it is not funny at all.

Hey, I must admit that I laugh, but one of the most serious pointers in this show is Bounty and Beenie man, haven't we realised that the world is watching us. Because that audience laughed when the guy mention about the two warring factor Bounty and Beenie Man. I think it is time for Beeni man and bounty killer to put aside their differences and work together please I am begging you guys to work it out.

Posted by: Princess on March 15, 2007 02:48 PM

I agree with British, StaceyAnn, Unknown etc. this video IS offensive!

Why is Miss Jamaica an obese, blond hair weve wearing, uneducated unatrractive Aunt Jamima looking character?

Does she represent the many beautiful Jamaican women?

Not even the women in the gheto that this video ridicules look or behave like that.

Why did the Jamaican man have to be a Rasta man? Are most Jamaiacans Rasta? He looked like a cross between a Rasta and a CLOWN!!

Is that the way we as Jamaicans want to be represented in the foreign media? Don't we have enough stereotyping? There is nothing new or funny about this ... its racism... in fact it is old and STUPID!!

As a young attractive, intelligent, slim Jamaican heterosexual Black princess I am OFEFENDED!

Some of unu su fool unu wi let white people spit inna yuh face and tell yuh seh a rain...

Posted by: Akinyele on March 15, 2007 03:19 PM

i disgree with those who say the video is not disrespectful to jamaicans t

the miss jamaica contestant in the video is not someone i would use to respresent us in the miss jamaica pageant.
There is no possible way she would win.
The people are not laughing with us, they are laughing at us.

"and mi cyaa find nuh oxtail and rice and peas no place"

Point in place its the miss universe pageant, the video show cases the kind of people jamaica are, abnoxious, rude, and quick to cuss badwords at people.

Which is false but that is the way the video is depecting jamaicans.

The miss universe pageant is a pageant where the country sends someone to respresent the country.

The video was made and put on the internet to show to the world that jamaicans are ignorant and rude.

The host did not diss jamaicans

They are not laughing with us they are laughing at us.

I agree it is very disrespectful.

Man - maxine what would you do if you became ms universe.

(maxine cannot speak standard english)

Maxine - (kisses her teeth) let me tell you something right this contest a one eddiat business, dem a surround me with a bnch a mawga mawga white gyal who naw eat nutten but ratid salad and mi cyaa find nuh oxtail nor nuh rice and peas no place

To a jamaican wo understand it seems a joke but to someone viewing who does not speak jamaican, they are looking at the (size of the woman sent to the miss universe pagent, she cannot even speak standard english, and she gets ignorant when ask a simple question.)

they are not laughing with us, they are laughing at us.

the video is placed on the internet to give those who know nothing the impression that jamaicans get ignorant, arogant and stupid, when asked a simple question.

Posted by: Akinyele on March 15, 2007 03:43 PM

"and mi tired of this ediat bl**dclat white boy weh a ask mi, mi business, yu fi tell him fi gwey"

If this video was done on the street, (outside of the miss universe pageant) and the white man was trying to pick up on maxine even when maxine said "in standard english" i am not interested

and the white man persisted, and she then got upset. it would be different.

The video is the miss universe pageant and the white man (representing white people) asked a simple question, and maxine who is representing jamaicans "gets ignorant, rude and starts to diss and curse"

The video is typical racists sending a message out to those who have never been to jamaica to know otherwise.

I while i was in school in florida, a white boy said he thought the jamaican airport was a ganja field and that when air jamaica landed , black people came up to the plane selling weed when the door opened. He also thought jamaicans lived in trees.

Right now jamaica is hosting the world cup cricket, some people are racist and do not like that jamaica is moving forward in the worlds eye.

Those people make videos like these to paint a picture for people who dont know anything about jamaica, that jamaicans are stupid and ignorant.

The miss universe concept highlights just how ignorant jamaicans are, even at the miss universe show they are rude.

thats the picture the creator of the video is painting.
and those who know nothing about jamaica and its culture are laughing at us.

I find it very disrespectful, i have to deal with these people in business.

Videos like these highlight jamaica in a bad way for people who dont know anything about jamaica, and when i deal with those people they have a preconception that i am going to be like maxine.

