Mother or not, celebrate with "Soulmate"

An uplifting film that penetrates every emotion felt by women at different moments

By: Janice Dayle

_soulmate2006.jpgOn the same side as Mother's Day, is the celebration of life, love and God. For all women, that includes the celebration of self. An uplifting documentary called "Soulmate" joins in this celebration, giving viewers a riveting cinematic journey into the realities facing successful, saved and single African American women today.

Andrea Wiley is the documentary's filmmaker who recognises the films propensity to impact and even change the lives of women. She stated, "I believe that we're all born with a hole in our souls and it can't be filled with money, career success, sex, material things or even our families. Only God can fill it."

Inspiration came from casual conversations with women close to Wiley that revealed an undercurrent of extreme loneliness and a general pattern of singleness that was not altogether satisfying for a broader demographic than she expected. Discovering statistics that included numbers indicating: Black women are five times more likely to remain single at 40 than White women and The more money and education a black woman has, the less likely she is to ever get married or have children - moved Wiley to action and soon she was creating a full length feature film on the subject.

"Soulmate" gives voice to the thoughts of successful, single women who love God, but desire a mate. Each opinion shared by the narrators speaks to the heart and soul of every woman." Revealing the trials and triumphs of unforgettable women, the documentary offers hope and practical advice on issues such as loneliness, the desire for sexual intimacy, men on the "down low", the ticking biological clock and the uncertainty of the future, giving surprising revelations about the quest for one's true "Soulmate".

Wiley, who has written, produced and directed four other documentaries is Jamaican born and was raised Brooklyn. Her first calling was to electrical engineering, for which she earned a degree from Boston University. In 1993 her television writing and producing experience took form and Wiley has since amassed an extensive body of work including network comedy series "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and "The Jamie Fox Show." For "The Parkers" starring Mo'Nique, Wiley served as Executive Director.

Currently residing in Los Angeles, the mother of two sons says, "With all the blessings that I've been given, none of them compares to the deep joy and fulfillment that I receive from my personal and intimate relationship with God."
