Walters said, in expressing the motivation behind OFMB. "So the music that we try to present follows our motto that says, We Present Music That Speaks To The Soul and Enlightens Mankind," he expounded.
In describing further the meaning and purpose of OFMB, Walters said, "When Christ's mother was looking for him, and someone said - your parents are looking for you - he said - tell them I am about my Father's business."
That business of setting out to win more and more souls has seen OFMB artists travel throughout the world, spreading their edifying messages. They performed in China to sold out audiences on three separate tours. Walters attributes their success to OFMB's stance of holding fast to prayer and gearing everything towards ministry. "We interface and partner with many non - profit and charitable organizations, like Judy Mowatt's project in the District of Bath, St. Thomas, Jamaica, and others in South Africa and China.
With a new CD coming out in July 2007, OFMB is wasting no time in unveiling their wealth of tracks that feature sound musicianship, solid lyrics and strong deliveries - to the world. Entitled, Love Tree Inn, this much anticipated CD will include artists like Ritchie Stephens and Christopher Bentley from Inner Circle. Walters says this one continues in the same lyrical vein as Reggae For Christ, as it addresses many crucial societal issues. "For example, one song says - If you live by the sword you will die by the sword," Walters said.
Check for the Award winning, chart topping, Reggae For Christ CD at VP locations worldwide or at www.ofmb.com.

Dancehall/reggae artistes giving back to the kids of Jamaica
There are currently one hundred and thirty three children of all ages residing at the Maxfield Park Childrens Home in Kingston, Jamaica. The School is funded by charitable donations and subvention from the Government. These monies are hardly enough. The school itself sits on 6 1/2 acres of land which is divided into three (3) sections:
Jelliffe House - serves as a nursery for children from birth to six(6) years:
Backhouse - serves as a place of safety and home for boys and girls six(6) years and over;
God's House Four - contained Units with each accommodating sixteen (16) children.
Maxfield Park Children's Home is the largest and the oldest children's home in Jamaica, and serves as a place of safety for many children who have been abandoned or otherwise made homeless.
![]()
Sections of the home are badly in need of repair including the building which is used as a school for children ages three(3) to six(6) years attending the Basic School & Special Education school on the premises.
Maxfield's Children are in need of many things such as: Medication, School Supplies, Cribs, Clothing and Monies. Thanks to Companies like, Megamart (Waterloo Rd) and Sangsters Book Store it is now relatively easy for the public to help. Prescription coupons are now available in denominations of $500 and $1000 for purchase at Megamart. Sangsters Book Store has also stepped up to the plate and are allowing patrons to purchase books that are desperately needed for the children from a list supplied by the home.
Samantha Rose of Zip 103FM has started a program called "Step Up" which is set up to rally the support for the school. So far she has gotten pledges of support from Macka Diamond, Vybz Kartel, Ras Myrdack, Tarrus Riley, Junior Reid and the Owner and management of Weekendz on Constant Spring Rd. More help is needed so we ask everyone to please Step Up and help the children of Jamaica.

Ras Kassa making waves for reggae through music videos
By: Olimatta Taal
Videos play a major role in marketing and promoting artist's music. The industry has grown astronomically in the past few years with a number of directors making breakthrough commercial success. One director in particular that is making waves is Ras Kassa who recently completed Da'Ville and Sean Paul's remix video for the single, Always On My Mind.
As the most demanded director in the business, YardFlex took the time to find out what it is about this individual that has artists like Damien Marley, Sean Paul and others always requesting his work. We had to find out more about what motivates Ras Kassa, The Guru. From the desk of his editing suite, he glares up and smiles and begins to explain, "Livication within work, sleepless nights, and no limits make it happen. You have to believe in what you do and if you believe and love it, it will manifest in a way like people calling you The Guru."
![]()
Kassa didn't always direct videos, he started out as a deejay and did other things as well. "I was in a reggae band called Above Rocks with friends from Stony Hill. I used to paint and do stills with William Richards. However, it was Trevor Bailey who started making videos with some of the artist who gave me my first start," expresses The Guru.
However, it was T.O.K. that came to him one day to do a video for them when Kevin Lee was out of town. "T.O.K. were the first to put real money in a local video with a local director. I got forced into it, they checked for me and encourage me when I wasn't even ready for it myself, they actually told me that I could do it. I took their advice and we did it," says Kassa going down memory lane.
Since the first T.O.K. video, Ras Kassa has shot over 6 videos for them. He has worked with Beenie Man and shot Dude featuring Shawna from Disturbing the Peace and Ms. Ting. This was the first time that a Jamaican Director had a video featured on MTV's TRL. The whole crew was Jamaican, which was history.
The Guru has worked with Assassin on Idiot Thing and Girls Gone Wild. Gentleman has done over six videos with him, which includes Intoxicated and Superior. Welcome To Jamrock by Damien Marley was shot by Kassa, as well as six other videos for the Marley Family. He also did Sean Paul's Never Gonna Be the Same dedicated to Dodigan. He recently completed Gyptian's Beautiful video and Alborossie's Kingston Town.
Ras Kassa believes that, "Music videos are a skateboard to another level where we can discuss our opinions and our art, by using it as a vehicle to promote these ideas." Coming from the garrisons of Kingston, Kassa has focused much of his work on bringing light to the lives of the poor that struggle daily for pennies. He also highlights the beauty and happiness in the garrison regardless of the poverty.
As a devout Rastafarian, representing the Nyahbinghi battle-ax, Mau Mau warrior, he is not your ordinary director. "Rastafari, save me and if Haile Selassie never save I, I would be another man caught up in things cuz we grow inna di ghetto with guns and ting. Through the powers, we see Rastaman come together, live, and love in harmony. It puzzled me how they live so beautiful and live in unity," Kassa said. It was through this inspiration that he became motivated to develop the discipline to do something with his life, which is contributing to the world of music and videos.