Videos like these are made to depict jamaicans in a bad light, rude ignorant, quick fi cuss bad words, and diss white people, when asked a simple question.

They are laughing at us, how stupid and ignorant maine behaves when asked a question.

at first it seems like she is black and proud and is confident enough to stand up there.

Then the disrespecting jamaicans starts

Posted by: Deandre x on March 15, 2007 04:02 PM

it is funny when we do it to ourselves but very disrespectful when done by people from other nations, it like being called a NIGGER by a white person jamaicans will think it is funny but the rest of the world will that we are all a bunch of fat black ugly and delinquent people who are deprived of education. Smart people use a term called a subliminal message to hide what they are really saying and if you are not aware they will dis you to your face without you realising it. People who think it is not disrespectful fell right into the trap. They think thats how we really are, they are not really laughing with us they are actually laughting at all jamaicans.

(come on people wake up)

Posted by: jahmar rose on March 15, 2007 04:25 PM

this video clip is a flop.

Some parts funny some noh funny...but yow if yo naaah mek suppm funnier stop talk. Whoever is trying to Diss Jamaicans, and whoever takes this for anything serious is completely ignorant, because Jamaica has won Ms World multiple times...people calm dow if you are not going to contribute by creating a skit or film that is representing the part of Jamaica that you want to represent-then stop complaining-the again u have a right to compain. Wateva as I said some of it was creative and funny but some parts were corney.

Posted by: toya on March 15, 2007 06:03 PM

I don't care if anybody want to call me gay.... but my point still stands.... this video is offensive and disrespectful.... do yáll realise how they look at us Jamaicans? no wonder they say the best way to hide anything from us is to hide it in a book. Jeez!

Posted by: Trilogy on March 15, 2007 06:04 PM

To those who are stating this is a view of the utmost disrespect and to those who view this as the "white man" perpetuating stereotypes, I will advise this was done by a Black man, who had his own show in Canada, and is Jamaican. So, this had nothing to do with "white people." On that a white man was playing the host. He was the only White man they had the whole time.

Just a heads up.

I personally think that this was funny. I can see how people reading into to this can say that there are elements of generalization, prejudice, racism etc .. The bottom line is this is humour and that usually includes over exaggeration, it is not intended to be politically correct, nor a true depiction of the subject at hand the object of the game is to be entertaining and get people to laugh and in that regard it served it purpose. Humour is also sometimes at the expense of someone else and in this case it was at the expense of Jamaica and Jamaicans. I think we as Jamaicans need to hold ourselves to a higher standard before we do that for outsiders. We do not collectively treat each other with respect and high regard and as a result we have all these other social issues that we need to collectively work to solve. We should all be offended when we have a corrupt political system that is easily infiltrated; We should be offended when our entertainers air their dirty laundry in public and show no diginity or professionalism or respectability with regards to our culture and music. We should be offended when Jamaica is statistically the 3rd most murderous country in the World. We should be offended when our judicial system is lacking, We should be offended when most of the citizens of Jamaica are living a substandard lifestyle and some still in substandard housing. We should be very very offended when those elected by the people are so eager to make Jamaica an haven for visitors and seem to not care if the average Jamaican citizen lives in extreme impoverished conditions. My friends there are a host of things us proud, dignified Jamaicans should be offended by and we simply turn a blind eye. I think there are a host of things we should be vocal about and express our disgust but we pretend those things are not there. Lets take the video with a grain of salt it is humor after all ......and there are plenty other things that we should be getting really excited about and we are not.

Posted by: pressa on March 15, 2007 11:19 PM

I thought that was very funny, you guys need to lighten up a bit. It's all for laughs, Where is your sense of humor?

Posted by: Chin on March 16, 2007 09:23 AM

Actually this video is a part of a comedy sketch that takes place in Toronto, Ontario. It's a predominantly black cast of mixed cultures. Now with that said, it can be looked at as a "Stereotypical view of Jamaican's", but with that said comedy doesn't have any boundaries. As we all know many other cultures are intrigued by the Jamaican culture and our way of living. This is a part of our culture and it's ok to look at ourselves and laugh. There not trying to say that this is all Jamaica is about, there just merely doing a comedy sketch. If anyone really knows about Toronto, they would know that it's very diverse in culture and ethnicity and the mass majority of people who that comedy show is targeted too are people from the Islands. For those people who have a problem with it, maybe you’re the one that is humiliated by your culture?

