Nadine Sutherland , Eight76 Prep For "Big Tingz"

Nadine-Sutherland-reggae-music-dancehall-sexygirls-sexy-girl-naked.jpgJamaican artist Nadine Sutherland has just wrapped shooting on the music video for her newest hit single "Big Tingz" from her upcoming album Call My Name on Eight76 Records (in stores April 3, 2007).

The upbeat single was released to radio earlier this month, and has quickly become a staple at reggae radio in South Florida and is picking up steam all over the Caribbean. Shot on location at the beautiful Negril Escape resort in Negril, Jamaica the video is directed by Michelle Barnes (Red Rat's "Crying For My People" and Macka Diamond's "Bun Him") of Mad Multimedia Productions and choreographed by local dancers Erica Allen, Anika Thomas, and Nakoy Asher.

Every member of the cast and crew was local, from the stylists to the set auditors. Eight76 Records exec Myshjua Archibald flew down to oversee the shoot and was thrilled with the results. "The talent in Jamaica always blows me away.

There is so much brilliance there, both aesthetically and creatively, and I get excited just watching these young people express themselves. Very professional as well - we came in on schedule and under budget." The video showcases several facets of Nadine and will premiere in early March. Some photos and out-takes from the shoot will be available on the eight76 website and their myspace page, but don't expect to see too much. "We don't want to spoil the effect of the premiere by giving away too much beforehand", says Archibald. Sutherland will also perform the song at several of the official events planned for the 2007 World Cup Cricket series taking place March 5 through April 28.

After several years out of the musical spotlight, Nadine's profile has stepped up in a major way since hooking up with Eight76 Records a little more than a year ago. The association has already produced two hit singles, "Keep Me Safe" and "Cyan Tek It" (featuring Chrisinti) and both label and artist promise that the best is yet to come.

"Big Tingz" is a significant choice for the first single from the album. Written by Nadine and producer Kenroy 'YahBreeze' Archibald the song was the first track recorded specifically for the new album. "I work with a lot of different producers, and YahBreeze is definitely one of my favorites," says Nadine. "I always write, and the vibe and connection was there instantly with us. I immediately wanted to do more songs. We worked together the whole way." Nadine is also credited as a co-producer on the album. For the next two months, preview music will be available on both Nadine's myspace page and the label's page. There will also be snippets on their distributor's website, CED Entertainment Distribution. "We are excited and proud to be working with Eight76 Records and Nadine Sutherland on Call My Name," said CEO Steve Lane. "This album is great, and the label continues to impress me with their hard work and integrity as well as talent."

Stephen Marley North America concert tour - featuring "Jr Gong" and K'Naan

"The album is a quiet masterpiece - easily the best effort from a Marley progeny yet" (Interview Magazine)

Stephen Marley, GRAMMY winning artist and producer has announced that he is launching a much anticipated tour this spring. Kicking off on Friday, March 30, the tour is happening in association with the Ghetto Youths International Foundation and will feature special guest 'Jr. Gong.' The tour will run through May, hitting more than 40 cities with acclaimed artist K'naan also in tow.

Billed as the Mind Control North American tour, Ghetto Youths International will contribute one dollar from every ticket sold to the Marley's homegrown charity, The Ghetto Youth Foundation, which provides aid and programs to children struggling in impoverished and war-ravaged conditions around the globe. Highlights of the 3-month tour of Canada and the US will also include performances at the World Ski & Snowboard Championships in Whistler, British Columbia on Sunday, April 15, Coachella Music Festival in Indio, CA on Friday, April 27, and Jazzfest in New Orleans on Saturday, May 5.

Stephen is preparing the cross-country trek in support of his soon-to-be released solo debut album Mind Control (Tuff Gong/ Ghetto Youths/ Universal-Republic) released on Tuesday, March 20. The album has been receiving accolades in the press with early reviews calling the release "irresistible...an impressive offering" (Urb Magazine) and "4 stars...heir to reggae's royal family honors dad's legacy....dance-hall-inflected reggae/ hip-hop jams, carefully balancing political fire and island-life vibe. His ease with both elements would make his father proud" (Spin Magazine).

Stephen will be showcasing new songs from the release, which includes guest appearances from Mos Def and Ben Harper. Standout tracks include gems such as the mesmerizing Chase Dem, and the soulful serenade Hey Baby. The album also features the hit track "The Traffic Jam," which is currently exploding onto charts in Jamaica and England and showing early spins on several US Rhythmic/Crossover stations. Marley, along with Damian, debuted the track live this past month on the Jimmy Kimmel Show.

For Stephen, 2006 was a coming-out party of sorts. He scored his fifth GRAMMY award for his triumphant co-production work on brother Damian 'Jr.Gong' Marley's acclaimed RIAA certified Gold disc Welcome To Jamrock, to date garnering him the most GRAMMY awards of any Marley and more than any other Reggae artist in history. Stephen also embarked on two U.S. concert tours last year,

including the acclaimed "Bob Marley Roots, Rock Reggae Festival," where brothers Stephen and Ziggy Marley joined together for the first time ever with reggae pioneer Bunny Wailer.

Music heads have been up on Stephen's work for years, whether for collaborations with R&B stars like Erykah Badu or his part on the dancehall burner "It Was Written," and especially after Chant Down Babylon, the platinum-selling star-studded Bob Marley tribute he produced. A veteran of the family's fertile launching pad, Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers, Stephen has emerged in recent years as a pivotal production and creative force, helping to oversee Marley enterprises like Tuff Gong Records and its umbrella imprint Ghetto Youths.

Idonia and Mavado Thugs Clashes on Stage

Mavado-aidonia-idonia-dancehall-bounty-killer-sexygirls.jpg

On Tuesday February 20th, The Queen's School hosted their annual Sports Day, on the eve of Ash Wednesday. However after all the athletic events, there was a concert which featured the likes of LeftSide and Esco, Wayne Marshall, Richie Stephens, Idonia and Mavado.

According to a teacher at The Queens School, "the artsist were brought in the canteen to hangout until it was their time to perform onstage; Mavado, Wayne Marshall, LeftSide and Esco and Richie Stephens were all in the canteen except for Idonia. When he arrived he did not go into the canteen, he stood near the tent where the selector was, with his entourage".

When YardFlex.com contacted a past student of The Queen's School who helped with the preparation of the concert, she related the incident saying, "Wayne Marshall, LeftSide and Esco and Idonia were all onstage sharing the mike alternately. However Mavado stood afar off viewing the performances, the selector then started playing the Drumline riddim and then I saw Mavado grabbed a mike and proceeded onstage bellowing 'New name fi informer a Mr. Palmer', after which a huge bundle of both Idonia's entourage and Mavado's entourage starting throwing blows at each other. Due to the blows onstage the selector had to stop playing and throughout the fight it was Selector Foota Hype, who came with Mavado, threw derogatory words at Idonia's entourage."

After all this YardFlex.com was informed by a teacher of the school that the other artistes drove out while Idonia was still onstage addressing the students 'Mi nuh wah nuh baddi seh a Aidonia mash up dem ting, unu notice me still deh pon stage, mi nuh have nuh knife, me nuh inna di knife ting!".

However, contacts were made to both parties for comments on the incident, but we were unsuccessful.

Breast Cancer - over 40,000 deaths occur annually

By: Dr. S. Lawson

breast&doctor.jpgOne in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that over 200,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed annually. It makes breast cancer the most common cancer in women. It is estimated that over 40,000 deaths from breast cancer occur annually in the Unites States. This makes breast cancer the second most common cause of death in women ages 20-59.

The precise etiology is unknown. Risk factors include genetics, endocrine, and environmental/lifestyle. Family history may be the most significant factor for the development of breast cancer. Women whose mothers develop breast cancer less than sixty years old has twice the relative risk (risk of developing breast cancer in comparison to the general population). If a woman has two first degree relatives (mother/sister) with breast cancer, the relative risk increases four times. Women with atypical hyperplasia (benign breast disease) have a relative risk of three times. Women with lobular carcinoma In Situ (CIS) have a relative risk of seven times.

BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 are tumor suppressor genes that when mutated increases the lifetime risk of breast cancer. Women who have these mutated genes tend to be diagnosed at a younger age and have an 80 to 90% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Women who express an increase in the P185HER2 receptor are more susceptible to develop breast malignancy. Estrogen dominance, early monarchy, late menopause, nulliparity, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and birth control pill (BCP) all have a one to two lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Environmental risk factors include alcohol use, radiation exposure, social economical factors, and an increase in age.

Breast cancer is highly treatable therefore it is recommended that screening be done for early detection. The ACS recommends monthly breast self-examination from the age of 20. This may lead to early diagnosis and an increase in survival. The 2nd screening recommendation is the physician’s annual breast examination. The reason for a physician’s breast examination is that 10% of palpable masses are missed by mammography. The ACS recommends annual screening mammography from age 40 onwards. Many women are asymptomatic when these tumors are found by screening mammograms.

There are 4 different stages at which breast cancer is diagnosed. Stage 1 is when the tumor is less than 2 cm. and has no lymph node involvement and no metastasis (5 yr. survival is 70-90%). Stage 2 is when the tumor is 2-5 cm. with lymph node involvement and no metastasis (5 yr. survival is 50-70%). Stage 3 is when the tumor size is greater than 5 cm. or fixed to the pectoral muscle (5 yr. survival is 20-30%). Stage 4 can be any size with lymph node involvement and metastasis (5 yr. survival is less than 10%).

