I take this opportunity to congratulate Jamaican reggae group Morgan Heritage on the stellar achievement of winning one of music's most prestigious honours-the Grammy Awards. Winning your first Grammy for Best Reggae Album is an exceptional accomplishment for you as a music group, but it is also a moment of great national pride for all Jamaicans at home and abroad. We celebrate this great success with you.

For decades, our artistes and musicians have taken Jamaica to the world stage; carrying our culture to the farthest reaches of the globe. Reggae music is not only a longstanding flag bearer for the Jamaican culture, but it has also provided the stirring backdrop in the fight for social justice around the world. Moreover, every year many tourists visit to our Island, captivated by the magnetism of our music, the beauty of Jamaica and the great vibe of our people.

UNESCO's recent designation of Kingston as a Creative City of Music is due in no small part to the work of our artistes and musicians, who throughout generations, have honed their craft in urban centres and communities in rural Jamaica. There is no doubt that creativity is in the DNA of our people and part of the rich heritage of our great nation.

We will continue to work to make the cultural and creative industries a centrepiece of social and economic development.

The National Cultural and Creative Industries Commission, in the Office of the Prime Minister, has been working with participants in the sector. It has been guiding the process to facilitate the strategic development of the creative economy to help our people reap, more fully, the fruits of their creative genius.

So today, I pay tribute to Morgan Heritage, all the other talented Jamaican artistes who were nominated in this year's Grammy Awards, as well as our music pioneers who have laid a solid foundation for us to build this sector.
