Buju responds!

l_f443b0785bf24e07ba99a9457dcde4ba.jpgYardflex has been keeping you up to date with the Buju debate and we just had to bring you his response that was printed in the Jamaica Observer yesterday.

The Gargamel sent out a fiery response to his critics. Check out his letter below

Dear Editor, To the supporters of an ignoble regime who choose to hold our people and our music in stagnation, I respond personally. Yes.

You all took my statement out of context and I am not surprised.

I am quite aware of how much you would like to tarnish, but you cannot stop truth.

This music evolves like everything else in life.
For you and all your so called 'musicologists' to say the music is all about one person is totally unfair to those like myself who have been making a significant contribution.

Now, let us get this clear, Bob was great, talented, charismatic, the teacher, the father.

But what about Peter Tosh, Alton Ellis and Bunny Wailer? We owe our musical greatness not just to one individual but concerted effort by a brave set of people.

Now after almost 50 years have gone, a new sound and a generation have emerged.

Must we subject them to the scrutiny of an age gone when our reality is much different?
Give us a chance to grow.

Bob was never loved by you in life.

You are all hypocrites who I think are all the real cause why our music has failed to grow over the years with your open embrace for what would contribute to the backwardness of a nation.

If only you would get paid for doing meaningful work.
You think we all are stupid if you are not the slave driver's protégé.

One love and peace.. me a buy u album now..

I agree with you 1000% Buju. Nuff a dem a hypocrites and wagonist, and for a price too.

Case in point, I have always been a fan of Dennis Brown back in those days and he has made major contributions to reggae music and have not been appreciated or recognized like he should be.
The list of artists who fall into this category are endless including yourself.

People would rather jump om the bandwagon to be identified or to get paid than be truthful and fair.
I admire you for saying something that needed to be said from that platform a long time ago while others are just too afraid to speak the truth.

yow yard flex, i would love it if you could send this one strait to buju banton for me, cause i waan reason wid buju, right now mi loose offa you buju, tell i this buju, wah the i want to be seen as the greatest, well hear mi now, greatness is not something that you can just get up tomorrow and mek up noise or bad up people and get, as a musician, is your music goin mek you be seen as great seen, right now the i them great, all those that you make mention of and the others aswel, but bob,s music is a diffrent type a music buju, its not just a music that you dance to when its playing and forgotton about when not playing, no, bob,s music mek you think, it comfort the heart and expand the mind, no other one music not so powerful at the moment buju, not even you, and if you are not justified in your self, you wont agree to that, sizzla is the only one i see come that close to being as powerful as bob, and jah cure but jah cure need some longer living riddims to sing pon so that his music dont die easily, if we are to draw a music tree buju, bob would be the root, and if you destroy the root the tree dead, so buju if you try to erase bob, then you erase the music, and erase the music you erase yourself, you seh bob was great, you cant say that, bob is the greatest, cause music alone shall live, and buju, bob,s music ago live longer than yours, 99% of the world when wake up in the mornings have bto play a bob, or else is like you dont feel right, its the truth, so until the world start feel that way about you or any one elses music, none a we nuh great like bob,i nuh no bob still, when bob died i was baby but i grow up listening to bob, and eveybody come tek something from bob to make themselves, buju stop think bout personal gain, think bout the youths to come, one of them might rise up even more powerful than bob, but right now bob is the greatest of all the greats, and if you mash down bob, you a mash down the music

no one said the other artist in jamaica were not all great in there own way but as far as i see bob was just the greatest ever, were ever you go you see this man face ever boby knows who he is if you ask ten people who bob marley is they would know who he is if you ask those same ten people who buju is probably 2 out of the ten would know who he is am not talking about jamaican here.am talking about other countries period.

Posted by: Duke on May 5, 2009 06:28 PM

Mi totally agree with Buju; he's not saying that Bob was not great; he did set the trend; but all kings die and make way for another, the throne was not set for one man, every man
has to get the credit they rightfully deserve. Jamaicans let's stop putting ourselves down, stop holding ourselves back 'progress is good'.

Posted by: fx on May 5, 2009 06:37 PM

Buju should either "FIRE" his publicist or hire one. Artistes have to know when they stick their foot in their mouth. Admit the mistake and move on. Dont blame the press for taking it out of context or the fans for not being deep enough to understand. Bob Marley opened up every door that Buju was lucky enough to step through. Shabba Ranks worked like a dog to break dancehall to the world, what has Buju ever pioneered? originated? or done that qualifies him as an innovator or legend?

bob eclipses all others. he is the only artiste that you can go anywhere in the world and ppl know who you are talking about and he his loved by the world.

be a man and admit you failed. dissing mr. marley was and will always be a bad move.

very disgusted by this news.

