Jamaica's First Rastafarian Beauty Queen heads to be Miss Universe

Zahra Redwood, Jamaica's first Rastafarian Beauty Queen left for Mexico on Monday, April 30th for the Miss Universe Pageant. A press launch was held in her honor at the headquarters of Pulse International. Coincidently, she was crowned on the birthday of Emperor Haile Selasie's wife, Empress Mennen.

It was a night of elegance excitement and pride as distinguished guest gathered for a final send off. A sneak preview was given of the different outfits that she would be wearing for the completion. A series of casual and formal wear was shown from Puma and Jamaican designers.

mss-jamaica-sexygirls-beyonce-jay-z-rihanna-sara-lawrence.jpgSome favorites were a red elegant dress with a red, gold, and green train. A baby blue sequence dress with a sexy split was modeled. The most outstanding outfit representing Rastafarian teachings and Jamaica was a red skirt with a black Bob Marley shirt accompanied by a dynamic red, black, green, and gold cape with a magnificent Lion of Judah spray painted on the back.

In an interview with YardFlex.com, she expressed her feelings about winning her first title as Miss Jamaica Universe, "Its absolutely flattering to be representing Jamaica, especially internationally, feels wonderful right now. Jamaica is the land of Rastafari."

When asked if she was nervous or had any fears and challenges about Mexico she replied, "I have no fears and I don't entertain any negativity or challenges representing Jamaica." Many are speculating whether a Jamaican, especially a Rasta can win Miss Universe especially since three women have won Miss World but not Miss Universe.

Jamaica's first Rastafarian Beauty Queen is not an ordinary Beauty Queen with only physical attributes; she has a bachelor's degree in biochemistry. Beauty, brains, and cultural relevance are the key assets to winning the Miss Universe competition, which Zahra Redwood possesses.

"I see it as a phenomenon to be the first Rastafarian beauty queen" beamed Miss Jamaica Universe. She closes by addressing the youth, "I recommend all young people to listen and adhere to the words in Bob Marley's Wake Up and Live, a great song telling the youth to live life. Don't sit around, live out your dreams and thoughts, and make them a reality."

Posted by: Whis-Keezy on May 3, 2007 06:41 PM

Very beautiful girl I was wondering when they would send a representation of Jamaica as Jamaica is known internationally. Not to look down on our past "caucasion" Queens but people are expecting a "black rastafarian" when they hear bout Jamaica, and thats because of the constant advertising of Reggae music and artistes. So I'm happy u won it here and even if u dont win it all I'm proud of you, and proud of being Jamaican.

I know she will do absolutely well. She's intelligent, attractive and has a powerful mindset. It is all in beleiving, that you can achieve anything regardless of what others may want to say. I know you will represent jamaica very well.

Congrats. We studied at the same uni (UWI), only I was ahead of her (by years). I think she's a pretty girl. Its sad though to read the comment that other jamaicans post about her (not on yard flex). Some of them were absolutely racist and disgusting. Just because she doesn't have that traditional Miss universe look (ie fair skin and straight hair). However, I must say I am happy for her. Lets face it majority of J'cans are dark skin so yes she does represents. I pray she'll go a far way. God bless

She is absolutely beautiful, such a departure for the norm. I completely respect and applaud her efforts to pursue this goal. Beauty should be diverse and multifaceted and we tend to think of ourselves as beautiful if we conform to the Eurocentric standard of beauty. This is putting that myth to the test.Beauty comes in all forms and that is powerful. Anytime you go against the conventional there will be challenges and those who cast doubt but I have so much confidence that she will do an amazing job. Best of luck Zahra!

Posted by: Slim on May 4, 2007 11:10 AM

Bigup to all Rasta, lets get it right, Rasta is a way of life. For this beautiful women I hope she wins Ms Universe. But lets not push her as a Ratafarian, because to be Rasta, you must first be a Christian. She is a beautiful dread.

