Jah Cure Speaks From Prison

August 13, 2005
General Penitentiary, Kingston, Jamaica
Jah Cure interviewed by Josef Bogdanovich c/o YardFlex.com
DSR: Given the nature of the charges against you, do you think your charges were excessive?
Jah-Cure: Everything was excessive sentence, was excessive charges, was excessive.
DSR: Do you think you could really survive 15 years in prison?
Jah-Cure: I would have to survive it, because one thing that I know is that I was not going to die, because I see man surviving up to twenty-five years.
DSR: Do you feel sufficiently rehabilitated to be re-integrated into society?
Jah-Cure: Well the system doesn't rehabilitate one, you know, one rehabilitates themselves and I didn’t really need no rehabilitation but, I capitalized on some ways in which I needed to capitalize on, so I feel I got a chance to rehabilitate myself.
DSR: What has the experience of being in prison been like for you?
Jah Cure: It's the roughest experience. It's a life time experience. It's the roughest thing that I have ever been through. I don't think that life can get worse than this for me.
DSR: Have you been able to get along with your fellow prisoners?
Jah-Cure: I get along with most everyone because, true, I have loved and I studied human psychology, which is used by everyone. I don't have a problem getting along with people.
DSR: Are you scared?
Jah-Cure: You cannot be scared when you have the love from the Almighty. Remember that.
DSR: Has your creativity been affected by your incarceration?
Jah-Cure: No! But prison doesn't build you. It kills you, so when you really can push through here so; it's like a rose through the concrete ya!! Knowing that concrete is something hard and you don't know how a rose would come out through the burst part, but, it's just Jah works.
DSR: What keeps you going?
Jah-Cure: Well the prisoner's keeps me going.
DSR: What is your motivation behind bars?
Jah Cure: Hearing the fans, singing my music, and knowing that there is someone out there who hears me, loves me.
DSR: You seem to be more creative now than you were several years ago?
Jah Cure: Yeah, well, I mean, I am now capitalizing on all ways possible and building for when I go back out into society. I want to be able to win souls and be a great man. I want to be much better than before, so in my mind it's a mind frame because you have to get there in your mind before you get there in your flesh. So in my mind I have already gotten there.
DSR: Where do you go in your mind to pen such wonderful songs?
Jah-Cure: I go the farthest that is mainstream in my mind, but, before I go to mainstream I go physically in the flesh.
DSR: Are you earning from your creative efforts?
Jah-Cure: Yes. I am earning physically, spiritually, almost in every way, because you never can loose in a work like this cause music speaks the universal language.
DSR: Are you satisfied that while you are in jail, your earnings are in good hands?
Jah-Cure: Yes. My income is set up inna way. I have my mother and my agents out there and they are monitoring I Cure Music Company.
DSR: Do you think that the music contributes to the present level of crime and violence?
Jah-Cure: Yeah mon! You have to know what your saying but, I am not going to smash no artist. Just know what you're saying because the world is listening.
DSR: What is your favorite all-time song?
Jah-Cure: A Beres Hammond, that says. "Warriors don't cry, lots of folks will hate you, not because they want to but sometimes they don't even know why."
DSR: How did you get involved with DownSound Records?
Jah-Cure: I first got involved with them, let me see, a year ago or so with a tune that I recorded with them called "Congo Man" on the Maroon Riddim. Then a month ago "True Reflection." We recorded that here in GP. The video, everything. I like DownSound, everything they do. Big up!
DSR: Which dancehall and reggae artistes do you admire and why?
Jah-Cure: Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Yami Bolo, Sizzla, Capleton because they are my inspiration and when I see them make mistakes I can capitalize and come good because I see their down fall and their greatest errors in certain aspects of the business.
DSR: Who is Jah Cure?
Jah-Cure: Jah Cure is just somebody who is loving and free spirit and gets miserable whenever things is not right, a nuh nutten a ghetto we come from.
DSR: What was your first job?
Jah-Cure: My first job was to pin up bags in a supermarket two days Friday and Saturday and collect a little $60, anything drop down behind the counter was mine.
DSR: Who was the first person you ever loved?
Jah-Cure: Well, the first person I have ever loved is Shamara and it seems as if no other love ever got so real and a just so it go.
DSR: When was the last time you cried?
Jah-Cure: The last time I cried was when I came to G.P and I saw how G.P was wicked and I was wondering why I left Spanish Town and Spanish Town was so smooth and I was doing all good and I never did anything. It was like a secondary heaven coming to a first degree hell.

