It said 14 others are feared dead in the village that bore the brunt of Erika's fury as it passed across the island.

Twenty-five persons are now confirmed dead, but the authorities say they expect the death toll to rise as more areas which are cut off by the storm become accessible.

The first of what is expected to be a number of sailing missions from Barbados landed on Monday morning in Dominica.

The Barbados Coast Guard vessel, the HMBS Trident, brought medical supplies, electrical equipment and personnel who will helping in to restore the country's electrical and telecommunications capacity.