The conventional treatment strategies for breast cancer includes lumpectomy (removal of the tumor), modified mastectomy (removal of the breast while sparing the pectoral muscle) and neoadjuvant therapy (involves radiation treatment prior to surgery in order to shrink the tumor making it more resectable). Malignant lymph nodes are removed during these surgeries. As the number of lymph node involvement increases survival decreases. Adjuvant therapy (hormonal and chemotherapy) is given after surgery to kill micrometastasis in order to improve survival. Examples of hormonal therapy include tamoxifen (blocks estrogen receptor sites so that estrogen cannot bind to the site and cause excessive growth) and fulvestrant (given once a month intramuscularly) acts by the same mechanism as tamoxifen. Other hormonal regulatory drugs are anastrozol, exemestane, and letrozole. They block the enzyme aromatase in the fat cells that convert androgens (produced in the adrenal gland) to estrogen. The treatment strategy is to switch from one drug to another because they are effective for only a limited amount of time.

Women who have estrogen receptor breast cancer will benefit from drugs that block these receptors. When there is no response from hormonal therapy, polychemotherapy is the treatment modality that is used. Doxorubicin (cardiotoxic) and Paclitaxil are examples of chemotherapeutic drugs but because of their side effects (bone marrow suppression) they are given with Filgraftin (G-CSF) to support the bone marrow. Trastuzumab (side effect is heart failure) is a monoclonal antibody directed against HER2 receptors to reduce the over expression of these receptors.

Bilateral mastectomy is a prophylactic therapy (treatment prior to the development of breast cancer) that is an option being offered to women with the BRAC1& 2 genes. Palliative therapy (is given only for symptom improvement not for cure) is usually given at stage 4.

Although the precise etiology of breast cancer is not known, research has linked breast cancer with excessive estrogen, diabetes, hypothyroidism, constipation, heavy metal toxicity and depression. The thyroid hormone is the permissive hormone that determines how other cells function at the DNA level. Weight gain is a sign of hypothyroidism. The body will hold on to fat when toxin (i.e. DDT, PCB, mercury, aluminum, and lead) level gets high. Fat cells have the enzyme aromatase that converts androgen into estrogen. Consequently, estrogen causes proliferation of mutated DNA that result in tumor growth. Mercury is another culprit found in the nucleus of all cancer cells.

Cancer cell have 4 times more the number of insulin receptors than normal cells. Obesity leads to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance leads to excessive insulin production. Insulin is a growth factor that promotes cell division in malignant cells. Lower levels of insulin will inhibit the enzyme (delta-5-desaturase) that produces arachidonic acid. Consummation of right dose of pharmaceutical-graded fish oil will increase the levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a beneficial fatty acid that inhibits the same enzyme (delta-5-desaturase). Arachidonic acid produces hydroxylated fatty acids that allow malignant cells to metastasize from the primary site. Apoptosis (programmed cell death) is a defense mechanism by which malignant cell is destroyed.

Hypothyroidism and excessive estrogen can cause constipation. Constipation has been linked to breast cancer. Constipation means that harmful bacteria, yeast, and parasites are producing carcinogens, gases and toxins in the gut. These carcinogens have the potential to induce mutations in breast tissue especially when the immune system is suppressed (during depression). There are phytonutrients (antioxidants, chlorophyll, and plant enzymes) that work at the DNA level to allow the body’s anti-cancer mechanism to function efficiently. Substances such as coenzyme Q-10, lycopene, and alpha lipoic acid can be used to reduce the side effects of radiation treatment and chemotherapy. Herbs such as parsley and cilantro can be used to rid the body of heavy metals toxicity. Essential oils such as frankincense, lavender, and clove can be used to inhibit tumor growth.

Organisms such as Chlamydia, Microbacteria tuberculosis, and Herpes are usually present in malignant tissues at a sub clinical level. Rishi and shiitake mushrooms extracts can be used to enhance Natural Killer cell activity. Astralagus can be used to enhance the immune system. As we aged our enzyme levels, DHEA levels and growth hormones
level decrease, cell replication malfunction and our ability to cope with stress deteriorates, this makes us more susceptible to cancer.

Oscar Winner Has Jamaican Connection

By: Janice Dayle

oscartop.jpgTorill Kove, Montreal filmmaker who last night won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, "The Danish Poet," has a Jamaican connection. It is National Film Board of Canada Publicist, Pat Dillon-Moore, who not only navigated the film maker's way around the Los Angeles based ceremony, she also pushed that winning film - since it was produced by The National Film Board Of Canada.

Sista P, as Dillon-Moore is more popularly known by Montrealers who listen to her weekly radio programme on CKUT, had been more difficult to locate than usual and getting a hold of her for a chat about the much anticipated Academy Awards had been challenging over the past few months. Then a week before the Oscars, I caught a rare glimpse of her dashing into one of Sherbrooke Street's more trendy fashion spots toting oodles of bagels in shopping bags.

Upon poking my head into the boutique I see, she is out of breath, with more bags than hands to hold them and says in one long sentence, "Yu see de time I picking up my dress though...de bagels are for Canadian ex-pats in Los Angeles...oh mercy is 2 o'clock an I plan to leave my house at 4...where is the dress my dear..."

Needless to say, I held off on the 20 Oscar questions, asking instead if I could contact her for any possible updates and for the status of National Film Board nominees. Dillon-Moore spoke with YardFlex on the Saturday before the big night.

Of course luncheon at the Canadian Consulate with all of Canada's film luminaries was one memorable related event to which the NFB group were invited on Thursday past. However, it was at the Animation World Network reception that Dillon-Moore's Jamaican roots became topic for conversation.

While talking with one of The Academy's movers and shakers Dillon-Moore's Jamaican accent triggered his telling pleasant tales of many trips to Jamaica. The Academy administrator was in love with the island, but mentioned folk not wanting to take him to Kingston out of fear. As a true ambassador of Jamaica, Dillon-Moore, who is actually a second generation Canadian Jamaican, made a promise to ensure the member of The Academy, a tour that he would never forget on his next Jamaican voyage. She said it would encompass trips to our many museums, theatres, restaurants, historical and otherwise scenic spots in Kingston and its surroundings. "I feel the intense need to dispel misconceptions about Jamaica and Kingston in particular," Dillon-Moore said.

The veteran fine artist, has herself earned starring roles in National Film Board movies in the past. Dillon-Moore was the first Afro-Canadian to become a Station Manager for radio in Montreal and her enormous talents as a Comedian are endearingly embraced by all who attend Montreal's annual comedic events.

YardFlex congratulates Pat Dillon-Moore along with the filmmaker, since behind every successful finished piece of art is an amazing publicist.

Chevelle Franklyn - 'I can't do this anymore...

Chevelle-Franklyn-gospel-jamaica.jpgChevelle Franklyn is without doubt one of the most outstanding Ministers of Music to have arrived on the gospel music scene over the past seven years. Her energy as a performer, insight as a songwriter/producer, vocal capacity as a singer, and her anointing as a worshiper has ensured her success as a leading, international, multiple award-winning Psalmist. Chevelle recorded her first work 'Here I Am' at the tender age of 14. Nurtured by some of the top names among Jamaica's music producers, Chevelle soon marked out a distinctive territory in Jamaica's dancehall culture scene.

Her future took a rosy turn and she recorded smash hits Nice and Naughty followed by No Pushover in 1992. But despite the great success, there remained a gaping hole in her soul. In 1998, during a concert, Chevelle, tired of the empty way of life and hopelessness, suddenly declared on stage a change of direction in her career and lifestyle, she decided to become a Christian. As a symbol of her signature to this new change, she sang Kirk Franklin's song 'Silver and Gold' on stage. She said: 'I did not hear a message or anything, but I felt the calling of God.

I just broke down on the stage and said, 'I can't do this anymore... I knew there was something better out there'. It was then that Chevelle gave her life to the Lord ending all her secular contractual agreements, walking away from her biggest international hit song Dancehall Queen'. Better certainly did come and since that change, Chevelle has been combining her new expression with the energetic lyrical style that had made her a great success. This success includes
the hit collaboration in the year 2000 with Papa San on his award-winning album, 'Victory', led to a Marlin Award for her vocal appearance on the track 'Touch from you'.

Her first gospel album 'Joy' stirred up an international storm when it was released in 2001, and led to a tour around the world. 'Joy', led to 12 nominations in the Sixth Annual Caribbean Gospel Music Marlin Awards, in 2002. Chevelle walked away with awards in five categories: Outstanding New Artist of the Year, Adapted Recording of the Year, for 'Firm Foundation' Female Reggae Recording of the Year, for 'Magnify His Name' Contemporary Female Vocal Performance of the Year, for 'Joy' and Album of the Year, also for Joy. Chevelle fellowships at Swallowfield Chapels - Pastor David Henry, when in Jamaica and when in the UK her Spiritual covering is Bishop John Francis of Ruach Ministries, London also church of her spiritual mother Pastor Enid Stewart.

Chevelle has seen God use the ministry to empower and equipped her for Music Ministry. Chevelle produced her New gospel album, called HIS WAY on her very own Label called N.O.W Records (No Other Way). This album has followed in the footsteps of Joy's runaway success. Chevelle Franklyn has shared the stage with the following Ministers Donnie Mc Clurkin, Kirk Franklin, Kurt Carr, Javen, Stephen Hurd, Michael W. Smith and Many more....

