Lecturer labels Jamaica as Anti-Gay at AIDS Conference

jam-flag_anit-gay.jpgRobert Carr, Executive director of Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition (CVCC) and a senior lecturer at the University of the West Indies, painted a graphic picture of Jamaica as a country where police officers attack and/or ignore homosexuals who go to them to report crimes against them, at the International AIDS Society conference in Mexico City, Mexico, recently.

Using power point, newspaper clippings and pictures as evidence, he highlighted the country's negative attitude to homosexuals. Pictures showing police officers with weapons drawn and members of the media filming and taking pictures during a homosexual mobbing in the Island's capital. A story, in the Observer, saying that homosexuality was "contrary to natural law". Carr also mentioned that violence and discrimination against homosexuals were celebrated in popular music.

He, however, noted that the attitude of Jamaicans to gays is more favorable now than four years ago through the recently launched initiative of involving civic leaders, government members and officials of the Catholic Church, as well as launching media campaigns in a bid to bring about this change. This changing attitude is duly noted in a letter received by the gay lobby group, Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals and Gays (J-FLAG), written to the Police Commissioner Hardley Lewin, accepting responsibility to protect the rights of all people and promising to change the culture of the police force. Carr also noted that there was also marked improvement in the attitude of the island's religious leaders.

I have to say GOOD for the (majority) people of Jamaica for standing up for their morals, standing up against what is wrong and not being afraid to let the world know! I would never condone mistreatment of or violence against anyone but we have a right to stand up against what is wrong in this world today!

Everyone knows that Jamaica is against homosexulaity and that's no secret. Jamaica will continue to stand against homosexuality no matter how much pressure the counrty might come under. What kind of example are we setting for our children? I only wish that Jamaica would take the same stance against killing as we do against homosexuality.

I am a Jamaican living overseas and I dont condole homosexuality because it is totally wrong in the sight of the creator for either man or woman to be with the same sex.And if one can remember back in bibical times Sadom and Gomarrah was distroyed besause of the same things thats happening in our world today but I try to be tolerant of people who are ignorant to the fact that God created ADAM and EVE not Adam and Steve when all is said and done homosexuality is totally wrong.

well i agree in standing up for what you believe but there is a downside as well. what if your well loved son comes home and says mommy/daddy i'm gay, then what? will you be so eager to "knock them down"? i think tolerance is the best way to go on both sides. they should not push their lifestyles in our faces, do it in the privacy of your home. the way the world is changing and how our kids are growing up exposed to all kinds of things we dont know what they are going to be. it's not like back in the day when you could safely predict the outcome of your son/daughter, now everything is up in the air. you just cant tell anymore. even the girls are picking up this lesbian thing so what can you do but love them? i would not encourage it but if thats my son/daughter i dont think i would have much of a choice but to accept it. thank God i dont have any kids lol

terie THIS ONE IS FOR YOU. YOU SAY IF A CHILD COMES HOME AND SAYS HE IS GAY IF WE WOULD SCRUTINIZE HIM. WELL I WANT YOU TO KNOW THERE ARE CHILDREN OF GOD AND CHILDREN OF THE DEVIL AND THE BIBLE SAYS IF MY RIGHT HAND OFFENDS ME CUT IT OFF. FIRST THING IF I SEE MY BOY CHILD GETTING ON LIKE A SISSY I WOULD LICK IT OUTTA HIM STRAIGHT TREAT HIM BRUTAL PELT COCONUTS AT HIS HEAD EVERYDAY TILL HE COMES TO THE REALISING HE WAS BORN TO BE A MAN NOT WOMAN PARENTS DOES UPHOLD A LOT OF CRAP. LOOK WHEN JAH READY FA THIS WORLD LOOK MAN THEM BATTY BOYS GINE RUN TA THE HILLS TA SAVE THEM, NUTTIN CAN'T SAVE THEM.

nobody should agree with this, is totally wrong and the way it's so acceptable these days to do this is a disgrace. I have to say if my child came to me and told me this i would not kno whhaaaaat 2 do, i hope i would have raised them 2 know better.

BUT

to condone the violence, the victimisation only gives them more rights from human rights and also on a religious ting... God does not believe to hurt your brothers and sisters, so the only thing to do is pull together raise our kids so they know that this is not right. but not to give these groups more fuel for their filthy fire.

dash coconuts at your kids head r u serious? if my son says hes gay i would hurt him physically or mentally i would hand him the bible make him read scriptures explain to him that dicks and butts make no babies its good that Jamaicans stand firm of their beliefs that homosexuality is wrong. On the flip side there is so much ignorance in Jamaica against homos first of all gay people most of them are very friendly and easy going lol mayb too easy going. Ive seen people turn of others just because the person is gay if my friend admits he gay im not gonna shun him im gonna do everything in my power to keep him away from hells pits if he is truly my friend. Jamaica should stay strong on their views but less focus on getting rid of gays and more focus of helping and bring them out of their ungodly behaviors and also focus on getting better jobs in Jamaican and education and reduce crime im tired of reading about gays

THEY WOULD PROBABLY CONVERT YOU. YOU NEED TO REALISE ONCE YOU'RE IN YOU'RE IN FOR GOOD. OH ABOUT THEM BEING NICE BULLSHIT GAY PEOPLE PRETEND TO BE THE MOST NICEST AND CLEANEST PEOPLE BUT ARE THE MOST NASTIEST HOW YOU EXPECT TO ACT LIKE YOU WONT MASH A FLY AND INSTERTING YOUR DICKY IN SHIT DAY BY DAY I WOULDN'T EVEN COMMENT ON THIS ISSUE ANY FURTHER COS I DON'T WANT IT IN MY THOUGHTS PURE FOLLY JAH KNOW. I'm sure God is really pleased with Jamaica's attitude that you should kill or beat up homosexuals. He's so proud that Jamaica is following his two greatest commandments:Love the Lord your God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself. Jamaica epitomizes the hate and ignorance, NOT homosexuality, that is bringing down the world. I find it funny that if we are to follow in Jesus footsteps, he never ONCE mentioned homosexuality in the bible. NEVER ONCE! Christians need to stop shoving their religion on others. Christians today are nothing more than the Pharisees that Jesus spoke out against, the pompous religious leaders who were all about the teachings of THEMSELVES, NOT God. Besides, Jesus was a party animal, his first miracle was turning water into wine (not grape juice as some have IGNORANTLY stated) and he dined with tax collectors and sinners. If you don't believe me, read your bibles. You have to know WHAT you believe and WHY...stop spewing out garbage that you heard on tv from some televangelist or from your pulpits. Remember, Jesus said test ALL things, and that INCLUDES your pastors and priests. Know what you believe and why people, know what you believe and why.
