THE HISTORY OF VALENTINE'S DAY
 Valentine's Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honor Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.
The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia, the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl's name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry.
Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II, Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that Roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius canceled all marriages and engagements in Rome.
The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Saint Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270. At that time it was the custom in Rome, a very ancient custom, indeed, to celebrate in the month of February the Lupercalia feasts in honor of a heathen god. On these occasions, amidst a variety of pagan ceremonies, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed.
The pastors of the early Christian Church in Rome endeavored to do away with the pagan element in these feasts by substituting the names of saints for those of maidens. And as the Lupercalia began about the middle of February, the pastors appear to have chosen Saint Valentine's Day for the celebration of this new feast. So it seems that the custom of young men choosing maidens for valentines, or saints as patrons for the coming year, arose in this way.
Believing that Valentine's Day exists to celebrate the memory of a saint who valued love and romance, many exchange love notes or Valentines. Others believe that Valentine was later confused with the Norman French word 'galantin' meaning "lover of women". Through the passage of time, the two have merged with the result of St. Valentine being remembered as the patron saint of lovers.

this is some real bullsh*t, v day is straight a pagan day, they celebrated this day by drinking blood and locking them self in room with a bag a man a drink blood and f**k each other, so stop fool people, is a pagan day of celebration and u all need to stop sugar coting the real deal of this day. roman where all gay back in the days so all this pick woman name out of box and pair up with a lover is bullsh*t, a bay batty man pair up and like i said drink blood and eat raw meat, and celebrate there madness. woman where not respected back in these days by these men, they loved there owne kind man kind that is, so cool with the brain washing.

All 3 of you sound real ignorant!!! Out and bad...how do you know what took place? Were you there.. If not did you read this somewhere and if so let me know where. Ther rest of you need to go an pick up a book or go to a library and get your info straight.

This is a straight pagan holiday,consisting of animal sacrifices (dogs and goats).Sorry Phat Tiger you are the ignorant one! You need to research St. Lupercalia and find out wha really gwaaan! A pure Greek freak ting a gwaan from the early centuries. The problem is they give us all these holidays and no one ask questions about them.

The first three comments are so ignorant "it nuh stop ya so"...First and foremost you guys are STUPID...if unno know unno history(and i dont mean the history of jamaica)...you guys would know that the month of February in Roman History is the time of FERTILITY and LOVE...With that said, Saint Valentine DID NOT want to convert to paganism and that is the reason why Claudius II had him executed...as stated above Saint Valentine was a priest and he use to secretly wed MAN ad WOMAN who were in love......I know this because I am studying EUROPEAN HISTORY.....so to all di fool fool JAMAICANS dem who tink say Valentine's Day a ba**yman thing...uuno nuh have no sense...I would suggest unno go take a history book and read, rather than a kill innocent people....me cant stop laugh cuz the three first comments are so ridiculous and so farcical!

Educated if u know study history as you say you will know that every major holiday that christians celebrate has a pagan background the most popular of them is Christmas day.
AND valentine was not killed because he refused to convert to paganism he was killed because he was marrying the soldiers of the empire with the emperor did not want because he felt that the soldiers would think more about their wives.
As i said all of the holidays valentines day,easter,Christmas,new years day are of pagan origin

The Single Biggest Problem with African PPl is there acceptance of Europeansism which European Paganised Christianity is the front runner of. So much of the New Testiment which was used to condem u of you africaness was written by King James who murdered his own mother. Do some research and see how many books in the bible where conveniently left out by those scribes and pagans. Because the truth of "Jesus" Blackness is in them, the truth about Africa is in them. They want you to believe in their Europeanism and think that christianity is going to save you dumb African ppl. What they don't want you to know is that Christianity started in Africa, and the Idea of a single God is an African Concept which spread throughout the world. Now i listen and hear all the comments that were made. I am Jamaican and we dont need no book fi tell wi seh Valentines day is a waste of time and money. Mi nuh just show love pon V day, mi dweet all year round. V day have pagan origin so does most other holidays we celebrate, so mi agree wid all who against this day. Flamyz, u need fi stop try belittle people with u European History bcuz it nuh matter how much you learn from textbook. Common sense tells it all and it quite obvious you nuh have much. I read through the comments and i must say its very interesting. I am glad we as jamaicans can discuss our past and present with mainly convincing reasons. however, if v-day is a pagan day to your knowledge, then dont celebrate it. if its a day of love, celebrate it. make the day what you may, but dont crush other persons view. afterall, why is december 25th an holiday? who truly knows when Christ was born.... p.s. it was the date was chosen to rival an existing cult holiday. (oh yes, i learnt this in an all white christian university... from a white man!) thus, lets look pass race and even the level of education someone has.. show love to one and all.. lets build jamaica.. lets fight the rass crime.
