Snoop Dogg Arrested - Heathrow Airport

SnoopDawg.jpgThere were media reports recently that rapper Snoop Dogg had been arrested after a disturbance at Heathrow airport. The US star was detained by police when a row broke out after his 30-strong entourage was refused entry to the British Airways first-class lounge at the airport's Terminal 1.

His party was then alleged to have moved to a duty-free shop where it was said they threw bottles of whisky to the floor and argued with staff. Police were called to the airport and were escorting the group away from the scene when a further disturbance broke out, Scotland Yard said.

Seven officers received minor injuries - mainly cuts and bruises - and one suffered a fracture to the hand. The superstar rapper grew up on the gang-infested streets of Long Beach, California and ended up on the wrong side of the law.

In 1993 he was tried and acquitted for murder - the same year he found fame with debut album Doggystyle. Since then he has become a movie star, appearing in the Starsky and Hutch remake, and has even been invited to speak at the Oxford Union.

D'Angel to Perform While Pregnant

Melissa Chambers
YardFlex Writer

D'Angel-YardFlexPregnant.jpgDancehall celebrity D'Angel issued a release to the media this week saying that she will continue to perform on stage shows publicly for the next few months, after getting the go-ahead from her paediatrician.

"After three months, everything is sealed, the doctors said that I should take it easy as with any woman having her first child, but that I can continue to work. Anyway, mi nah run no marathon onstage, I just need to control mi movements, so there is no danger to the baby," she told YardFlex.Com on Saturday.

She performed at Richie Pooh's 13th anniversary show in Miami, Florida last week where Beenie Man and Sizzla were the headline acts. And she intends to perform alongside Beenie Man at stage shows over this weekend.

"I have shows leading straight up through the Summer, both local and overseas, my pregnancy is a life inside of me makes me but it makes me twice as strong...in fact, mi badder onstage, Beenie say me even a work better, I am growing, it's just natural," she said.

The child, which will be D'Angel's first and Beenie Man's seventh, may be due some time in October. D'Angel intends to buck a trend which has often hobbled the careers of female deejays once they get pregnant in Jamaica where they are sometimes unfairly discriminated against by male producers and promoters.

A few weeks ago, she had told a YardFlex reporter that she had intended to take a break after her pregnancy reached an advanced stage.

"After my baby, I will be right back, I am not taking an extended break (after the baby's birth). Right now, I am recording my album, I already did my collaborations for 'Undisputed', and I have a couple of videos to do soon, and in the meantime, I'll still be recording songs in the studio, just no shows for now," she was quoted as saying.

Chuck Fender's 'Gash Dem & Light Dem' Banned

ChuckFenda-YardFlex.jpgZIP FM and IRIE FM have banned Chuck Fender's uptempo hit, 'Gash Dem' on recommendations made by the Broadcasting Commission. According to electronic mass media regulations in Jamaica, the commission itself does not ban any specific recordings or programmes, but they can make recommendations, and it appears that both IRIE and ZIP concur with their assessment of the song.

It is unclear whether other stations will follow suit.

The lyrics mirror the love of Jamaican artistes for the 'incendiary' with calls to 'burn' out negative elements that plague the society.

Gash dem and light dem
For the negative vibes weh dem a bring
Gash dem and lite dem
Mi come fi mash up and wreck up
Dem senseless killing
Gash dem and lite dem
Boy haffi reverse wid dem bag a gun ting
Gash dem and lite dem
Stand guard and come outa di wages of sin."
(Gash Dem an Light Dem, Chuck Fender).

What do you think? Is this song 'bannable'? Or should the BC mind its own BC bizness?

Beenie Man & Ms Ting Team Up With Sno Cone For New Single

MsTing&BeenieMan.jpgVirgin Records artiste Beenie Man has teamed up with hot dancehall producer, Rohan 'Sno Cone' Fuller, for a track called 'Horny', which, given the early buzz on it, could be included on his upcoming album, 'Undisputed' which is due out July 18th.

"Yea, man. Virgin said that they need him on the album, I've worked with Sno Cone many times before, he is great at what he does," Beenie Man told YardFlex.Com.

'Jah Sno Cone' produced Sean Paul's #1 single, 'Temperature' which has helped to push sales of the 'Trinity' LP which has been certified platinum by the RIAA.

The song, 'Horny', is a track on Sno Cone's new 'Cheerful' riddim, and also features vocals by Ms. Ting.

"The song is called 'Horny', and it wicked, anno true ah my own, me a say so. Ms. Ting sings the chorus, and Beenie comes in with his deejay part saying , 'yu hot so, how yu so hot so...', ah murder!" Sno Cone said today.

Beenie Man, a Grammy winner and deejay of the year many times in Jamaica, has managed to remain on top of his game. He recently entered the R&B/Hip Hop Singles chart with his Tony Kelly-produced hit song, 'Hmm Hmm' which hit the #67 spot last week, after debuting the previous week at #80. Three years ago, he teamed up with Ms. Ting to score the monster Summer chart hit, 'Dude' which peaked at #16 on the Hot R & B/Hip Hop singles charts. Beenie Man's 2004 album, "Back to Basics" (Shocking Vibes/Virgin), debuted at No. 51 on The Billboard 200.

