Joseph 'Culture' Hill laid to rest - "I will only go if you put the gun down" (Sierra Leone)
By: Claude Mills
Photos By: Carlington Wilmot
The rows of empty pews spoke volumes about the scant regard that most Jamaicans appeared to convey towards an icon who was revered in the West African countries of Ghana and Nigeria, but treated with only an iota of that same accord and awe in his native country.
Still, a large number of friends, family and members of the entertainment fraternity turned out to bid 'Culture' farewell in a beautiful ceremony occasioned by several musical and spiritual highs on Saturday at the the Emmanuel Apostolic Church, 12 Slipe Road in Kingston. Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, Lloyd Evans (member of the Joseph 'Culture' Hill Planning Committee), Neville Willoughby of RJR, Natalie Corthesy, senior director of entertainment policy, family member, Erica Hill-Myers all gave glowing tributes to the fallen music icon. Afrine Hill-Walker delivered the eulogy.
Speaking with Yardflex.com, his son, Kenyatta, who will take up the mantle of being the lead singer of the Culture band, vowed to continue his father's legacy.
"He was a wonderful man, loving, supportive, all anyone could ask for in a father, he was the one who guided me through, and I will walk proudly in his footsteps," he said.
Kenyatta and the Culture band will begin a tour of three continents, North America, Europe and Africa beginning October 14th.
"In Sierra Leone, rebels wanted him, and he said 'I will only go if you put the gun down while I am here'. If you read his website, you will see it, he asked us to put down the gun, and guess what, we put the gun down. Did you know that, Jamaica? That's the man," Lloyd Evans said. "The man knew his God, there is only one God and Joseph knew him."
Prime Minister Miller called him a "towering representative of our homegrown idiom, reggae', and lauded his "gritty melodious voice, keen ear for harmony, earthy humour, stylish dress and electrifying performances".
"Joseph Hill, your train is bound for glory, rest well, my inspiration," Prime Minister Miller intoned passionately.
Rastafarians and Christians sat shoulder-to-shoulder in a ceremony tinged by reggae and beautiful traditional Christian music. Spontaneous applause broke out during the Bethel Mass Choir's rendition of 'Leaning on the Everlasting Arm'.

Notables in attendance included Bongo Herman, Louis 'Flabba' Holt, Audrey Reid, producer Joe Gibbs and his son, Rocky, and JFM President Dezzie Young. Promoter Cristoph Tewes, who was the promoter of the German club tour during which Joseph died, was also in attendance.
Hill was buried at the Dovecot Memorial Park , in St Catherine, his native parish.
In a career spanning over 30 years, Culture has toured extensively in Africa (where he has a huge fan-base), Israel, Japan, Britain and Northern Europe.
Interestingly, there was a service of thanksgiving in Ghana for Hill on the same day as the one in Jamaica .

Not many artistes showed up at the funeral itself, but they had already celebrated his life on the previous night, September 8th, with a memorable night of performances at the bursting-at-the-seams Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre. The lineup consisted of Luciano, Anthony B, Bob Andy, Big Youth, U Roy, Jimmy Riley, George Nooks, Tony Rebel, Dean Fraser, Tamlins, Leroy Sibbles, Carlene Davis, Taurus Riley, Josie Wales, Natty King, Lovindeer, Prodigal, Junior Kelly, Bunny Brown, Nadine Sutherland, Sly Dunbar, Peter Lloyd, Lloyd Parkes, Gullibanque, Limey, Boscom X, Mystic Revealers, Grace Thrillers, Pam Hall, Charlie Chaplin, Mighty Diamonds, Toots, Queen Ifrica, Bankie Banx, Etana, Katalyst Crew, Chuck Fender and more. MCs will be Tommy Cowan, Mutabaruka and Denise Miller.

