MUSIC REVIEW: Lady Saw Walk Out CD
Lady Saw, Walk Out (VP): American pop music audiences may mainly know Lady Saw from her cameo on No Doubt's Grammy-winning 2003 single, Underneath It All. But the reggae vocalist has more than a decade of music under her belt, or shall we say under her skirt? Respected as dancehall's first lady in Jamaica, Lady Saw's post-feminist, sex-obsessed lyrics often extol the power of women's sex organs.
On her eighth solo disc, Walk Out, she makes pains to balance the raunchiness with street anthems and some self-help sentimentalism. Me and My Crew (The Rae) is a flag-waving party song, punctuated by sharp turntable scratches. Meanwhile, the electro-riddim of Power of the Pum is all dark seduction, with Lady Saw bragging about her nookie: "Gotta lotta men losing their senses/ just to get close and be friends/ me have big men jumping wire fences."
![]()
Yet Lady Saw displays a vulnerable side too. The inspirational No Less Than A Woman addresses female infertility. And the lilting R&B of Not the World's Prettiest is a love-yourself rejoinder to the narrow Western standards of beauty.
The slight earnestness adds a humane touch to her catalog of hardcore tracks, proving that Lady Saw endures not only because of her sharp tongue but her big heart.

Even in Rain, The Ocean Spray Wellfest A Success
By: Olimatta Taal

The Annual Ocean Spray Wellfest was held on April 21 and 22, 2007 at the beautiful Hope Gardens, St. Andrew. On the first day nonstop rain welcomed, but did not dampen the proceedings that continued despite the weather. Nothing could stop patrons from supporting the event.
Businesses, organizations, medical associates, and individuals focused on ways to be healthy - live a healthy lifestyle and eat healthily. Hundreds of creative booths hosted their products and services, the majority of them made in Jamaica.
![]()
One section of the festival was dedicated to different forms of personal pampering. Highlights included a showcase of the various holistic and traditional methods of healing such as free massages, reiki and reflexology, as well as natural healing through herbs, vitamins, and teas.
A number of Medical personnel were available to check blood pressure, give advice on dealing with medical conditions and offer general support to those with medical problems. This seemed to be very beneficial for especially the elderly who were present.
All types of food and drinks were available, with many manufacturers providing samples of their goods. There were games and tons of fun for the children with many returning home carrying gifts they had won based on their knowledge of healthy living.
The stage show proved to be a favorite, because regardless of the rain, people enjoyed themselves, singing along to their artist. Etana delivered conscious messages through her sultry sound. Taurus Riley swayed the people with his soothing voice. Chalice captured the crowd after twenty years of separation and Judy Mowatt commanded the audience through her delivery and spirituality.