As one of Jamaica's leading artist, Mutabaruka is the leading exponent of the genre known as "dub poetry".
The form derived as a natural extension of the Jamaican oral tradition and poetry, combined with a musical backdrop of the islands well known reggae rhythms. However, to call Mutabaruka merely a "dub poet" belies his accomplishments in music production, radio, film and business. He has released nine albums to date focusing on social justice and human rights .
Mutabaruka starred as Shango in the widely acclaimed Haile Gerima film, SANKOFA. His most important contribution to Afro-Jamaica culture may be his weekly radio program, The Cutting Edge which airs weekly on IRIE FM in Jamaica.
One of the most toured Jamaican artistes, Mutabaruka did a stint as guest lecturer at the University of the West Indies during his assignment as Folk Philosopher in 2003/2004. This semester, Mutabaruka will be the artist is residence at Merritt College in Oakland California. The college, from which came the Black Panther Party revolutionary movement of the 1960s, will offer a course titled, "Black Poetry: Revolution With Words," taught by the controversial Rastafarian philosopher.

Vybz Kartel attacked by Casava Piece thugs
By Carlington Wilmot
The war angel Vybz Kartel was attacked last night by a group of men in the Casava Piece area. When YardFlex.com called the Constant Spring Police Station, their reply was that they heard of the incident, but yet no one has come forth to lodge any report.
According to an eye witness, Vybz Kartel was driving through the vicinity of Casava Piece when a group of men shouted out, "Hey bleach out face ba**y bwoy deejay."
The deejay then decided to drive back the same route. The eyewitness said that there was a peaceful truce forged between Kartel and others of Casava Piece.
"I think it was planned," the eyewitness said as he explained how the assailants knew, that once they heckled Kartel, he would return to confront the issue. When Kartel returned on the scene, there was only one person, but there were others waiting inside the yard. As soon as he stepped out of his Lexus van a barrage of men rushed from out of the yard and began to stone the vehicle, attacking the deejay.
"After they began stoning the vehicle this other guy who was traveling with Vybz Kartel went into the vehicle for a machete and ran down a few of them, he could have chopped them but instead he slapped them up," the eye witness reported
Vybz Kartel suffered no injuries, but the question on the street is who is to be held responsible.

