The final night of Curefest exemplified the perfect show

By : Joseph Cunningham

The final night of Curefest, dubbed, the 'Longing For' concert, proved to be one that did justice to its build up, as a celebration of the rebirth of one of Reggae's favourite sons, Jah Cure. As opposed to the previous night and second event titled, 45 Cure's, the crowd was huge and festive spirit extremely high.

The moment Yardflex arrived at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose stadium, close to mid-night last Sunday, October 14, an energy was felt that is not customary so early during a Reggae show.

It was a night that defied all negative customs at high profile events in Jamaica; "word throwing and it's associates," but stayed true to that of electrifying performances. Jigsy King's run in with the police, who met and walked off with him following his spicy lyrical showdown was a slight dent in the smooth vibes.

From the early stages when MCs Jigsy of Danger Zone and Nuffy engaged the crowd with lyrics, gimmicks and antics, all present could have foretold that it would have been a night with a difference. Early performances from Jimmy Riley, I-Octane, Jah-Mel, Little Joe, Nitty Kutchie, Captain Barkey and Wickerman along with many others scored big with the patrons. Band changes were done swiftly, and so patrons never got restless.

More masters of artistic expression then began ascending the stage. Junior Reid got blood rushing harder in the venue with his actual appearance. He delivered his hits done in collaboration with United States rappers The Game and Mims. The stage was set for a massive Monday morning.

crowd.jpgArtistes like, Cecile, Queen Ifrica, Lutan Fyah, Fantan Mojah , I-Wayne and Morgan Heritage delivered their material with energy that was enough to garner good crowd responses.

Daylight soon appeared, and when Capleton made a surprise entry on stage - the first deafening crowd response was heard. He was joined by Munga Honourable who delivered, "Bad From Mi Born" and "Wine Pon it an Talk to Mi". The audience was now ready for an ultimate treat.

Bounty Killer and the Alliance then came, performed and conquered. Accompanied by Mavado, Busy Signal, Wayne Marshall, K-Queen and Bugle, the warlord had a refreshed look. Bounty delivered new sharp lyrics on stage and the audience encouraged him. The rest of the Alliance followed his example and were in a menacing mood. They delivered an explosive set.

Beenie Man appeared in the rising sun, claiming that he was there to set the stage for Jah Cure's arrival. That might have been a good idea, however, according to the grumbles of patrons in an earshot of Yardflex, the set was slightly dismal, and before he was done, some in the audience proceeded to boo and clap, advising him to leave the stage. In the early morn, the slightly fatigued crowd just wanted their share of The Cure.

Jah Cure then followed and he could do no wrong. It was minutes after 8:00 AM and nobody moved when he appeared in full white. All of his songs connected with the audience. Songs delivered from his new album were sung "word for word" by patrons. This was a sign that the concerns about his release from incarceration had experienced a transformation into acknowledgement of Jah Cure's good music - which is what he is really loved for.

Yardflex, Thanks for the rundown, but where was Jah Mason. He has some nice tunes, and has a huge hit 'Run Come' with Jah Cure.... i am so frustrated. He is so underrated in JA. I hope he doens't start singing about badness to be recognized.

I am demanding more coverage of Jah Mason!!

WESTERN BUREAU

It was a case of too many eggs in one basket at Cure Fest on Sunday night.

Many top artistes never got the chance to perform adequately, because of the jam-packed line-up for the one-night show.

On a night when Beenie Man produced what many believed to be one of his best stints for 2007, when the veteran Jimmy Riley committed his Love and Devotion to the ladies, while his son, Taurus, went on the Battlefield and Morgan Heritage went Down by the River, as the female patrons accepted Coco Tea's invitation to Tune In, the stage managers had their hands full, trying to facilitate the approximately 87 acts that turned up to perform.

Calls for encore performances of some of the top acts in reggae/ dancehall at the event, seemingly fell upon deaf ears, which saw MC GT Taylor of Irie FM earning the wrath of the over-16,000 patrons who converged on the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium for the historic event.

SOMEBODY A LIE!!!!!

Posted by: Gramps on October 18, 2007 10:26 AM

Beenie overstay him welcome on the stage and the ppl start clap him off. WHen him hear the clap dem him talk bout "Gimme a round of applause if yu like how mi perform!" The ppl start boo him so that him know say a come him fi come offa the stage.

Keisha,
Everybody deserve a chance yow, if the man guilty him deserve a chance fi start life again. Yu never mek mistake yet? Mi feel the pain of the young lady to and mi wish har all the best in life. The reality is pain and suffering is hard to deal wid but wi have to show love cause we all need love. I forgive him if he really did it. Give the man a chance yow.

876 fi life

Posted by: shelly on October 18, 2007 01:13 PM

Keisha, if you so chose not to support Jah Cure that is your right. Jah Cure has paid his debt to society, and it angers people like you that he was welcomed back into society with open arms.

It is quite obvious that more people are willing to forgive him and let him live his life.

I think you should do the same.

Jah Cure won't be the first or last man to rape a woman. We pray that it doesn't happen to our loved ones, but he sat in jail for almost 10 years, what else do you want from him???

