Losing our School Girls to Immorality
By: Jodi-Kaye Watson
Gone are the days when school girls respected themselves and their uniforms. What is happening to our teenage girls? Everyone wants to be in hype. Buses and taxis without music seem to be losing. The buses and taxis have to be blazing the sounds of Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man and Mavado just to name a few. Some can sing the words of these songs without stuttering but try asking some of these girls what they learnt in school and one would think "the cat got their tongue". When will they realize that education is the key to success; education gives us the independence we need as women to survive.
Some girls no longer feel comfortable sitting in their seats but instead have to be positioned in the laps of males. Some even go to the extreme of having sexual intercourse on these buses and taxis. GIRLS - you need to start respecting yourselves and your bodies. If you refuse to respect yourselves how will men respect you and treat you as young ladies. Remember your body is the temple of the living God.
And to the adults in these young girls' lives - don't play the blame game. Instead try reaching out for counselling with them, because in some instances the root of the problem can be traced back to negative experiences.
Abuse and lack of emotional support are two of the causes of such behaviour. So parents, spend time with your children, love them and never abuse them. If you abuse your children they will expect and even accept abuse from others.
Teens, choose your friends wisely. As the saying goes "show me yuh company and mi tell yuh who yuh are." Its okay to say no, never let anyone influence you to do wrong or engage in activities you are not comfortable with. Friends who influence you to do wrong are not your true friends. It's okay to ask for advice and seek counselling. This is not a sign of weakness but a sign of maturity.
Dare to be Different!

i have read ur column agree with ur column, Allow me to Enlighten u, when i was going to Sch 1996 High Sch, Girl always perfer to take the bus with Music, and it was like Beenie and Lady Saw back then, but guess wat we have to respect our Sch Uniform, y bcuz our parents were very strick then, the Parental Guardiance has broken down, bcuz we young ppl r Parents Today and we are light on our kids, bcuz our parents were too strick on us, everthing change, even dance goes until 9 am the next day, when it usually ends by 4 am, look lets us join hands to guide our kids in the development of person like how our parents did, stop looking at other sources, we are the one that has them, so let us protect them and nuture them please.

we as parents need to realize we have to be there parents and not there friends ,as i told my daughter we will not be friends until she finish high school and ready to go to college because that time she is basically a woman .the men have to be blame forthis behaviour too some of the these girls do these thing for populartiy and some times wants and adults have to say no look how much big woman in jamaica who need a man but i guess its cheaper to by kFC than to support or mentain a household.

I have realized that these girls have lost their pride. They let friends and HYPE influence them to do these thing. I agree with you. They are truly losing to Immorality.

I am happy to see that im not the only one who feels this way, i only wish that other young girls could read it and put it into PERSPECTIVE.

i remember when i was about 13 (i'm now 30) i'd put on some cherry chapstick or something and i'd barely gotten in the house when my mother started blazin me up!! saying one of her friends called and said they saw me outside wearing lipstick!! well i was so furious at the injustice cause i knew i wasnt wearing any damned lipstick!! what made me more mad is that at the time i had to be thankful she didnt tell my dad!! but now that i look back i realize that, although she and her striking friend were both misinformed, my mother was going all out to emphasize her ideas of values, virtue, even rites of passage -- those things that separate the girls from the WOMEN. and I am better off for it. that is what's missing nowadays. the old idiom is still true: IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD.

some parents can't or won't talk to their children. they just turn a blind eye. some of these girls are so out of hand, and it's not long before they are no longer even attending school.

I hear you all loud and clear, but what about the young boys? Are they not to be held to the same standards as the girls?