Mavado steams up Manhattan's Boucarou with his debut CD Launch
By: Janice Dayle

"Bounty is the person who help me put food on the table"
VP Records and Fader Magazine held a scorching record listening session on June 14 at Boucarou in Manhattan to introduce Mavado's debut CD to the world. The 25 track CD entitled, Gangsta For Life: The Symphony of David Brooks was unleashed in powerful Mavado style, with the DJ pausing between songs to unload a few issues to media, fans and friends, that were pent up in his mind.
Mavado did not disappoint and that was no hard feat for this strong performer, who has been on a steady winning streak, soaring to the reggae top without looking back. At this special showcase of songs from the new album, Mavado's intense delivery had him almost drifting into melodious singing rifts.
![]()
His presentation was certainly gripping the audience and while he had them properly engaged, Mavado took the time to deliver damage controlling messages, in an effort to squash controversial hearsay currently circulating in dancehall news.
"People say that there is friction between me and Bounty Killa - but there is no such thing," Movado declared. Speaking with utmost sincerity, the DJ said there was no way that he and Bounty could kick off, when it was Bounty who made him able to buy his mother anything she desired. "Him is the person who help me put food on the table," Mavado said.
Conscious of the his influence and that of the lyrics he chooses to pen and spit, Mavado used this occasion to also explain the harsh implications of his album’s title, Gangsta For Life...
"Gangsta for life don't mean to go and kill and shoot," Mavado declared, but rather it talks about the experiences of growing up in the ghetto. He said that in the ghetto people have to grow up knowing how to survive, knowing the ropes. "There is no intention to incite violence or encourage gangsterism," Mavado explained, saying his lyrics reflect realities in the ghetto, that are not necessarily his own. "I sing about what I see in the ghetto, to let people have a better idea about what goes on in there," he stated.
Mavado said his deepest hope is for people to use his lyrical lessons as blessings and not perpetuate negativity as a result of his words.
Gangsta For Life: The Symphony of David Brooks, was produced by Stephen "The Genius McGregor, Trevor "Baby G" James, Dascaka, Foota Hype, Firelinks, Nikki Zee and DJ Liquid. One of the albums best tracks speaks to the sad reality of Mavado's father passing away last year. The combination with Busy Signal is another hot pick from this made to make it, scorching CD.

A Night With R&B Greats For Father's Day
By: Olimatta Taal
It was a night down memory lane as R&B legends Billy Ocean, James Ingram and others performed to a scarcely filled lawn at the Constant Spring Golf Club. In celebration of father's day, the Kings of Souls Concert took patrons on a nostalgic ride to remember.
Christopher Martin opened up, delivering a series of covers from artists like Earth, Wind & Fire and Sam Cooke. He ended with an original piece that hand the audience in awe of his beautiful range.
Formerly The Delphonics, The Phonics took the audience by storm with hits like, La La La, I Love You. This was their first show in Jamaica since the 70s. The Manhattans presented classical hits like Shining Star and Feels So Good To Be Loved So Bad. Both groups represented the originality of soul through coordination of dance movements, dress, and harmonies.
The women went absolutely crazy when Shai hit the stage proving that they still had the charm. If I Ever Fall in Love could be heard from the lips of the female patrons singing along to this No. 2 Billboard single from the 90s.
It was clear that the people came to see Billy Ocean who was in a great jovial but mellow mood. Resembling Reggae Legends John Holt or Bob Andy, with his locks, Ocean was graceful as he had the audience eating out of the palm of his hands. This Trinidadian born musician went through a number of chart topping hits including There'll be Sad Songs To Make You Cry, Get Out of My Dreams, Suddenly, Lover Boy and When The Going Gets Tough, leaving fans thirsty for more.
"I give credit and love to Jamaica for giving Reggae music to the world," beamed Billy Ocean backstage after the show. Declaring his embrace of Rastafari he explained, "Jamaica gave Bob Marley to the world, I give thanks." This was Ocean's first time in Jamaica and he was elated to be performing for this audience.
Arriving in a stretch limousine, James Ingram made a special appearance at the Kingston show, which was part two in a series. The first one was held at Island Village in Ochio Rios on Saturday. The crowd dwindled down to about fifty people as he sang Just Once, Somewhere Out There, PYT, which he said he wrote for Michael Jackson, Where Did My Heart Go, Baby Come to Me and many other favorites. It was a night of enjoyment for all.