"Me have fame before Vybz Kartel have Name" - Roach

By: Kaylia Williams

Kartel shots Roach's new "Purge' riddim with two songs!!

roache-kartel-manager-sexygirls-sexy-girl-dancehall-bounty-killer.jpg'Purge' has cause and will cause many dancehall fans, to think the longstanding friendship which Kartel and Roach shared has mended. But YardFlex.com got the scoop when we spoke with Roach himself Kartel's ex-manager. He told YardFlex.com in an exclusive interview yesterday that although the friendship between them has been cut off, Vybz Kartel voiced two songs for him - 'My Gun protect mine', and 'Betta Can Cook' on his latest riddim that is expected to be release anytime soon.

Still fans maybe he shock as to how Vybz Kartel voiced two songs for his ex-manager and as we all know they were both throwing heated words at each other during interviews that was conducted by ER and CVM, but nonetheless Roach explains, "one day mi a drive, an mi phone a ring suh mi just answer it, while mi riddim was playing, an when me tek a stack a Kartel dat pon di line - him seh what a gwaan an ting an me seh me deh yah ehh nuh, an him seh weh you a deal wid and mi seh, a one new riddim mi a deal with, and he kartel replied seh, a it that, it sound good, bring it come give mi," Roach said.

Anyway I sent it to him the Wednesday and him shot it the Thursday, di same day that he went to do the interview pon ER and den him send back a cd wid two songs on it."

No Friendship - Only Business

YardFlex asked if their friendship has mended as a result of the two songs, Roach continues, "mi neva like what him say pon ER about mi, suh mi guh shot back an interview inna di paper, mi an him don't even ave a disagreement, mi not even know what mi an him have, an him know that. Certain things that him seh, him shouldn't a say it. An mi feel frig up about what he say, fi a yute that I did so much things for". "The same day him go do the interview a ER is the same day him voice the two tune dem an yet still when Anthony Miller asked him bout the friendship him say him a give mi 15 minutes of fame, cause everbody deserve 15 minutes of fame, and that was my 15 minutes of fame. But mi want him fi know seh Roach have fame before Kartel have name'.

The name of the riddim is called 'Purge', which Roach explains, "I wanted to 'purge' out a lot of things that has been happening in the dancehall fraternity, the badmind and name calling. This is the riddim that come fi Purge dem out." He also adds that the riddim has made Vybz Kartel saying things he wouldn't have said, here are inserts from the songs.

'My Gun protect mine', don't cross di line,
please don't tempt mi fi blast di nine,
four an five an six man a dead a daytime tru crime,
mi nuh wa dead before 2099.

Then in another line Kartel says, "fi mi gun nuffi kill Rodney, David or Don Gargon".

The second song is a little mix-up for the ladies.
'Gal Yuh Betta Can Cook',
"nuh bake nuh curry goat,
nuh fry nuh calaloo,
nuh steam nuh cow foot;
Gal u Betta can Cook!"

The final question Yardflex asked was, throughout all this, did Kartel do these two songs to mend the longstanding friendship, or was Roach's riddim 'Purge' too good a riddim to pass up? Roach adds, "No, well, me know Kartel suh mi ago tell yuh bout him, mi see nuff man put out bad riddim and give him and him nuh voice pon dem, but a di 'Guiltiness' about him because him know what he did, him shouldn't have done it and me know him feel it to him heart".

Black History Month Rolls Out The Greatest of Africa and the African Diaspora

marcus garvey.jpgAlthough it is the shortest and coldest month, February has taken on a vibrant holiday type spirit as folk in North America and Jamaica get excited about the highly anticipated Black History Month celebrations. The greatest thing about Black History Month is the opportunity to become enlightened by the wealth of knowledge now easily accessible, as opposed to the not too distant past, when Black stories were muffled and seemingly deemed irrelevant. Africa has been called the mother of mankind, so the history of those from the African Diaspora is understandably huge.

Jamaica's own Marcus Mosiah Garvey (1887-1940), one of the most widely known advocates for the rights of Black people, once said - Mankind must know their history in order to chart their destiny. On February 7, 1926 the first Negro History Week was founded by American historian, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson (1875 - 1950) and it was later expanded in 1976, to become Black History Month. In the United Kingdom, Black History Month is celebrated in October each year.

It is a very long journey back in time, and as we sift through a legacy of slavery, suffering, trials and triumphs, precious segments of Africa's and the Black Man's past emerge like newly discovered jewels. This priceless information takes us back to the times of Imhotep (2667 B.C. - 2648 B.C.), who was a poet, an architect and physician-priest. He is best known as the chief architect of the step pyramid at Saqqara - the world’s first known monumental stone building.

Another example, is the uncovering of stories found in the Kebar Nagast, or the Glory of Kings, where facts about Makeda, the Queen of Sheba (c. 960 B.C.) also come to light. This beautiful love story about King Solomon of biblical times and his infatuation with Ethiopia's Queen, Makeda, was embedded in this chronicle of the rulers of Ethiopia called Kebar Nagast.

Accounts about great kings like Abraha Al-Ars*ham (d. A.D. 569), an emperor of Ethiopia, whose adoption of Christianity is said to have altered the face of the world, come to the forefront during Black History Month, as does the history of Jamaica's Maroons and their leader, Cudjoe, who around 1730, valiantly rebelled and for 140 years defied white slave owners, finally forcing them to seek a treaty of peace.

There is the untold story of Canadian slavery in 1734 with its poignant tale of Marie-Joseph Angelique who was hung after setting fire to her slave owner's home in Montreal to avoid being sold and to run away. Then of course there was emancipation and its implications for Black slaves all over the western world – and post slavery days, when the dominant society's opinion that Blacks constitute second class citizens became prevalent.

The struggle to obtain basic rights and freedom in a world that claimed equality for all ensued and folk like Marcus Garvey (1887-1940), who founded the United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) emerged as forerunners to great freedom fighters like Dr Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968).

Black History Month gives the world a chance to learn vast amounts of information, historically ignored in mainstream educational systems. It also facilitates the showcasing of international, national and regional achievements of Blacks in our modern world. Check out the Black History Month activities in your area today.

Big rehearsals for CWC Ceremony

cricket.jpgPreparation for the Opening Ceremony for the Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2007 is at an advanced stage according to Event Manager Martin Lewis.

The first rehearsal will be held on Saturday, March 10 at 2 p.m. and this will be followed by another at 5:15 --- which is the precise time at which the Opening Ceremony will commence. A final rehearsal will be held at 6:00 o'clock in the morning of March 11.

Already two mass rehearsal have been held. Lewis stated "we had 700 performers last Sunday. Then, on February 24, the full complement of more than 2,000 persons will participate. It is important for us to do these rehearsals at the venue, as the performers and crew must be acclimatised to the field, the stage and the grandeur of it all."
Lewis said that the Opening Ceremony will be the greatest challenge for the integration of functional areas during the two-month tournament.

The Ceremony will be televised life and according to Lewis "everyone involved will have to tune in to what needs to be done. This is particularly important as Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium in Jamaica, where the event takes place on March 11, will be the scene of the West Indies' warm-up fixture against India just 48 hours before on March 9."

He further added that "it will be a challenge but we will have to work around the warm-up schedule. As soon as that match (on March 9) is over, a technical team of 300 persons will work from Friday night, non-stop on the installation, right through to the Opening Ceremony. This will be the largest stage and sound set-up in the Caribbean.

Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington, who chairs Jamaica's Local Security Committee, noted that the spectacle, which will run three hours exactly, will require a high level of security, especially given the logistics of transporting a large number of performers and technical crew to and from Kingston.

Additionally, he said, there are other key matters: safety and security at the stadium (both for people and assets; traffic separation (vehicular and pedestrian) and control as well as the integration of safety and security with other functional areas.

Ellington acknowledged the Opening Ceremony will be a major test for the security forces but is confident that all involved have been well prepared to handle this event.

The Voice of Reggae Industry Leaders

By: Janice Dayle

Tony_Rebel-i-wayne-ken-boothe-iley-dread-reggae-sexygirls.jpg

Leading Reggae Music industry players gave the following opinions on "DJ Lyrical Mayhem," that they say - threatens to upstage the culture, the rhythm and irie mood of Reggae.

Tony Rebel

Not everything that is popular is right and not everything right is popular, so we say to people who claim to be preachers, teachers, motivators and inspirers - your examples will not be ignored so be careful. On the other hand…instead of fighting the bad - go ahead and promote what is good…no-one who promotes darkness wins. The only way to win is to create a light and shine in it.

YardFlex: Do you consider celebrity DJs as role models?

Tony Rebel: Whether you want to be one or not - the people see you as a role model, so understand that the field brings responsibility…and realise that someone will be emulating you regardless of what you do…so if that is the kind of seed you want to sow then sow on.

I Wayne

I want to teach youth the nature way of life, so they will live natural. That would be the first step in showing them life's path. Even though the natural way is a bit slow, I am sure it is right.

YardFlex: What is your opinion on the recent lyrical contention amongst popular DJs.

I Wayne: They are just seeking attention.

Ken Boothe

In every generation there are singers and players of instruments. I hope that this music called Jamaican music will always be here with us….my hope is for it to live on from generation to generation and that they don't mess it up.

