Brittany Lyons crowned Miss Jamaica World 2008
By: Jaide
Brittany Lyons took the Miss Jamaica World crown at the Hilton Kingston Hotel, New Kingston.
Crowned by last year's winner, Yendi Phillips, the 19 year old Lyons came out on top over 15 other contestants.
Jade Grant and Marsha-Gay Reynolds were first and second runners-up respectively at the Olympic themed show titled 'In Search of Gold.'
Show hosts were Nadine Hunt and Adrian Atkinson and while the evening was full of exciting moments with contestants showcasing their abilities in various forms, there was the added stirring touch of master performances by the Stella Maris creative dance troupe, Soul 4 Soul and Angel.
One focus was on physique as always; so contestants strutt their stuff in gold bikinis and modeled sensuous top designs in evening wear.
However, the outlined aim of this pageant has always been to uplift women who participate; promoting individual development in all areas including self-worth and self-esteem.
Lyons, who is employed at The Body Shop Ltd., was a crowd favorite in the swimwear parade and she also won the 'Beach Beauty' award. Other awardees were Monique Daley who walked away with the 'SoftSheen Model' award, Raecine Williams – winning the 'Beauty with a Purpose' and Yanique Levy who came away with the 'Miss Jamaica World Sports' award.
With a life ambition to succeed in Fashion Marketing, Lyons wants to put her mark on the world through that industry.
Wearing the sash Miss Logo Stitch, Lyons was shocked when her name was announced. She had major support from especially her mom Marie-Claire Lyons, who in 1976 was a runner-up in the pageant where former Miss Jamaica and Miss World, Cindy Breakespeare was crowned.
There was some disappointment expressed by some onlookers, who wanted other crowd favourites like, Raecine Williams to have at least been included in the top three.

Amazing how a very small fraction of the Jamaican population looks like her, but history will show that the ones that look like her have won most of the Miss Jamaica competitions. Hmmmm. I'm sure she is a decent young lady, but she doesn't represent the true make up of my country at all. They should rename the competition to Miss Uptown Kingston, then it would be more fitting.

Brittany answered that her favorite personality was Barack Obama because he was the first African-American to run for US Presidency. I guess its beauty over brains because Obama wasnt the first to run(Jesse Jackson, Alan Keyes, Lenora Fulani, Al Sharpton). Ms Lyons is who we're sending to represent us to di werlll?? Thats like replacing Usain Bolt with molasses at olympics. But i guess its who you know and who knows you.

Lyons is CORRECT. Barack Obama IS the FIRST African-American to run for the US presidency.
The others (Jesse Jackson, Alan Keyes, Lenora Fulani, Al Sharpton) RAN for the NOMINATION to represent their party; in the run for the US presidency. They (Jackson etc. ) were never NOMINATED and therefore, NEVER ran for the presidency.

Yea she's pretty ugly. She's not that good looking sorry. Her nose and her mole kills her. I don't think she will do all that well. On another note, I am a Jamaican living abroad and I honestly don't get this immense facination with Yendi Phillips. She is pretty, takes good pictures sometimes...in some pictures she looks amazing, in others....not so much. She is tall, has a great body. She's hot. But she is not stunning in my opinion. Her facial features aren't THAT striking. She's just another pretty brown girl to me. And there are alot of brown girls in Jamaica who could give Yendi a run for her money. So I don't know what the big deal is. For example, Lisa Hannah back in her day was the shit! I don't know maybe it's because Yendi is the first attractive Miss Jamaica World in a long time...maybe that is the reason for the hype? Maybe someone can explain the facination. Oh and this is JUST MY OPINION....so noone jump all over me saying I'm probably ugly and hating because that is not true. I actually model to help pay for school fees. I'm one of the Maxim caddy's. This is just my honest opinion..and I am looking for some honest yet respectfull answers!

I noticed that since many jamaicans come to america they jump on the race band waggon with regards to the multi ethnicity which exist in our country. Jamaicas problem is poverty not racism please we do not need to jump on the racism that exist in america- our motto say out of many one people.

first of all you guys are haters....Why can't you guys jus be happy for her and hope she wins for our country. Who gives a crap what colour she is, she is still black, she is still Jamaican. People need to stop saying foolishness that ppl like her only take up a small portion of Jamaica...Like are you stupid. If you lived and knew about Jamaica you wouldn't make such ignorant comments. The motto states 'out of many one people.' If you havn't realized the mix races within Jamaica, i guess you should shut up and stop chat rubbish. Because you look real STUPID!
