Former heavyweight champion of the world Trevor Berbick killed

trevorberbick.jpgFormer heavyweight champion of the world Trevor Berbick was found with his skull bashed in this morning in Portland. The story even made it to the international press, and a report aired on FOX News this morning. Reports are sketchy at this time, but the police confirmed that the boxer had indeed been killed by unknown assailants in the community he resided.

"People are tight-lipped at this time, but we can confirm that he was found dead in Norwich District, Portland, we're not sure if it's stab wounds or gunshots. I know that he was deported from the United States, but we're not sure what were the grounds for his deportation," a CCN representative said.

At the age of 21, Berbick represented his native Jamaica in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Berbick, a former heavyweight champion of the world, had been forced to stop boxing after his last bout in May 2000 against Shane Sutcliffe when a CAT SCAN reevealed a blood clot in his brain and his license to box was revoked. He had retired to Florida to be with his wife and three children but had various arrests throughout his life and was even sentenced in Florida to 5 years in prison (he served only 15 months) for sexually assaulting the family babysitter in 1992.

In 1997, he violated his parole and was ordered deported from the United States, and . He was again ordered deported from the US on December 2, 2002. His final professional record is 50 wins (33 Knockouts), 11 losses, and 1 draw.

Sad story

Posted by: maureen at October 30, 2006 09:54 AM

It is sad to know that no one is safe any more. Sad to say at times if we know the person/s behind these killings we would be surprised. I am very sad to hear of his death and I do hope the law will take its full course when they find these killers who are going around and taking innocent people lives. This is one of our Portland hero and his life is gone just like that? I wish his family well in this time of bereveament and pray for God's strength in this time. All Portlanders are praying for you.
