Bunji Garlin, blend dancehall and Soca - Gearing up to shoot video in NY
Bunji Garlin, Two-time International Soca Monarch, will be in NYC from May 13 - May 20 for a promo trip and video shoot for "Brrt." On May 22, 2007, VP Records will release his latest album, "Global," and Bunji will support his album through various radio, press, in-stores and album release parties during the week.
The anticipated album features Bunji's signature blend of dancehall, soca and reggae. Highlights include the catchy stand-out track, "Brrrt," on the Bobby Konder's March Out riddim and collaborations with the legendary Freddie McGregor on "One Family" & hip-hop artist Chris Black on "Swing It." His new video for "Brrrt," will be shot in Manhattan at the Riddim Driven Clothing showcase room and at Club TNY.

How can both sides dis de creativity of African decendants? Calypso was an integral part of Jamaican society before reggae (bob's original band members played calypso), but changed accordingly by the influences of blues and jazz music. Soca today has lost its social commetary and is just jump up music, but the same can be said about dance hall reggae. Soca artist dance on stage wid a bag a man, but dance hall artist do de same ting wid all dem new dances dem a create (all man a dance...check de video dem) year after year. Plus what's worst when a dancehall artist claims to be a bad man, but wear pink, tight pants, color im hair orange an a sing pure man tune. Many people the world over love reggae and dancehall reggae because of its catchy base lines and the mystique that surrounds Jamaican culture (exported by bob & the rastafarian movement). However, soca has its following also, and though it might not be a s big as reggae it shouldn't be degraded by small or close minded Jamaicans who know nothing of the Afrocentric origins of calypso (soca) music. Carnival could never be garbage for it depicts a link to Africa as seen by many troupes and the same can be said about passa passa as our ancestors danced when they were consumed by the spirit. How foolish is both arguments

Girls in a Soca dance much nicer than them horrible gyual on Passa Passa but i still dig reggae music. More fun and better a** to wine on in a soca fete. Ask yourself do i rather go a dance to blaze and put meh lighter in d air or go a soca fete and wine on some gyual behind...

i think these against soca is jelous about something..i like reggae dance hall ,we soca people like you'll tune . so why you can't just leave the thing =???
Me not liking soca is not a big deal. Jamaica was never a soca/calypso island we listened to American soul, ska, etc. not calypso/soca. You have a few Jamaicans who might have found it interesting but for the most part we had our own thing. I said I don't like soca so leave it at that. Dont make this a bigger issue and threaten me again cause internet or no internet I can get real devious so dont start with me, talk 'bout if i dont like soca and say in on YARDflex.com i'ma get "frig up" like Im gonna change my mind cause some p**yh**e cyan accept that fact that its in my eyes plain junk. Please. Its not a big deal, i find soca and calypso to be annoying so deal with it.

it pains me to see that west indians who have no knowledge of their own culture talk with such conviction and haste. namely jamerican girl do not take this as a diss but more as a learning experience. step 1. Go and research the history of jamaica and its artiste namely bob marley and you will find that his first batch of music was inspired by calypso as he frequented trinidad.
From your wording i concluded u have not done any research so u speak based on your own personal feelings thats fine but a little facts makes us sound so much more intellect try it.
would it be so bad if calypso was actually an integrall part of reggae, ok this song "what a bam bam" sung by sister nancy and others that originally a calypso check it you will find i'm right.
" Girls everywhere from jamaica canada and usa" from shabba ranks the song IS FROM "Bills BILLs everyday" song by arrow who gave the world the one of the biggest songs to come from the carribbean "hot Hot HOt'
T.O.K's song "fire fire" that song was originally sung by calypso rose years before they even dreamed of singing
I challenge u to check the facts.
Byron Lee and the dragonaires are they not jamaican, and do they not sing calypso and soca and mind u they did cover versions of songs from superblue preacher and sparrow just to name a few
Ricky general did he not sing a song called "matte o u making wedding plan" originally done by the mighty sparrow named "melda o u making wedding plan"
listen i can go on for hours at end but my intention is to show u and others like u a still tongue keeps a wise head instead of flying off the handle and dissing other peoples culture seek to understand it where would reggea be if the rest of the world thought how u did and decided like u . imagine if the japanese peolpe dediced not to support your culture and the americans decided not to grant visas and because they did not like your music as a matter of fact jamacian artiste come to trinidad and we show them love and support so what kind of west indian are u
I feel sorry for a generation if the limited ability u posess to broaden ur mental history wise is stagnated to the point where u only know waht u know and thats it.
ONE OF THE PURPOSE OF LIVING IS TO UNDERSTAND LIFE AND APPRECIATE ITS DIFFERENCES NOT DISRESPECT AND DEPRECIATE BUT HEY IF THATS WHAT U KNOW THEN I NOT ONLY FEEL SORRY FOR U I ACTUALLY FEEL SAD- HOPE THIS HELPED U IN SOME WAY BUT THEN AGAIN I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF IT DID NOT!!!!!!

Umm to the comment about this website being "yardflex".com, a yard is a housing developement in the caribbean In Trinidad it was the Panyards that were dangerous places. A Yardy is a slang for a ghetto jamaican. Jamaica is now called yard but... the word yard is Caribbean. In Puerto Rico they call it "Barrio" and in Brazil and the ABC islands in "Favela". Me eh know bout u but I dun know Jamaicans doh own de wud "yard".