Mr. Peppa Way - 'Gangsta Guerilla' - Video Shoot

By: PaPa & RaZZi

GangsterPeppaVideo-YardFlex.jpg
Mr. Peppa shot the music video for his slamming new single, 'Gangsta Guerilla' last weekend. The shoot took place over two days in the Corporate Area, and featured scenes from shot at such locations as the juice factory in Allman Town, Kingston, the 'white room' at ADVIDCO, and the Habibi Latino Restaurant in New Kingston.

"The video depicts the 'survival mode' that everyone in this society, whether rich or poor, can relate to, the struggle to survive and function in a very competitive society so this song addresses some critical social issues. The concept for it was Mark's (Pinnock) idea, and I added in some parts. When it makes its debut in two weeks, it's going to be crazy," Mr. Peppa told YardFlex.com.

GangsterPeppaVideo-YardFlexA.jpgThe director of the video is Maci-Don, and the editor is Endless.
"We have some real footage of motorists winding up their car windows at the approach of street youths, we have an 'uptown yute' going through similar struggle, because we really face the same kind of struggles whoever you are," he reasoned.

Are you concerned that 'Gangsta Guerilla' may be regarded as a 'thug anthem' rather than a clever bit of social commentary?

"Not really. The song addresses social issues but from you say, 'Gangsta Guerilla, we no tek chat...', people will interpret that in a more thuggish manner

The single appears on the 'Gully Slime' rhythm, the latest Natural Bridge project, and will be distributed by In the Streetz. Other songs on the rhythm include Matterhorn's 'Goodas Fi Dem, as well as song by WARD 21 and a combination between Mr. Lex and Vegas. The video is expected to premiere on local cable and TV stations within the next two weeks.

You can see Mr. Peppa live at a show this Saturday at Weekenz on Constant Spring Road, St. Andrew.

One on One With Singer/Songwriter Ne-Yo

neyo_YardFlex.jpgAFTER SUFFERING a major disappointment when he first tried to make an album, singer-songwriter Ne-Yo decided to drop the 'singer' off his resume and just focus on being a songwriter. And he was so successful, writing the smash Let Me Love You for Mario last year, that for a while he was prepared to live out his artistic dreams out of the spotlight.

But executives at Def Jam Records had other ideas once they got to listen to some of Ne-Yo's music. He was signed to a record deal and the result, his album In My Own Words, arrived last month. It debuted at the top of the charts, thanks in part to the sizzling success of the album's No. 1 single, So Sick.

The 23-year-old recently sat down with The Associated Press and discussed what it's been like to focus once again on the singer part of his resume.

AP: Did you always want to be a performer?
Ne-Yo: I always wanted to be onstage and all of that stuff. For a minute I went through the stage where I didn't want to do the artiste thing because I had a deal previous to this one with Columbia Records that went sour. It just made me step away from the music business as a whole. I met up with my current manager and my current production company, which is Compound Entertainment and they really reminded me that music is not what I do, it is what I am. I got back into it. I was still kind of shy about the whole artiste thing.

AP: Was it hard seeing other artistes (such as Mario) become well-known by singing the songs you wrote?
Ne-Yo: Not at all. A success for him is a success for me. I wrote the song. It was good. I actually got the chance to meet Mario and have a conversation with the dude. When the song did what it did we became friends. I was happy for him.

AP: Do you consult with the artistes before writing songs?
Ne-Yo: It sometimes depends. It happens both ways. With Mario I met him after I wrote the song so I didn't really get a chance to get in his brain at all. If at all possible it helps to sit down with the artiste and ask them how they would handle situations so I can use words they would actually say, phrases they would actually use. A lot of times when people come to me for a song, I take it they've heard what I do and they've heard my sound. They want my sound so they say, "Do you. Just give us something hot."

AP: Talk about the inspiration behind your single, 'So Sick'.
Ne-Yo: So Sick is a song about the first time I ever fell in love with a girl. I was 17. Love has no age range on it. Love can happen when it happens. When you are young you tend to listen to your friends a little more than you should. I wound up doing stuff I did not have any business doing. I cheated on her. She found out about it and she left. At the time it was devastating because I was really in love with this girl. I could see myself having kids with this girl and settling down and just being us. When it happened, it hit me kind of hard. That is normally where the best songs come from. It's weird. The more you suffer, the better songwriter you are.

AP: How much have you suffered in your 23 years?
Ne-Yo: I like to put it this way: I've lived a life you can write a book on, but I don't write books, I write songs. Instead of making a book, I made an album.

AP: Do you want to go back to being a full-time writer?
Ne-Yo: Not at all. Not at all. If you would have asked me that question three months ago, I would have said maybe. Honestly, the vibe, the high that you get from being onstage and as soon as the song comes on you go crazy, and you put the mic to the crowd and they sing the song back to you. There is no words for what that feels like. I couldn't give that up if I tried.

