Ziggy Marley's win at the Grammy awards made it four
And the Grammy Award for The Best Reggae Album goes to Ziggy Marley
Love Is My Religion hurled Ziggy Marley to the top reggae spot in the 49th annual Grammy awards show held at Los Angels' Staples Center on February 11, 2007.
Introduced as a Grammy category in 1985, the category of Best Reggae Album had a roster of the industry's' finest up for 2007 awards. Ziggy's triumph this year comes as the 4th such honour for him, as he walked down the Grammy Award winning road before in 1988, 1989 and 1997.
Also nominated for the 2007 award were: Buju Banton for "Too Bad," Matisyahu with his album "Youth," Sly and Robbie's "Rhythm Doubles," and UB40's "Who You Fighting For."
Never to be worn out is the old adage - love conquers all. So we join Ziggy and his father Bob Marley in encouraging the manifestation of this very sound message of love worldwide. Congratulations to you Ziggy Marley for the win and big up as well to all 2007 nominees.

What the bl**dclaat. I admit I bought that Love is my religion album and it was not that great. I
think he is trying too hard to sound like ben harper. Ziggy has not made a really good album in
10 years. Buju should have won. Buju has had the number 1 tune in ja for almost two months. Does Ziggy even do shows in jamaica?

Ziggy's music is a powerful music. It's not the name that won. Why are jamaicans all hatin' on the marley name? Come on, if you put buju's song on american tv nobody the majority wouldn't understand one damn word he says. And (Ras), buju being #1 in JA for 2 months doesn't not win an artist a grammy just for that, because reggae is world music. Congrats ziggy.

See stephen come out with his album fe next year.
Well, real reggae artists, just know that its obvious that you dont need a grammy to showcase your talent.
Even Sly and Robbie deserve it over Ziggy, please.
Dang, even Matisyahu.

Ziggy is NOT a Rasta , he is a Hippy... He does NOT do REggae he does ROCK and WORLD music...
We CAN NOT expect much from these American Awards or place any value on them... OBVIOUSLY the people who voted DO NOT have the same taste as us here in JAMAICA... and JAMAICA is the birth place and the Mecca of REGGAE so IT is up to us to set the standard... and us JAMAICANS know that the BUJU album did SELL OFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!

Bottom-Line...Grammy people don't know about reggae, they only go by pop music. They should have a carribean panel when it comes to judging reggae music. Big ups to all of the Marleys still...Reggae big world wide but the Grammy freaks make it seem like it's still a small category!

i love the marley's but this cd by ziggy was pure garbage. i can understand jr. gong winning his two, and i hope ragga's cd is up for grammy in 08 but trust me ziggy did not deserve this one.
this was buju's year. if the grammy voters knew much about reggae and buju's comeback story they would never vote marley. sh*t even matisyayu album is better. anyway buju is the people's champ so whatever.

At least Matisyahu didn't win... Tanya Stephens had one of the best album by far for '06. Buju's album is very good as well. Our music is overshadowed by all the drama and that is why the Marley family will always win, no matter what kind of crap they put out. The Grammy people feel safe nominating and voting for them... when last yuh hear se Ziggy ina some mix-up???

If you look to the grammys you would think only the Marleys and UB40 are making reggae music. Fire bun UB40 dat pure p**ssyhole pop music. Where Morgan Heritage, Sizzla, Tanya Stevens, and Gyption. Fire bun the grammys becuase on the street Buju a run tings!!! Driva!!

One of the main reasons that Ziggy won is because he's more marketable to the mainstream. He carries the Marley name and his album was pure fluff. Buju told the truth and is still judged by his past... It's a bunch of shit. The grammies suck and obviously good music hardly ever wins. Reggae that really speaks for the people will be in the shadows of this fluff (also the likes of Sean Paul, Matisyahu, UB40, etc) because of the brainless masses that rule the world......Fya pon Babylon!!!

Big up to Ziggy regardless. The messages in his album deserve and needs to to be recognized. The fact that the album was done independently and that he had control over creative rights in the process is extraordinary. No one seems to recognize that this album was finally the manifestation of his father's destiny, which is to make music from the heart, raw, without it being analyzed and changed by labels and record companies; completely independent. Of course where there is love there is hate and there will always be haters. Those of you who think that Ziggy is so much different than his brothers know nothing about the family bond. Have you seen the video clip for 'traffic jam?' All of them in it; they have always been working together as a family and that's why they have been and will continue to be successful. I predict right now that STEPHEN WILL WIN THE GRAMMY IN 08. People don't like change either. People expect Ziggy to be 'like this' or 'like that'. True musicians and artists know about putting your heart and soul on a record and for people to reject it. For trying to be an individual and not being afraid to go against the grain in a music industry filled with commercialism. Compared to Ziggy's first solo album this was 10 times better. People criticized the last Melody Makers album for its blues/folk sound but think about it folks, the man has been doing the same roots reggae music for how long? It is time that he does what he feels that he wants to do as a mucisian. If he can win an award for doing what EVERY musician wants to do I say bravo.. congratulations. You stuck your neck out there and deserve the recognition.
I do agree that as a whole the Grammys are skewed in that there are too many artits and categories that don't get recognition, but that's just the way that the academy is set up. The fact of the matter is that Reggae music has and deserves it's own awards format, much like Latin Grammys, Dove awards for Gospel music, Country Music Awards, etc. Sure there are lots of better albums out there and hopefully with the help of artists like Stephen, Damien, Shaggy, Sean Paul they can continue to bring reggae more to the forefront. You got to admit things are alot further along than they were 10 years ago in reggae music. Nothing really against Buju but I really think his anti-gay stance has really stunted his career but honestly, he did it to himself.
Shame on you Jamaicans who bad-talk and cast judgement on your own son because he wants to follow in his father's footsteps. You should be extremely proud. Small minded mentality gets you nowhere but looking behind and licking your own tail while others move forward. If you think that reggae music is only for Jamaicans or for people of the Caribbean then look around you.
One Love, Peace.