Yes another example of lack of regard for what we have..
Our culture and the people who help us establish it are not regarded by the average Jamaican...that is a shame..
Jamaica as small as we are have a lot to offer to the world...in this time of 'global terrorism' from the top nations we are a place and a culture revered and should be proud of our music and our many great men and women...
Brother Bob Marley, sister Miss Lou and all the others that have gone before...
We thank you...
For us the few cultured minded Jamaicans let us not give up faith but fight resiliently to attain the equallness and oneness as well as the respect that should be given to these heroes and heroines...
Rest in peace Culture...sir Joseph Hill you will always be remembered...
At least by the people who really matter..

an artiste of such caliber and realness will stay prominent as an inspiration to many of us who live today and after. Many of the youths know his songs but dont know they are his--> while this does not speak well of our ability to give artistes their credit I think the man himself would love people to remember his message more than his name... Fame is nothing compared to glory and motivation to a people.
I cant say i will miss him becuz he is here with me evryday......TUNE STILL A RUN, MESSAGE STILL REACHIN I, CULTURE DI FADDA STILL TEACHIN I..

From what I read so far, he knew his god and as long as one has that spiritual connection with the Almighty we don't have to worry about how many were in attendance during his funeral ceremony. Joseph Hill legend will go on, his music will always play and he is gone to meet his maker and made peace with his god. May he rest in peace and receive his maker.

Oh for shame!
It is indeed sad that the majority of Jamaicans as well as persons in the music frat did not see it fit to attend. In some ways I guess it could be expected. With stardom...its today for me and tomorrow for u and by next week people will be asking who are "u and me" again ...no wonder a lot of stars suffer emtional anxiety and depression after a while...king never accepted in his own country huh?

We will miss you brother Joseph Hills. You soothe our fearful minds with your songs during the gruesome war in Sierra Leone, you encouraged us not to "Cry old Sufferer, things will be sweet" in your "Nuff crisis" album. You lively up the downtrodden man in the ghettos. Civilians, soldiers, and rebels forgot the pains of war and celebrate your music during your live concerts. we will miss you, but your songs and words will remain with us. May God's perpetual light shine on you and may you have the slice of mount you've always wanted.

It is a pain that will forever be stamped on our hearts to believe that our great teacher, leader, brother and friend "the great Culture" is no longer with us in this life. He was never an icon in "entertainment" as expressed by many. "culture" the great was a leader and a teacher, teaching black people as well as other races the road to true life and the way to be humble to reach God. He was a teacher teaching and freeing us through music. He was not entertaining people to have nice time and fun. He was a father and a brother. Iam a Muslim passing our condolences, farewll, and prayers with our hearts full of grieve, pain, and sorrow, on behalf of many of our brothers in the Republic of Sudan in east africa, and in Niger, and many brothers with me here in malaysia, who know and love culture for many years. Rest in peace our brother "the great culture". we will forever mourn you because we know there will be no replacement for you. May Allah reward you the best of reward in the Garden of Eden. Ameen

Surprised that Sekuru(Granddad) Hill, as we in Zimbabwe called him, didnt command much respect in Jamaica. But it figures, a prophet doesn't always command respect among his own people. But we loved his music. Personally, the album International Herb and One Stone will always be my favourites. To Sekuru Hill, I say fare thee well, hamba kahle, quawe lamaquawe(Go well, hero of heroes)

I salute Sekuru Hill. We in Zimbabwe loved the old style reggae because we understood it and we connected with what the good old reggae masters like Marley, Tosh and Sekuru were teaching. Today we are saddened by the slackness of the lyrics. Dancehall is just youth stuff I don't see where I fit in all the "Dutty Wine" business going around. Roots reggae collapsed geographical and metaphysical boundaries and united Africans on the continent and Afr-Caribbeans(Africans in exile) in spirit. Sekuru Hill preached about love, respect, historical justice, apartheid and all other thematic concerns to do with the survival of the black person on this planet and that we will miss. We feel the void Sekuru has left but we don't lose sight of his vision of Addis Abbaba- an Africa without borders). We will meet again Sekuru, you have just been promoted to higher glory.

