Rain blessed the launch of the tenth staging of the Portland Jerk Festival on Thursday at the Folly Lighthouse in the parish.
The festival, scheduled for July 5 at Folly Ruins has as its theme “Origins of Jerk” and will feature over 25 authentic jerk chefs preparing a variety of jerked meats including pork, chicken, goat, lamb, fish, conch, lobster and vegetables.

The aim of this year’s festival is “to combine jerk with reggae, family and fun,” and to this end Honey Bun will host a Kiddies Village that will offer some free rides and the Honey Bun Jerk Pepper Bread.

It was announced that title sponsor Pepsi has not renewed their sponsorship after their three-year contract ended, but East Portland MP Dr Donald Rhodd and CEO Casey Bourne were very positive.

Portland Jerk Festival is said to be the largest family food festival in Jamaica and the Caribbean and has created a special niche on the calendar of food festivals.

According to Bourne, “The festival is very important to the economic development of Portland and we see it in going a far way in preserving jerk in Jamaica as uniquely Jamaican.”

There will be a special entertainment package which includes Byron Lee and the Dragonaries, Queen Ifrica, Leroy Gibbons, Tony Rebel, I Octane and Judy Mowatt .