My gosh people, lighten up. It funny, very funny.
Look how many satirical movies have been made out there about blacks, white, jews, arabs etc.

Also there are lots of Jamaican plays in theatres in JA with similar types of humor.
It is not insulting at all.

Posted by: AKinyele on March 16, 2007 12:54 PM

That video is not humor it is racism. Laugh at that as a jamaican and you are laughing at yourself.
My point still stands, the video was made by someone to depict jamaicans in a bad light to those who know nothing about jamaicans.

RACISM

Posted by: AKinyele on March 16, 2007 01:03 PM
For those people who have a problem with it, maybe you’re the one that is humiliated by your culture?
This is exactly my point, when someone is going to believe that the woman in the video is representing jamaican culture.

Ms Chin, that is not my culture. Women in jamaica do not behave like that when a man asks them a simple question.

I gotto deal with people like you who know nothing about jamaica everyday and who use racist stereotype video's to judge jamaicans.

Chin you know nothing about jamaican culture.

racist stereotype video's like these paint jamaicans in a bad light. It is very disrespectful .

Posted by: topadtop on March 16, 2007 01:39 PM

Mi have a question . If a did some Jamaicans do dis in Jamaica , would we consider dis disrespectful ? or , if it was pure white people do it what would be the response ? Lol . The two side have some good points though , as for me ? Mi still a gwaan read . Mi soo chime een though and as usual whe eva mi seh a dat mi mean, cause all of a sudden mi si seh some regulars a start to do them best fi sound politically correct . Free up unnuh self man( or woman), no friad a nobody , this a di internet, no body caa drape you up. Lol .

[quote-topadtop]Mi have a question . If a did some Jamaicans do dis in Jamaica , would we consider dis disrespectful ?
Topa its not jamaicans doing it. As a jamaican i would not use the concept of the jamaican woman (in the miss universe pageant) behaving like a jackass when the anouncer asked her what she would do if she won.

Some may find it funny, i don't. I am born and live in jamaica and now I am looking at the video as a if i were a person who knows nothing about jamaica and jamaicans culture. Only what they read and see on the internet.

The video makes jamaicans seem unintelligent and ugly.

Chin made this comment

[quote-Chinn]you're the one that is humiliated by your culture?
I rest my case.

If this was shown on CVM or TVJ and it was Jamaicans making fun of us then maybe jus maybe I would consider this funny (because me a Jamaican an mi feel a yaad ppl alone fi mek joke a me an mi peeps) but being that it was yankee ppl a mek fun a Jamaicans mi naah laugh!..This video is suppose to be showing how Jamaicans "act" and mi sure kno seh a nuh so all a we females act so dem can gwaan wid dat. Mi dun seh it nuh funny an mi naah tek back mi talk. All who want dis me chu mi nuh think it funny unuh can gwaan rub out di key dem pon unuh keyboard cause wadeva unuh type naah go affect me!.
Black Americans dont feel disrespected when other Blacks call them a "nigger" or "nigga" but as soon as a White person seh it den u kno a different ting. Same so me feel (except fi di nigger part...mi still nuh indulge ppl an da word deh)
How I see it is di video a try seh, we nuh know standard english, we foul mouthed, dress bad, and gluttonous and as well ignorant. You see how she start cuss when the host asks her a simple question???? come on yo...cant believe nuff a unuh a support da video yah!
Another ting, Why is it dat di only other Jamaican there jus had to be a rastaman??? yea mi kno when ppl think of Jamaica dem picture rasta, weed and beautful beaches but come on...unuh well an kno seh rasta nuh get dat much ratings a yard, a jus now ppl really a give di rastaman a bly an not even to a full extent. WHATS SO OFFENSIVE ABOUT THIS. SHOULD SHE BE HALF WHITE OR HALF INDIAN OR HALF CHINESE LIKE MOST OF THE GIRLS THAT JAMAICA USE TO SEND TO THE MISS UNIVERSE. ITS COMEDY AND ITS FUNNY. I CANT SEE HOW PEOPLE WOULD THINK ITS OFFENSIVE TO LOOK LIKE THE MAJORITY OF JAMAICAN WOMEN. PEOPLE CHECK YOURSELVES. AT LEAST THE WOMAN NOT STARVING HERSLEF TO DEATH. GO DEH GAL

Posted by: Hawk on March 17, 2007 12:37 AM

My God!!! People lighten up! It is a joke! I mean look at all the shows that have come on tv and Stereotyped blacks, whites, shoot, everybody on this planet.