Straight facts on Chlamydia - 90 million people are infected worldwide
By: Dr. S. Lawson
Chlamydia is the most commonly reported infectious disease in the United States causing approximately 4 million infections annually. Today, teenage girls have the highest rates of Chlamydia infection worldwide. Studies conducted show that 1 in 9 women are infected with Chlamydia with higher prevalence between the ages 16-24. Approximately 90 million people are infected worldwide. Fifty percent of the men and seventy five percent of women infected with Chlamydia are asymptomatic (present without symptoms).
Transmitted during oral, vaginal and anal sex, through the blood during pregnancy as well as during vaginal delivery of a newborn, Chlamydia is a curable sexually transmitted infection (STI). Chlamydia trachomatis can be transmitted via aerosolize vapors (similar to tuberculosis). This type of infection does not cause obvious clinical infection but contributes to other severe medical complications such as intractable pain syndrome, heart disease, circulatory disturbances, diabetes, reactive arthritis and cancer.
![]()
Chlamydia trachomatis is the species that causes Chlamydia (STI), conjunctivitis (pink eye) and pneumonia in infants as well as Lymphogranuloma Venereum (LGV). Conjunctivitis (pink eye) can cause blindness in the newborn. LGV is caused by this strain of Chlamydia, that mostly affects people in the tropical climate and can invade the skin through tiny cuts, leading to inflamed rectum (proctitis), and skin ulcers. LGV can infect lymph nodes causing genital problems, pain, proctitis inflamed rectum), skin breakdown (ulceration) and swelling.
As a parasite that behaves like a virus, Chlamydia trachomatis is an atypical bacteria. Infected men can act as a reservoir of Chlamydia infection that can contribute to re-infection of their partners. Early treatment and frequent screening of susceptible individuals is critical to prevent severe complications. Inadequately treated infections and the presence of heavy metals in the body may cause Chlamydia resistance to antibiotics leading to persistence subclinical (not detected by routine diagnostic test) infections that can contribute to other medical complications.
Women can carry Chlamydia for years without knowing they are infected. Symptoms can worsen progressively depending on immune status and whether adequate treatment was initiated early enough. Symptoms can begin up to 3 weeks after contracting the infection. Signs and symptoms may present themselves as fever, milky or yellow mucus-like vaginal discharge in women and penial discharge in men. There can also be constant lower abdominal pain, urinary frequency urgency, pain during urination (urithritis), pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia), spotting between periods, easily induced endocervical bleeding, inflammation of the cervix (15% of women with Chlamydia infection will develop cervicitis), pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), painful and swollen testes (epididymitis) and inflamed prostate (prostitis). Chlamydia infection can causes infection of vaginal walls (mucosa) making it more vulnerable to HIV infection.
Be aware that throat infection (pharyngitis) can be caused by Chlamydia due to oral sex. The Chlamydia organism has also recently been discovered in certain plaques that cause heart disease, and circulatory disturbances. Chlamydia infection of the pancreas can contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes.
High incidents of Chlamydia infection are found within single individuals, people of poor socio-economical status, minorities - including non-white race, and those aged less than 19 years old. It is also found primarily amongst people who have multiple sexual partners, anal sexual intercourse, and those abusing drugs and alcohol. A significant number of infections are contracted during pregnancy.
In the United States 1 million women will develop Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) annually and of these 20% will become infertile. Forty percent of women with untreated Chlamydia infections will develop PID. PID occurs when the infection progresses from the vagina into the tubes then invading the ovaries and pelvic cavity. Scar tissues and adhesions in the tubes and pelvic cavity result in severe pain and ectopic (pregnancy outside of the womb) pregnancies. Ectopic Pregnancy is a common cause of death among poor teenagers in the United States. Tubal pregnancy is the leading cause of first trimester pregnancy-related death in American women. Pelvic infections can eventually spread to the liver causing perihepatitis (infection around the liver).
Chlamydia infection can be diagnosed by visual inspection, culture of discharge or secretion, or DNA amplification of secretions (PCR). Recently, a new test, Amplicor Chlamydia trachomatis test, became available which is carried out using a sample of urine, a swab from a woman's cervix or urethra with available results within 4 hours. Another available test allows a woman to obtain self-administer vaginal swab and place into a container for testing.
There are one day and seven day treatments available that are equally as effective, however those infected should discuss particularly - impaired liver function, irregular heartbeat and of course pregnancy with their physician. Some treatments may cause gastro intestinal problems, while others can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills as well as cause break through bleeding, increasing the risk of unwanted pregnancy. Those infected should continue taking their medication even after symptoms subside to avoid the emergence of resistant organisms.
Heavy metal accumulation in the body may contribute to Chlamydia resistance to antibiotics. Studies suggest the possibility of the development of autoimmune dysfunction due to mercury toxicity based on genetic susceptibility. Heavy metal like mercury, lead and aluminum are typically found in high concentration at areas of Subclinical infections caused by Chlamydia. Amalgam dental fillings constantly emit mercury vapor which is absorbed via the lung. Tap water is another good source of this toxic metal. Where there is excessive accumulation of aluminum and mercury in the brain Chlamydia trachomatis infections often coexist (think about Alzheimer's disease).
PREVENTION
Regular screening for Chlamydia infection of sexual partners (especially teenagers), reducing the number of sexual partners, the use of latex condoms (even with oral sex), and avoiding judgment altering intoxicating substances, are actions that may reduce the incidence of Chlamydia infections. Drinking and cooking with filtered water only, sweating (through regular exercise or otherwise), and using natural substances to remove heavy metals from the body can reduce the accumulation of mercury and complications associated with Chlamydia infections.
One thing to keep in mind is that antibiotics abuse makes us more vulnerable to cancers such as breast cancer and heart disease – making it doubly important to avert Chlamydia infections and its subsequent treatment.