COCO LOCA YOU SHOULD CALL YOUR SELF COCA LOCA MEANING CRAZY COCAINE. YOU ARE EITHER ONE OR BOTH OF THE FOLLOWING: A HOUSE SLAVE OR A SLAVE MASTER'S BENEFICIARY; CAUSE YOU ARE A LOST SOUL, BABYLON IS YOUR MASTER AND YOU SERVE THEM WELL, STAY THERE WITH THEM CAUSE WE WILL NEVER ACCEPT YOU WITH YOUR SELF AWARNESS DEPRESSION. PRAYER CAN'T HELP YOU SO I WONT EVEN PRAY FOR YOU. IF YOU LOVE THE WEB THAT YOU CAN PLACE COMMENTS THEN SEARCH GOOGLE FOR THE WILLIE LYNCH DOCTRINE AND IF YOU CAN READ AND INTERPRET YOU'LL KNOW WHY YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE AND IF YOU WILL HUMBLE YOURSELF WHICH I DOUBT, YOU WILL SEEK TO CHANGE YOUR MENTAL SLAVERY WAY OF THINKING. THIS ALSO GOES FOR THE COMMENTATOR OWEN WHO I KNOW WOULD RATHER IT BE A RED SKIN UPTOWN CANDIDATE GOING TO MEXICO. BUT TOO BAD THIS SISTER IS NOT JUST BEAUTIFUL CUZ OF LOCKS BUT SHE WAS JUST BORN THAT WAY. GO MY FRIEND WHAT EVER HAPPEN IN AZTEC YOU ARE THE QUEEN OF A CRADLE OF CIVILIZATION AFRICA,ETHIOPIA TO ISRAEL. BLESS UP

Zahra - You are a regal & royal rasta. Blessed with beauty, brains & brawn. You have really distinguished yourself as a cut above the rest. I wish you all the luck in the world. Of all the beauty queens Jamaica has seen - you are in a class by yourself. Nothing but the absolute best in all your endeavours.

Posted by: CALALOO on May 6, 2007 10:34 AM

@ COCO LOCO - YOU SAID LADY SAW STAND A BETTER CHANCE. LADY SAW ALSO SAID "CHAT TO MI BACK".
ME SAY "TEK WEY YOUSELF". IDIOT.

BEAUTY IS NOT ONLY ON A PHYSICAL LEVEL. HAVE YOU HEARD HER SPEAK? SHE IS SO INTELLIGENT AND WELL SPOKEN - LOOK FROM WITHIN.

Posted by: kereen birch on May 6, 2007 12:44 PM

Man I am overwhelmed with proudness. I believe that she is and will always be a winner. As a fellow rastafarian who is in the medical profession I am sometimes frowned upon for my locks. Zahra, nuh pay di haters no mine. Yuh a di bes whe deh bout right now. Jus go a Mexico an represent fi all intelligent Jamaican women. Big up yuself as a rasta. "Hol yuh 'ead 'igh"

well i didn't know she was this beautiful after seeing the pics above.. she has a great chance

Posted by: Bohwe on May 6, 2007 03:54 PM

She is a pretty woman, but not trying to hate on her. I'm glad she is representing for the dark skin black women in Jamaica, since it appears you get no love in your country. The only problem I have is the fashion choice. I know that she wants to represent Jamaica, and who represented JA to the world, but the dress with Bob Marley on it, is kind of over kill. And the red dress. I honestly feel that if she wanted to represent her culture and accenuate her dreds , she should have selected dresses similar to Lauryn Hill Miseducation days. They were beautiful, and classy, made her stand out. The dresses that Miss Jamaica kinda looks cheap. Sorry, but they do. and when in competition with other countries, they will have dresses on point. I think she should have gone with a simple Bohemian wardrobe. The dresses are way over the top. Less is more. She's a pretty girl, why try so hard.

Posted by: Apollo on May 6, 2007 10:13 PM

Simply puy the woman is REGAL AND BEAUTIFUL. Bohwe i think her style is PERFECT. I have mixed feelings about the costume. but you never know what will sell.Marley rip. continues to be one of the mosst popular culturaal icons from ja. like it or not.
Right now the beauty wesites has ZAHRA as a HOT FAVOURITE in fact they have her in their top 20. I think if all is fair she will make the top 5.

Posted by: queen B on May 7, 2007 03:51 PM

Finally, a black skin girl. Jamaican women need to take a page out of this young lady's book when it comes to appearance.
No Bleaching cream, no chemical in her hair, She is not that pretty but still was crown Miss Universe.
Now, That's Beauty!!!!