If anything, it shows that Jamaicans are unique (not in this way, not the stereotype), But as a culture that stands out, that does not follow any other country. A PROUD NATION!!!

I personally know what, and how Jamaican women are. Jamaican women are some of the most BEAUTIFULLEST women on this earth! How did Buju say it: LOVE DEM LIKE HOW THE PIPER LOVE HIM FLUTE! I would neva look at the woman in this clip and take her as a true representation of a Jamaican woman... Jamaican Women are Unique!!! AH DEM WOMEN MI WAH! FORWARD TO ALL OF BEAUTIFULL WOMEN FROM JAMAICA!!! LOVE DEM LIKE NO OTHER!!!!

i agree with staceyann it good to see people still have a sense of humor the video it fu fu funny it make mi lol see u please out''''/

Posted by: Da Man on March 17, 2007 12:44 PM

It is stereotypical but humorous. I, for one am not really offended by it because that is what comedy is all about. Stereotypes. But consider this, what if the girl was a well spoken pretty hair browning (as most Miss Jamaicas are). 1. Would it be funny?
Few. Would that be a more typical representation of the Jamaican woman?

Posted by: topadtop on March 17, 2007 01:05 PM

Yes "Akinyele" mi jus a ask some questions though ,it was not a point of view . Mi just waa see weh people think if a we a make joke afta wi self . Thanks fi clear dat up though . Anyway mi ready fi say whe mi tink now .Sorry fi the lenght but here goes . Nothing about this video surprise me . A U.S.A. mi live, an a dem type a stereotype deh mi affi deal wid all di time . Every movie weh dem have a socalled Jamaican inna, is a fake rasta dem use fi portray wi . That might be because of BOB MARLEY , because a him was the face of Jamaica to most of de international community . Also, most a di American youth dem weh mi kwow, tink seh Jamaican woman real agressive an ready fi war dem if dem dis . Dem assume seh wi caa speak English an dat most a wi nuh have no real educational back ground . So me constantly and consistently affi a educate dem pon all aspects a Jamaican culture . Why me do dat ? Because mi hope seh if mi change one person perception they might tell someone else di real ting too. Is not because mi worry weh people tink bout mi country but di fact is, wi live in a world weh wid adda counrties so some time people views of you might determine how dem treat you ( mi nuh naive ). So annuh nutten new bout dis . Look how de Wayans Bros. did mek joke affa Shabba and have it fi seh all Jamaicans work four and five job at a time , look pan di Steven Segal movie . So as fi dis one, mi watch it an know seh you affi be a bit concerned a who a see dis and how much new cultures agguh assume seh a so all a wi stay . Dis deh pon deh internet so a world wide ting dis . Mi naa support dah one yah but at di same time mi naa lose nuh sleep ova it . Its not because she is a fat.

its her behaviour when the man ask her "what she would do if she won"

The video is potraying jamaicans / jamaican females to seem unintelligent and ignorant when asked a simple question.

That is why the video is disrespectful to jamaicans .

topadtop beautiful point .. We must lead by example and make sure everytime we get an opportunity to dispel some of these misconceptions about Jamaica and Jamaicans we make good use of those opportunities. But some of us make if very difficult for the rest of us and we must acknowledge that fact and deal with it.

Truth thanks for the compliment.........

[QUOTE-topadtop]Nothing about this video surprise me . A U.S.A. mi live, an a dem type a stereotype deh mi affi deal wid all di time . Videos like this one not helping, its made to put jamaicans in a bad light to the world. The woman in the vide a cuss white people and a call him batty boy when he simple asked her a question.