The words of Brother Joseph "Culture" Hill will "still, rest in my heart". There are no words that can express how Jah children feel about your passing. I cannot ever forget the lyrics of "Stop this Fussing and Fighting", though written nearly thirty years ago, still rings true today all over the world. Jah children are, to this day still, "too long in (Babylon) slavery:.
Brother Hill spoke of "truth and rights" every time, which is why I respect the man so.
Always giving thanks and Praise to the Almighty, what more can one offer the Almighty but the giving of thanks.
Give thanks to the Almighty for the life and works of the great brother Joseph "Culture" Hill.
His passing caused a great "distubance" in the force called Rasta.
Jah children, "Natty never get weary" in this time of great tribulation.
Jah Live I-tinually,
More Time

I was so saddened by the early passing of joseph hill, although I am from the uk and never got to see culture perform live, there music was an inspiration to me and my collection of reggae music was headed by my culture cds. When joseph passed away the music industry lost an icon for his music will live on in all of us and future generations will know of him and his music, and sing his words, thank you joseph for all the joy you have given me over the years you will not be forgotten ,god bless.

Hola hola hola jah rastafari, Emporer haile selasie I, Jah Rastafari Selasie I the first. Divinity of Rastafari reing for ever. In that the I, Joseph 'culture' Hill did conquer death in this life, WORD, SOUND and POWER. AMEN, BLESSING, HONOUR, POWER, GLORY, WISDOM, THANKSGIVINGS AND MIGHT be unto JAH Rastafari hola emanuel I king Selasie I for ever.
I ras menelik had the blessing to receive the word of truth, light, and guidiance from the prophet Ras Hill, as a youth in Freetown, Sierra Leone. As early as seven years old.
The spiritual light has never fade since. the soothingness of the melody, sweetness of his voice, breeds only life, courage, strength, to know the true one, in the face of great adversity. Still jah reinght, let thine enemy be scattered.
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most I, Shall abide under the shadow of the almighty.
He Joseph culture Hill resideth along jah, and peace was attain in this life and in the living.
For their is no such thing as death, and rastafari must refrain from associating with such and concern themself with such.
With love and the blessings of JAH death was conquer, in the living, living in the spirit and not in the flesh. With his word of kindness, thoughtfullness, love, healing of the spiritually lame and mindful he erase the fear of life and replace it with teaching and preaching of hope, life, GOD, with divine inspiration and love.
so till such time when I AND I shall be there, and all 144 are present, I pray the almighty will be kind on me to have the priviledge to stand next to the most right diveness of him, prophet Joseph culture Hill.
With love Rastafari I

The naming of a quality reggae band as
" Culture " some years ago has proved to be a gentle message for the interested to revisit the costly lessons of Africa.
Joseph Hill's consistently courageous lyrics have spoken of the need to challenge injustice and often make reference to his experiences in the community. He has taught, in the manner of the Rastafarian elders, that one should live good in one's neighbourhood. Mr. Hill, thank you for telling me that: " there is a land far, far away, it's called Addis Ababa ". Respect to the Hill family.
wadadda, Black Feather.

I and I believe he was a great man born to stand and struggle for black peoples freedom and equal rights musically. I and I believe Africans will miss him and that his spirit will continue from where his soul left to fight and defend blacks dignity, identiy and freedom.May his soul join the rest of other follen heroes of jahmaica and keep the spirit of reggae burning more than before.

Jah Live I-tinually,
More Time

i write this with tears streaming down my cheeks. having loved his songs since in ghana where i come from, my search for the song NO NIGHT IN ZION on the net today didn't only lead me to it but also the news of the legendary JOSEPH CULTURE HILL'S death. i can't believe he died almost a year ago and i never heard/read about it until today july 3, 2007.i was looking forward to getting more of his songs when i visit ghana but little did i know that culture was gone. sad this icon wasn't accorded the recognition he deserved in his country but for myself and most ghanaians i know culture's lyrics would forever be our light in whatever we do.HILL I LOVE YOU. REST IN PERFECT PEACE!