Bob Marley didn't write "One Love", it was a partial cover version from an a American song. Bless up Buju everytime. Big up Bob Marley same way and all the other reggae artists past and present that are keeping positive music alive. Buju have my support in making such a bold and truthful statement. I know many other artist feel the same way but they are afraid to talk.

BUJU, I THINK THAT YOU ARE CONFUSED, MAYBE YOU THINK YOU SHOULD BE SEEN AS THE GREATEST, BUT BUJU, HONESTLY SPEAKIN, YOU ARE NOT EVEN THE GREATEST DJ, THAT WOULD HAVE TO EITHER BE SHABBA RANKS, BEENIE MAN, BOUNTY KILLER OR SIZZLA, CAUSE THESE FOUR[4]ARTIST HAVE DONE GREATER THINGS THAN YOU MUSICALLY, REMEMBER YOU BURST ONTO SCENE 1992 AND YOU ONLY LAST FOR A YEAR AS A TOP FLIGHT DJ CAUSE BOUNTY AND BEENIE CAME IN I993 AND IT WAS ALL ABOUT THEM FOR THE NEXT 15 YEARS, ON A TOP FLIGHT LEVEL, SO THAT WOULD MAKE THEM A NOMINEE, SHABBA WAS THE FIRST TO HIT INTERNATIONAL AND WIN GRAMMY, SO THAT WOULD MAKE HIM A NOMINEE, SIZZLA IS THE FIRST CULTURAL DJ TO BURST ON THE SCENE WITH A BANG, WHERE EVEN THE CRIME RATE IN JAMAICA WAS REDUCE DRAMATICLY, EVERYBODY LOGGIN ON TO HIS MESSAGE, SO THAT WOULD MAKE HIM A NOMINEE ASWEL, FOR GREATEST DJ OF ALL TIMES, BUJU YOU HAVENT DONE ANY THING SO GREAT AND AM NOT BEIN BIAS, AND ITS NOT JUST MY OPINION, ITS THE TRUTH, A MEAN YOU GOOD, YOU CAME AND YOU DID YOUR THING AND I LOVE YOUR MUSIC ITS GREAT, BUT THOSE 4 YOUTHS DID INCREDIBLE THINGS, BOB IS THE GREATEST BUJU

The thing about greatness is that it doesn't come around often,if it did then it wouldn't stand out..In the era of BOB there were others who also pushed boundaries jimmy cliff, alton ellis,D BROWN(the prince) peter tosh and so on.Any one of these guys could of been first internationally and would of changed history..

In JAMAICA we understand the plight of our musicians and how hard it is to stand out..On a global level their is a handful of artiste that are appreciated fully, but the love will always be with BOB..To how the world love him as long as your last name is MARLEY even if you aint doing good music you still win grammys..

I dont see BOBs fame as being a hinderance to reggae it's that no one has surpassed his international appeal..

it just seems to amaze me when the truth is told how ppl respond with ther inferior mind set. i have to agree with buju. its like they want to keep us on a one track way of thinking. times chang as the wind blows and so will music.

The truth is the truth and who dont like it, ohh well. Bob did alot of the country and reggae music, but there are many others as well and like Buju said, life is evolves so must the music; someone people want to continually quote the nonsense written in the Rolling Stone magazine about Movado being the next Bob.. Bullshit the next Bob could be many other positive please that has made signi. contribution to the music and culture, people like Buju, Junior Kelly, Garnett,Beres and all the other that are rarely mentioned.

Posted by: Maverly_mi_born on May 6, 2009 10:45 AM

Every one is entitled to their own opinion; I totally respect Buju and what he stands for.
I am happy that he has stood up for himself as a professional and has chosen to make a
public statement in which his point is stated in a professional and well spoken manner.
Big up Buju and the rest of the musical father’s who are sometime over look.
RIP Garnet silk…..Mi love you bad bad… Buju we the people support and will always love you…..

Posted by: liongun on May 6, 2009 12:10 PM

BUJU HAS A RIGHT TO VOICE HIS OPINION AND SAY WHAT HE BELIEVES IN. HE HAS ALREADY STATED THAT BOB MARLEY IS THE TEACHER AND FATHER SO DI ARGUMENT DUN DEH SO. I LIKE HOW EVERYBODY FORGOT TO MENTION THE GREAT REGGAE MESSIAH GARNET SILK.