YardFlex: Give me your take on DJ verbal wrangling nowadays.

Ken Boothe: I fight the concept of what's happening...if it no up to date for children, me no want fe hear it.

Iley Dread

As singers, we should make good use of the opportunity to engage the keen ears of especially - the youth dem - giving the right messages. We need to educate people as well as to entertain them.

YardFlex: Some top DJs have made headlines with warring words, what do you think about this

Iley Dread: I think it is disgraceful and I hope and pray that the entertainers can wake up and realise it is damaging and nothing good will come out of it...

A moment with gospel artiste Stitchie

Stitchie-gospel-papa-san.jpgHow do you know if the Spirit is Real?

I've always heard the story of the little boy who asked the same question. His mother asked if he could feel, or touch his tooth ache
. The boy replied by saying no, yet it hurts and I know it's there. The mother concluded that the spirit is similar, you can't see it but you know it's there.

Power of Love

God's grace teaches us how to live righteously - (Titus 2:11-12)

"For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should
live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.

God's Grace

God's grace is the most perfect example of love, unselfishness, and compassion. Never has there been anyone more perfectly justified
in delivering... well...justice. And, we are equal dissevering of that justice. And the justice that we deserve is death. Yet, God
offers us life. He offers us life eternal in Heaven. So, if you are looking for someone to model your life after, it's Jesus.

He
offered his very life so that you and I would not receive our just punishment. Instead, he was punish in our place. That's why people say, "What would
Jesus do? - Studying his life gives us insight into how we should live.

Blackrose explains her love for Dancehall

Blackrose333.jpgBlackrose is an East African artist who is widely in love with Jamaica. I love Jamaica because of the reggae music, people, talents and dancing. I had been growing up watching much of VHC1, MTV there I discover some of my favourite artists like Janet Jackson, Kylie Minogue, Neneh Cherry, Mc Hammer and more. By age of 8 I was exposed into reggae music. My bigger brother Anil Mohamed owned several reggae records and his favourite was Bob Marley. I loved the music of Bob Marley too we use to listen to his tracks often. As the years went by I got to know Maxi Priest, Patra, Shaba Ranks and Diana King. That was when I was 12 years I started to learn me dancing Dancehall/ Reggae Muffin as it was called those days. Then right then I started composing my own songs.

I was singing to my friends and family for fun. While at school in Uganda I won a singing contest by singing Patra's song "Worker Man". The artist who held the contest was known by name of Shanks Vividee and I was to attend to any of his show by mentioning Patra`s name. It was just one simple call I made at one radio station one day in Tanzania. I was to send shout out to my friends and the Dj asked me to hang on he will talk to me after he set the song I request on air. Anxiously I waited and there he was on phone again John Delinga. He though I had a sweet voice and he was wondering if I could sing. I admitted yes I could and it is one of my dreams. Right there and then I was invited to open the concert for different artists from Tanzania. I cried loud said "I have songs but no instrumental". He assured me that would not be a problem at all can be fixed by using other artist beats that goes with my song.

The day came and i went to club Bilicanas in Dar-es - Salaam. I made a performance that night and people came to me after asking me whose song was that I performed. I told them it was mine. They were very pleased and asked me to pursue my music career further. I didn't know how to continue. One day I met the assistant manager of Clouds Fm and asked me to join into the music project. I went there with my music book with almost 80 songs by age of 16. We selected "Sijui Niseme" and the song was recorded with Mj Production and released year 2000. Lucky enough I was people loved the song and encourage me to do more songs. I went to record other songs with Don Bosco studio unfortunately somebody I gave all money to pay for my recording stole it. Then I got stuck right then. I had to work hard to collect some cash and my sister Cleopatra contributed big time into my album. Then I got a chance to record with Bongo records I made about 7 songs with them. But I didn't release the material. I was not only focused into music though I did several shows and covers on magazines like Femina. I had to study and that was in another country in Uganda. Later on I moved to Norway and continue studying Fashion Design until today. Fashion is my passion just like music.

In Norway I entered singing competition Idol unfortunately I didn't go further throughout the competition. Then there I met a man called Pal Gazchmann contributing his business card for his recording studio. Trondheim studio that is the one am working with today. I work with great producer known as Conor Patric, Idd Aziz the drummer from Kenya, Sonny the guitarist and more. Now at the age of 25 then I realize everything for sure has it own time to be done. I feel so much stronger now and matured to do my music the way i want. I have made songs in Swahili and English. Into my album which will be released in late June will have Reggae, Dancehall and pop all available in Swahili and English. You just going to love the songs into this album.

Internet is people's best friend. I had it much easier to advertise my music through different websites. I came across myspace and there I met so much wonderful people. Not mentioning Jamaican friends. I then got lucky to feature with Konshens from Jamaica in one of my songs Sugar into Melting Sugar. Konshens he is so talented and am so glad to work with him. I hope someday it will be with Buju Banton or Cecile. I traveled to I still continue working with my album to make it with the Baddest sound. All I want to do is make people dance and connect. I traveled to East Africa for Christmas holiday and did some promotion in Zanzibar and Tanzania. At myspace website is worldwide thing and am so glad for having internet today makes it somehow easier to artists. Keep spreading them roots of Blackrose with love and support. One of my hugest dreams is to perform in Jamaica and dance reggae and dancehall all night long.

Jermaine Dupri to Run New Division at Island Def Jam Music Division

By: Janice Dayle
YardFlex
Chief Overseas Editor

Jermaine-Dupri-hip-hop-sexygirls.jpgJermaine Dupri was appointed President of Island Records Urban Music last week..

Commonly billed as a top number one hit maker and rightly so, Dupri has churned out a series of winning sounds over 15 years since his first number 1 on Billboard's Hot 100, "Jump" with Kris Kross in 1992. His consistent success as a producer and songwriter thrust the 2005 Grammy Award Winner, for Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together," to the top of this new division at the Island Def Jam Music Group. Antonio "L.A." Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group (IDJ), announced the appointment which requires Dupri to oversee Island’s entire urban music operation in addition to producing artists on the IDJ roster and providing his expert production services to the entire Universal Music Group family of labels.

Dupri will be based in Atlanta and New York as he takes on this newly created position and will report directly to L.A. Reid as well as to Steve Bartels, President, Island Records/COO, IDJ Music Group, on operational matters. "I'm so excited to be reunited with L.A. Reid because most of my biggest hits were when he and I worked together," said Dupri. "And then to be working side by side with Steve Bartels -- I don't think there's a better team because he's by far the best in the game. I can't wait for us to start stuntin' on y'all."

Undoubtedly one of Urban Music's paramount figures today, Dupri has been an integral player in the production of numerous hit records. His 5 time platinum success with the teen duo, Kris Kross led to the founding of So So Def label in 1993 and recognition for Dupri as one of the foremost young entrepreneurs driving hip-hops creative and commercial force in mainstream music. Many gold, platinum and multi-platinum artists like, Xscape, Da Brat, Jagged Edge, Lil'Bow Wow and J-Kwon were signed and nurtured by Dupri's So So Def label that became known as an engine for not only hit records, but also artist development.

"Jermaine's career has grown from strength to strength over the years," said L.A. Reid, "as a producer and songwriter and recording artist in his own right, as a respected label executive and entrepreneur, and as a highly esteemed developer of new talent. His deep ties to Atlanta's creative R&B and hip-hop community have been the springboard to working with the greatest names in contemporary music."

Dupri has an illustrious legacy that includes a long distance run of hits with Usher that began in 1997 culminating with the 8 times platinum "Confessions" album and collaborations with IDJ artists Jay-Z, Ludacris and Lionel Ritchie. He has turned out hits with Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, TLC, Toni Braxton, Run-DMC, Alicia Keyes, Chingy, Janet Jackson, Aaliyah, Monica, Ciara and many more.

Buju Banton gracescover of Ragga Magazine - France

buju-banton-ragga-magazine-dancehall-reggae-sexygirls.jpgGargamel Music is happy to announce that our CEO and marque artist, dancehall-reggae icon Buju Banton graces the cover of this month's Ragga magazine (#82), based out of France. The engaging eight-page feature story "Revenge of the Rudeboy" was written by senior contributor David Commeillas, who reasons with Banton about the recent passing of his uncle, the late, great Joseph "Culture" Hill, the development of his Gargamel Music record label, and of course, the new album Too Bad, which has been received tremendously well in the territory.

Too Bad really is too bad and "Driver A" is one of the best songs ever," says Gilbert Pytel, Editor in Chief of Ragga. All the French massive love this tune." He adds, "Buju is the only DJ who can sing on a one drop and ride a bogle riddim with the same cleverness...he's an old school artist who can easily compete with the new generation. The eternal artist!"

Nuh Friend From Dem' and 'Teck Whey Yuhself' videos a bomb!

mr.vegas-dancehall-reggae-sexygirls-sexy-girls-bounty-killer-d'angel.jpgVegas' two singles 'Nuh Friend From Dem' and Teck 'Whey Yuhself' are tearing up the dancehall scene right now. The catchy beat and infectiousness of the songs seem to lull listeners and have them caught up in the addictive groove.

The lately released videos for these songs are something else. Director J Will shows creativity, ingenuousness and it wasn't hard to see the raw talent shining through.

