Tawes Pen gears up to celebrate with Zebra

zebra-edit.jpgHaving been convicted in November 2001 of one count of rape and sentenced to a total of 10 years in prison for not only that rape, but also assault at common-law, indecent assault and breaching probation, dancehall DJ Zebra will be walking home free this coming weekend.

Zebra, whose voice bears a striking similarity to veteran dancehall great Tiger, rose to fame in the early 1990’s with hits like: “Picture Frame,” “Hype Type of Love,” “Redder Than Red.’ “Rupert” and “Dem Unfair Eh-No.”

Not even a decade later his demise became imminent as a string of offensive behaviors thrust him on the wrong side of the law. Reports ascribe Zebra’s misfortune that resulted in arrests, to his floundering career at the time.

His first serious brush with the law came after he reportedly beat his then girlfriend Sherilla Williams, following an argument at their Oakland apartment; which resulted in an assault of common-law charge being placed on him.

Zebra followed that one with an October 2000 incident where he reportedly fondled a 15 year-old girl, then tried having sex with her forcibly.

The DJ topped it off with what has been described as full fledged rape, when he allegedly used his trusted position as a route taxi driver to take an 18 year old university student into bushes near Barry, St Catherine, where he sexually assaulted her.

There will be a concert and party in Tawes Pen, St Catherine to celebrate Zebra’s release from prison after having been incarcerated for seven and a half years. Zebra became eligible for parole on March 5, 2005, but was required to stay in prison until his earliest possible release date, which is September 6, 2008.

Two years ago he released the tune “Stocky” on the Key One Records label.

I am not sure about the prison system in Jamaica but I know in the American Prison System rapist get know respect and the b*ttyman them would a give it to him hard. Mi can't believe them also a have a bl**dclot celebration for this sexual predator.. What has the world come to

Posted by: Disgusted on September 4, 2008 04:43 AM

I think it is disgusting that a community is planning to celebrate the release of a convicted rapist and paedophile, what is really going on in Jamaica? this is really sick. He should be treated like pariah and the parasite that he really is!

Posted by: whadat on September 4, 2008 05:26 AM

How can one celebrate a bl**dclaat rapist like dat!

Posted by: ganjababy on September 4, 2008 07:22 AM

I hope when he comes, he don't go making the same mistake again. As he has already proven, being a big artist, don't give anyone the rights to do as they feel like with another human being. When one has a little status to their name, it doesn't mean every woman is going to see you and want you, no matter how you may feel about that person. So I hope he can deal with rejections also.

Posted by: clayton on September 4, 2008 09:56 AM

Why is Zebra being celebrated. He obviously has a significant problem and was on his way to becoming a serial rapist before his apprehension.

Posted by: toya on September 4, 2008 11:22 AM

DIS A REAL FUKRY....HOW A COMMUNITY FI A CELEBRATE A RAPIST,,, MI A 1 WOMAN WHO WILL NOT BE SUPPORTING HIS WACK ASS CAREER...IT IS VERY SAD FI SEE HOW TAWS PEN A SUPPORT DIS RAPIST BUT DEM WOULDA QUICK FI KILL A B*TTYMAN, DAT SIMPLY MEAN SEH TAWS PEN A SUPPORT SLACKNESS,,,I HOPE DI PROMOTER WHO PUTTING ON THE DANCE WILL NOT BE CRYING ONE DAY SEH ZEBRA RAPE HIM DAUGHTER...UNU LUV MONEY TOO MUCH,,,UNU PROMOTE ALL SLACKNESS,,,,DAT MEAN UNU WILL GO DO SLACKNESS FI MEK MONEY,,, I HOPE THE DANCEHALL ARTIST DEM NUH PUT UP WID DIS SHIT....BUN A BL***DCLAT RAPIST

There is something really wrong when someone celebrates the return of a CONVICTED rapist.... There should be no party....