Da'Ville to Land Second Album 'Can't Get Over You'

Daville_promo_pic_2.jpgSinger Da'Ville will be landing a second album, to be released in the summer titled 'Can't Get Over You'.

The album will feature all brand new original tracks, except for 'Tell Me Again'. The will be released in Japan, July and at a later date in Jamaica.

The former ARP lead singer, who was on tour in Japan early this year, said the contents of the album is self expressive and an album every music lover would like to have in their collection.

Da'Ville has to his credit songs such as 'Gallis', 'This Is The Feeling', 'Banana', 'The One For Me', 'Hey Baby' and 'In Heaven', among several others that have created an impact.

The artiste's versatility with music allows him to create cool lovers lyrics while still competing in the fast-paced world of dancehall.

'Can't Get Over You' makes the ideal gift any man or woman would want to give their special person as the soothing lyrics are meant to knock one off their feet.

Check Out Cobra for Shotta II

CobraShottas.jpgYa heard it here first folks, deejay Mad Cobra has confirmed that he has landed a leading role as a villain in the independent film, Shottas 2, the sequel to the grimy hardcore Jamaican gangster movie that is a cult classic in the ethnic communities in the United States, and in Jamaica.

"I can't reveal too much about the storyline, but basically my role in the movie is that of the lead villain, who upon hearing of the deaths of Wayne (Benz) flies to New York in his private jet and starts a vendetta of sorts against his killers. The villain is like a successful career hit man," he told YardFlex.Com.

"I have no idea when the movie is going to start shooting, but everything has been finalized now, and all that is left is for me to get the script and go to New York and Miami where we will be shooting the film."

This will be Mad Cobra's first feature role in a film, but the deejay says he won't be taking any acting lessons, despite the fact that the other lead actor, Kymani Marley has had major roles in two flicks to date - the 2001 Shottas, and the 2003 BV International's One Love, the script of which was written by veteran Jamaican writer, Trevor Rhone.

"Right now, is just a natural thing, mi know the gangster life," he said confidently.

Sizzla to Step out of Babylon: Leaving Def Jam?

By: Claude Mills

SizzlaKalonji_YardFlex.jpgSizzla Kalonji may be leaving the Island Def Jam Music Group because he is not pleased with the promotion and marketing push of the album he has been working on for the past few months.

"Def Jam dem nah push it out certain way, so I and I ah observe them still, but I plan to withdraw this album...take back my master. Once we see the light and way we can utilize it, we can get the good out of anything, so the work will continue," he told YardFlex.Com.

Sizzla had not been officially signed to Def Jam, but was reportedly shopping for a deal with the big record label after big wigs at the label had expressed interest in his sensational sound.

Are you surprised that the executives, including Def Jam President Jay Z are not showing more interest in your album?

"Mi caan surprise, yu fi jus know say we ah warrior, and once we can get a medium through which we can express ourselves, things like that, that's what we're gonna do, you know what I mean," eh said.

"We exist long time, we enterprise by ourselves long time. We will survive. Once we can unite, and do the works, I am for that, and if you have those who have the authority caan do it, just do your thing, ah money we come fi look," he told YardFlex.

The Island Def Jam Music Group is an umbrella company for labels such as Island Def Jam, Def Jam Recordings, The INC Records, Roadrunner Records, and the Jay-Z run Roc-A-Fella Records among others.

Talks had surfaced last year that Sizzla was on the verge of inking a deal with the giant United States-based recording label, which has under its umbrella artistes such as Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, Redman, DMX, Ludacris.

But the buzz seems to have died down after the early success of his track with Rapper Foxy Brown, 'Come Fly With Me' which became a hit on the 'mix tape' circuit in the United States market.

If you wish to read more about Sizzla - get your copy of the May issue of YardFlex magazine.

YardFlex Magazine is available locally in all Cool Oasis retail gas stations island-wide and other gas stations in the Corporate Area.

It will also be available in Miami, Florida and New York next week.

Scenes From Carnival Sunday

By: Claude Mills

Carnival_YardFlexB.jpg
Carnival Sunday. April 23, 2006. Thousands of revellers stream through the streets around Half-Way Tree in an orgy of colours that dazzle the eye and fire the imagination.

Voluptuous, firm-bodied young women thrill the crowd with impromptu demonstrations of 'sexual outercourse' with only-too-willing men on the burning asphalt. Meanwhile, on the soft shoulders of the major thoroughfares, people stand in open-jawed awe and envy at the licentious goings-on in the streets of Kingston.

Carnival_YardFlexF.jpg"Dem nasty eeh," one woman cried out and flapped her hand in a pantomime of disgust but her eyes never left the spectacle. She didn't even blink. And she was not alone. An estimated 200,000 people watch the road parade every year, and several thousand more sit in their living rooms glued to their TV screens at the wanton display of flesh. And this year was no different.