In 'Nuh Friend From Dem' the director moves away from the traditional skinny girls gyrating away and instead creates an intriguing Vegas decked out in his outlaw outfit taking that slow deliberate walk to face off with his rival in a classic western duel to the death! Very original. Kudos to the directing team on this one.

'Teck Whey Yuhself' moves away from all that drama and captures every nuance of the dancehall as the Ravers Clavers Dancers danced up a storm in this one.

There is no ignoring the lure of this catchy song and the dancers keeps you on your toes.

Both singles and videos have found its mark
– it's gonna be a sell off!

Tribute To Dennis Brown: ever reigning Crown Prince of reggae

DennisBrown-reggae-bob-marley.jpgOne of Dennis Brown's former schoolmates once recounted a time in their childhood when Dennis would perform for children in the yard of his elementary school. His lyrics were reportedly witty and sometimes naughty, gaining big laughs and cheers from the wide-eyed and innocent audience who would show their appreciation by offering Dennis certain amounts of money if he would sing their requests. Dennis was setting the stage for a lifetime of wooing crowds with the wonderful voice that earned him the title Crown Prince of Reggae.
***

Excerpts from interview done: 22 Oct 1980 in L. A.

DENNIS BROWN: I used to work with a band called the Falcons...At the time, we used to have a girl called Cynthia Richards, and you had Noel Brown, and there was another brother called Scotty who was a DJ at the time [on "Draw Your Brakes"]...We used to all be in the Falcons.

I was born [1 Feb 1957] in Kingston right at the corner of Orange Street and North Street. You have a big tenement yard, that was where I grew up, really...Slim Smith and the Techniques used to come in my yard and rehearse...I didn't record as the Falcons. You see, each of us recorded separately. Like Noel Brown and Scotty, they recorded as the Chosen Few, and I recorded as Dennis Brown then...Well, the first record was a song called "Love Grows" which wasn't released until after the second record I did for Coxson, which was "No Man Is An Island"...It was the second song made, but the first to release. And since then we just kept making records and doing backup harmonies on various songs.

Like we worked with Alton Ellis, Larry Marshall, we did harmony and songs with Alton Ellis like "Sunday Coming" and "Your Heart Will Pay."
ROGER STEFFENS: What was it like to record in the Coxson Studios in the early days? You were very young when you first went in. Were you really nervous, or did you have a lot of confidence?

DB: I had a lot of confidence for the main reason that I was established as a "boy wonder" then, at that time, and like I used to have a lot of people who loved to hear me sing, like the engineer and meself and the musicians would get on well. Not only with the musicians, but with other artists like Ken Boothe and Delroy Wilson, and all the others, like groove! You know, we had that groove; I didn't feel no way. You just went right in and just recorded songs and listened them, and if there were any mistakes, then we would correct them and just went on...one take or two take.

Usually, first I would run down the song then I would just take one take, and after that I wouldn't need another one. I wasn't thinking of competing with any artists as such, I was more thinking of being among them, and sharing thoughts with them; like sharing views, ideas, etc. I wasn't like competing with Tom, Dick or Harry. To be with them was so much that - you find that most artists who come in the business and try to complete against other artists never last long because they exalt themselves too much; because when one thinks that their feet are getting too big for their shoes, you find that 90% of the people don't really dig that artist because he's trying to hang his hat where he can't reach it. It's like belittling others.

RS: How did you get mixed up with Byron Lee? Did he discover you?

DB: Actually, I was working with Byron for around a year or two, and Ken Lazarus was like the musical director of the band at that time...It wasn't until 1968 that I played with Byron, around the first time Johnny Nash came to Jamaica. Like when Miriam Makeba and Adam Wade were there, they played in Arena, and I sang with Byron and the band, coming onto Christmas time and thing. Every year West Kingston used to have some charity balls at the Arena.

RS: Did anybody make money out of music in those days, except the producers?

DB: Only the producers.
LARRY MACDONALD: Or someone who walked with his machete to collect his portion.
KEN LAZARUS: You know I can't name you an artist that wasn't exploited.

Reggae Boy King breaks his silence

By: Melton Williams

Marlon-King-sexygirls-sexy-girl.jpgOut of favour England-based Reggae Boy Marlon King broke his silence over the alleged report that he had women in his hotel room and other issues during the two-match England tour in May and June of last year.

King spoke for the first time about the wide-spread report after he was slapped with a two-year ban a few days ago by the disciplinary committee of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) into misconduct charges during the England tour.

The Reggae Boy was not present at the hearing citing that he had work
commitments for his Premiership club Watford. However, he defended his
position not to make himself available for the crucial hearing in Jamaica.

He said: "The situation was blown out. It should not have reached this
stage. It should not have gone public. It should have been dealt with in house.

"At the last conversation I had with the president (Crenston Boxhill), he said he was going to phone me. He said the delegation was going to come to a decision whether they would let me play in the England game. The next things I heard was the story on SkySport news that I was excluded from the squad. "Going to Jamaica to explain my situation wasn't feasible at the time because as I said the whole situation was blown out of proportion. I just wanted it to be over and done with .... I thought I had already been punished.

"Then statements were made about females in my hotel room when I had my fiancee. The president talked about girls in the hotel. All the players have girls in the hotel up to four oclock in the morning and nobody said anything."

King, who was very upset about the decision to ban him, said he was being used as a scapegoat for Jamaica's poor showing on the tour of England.

"At the end of the day I just think that the president was vexed because of several issues that I had spoken of. I came out and I speak the truth. I talked about the facilities ... I talked about leaving half an hour before game and getting into a match some 20 minutes before kick off when the hotel is 10 minutes around the corner.

"I talked about few towels for 24 players. I talked about having a meeting at 2 o'clock in the night when we have training the next day. I stated the facts. I was been make a skapegoat and it is obvious. I have been keeping quiet all these time."

On June 1, the JFF expelled King for disciplinary reasons prior to the
team's historic match against England on June 3, which the Reggae Boyz lost 6-0 at Old Trafford.

Team-mates Jason Euell and Jamal Campbell-Ryce received lighter punishments and were fined half their match fees after the JFF management and technical staff heard appeals by the three players.
The JFF team had earlier expelled the three, who broke a team curfew.

King further stated that "all this negativity is bringing down the Jamaica name. You don't ban players for two years just like that. I I never did anything wrong."

King said that he was disappointed on how the JFF had handled the issue.

He said: "A two year ban to say it was harsh would be an understatement. Not even people who take drugs or other serious cases .... are not banned for two years and to say that you had a disagreement with the president and got a two-year ban is very disappointed.

"I selected Jamaica over Republic of Ireland .. but when thing like this happens it kind of put element of doubts in your head.

"I don't think that my situation was the main reason why things happened. I wasn't part of the team that lost 5-0 to Australia, I wasn't part of the team that lost 6-0 to England. We got the players, we have the players to do well, but you have to ask yourself why aren't these players coming forward to represent Jamaica."

King further said that he was surprised about the hearing considering that the federation had already punished him.

"Did Jamaica want me to play for the Country? The original punishment was for a curfew and that was never in place. It was stated that they were going to deduct money for curfew that was set at 11:o'clock at night. We have already left by 9 or 10 o'clock," said King.

Asked if he will appeal the JFF's decision, King stated that "I will sit and speak to my agent and we will take it from there."

Love Is Gonna Keep Us Together

chrisinti-reggae-sexygirls-sexy-girl.jpgThere is a lot that I could say about Chrisinti, but most of you already know how soulful his voice is (that rootsy, bluesy thing he does), great live performer, etc., ...none of it would be unexpected or inaccurate. Still, before I was co-owner of a record label, I was a music lover. So, music fan to music fan, LOVE IS GONNA KEEP US TOGETHER is a record that I lovingly share with you.

From the moment I heard Chris singing the hook in the studio and saw YahBreeze laying the track I felt something about this song. Even though it's a love song, it's also a message that is true for everyone. No matter the crisis, no matter the drama, no matter the messed up things we say to each other sometimes (because we feel messed up and misery loves company) - the reason we keep coming back around to hope is that we were born with an innate desire to connect with someone or something on a universal level. Music does that at it's highest vibration. Underneath that jaded expression, I think you feel me (Jah know we ain't in it for the money).

The single has been gaining spins on the American Blues Network and is in medium rotation on 20 other urban format stations across the Southern United States.

Reggae artiste Taurus Riley 'Firing Musical Shots'

Tarrus-riley-reggae-dancehall-bob-marley-sexygirls-sexy-girl.jpg

'The man who thinks he's larger than life' the title of the Taurian's first album formerly introduced Omar Riley a.k.a Taurus Riley into the music industry in 2001. The name Taurus Riley originated from him being ruled under the sign Taurus and the style he first came on the scene with, his friends said he fired musical shots with the fast pace that he would deejay, both were combined hence the name Taurus Riley.

The new musical sensation got hands on experience from his dad Jimmy Riley who is a veteran in the music fraternity, he shared, that life was always in the studio and traveling with his dad and so he was exposed to the music and to other veterans which he looks up to such as Beres Hammond and instrumentalist Dean Frazer.

At age ten he started fooling around with different instruments and just created a vibe vocally; his mother was his motivator as she insisted on him to pursue his talent, his father was also adamant but mainly his mother.

