NBC NEWS reported that "cheering, clapping and banging from people watching the Olympic Games may have been misinterpreted as a fight and gunshots".

The 9:30 pm panic ensued just as the Jamaican superstar won the 100-meter dash at the Rio Olympics for the third time, making history, the New York Post reported.

The NYPD received reports of shots fired at two different terminals, sending people in the airport running for their lives and causing a massive evacuation, according to the Post.