The massive group of revelers started their trek on Mona Road, and as it snaked its way through the city, it seemed to swell as it passed each street. Not even heavy showers could put a damper on spirits, as a deluge of rain descended at a few minutes before 2 p.m.

A lot of ghetto girls, faces bleached, and wearing figure-hugging tights and b-riders mingled with revelers and converged behind Byron Lee's truck, while Bacchanal Jamaica appeared to be more 'segregated' and organized in their carnival display. This year's theme for Bacchanal Jamaica was The Lost Empires, inspired by the exploits of the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks and other ancient cultures, and the dazzling colours on show were impressive.

Popular personality L.A. Lewis played the role of DJ as he sought to rev up the crowd from his position on the Digicel Truck. Red Rat later joined the vibes on the Red Bull Truck deejaying a few tunes while encouraging the crowd to have fun.

Carnival_YardFlexE.jpg
Outstanding floats included 'Shipwrecked', designed by Garth Sanguinetti for Digicel, CVM's 'Hellshire Delights' and 'Deep Waters' by The Gleaner Co. But despite the excellent floats, it was the revelers' day and they made the most of it.

The high-energy revelers gyrated to dancehall and carnival tunes including Tony Matterhorn's 'Dutty Wine', Destra's 'It's Carnival' and Allison Hinds' 'Roll It Gal' as the annual Sunday march brought an end to 10 weeks of fetes and carnival fun.

Irony of Carnival in Jamaica

By: Claude Mills

Carnival_YardFlexA.jpgHypocrisy most foul is the common denominator of the carnival experience in Jamaica. During the season, people gyrate in mas camps and on the streets (or turn out to fan themselves during the spectacle on the street) but it is these same individuals who nod their heads in agreement in church as the preachers bellow damnation from the pulpit. They 'bun' the bacchanal, but delight in the emotions it excites.

In other West Indian societies, Trinidad, for example, carnival is hailed as an influential factor for social integration and an escape from tension and the negative impact of social prejudices. In Jamaica carnival is cause for excitement as well as blunt criticisms.

"Carnival contributes to the moral decline in Jamaica, it cannot be just entertainment, it has other implications," said sociologist, Blossom White. Although there is no data available at the University of the West Indies (UWI) to determine the effects of carnival on Jamaica or its people, Mrs. White, who has tutored at the UWI for 17 years, is convinced that the celebrations have a negative impact on society.

"Do not believe all that stuff about social integration. Carnival is just for a day and a weekend, after a while we go back to the way it is -- who is to be exploited, is exploited, who is to be oppressed is oppressed. We (shouldn't) fool ourselves, society is stratified (and) carnival doesn't break down social barriers," added Mrs. White who has carried out some research on the matter.

"There is an increase in the fertility rate and STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) in the nine-month period after carnivals are held in other countries. People get carried away and forget their inhibitions, the dancing stimulates erotic sensations, and most likely people will want to let off sexual steam, and that can lead to problems," she said.

Noting that the soca event was imported by prominent people in the society, the sociologist argued that carnival had serious implications on the psyche of the poorer class. "If persons are aspiring to the lifestyles, successes and goals of the upper class, what message is carnival sending to them?" she asked.

However, mea culpas are hard to get from carnival organisers. "Carnival is good, clean fun," said Stamford Cockin, one of the directors of Bacchanal Jamaica. "Ninety-nine per cent of the people are not doing anything vulgar but the media just focussed on that one per cent."

That may be true, but the dancing in the streets continues to ruffle the collars of the preachers in Jamaica. One source of irritation is that the local carnival is held during Lent a time of fasting, prayer and penance. The in-your-faceness of it is offensive to the church, say many in the pulpit.

"Easter is just not the same since carnival has come in to profane the deep religious beliefs of the season," said one preacher who said he did not want his name associated with any story about carnival. "People just want to march, and they take great delight in revelling and wanton behaviour, or just watching it. It is not even about the bun and cheese anymore, carnival is contributing to the moral decay of Jamaica," he said curtly.

In some countries like Trinidad and Tobago, the Lent aspect is strictly followed with the merry-making and revelry stopping at midnight on Shrove Tuesday before the holy holiday of Ash Wednesday.
However, in Jamaica, carnival activities occur during the height of the Easter weekend, between Good Friday and Easter Monday.

Dr. Arthur Green of the Universal African Improvement Association is not impressed, however. He objected to the "idle display of flesh" in an articled penned in one of the major newspapers a few years ago.
"This carnival has been sanctioned by persons of the so-called upper echelons of society and foisted upon us. It is hypocritical because it is the same things the dancehall divas do, but that is looked down upon because they come from different addresses...below Cross Roads," Dr. Green was quoted as saying. He was referring to the dichotomy of life (Uptown vs. Downtown) in Jamaica.

Despite the protests the carnival express steams ahead. The celebration generates millions of dollars as it attracts the attention of several blue-chip Jamaican companies, employs hundreds of people, and woos tourists and Jamaicans living overseas. Despite the groans from the church and frowns from some other areas of society the carnival train chugged along as always with a big climax last week Sunday. And you can expect it to be around for many years to come. Get used to it.

