Usain Bolt makes lightening gold win in Beijing

By: Elizabeth Smith

bolt.jpg
It may be something to do with his name; since the invincible Usain Bolt
literally bolted out the starter’s block at Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing
today creating not only Olympic history but also Caribbean history by
championing the 100 meter final.

Doing Jamaica proud, it was an astounding race for the 21 year old Bolt
who clocked a breathtaking 9.69 second finish, setting a new world record
and garnering an Olympic gold medal.

The expected faceoff with Asafa Powell, who until recently held the world
record went completely ‘out the window’ as Bolt led the 100 meter sprinter
pack leaving Powell, who finished the race in 9.95 seconds, way behind.

Clocking in 5th in the race, Powell came in behind Richard Thompson of
Trinidad and Tobago, who earned himself the silver medal at 9.89 seconds
and Walter Dix, an NCAA United States champion who picked up the bronze
medal with his 9.91 run.

It ‘s being touted as the night that Canadian, Donovan Bailey’s
long-standing Olympic record, set in the 1996 Atlanta Games came crashing
to the ground. Bailey had a 9.84 gold win then.

Tyson Gay of the United States, who was the reigning world champion, did
not qualify for this final race as he finished 5th in his semifinal heat
in a time of 10.05 seconds. A tendon injury in his hamstring, suffered
after the US Olympic trials is cited as the cause of Gay’s second-rate
performance.

Overjoyed, Bolt gave the more than 90,000 spectators a taste of the new
Jamaican ’no linga’ dance while the stadium’s sound system blasted reggae
music. Bolt, who has been outstanding on the track since high school, hung
onto his moment - waving the Jamaican flag and holding up his track shoes.

Gearing up for his 22nd birthday next week, Bolt was accompanied to
Beijing by his father Mr. Wilby Bolt, who was practically speechless
following the win. “He surprised me…” his dad exclaimed, as he joined in
congratulating his son.

Before heading off for drug testing Bolt mentioned his one desire at that
moment was to hurry up and get home to Jamaica, where he wants to
celebrate at Quad Night Club.

Asafa you super telanted, but you need to work on your stamina. Your only problem is that you are not recovering fast enough, to execute, to your best ability and this stem from luck of stamina.

Don't give up, you have the ability to achieve great things in the future.

Lightning struck over and over again. The man wasn't even trying and he still killed the competition. If Usain can stay healthy then he will break into the sub 9.50 range. Asafa didn't look like he was in the right frame of mind. I don't know how or why Jamaica always very fast runner but it must be the ital food.