THAT IS NOT JAMAICAN, THAT IS DISRESPECT TO JAMAICA. JAMAICAN WOAMN NUH BEHAVE DEM WAY DEH.

The creator made the video to make people who know nothing about jamaica beleive that, the females behave unintelligent and ignorant.

THAT IS THE SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE HIDDEN IN THE VIDEO.

Respect fi Akinyele & Petagaye28 fi di positive feedback . Mi glad seh people a see through the smoke screen and know seh tings are not always what they seem . Wi affi read between the lines and think outside the box . When we see transgressions against wi country , wi have to speak out against it , no matta wha form them waa send it inna . Whether comical , theatrical , political ,subliminal, unintentional or intentional wi affi pick up on it fast an mek dem know seh even if wi nuh inna a position fi do nutten bout it but wi wise to it .Wi might caa move the mountian but wi caa push little a di dirt from di bottom and hope seh di person weh come behind wi will push weh a little too an if dat continue guess wha , one day name day di mountian wiil become nothing but a little mole hill. A constant drip of water will cut hole inna a stone . So no disrespect to di people weh see it as a laughing matta but a hope the next time you walk into a store anyweh inna di world an somebody hear you accent and ask you where you from and you proudly proclaim seh you a Jamaican and dem ask you if you know weh dem can get some weed, a hope you can laugh bout da one deh too .

______________

Trey anthony is the name of the woman in the video.

She is not jamaican she did the video to appear funny to some, and disrespect jamaicans using that disrespectul video. Potraying jamaicans to be ignorant, stupid people with no sense, which is false.

Guys calm down take a break its just comedy, if you can't laugh at yourself then you are taking life too serious. Yes as a people we are exploited at times, but the only ones who get the joke or even understand it are Jamaicans. As a Jamaican I watched multicultural TV shows that communicates in another language other than English, they poke fun at their culture and if I get the joke I laugh if I don't I switch to another channel. I don't think for a second the creator of the skit had intended for anyone other than Jamaicans or people who understand some Jamaican culture to enjoy it. When Eddie Murphy poked fun at Bob Marley, buck wheat..... on SNL we all laughed and look at him today. I think this will open doors for the guys who created this skit not because they poke fun at Jamaican culture but because they demonstrated exceptional comical writing skills and some good acting. We can interprit anything we see and draw negativity from it but the opposite is also true. My message to those who are loosing their mind over this piece is " have a coke and a smile and shut the hell up" I have a bigger problem with the crap that Beanie Man and Bounty killer is useing their God given talent to produce and I don't hear you all talking about that. They should be happy they are blessed with such talent, and look at the destruction they use it to produce in their selfish, egotistical self promoting garbage. Can we honestly defend the fact that some of us Jamaicans aren't ignorant and uneducated and will use any public forum to demonstrate it? I love Jamaica and all Jamaicans but come guys if we are gonna be critical lets be realistic in our approach or we will end up building the very thing we sought to destroy......Peace.

Posted by: Akinyele on March 19, 2007 12:47 PM

The video is not respresenting any jamaican female that i know. That vido is potraying to the world that jamaican females are ignorant and stupid with no sense at all. That is false.

Posted by: Akinyele on March 19, 2007 02:47 PM

I disagree. that is not comedy. if she makes hundreds of video's under different theme's portraying jamaicans to be unintelligent. That hurts the jamaican image.

Someone i heard call it the lobster in cold water technique. By the time the effect of the video is found out, the lobster done cook already. or the damage already done.

Not being naive this video portrays jamaicans to seem like unintelligent and stupid people who disrespect people of different cultures without a cause. This is a false representation of a jamaican.

When more and more video like these are made and posted on the internet it hurts jamaicas image and it is very disrespectful to all jamaicans who will feel the effects of it when they travel in the way the world treats them.

I dont dig this! I diss it! No ratings to Jamaica! Afta we no backward!

Posted by: Da Man on March 20, 2007 10:58 AM

No one can disrespect jamaicans as much as we disrespect ourselves. Whatever reputation we have, "yard or broad", we contributed greatly to it.Killing each other every single day, being involved in the worst possible crimes, drug dealing and the list goes on. Now don't get me wrong, i'm not saying all Jamaicans are this way. All i'm saying is those are the Jamaicans that make the news. Look at it though,.. In the end, does that one likkle skit INFLUENCE anybody's opinion of us ?......
OR... does it REFLECT it?.....
Think about that...

