Maja - Jamaica's First Int'l Gospel Awards Show

majaAward.jpgIn June of this year, the very best from among Jamaica's crop of talented Gospel Artistes at home and overseas will be brought together for Jamaica's first international Gospel awards, the Maja Awards. The event will be held on June 10 and 11 in the Kingston and St Andrew area.

The first evening will be entitled "People's Choice Nomination Concert". This production will bring together a star-studded line-up of local and international Jamaican recording gospel artistes. The audience will be treated with a show of the highest calibre and will be asked to vote for the "People's Choice Artiste of the Year".
On Sunday evening, June 11, there will be the Maja Awards Red Carpet Gala Affair.

In 1985, Jamaican-born Fitzroy Gordon, a broadcaster living in Canada, created a gospel awards to highlight and reward those within the gospel music industry in the Toronto area.

According to Gordon, the Maja Awards, which means "major or excellence", has now grown to become Canada's national premiere gospel awards. Although the awards are scheduled to be launched in England and major cities in the USA, Gordon believes that bringing it home to Jamaica is indeed the icing on the cake. "I am so happy to be taking the Majas to the land of my birth. I always wanted to make a significant contribution to Jamaica and I thank God for giving me this wealth called the "Maja Awards" to share with my people," said Gordon.

Maja Jamaica will be awarded in three categories: (1) The Recording category - for gospel artistes with recordings to their credit, (2) Gospel Star - gospel's alternative to American Idol. This category caters to emerging or artistes without a recording to their credit, and (3) Service Category - for Jamaicans who have served humanity with distinction. This can be from the Church, the public or private sectors.