Jah Kno seh the sense of disappointment nuh really leave me yet, having checked the net which revealed Ziggy's win in the Reggae category of the grammy's last weekend. But to a little extent I was not really surprized. As many have echoed before me, the Marley name is a potent force in the judging of reggae music...and it seems whatever they touch or put out, is golden in the eyes of their foreign critics. Now don't get me wrong, Junior Gong's win was well deserved....and none can dispute that here or abroad. But who really is Ziggy, in the reggae circuit? Does Ziggy even think his own music is reggae anymore? It's unfortunate that the belly from which the 'regae" we speak of is so disgruntled that Ziggy's award is so undeserved, but like others I must echo the same sentiments....it is undeserved. When compared to the other memebers of the Grammy nominated category....Ziggy just never measured up. I think it's about time the individual who determine the winners in this category, make an attempt to get a feel of what the real reggae critics are saying, coz I'm sure none would say Ziggy over Buju.
As for Buju, let not this act of bias deter you from making good music...your family loves you and the rest of Jamaica sits patiently awaiting your utterances, coz it is from ur words that we get a true feel of what reggae music fused with dancehall is all about.
Big ups to JuJu Banton, the next big ting outta di Gargamel camp.

CoolPoet,
Shame on YOU for judging Jamaicans!! What does Buju's beliefs have anything to do with the grammys???
Furthermore just because someone disagrees with something DOES NOT mean that they are ANTI that particular thing.
Your thoughts are typical of most Europeans & Americans and are rife with cultural imperialism...
In Jamaica homosexualiy goes against the culture, traditions and even the law... so Buju's views are simply a reflection of Jamaican culture...
I wonder what Bob Marley thought about gays? Well as a devout Rastafarian I am sure he was AGAINST it!
ANYWAY, the people HAVE SPOKEN, the grammys should have gone to BUJU!!!

Well personally, the general consensus is that the people have spoken. Buju should have won. No disrespect to Ziggy. But, I too, am disappointed with the Ziggy's win, especially in the Grammy nominated category, in my opinion Ziggy just never measured up. However, we must remember that because of some of Buju's anti-gay music (for which I am not NOT against), and considering that the panel of judges are perhaps, mostly gays and/or influenced by them, no matter how good his music is - this is just their way of not acknowledging this musical talents. But Buju, we love your music - continue to fire bun dem out, you sell off - you nuh need nuh Grammy fi validate you. DRIVAAAAAAAA - DON'T STOP AT ALL.

I am truly sorry I did not get to comment on this article earlier, however he is my two cents.Personally I am disappointed that Ziggy got the Grammy given the amount of other great reggea albums out there. Living outside of Jamaica and an avid follower of the reggae music let me assure those supporters of Ziggy that his album although arguable a great achievement iwas not as well supported as you might be lead to believe. In fact most disc jocks on internet radio is quite upset he got the grammy. Ziggy if he is truly as independent as he projects himself to be should use the Marley influence responsibly and ensure that this travesty does not reoccur in the future.

First big up to Buju for all the good music he has made all over the years. I think he really deserved this price because of all his efforts he has made for Reggae Music. He really struggeled a lot the last years because of one song (Boom Bye Bye) he did. But remember you can´t keep a good man down.
In the peoples minds Buju is the secret winner, but nevertheless i´am really happy for Ziggy´s win. We don´t have to dis Ziggy, we have to be happy a jamaican win this award. It´s all about good reggae music so don´t fight it. One love !!!

Buju Banton has some deep and true lyrics to his songs. One can not expect Americans that do not care about one other then themselves and money to truly care about what is being said in a song Do you? The only thing they care about is $$$$ signs, other than that it doesn't matter to them what you feel, u barely exsist to them. If you really want to know the truth

The grammy awards commitee should be shot draged resurectted then hung and then there kids should be shot and draged for their crimes against reggae music. First of to those who don't know Buju was the biggest name since Bob, and the first Jamaican to outsell Bob on Jamaica and in foreign. You guys have given beenie and bounty killa grammy awards and they are not as great as the gargamel as if please.
For you to not give that award to buju shows you know nothing about reggae. Could you guys please stop PRETENDING that you know anything about reggae. It just gawls me that you are bias maybe because of the boom bye bye song or maybe the marley name. Lets be real junior gong is good but who is ziggy marley to buju banton. We clearly need a separate carribean system from you guys. We all know that from stamina daddy-mr mention-till shiloh so on to the too bad album gargame has remained the constant rocker of the dancehall; you guys just upset me.
