Health Minster Molwyn Joseph said the ban would come into effect on January 1 next year and would involve all plastic bags, except for those used for garbage collection and disposal.

"January 1, 2016 was established as a ban to allow for further consultation across the board and to give the business establishments the opportunity to prepare for the transition," Joseph said.

He said the Ministry of Health would further prohibit the use of plastic bags by mid 2016 and during the period, the authorities will be working with partners in the private sector to find alternatives. Joseph said that the government would be willing to waive duties and other taxes to assist the private sector as they seek alternatives to the use of plastic bags.