Elephant Man Gets Physical with P. Diddy
Elephant Man denounces the Pasa Pasa in the dancehall
By: C.J.
Staff Writer
The Energy God isn't slowing down anytime soon. As a matter of fact he is getting physical with Bad Boy Entertainment's CEO, P. Diddy, and naturally the assault is making headlines. Cops chased Elephant Man and his partner-in-crime, Haitian sensation, Wyclef Jean, through the streets of Miami. They ran, dodged and jumped off the roof of houses to avoid being incarcerated for having illegal paraphernalia in their vehicle. This is the scenario illustrated in Ele's first music video under P. Diddy's tutelage. Although it deviates from his signature dance songs, it is a "club banger." The song, Five-O, features both Diddy and Wyclef and is from Elephant's upcoming album, Let's get Physical. As evidenced by the name of the album, fans and critics will be treated to musical assaults of high impact.
The consistent hyperactive energy of the artiste combined with the hit making ability of the power producer, Diddy, will create tremors on air waves globally on August 14th when the album drops. Elephant Man embraced the opportunity to work under the Bad Boy umbrella after Diddy previewed him in concert last September and applauded his energy. The Dancehall Super Star diplomatically declined to comment on the terms and figures of the deal but was happy to add that, "VP was not left out of the deal. VP is the foundation and they made the deal happen."
![]()
With the backing of such a reputable label, Elephant's performance should charge into even higher gears. Traditionally his performances have been laced with stunts and theatrics without props. This new arrangement gives him access to better equip himself for climbing higher poles and flying over audiences. While reviewing his Five-O video at Atlantic Records corporate facade in New York City, Elephant Man shared some of his energetic motivations with YardFlex.com. According to Ele, "when an artiste performs on stage, (they) can't come with just one ammunition. Some of the people in the audience may be tired, they been waiting for hours to see me perform or they are in the back of the crowd. I have to get them in the moment and make them enjoy themself." Hence the reason for some of his pole climbing, speaker top and riding voluptuous women stunts. He also referred to Dancehall Pioneers Shabba Ranks, Lt. Stitchie, Super Cat and Ninja Man as motivators for the showcasing of his favorite costumes like Zorro, Jason and The Incredible Hulk. Elephant Man notes that they represented great examples of memorable performances. He is impressed with his predecessors and wants to represent what they did - their good showmanship.
Ele got a bit subdued at the mention of Ninja Man because it paved the way for YardFlex.com to broach the topic of the physical and verbal battles, currently dividing the Dancehall fraternity. With a fresh new multi-colored haircut, the high-profile artist defended the entertainment value of his brand, Elephant Man. "As you can see, the Pasa Pasa don't make any sense.
The (feud) will not allow the music to go to the next level," quipped Elephant Man as he responded to questions about his thoughts on the dissention among his peers within his genre, especially Beenie Man, Bounty Killa and Ninja Man. He continued, "Big-Up to Killa, Ninja and them, but I don't feel good to see them at odds. There should be Peace and Unity with a focus on selling Units (records)." The only battle Elephant is involved in is getting physical with P. Diddy, his new musical boss.
"I try to stay far from it," says Ele, "I don't need to war with anyone, it will only bring me down. I have my blessings to focus on and one day (all this negativity) will reach to a limit like Bogle." He is of course referring to the death of Dancehall Super Dancer, Bogle, who was gunned down as a result of a feud in the industry that went too far.
These days Ele is capitalizing on his new alliance with Bad Boys Entertainment and keeping his eye on the prize. He recognizes that Sean "P. Diddy" Combs is a well respected music executive who has an ear for recognizing great talent and developing big hits. In addition to touring, and honing his craft, this stable dancehall icon is embracing Diddy's vibes and aggressively attacking each beat he's decides to enhance with his vocals. The self-proclaimed "Anaconda" toting artiste reminds us that it is no secret that Puffy, as Diddy was once called, has "a link to all the producers he wants so, (he can) get every producer (he) wanna get to make great music." For this and many other reasons he is happy for his stint with Bad Boys. Overall, the reggae/dancehall sensation says, "The label will support me fully, it's nice, I enjoy working with Diddy." Elephant Mans story is a great feat not only for himself, but for Jamaica and Reggae. YardFlex will continue to follow him as he prospers with Diddy and the Bad Boy family. For the record, since Bad Boy is new to the Dancehall circuit, YardFlex.com extends a warm Congratulations for their acquisition of one of the hardest working artistes in the industry. It's a win win situation, as we are confident that Ele will continue to deliver.

