"St. Mary Mi Come From" Launch 2008

The launch of the seventh annual staging of "A St. Mary Mi Come From" took place at the 'Top of World' at Jamaica Pegasus, on Tuesday evening. Though off to a late start, the show progressed into an exciting evening.

The show began with the singing of the 'National Anthem', followed by the welcome and opening remarks by Mrs. Norma Brown. Mr. Desmond Young, Mr. Bryan, Ms. Kemp, Mrs. Barnett and Constable Rochelle followed with greetings.

Guest speaker, Mr. Miquel Lorne, spoke about the history of 'A St. Mary Mi Come From', and his disappointment in the lack of recognition this production has been getting from the Jamaican population. He expressed that as this is one of the most charitable events it should be more widely recognized.

Mr. Clifton "Capleton" Bailey, in his response, explained why he primarily gives back to health and educational institutions. He quoted from the Ethiopian prayer which states, "aged protected, sick nourished, infants cared for". He also pointed out that his majesty, during his reign, placed a lot of emphasis on both health and education. He then delivered an Acapella new track which addressed the present crime situation and made mention of the new presidential candidate for the United States, Barack Obama.

"A St. Mary Mi Come From" has been successful in exposing fresh new talent, as reflected in the performances at the event. Such performances included: Jody-Ann Pantry, Noddy Virtue, Hail Selassie High School and Oberlin High School, whose performance was so excellent in its execution, that they were called back for an encore.

Big up to the Fire Man. Nuff Respect.