Posted by: unnuhypocrites on September 4, 2008 11:51 AM

To the people who left comments you are same people who go support jah cure and come on here and talk about zebra, you real bunch of hypocrites

Posted by: carol on September 4, 2008 12:03 PM

IF U DO THE CRIME DO THE TIME NO EARLY RELEASE BUT IT'S ALL GOOD THE MAN ABOVE WILL KNOW WHAT DO WITH HIM LISTEN TO THE NAME ZEBRA HE NEED TO BE IN THE JUNGLE WITH LIONS & TIGERS THEY NEED TO TAKE HIS BALLS OUT COME ON JAMAICANS WE NEED TO WAKE UP OUR COUNTRY IS GOING DOWN THE DRAIN THAT POOR GIRL HAVE TO LIVE WITH THAT ALL HER LIFE WHILE HE OUT MESSING WITH SOME ONE ELSE OH MAY I WISH IT WAS MY CHILD I WOULD BE THE ONE BEHIND BARS CRAZY FOOL

Posted by: Not right! on September 4, 2008 12:58 PM

This is not right at all... there should be no celebration for this RAPIST...... I know people will say well he did his time and he derserve another change but i disagree, he has proven that he can't change, he did this more than once and now for him to be release is awful... We women now have to live in fear because this convicted animal is now loose.... Why celebrate this pervert? what about his victims? how should they feel knowing that he is coming out and that he has supporters? Ladies just keep away from this animal.... ONCE A RAPIST ALWAYS A RAPIST!

Posted by: toni on September 4, 2008 01:47 PM

@ unnuhypocrites ..... please don't speak for everybody....... it's the same feeling for both... A rapist is a rapist there are no exceptions to the rules.... I don't respect nor do I support a man that takes a woman's right to say NO......

Dear All,

I was kind of concerned when I read this news in the Jamaica Star yesterday. Never liked the dudes music the crazy thing is the only song I LIKED from him turned out to be someone impersonating him.

Now the Rapist thing and the Jah Cure thing yea dat kinda stick You guys gotta bun out both or none.

However I must point out that Jah Cure mad eplostive steps to improve his life and to get some reform. He remained positive about the situtaion and admitted well at least expressed some sort of Regret. In addition he as been actively doing some positive songs from the police yea (TRUE REFLECTIONS)

The last time I heard from Zebra was when he went in now him comming out no nothing.

Jah cure was about 19 when he did his thing so misguide youthful crap played a part Zebra was like about 40 when he raped them chicks.

Further Jah Cure raped one person zebra raped how much again.

Anyway as I said it sticky on both parts but I think Zebra has a lot more explaining and a lot less respect than Jah Cure has.

Mi still deh yah a scratch mi head a wonda what kind a message di media, promoters, and others a send to the public. I remember when it was big shame and disgrace in Jamaica to even go jail fi one night for breaking the law (nuh matter how small di crime was),let alone go prison fi rape, but now it seems like is a fashionable thing. Fi months or even years, convicted felons had to hold down dem head a road when dem si people. If I were a promoter, I wouldnt even dream of nuh celebration fi a convicted rapist, if I were Yardflex, the Jamaica Star and any other media house, I wouldnt even print nutten bout nuh coming home party and if I were Tawes Pen pple di ongle welcome home celebration him aggo get from mi is some pick-axe stick, stone and tambrin switch fi come disgrace wi community. If I were a resident of Tawes Pen I would now be worried about the safety of my daughters and even mi son (cause u nuh know what new tastes him develop inna prison without nuh women to rape). Yes I will celebrate his homecoming but not the way people have it in mind.

That said, this is the second time mi si an Artist get put on pedestal after serving prison sentence for raping. What kind a coming home raas party dem a talk bout? What is happening is that them glorifying and welcoming these monsters into society for committing atrocities against other human beings because they are artists. I dont want to hear bout "him do him time for him crime" stupidities because until he has proven himself to be a changed and truly reformed person, he is still suspect in my mind. The onus is on a convicted felon to prove to society that he is truly sorry for his actions and has no intention of repeating the same. Right now di Zebra look like a repeat offenda and enjoys his little morbid illicit trysts! As fi Jah Cure, dont let mi even start because all like now him not even acknowledge him crime let alone have regrets. Him coulda sing like Nightingale Bird, mi nuh rate him.

