babsy-grange-minister.jpgMinister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, prior to addressing her ministry's budget allocation during Parliament's Standing Committee on Tuesday expressed her appreciation for the support she received at the passing of her mother in mid-February.

"Thank you for your condolences and best wishes," Grange said.

After thanking fellow MPs and other well-wishers, Standing Committee Chairman Pearnel Charles apologised for not expressing condolences before she started.

"On behalf of the members of Parliament and the Parliamentary family, we express our condolences on the passing of your mother," Charles said.

Grange's mother Raphaelita Walker, 90, died peacefully at her home in Toronto, Canada, February 14.

Considered a stalwart in the Jamaican community in Toronto, Walker was an integral member of several organizations including the 55-year-old Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA), the largest and oldest community Jamaican organisation in Canada.

She was also an integral member in the PACE (Canada), Project for the Advancement of Childhood Education, which adopts basic schools in Jamaica; and the Jamaica Independence Church Service Committee, which plans the annual event to commemorate Jamaica's independence.