Dancehall Represents Strong on Billboard!

SeanPaulBeenieManBabyCham.jpg

Dancehall is representing big this year on the Billboard charts, as Sean Paul, Beenie Man and Baby Cham are all present and doing well.

Sean Paul has sat atop the Billboard Top 100 Chart with his second single, Temperature, after climbing the chart for 10 weeks. It has now been 15 weeks since Temperature entered the chart, it sits at #2. Temperature has also topped other Billboard charts such as Hot 100 Airplay and Pop 100 Airplay. Temperature is Sean Paul's third #1 as Get Busy and Baby Boy, a duet with Destiny's Child singer Beyonce, were also chart toppers.

Beenie Man is also on the charts. He has entered the R&B/Hip Hop Singles chart with his hit song, Hmm Hmm. It holds the #67 spot this week, after debuting last week at #80. In 2004, Beenie Man's King of the Dancehall peaked at #26 on the same chart!

Baby Cham's Ghetto Story is also doing well. The song has entered the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Singles and is climbing the charts and currently holds #81 spot. In 2004, Baby Cham's Vitamin S peaked at #59 on the same chart!

Damian "Jr Gong" Marley, TOK and Sizzla were also prominently featured on the Billboard charts last year. But this year, Jamaica continues to be a force to be reckoned with, no matter what people say about our beliefs or ethics. When it comes to production, whether it be music or sports, we are on par with the best, so we can stand and reign, as such, among them!

Who Said 'Any Icon Who Kill Another Fi Get Bullet Bullet Bullet'

TwinsOfTwinsYardFlexCarlingtonWilmot.jpgThe 'any icon weh killa next icon' argument got deeper over this weekend when the comedic duo, Twins of Twins, accused selector Richie Feelings of being the one who uttered the inflammatory statement.

"Ah Richie Feelings say that any icon weh kill another icon fi get bullet, anno we," Patrick Gaynor, of the duo, Twins of Twins, told YardFlex.Com.

"We nah put nutten out de that is not out there already, artiste fi be intelligent, look pon Lexxus, him neva have no great problem wid our CD, the argument that we come up wid (one pertaining to oral sex), him never really want it come up again, but it did already out de, ah just comment we ah comment pon it," Patrick Gaynor said.

However, Richie Feelings insists that he never advocated any violence against 'any icons'.

"Why dem ah come try mix me up inna dem passa passa? Mi neva say that. At the dance last year, mi say, 'any man kill a icon, a foundation or a veteran...ah dis me a play fi dem, and mi play Capleton's 'Wicked Man Shall Have to Fall...', and mi have the CD fi prove that! The man dem fi low me outta dem careless argument star," Richie Feelings, a selector of Stone Love Movements, said.

Sexy Singjay Danielle - Eager To Make Her Mark

Carlington Wilmot Photo

daniel-videoshoot_YardFlex.jpgShe is determined, confident and ready to launch big time on the entertainment scene. Danielle knows it's a tough business to break into, but she is confident that her charisma, personality and talent will cut a niche for herself in the dancehall arena.

Currently, "I am focusing on marketing myself right now". She has recently completed a single titled 'Sexual Healing' with Gramps from Morgan's Heritage. The single was released last week and she is expecting big things from it. The song is a remake of Marvin Gaye's hit "with my own interpretation on it," the DJ pointed out.

It is not hard to predict that Danielle will go places as her winsome personality, her childlike grin and her aptitude for music is evident when you talk with her.

Born in Kingston, Danielle enjoys swimming, listening to dancehall, hip hop, R&B, and writing music. She is somewhat free spirited and believes in being happy no matter what her circumstances are. She admits, however, that when the decisions are important, she plans ahead accordingly.

She delights in all types of cuisine, but especially loves Oyster and other seafood. Her taste in fashion goes all the way to Europe, as she adores Italian designers and French perfume.

Her relationship with music dates back a long time. While in high school she hungrily gobbled up dancehall music, listening to the racy rants of Lady Saw, and the boastful lyrical bites of Beenie Man, among other leading artistes. At the same time, however, she kept the sounds of hip hop, and R&B close to her heart. Rapper Lil Kim, Jay-Z, Foxy Brown and Usher are among the names she posted on her listening roster, even up to this day.

She constantly wrote tracks over the years, and even while in the USA studying, she never stopped listening to dancehall music. Ultimately, she could not ignore the call of dancehall for long, and decided to return to Jamaica.

Zekes Hangs Self?

ON EVE OF SENTENCING, WILD RUMOURS CIRCULATE THAT 'ZEKES' HANGED SELF IN CELL

On the eve of his sentencing in the Home Circuit Court on Thursday, a wild rumour raced around the Corporate Area that Matthews Lane don Donald 'Zekes' Phipps had hanged himself in his cell at the Horizon Adult Remand Centre on Spanish Town Road in Kingston.

Phipps, who was convicted of two counts of murder in a sensational trial that ended last week, had reportedly been having a 'torrid incarceration', and there have been numerous reports, some of which have been confirmed by prison officials, that he is being abused by other prisoners, especially other high-profile dons such as himself.