What you see is what you get from the musical sniper as his career did not take off as he would wanted but some how he says he fired a musical bullet which connected in April of 2006, he describes the feeling to be overwhelming as he didn't expect such a great response to his music, he shares that he tries to make his music to empower people and to uplift. His hit single 'Stay with You' which brought him on the scene was doomed to be a chart topper, for him, he said he visited his heart for another hit because 'Stay with you' was not an original, however his old track 'Larger than life' from his first album was reintroduced and the love is overwhelming. 'BeWare' is another track that is conscious and is well received across the airwaves both locally and internationally.

The introduction to his 15 track album 'Parables' produced under Dean Frazer Canon Production was launched in the heat of his career, on October 21st of 2006, fans were introduced to the musical shooter as they saw how well he used words emphatically. He explains that "Parables the name of the album had to be used because of the versatility and creativity he displayed, parables is also a track on the album he states that the nursery rhymes, we grew up on has meaning behind them, therefore I saw the need to play with the nursery rhymes a little to educate the youths of some of these things we face each day. For example the three blind mice... Are the big guys that put price on the rice". In other tracks he speaks on humanitarian topics such as bleaching, the lack of jobs and racism still being exercised in our societies. From talks with VP Records the distributors of the album, it is well received both here and abroad. Taurus expresses the love and respect he has been receiving from is fans, throughout all, his recognition and achievements he maintains his goal in music which is not to preach to people but to uplift youths and to increase peace and love in societies.

Akon and Geffen Records Present Brick & Lace!

Brick & Lace is the first official act signed to Akon's Konvict/Geffen imprint. The group is releasing their debut album in May featuring production from Akon, Tony Kelly, Raphael Saadiq, and Will.I.Am.

brick-&-lace-dancehall-akon-bounty-killer.jpgPart urban singers and part urbane songstresses, sibling duo Brick & Lace are genre-busters who staunchly defy the 30-second pitch. The amalgamated sound that makes up their 180/Geffen debut, Love Is Wicked, is unique, though also at once very familiar.

Born to a Jamaican father and an American mother and raised predominantly in Kingston, Jamaica, on an opulent musical diet of reggae, R&B, hip hop, pop and country, 26-year-old Nyanda and 24-year-old Nailah Thorbourne couldn't help but be trans-eclectic. "We are a hybrid," affirms Nailah in her effortlessly sexy West-Indian lilt. "It's not fabricated at all; it's who we are."

Indeed, who they are is evident in their moniker: "Our mother came up with the name 'Lace' and we immediately liked it," explains the incisively passionate Nyanda. "But we still felt that there was an edge missing, so I came up with 'Brick.' It has stuck with us ever since and has evolved with us."

To the ladies of Brick & Lace, their name represents the duality and complexity of the every woman. "Sometimes you want to wear a cap and sneakers and look grimy," Nyanda tells. "And sometimes you want to wear your sexy dress and heels and look cute." Nailah puts it all in perspective: "People always ask: 'Who is Brick & Lace?' And we always tell them it depends on the day!"

This unpredictability and uncompromising expressiveness makes Love Is Wicked (which features the production prowess of Akon, Raphael Saadiq, Will.I.Am, among others) an aural delight. On their agile down-bottom introductory single "Never," over Akon's seething sonic brew, Brick & Lace caution wayward suitors to behave themselves if they want a chance with the sisters. "The track's so grimy that the lyrics and the arrangement just came to us," Nailah recalls enthusiastically. "It was a very collaborative effort that was fun and exciting to record all the way."

R. Kelly hospitalized, and will miss court date in his Child Pornography case

By: CJ
Staff Writer

R-Kelly-hip-hop.jpgAfter partying the night away last weekend at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel where P. Diddy left his own party abruptly to avoid being in the same room with R. Kelly the singer reportedly developed appendicitis. According to his lawyer, R. Kelly was operated on.

The R & B singer/producer remains in good condition, but the hospitalization will force him to miss a Wednesday court date in his child pornography case.

In 2002, Kelly, 40, was charged with 14 counts of child pornography, after he was seen on a videotape having sex with a minor girl.

According to Asst. Cook County State's Attorney Shauna Boliker, Kelly was in Miami to perform at a Super Bowl party. He was scheduled to appear before Criminal Court Judge Vincent Gaughan for a status hearing. Under a previous ruling by Judge Gaughan, Kelly is legally allowed to travel out-of-state.

Under the current circumstances, the Prosecutors were notified and the status hearing will be rescheduled.

Tribute To The Honorable Robert Nesta Marley

bob-marley-reggae.jpgOn February 6 each year, celebrations and tributes ring out around the world in memory of the Honourable Robert Nesta Marley, born on this day in 1945. Succumbing to a menacing cancer at the age of 36, he was prematurely taken from us on May 11, 1981. Lauded with several accolades that include Order of Merit in Jamaica, Bob Marley was crowned The King of Reggae Music by a fan base that spans the four corners of the earth.

The powerful force guiding young Bob Marley from very humble beginnings in Nine Miles St Ann and Trench Town's inner city, through to his being not only a colossal artistic success, but also a steadfast proponent of social justice and human rights is relentless, and lives on in the long legacy of compelling tracks left for the world to reflect on and enjoy. In a 1979 European interview Marley noted he was driven to speak out against weapons, wars, the corrupted or programmed, like those who create actual or virtual weapons to overthrow others. "Scientists still studying and not listening to what I am saying, but if they are not creating things for good, but creating weapons to overthrow people, they will get overthrown with it too," Marley opined. He went on to say the needy shall not be forgotten and the expectations of the righteous shall not perish.

Embracing Rastafari spiritual philosophy, Bob Marley brought its teachings to the world mainly through his music. "I don't have any religion, Rasta is life - I am what I am…I am a Rastaman," Bob once declared to an interviewer. With messages of peace, love and truth being the main components of his pulsating sound, doors to success opened globally for Bob, whose first major impact on the Jamaica music scene in 1964 was as a member of, The Wailers - comprised of, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston.

Burning a trail for Jamaican music with the revolutionary sounds of their first singles, "Simmer Down," "Soul Rebel" and "400 Years," as well as with debut albums in the early 70's, "Burnin" and "Catch A Fire," The Wailers commanded attention, and have retained that stance from the day they came on the scene until today - amidst many changes.

After a brief alliance with Lee "Scratch" Perry and around 1969 Alan "Skill" Cole, one of Jamaica's all time favourite star football players returned to Jamaica from his global football stints and regrouped with his friend Bob Marley. "What had been a cordial friendship since meeting at a football game in my early teens, grew into a close connection, that could only have been described as a binding relationship...we were closer than brothers...we were one blood," Skill explained. They formed Tuff Gong Records and from there releases kept coming, Skill said - and then Island Records came along. Being a strong support behind the stage front scenes was a pleasure for Skill, whose invaluable input was greatly appreciated by Bob.

It may have been the commonality of their love for football coupled with dedication to each other and similar values and principles that caused Skill and Bob to mesh so well, but their friendship grew only to become cemented in Bob’s last days. Skill, who stuck with Bob - physically and as a super source of emotional support, particularly during his final days on earth, recounted Bob's brave battle with a killer disease called, Melanoma or skin cancer.

"It started in 1970 while Bob played football in Boys Town. He got a rough tackle that left him needing rest for two weeks," Skill recounted. Flaring up again in 1977, the injury was diagnosed as the deadly Melanoma - one of the most aggressive skin cancers. Skill spoke of the treatments and side effects that initially involved removing Bob's toenail and placing him on a strict diet. In describing the shocking manifestation of Bob's illness on stage, Skill said, "When he collapsed in Central Park, he fell into my hands...from there I was with him every step of the way on his road to what I hoped would have been recovery."

Chemotherapy, that seemed to be more hurtful than helpful ensued and Skill described Bob's trip to Germany as one built on the hope of new and more natural treatments that had emerged. Making the trip with his brother, Skill spoke of the dismay that overcame not only him, but everyone around Bob, when his hair fell out. Facing the inevitable was like harsh defeat, leaving solace only in the prolific legacy of music amassed by Bob and The Wailers.

Skill lost a brother, Cedella Booker, Bob's mother, a son and Rita Marley, Bob's baby mothers and his children lost their soulmate and father on that fated day in 1981. However, like the song, "Natural Mystic," whether on February 6 or not, the undeniable truth in Bob's messages serve to somehow continually inspire our world, that is in dire need of an influx of peace, love and harmony.

Bob's numerous awards are listed below:

• 1976: Band of the Year (Rolling Stone)
• June 1978: Awarded the Peace Medal of the Third World from the United Nations
• February 1981: Awarded Jamaica's third highest honor, the Jamaican Order of Merit
• March 1994: Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
• 1999: Album of the Century for Exodus (Time Magazine)
• February 2001: A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
• February 2001: Awarded Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award
• 2004: Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him #11 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time..
• 2005: Posthumous Achievement Award
• "One Love" named song of the millennium by The BBC
• Voted as one of the greatest lyricists of all time by a BBC poll.

St. Ann Smiles on Son of Soil

reggae-bob-marley-bounty-killer-junior-gong-ky-mani.jpg

The lush, verdant, and blessed parish of St Ann will be staging perhaps one of Jamaica's most authentic Reggae shows - Smile Jamaica - on Saturday, February 10.

