Port of Spain mayor apologises

Port-of-Spain mayor Raymond Tim Kee has apologised for comments "attributed to him" at a news conference yesterday, insisting they were taken out of context. In the same breath, he has agreed that his comments could have been considered out of line.

Following the announcement of the Downtown Carnival results at his City Hall office yesterday, Mayor Tim Kee was asked for his comment on the discovery of the body of a female masquerader at the Queen's Park Savannah.

The statements suggested that the woman's death, later identified as Japanese pannist Asami Nagakiya, was in some way linked to a culture of lewdness.

The Mayor says his comments were completely misconstrued, and singled out a headline in a daily newspaper which read "POS Mayor criticises women". Tim Kee said it was a matter of "drawing fire even before the article was read."