It was this systematic abuse at the hands of other prisoners -- some of whom are reportedly incensed by the allegations that were revealed during the trial that 'Zekes' forced a man to perform a homosexual act on him before he killed him -- that compelled prison officials to transfer him from the Horizon Remand Centre, sparking the rumours that he had hanged himself.

Earlier today (April 19, 2006), dozens of curious people converged on the Kingston Public Hospital hoping to catch a glimpse of 'Zekes' body but left after they found that the rumours were untrue.

"Nuff people converge pon the hospital a few hours ago, but dem left afta dem see nutten nuh go so," a ward assistant told YardFlex.Com last night.

Checks with officials at Horizon confirmed that 'Zekes' had been moved 'for his own protection'.

In the meantime, Phipps, 48, will find out his punishment today (April 20, 2006). Some legal experts theorise that he could face the death penalty, even though he has been convicted of non-capital murder because the law allows a person convicted of two non-capital murders to be punished in like manner as a person convicted of a capital murder.

Presiding judge, Justice Marsh, will hand down the sentence. The sentencing will mark the end of months of speculation about the case involving the well-known personality who was implicated in the murders of Dayton 'Scotchbrite' Williams and Rodney Farquharson. DNA evidence reportedly played a key role in the conviction.

Williams and Farquharson were shot and killed last April and their bodies burnt and dumped in an open lot at Rose Lane in downtown Kingston. Following police investigations, Phipps and Garfield Williams were subsequently charged with the murders. Williams was, however, freed last month after the jury was instructed by Justice Marsh to find him not guilty.

Phipps' defence team was headed by K Churchill Neita QC, and included Lloyd McFarlane, Neita-Robertson and George Soutar. Paula Llewellyn, the senior deputy director of public prosecution, marshalled the prosecution's case against Phipps.

Two ATIs This Year - Negril

BestOfSpringBreakATI.jpgThe resort town of Negril will see two sets of party celebrations between the end of July and the Independence weekend. Why you might ask. Apparently, there has been a row between Appleton and Absolute Entertainment, and hence both entities will be promoting separate events over the two week period.

David Walton, brand manager for Appleton told the press that Absolute's reps "saw the Independence weekend to be more accommodating to their schedule, as the Monday (Independence Day) was a holiday. The Monday prior to Emancipation Day[Tuesday August 1] is a regular work day and this has inconvenienced a number of our loyal Appleton supporters.

"Our goal is to build brand equity, and hence we will respond in ways which please our loyal supporters and party fans in an effort to offer a safe, and exciting weekend for all who wish to attend," Walton was quoted as saying.

Appleton's promotion is being billed as Appleton Treasure Island. It will feature ten events from August 4-7.

The Absolute event, dubbed Absolute Temptation Isle, runs from July 28 to August 1. In an interesting twist, the ATI name has been registered and Appleton no longer has the right to promote their event using the name. Insiders believe that a major brouhaha is brewing between the two because the regular ATI patrons might be fooled into believing that the Appleton-promoted ATI weekend is being backed by Absolute. But this is not so.

Appleton has defended its decision to continue using the ATI name, opting to call its event, Appleton Treasure Island, which will feature ten parties over a four day period. Parties will be held at Risky Business, Tamboo, Margueritaville, Ricks Cafe and WAVZ.

Meanwhile, the Absolute Temptation Isle weekend will feature events such as Stages, Wild side, Jokers Wild Colours, DNA Extatiq, Right Image Daydreams, the Temptation Live concert, Tempted (Delano from Renaissance Disco's birthday bash), First Fridays, the BET After Party and Soul Food Celebrity Party. Bikini Shorts, Fusion Party and the newly added High Society party, will also fall under the weekend series of events being promoted by Absolute's reps.

The Rise of Bob Marley - 'Before The Legend'

BobMarleyYardFlex.jpgTWENTY-FIVE years after his death, a new biography on reggae legend Bob Marley will be released. The book, Before The Legend: The Rise of Bob Marley, was written by Jamaica-born journalist, Christopher John Farley. It will be launched May 1 in the United States by publishers Amistad/Harper Collins.

Farley, an editor with The Wall Street Journal, was born in Kingston, but raised in the U.S. Before The Legend is his fifth book; Kingston By Starlight, My Favourite War, Aaliyah: More Than a Woman and Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues (co-author) are his previous efforts.

For Before The Legend, Farley says he interviewed several persons close to the Rastafarian singer/songwriter, including Bunny Wailer, Bob's widow Rita, close friend and Wailers bass player Aston 'Family Man' Barrett and Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records which distributed Marley's most acclaimed work.

"I wanted to show readers a side of Bob they had never seen before. I wanted to tell them stories about Bob they had never heard before," Farley told the Jamaicans.com website. "There have been some interesting things written about Marley in the past, but this book tells the definitive story of his early years. My book sets the record straight by talking to the folks that knew him best - his family and the musicians who played with him."

