Job loss looms over public sector workers

The months are flying fast and it seems as if by the time the Christmas season rolls around some public sector workers could find it not being a merry one.

Word has emerged that come this year, heads may begin to roll.

Head of the Public Sector Transformation Team, Patricia Sinclair-McCalla, says the numbers are being worked and could not give a time line on when the cuts will commence.

The update came on Wednesday at the weekly post-cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House

It is expected that by October public sectors workers will know how many of them will be sent packing.

Head of the Public Sector Transformation Unit Patricia Sinclair-McCalla told journalists that a recent audit of government workers revealed that there are approximately 113,000 of them.

However when asked how many jobs will be cut or realigned Mrs. Sinclair-Mccalla could not provide any figures.

“We honestly don’t know because it is being worked out. We have one finance specialist working with an organizational officer and they are now crunching the numbers. We don’t want to spew out figures because unless we have something substantive in terms of the analysis to provide you with a ball park figure we don’t want to do that,” Mrs. Sinclair-Mccalla said.

Speculation is rife that the job cuts could be anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000. Mrs. Sinclair-McCalla said that within the next two to three months all the figures will be crunched, and stressed that the loss of jobs are not the only issues that will have to be addressed.

Meanwhile, Information Minister Daryl Vaz says debate on the matter is expected to commence when parliament returns from its current break.