The concert will pay homage to the most pioneering Reggae act in the world-Robert Nesta Marley - and will feature quite appropriately, his promising sons in concert with a host of other competent and conscious acts. The show will cap off Bob Marley Week, which runs from Sunday, February 4 to Sunday, February 11.

The concert is billed as the most 'rootsy' Reggae show for the year, with live bands, and a commanding set of performers slated to work and are destined to thrill. Heading this list are the Marley brothers Damian, Stephen, Julian and Ky-mani, who have trod their own musical path and who have proved themselves worthy of the Reggae accolades they've been receiving. It's just as symbolic as it is special, as this will be the first time they have ever shared the same stage in Jamaica.

bob-marley-reggae.jpgBrothers Damian, Julian and Kimani all have released albums to their credit as solo performers. Stephen made a name for himself as a musical Marley based on his creative production skills, earning accolades on five Grammy winning albums. But, on Tuesday, March 20, Stephen can lay claim to the title of solo recording artiste with the release of his first album, Mind Control. His Saturday, February 10 performance will mark his first local performance as a solo artiste boosted by the success of the lead single, Traffic Jam featuring younger brother Damian.

Other acts booked to perform are living legend Bunny Wailer, son of the late Peter Tosh, Andrew Tosh, Cocoa Tea, Bounty Killa, Perfect, Chezidek, Little Hero, Assassin, Spragga Benz and young sensation, Etana. This unique blend of seasoned and new performers is sure to transform Nine Miles into a musical den filled with niceties.

This is not the first "Smile Jamaica" concert, held in Jamaica. In December 1976, the legend himself, Bob Marley, headlined the show at the National Heroes Park in Kingston. Despite being attacked the night before, he bravely and defiantly stepped out and said he would only do one song, but ended up working the stage for ninety minutes. Persons described the atmosphere of that show as "buoyant and positive", so the Ghetto Youths Camp aims to re-capture that mood and that feel in the cool hills of Nine Miles this year.

The significance of the location of the concert should not be missed. A popular tourist destination, Nine Miles is the birthplace of the musical legend. For $700, Jamaicans will be able to share in the special moments offered by the Smile Jamaica concert on Saturday, February 10.

Dancehall artiste Aidonia ejected from the Alliance

Inserts from TVJ's Entertainment Report

Artiste of the year Aidonia - clears the air about bottle throwing at spectrum

aidonia_dancehall_reggae_busy_signal_sexygirls_sexy-girl.jpgKirk Roberts, Aidonia's manager, has denied that the deejay was bottled off the stage at Spectrum at UWI, Mona.

"Rumours..." he said of the statements. "The single bottle was thrown towards Icon direction, and Idonia point to his people, and say nobody nuh move, dem fi memba when other artistes were onstage, they were bottled as well, ah just politics why dem say is Idonia and Sunshine alone. Him do him whole set, him even do the song 'Bushkash' and then him exit, as Idonia finish work, we mek one big motion from backstage, parking lot, car, and drive gone, people ah tell lie say a Skatta fling bottle, that is not true, Skatta never do that, a just lie...we hear it was planned by persons who we will not name."

He said there were persons with a vested interest in seeing Aidonia's career fall by the wayside.

"Dem say that by this year, it (the bottle-flinging) must done Idonia career, a certain selector say that. One thing me a tell them, if dem can duplicate self and turn into one million fans, because Aidonia fan base is big, that is why the people vote him as artiste of the year," he said.

In the meantime, promotional plans for Aidonia's work is on the way.

"We have some mix CDs going out, last one was on Ebay, sell like hot bread, we doan have any idea for a name for it...we just build it offa tings wha happen, the new mix CD will come out by end of February, just one more track left and it will be complete," he said.

Aidonia has a number of shows lined up for the month of February.

"Most of the shows are Aidonia in concert, most of the time, him go foreign, work by himself and the venues are sold out. Now we have two in Miami, one in New York, one in Orlando, a show in St. Maarten," Mr. Roberts said.

Aidonia had a successful show in January where he shared the stage with Jim Jones.

"The show with Jim Jones was mad, Aidonia performed after Jim Jones, Jones was walking out but when he heard Aidonia do a song about every single member of the Dipset, him stop and turn back. Foreigners like lyrics, when people go show fi hold ends inna Jamaica, dem go fi listen performance, Americans like metaphors, Idonia have that locked. Only one artiste have it like Idonia, and is Kartel, there is no other one in dancehall who have the metaphors locked like them," Roberts said.

In closing, Mr. Roberts had a parting shot for those people who were trying to stop Aidonia from performing the song, December Deadline by throwing bottles whenever he performs it.

"Tell the artiste dem fi stop pay people fi bottle other artiste onstage. Ah that happen. Anywhere Adonia go and do that song, dem say him ah go get bottle but we nah stop do the song," he said defiantly.

P Diddy buys bling for kids?

By: Heather

p_diddy_kim_porter_daughters.jpgP Diddy has revealed he's already bought his six-week old daughters their first piece of bling.

Diddy's long term girlfriend Kim Porter gave birth to the twin girls Jessie James and D'Lila Star on 21 December and Diddy, real name Sean Combs, told People recently that he is very much the doting dad.

He said: "I bought them their first pair of diamond earrings. Tiny Tiffany diamonds for babies."

Diddy, who runs the fashion label Sean John, hopes such gifts will pass on his interest in style: "If they're not into fashion, that's cool. But I think they will be."

He added that even at six weeks, the girls are easy to tell apart because Jessie is "always smiling" and D'Lila is "loud and fiery". The girls are named after Sean and Kim's grandmothers respectively.

Hot off the press! - Tony Matterhorn - Visa again

By: Anthony Turner

Tony_Matterhorn_dancehall_dutty_wine_visa.jpgAlmost 2 weeks ago, sound system selector/ dj Tony Matterhorn, who was barred for almost three years from traveling to the USA, secured his travel documents and work permit to enter the USA. Matterhorn garnered worldwide notoriety last year when his controversial hit song "Dutty Wine" shot to the top of the charts and became number around the world. The song was the rave in dancehalls across Europe, Jamaica, the Caribbean, the USA and Canada. Ms. J. Lexy Brooks, CEO of VIP Connected Entertainment - the agency that handles management, bookings and promotions for the DJ was very instrumental in helping the DJ regain his travel/working privileges to the USA. In a recent interview, done at her office in NY, Brooks candidly answered questions about the DJ's future and outlined plans which her company has to celebrate his long awaited return to USA.

Q1: Now that Tony has his travel documents, what does this means for him?

A1: First let me say how really excited I am that Tony now can travel and work in the USA again. I know it was a very, very long wait but fans stateside will soon be graced with his presence and the opportunity to see their favorite selector turn DJ perform live. I know the United States; specifically New York is one of Tony's favorite places. I am certain that it’s somewhere he is anxiously looking forward to returning to.

Q2: How difficult was it to secure his visa?

A2: It was quite a long and at times tedious task to secure his visa. At times it seemed almost impossible but we kept the faith. My company, VIP Connected Entertainment first started working with his immigration case a little over 3 years ago. Although the hopes of him getting his Visa looked bleak, we really believe that there was no legal reason to keep him from coming and working in the U.S.A. So we kept working on it, believing that one day he would once again return to the U.S.A. After all, there are thousands of adoring fans who are anxiously waiting to see and enjoy his live performances. We brought the Attorney's Office of Spar and Bernstein on board to assist us. They worked hard and for this we would like to thank them for their kind assistance. We would also like to thank the Office of Congressman Gary L. Ackerman and the Jamaican Consulate for the role they played as well. But just to be clear --- at the end of the day the reality of what Tony has been preaching all this time came to pass and that is he has done nothing wrong and he stuck to his argument.

lexy head shot.jpgQ3: What plans do you have in place to celebrate his return to the USA?

A3: We are currently working with MARS 2112, a trendy hot spot in Times Square, NY to host a welcome back party for him. They are excited and we are as well to host this historic event there. It is ironic that we choose this venue to host the party given that one of Tony's biggest songs is called "Man from Mars" and the name of the venue is Mars 2112. We plan to really go all out to make this a special event. A lot of his friends in the dancehall fraternity, also many in the R&B and Hip Hop community have already indicated they plan to attend the event. We are also planning a private VIP/Press Reception for him. For this event we have started to reach out to media entities across the US, Europe and from Jamaica.

Q4: What plans do you have for him regarding a US tour?

A4: In terms of touring, his return has been quite anticipated by fans all across the U.S. Remember that even before he became a mega superstar with hits like "Dutty Whine," "Goodas Fi Dem" and "Man from Mars," he made a name for himself as one of the top selectors in the business. Now that he has established himself as a talented DJ, he is the most demanded artist out of Jamaica today. And he will definitely be on the road touring those states where fans have long awaited his return.

Q5: When was the last time he performed in the USA?

A5: Tony's last performance in the U.S. was October 2003. It is hard to imagine that almost three years have gone by but what is important is that Tony is back and ready to make a lasting impression on fans.

Q6: What parting words do you have?

A6: I am certain that there are a few persons that Tony would like to thank for continuing to believe in him and for their words of encouragement over the years. But I will leave that for him to do himself. My company VIP Connected Entertainment would however like to thank those government agencies and persons who were instrumental in helping to make his return a reality even when some thought that it would not happen. I would also like to thank the fans and friends who continue to believe in him and never gave up hope that he would one day return to the USA. Thanks again.

