Caribbean artistes Nicki Minaj and Rihanna treated viewers to one of a kind performances, while the dancehall influence was very present during Beyonce's and Rihanna's sets. Rihanna, who was presented with the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award, performed four times over the course of the night, her best set being the reggae inspired block party. During her performance, music from Sly & Robbie, Beenie Man and Mr. Vegas were sampled.

Additionally dance moves created by the late Mr. Wacky also took centre stage.

The night ultimately belonged to Beyonce, who stole the show with a 16-minute medley of songs taken from her latest album, Lemonade.

Meanwhile, on the winners list were Beyonce with Video of the Year, Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Breakthrough Long-Form Video. Best Hip Hop video went to Drake and Best Collaboration was Work From Home by Fifth Harmony, who also won Song of the Summer for Flex. Calvin Harris featuring Rihanna won for Best Male Video.