Big up Jah Cure. Prison, for you, might be a blessing not a curse. There you can reflect, and create great music from the inspiration of Jah. However, I look forward to your release soon. Continue the powerful work as you inspire the people. Guilty or innocent you should bless jah and live. God love you and the people love you. Let the past remain in the past; look forth. IF THERE WAS NO EXAMINATION OF THE VICTIM, NO WITNESSES,WHAT ABOUT HIS LAWYER? TO ME THERE WAS SOME SERIOUS MISCARRIAGES GOING ON. THINGS JUST DONT ADD-UP. TRUE THERE ARE ALWAYS TWO SIDES TO A STORY, BUT THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUTH.IF THE LACK OF EXAMINATION CAN BE VERIFIED, THEN IT BEGS THE QUESTION WAS THE VICTIM RAPED AT ALL. SHE MAY HAVE BEEN, BUT A GROSS LACK OF EVIDENCE IN ANY COURT OF JUSTICE SHOULD NOT LEAD TO A CONVICTION.

Hi my name is Angel and I'm from Canada, I wanted to send out a message of hope for jah cure and let him know that what has happened to him is outrageous and I didn't believe that such injustice still existed in world and that he is just another victim of a failed justice system and my sister and I are praying for him and we hope that through it all he makes it and that he continue to be strong and not give up.

Greetings in the Name of His Imperial majesty Emperor Haile Selassie the First.
First of all whether Jah Cure is innocent or guilty we(the fans)all love him there are lots of people in this world that has done wrong things than what they are accusing him of doing. We love you Jah Cure stay strong and don't give up the fight cause Jah Jah bless you and no wicked heart can test you.
Second this retied person everyone has their own opinions but who the fuck are you to call Jah Cure a piece of crap the bitch was raped noone is denying that but she was not raped by Jah Cure when she said that he raped her he was already big there was many women that he could sleep with why would he rape anyone. You could say what you like cause I am sure that you have done things in your life that is worse than what Jah Cure was accused of. And the God that Jah Cure prays to is H.I.M Emperor Haile Selassie First fyah bun you.

how could you call this justice. This is proof that our justice system has fail us. Convicting jah cure with so little evidence is so wrong. To take away a man's freedom just like that hurts my heart.A case of reasonable doubt is what i see here and your justice system has fail terribly. So many years has gone by and yet still you all seem not to care or have a heart. Believe me all of you who had a hand in his con viction will pay because god does not sleep. He is a stronger man now and jah cure we love you
BLESSED LOVE. JAH RASTAFARI

I have read jahcure's side and suzannes side of the story.Convicting a man of alleged crime as rape with the defendant saying its his voice and dont know what the hell he looks like is ludercris. Tell me where is justice in jamacia, my heart bleeds to know that jah cure has to go through this ordeal, and for what. nothing that was done by him
FIRE BUN DE WHOLE AH DEM
Posted by: nadine at September 20, 2005 01:19 PM
if Jah Cure is guilty ( which you and I may never know),what about the victim? Jah Cure is behind bars now and still making hits but what about the female who will be forever in bondage from this rape. There is no justice, if we support a wrongful act because the music sounds good. It is good to know that he is rehabilitated ( for society sake) but he must do his time if he did the crime.

Jah Cure, the words of your songs are very inspirational mentally and spritually. Your voice is very powerful yet soothing. I just started listening to your music after I heard "longing for...The first time I heard "longing for" was on " Hot 97" radio station in the states and I was touched by your voice and the words in your song. I'm Now One Of Your BIGGEST FAN!!! I actually listen to your songs every night, morning and especially when I'm relaxing with my significant other. I wish I could meet you. I left Jamaica when I was 8 years old never went back but if I could just get a chance to see you IN THE FLESH I would definetly visit Jamaica again. I know mentally you'rE strong because I hear it in your songs. Jah is guideing you. I'll Pray for your release. You're a blessing from Jah no matter what negativity u hear. I LOVE YOU JAH CURE!!!

