Police kept busy with roadblocks
Since the announcement of the new tax packages, especially the $8.75 cess on each litre of gasoline, imposed by the Government last week , the police had their hands full with roadblocks on Tuesday and yesterday as various factions of the Jamaican community mounted roadblocks, especially in St Catherine in Kingston.
Taxi drivers in Mandeville and other parts of the island withdrew their services causing many students to be stranded. The taximen have vowed to keep up with their protest until the gas tax is rolled back.
They took this stance because the government refused their request for a fair increase in light of the increase in gas.
Police confirmed that during the protest a female motorist was slashed on the arm and her cellular phone stolen by vandals at the intersection of Molynes Road and Washington Boulevard.
A student travelling in a public transportation vehicle was also robbed of her school bag and the vehicle destroyed by stone-throwing protestors, the police said.
It was a cat and mouse game with the police as residents would quickly mount the road blocks as soon as the police cleared them and moved on.