The summer belongs to TOK: - TOK heads to Europe for summer tour

Dancehall's vivacious quartet TOK will be taking their signature sound on a European tour this summer. The month long tour is expected to start early July in The Netherlands and later spread throughout the rest of Europe.
TOK is no stranger to Europe, in fact they have been visiting the continent for five years now, performing at some of the most prominent shows and night spots there.
The group, known for their high energy on stage, has a catalogue of hit songs fit for almost any occasion. It is no surprise then that the Europeans have embraced the quartet, making sure their visits are memorable. According to group member Roshaun, "Europe is a place away from home where the people dem love us bad… they treat us like royalties."
![]()
TOK will also be blazing Jamaica this summer. Immediately after their European tour, they will head back home for a big summer party "Bounce". Bounce is an annual party, hosted by TOK and normally features premiere dancehall entertainers. Last year the show featured Shaggy, Lady Saw and others.
The summer definitely belongs to TOK. With a European tour on the brink and a sizzling beach party in the pipeline, one would think that the group's sack is full for this summer - think again. Their third album is on the way as well and it is expected to be released this summer. TOK has released two albums, namely My Crew, My Dogs and Unknown Language respectively. The unnamed album is currently being worked on and the group is ensuring that it is very artistic, clean and entertaining.
Currently, TOK's latest singles are Guardian Angel on the Guardian Angel rhythm produced by local Disc Jockey, Arif Cooper and We Don't Miss. These songs have been attacking the local radio stations and charts. Two more singles are expected to be released one on the Resolution rhythm called Resolution and the other one called Got It Going On, on an independent rhythm. TOK has released a barrage of hit songs over the years that have gained international credit, the most recent of which is Footprints that was featured on BET and MTV.
Four different personalities combine to form the unique group TOK and they are on a journey not only to share their talent with the rest of the world but to further highlight Jamaica on the map.
The next stop for TOK is the European tour this summer that is likely to be extended based on requests for more shows.

Mr. Vegas cut sick leave short - gearing up for more intense performances

Doctors ordered him to take two weeks bed rest after being diagnosed with pericarditis, which is an inflammation of the lining around the heart (the pericardium) causing chest pain and accumulation of fluid around the heart.
Still the singjay could not resist the lure of pleasing his many fans, so the minute he felt a little better he ignored doctors orders and performed in St Thomas and Virgin Islands to the delight of all those who turned out.
![]()
"I couldn't believe it, the event enjoyed a full turnout and the fans were kinda hoping to still see me," Vegas said in amazement. He drummed up enough strength to give them what they turned out to see, 'Hot Wuk', 'Lean Wid It', 'Do You Know', 'Tek Weh Yuhself' and 'Nuh Friend From Dem'.
Following his sizzling performance, Vegas is now under strict instruction to adhere to a one-week bed rest or risk facing the worsening of the pericarditis. But no fear, the singjay says, in another two weeks he will once again be hitting the road doing what he does best, "performing for his many fans". His album is now in the final stages and set for a summer release...in the meantime look out for more big tunes from Vegas.

As early as before the sun could rise Tuesday morning, YardFlex.com news room began fielding numerous phone calls from both local and international concerned fans wanting to know if the rumour circulating was of any truth. Some callers said that they heard Beenie Man stabbed up his wife and then cut the veins on his wrist, while others said D'Angel went clubbing and got back home too late – causing friction. Some people were saying feuding between the two had something to do with Marco Dean and they even went as far as to say it's probably because she was still making links with the Warlord Bounty Killer. But after careful investigation all of these nasty allegations turn out not be true.
YardFlex.com made several attempts to get in touch with the couple to clear the air of this bloody rumour but was not successful in reaching any of them. After making a final attempt late Tuesday evening a close member of the Mafia House family had this to say.
"None of what people are saying is true, the couple is at home relaxing, no more comments," the source said before hanging up the phone.
According to one artiste close to the couple who did not wish to have his name on the record explained that, "They had a little fight nothing big, and we all know that in every relationship there will be disagreements, but I think it's time for the public to stop wishing bad for the couple because they are living happily than how most of us are living right and I respect both of them."
THIS IS WHAT D'ANGEL HAS TO SAY ABOUT BADMIND PEOPLE

Ce'cile and Smujji sizzle in 'Take It Off" video

Ce'Cile and England-based artiste Smujji positively sizzled in the video for 'Take It Off'.
The video for the hot collaboration between himself and dancehall diva Ce'Cile was done under the direction of RXTA. In it Ce'Cile tantalized with her alluring, seductive looks and come on signals while Smujji positively salivated around the pool table. It was fun to watch the singer playing pool while it clearly showed that his mind was on anything but, as glimpses into his thought processes revealed he was more interested in 'taking it off!"
The two lit up the screen and the video was further enhanced by the gyrating girls in the background all adding to exciting appeal of it.
![]()
Smujji made his album debut with 'True Colours' released on Jamdown UK in 2005 and he has not looked back as he continue to make his presence felt in the music world. He is now ready to unleash his second album which will be produced by some of the hottest producers in the UK, Jamaica and US.
Classy Ce'Cile is now getting back into the groove and what a look she has returned with! Her collaboration is not the only hot song she has running the place right now. She is very busy with her fingers in a lot of pies including some local productions among them the Jam
Down rhythm on the Danger Zone label on which she has a song by the same name.
In it Ce'Cile's fans get a new glimpse to her as she talks about the nicer side of Jamaica. When it comes to creativity and versatility, then Ce'Cile has got it tapped. The classy diva of the dancehall has a lot more in store and as for Smujji…stay tuned he is hot!