Beenie Man & Sizzla in alliance with Stop Murder Music Campaign
By: C.J.
Photos by: Carlington Wilmot
Bob Marley said when the music hits you'll feel no pain. This is somewhat the mission of Gay-rights activist Peter Thatchell and his Stop Murder Music campaign. His recently launched Reggae Compassionate Act, states they "respect and uphold the rights of all individuals to live without violence due to their religion, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity or gender."
International Reggae artistes Beenie Man and Sizzla agree. Reliable sources disclosed that both historically anti-gay artistes have signed a new agreement that encourage the global community to enjoy their music without fear of violence. The overall gist of the agreement resonates that "there's no space in the music community for hatred and prejudice, including no place for racism, violence, sexism or homophobia." Therefore, they are in a contractual agreement, "not to make statements or perform songs that incite hatred or violence against anyone from any community."
![]()
Thatchell acknowledges that although the Act is a first step, it represents a quantum leap in combating a history of aggressive homophobic attitudes and lyrics within the reggae/dancehall genre. He explained that, "The Reggae Compassionate Act is a big breakthrough. The singers' rejection of homophobia and sexism is an important milestone. We rejoice at their new commitment to music without prejudice. Having these major reggae stars renounce homophobia will influence their fans and the wider public to rethink bigoted attitudes."
Even though sources have confirmed that Beenie Man and Sizzla are a part of the Stop Murder Music Campaign; there is a glaring omission of other artistes with anti-gay lyrics who have yet to sign up for the campaign, including TOK, Capleton, Elephant Man, Bounty Killa, Vybz Kartel, and Buju Banton.
We caught up with Capleton briefly and he thinks that his fellow artistes did not sign such an agreement. However, he is unaware of such an Act. According to the fireman King Shango, "eeh eeh, no one has contacted me and I don't know what this is all about."
At current press time, we were unable to reach Beenie Man and Sizzla for comments. As soon as Yardflex gets it from the horses’ mouth, it will be in print. This is definitely an interesting story to follow as many of these prominent artiste have been losing fans, funds and following due to their stance on the lesbian and gay lifestyle. Sizzla had Tours in Europe cancelled as a result of groups like OutRage' lobby. OutRage is a direct action campaigning group in the United Kingdom, which was formed to fight for the rights of lesbian, gay and bisexual people.
According to OutRage, in April 2002, it was Sizzla who, at a reggae concert in Chicago boasted that he kills queers; and also incited the audience to murder gays and lesbians: "mi nuh go tek back mi chat... mi kill sodomite and ba**yman dem bring aids and disease pon people... shot an kill dem, mi nuh go tek back mi chat." Again, for those astist like Sizzla Kolanji and Beenie Man, their public words and militant stance against gays and lesbian may comeback to haunt their careers.

YardFlex extends a Happy Fathers Day to all fathers.
The Father of mankind prepared a way for humans with creation. We are thankful for not only this example but also for all fathers who consciously copy such a great example of planning and preparing the way.
To the good the bad and indifferent - believers in God or unbelievers, absolute deadbeat or occasional check see, mothers who have been both ma and pa - we send all the best wishes for Fathers Day 2007.
It is important too that we acknowledge this era, with its wars, both international and urban. On these battlefields, where many fathers have taken final falls, leadership and love that cannot be equaled, is swallowed up. Our best wishes go also to families who miss their fathers today.

We thank our Heavenly Father:
A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. Psalm 68:5
"...To think that the great God who created you cares about every detail in your life. He is sensitive to your needs. He understands pain, He Himself, having experienced the loss of his stepfather Joseph and the separation from His Heavenly Father while He was on the cross. Before he died on the cross, He took care of His mother, Mary who was not only a widow, but would lose her Son to a cruel death. Jesus provided us with family. His Heavenly Father as our Father so that we can be a part of the family of God. He gives comfort, love and security. We belong to the family of God."

Back in the days with Beenie Man
Beenie Man recorded a slew of hit songs throughout the 90's that captured the dancehall arena, dancehall fans were busy learning and practicing the new dance move "World Dance", which was followed by more hit songs such as "Defend It" and "Dis Unu Fi Hear", "Damsel Ship", "Suzuki", "Ole Dawg", "Slam", "Ketteh Drum" and many more.
His performance in the music industry landed him the title DJ of the year in 1994, the same year that these singles were released. This was a significant year for Beenie Man; he also released his debut album which was titled "Blessed" which included a grip of hit songs.
By now, Beenie man had gone international; his songs were blazing the clubs and radio stations in England. The following year was even bigger and more successful for Beenie Man; he was doing major collaborations with Dennis Brown, Triston Palmer and Mad Cobra. In fact his biggest collaborations for that era were with Lady Saw for the song "Healing" and "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" that he did with Third World. This was another fantastic year for Beenie Man and he was back in line for DJ of the year for the second consecutive time...
![]()
This upcoming summer season has shaped up to be a very busy one for Beenie Man. He's currently schedule for a European Festival Tour at the end of June and runs during the month of July where he's also confirmed for Sumfest - Mo-Bay, Good Year Oval - St. Thomas, Connecticut and Miami. Currently, he has a lot of videos and songs in rotation both on the Cable Stations, Radio Stations and on the Charts.