Marley made a mark interna-tionally in the 1970s, thanks to cutting-edge albums like Catch A Fire and Exodus. He died in Miami from cancer in May 1981 at the age of 36. Before The Legend is the latest Marley bio. Americans Timothy White, Roger Steffens and Stephen Davis have written similar books, so too Jamaicans Dermot Hussey and Don Taylor, Marley's former manager.

Taylor's tell-all, Marley and Me, was a sensation when it was released here in 1995. Christopher John Farley is a graduate of Harvard University who has also written for USA Today and Time Magazine.

Rihanna: S.O.S. (Rescue Me)

rihanna_02.jpgIt's unsurprising that the video for Rihanna's latest single, S.O.S. (Rescue Me) contains an alluring bronzed woman, flashing lights, and close-ups because (1) these are nearly prerequisites for MTV videos and (2) Rihanna is so gorgeous that she really doesn't need to do anything to entertain. Throughout the video she sprawls in a corner and dances in sultry outfits; the lyrics suggest that a boy has her &ldquostressing" and "calling out for help," though she certainly doesn't seem to be losing any sleep over it.

RihannaFor Rihanna, a native of Barbados, this video is a departure from the dancehall theme of her two previous singles, If It's Lovin' That You Want and Pon de Replay. Gone are the beach scenes, the DJs, and the Caribbean backing track. In fact, this video is shot against an erratic monochromatic background, features few choreographed dance scenes, and a thundering beat that is an obvious appropriation of Soft Cell's eighties hit Tainted Love.

As a result, Rihanna's choreography in S.O.S pales in comparison to her previous work, but fits well with the song; the hazy lighting and changing backgrounds even compensate for the lack of synchronized movement.

Overall, S.O.S. is a fairly standard pop music video. Rihanna burst onto the charts last summer with a unique sound, but her latest effort merely indicates that she is versatile enough to produce hits outside of the reggae/dancehall realm, just like every other pop singer. At least, in comparison to her recent Nike advertisement featuring this song, the music video attempts to interpret and complicate the song lyrics. Unfortunately, despite this valiant goal, it ends up being largely indistinguishable from other videos in the same genre, I guess I'll have to wait for her next one to "rescue me" from the monotony.

Sizzla Still Delivers - After 10 Years In The Game

SizzlaKalonjiYardFlexCarlingtonWilmot.jpgRastafarian hero Sizzla doesn't jeopardize his position as Jamaica's most beloved roots reggae star on his latest album, "Ain't Gonna See Us Fall." Unlike his bump-and-grind-prone peers, the dreadlocked veteran delivers exactly what his fans expect of him after 10 years in the game - sweat-soaked songs of spiritual salvation.

No greater is the message of cultural pride than on the choir-backed title track, a defiant yet tender prayer for Jamaica's citizens. "People Need Love," a steel drum-supported plea to the government to improve the plight of the poor, sums up the album's core dogma, that love makes the world go round.

Not surprisingly, Sizzla's love theme transfers perfectly into the bedroom. It's there that he employs his trademark falsetto, tapping into his inner Gregory Isaacs for sugary grooves like "Somewhere" and "Knowing Each Other."

But listeners shouldn't mistake this rudeboy's gentle vibe for weakness. In the snarling "Kill Yuh" an explicit threat to those who betray him, fans will be inclined to believe he'll do just that. He also makes a play for the dancehall with buoyant, radio-ready hits like "Hot Like Fire" and the blistering Run Out Pon Dem, a gangster riddim that rides the same ferocious beat as Sean Paul's Temperature.

Spiritually uplifting songs sprinkled with a healthy dose of earthly reality, this is one sonic cornucopia that would make Jah proud.

Leftside and Esco 'Whistle' for Wata

Leftside&EscoWata.jpgThe new single, Whistle, performed by the duo of Leftside and Esco, has been creating waves since the video hit television screens a little over two weeks ago. The soca-influenced song which is really a take off from the Iwer George hit Water (recorded a while back), has been embraced by the Wata product for its latest promotional vehicle.

'This song is basically a work for hire. The distributors of the Wata product wanted to recreate a song coming off the Iwer George song. The vibe has been good so far', Matthew 'Esco' Thompson explained in an interview on the weekend.

Although a bit suggestive, Whistle appears to have been embraced by loyal soca enthusiasts. 'We hope it will do well for the carnival season. If you notice, the video has a lot of girls, and we tried to create a whole different look', added Thompson.

The video for Whistle was shot on location in Lime Cay a few weeks ago and YardFlex's finest was there PaPa & Razzi.

Hitlist - The 'Sheriff' of Spanish Town

By: Claude Mills
Photos By: Carlington Wilmot

Hitlist.jpgThey call him the 'Sherff' of Spanish Town but deejay Hitlist a.k.a Sherff is no lawman. He is a self-described 'thug' deejay determined to bring the hard-to-digest truths of inner city life to the ears of vulnerable, at-risk youth.