Mind Control's accolades keep raining in
"It's passion and soul that sets apart your average, competent reggae group from the likes of a Stephen Marley, who brought a nine-piece backing outfit - a guitarist, drummer, bassist, two keyboardists, a percussionist, two female backup singers, and a guy whose job it was to wave and twirl a Rasta flag all night - plus his younger brother Damian "Junior Gong" Marley to a very packed Showbox on Friday night for a phenomenal and frequently transcendent two-hour performance. Reggae's rarely sounded this joyful and intense, at least not to my ears."
(Seattle Weekly, April 14, 2007: Review of Stephen Marley at the Showbox - April 13)
"Mind Control is polished, assured and casually virtuosic in a way that most premieres are raw, edgy and ferociously single-minded. In the same way that hip-hop producers like Timbaland and Just Blaze have renewed rap by emphasizing the music's omnivorous rhythmic appetites, Stephen Marley updates Jamaican music for an era of globalized pop by tracing the connections between local styles."

(SFGate.com, April 15, 2007)
"The Traffic Jam, with its rubbery bassline, is guaranteed to rock your car stereo".
(People Magazine, April 23, 2007)
"When it comes to music royalty, it doesn't come more important than the Marleys. The sons of Bob Marley have been successful the world over, thanks largely in part to the behind-the-scenes magic of Stephen Marley."

Shop Boyz Party Like A Rockstar
Universal Republic Records has entered into an agreement with OnDeck Records to market, distribute and release the hot new genre-defying hip hop trio the SHOP BOYZ, whose debut single "Party Like A Rockstar," scored as the 2nd most added new single at urban radio last week, continuing to build excitement ahead of its official Tuesday, April 10 single release date.
Launched by OnDeck Records, the SHOP BOYZ' initial breakthrough has been forged by Atlanta label's CEO, Brian 'Bingo' Ward, who has skillfully guided the groundbreaking trio's rapid trajectory into the mainstream. The group's riotous blast of hip hop-meets-rock has transformed the southern hip hop landscape, emerging from Atlanta's underground urban music scene and inspiring a new punk wave among the south's hip hop tastemakers. With major labels in hot pursuit of the group since the beginning of 2007, the three members, Fat, Meany, and Sheed are being hailed as new pioneers of the genre. "We are excited to be in business with Brian Ward and OnDeck Records," stated Monte Lipman, President Of Universal Republic Records. "Brian is a great recruiter of talent and the SHOP BOYZ exemplifies the cutting edge of a bold new force in hip hop. Their willingness to go beyond the cookie-cutter approach in every way fits our label's artist-driven mission like a glove."
![]()
Brian B. Ward, CEO of OnDeck Records also commented: "OnDeck and The "Party Like A Rock Star," movement is already spreading well beyond the confines of the south. Monte Lipman and Universal Republic's great track record of thinking out-of-the-box and providing the ultimate exposure for their artists will ensure the SHOP BOYZ stay 'street' and connect with the millions of fans hungering for something new in hip hop."
Current plans call for the debut SHOP BOYZ album, Rockstar Mentality, to be released by Universal Republic on June 26. The group will be shooting a much anticipated video for "Party Like A Rockstar," later this week, to be directed by Marc Klasfeld (Nelly, Juvenile, Ludacris, Foo Fighters) and to be shot in their native Atlanta.