Posted by: jhonny test on May 6, 2009 12:51 PM

Buju u a di boss, U couldnt have assembled that response letter any better, well written and it sounds like it came from da heart, guess rasta got soul after all. Bob, will forever be an iconic figure in reggae music, BUT...the best is yet to come, jus watch poeple u must embrace the talent that is provided for our ears to listen.Buju keep it up,what you said was just something that the whole world needed to ear.

Posted by: Stagga Lee on May 6, 2009 01:07 PM

Peeps unuh nuh realise seh Buju expected this kind of contraversy from his initial statement about Bob. The man is launching his new album he needs to draw the hype and the attention to it and what better way to do that than questioning the greatness of someone like Bob Marley who is loved world wide. This is what you call a marketing stunt. and for you Shelly sullying Buju's character to get your point across failed bitterly because I am sure we all can say bad things about Bob's character too. remember Bob and Skill Cole go beat up disc jockey with pick axe stick a JBC radio fi play him music them.

Posted by: QTEEPYE on May 6, 2009 01:41 PM

BOB IS KNOWN INTERNATIONALLY BECAUSE HE WAS A BI RACIAL CHILD, BACK IN THE DAYS OF BOB IF YOU WERE FULL BLACK YOU WOULD NOT GET THE SAME RECOGNITTION THAT HE GOT...

Posted by: waterhouse on May 6, 2009 02:21 PM

Buju, I understand where you coming from about there were a lot of great artists in the business, who didn't get their proper recognition but end of the day Bob is still the GREATEST. For example, you got a lot of great soccer players, who played the game , but there is ONLY one PELE', you got a lot of great basketball player, but there is only one MICHAEL JORDAN....the prove is in the history book , Bob died over 20 yrs ago and his music still out selling a lot the current living artists, because of the quality of his music....

Posted by: white_rebel on May 6, 2009 03:42 PM

... to resume those words "wise up" - well done buju [only man] banton. but this truth will take time to find its way.

Posted by: Hustler on May 6, 2009 05:03 PM

I find it kinda funny how people are saying a whole about bob this and bob that. If u all remember bob was not really recognised or loved by the jamaican people until he went away. I personally think that he is more appreciated by foreigners than we jamaicans. Bob started this phenomina called reggae music which has evolved into one of the most powerful art form known to man. People must always remember that the music is bigger than any one man. So buju, there has been other greats since bob and still there will be more to come.

Not everybody really knew bob marley. There was a clique in jungle who drove BMWs that consisted of tony welsh, lip and some other gangsters. these men went around with pick axe sticks and beat the daylight out of disc jockeys and sound system man who didn't play the gong music. Who bailed Tony Welsh? Rita marley...is this the type of hero we want? There is no doubt he made great music, inspired many worldwide and didn't do it all by himself. There were the wailers, musicians, promiscuity, weed, writers, chefs and lyricist who all crafted the biggest and greatest reggae stage ever.in doubt, research for clarification.

Posted by: titi on May 6, 2009 08:57 PM

Posted by: talk the truth on May 7, 2009 04:46 AM

what johnny thermos said is the truth, bob music was on another level.when buju did til shiloh and inner hieghts he was on the right track but like sizzla he also fell off the track.bob is the greatest until someone more talented come along.we cant say bob will be the greatest of all time because we dont know if someone better is going to come along but we can say bob is the greatest so far.i agree bob is the root and if u kill the root the branches dry up and pop dung.buju is a good artist not great, not everyone can be great so just give us some good music and stop worry about who is the greatest.eventhough you are not the best you can do your part by giving your best.

Posted by: mike on May 7, 2009 11:55 AM

Bob is the greatest reggae artist of his time
Muhammad ali the greatest boxer of his time
Michael jordan greatest basket ball player of his time
O.J simpson the greatest running back of his time
Micheal jackson the greatest entertainer of his time
and i could go on
so check this reasoning and you will understand what buju is saying
if boxing was still holding on to ali there wouldn't be no Mike tyson,no holyfield ,none of the greats that followed if basket ball was still holding on to jordan would there be a kobe labron james or dwayne wade
if music was stuck on elvis would there be micheal jackson or the other great entertainer I guess not
ok one will argue that they know bob everywhere in the world but if thats what being fed to peopleworld wide thats what they are gonna digest
and that ediot johnny thermous who said that Marley music alone let you meditate and that is the only reggae music that comes from the heart you need to go listen to many rivers to cross by jimmy cliff I add his name because you obviously wouldn't know who sings that song .bless

