When he was hauled before the court on Friday to answer the charges, McFarlane told the judge that he found the fish in the garbage.

"Guilty with explanation, Your Honour," said McFarlane when asked what was his plea.

"I never take any fish out of the place, Your Honour. I found them in the garbage, that is my explanation," said the man who is the dishwasher at the restaurant.

But Presiding Magistrate Lorian Montague seemed perplexed.

"Then is good, good fish them have in the garbage sir?" the judge asked.

McFarlane opted not to answer that question and instead asked for time to pay the fine that would be imposed on him for the crime of simple larceny.

"I would ask for two weeks," he said.

"That is reasonable. I will give you two weeks. That is $20,000 and this is only part of the sentence," the magistrate told the accused.

McFarlane had his bail extended and was ordered to return to court on July 12.
