Is the unprofessional attitude of dancehall artistes killing the business?
WHAT IS GREENSLEEVES GOING TO DO?

Are dancehall artistes shooting themselves in the foot with their unprofessional attitudes towards the business side of the music biz? Almost every week, you hear the horror stories of artistes not honouring contracts, whether they have been inked with individual managers, or with major record companies, and it has got to the point where you wonder when this sort of 'cowboy attitude' will cause this indigenous industry to implode.
So saying all that, YardFlex.com spoke to an industry insider about what were the broader implications of the recent developments where Fantan Mojah and now deejay Vybz Kartel have decided to opt out of their album deals with independent label Greensleeves Records.
"Based on what I have seen and heard, the way they are going about it is totally wrong," music producer Gussie Clarke. "This action will not get them out of it, but instead will create a negative impact as how they are perceived by other record labels. It could lead to a reluctance on the part of major players of have anything to do with those artistes in the future."
The ramifications may be negative for the up-and-comers in the business given the stigma being attached to dancehall artistes from poor socio-economic backgrounds.
"And with respect to upcoming artistes, it brings up an immediate question sign: do we really want to get involved with this artistes? If we do, the terms of investment will be different, it's a no-win for music and the artistes," Mr. Clarke said.
He added that "any contract with a major or independent company is binding. The ones who have been able to get out of contracts have done so because these companies are not interested in pursuing legal action because it is not worth their time, effort and resources."
"So they just wait it out, goodbye for everybody, but by taking this course, other labels will be careful in dealing with these artistes because it sends a message of how they do business."
Kartel's recent move to change his name to get out of his Greensleeves contract is somewhat similar to the action taken by the singer Prince in 1994 when during negotiations regarding the release of Prince's album 'The Gold Experience', a battle between Warner Bros. and Prince where they duked it out ver the financial and control of Prince's material.

you cannot compare kartel to prince.
if you have proven success, proven hits, proven album sales & many people see the worldwide potential in your talent, changing your name to get out of a contract 'could' work as a negotiation tactic with the label you are signed too. Without having a Hit, a record on the Radio, and/or serious momentum behind you, attempting a name change will leave you signed to a contract with a company that controls your destiny.

I believe an artist has a right or a say in any matter pertaining to their music career. I think there should be some compromise drawn between the two parties. I believe the artist comes first before anything because their it's their material.

its actually the mangers/labels that running the muzik to the ground. both fantom and vibez problems began w/ their management companies misrepresenting them and that forced the djs to to seperate themselves from this "damagement" Dancehall comes from the ghetto and when they try to "nice it up" too much it will suffer. Shabba, Yellow, Bounty, have always been "slack" and thats what the people dem love, dont try to change its core.

James W. Mhone, this is your direct quote:
"Dance hall music is good music lets not make it dirty in this way, please lets keep it clean men"
Have you been asleep for the last 5 years. Recently we have fallen in the abyss with "Dutty Whine". I saw with my own eyes nine year old children and younger doing this dance at a party til they had to shut it down when one of them got on their knees.
Keep what clean???????? What planet are you from? i'm not mad at you but damn dude POW!!!!! Wake the &^@#*&% up baby!!!!!!!

greensleeves is notorious for not releasing artists albums on time.i know for a fact.right now there's no major label(s) out there that understand dancehall music.most of them is looking for a gravy train to jump on.i've told many artists about this on numerous occasion, what we need is a label that understand dancehall music and this can only come from jamaica.a label for jamaicans by jamaicans.but b4 that can happen, artists need to come together.i like waht bounty is doing by jus signing only a distribution deal with v.p.records under his on record label.that will give artists more control of their music.blessed.

Sometimes as artistes we so badly want the international recognition that our management teams make poor decisions or do not understand clearly the legal ramifications of the contracts we sign. Only after being under the armpits of some of these recording companies do we start to smell that what initially seemed like a pretty rose garden is actually a stagnant pool with dead water lilies. If the legal loophole exists that can allow us to change names to get out from under their thumbs, then I don't agree with the term "unprofessional" in the caption of this article. The record companies try to screw the artiste legally so no problem if we use the law to do the same.

The uniqeness of our music is appreciated all over the world as we are a people who are not afraid to express ourselves and one of our major veheicles of cultural expression is our music how ever as time goes by and generations change peoples taste change with time and sorry to say the product which bob marley and peter tosh perfectd and called reggae is now corrupted by dancehall music which is a secture of the genre i think some dancehall ariste are selfish as they make a bad name for the industry thus dancehall should be separated from reggae

I THINK A FEW PEOPLE MISS THE POINT HERE....WHY SHOULD AN ARTIST,GET PAID FOR CERTAIN SHOWS AND JUST BECAUSE OF OTHER ILL REASONS THEY FAIL TO SHOW,WHEN T.O.K HAD THAT PROBLEM WITH A CERTAIN ARTIST DID ANYONE ATTACK T.O.K FOR WHAT WAS SAID IN REGUARDS TO THAT ARTIST?,WE SHOULDN'T STRAY FROM THE POINT HERE...I CAN'T SING OR DJ...BUT I CAN HANDLE THE TURNTABLES...THANKS TO ALL THE ARTIST AND PRODUCERS...WHO INVEST RIGHT ACROSS THE BOARD.THE FACT OF THE MATTER REMAINS TREAT THE BUSINESS LIKE BUSINESS.I UNDERSTAND EVERYONE WANTS TO BE IN CONTROL OF ALL TRANSACTION AND PAPER ACTION...EVERY BODY WANT PIMP SOMEBODY THESE DAYS,NO ARTIST WANTS TO BE PIMP,SO THERE MIGHT BE SOME FEAR OR FRUSTRATION ON THEIR PART,BUT STILL TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS....THERE IS TOO MUCH LINKS IN THE BIZ....AND WHEN THE LINK BUSS IT CAAN ALWAYS FIX(FRIEND AND COMPANY NUH WORK)

The record companys all try to use the artist. We as fans dont love the record companys we love the artist, and if the artist feel that they are bring rob them dem have the right to speak out. cause dem nah fool. so i dont care what happen to the record company long as the artist is pleased.
