There are now more details available on the timeline for implementation of the ban on single-use plastic bags and styrofoam boxes in the local retail trade.

Government Senator Matthew Samuda is anticipating that within the next three months there should be significant developments. The upcoming ban was announced in the House of Representatives on Tuesday by Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Daryl Vaz. He explained that the widely popular plastic bags will soon be banned and Jamaicans will need to get reusable bags when they go shopping. In addition, regulations will be put in place for garbage bags including allowable sizes and types.

Vaz gave no timeline, but Mr Samuda has given a rundown of the activities that are taking take place and their estimated time of completion. He states that there was lengthy consultation with several groups up to two weeks ago and based on these discussions, the timelines are clearer.
