Free Speech in Popular Music to be Discussed at Forum
An emerging media entity on the Caribbean/New York landscape, ZYNC-TV, will examine the boundaries of free speech in today's popular music culture, at a specially arranged forum at the Grand Army Plaza branch of the Brooklyn Public Library (Eastern Parkway/Flatbush Avenue), in central Brooklyn, on February 7, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
"A number of today's artistes are beginning to feel the pressure of censorship because their lyrics speak out against certain lifestyles and concert promoters now run the risk of having to cancel events or make considerable adjustments to their line-ups for fear of boycott, demonstration and rejection," Eion Saunders, co-producer of ZYNC-TV and the forum's convenor told JIS News.
The forum will draw on a number of key resource persons and personalities from the music industry, academia and the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual & Transgender (GLBT) communities.
Mr. Saunders said that while the historical and social context of homosexuality in Jamaican culture would be discussed, the panelists would tackle vexing issues such as the double-standard involved in banning reggae artistes, in particular, and race.
The panelists will include, Poet/Activist, Stacey-Ann Chin (GLBT); Sirius Satellite Radio Programme Co-ordinator, Pat McKay; Professor of Caribbean Literature, Kelly Baker Josephs; Irie Jam Radio host, Roy 'DJ Roy' Walters; Donald Powell, Executive Director of the anti-Discrimination Project at Gay Men of African Descent; Stan Evan Smith, Journalist/Co-host of Reggae Roundtable,WBAI Radio and D'Niscio Brooks, Promoter, Reggae Carifest, New York.
ZYNC-TV will video-tape the forum, which will be developed as a special 'edu-taining series of programmes' for its weekly half hour show, which airs on NYC Channel 73 on Sundays at 12:30 p.m.

Freedom of speech is a must!
from both sides of any argument each side must have a fair say,and both sides must be open to hearing and feeling the responce from the other,
once u take peoples artistic expression away, you take wot makes each individual person themselves,
No man has the right to deside for others wot is acceptible or wot is regarded wrong or indecent, everyone should be accountable only to them selves regarding the content of there art, lyrics poems and as such there expresion to bring foward new views an opinions remains.
this is not a 'same way thinking world' an should be open for all to bring there self expression foward.
with our freedom of expresion comes the responcabilty for them,a responcability wich should not be put in any ones hands but our own,
if we choose to bring upliftment for those in sufferation,or bring light to a domestic sittuation,or if we choose to test are lyrical ability by writting a inuendo based slackness song, or evan if we express a vibe with no particular message behind it,is that still not our own choice....
glad to see a open debate,it can only be a gud thing to bring such tings foward so big up

Well, i am very interested in the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual & Transgender (GLBT) communities. Actually, we have made some discussion about it at the bisexual club (bimingle.com). It must be very interesting this time. We do expect this special debate.

And dat is your personal choice ya see, no man is saying dat u have to change your view, but if u hold a view u have to be willing to listen to a next man view, tek dis to a choice bout freedom of speech to the freedom of ah lifestyle,
if a man waan get close with a next man it is dem 2 man choice fe par an do dem ting deh with responcability for dem actions...
this part is weh it gets complicated....
if a law is made for example its against the law fe muder an teif so we can bun an chat our disaproval against dem, chichi is also agaisnt the law but to bun dem man is not allowd,so ya see a hypicritical sittuation, no one is saying or suggesting that tings should change, but the option to discus these tings must be available.
its for the yute dat the elder's have to come togedda ina adult fashion without no war an contemption an be willing to sihdung with a next man regardless od his choice of words or choice of lifestyle an discus how they can help presurve a safe place fe ah next generation to come tru......
remember no man has the power of da almighty, all we can do is tek everyone as our bredda ,every ooman as our sistrin an respect wot dem waan fe do with dem own life an lern from it,remember mi seh just becos it is being discused ina forum dont mean dat its gana bring new rules an changes, its just disscusion...
if i man did attend i would be defending i right of expression and my bredda an sistrin right for there's to,no matter weh dem feel like dem waan tun all kinda ting, just live da life weh yuh mek fe uno self an stop worry bout wot a next man is gettin up to.

I'm interest to see what will come out of it. You cannot advertised the killing of someone just because his/her lifestyle goes against your beliefs. Freedom of speech stop where it begins to spread hatred and violence. These singers as a responsibility as they are seen as icons and they can be very influencial specially when it comes to kids and teenagers. As a collectivity we have to draw the line and not give a stage for hate speech. Someone that disaprove a lifestyle can express it without violence and he/she can even use non pejorative term. To me that way, means that we are dealing with a mature being.