Posted by: Hawk on March 20, 2007 09:34 PM

Da Man has a point...

Posted by: Da Man on March 21, 2007 02:07 AM

To further illustrate my point. Have you ever been on a plane with Jamaicans and other nationalities? Who have the biggest mouth and loudest talk? Jamaicans! Worse if its plane with some ICI (higglers) a come fram shappin.
Next ting, apart fram americans, who have the highest amount a people in usa prison?
My point, even tho extreme, is this. The hard working, educated, humble jamaicans go about their bizniz quietly trying to make something of their lives, while the butu, tiefing, drug smuggling murdaring one dem get demself inna trouble, get pan de news and mek de whole world tink seh a so all jamaican stay. Those are the people at whom ur anger should be directed. All a unu whe have unu drug dealing relative a farin a send tings come gi unu an unu gladly accept it even tho unu know seh a blood money buy it! Start wid di man inna di mirror before we cuss people fi a portray we in an
image whe we create pan weself....

mad so

Posted by: Jean Paul on March 24, 2007 04:14 PM

Well I must say this is quite interesting...My name is Jean Paul a born Trinidadian and I wrote this sketch. I never thought it would cause this much discussion but hey everyone is entitled to an opinion. I wrote it because I was tired of the standard of beauty they were presenting at Miss Universe shows and the way the Island contestants always spoke so phonetically proper. I wanted to show that full size women who speak heavy "patois" were just as beautiful. Now you should also remember that this was a COMEDY sketch meant to be FUNNY. Hence the reason Miss Zimbabwe was white-meant to be funny, Miss Jamaica's dancehall queen outfit-meant to be funny, accent so strong that she needed an interpreter-meant to be funny. Now most of you seem to be taking this out of context and I don't think anyone was this mad when In Living Color butchered the Jamaican accent and we heard bloodclot on tv for the first time or when Shottas came out and not only needed subtitles but portrayed Jamaicans as violent gun toting drug dealers. I'm proud of my people and my culture and my region, from how we talk,to what we eat,to even how we dress. If I'm not allowed to poke fun at "us" then we have become just as stoosh as the ignorant people who try to tell us what is funny and what to like. I say Lava bun anybody that tries to supress what YOU believe and Big up to the West Indies cricket team doing big things at the World Cup...Who Jah Bless

ah ah it is damn funny to me and to a lot of people but then it looked as if us jamaicans dont understand english but since we all kow that we do then who cares it is so freaking fun,wi caa seh n e ting to adda people an dem nuh nuw weh wi a seh mi do it all di time

Posted by: lee lee on March 28, 2007 08:27 PM

I'm not joining the discussion just askin;... Isnt it funny that the same ppl who are complaining about the "weave wearing, ghetto, fat woman" as a stereotype are tryin to prove another stereotype of the skinny browning with long straight hair down her back representing us at pageants.. if she was Lisa Hanna-esque would y'all still be offended? Maybe if Jamaicans didnt behave like "Yardies" noboody would be interesed in our culture.. You think people are interested in the man who live uptown and drive him Benz or Lexxus and speak the acrolect or are they interested in the "renta dread" who litters his speech with Bumbo claat and yes man.. Im not saying its right, but that's part of what makes us who we are.. Miss Lou woulda tell unnu if she was here...

Posted by: Don on May 31, 2007 04:57 PM

As a Jamaican living New York, I wonder what the fuss is about. Speaking of Miss Lou, she frequently made fun of white people in her jokes. So they (foreigners) can't make a joke at our expense? People the real issue is not some comedy sketch. Its the disparity between rich and poor, white and black.
Just as we can make fun of other people lets relax and have a laugh at ourselves. Too many of us don't want to recognise just how pluralistic Jamaica is. And as soon as we see an image that does not meet our "ideal", we are offended.
By the way, just want to big up the real Miss Jamaica Universe this year. She was totally beautiful. From her dreadlocks to her toes.
