While I like the song Brown Skin and I know that it was his girl friend that inspired it, the song seeks to perpetuate the division between the mulattos and the full negros. Hence the manifestation of bleaching. We have to be more conscious as artists as people take their cue from the industry believe it or not

Brown Skin is a hot song, and I wish Richie all the best, but we have to keep it real. The skin color thing is a big issue within society, and we as Black people tend to associate beauty with women of lighter complexion. (It is sad but it is the truth.)

So wait...noh him same one did ah sing song bout "Black like a tar" and now him tun round ah sing song bout brown skin? (Correct me if I'm wrong) But I think this is a HUGE CONTRADICTION & IT IS HYPOCRACY! I love Richie Spices' songs and mi rate him as a reggae artiste but I am a little dissapointed by this major contradiction.

As far back in time as you can go, you will see that every thing that was taught to us about being black was associated with being bad. as the saying goes, the more things change the more they remain the same.In todays society, you would figure we as a people would love one's self, understand one's self, and appreciate one's self. I totally agree with Rashona, and she is not stupid, check yourself.I also agree with Davina too...BLESS.

To stop all this confusion about what Richie Spice is really talking about, why don't we just ask him ourselves? What does he mean by "brown skin" in his song? It seems like a lot of you are unsure. Let me help you out so you can make your own conclusion.
Brown skin or "brownin" in Jamaica means: of light skin/fair skinned/light complexion/ light brown skin/"red bone"/ opposite of dark skinned.
Brown skin anywhere else means anything but white skin in whatever shade or hue. ie. coloured
So it can be concluded that since Richie Spice is a Jamaican and Jamaicans use the word brown in that context, his song is about a woman who has light brown skin.
I hope this helps. Maybe you guys should read the lyrics and watch the video and you will see. Either that or ask Richie yourself next time you see him. :)

I love Richie Spice but was very disappointed the first time I heard this song. Contrary to a lot of the rationalizations presented here, being a Jamaican, his use of the term "Brown Skin" refers to a shade somewhere between black and white with the emphasis being on "not black". We can fool ourselves all we want about how being brown is just another shade of black but, the truth is that being brown is NEVER used in that context in Jamaica. I'm disappointed with Richie because he is a Ras and a Ras is suppose to foster the positive attributes of the Black Empress (emphasis on Black as used in Jamaica). No matter how educated we are, we still yield to how we were conditioned; the lighter complected women are ideal for marriage but the darker complected women are relegated to being sex symbols.
Have you ever seen a Reggae or Rap video with a lighter complected woman gyrating and displaying her self in a sexual manner? Usually it is the darker complected woman that gets that part. The lighter complected women are given parts playing the snob or the professional. The black ones are given parts where they shake their money maker. As Black Men, we are doing exactly what Backra used to do to our women; the darker ones are nothing more than sex objects.

Richie Spice is awesome I cant get enough of his songs even though I play them every chance I get.
One thing we must realize Richie is free to call upon a "brown skin" girl if he wishes whats the problem? All negroes are various shades of brown
when you find a BLACK one let me know. You do know that black is the colour of a blackboard,
black shoes, black velvet etc. is there a human being with that color - lets be realistic Richie is very dark and I am sure he loves all the Nubian sisters regardless OF the shade of brown.
PLEASE DONT MAKE A BIG DEAL ABOUT NOTHING

I find the negative comments regarding this single "brown Skin" very amusing. the man is a musician and music is the spirit of life, music has no boundaries and it is a modern form of teachings dating back to the time of jesus christ.
A musician is an artist and a teacher, he has the talent to look at everything in a positive light as well as acknowledging and mentioning the negatives, what i love about these new generations of artist like richie spice is that they are no way singing with a slavery mentality. music has no colour and when a indvidual critises a song because they percieve it is degratory to another colour "GET A LIFE" and stop being so insecure about your complexion and if u dont like it go and listen to fifty cents.

I think personally this tune is fuckres...it's bad enough that white man are ramming the 'white/lighter skin mentality'down our throats, but it's even worse when it comes from our black men. especially at the fact that he's suppose to be a rastaman, black women/man are already using harmful bleaching products because of hatred of their beautiful black skin. ALL women of color are beautiful and i think that considering the history of colorism in our race he should of been more conscious of what he is saying (as a rastaman) and the damage that he is causing.

It's all clear to me when he says in his lyric "brown skin perfect combination"... but to me there is nothing bad with this. Richie is "Proud of being black" as his Black Like a Tar song says. We have to deal with this, it seems like Spice proudly accepts that he is black but he is more attractive to brown skin girls. Hey, Im black, and believe me, brown girls are also sexy... this means black girls are sexy.