All of this "good" publicity is akin to 'rubbing the victims noses in it' or the proverbial "adding salt to their wounds" The media and the promoters speak for these monsters by 'bigging them up' , but WHO WILL SPEAK FOR THE VICTIMS?

Posted by: Disgusted on September 5, 2008 05:13 AM

To unnuhypocrites i most certainly did not support Jah Cure when he came out, and still do not. Infact when i was recently asked by several friends to go and see him at a show i stated "i am not supporting any paedophile or rapist" and advised them not to do so. So unuhypocrites please refrain from speaking about "everyone.

To Marlonex whether Jah Cure comitted 1 rape or 20, it makes no difference. Do you think the child is thinking "well he only raped me so thats okay'? The fact that he was 19 also makes no difference, 19 is a young man and at 19 you definitely know difference between right and wrong. I know for a fact that when my son reaches the age of 19 he would not dream of ever raping a female.

As i stated in my previous comments, Jamaica has some serious problems, these people should be treated like pariahs and parasites by Jamaicans, the fact that they are not speaks volumes and is also extremely scary!

With this attitude / mentality Jamaica will never be able to pick itself up and pull itself out of the gutter.

Brothers & Sisters, any person can change IF they want to. I just hope and pray he doesn't hurt anyone else. If he does, then he deserves anything he gets!

Posted by: tinaflex on September 5, 2008 02:39 PM

disgusted ,you are right jah cure was old enough to know what he was doing. but in my oppinion every man deserve a second chance people make mistake and yes they should be acountable for their actions i myself had made mAny mistake and am sure you all have made mistakes in life that you have regreted so i believe both men have regreted what they have done during the time period that they were incarceration. but if the neighborhood that he is from want to celebrate his return let them mainly because they had already made up there mind to welcome home a man that they see as an idol for they are blind to his faulth and only see's him as zebra the artist from tawe's pen and nothing else, maybe they believe that he was ennocent people can be naive at times. look at how jamaicans welcome jaf cure with open arms, it's the same wAY there are excepting zebra it's okay to post an oppinion but i dought it will be of any good as i said the community has made up there minds.

A crime is a crime, regardless of whom when or where it was committed. There are many many other people who have been in the system & are out in society mingling with you & me & we dont even know.Lets not condemn an individual, we never know what will happen to us or our children down the road.Let us hope for the best. Everyone has their choice to or not to support these people. My opinion is, he did what he did & got his punishment but I will not support him in anyway because the victim could me my mom sister or wife. Its your prerogative,do what pleases you .If you bun him out bun out the other one .seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen a so di ting set up

Tina read this article and tell me if you still feel sorry for Jah Cure http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20050904/news/news5.html

Yes i have made mistakes of course i have, but my mistakes don't include gun butting a 15 year old child and then raping her at gun point whilst she watches her aunt being raped. NO FORGIVENESS FOR A PAEDOPHILE A DAT ME SEH!

And it seems that when he came out of prison he was proclaiming his innnocence????? the man got 13 YEARS in prison and he should have served the full 13 years in prison and treated like the parasite that he is. If i had a daughter and any body did that to my 15 baby i would kill them, no doubt!

As for SUM TING WRONG, i am about to probably start another debate here, but let me tell you what i know as FACT. Plenty of Jamaican man love to RAPE, i have been held down by more than Jamaican man (on separate occasions) and have had to kicks bite, scratch and do just about anything to prevent myself from being held down and forced to have sex. Jamaica has abnormally high rape and carnal abuse cases, the real problem is most go unreported. And when a rapist, a child rapist at that is welcomed back into the community with open arms, a big party and a we missed you, you did nothing wrong attitude it is no wonder why.

Note that both jah cure and zebra (ugly f**kers that they are) raped children. They need to be hung drawn and quartered.