in response to nuff a di things them that some a the people them a say about the DJ Buju mi just cant understand, exspecialy to the comment from the youth name johnny thermos i have never read such bias comment in all my life, bossy yu even come across as though yu ignorant make me make the argument clear fi yu Buju not saying that bob nuh Great but mi agree with buju a nuff other great jamaican artist that is as great as bob not because the rest of the world don't know about them that dont mean dem not great wat about the great Peter Tosh Bunny whaler Dinnis Brown the list goes on, one comment mention that if you ask ten people outside a jamaica about Bob 10 out of 10 would say they know of Bob and only 2 would know Buju this is the kind of responce that you would expect from norrow mineded white people would give because they dont give the music a chance and they all think that reggae is just about Bob Morley is people like you why the music not geting the merit it deserve, BUJU mi agree with you on this one mi DJ and the DJ done some real concious tunes, is time we all stop living in the pass and give progress a chance. BOB IS THE KING OF REGGAE THAT CANT CHANGE, but move one people on give the other artist them the credit them deserve.

Posted by: imani on May 8, 2009 09:44 PM

Buju is absolutely CORRECT!! Its so childish, immature and simply ignorant to make a point buy insulting Buju. The man has feelings just like other humans and he has children who may read this. Something is really wrong with Jamaicans to react with such hatred. Is it necessary to call him "ugly". Is he ugly because he is a full African unlike Bob? I really can't believe that that slave mentality still exists in Jamaica the home of Marcus Garvey and Bob Marley. All I can say is forgive them father; they know not what they do...And as far as I'm concerned Buju's versatility alone makes him one of the greatest along with Burning Spear, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, and Bob Marley!

Posted by: monica on May 9, 2009 04:11 PM

I agree with buju 100% and I also respect what he is saying. Buju is entitle to his own opinion.

did Bob ever claim to be the great one, man leave the man alone he can't answer for himself, people of the world allocated him such position.. do your self a favour concentrate on your works who knows may be someday you'll be people do the same to you. Remember Bob is no longer jamaican but a World citizen, even here Lesotho people love him. With the latest technology you are complaining available only me amongst my friends luv your music the rest boys and girls, mothers and father evry1 do feel brother Bob.

Posted by: DJRevUp on May 13, 2009 01:08 PM

Bob is Bob, Buju is Buju. In todays generation there could be an artist that is the greatest. Bob was the greatest when he was alive and jamaica never really embrace him. After Blackwell tek him and molded him and also after him sing people song and no give them credit he was loved by the world. After him dead then jamaica say a fi artist that. He's a singer he puts emotion into the words he sings. It wasn't him himself that made him who he is remembered as. It was the the words him read that were written by someone else (most of them). Greatest example of who Marley actually is would be to look at hom much children him have. It seem like anyway him go he would just run round with whichever gal deh bout. Truth is people, me vex fi say it me self. Buju might not be the greatest no time no day but him deserve him respect. One thing he wants to do is make aware those artist that were doing it when marley was doing it and never got them due respect till dem dead. True nuff a we no half white or light skin with straight hair so we no mek it internationally. All though you reading this on a media website most media you don't get to feedback like this so whatever them say bout somebody wash pon you brain and some people tek it just so. So after 50 years of saying Marley is the greatest and king of reggae when buju so that no 100% correct it mash up people head. It's a simple difference between fact and opinion. Some media feed people opinion as fact. Buju no even start nothing yet. Stay tuned.

The truth hurts…how about this…you can force a man to the water but you cannot force him to drink. Again…BUJU you prove how illiterate you are…you response make no sense. Believe me when I say you this…I love you and still love you regardless of your self-righteous ways and your inability to give respect where respect is due. Your comments were not directed toward Tosh, Ellis, Wailer and might I add Culture. You comments was toward Bob. One of the problem I find with most Rasta…is that they feel the world is against them and is always trying to stop their progress. BUJU you know what is stopping your progress the ability to accept and respect…your inability to think outside the box. I could say a lot more but mi a go stop now. BUJU CHECK YOURSELF!

Well said. Bob was great and will always be great, but there are other icons. Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Culture, Steel Pulse, Israel Vibration, Abyssinians, Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, Jacob Miller,Buju and many others. I love reggae but I can't stand the way people just keep idolizing Bob Marley and his sons images as the only "face of reggae". There are so many more. Bob Marley has a special place in my heart and always will. He is an icon but there are other just as worthy of a crown. We should all them appreciation while they are alive, rather than waiting till their dead. I hope Bunny Wailer comes to NYC- NJ again. I saw him 2 years ago in Philadephia and it was an honor to see a icon. I saw Israel Vibration in NY - Let me tell unno- I'm still on that high. My advice to all in Jamaica is to appreciate them as much as you can. Reggae is the world's greatest music. You're lucky that the Lord bless Jamaica with such talented singers. "Shew all ah dem love".