WHEN I FIRST HEARD THE SONG LONGING FOR, I WAS LOST FOR WORDS. DURING THE TIME I DIDNT EVEN KNOW WHO JAH CURE WAS. SO, I MADE IT MY BUSINESS TO FIND OUT WHO WAS THE MAN, THE MASTER MIND BEHIND THIS LOVING SONG. DURING THE TIME MYSELF I WAS GOING THROUGH PROBLEMS WITH A FRIEND OF MINE AND WHEN I HEARD THE SONG THAT ONE TIME, IT EXPLAINED IT, DEFINE EVERYTHING I WAS GOING THROUGH. I ACTUALLY SAT DOWN TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT JAH CURE. DIDN'T KNOWING HE WAS IN PRISON AND THAT WAS KIND OF THE REASON FOR THE SONG. I CATCH MYSELF SINGING THIS SONG EVERY DAY THINKIN ABOUT THIS PERSON AND THINKING ABOUT JAH AND THE REASON THAT HE MADE THIS SONG. THIS SONG SENDS CHILLS DOWN MY SPINE EVERY TIME I LISTEN TO IT.I HAVE IT AS A RING TONE I JUST LOVE THE SONG. AS OF RIGHT NOW IM LISTENING TO THE LYRICS BECAUSE THE LYRICS SAYS IT ALL. I CANT REALLY SAY I KNOW HOW IT FEELS TO BE IN A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE HAVE TO TELL U WHAT TO DO AND WHEN TO DO IT. I have listened to and like Jah cure music. But i want to know if he did or did not commit the crime that he is in prison for? I have read the victims statement. He has a very long sentence!!! So does the victim. (If she is telling the truth!) If he did the crime, he should listen to his own words, and admit and apologise to the victim/s of his crime! IF HE DID NOT DO IT. JUSTICE WILL BE SERVED. THE TRUTH WILL SET ALL FREE!!! being famous is irrelevant.

After reading an article by Barbara Blake Hannah titled: Jah Cure, A case of reasonable doubt. in which she referrenced your interview with Jah Cure. These articles answered many questions that i had with this case stemming all the other distorted accounts of this terrible accusation. I only wonder why these articles are not published in the mainstream newspapers so the public would be aware of the facts surroundinng this case. I think public opinion could play a major role in Jah Cure's appeal. I just want to thank you and Barbara and all the others for bringing clarity to all his fans and suppoters, and i can only hope that he will be exonnerated soon!!!
With regards,

I WROTE A POEM FROM JAH CURES PERPECTIVE.
ive been put behind bars for something i didn't do
i've been sentenced for many years
by someone so curel
if only she could see that trying to break me was something smart to do, then she was mistaken
because i much stronger than i was before i yearn to see the faces of those i love
i know theres a message in this from the one above
impossible to see the changes that i've made in my life all they see is just the boy i left behind
because i swear that i can be a better man
so till then i spend mah life
looking through bars
for a couple more years
i lay writing music
hoping my fans
will see me through this

Hey Jah, we all get wrong judgements, but sometimes they turns to out to be a stepping stone in some people's lives. Keep your head up, look on the bright side Keep doing what your doing.
Ur song "True Reflection" is a meditative one, especially for me. I love it.
Keep it up Jah.

hi my name is lisa. I must say big up to Jah Cure. I wanna know if there is no justice in Jamaica. It is very much upsetting to see how our system has failed our youths. I f there were two people involved in a crime why is it that only one is syffering? jah know how everything go . CURE DONT SEE THIS AS A DOWNFALL YOUR MUSIC BRING TEARS FROM MY EYES. SONGS LIKE LOVE MEANS LONGING FOR AND NOW REFLECTIONS. WHENEVER YOU FEEL DOWN REMEMEBER UR NUMBER ONE FAN LISA IS PRAYING FOR U. ONLY JAH CAN JUDGE US YEAH ONE LOVE . I GOT UR MESSAGE 'LOVE MEANS.'....

I am really inspired by Jah Cure and his lyrics in his music for he is so true and so real. This interview is an eye opener into what he really feels and thinks and there are a lot of personal questions in there. My boyfriend is one of his biggest fans. He has also spent time behind bars nad his only way to deal with it was by listening to Jah Cures messages through his songs. He praises everything about him. Big up Jah,
Ya Dunno

i must say that jah cure did rape that lady. So he needs to face up to what he did first, say he's sorry an then be a better person first. If he know he have a problem he needs to admit to what he did. Yes I know people loves him, but be a better man first and admit that you did the crime and you will not do it again, and then people will love you more