Recently, a combination of Hitlist's live high energy performances and the chart hit 'Please Stop the Killing' currently rocketing up all major local charts, has propelled him into the limelight as the Next Big Thing in the dancehall game - a title that he does not accept easily.

"I am just here to tell the yutes that blood for blood is not the answer. We live inna it, grow inna it, we see man drop out inna it, and my words come from the heart, people need fi recognize what is really going on, it wicked inna the garrison," he told YardFlex.Com.

HitlistB.jpgHe knows what he is talking about. The deejay's personal life was touched by the bloody gang violence that often defines life in the volatile areas of Spanish Town when his eldest brother was killed by a rival gang years ago.

"Mi just hold it still, and know that violence is not the answer. We mature early, see that we parents had nothing, and mi choose music, ah nuff temptation mi face the 17 years mi inna it, but the other way was just death," he said.

Born Marlon Lawrence on January 29, 1979, he attended St. Catherine Primary and Spanish Town High while growing up in the rough-and-tumble depressed community of Rivoli.

Asked about his unusual stage monicker, he responded:

"Sherff is the poor people's representer, there is no 'I' in it so it is not sheriff, no I so sheriff could never be I. It is Sherff."

What about Hitlist, does that connote violence or hit-making musical ability?

"My name really has nothing to do with violence. Colin Fatta game me the name because he wanted me to make hit tunes...nothing violent. In fact, a man can have the simplest name, and kill yu same way, a man can name Pretty Boy, and gi yu six inna yu head, a name doesn't determine the nature of the man."

He recorded his first single, 'Joe Grind' in 1994 for English-based producers but the song was never released locally, and through these overseas links, voiced with producers like Colin Fatta, Maxi, Flux and Hubert Grant. He even found himself in the company of UB 40 for whom he voiced a few singles in 1996.

HitlistA.jpg"Yes, I did some work for UB 40 on songs they were producing for their label but I never did any work with them on their albums, but it was a good experience for me at that time," he said.

The first single of those recording sessions, 'Run the Place' was released in Jamaica in 1997-98. After its release, he did a number of overseas shows, and continued to refine his sound, while voicing for a small army of producers.

However, it was not until 2005 that he recorded the single, 'Please Stop the Killing', that his career began to move in a positive direction.

A protege of deejay Bounty Killer, Hitlist impressed the elder statesman of the business with his savvy lyrics, and his copycat sound.

"Bounty Killa gimme a strength, me ah Alliance, more time me and Killa par. He accepts me as a son and me accept him as a musical father, me sound like him, even talk like him, and him see it as a natural ting...yu caan trick the Killa, him will see right through yu," he revealed.

"Bounty was the one who told me that 'Please Stop the Killing' was my hit song long before anyone else, from last year March in fact, and that was the time he started to call me up on stage shows," he said.

HitlistC.jpg
'Please Stop the Killing' was originally released on the Gogan Music label, and is now available on the Fouta Record label. The song was licensed from the original producer, who recently handed over the rights to the song to producer Carlton Lewis.

Hitlist has not forgot the place of his birth, and references to Spanish Town and the recurring gang violence permeates his conscious songs.

"Spanish Town is always a controversial place, remember that the Arawaks and Caribs used to war in this area, and dem hang the first man inna Jamaica inna Spanish Town, ah pure rubbish gwaan when the Spaniards used to run the cut...the place haunted, but ah fi we place. We coulda do tings, but we hold it out, we know that gun violence is not the right road for a future, blood caan solve the problem...vengeance always come back, ah coulda 10 years from now," he reasoned.

"Me believe that the town can come back, we just need fi put politics aside and build it, we can do it," he added firmly.

Hitlist has a wide repertoire of material. He has a number of songs such as 'War She Waan', which is chock full of saucy bedroom boasts, as well as conscious songs like 'Nah Give Up' for the Mainframe label, 'Unite' on the Kingswell labe, 'Cherish the Love' with Christopher, the self-produced 'Drive and Survive' and 'One Day' for Famzhouse Records, for which he recently shot a video.

"We taking it to a new level, we ah go de pon the whole ah the big show for the Summer. I am an all-purpose deejay, mi can do song for the vipers, for the girls, conscious tunes, anything fi kick down Babylon," he said.

Although Hitlist is not a Rastafarian, he has allowed his hair to grow in dreadlocks and has become a vegetarian in recent months.

"It is just a lifestyle thing. I am not saying rastafari or anything. Religion an illusion, it merely separates people, the Muslim from the Christians from the Hindu, I live straight, I believe in the man who build you and me, the Almighty, not the religion ting, ah de so mi ting de right now," he said.

Finally! A deejay who is not afraid to tell it like it is.

Check the Hitlist at a stage show near to you, you won't be disappointed.

Zekes Guilty - Could Face Death Penalty

Yesterday, Matthews Lane don, 48-year-old Donald 'Zekes' Phipps, was convicted of two counts of murder and could face the death penalty.
Presiding judge, Justice Marsh, has put off sentencing until April 20.

The burnt bodies of the two men were discovered on April 15 last year i
