Is betrayal a tradition in the Dancehall?

Betrayal in the Dancehall, has this become a tradition? Well, the voice of Dancehall history is certainly saying that this is an established trend. But with this new trend it's becoming more difficult for producers or a well known artiste to lend a helping hand to upcoming artistes

Dating back to the genesis of the genre's high profile, we can recall vividly, Supercat vs. Ninja Man. Supercat is the icon credited with the distinction of giving the Dancehall the 'ever-relevant' gift, the gold teeth, front teeth, gun pon teeth Don-Gorgon. Nevertheless, relations broke down between the then leading DJ's, and reached a bitter end at that infamous 'Sting' of 1991. What took place? Artistes clashed, Supercat got bottled by the audience, and Ninja Man was the new king.

There has been much debate about what was the real cause of the 'split'. But let's leave that. However, the adage 'Kids live what they learn', seem to be a cornerstone in the Dancehall. In more recent times there has been Bounty Killa vs. Vybz Kartel. Without expounding this scenario one could use a quote from Kartel, which sheds a bright light on the topic. During an interview on Entertainment Report, aired on Television Jamaica (TVJ), he responded to a question from host Anthony Miller about his relations with the 'Killa', stating, "A son will not live in his father's house forever. A time will come when the son will move into his own apartment."
Although Vybz Kartel's notion is factual, there are still many who continue to deem his actions a "Judas-like'. Is the Dancehall demanding that once an artiste is a student he should not graduate? This seems to be a harsh reality in the Dancehall arena!

No matter what reason is giving by artistes for wanting to embark on their own mission, it seems the label 'betrayer' always accompany them. If we are to make a list, we would have, Supercat vs. Ninja Man Ninja Man vs. Shabba Ranks, Bounty Killa vs. Merciless, Baby Cham and Vybz Kartel; Beenie Man vs. Don Mafia, and Idonia vs Skatta. .

All that examined, it appears there could be a dramatic change of this 'Dancehall idea'! At Sting 2006 Ninja Man gave Bounty Killa something to think about. While on stage Ninja said, "People! unuh si how Kartel tun roun waa beat Bounty Killa? Well Bounty! If yuh did honour your father that thy days may be long upon the land of the lord thy God yuh wouldn't a get beaten!"
Well, the 'Warlord' seemingly took the rebuke in a good spirit and word now on the street is that he has 'made - up' with his father. Kartel and Bounty reportedly made peace at Dela Splash late last December; and Beenie Man, while ascending the stage at Dancehall Jam Jam last year was heard saying, "Ninja yuh diss mi, but mi naah ansa yuh cause mi respect mi elders."

If this recent trend continues to develop, it could be a very good 'compromise' in a tough arena.

a student should be able to graduate if he pays his dues. kartel deserves his graduation, as a matter of fact he did graduate. but the issue between killa and kartel is not about graduation, is about disrespecting the school u got ure degree, or in the case of kartel masters.

It's all a plot to eradicate each other so they can keep the rich and the poor seperated. The most important thing its a plot so black people can't come together for the common good. Don't take part in the corrupted bullshit that is going on in the world. Make peace and unite trust me then everything will fall in prospective.

One love to all

Its all good when a son wants to move out and embark on is own, but when u move out and start roll with the enemy then something is definately wrong. I respect kartell and i'm a big fan of the warlord ever since i heard him work on top of father binns roof greenwich farm when he was driving a blue charde him just a bust ever since that him batter beenie kick him like a ball lock him turn him on back and beenie man haven't forgotten that he's always trying to get back at killa a use him use kartell against killa even the angel beenie his not sincere. he will go to any extent to see killa fall, listen to him as he was leave the stage at sting (bounty you lose man) and him and killa never clash. U can understand beenie still competition his like that u've been up against this man all your life and can't get the better of him it must be a kick in the teeth still.

Well as the Prophet Capleton once sang in one of his past hit tunes "Music is a mission not a competition nuff man ah use de music ah cause confusion!" You see why they call him the prophet? A years now he said that and look at what is going on in the business? Many of these artistes need to realize that they are the " Role models of the future generation, the ones that they look up to. sometimes they may even have more influence than parents, teachers, preachers and even their friends. so as Tony Rebel said in a song " if you find yourself in the position of influence everytime you use it ,use your conscience for the seed that you so it is no accident and none of you will escape the judgement." So all dancehall artiste take heed, take your responsibility seriously. you will have children too many of you and I am sure you would want to live to see them and you would want to know you have a positive reputation preceeding you. Think about it, all the energies you guys put into the war thing, try to build some positive lyrics to uplift the youths and see how you will change the way the youths think and act and subsequently change the whole community and the universe on a whole. Just a meditation!!

Yow, we need some new talent fi real, 14 yrs bounty and Beenie a war. Same old Situation, if I am in any profession for 14 years and I can't elevate, every year is the same bullshit, I would retire.
Reggae has fallen from being a world renown music to a gimmick, and none of these artist is selling jack!!! People don't let dem fool you, go online and do your research. We need to boycott their shows and let them know we need some music with substance; something edifing and uplifting.
Even Reggae thong... or reggea brief is making a lot more money in the business. Reggae music have no presentation.
So anybody don't like the truth holla at me

I will challenge you with facts, not opinion.
Black people B*mbo cloth wise up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and today the saga continues.

It all comes down to one's perception of gratitude. If one receives a favor from another individual, does that favor put one in debt to that individual forever? Or after one receives the favor and expresses a genuine heartfelt thank you, does the "debt" end there. This whole idea of betrayal comes about due to the fact that most people give to get.If something is given, unless explicitly stated, that gift should be without conditions or undertones.

