Eek-a-mouse went on a dissing path

When asked at last week's Carifest C.A.R.E.S. (Compassionate Artists Recognizing Entertainment Solutions) press conference what Carifest meant to him, Eek-A-Mouse replied. "It doesn't mean (expletive) to me." He then changed the subject entirely and went off on a tirade, dissing all the white people who control reggae, like Ace Of Base, Matisyahu, (whose name he repeatedly mispronounced and called Matissaweh), Sean Paul and Shaggy; bitterly blaming them for his inability to get signed by a major label. He even included the late, great, reggae founder Bob Marley in his racist rant, citing that he had a white father.

Don't take our word for it...check out the video for yourselves

Posted by: Joi on June 17, 2008 04:24 PM

No that's wrong. Jamaicans control REGGAE and it will always be that way. people will come and go and make money but everyone knows Jamaicans run and control REGGAE for eva. Don't blame. What reggae really needs is for people to invest in it. In the states and say other country there needs to be a reggae radio station, without it people will not hear it every day. there's Irie t.v. so that helps but we really need a main stream radio station beside the online ones. That was a classic.....

Eek A Mouse is implying that the bigger acts in Reggae Music are Caucasian or are a lighter complexion such as Shaggy, maybe the Record Companies feel that it is easier to market Caucasian acts such as UB40 and Matisyahu or those acts are less hassles to work with. Most of the consumers of Reggae outside of the cities with high Caribbean populations such as (Toronto, New York, Miami, London & Birmingham) will not be of Afro origin hence the Record Companies may just be playing a numbers game.

kinda sad ... every show i seen, it was white boys buying eek-a-mouse him tickets and him tees ... one more thing: reggae is music. no one controls it. music is freedom. but this man sounds like a bitter old man enslaved o his anger. wish you all the best.

I can understand Eek A Mouse's frustration. Unfortunately that is the case with black music. It is frequently controlled by people who did not originate it, however, there are better ways of disagreeing and rectifying this situation. People still have to have respect for others. Music can still be a unifying force.

just say no to drugs!

I am black and I'm a born and raised Jamaican, what eek a mouse did was out of pure jealousy. In reggae music, if your music is good you will have an audience. I've watch videos on youtube with eek mouse performing in Israel, touring and even going to the wall where other jews were and praying; they had him on their national TV for a sit down interview. White people have loved reggae music when many black Jamaicans were hating it and is still hating it today because of the Rastafarian culture that they resent. To dis Bob he should be more than a shame of himself. Sean Paul may not be a ghetto youth but he is humble and he pay his dues to reach where he is. lets look at black Jamaican success story in Reggae/Dancehall. Shabba Ranks 2 Gold album and 2 grammys, Mad Cobra Flex went Gold, Patra went Gold, Supercat & Shaggy paved the way in NYC/USA for Jamaican Artists to follow. Junior Gong is not living in his father's shadow He is a great lyricist and Artist, And the Great Bob, like it or not His music just surpasses everyone else in reggae, His lyrics, melody, vocal range and style is like unto none, Peter Tosh is also an Icon that white people work with and helped him advance his solo career. In closing eek a mouse is an hypocrite, cause Junior Gong even sampled his tune on the welcome to Jamrock album and he say he doesn't get recognition, he's a jealous fool and I hope the Israelis and Europeans who have given him his biggest fan base see this hypocritical arrogant speech of his and take the just measures in not supporting him anymore, Jamaican music is run by Jamaicans that is why gays protest everyday and can't get what they want so eek is a plain idiot.

much truth to what he is saying

Posted by: Joi on June 18, 2008 04:21 PM

No matter what reggae, dancehall, all jamaican music sounds 200% better when it sung by a jamaican. jamaicans can tell when it's a jamaican singing. Jamaicans created this big music and noone can take that a way, so everyone just have to do their thing and things will happen. Reggaeking i know all the cities you mention has a huge Jamaican community where i live in Chicago has none. What's wrong with living in a bush! If you can find a bush in Chicago where you can live in let me know because that would mean FREE RENT.

I don't agree with eek-a- mouse and the behavior he displayed. It's obvious he is not able to express himself in a clear, consise manner. So here is the deal... It's not that reggae music is controlled by white people, reggae music has now become stagnant and is no longer growing. Consider the era that eek-a-mouse represents...gregory isaacs, dennis brown, toots and even the great BOB MARLEY. Those artist created and performed REGGAE MUSIC. The mistake is that people are now classifying DANCEHALL music with its violent, degrading, demeaning lyrics as REGGAE which is not the same. Yes there are some white artist especially europeans who try to maintain the integrity of the original form of reggae music. THIS IS A WAKE UP CALL. STOP MAKE SLACK, VIOLENT NON-SUBSTANCE music and give reggae a NEWBIRTH. The music has been dead for some years and needs LIFE in order to continue its growth process.

Posted by: Fernando on August 15, 2008 06:44 AM

We all have a right to our opinion. No need to criticize a legend for having his own opinion on the matter. Eek has been putting out positive vibes in all his music and his live shows are the best, as a reggae fan this is what matters. So what if he has a strong opinion on this issue. Much Respect respect and thanks for the Mouse and all other reggae legends.