The Human Papilloma Virus - Twenty million people in the USA infected

By: Dr. S Lawson

dave.jpgThe Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD). HPV is at epidemic proportions in the united States. There is an 80% life time risk of acquiring this infection. Twenty million people in the United States alone are infected with HPV but are unaware of it. Cervical cancer is the 2nd most common cause of cancer world wide. HPV affects primarily the cervix, but the penis, anus, and the mouth can be infected.

Predisposing risk factors include smoking, oral contraceptive pills, pregnancy (low immunity), inadequate nutrition, early age of sexual activity, multiple sexual partners, weakened immune system (HIV positive, chemotherapy) and other STDs i.e. Chlamydia. Transmission requires skin to skin contact. Some strains of HPV predispose women to develop cervical cancer and some strains have predisposing factors for warts. HPV-DNA test is available to detect the presence of HPV infection in women. The Pap (Papanicolaou) test is a screening test that will identify precancerous cells of the cervix so that further diagnostic and therapeutic work up can be implemented to prevent the development of cervical cancer. Gardasil is a vaccine, approved by the FDA, for young girls and young women age 9-26 that provides substantial protection against the most common strains of HPV.

Vertical transmission (mother to child) is a serious but rare mode of infection in HPV infected women. Condoms significantly decrease the transmission of HPV, but transmission may still occur where the exposed skin comes in contact (i.e. shaft of the penis and the vaginal wall and the scrotum and the perineum). HPV has been identified as an etiology of oral cancers. Anal intercourse increases the risk HPV induced dysplasia (potential precancerous cells), especially in women with cervical dysplasia. Cigarette smoking is the most serious risk factor that causes cervical dysplastic cell to become malignant. HPV is so common in HIV positive women, that it is listed as an "AID's defined illness". Chlamydia is an intracellular parasite, a common asymptomatic infection, that make the cervical epithelium more prone to mutation of certain protective mechanisms. When HPV enters a human cell, it takes control of the cell's replicating mechanism and causes cell to grow uncontrollably, giving rise to warts.

DNA testing shows that approximately 90% of all cervical cancers test positive for HPA-strain-16,18 and 45. HPA-6 and 11 cause 90% of genital warts. The Pap test is an effective way to detect precancerous cells. Current guidelines recommend women have their first Pap test about 3 years after they begin to have sexual intercourse, but no later than age 21.

If a woman gets an abnormal Pap test result, a colposcope (light microscope) is used to magnify the view of the vagina and cervix. Endocervical curettage (scraping of cells in the endocervical canal) or biopsy can be used as definitive test for malignancy. If precancerous or malignant cells are found, curative techniques are used to destroy the malignant cells. The LEEP technique involves the use of a thin, low voltage wire loop that cuts out abnormal tissue. Cryotherapy freezes and destroys abnormal tissues. Laser therapy uses a narrow beam of light to destroy abnormal cells and Conization removes a cone-shaped piece of tissue using a knife, a laser, or the LEEP technique. About 60% of cervical cancers are discovered in the early stage where cancer cells have invaded the cervix, but it has not spread anywhere else. If the cancer is not controlled it can cause cervical bleeding that would require radiation (intravaginal). Radiation is usually successful in controlling the bleeding and growth of the tumor, but scaring of the vaginal wall and premature menopause are usual a result. The Gardasil vaccine provides protection against the most common strains of HPA-16,18, 6, and11. The vaccine does not protect against the less common strains, so regular Pap tests will be needed to detect the presence of precancerous cells to allow for proper treatment. One draw back with the vaccine is that it may actually increase the risk of developing cervical cancer in women already exposed to the virus. The vaccine is less beneficial in females with more lifetime sexual partners.

Anything that compromises the immune system will predispose an individual to HPV infection. Obesity causes an estrogen dominant state which leads to excessive cell replication. Excessive fat is an indication of excessive toxins (heavy metals and pesticides, herbicides, toxins of cigarette). Substances like coffee, alcohol, sugar, and boiled tap water deplete the body of nutrients that support the enzymes that make our immune system function effectively. Foods that can boost the immune system and stimulate immune modulating activity at the genetic level are broccoli (indole-3-carbinol), Shatakii, reshi and matakii mushroom boost the NK (natural killer cell) activity which destroys cancerous cells. Foods high in antioxidants (antioxidants stabilize and protect DNA from mutation, thus ensuring adequate circulation and cell replication) i.e. green tea, black sesame seeds, brazil nuts, walnuts, cherry tomatoes, wild salmon, sardine, herring, pomegranate juice, mangoes, essential oil. All these therapeutic modalities are most effective when there is optimal cardiovascular function.

One on one with Da'ville - "Sex is a wonderful thing"

By: Shilo Evans

da'ville_daville_reggae_dancehall_sexygirls_sex.jpgShilo
Greetings Da'Ville, it's been a few years since we talked. How are you?

Da'Ville
I'm doing fine at the moment, thanks.

Shilo
Well, well, well...you've been doing big things recently. How does it feel?

Da'Ville
Well every thing feels good right now. I can't complain at all.

Shilo
Your single 'On My Mind' a mad all a di woman dem...the video I see is on your MySpace page. The single is also the lead on VP's 'Strictly The Best' compilation.
How has the response been?

Da'Ville
The response has been tremendous, people finally feeling the vibes and showing appreciation for my music, so everything is looking good.

Shilo
I see you've been busy performing all over the world. How has the career pace been?

Da'Ville
It's been hectic, but at the same time manageable. I mean, after all, this is what the career is all about...me being able to go and represent for the people wherever and whenever they request my presence.

Shilo
You are loved by the women and respected by the men as one of the most humble entertainers out there. How do you stay so grounded?

Da'Ville
Well! I just put God first and let everything else fall into place.

Shilo
That body of yours Da'Ville...do you have a permit for it?

Da'Ville
Lol, no I don't, you think I need one?

Shilo
Hell yeah...but moving right along!!!
I always seem to interview you close to Valentine's Day.
Do you have anything special planned for this Valentine's Day with that special person in your life?

Da'Ville
Well, this Valentine's Day will catch me traveling to a few places to perform, so as you can see it will be a busy period for me.
In the midst of that I will try and do something special for that special someone.

Shilo
Since we listen to your music to get our so-called groove on...who do you listen to?

Da'Ville
Who do I listen to? I listen to a variety, it varies. I might listen to R-Kelly, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross and many others. Mostly people from the old school.

Shilo
Can we expect an album from you soon?

Da'Ville
Well yes. Sometime in early March 2007, but I can't reveal the exact date.

Shilo
Have you considered being in any other part of the industry besides being the artist?

Da'Ville
It's funny but a lot of people do not know that I do a lot on the production side as well.
I've done some producing, along with my partner J. Brown for artists like Luciano, Junior Kelly, Anthony B, Queen Ifrica and many more.
As you can see, I'm already involved in other aspects of the business. I hope to one day find a new talent that me and my partner can work with and bring to the center stage eventually.

Shilo
Who do you listen to most right now? What genre?

Da'Ville
I listen to all of them, it doesn't matter what genre it is. As long as it sounds good to me, I will listen to it, that's just me.

Shilo
How do you feel about all this feud among the dancehall artists?

Da'Ville
First of all, I cannot tell a man what to do and how to live his life. Speaking generally, I think all that negativity will show the result of itself one day, and I believe that it will not and cannot be good for our music in the long run. We need to be paying attention to the important and positive aspects of the business and put the negative squabbles aside. Plain and simple as that.

Shilo
What are you most passionate about? [Besides music]

Da'Ville
God, life, love, family, my girl and children.

Shilo
There are many festivals and annual shows across the globe each year...is there a particular show you have never been on that you would want to be on?

Da'Ville
I have a few requests on the table right now that hopefully I will be able to accept.
I'm just doing the work, but nothing happens before the time. I'm just working hard and then seeing what the future brings.

Shilo
Are you still in Philadelphia?

Da'Ville
Not as much as I used to be. I'm home in Jamaica most of the time. I still go there to visit family and friends every now and then, but Jamaica is where it's at right now.

Shilo
Are you still with 'Hard Rock Entertainment'?

Da'Ville
NO.

Shilo
Are you still channeling your anger with sex?

Da'Ville
WHAT? Who told you this? Well, what is an argument without some great make-up sex after with your special lady? (lol)
I have a woman who helps me with that energy. Sex is a wonderful thing isn't it? I think so.

Shilo
But Da'Ville...yu nuh easy. You really forgetful...well...let me refresh you and my reader's memory as to when you told me that little diddy.
Back to business...what else can we look forward to from you for 2007?

Da'Ville
Well you can look forward to the new album coming out in March 2007, the title of it is "On My Mind".
I must say thanks to J. Brown of Fashozy Records, Lloyd Stanbury, Steven McGregor, Lady Dawn and every one who helped to make this possible.

Shilo
Oh yeah...I forgot to ask...how and where did you spend the holidays?

Da'Ville
It's funny you should ask, but I was actually very busy doing shows in Jamaica and the Caribbean islands.
It was a lot of hard work, but you done know this is what we do so we just get it done.

Shilo
Will you give me a shout when next you are in New York?
After all Da'Ville...you are missing from this page right here.

Da'Ville
I will definitely link you dem time deh zeen...much respect.

There you have it...Da'Ville is an exceptional artist. Go out and support him.
Bun bootlegg 'roun here!