PEACE

Listen,
If a artiste is good then its not for the "father" to say go on your own but the crowd support thats gonna determine the future of the artiste. Yes a man mus' pay him dues but for how long. At some point an artiste is going to want to test the waters to see how well he can do on his own without the endorsement of the man who bus' him. However it must be done in a way that communicates respect and gratitude to the man who help him out. Even when Papa San get big him neva dis up Sassafras who bus him at that time. Always talk bbout how Sassafras bus him.

i feel as if this is jus a cycle, and if it does not stop dancehall is gonna die jus like hip-hop. we need to stop war and focus on geting our music on the mainstream

Posted by: BloodRun on March 25, 2007 10:37 AM

No disrespect but Capleton is a not a prophet. He's an entertainer like everyone else. And that statement "Music is a mission not a competition" is a blatant lie. Music all about competition. All of these artists had to compete to "buss" into the Reggae and Dancehall industry. They all have to compete to "stay" in it or somebody else will take their spot. Its the same for Hip Hop or any other popular music genre. Music is a business at the end of the day never forget that. Artists don't need to write just positive lyrics only...they need to balance their lyrics and sing/dj about new topics. We've been hearing the same ole topics for almost 15+ years thats what the real problem is in dancehall and reggae. How many songs have we heard about "Selassie"? How many songs have we heard about "war"? How many songs have we heard about "pum pum"? How many songs have we heard about "ganja"? Its time for Reggae and Dancehall to have a renaissance.

Posted by: soulbone on March 25, 2007 02:34 PM

Many of you have some good points, however, I agree with andre and Bloodrun.

Hip-hop died because of the lack of originality, and its inability to move past its current state. In other words, Hip-Hop is no longer evolving. The same can be said for Dancehall (I personally do not say the same thing for reggae. Reggae (in my opinion), is in itself is a seperate entity. Dancehall is, as one artiste said, the "rebellious child of reggae". As Rap is to Hip-Hop.)

Back in the days, artist would clash, however they did it lyrically, and without no type of physical hostilities towards each other. Now, its has become somewhat of a normalcy for an artiste to bring his/her personal life into there music, or for another artist to publicly send death threats to, and/or make attempts on another artist (or person) life becauce of some private disagreement.

Dancehall has reach a state that can make or break the genre: Does it continue to fall into the abyss of hate, or does it move itself to higher level?

The continueous back-stabbing, fighting and lack of real unity in Dancehall will only expediate its destrution.
However, If the artist themselves and the fans can push for a true United Front, and move away from these destructive lyrics of war and killing, then Dancehall can enter into a true Renaissance.

Dancehall needs to evolve to a higher plane of consciousness...

well the industry is set on competition its wat sells artist against artist, the biger djs who had lend a helping hand must by now realised that things are set jus like nature itself. even though u r part of something theres gonna be a time when growth is paramount and so cal for separation. it only will get a way wen one dj a dis another knowing that the dj was the help and visi versa. to me still its a matter of maturity between the man them cause on a wider scale it cost a life more time.

Posted by: gc on March 26, 2007 10:52 AM

bounty's mistake is to think that he can be kartel's boss. kartel is too big to have a boss.

on the other hand joining beenie man's camp is betrayal.

Posted by: cally on March 26, 2007 12:55 PM

so me like fu see d man deal with d thing, good fu hear say bounty and kartel link back and beenie have respect fu d elders.things should be better now.

Posted by: shellie on March 26, 2007 05:14 PM

As how mi see it if a bigger artist give a new comer a helping hand that's good. but don't believe and think that the new comer constantly owe you something. Once they learn what they need to better themselves they going to go. And not because you give them a hand they should always be there to kiss yur ass. They goin to spread there wings some day,and they should give you credit for what you have done for them, but at the same time they don't owe you sh*t.

As for bounty and kartel that was fuck-up,kartel straight out diss killa, thats a diffrent case all by itself.

Posted by: da man on March 26, 2007 10:58 PM

i see no reference or inference to Killa in buju's crazy talk on the bad dog riddim.
On another tip bounty has signed a deal with Vp to release his and an Alliance album. We eagerly await..

gc wa u a talk bout.gc u go in a work place and start work some money u no feel se the boss wa give d work no soppose to act like the boss, i get u him and u de on the same level u fool. u chat too much.put ur self in that position and then u can talk. if u do them tings de fi a man and im come dis u like that wat wud u do. shelly wat u mean se im no owe killa notting.answer this shelly? u him owe the music sumting but no owe killa notting. u stupid f**k.

Posted by: rwarlord11 on March 27, 2007 12:07 PM

Its not a secret that i'm all about the Alliance, but as much as I love and respect the killa I love the industry even more.I know that its time for them to stop the f@*@ry and focust on the music. When I see artist like Sean Paul making waves,it makes you think because he is not half as good as even Assaian, not to mention the three 'B' Bounty,Bennie,Buju.

All I can say is that these artists need fi stop the foolishness, if anyone give a next man a start in the business, why him feel him own him (ex. Bunty and Vybez)? bounty should be happy that the man (Vybez) decide to tek his career to the next level and try on his own. Bunty is a bit too possessive and controlling, him need fi get a grip of himself and mek other ppl strive. Him remind me of those ppl weh will do favors and hold it ova yuh fi eva, I hate that.
Jamaica is now a breeding ground fi voilence, every where yuh turn is negativity - Everybody have summn fi prove, but God have a beaten fi dem yussi.