Posted by: Charmaine on October 18, 2007 01:20 PM

Some people only look fe who dem don't like fe see when dem get boo cause that mek it worth while fe dem likkle change weh dem spend at de show.
Just do a statistics and see how many times Beenie get booed vs some artiste weh dem a give props

Posted by: fan4life on October 18, 2007 08:58 PM

It look like Keisha jealous over de rape.
Gwan go beg a rape so you don't have to stay vex.

Posted by: Imani on October 19, 2007 09:53 AM

Keisha,

I agree with you 1000%. And I am ashame that so many artists who proclaim to love women so much, would support this rapist.

Jah Cure is lucky he got out so early given that he commited such a heinous crime. Since he is so spiritual he should become a farmer in the hills because as long as he is out and continuing to make music, the Victim an dother Victims or rape will be constantly reminded of their suffering.

As a woman, I cringe at the thought of even being next to a MONSTER like Jah Cure.

There are many other artists out there who would not dream of raping a woman that we should support.

In many other countries, Jah Cure would have been banned from a public life.

I agree that he should be forgiven but he HAS not asked for forgiveness. He is obviously still in denial.

Posted by: Orane on October 19, 2007 10:04 AM

Dat deh boo caah stop beenie man. Keep strong yute.

Posted by: MARY on October 19, 2007 11:48 AM

I like Keisha and I somewhat agree with her their are many other entertainers out there that are known rapist in the industry and pay off the police them, when u are a woman you will know how it feels to be violated in that way. He did rape that female and a couple other, this is not no hear say, but if you peopple want to support a rapist feel free to, but let me tell you this once a rapist always a rapist. You never hear a child molester only molesting only one child. Good luuck to Jah Cure if he ever makes it to the states. one person asked about what about the rapper them, believe me they either did there time or the paid the victims dearly, ask Tupac, ask Puffy ask Mystical. He do jail but still insist he didnt do it.

gunalliance came saw and what?...............look how much violence is in the world ........what are those guys doing to stop crime in the country of jamaica .......bullet?..........boom bang?........gunshot in your face ?........what is going on?......we need a change .....people need to tek weh themselves from individuals who sing crap to poison other people minds for money ......life is too precious

Some ah oonuh is so thoughts are so mixed up that oonuh a confuse oonuh self.
Jah Cure live in the western civilization that wrongfully accused him.
If a man didn't do anything wrong, why would he apologize or ask for forgivness.
The same justice system released him and oonuh vex but oonuh ah talk bout forgivness.
Oonuh so bitter inside that oonuh don't want to see the man survive.
Free up oonuh self and know seh a suh it go..oonuh don't have no powers fe stop him.
Nuff ah oonuh frock fe less than sugar cane.
Nuff ah oonuh have oonuh freedom and don't do anything wid it.
Jah Cure a humanitarian
Jah Cure a inspiration above what he went to prison for.
Him music touch millions of people and give them hope.
So why oonuh a tear him down with negativity
Oonuh a criticize, and if a homeless beg oonuh a $ oonuh frounse pon him.
Nuh body nuh waa hear bout Jah Cure a rapist..dat gone.

Posted by: Smurf on October 20, 2007 10:44 AM

As a man I can only imagine what someone that has been raped has gone through. look at it this way how many of us out there has never sinned? How many of us has never broken the law? no matter how petty it is. How many of us can say we have never made mistakes that we now regret? In every country there are laws and there are punishment for breaking them . Jah Cure was tried, convicted and he did his time according to law. so now what he must beg , steal ? No he can sing so why not use it . Iam sorry for all those women that have been raped but we have to move on especially when the punishment has occured. Live on Jah Cure Live on.

wha mek u hate di cure so KEISHA YU DID WAAN HIM RAPE U SO U CUDA INA DI LIME LITE LEFT MI ARTIS ALONE, FURTHER MORE U NUH NO WAH HAPPM

Posted by: FROST on October 20, 2007 03:02 PM

The man went to prison paid the penalty and is out on parole, what's the fuss about? There are a lot of criminals/murderers walking around robbing and killing people who have never been to jail yet there in society living normal lives. Jah Cure is an entertainer not a rapist. Everybody makes mistakes but not everyone gets a second chance. As Jamaicans we should try to encourage him so he doesn't make the same mistake twice, try to accept him for who he is now and not for the wrong he has done in the past. You don't expect the man to go and isolate himself in some mountain and forget about his career. We need t start thinking positively and learn to forgive.
One Love!

Posted by: palma on October 20, 2007 05:45 PM

yes frost i agree with you 100%. Keisha is angry and she has all rights to be, but those without sins throw the first stone. one love, forgiveness is the greatest love of all., who the hell are we to judge he was judge found guilty and did his time, is he to re-live this for the rest of his life, is that what is expected from everyone after committing what is wrong, . God came on this earth to save sinners , not holier than thou, or all of the self righteous , self proclaimed people, i met jah cure in jamaica this past summer, and he is one of the most humbliest youth you can come across, now i am not saying what he did or did not do is ok, and by all means be forgotton, but y the hell should he be continually re-judge by society.