Elephant Man's album 'Lets Get Physical' set to be released on June 26 - Bad Boy Ent.
By: Joseph Cunningham
Oneil Bryan a.k.a Elephant Man, has been keen on getting another album out since his last in 2003 called, Good 2 Go. A new album has finally transpired bearing the title, Lets Get Physical, that befits his explosive energy. During his hiatus, Elephant Man did singles that attracted Hip Hop Mogul Sean Diddy Combs who in turn signed the 'Energy God' to his label Bad Boy Entertainment. "The signing is a fulfillment of one of my objectives in the musical industry," the Energy God said in describing that aim as crossing over and attracting top labels.
Elephant Man, who exhibits a 'bad boy' persona feels in good company with label mates such as R&B/Hip Hop statesmen and prodigies, Loon, Young Joc and Danity Kane. The synergy of Dancehall and Hip/Hop content should bring a dynamic album, set to be released June 26.
As expected, the affiliation will see the Energy God collaborating with a myriad of 'Top' artistes. This upcoming album features Wyclef Jean on the track FiveO.. The signing and his new album should breathe fresh life into Elephant's musical career, to a level comparable to the days when he sparred on tracks with the likes of Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz, Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson.
![]()
Born in 1974, his overly large ears as a child earned Elephant Man the nickname 'Dumbo Elephant' from his classmates in the Seaview Gardens area of Kingston, Jamaica. Shabba Ranks and Bounty Killer were Seaview residents at the time, and with King Jammy's studio not so far away, Elephant Man had an early exposure to dancehall culture.
Elephant Man often sang at the gates of Ranks and Jammy's studios, Bounty Killer heard him and suggested forming a group with other Seaview teens. The group was originally called the Seaview Family, but after Bounty Killer had a massive hit with the song Big Guns Scare Dem, the group's name changed to Scare Dem Crew. Scare Dem Crew only released one album but played multiple festivals around Jamaica, giving Elephant Man a chance to refine his on-stage persona. Dancehall night at 1998's Reggae Sumfest was a highlight, with Elephant Man climbing up a television camera crane and delivering his energetic rhymes high above the audience.
After members of the Scare Dem started to question the DJ's ability to be a team player, he then left the group feeling disrespected. Going solo had its advantages, as Elephant Man was able to incorporate the hip-hop rhythms he loved on his full-length debut, Comin' 4 You, released by Greensleeves in 2000. The title cut from his second release, Log On, was a huge hit and the album's WTC attacks commentary attracted a wealth of attention from the press. A duet with Elephant Man and one of his favourite rappers, Busta Rhymes, appears on a remix of Lil Jon's Get Low and Mariah Carey recruited the DJ for an appearance on her Charmbracelet album. Atlantic Records took note of Elephant Man's growing popularity and released his major-label debut, Good 2 Go, in late 2003 while the single, Pon di River, Pon di Bank, took urban radio by storm.
We expect an 'Elephantastic' album just by looking at the Energy God's resources but we as fans/public will need to hear and feel the energy of the Elephant before we pass our verdict.

Kalonji Records to reintroduce Juni Platinum to the world
By: Joseph Cunningham
Lady Juni is back! In 1987 a 17 year-old student at Immaculate Conception High School for Girls, in Jamaica, released a song titled, 'Naah Get Punaani'. The song created quite a stir because of its 'moral breach' at a time when children were to be seen and not heard. As if that was not enough, the song sold gold - 500,000 records.
Oh yes! That means before the rise of Shabba Ranks, Super Cat, Bounty Killa and Beenie Man, hardcore Dancehall had been introduced to the international mainstream!
"As a young girl who just liked music and was doing it for enjoyment, I did not become aware of how successful the song was until I made a trip to the United States, and the distributor told me the song was doing well in both white and black communities," explained the musician now known as Juni Platinum. She added that she was not expecting anything 'big' from the track, and as such she was pleasantly surprised because she was not following its progress.
![]()
Back then, Juni Platinum was under the auspices of deceased legendary Reggae producer King Tubby, who she said educated her about the business aspect of the music industry. Along with Punaani, King Tubby's productions Tell Yuh Wah Police Can Do and Jamaican Man, became materials that kept the young star in the spotlight.
It is however certain that there are many persons wondering why they have not seen or heard Juni Platinum for the last 10 years. Well, after seven years in the church, a period during which she scored two number ones on Gospel charts, Juni Platinum has returned to her first love, the Dancehall. Now signed to Kalonji Records, a 'stable' governed by Reggae superstar, Sizzla Kalonji, she has been on the road and doing well - notably with a well received performance at the recently held Spring Break concert in Jamaica.
"After that performance I got phone calls from two California, USA, based recording companies that are interested in signing me," she revealed. She added that both companies were attracted to her unique sound, especially for a 'Jamaican girl'. "I'm perfecting an international sound. I'm not focused on local success, I'm more interested in platinum sales and the Grammy awards," she said.
Kalonji Records is currently in charge of reintroducing Juni Platinum to the world and she expresses confidence in Sizzla's ability to market the album effectively. The album is tentatively titled Jah Calling and has 17 tracks, some of which are voiced in two foreign languages, Dutch and Papiamento. According to Juni, the album will be an 'intelligent one', having a universal appeal.
Places to catch Juni Platinum in performance are Sizzla's Earth-day celebration on April 17 and Ras Murdock's Bash later this month.