In response to lacia on May 3, 2007 08:19 PM
"i think she is pretty for a rasta girl, she looks really refine."

You think she is pretty for a Rasta girl? So you think, "Rasta Girls" are incapable of beauty. Do you think that Zahra is an exception? Think Again! Let me drop some knowledge on you. Women are beautiful in their natural state, designed by the Creator. Weaves, straighteners, tummy tucks, bleaching and all the other variety of vanity that many women choose to do to alter their nature doesn't necessarily equate to beauty. So please love your people in all their glory because this is Mother Natures' gift to us. Black women are beautiful, no matter shade, shape or form. The sight of a Rasta Woman is refreshing.

Congratulations Zahra! You exude beauty, charm, grace and the good vibration of the Jamaican Spirit.

Posted by: Aishah on May 8, 2007 12:39 PM

She's pretty, no doubt about it....but I'm confused....what DO Rastas believe these days? Some of her attire does seem to cross the line of modesty....so where do Rastas draw the line of modesty these days, at least, in dress? Just wondering....

Congrats to Zahra - true epitome of Beauty and Royalty. Indeed she is a queen, we must never forget that Africa boasted great and powerful Queens even from the time of Queen of Sheba. Therefore, we must stand proud of our Jamaican Queen, and admit that she has and is paving the way for us to once again reign in Royalty. You go MY QUEEN, no matter what is being said you still wear the crown and the gown, don't mek negativity get you down. Your coronation has gone down in history, and not even time can change that. Wi proud a yu..words can't tell.

Posted by: barnbrat on May 16, 2007 05:59 PM

she doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell to win miss universe. the outfits are hideous and she is being done a disservice by making her think they are beautiful. strictly amateur and more suitable for the west indian day parade in brooklyn.

Posted by: J-Sadss on May 17, 2007 10:07 PM

Zahra, the most high has granted you the blessings to represent your country, countryman and woman to the fullest.

your like the roses; ones that the honey bee approach, splended without lipstick pan your mouth, natural, natural natural................

Guidance, blessings and we as a proud nation, people with a timely history and culture will be banking on you to RISE TO THE OCCASION!!!!!!!

Black and moving on non stop, heading straight to the top straight to the top, more love, J-Sadss seh bless.

Posted by: Doctor on May 19, 2007 09:31 AM

Barnbrat, lacia, Incognito, coco loco
and the other "haters" who said she is not that pretty. You are absolutely WRONG! What do you define as pretty? Straight hair? Light skin (as close to white as possible)? Light eyes, (blue, green or hazel)? Straight small nose? Very slim body? Small bootom?

For your information we are all beautiful. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. We have emancipated our selves from mental slavery as Bob would say, so we can appreciate Zahra's beauty. She is pretty, cute, beautiful, smart, classy etc. She is royay! And she is an inspiration for black girls whose beauty have not been appreciated.

I only have one question for Zara; would you marry me?

Posted by: MajorT on May 21, 2007 12:07 PM

Barnbrat .... these are not the outfits for the pageant. Yuh nevah see a Miss World pageant before ? Demm wear evening gowns, bathing suit, etc.

She is gorgeous and smart. She has the same chance of winning as any other contestant (1/77) and therefore may be hard pressed to win, but your opinion re: her chance in not justified. She has been projected a top contender in some international magazines.

Go to the Miss Universe site and have a look at her apparel for the pageant, as well as categories that will be considered for the vote.

Posted by: Shan on May 22, 2007 02:45 PM

Yes she might not be the typical Miss Universe but it is with great pride that she will wear Jamaica's sash. It is very disrestpectful and rude for people to be saying all those negatives comments and they themselves couldn't have done a better job. "It is better to bite your tongue than to make a biting comment." She will be remembered even if she doesn't win and she will also stand out of the crowd. She is a unique and beautiful young lady.

I wish you all the best.

Posted by: Alaseye on May 22, 2007 09:01 PM

All Hail the Queen. I've waited for this moment for a long time. Zahra, we are all proud and look forward to seeing you do "us" proud. We natural beauties have been suppressed for much too long. Represent the "real" Jamaica!
