Six questions with Diana King - "I wrote songs for myself"

Diana-King-Reggae-Jamaica.jpgFirst job: Singing and dancing with the group Niko Blanco

Favourite colour: Red

Favourite song: 'No Fear'. It deals with fear, the fact that so many people have fears, my biggest fear is flying. It's about that bellyache, that nervous feeling you have all the time, yu see the years ah go by and nothing nah gwaan fi yu, is fear...fear of failing, people saying yu caan do that. I wrote songs for myself, and for others who feel like dat because is the worst ting. Many people have it and don't know...fear to stay where you are, and not go anywhere.

What she smokes: Natural American Spirits. When I was in Jamaica, I used to smoke Matterhorns. Now, my poison of choice is Natural American Spririts, it's from Mexico. My doctors said that if you're going to smoke, this is what you must smoke, cause it doesn't have the additives, the rat poison and all dem tings de put in the other ones, it still might kill yu, but...until yu stop, this is what yu must smoke.

Bad habits: "Sometimes my friends have to carry food to me to mek sure because mi don't eat and that's bad. When yu don't eat, yu gain weight, 'cause yu body storing up the fat. When I have things doing, I am busy, I drink coffee, I love coffee, I don't eat...just staying up, working on my Pro Tools."

Who she's feeling: Tesanne Chin, she bad liks yars. Her vocal range, her style, similar to mine, so mi muss love it. What I admire is her big voice, her voice just big, I love that, no disrespect to other singers, I love a big voice, that's what made me want to sing when I listen to them foreign singer de...there hasn't been a lot of that in Jamaica. I like what Cherine is doing...I had Marcia, I-Threes, JC. Lodge, but there was a space, nobody, so it is really cool to see Cherine, I have a myspace with all Jamaican female singers on the front page, I love that, I never had that coming up. It's good to see them, Jovi Rockwell, they are coming, wish them all the best, it rough coming up, especially when you don't conform what everybody ah gwaan wid, and what dem want. Trust me, it rough, my girl, yu need fi gear up yuself.
